Herceg Novi is recognizable by the abundance of mimosa trees and its numerous flights of stairs. It’s often called ‘The City of the sun’, thanks to the large number of sunny days all year round.

The centre of Herceg Novi is its Old Town (Stari Grad), decorated with buildings dating back to the epochs of Sahat – Kula (1667) and Kanli – Kula (1483). Fortress Spanjola (1538) and Fortress Forte Mare (1687) are only a part of the cultural heritage of this renowned town.

Rich with greenery, Herceg Novi hides numerous kinds of tropical flowers. Towards the end of January the town becomes scented with the subtle fragrance of yellow and green mimosas and there is a special festival dedicated to this flower, called Praznik Mimosa. During the summer months many festivals are organized to further enrich the tourist offer of this enchanted town.

The beginnings of the Herceg Novi tourism are connected to the XIX century. Back at that time the tavern of Sjora Roza and the café “Bella Vista” are mentioned. Still, the precursor of the modern hotel keeping on the Montenegrin coats is thought to be the Hungarian nobleman Antal Magyar from Budapest, who in the 1902 built a “Boarding house on the green beach” in Zelenika, which later became hotel “Plaza” (BEACH) – Zelenika.

As in all other town on the Coast, Herceg Novi also has a mild Mediterranean climate; with dry and warm summers and mild winters. In the summer months (July and August) the town has approximately 10, 7 sunny hours per day. The sea temperature in Herceg Novi during the summer is 22 – 26 Cº, and with approximately the same daily air temperature it allows the swimming season to last up to 5 months.

Read on for the 24 best things to do in Herceg Novi.

Best Things To Do in herceg Novi, Montenegro

1. herceg novi old town.

Herceg Novi Old Town

Old Town Herceg Novi is off-the-beaten-track compared to other old towns in Montenegro like Kotor and Budva. That’s why it’s less crowded and more authentic, which makes it a wonderful place to visit.

The old town’s cobbled streets are lined with boutiques, bakeries, bookstores, and charming stone houses with colorful doors. Locals walk the streets, browse the stores, and leisurely sip coffee in the open-air cafes.

One of the best things about the Old Town is the amazing views. Make a stop at Gradska Kafana to enjoy the views over the Bay of Kotor over a coffee and Pekara Panino 2 for delectable breads, pastries, and cakes.

2. Herceg Novi Clock Tower

Herceg Novi clocktower

Herceg Novi’s clock tower was built by the Ottoman Turks in 1667. The clock tower was both an entrance gate to Herceg Novi and a town clock. The bells were added in 1753 and were a gift from Tsarina Catherine II of Russia.

At the base of the clock tower stop by Salt Book Store for interesting books like The Austro-Hungarian Fortresses of Montenegro: A Hiker's Guide . Nikola, the owner, has also published several books about the Bay of Kotor.

3. Belavista Square

Belavista, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Belavista Square is full of life, with bright buildings and cafes all around. It's a great place to sit, have a coffee, and watch the world go by.

In the square, you'll also find the 19th-century Church of St. Michael. The Church of St. Archangel Michael was built during the Austro-Hungarian period and sits on the spot of an earlier church built by Herceg Stefan.

This church is notable for its Korčula stone construction and inside there is an iconostasis crafted from white Italian marble, adding to its historical and architectural significance.

If you visit the church, it is respectful to have your shoulders and knees covered

4. Kanli Kula

Kanli Kula, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Kanli Kula, towering over the old town of Herceg Novi at 279 feet above sea level, is a significant historical landmark in Herceg Novi and also offers magnificent views of the town.

Its name, meaning "bloody tower" in Turkish, reflects its history as a fortification and prison during Ottoman rule. There are many sad stories of torture and sacrifice as the Ottomans sought to convert the Christian people of Herceg Novi to Islam.

The exact date of its construction is unknown, but it was first mentioned in the 17th century and is believed to have been built by the Turks in 1539. The Venetians expanded and repaired it in 1687, enhancing its strategic importance.

Kanli Kula is also one of the largest amphitheaters in the Adriatic, and is a hub for cultural events, particularly during summer. Look out for August’s International Film Festival and the renowned Operosa Montenegro Opera Festival.

You can explore the tower for a small fee, which includes a video presentation in the visitors center. You can visit the dungeons and see etchings from former prisoners and there is also a well-preserved Venetian water cistern.

It’s well worth it for the impressive views from the top and the chance to learn about the history of Herceg Novi.

Entrance:  €3 per person (cash only)

5. Forte Mare

Forte Mare, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Forte Mare is one of the most significant fortifications in Herceg Novi and an important hub for outdoor events.

Originally built in the 14th century by the town's founder, Tvrtko I of Hercegovina, this fortress has undergone numerous transformations and reconstructions throughout its history.

Initially built as a citadel to protect Herceg Novi from sea attacks, it has been used by various rulers, including the Ottoman Empire, the Venetian Republic, and Austro-Hungary.

The fortress's current size, shape, and dimensions were largely developed during the Turkish reign. In the middle of the 16th century, it was known as “Jaka kula” (“Strong Tower”) or “Kula Apasbase,” but it received its present name, Forte Mare (“Sea Fortress”), in the 18th century during the Venetian reign.

Today you can explore the fortress's passageways, ladders, and stairs within the stone complex. Although a large part of the fortress fell into the sea during an earthquake in 1979, part of the defensive wall from its original construction is still preserved on the southeast side.

Forte Mare hosts various events, festivals, and outdoor film screenings, especially during the summer.

Entrance:  €1 per person

6. Herceg Novi Farmers Market

Herceg Novi farmers market

Just off the main square in Herceg Novi Old Town, you'll find Herceg Novi farmers market ( pjaca ).

This is the best place to find fresh produce. You'll find locally grown fruit and vegetables, fresh fish (this is where we buy fish if we haven’t caught enough), flowers, prosciutto, homemade cheeses, juices, brandy, and olive oil.

Most produce here is locally grown or made, often by the person selling it to you. A ' domači ' sign means something is locally grown.

I recommend trying figs, marinated olives, honey, olive oil, cheese in oil, pomegranate juice, tomatoes, and brandy .

Opening hours: Every day except Sunday 8am - 2pm.

7. Pet Danica Promenade

Pet Danica Promenade, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Pet Danica Walkway is a picturesque walkway stretching along Herceg Novi's coastline between Lazure Marina and Hotel  in Meljine and Igalo. This 7km promenade is perfect for leisurely walks and has several beautiful beaches.

Although quite busy during the day, in summer the promenade comes alive at night. People start to come out from 8 pm onwards to walk the promenade.

Grab a cone of gelato at Do-Do Cafe by the marina, or dinner at one of the many restaurants along the promenade. We love Konoba Feral and Konoba Škver, both by the marina.

At the Igalo end, you’ll find popular bars and clubs like La Bamba, Peoples, and Casa.

Local's Tip:

I don’t recommend staying in the beachfront apartments along the promenade unless you’re a really heavy sleeper.

This area is generally full of people all day and all night and in Igalo, the music from the clubs and outdoor bars will be thumping until at least 1am.

However, I do recommend the Savina end of the promenade ( Hotel Perla and Lazure Hotel and Marina a great options). It is quiet and there aren’t any bars.

8. Beaches in Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi Beach

Herceg Novi’s beaches are some of the best in the bay, with clear water and cozy beaches offering loungers, sun umbrellas, cafes, and changing facilities.

Herceg Novi’s beaches are mostly pebbly, except for the large, sandy beach in front of Tito’s Villa in Igalo.

Three beaches in Herceg Novi (Yachting Club 32, Rafaello, and Mimosa) have been awarded the Blue Flag certificate, which means they have high standards of service, safety, water quality, and environmental practices.

Here are some of my favorites:

  • Herceg Novi Beach: Next to the marina in the center of town, you'll find a pebble beach with kayak rentals and loungers.
  • Savina: two small beaches next to Hotel Perla . Small pebbles that are good for kids.
  • Baby Beach: just north of the marina below the Old Town, this beach has fine sand and small pebbles.
  • Igalo: The sand and shallow water of Igalo at the far north end by Tito's Villa is a favorite with locals. The sandy bottom and abundance of crabs and fish make this a great spot for kids of all ages.

9. Herceg Novi Kayaking

Kayaking around Mamula Island, near Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Herceg Novi is a great place to go kayaking. You can explore the coastline around Herceg Novi, head across the bay to the adorable village of Rose, or paddle to Mamula Island.

You can take a guided tour or hire kayaks and head out on your own.

10. Herceg Novi Museum Mirko Komnenović

The 18th-century building that houses Herceg Novi's museum was bequeathed to the town with the stipulation that it become a museum by resident Mirko Komnenović (1870 - 1941).

The stately building and gardens house archaeological, historical, ethnological, and religious collections.

Many exhibits show Herceg Novi's proud sea-faring past and the garden is made up of over 100 carefully chosen Mediterranean and subtropical plants.

The museum is small and you can cover it in an hour, but it’s worth visiting if you're interested in history.

Entrance:  €1.50 per person

11. Savina Monastery

Savina Monastery, Herceg Novi

Savina Monastery is a significant historical and religious site in Herceg Novi. This monastery, named after Archbishop Sava, a revered figure in the Serbian Orthodox Church, began with a small church built in the 13th century.

The monastery has three churches: the smaller Church of the Assumption, the grand Great Temple of the Assumption, and the Church of St. Sava.

The smaller Church of the Assumption, dating back to 1030, was renovated in 1831. It has beautiful frescoes by Lovro Dobricević, a renowned 15th-century Kotor painter, blending Byzantine and Gothic styles.

The Great Temple of the Assumption, constructed between 1777 and 1799 by Nikola Foretić, is a masterpiece of Dalmatian Baroque architecture. Its belfry, adorned with decorative elements, adds to its elegance.

The temple houses the revered icon of St. Mary of Sava, believed to have miraculous powers, as per a legend involving the protection of the city from a Venetian naval attack.

The Church of St. Sava, believed to be built by St. Sava in the 13th century and renovated in the 15th century, is located near the upper burial site.

Savina Monastery also houses significant relics, including the remains of Serbian Tsaritsa Elena and Apostles Thomas and George, along with St. Sava's crystal crucifix. Its library contains over 5,000 texts, including a 1375 Gospel manuscript and a 17th-century Russian alphabet book used by the famous Montenegrin poet, Petar II Njegoš.

>> Take a guided tour of Savina Monastery and Savina Winery

12. Savina Winery

Savina Winery, Herceg Novi

Savina Winery, nestled in the picturesque landscape above Savina Monastery, is a hidden gem in Herceg Novi.

This family-run winery, with its rich tradition and passion for winemaking, offers a chance to experience authentic Montenegrin wine and hospitality.

>> Take a guided tour of Herceg Novi, Savina Winery, Perast, and Our Lady of the Rocks

13. Rose Village

Rose village, Bay of Kotor, Montenegro

Rose, a quaint fishing village across the bay from Herceg Novi, is my favorite getaway. We love to jump in the boat and head over there first thing in the morning for a seaside coffee.

It’s so tranquil and idyllic!

The village's waterfront is lined with stone villas and small boats. It also has crystal-clear waters (just watch out for sea urchins) and excellent seafood restaurants (Adriatic is our favorite).

It's a perfect spot to spend a quiet day by the sea, swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the laid-back vibe in a traditional Montenegrin fishing village.

To get there, catch the taxi boat from Herceg Novi marina (called Škver). It travels back and forth between Herceg Novi and Rose 7 times per day and a return ticket costs €7.

>> Take a tour to Rose, the Blue Cave and Kotor

14. The Blue Cave

The Blue Cave is one of Montenegro's most popular natural attractions and one of the top things to see in Herceg Novi.

Located on the Luštica Peninsula, this sea cave is famous for its iridescent blue waters, created by the sunlight reflecting off the seabed. Inside the cave, the light creates a surreal, glowing blue environment, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

The best way to get to the Blue Cave from Herceg Novi is by taking a boat tour from Herceg Novi marina. These tours often include other attractions around the bay.

>> Take a Blue Cave boat tour from Herceg Novi

>> Take a full-day cruise to the Blue Cave and more from Herceg Novi

15. Žanjice Beach

Zanjice Beach, Montenegro

Žanjice Beach, nestled on the Luštica Peninsula near Herceg Novi, is a favorite beach destination for both locals and tourists in summer.

This picturesque beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and pebbly shore, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. It’s surrounded by rugged hills and lush greenery which make it all the more idyllic.

The beach is well-equipped with amenities you need to spend a few hours here, including sun loungers, beach bars, and restaurants serving fresh seafood.

To get to Žanjice Beach, take a boat tour from Herceg Novi marina for €20 per person.

>> Take a private boat tour from Herceg Novi

16. Mamula Island

Mamula Island

Mamula Island, at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, is one of three forts that protected the entrance to Kotor Bay: Fort Mamula, Fort Arza, and Fort Prevlaka (on the Croatian side).

Built in the 19th century by the Austo-Hungarians, the island was a military stronghold and a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.

Until recently, you could freely explore Mamula’s crumbling fortress buildings. However, it has been developed into one of Montenegro’s newest luxury hotels , Hotel Mamula.

Although you can’t explore the island anymore, except as a guest of the hotel, most boat tours cruise by the island and tell you about the history of it. There is also a small museum in the hotel dedicated to the former prisoners of the island that anyone can visit by calling in advance.

17. Adventure Park Vrbanj

Adventure Park Vrbanj ( Avanturistički Park Vrbanj ) is a hidden gem in Herceg Novi that only locals know about. This is one of the best things to do with kids in Herceg Novi.

A 40-minute drive from Herceg Novi in Nature Park Orjen, this adventure park is suitable for all ages 5 and up. The park has a variety of obstacle courses and zip lines that weave through the treetops. The courses get progressively more challenging and end with a zip line through the trees.

The Adventure Park has picnic tables and there’s a range of hiking trails in Nature Park Orjen. When you’ve finished at the adventure park, stop at Motel Konak Vrbanj’s restaurant for some hearty Balkan grill to refuel.

18. Spanish Fortress

Spanjola Fortress

The Spanish Fortress (Španjola) is another off-the-beaten-track destination that offers a glimpse into Montenegro's history.

Built in the 16th century, by the Spanish and Ottoman Turks, but was also used and renovated by the Venetian Republic and Austro-Hungarian Empire. It has been abandoned since the end of World War II.

Today, this impressive fortress offers a rare chance to explore some authentic ruins. The fortress is in the shape of a square with round towers at each corner.

Inside you’ll find the remains of various buildings which were the mosque/church, barracks, food and weapons stores. You can also walk around the fortress walls, from which you’ll get views over Herceg Novi and the Bay of Kotor.

19. Portonovi

Portonovi is a luxurious marina and resort village just outside of Herceg Novi in Kumbor. The village's beautiful architecture, landscaped garden, and lively atmosphere make Portonovi a popular destination year-round.

20. Church of Sveti Ilija

Church of Sveti Ilija Herceg Novi

The Church of Sveti Ilija, also known as the Church of St. John, in Žvinje near Herceg Novi, offers some of the best views around Herceg Novi.

Perched on a hill, this modest 17th-century church is a beautiful example of a traditional, modest Orthodox church.

There are 15th-century gravestones and a a monument to French soldiers who died  in this area in 1806.

From the church, you’ll get expansive views over the Bay of Kotor on one side and Croatia and the Adriatic Sea on the other.

View from Church of Sveti Ilija Herceg Novi

There is a point on the wall around the church lies on the border between Montenegro and Croatia. This is a great spot for a picture where you can have one foot in each country.

21. Local Cuisine

Calamari Konoba Feral

The Bay of Kotor's traditional cuisine is a delicious fusion of Mediterranean flavors and Montenegrin heritage. Although you’ll find pizza and pasta on every corner, trying the local cuisine will complete your stay in this special part of the world.

This region is renowned for its fresh seafood, with dishes like grilled fish and squid, often seasoned with local herbs and olive oil.

A must-try is the "Buzara," a savory seafood stew enriched with garlic, wine, and tomatoes.

Meat lovers will enjoy "Njeguški pršut," a locally cured ham, and "Ćevapi," grilled sausages.

Side dishes often include fresh vegetables, olives, and homemade cheeses.

Completing the meal are the delectable local wines like Vranac which perfectly complement the region's rich and diverse flavors.

  • Konoba Tri Lipe - Balkan grill specialties
  • Konoba Feral - traditional seafood and meat dishes. I recommend reserving a table here in the summer months because it’s always full here
  • Konoba Škver - the best fresh caught wild local seafood. They don’t serve any farmed or frozen seafood. We love their calamari and black risotto, and my German friends say their tuna steak is the best they’ve ever had!

22. Ivo Andrić House

Ivo Andrić House in Herceg Novi is a cultural gem dedicated to the celebrated Yugoslav novelist and Nobel Prize winner, Ivo Andrić.

This traditional house, where Andric spent significant time, has been transformed into a museum where you can explore rooms filled with personal items, books, and photographs that offer a glimpse into Andrić's life and work.

The house, with its quaint architecture and serene garden, provides a reflective space for literature enthusiasts.

23. Mt Orjen Nature Park

Mount Orjen Nature Park , in the hills above Herceg Novi, is a haven for nature lovers and hikers.

The Orjen mountain range boasts scenic trails that offer breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and rugged landscapes. The trails vary in difficulty, catering to both seasoned hikers and casual walkers.

Along these paths, you'll find mountain huts like Subra (Za Vratlom), where you can rest, meet other hikers, and get a hot meal (usually only on weekends).

The Subra trail, in particular, is a popular choice, leading you through diverse terrains to spectacular viewpoints.

The most popular way to get to the park is from the village of Vrbanj.

  • Herceg Novi

The town of Herceg Novi.

History of Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi was founded on a former small fishing village existing since Roman Empire times as a fortress in 1382 by Bosnian King Stjepan Tvrtko I and was called Sveti Stefan or Castelnuovo.

After the death of Tvrtko, Duke Sandalj Hranić of the Herzegovinian Kosačas acquired Castelnuovo. During his reign, Herceg Novi picked up trading salt. When Hranić died, his nephew, Herzog Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, inherited Castelnuovo. Under Stjepan, Castelnuovo expanded and thus became a city, renaming it to Herceg Novi. The Turks conquered Herceg Novi in 1482, and ruled for 200 years, until 1687. However, there was a short pause between 1538 and 1539 when it was overtaken by the Spaniards after the Siege of Castelnuovo.

Venice gained control of the city and organized it into one administrative unit called Albania Veneta, along with the Boka Kotorska (then called “Bocche di Cattaro”) and present-day coastal Montenegro . On 24 August 1798, Herceg Novi was annexed by Austria but was then ceded to Russia as per the Treaty of Pressburg on 26 December 1805. The Russians officially occupied Herceg Novi between 28 February 1806 and 12 August 1807. On 7 July 1807, Herceg Novi was ceded to France as per the Treaty of Tilsit. Official French rule over Herceg Novi began on 12 August 1807, when the Russians left the city. The city was part of Dalmatia until 14 October 1809, when it was annexed to the newly-created Illyrian Provinces. Herceg Novi, as well as the rest of the Boka Kotorska , was overtaken by Montenegrin forces in 1813. It was under control of a temporary government based in Dobrota between 11 September 1813 and 10 June 1814, which was supported by Montenegro . The appearance of Austro-Hungarian forces in 1814 caused the Prince-Bishop of Montenegro to turn over the territory to Austrian administration on June 11. After Herceg Novi was retaken, as well as the rest of the bay, it became part of the Dalmatian crownland. The bay was under Austro-Hungarian control until 1918. The Kingdom of Montenegro attempted to retake the Boka Kotorska during World War I, it was bombarded from Lovćen , but by 1916 Austria-Hungary defeated Montenegro . On 7 November 1918, the Serbian Army entered the bay and were greeted by the people as liberators. The bay later became a part of the self-proclaimed State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, although expressed for a direct union with Serbia rather. Within a month, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was formed, renamed to Yugoslavia in 1929.

The bay was a municipality of Dalmatia until it was, like all historic entities, abolished in 1922. It was incorporated into the Zeta Oblast, from 1929 Zeta Banate. Herceg Novi was annexed by the Italians during World War II in 1941. It became a part of the province of Cattaro. Herceg Novi was later retaken by Yugoslav Partisan forces on 10 September 1943. Herceg Novi was later officially annexed to Yugoslavia as part of the People’s Republic of Montenegro .

Tourism in Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a major Montenegrin tourist destination. It is well known spa and health center, with nearby Igalo being abundant in healing sea mud called “igaljsko blato” (Igalo mud) and mineral water springs called “igaljske slatine” (Igalo water springs). Most famous tourist atractions in Herceg Novi are castle Forte Mare built by Serbian and Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382, Clock tower built by Austrians in 19th century, Kanli Kula tower built by Turks, Serbian church Sveti Mihailo which is in the central Belavista Square. As the rest of Boka Kotorska bay, the city has no long sandy beaches. It has numerous small cobble beaches, or concrete platforms. Therefore, the city itself is not a major destination for sunbathing, but there are many attractive beaches reachable by boat. One-day boat trips are organised to Luštica peninsula , which lies opposite to the town. It has many popular excursion sites, such as Žanjic , Mirište or Rose , all having beautiful and very popular beaches. Herceg Novi is very popular among those in pursuit of nightlife. This resort, loved by artists for its unique atmosphere and peace during the winter, wakes up in the summer, as numerous bars and clubs become open. Herceg Novi accounted for one third of overnight stays in Montenegro before Yugoslav wars, but situation has changed since in favor of Budva , Kotor and other resorts in northern part of the coast. The biggest problem of tourism in Herceg Novi is constant shortage of tap water, which is imported from Croatia. Inability of city to pay for the water from Konavle results in frequent cut-offs of water and dry taps, especially during the peak of the summer season.

Climate of Herceg Novi

The area of the Boka Kotorska is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers and mild winters. Herceg Novi has a specific microclimate, which is a result of southern exposition, proximity to the sea, limestone substratum and mountainous hinterland which prevents the breakthrough of cold air masses. Herceg Novi has approximately 200 sunny days per anum. In July and August there are approximately 10.7 sunny hours per day. Average annual temperature is 16.2 C, similar to Mediterranean and Atlantic cities of Naples and Lisbon.

Culture of Herceg Novi

“JUK Herceg-Fest”

Center for cultural events, was established on February 24 , 1992 . Two years later the cultural center and “Orijen”, movie distribution and production company, joined and have played crucial role in enhancing the cultural life in the city. Among many annual festivities are the celebration of mimosa, local theatrical events, and film and music fest.

The Herceg Novi City Archive

In 1956 Archive returned to Herceg Novi after being temporarily relocated to Zadar , Croatia. The Archive was relocated to Zadar by Italians during the Second World War. The original Archive building, built in 1885, suffered severe damage by the earthquake in 1979. Shortly after the building was renovated. Today, the Archive is 700 m² in size. The Archive features modern equipment and library open to the public. The oldest document in the Archive originated in 1685. The library contains approximately 30,000 volumes and 1,000 periodicals.

Historical Museum

The museum was established in 1949 and officially opened in 1953. The museum building, a gift to the city from the former mayor, Mirko Komnenovic (1870-1941), and his wife Olga, is at least 150 years old. City library The library contains at least 30,000 volumes. Among the contributors to this collection are Dušan Petkovic (5,000 books), Veljka Radojevic (1,500), Doklestic, Daljev, Lucic, Subotic and others.

  • Accommodation

After the official recognition of Montenegro in the Berlin treaty in 1878, there arose shortly after the plan for the development of the tourist economy in Montenegro. These plans focused on three areas: Cetinje with its environment, Kotor and Herceg Novi. Cetinje for the fact that it was then the former capital of Montenegro, with many diplomatic relations. Kotor for its rich cultural history with its abundance of medieval architecture. And for Herceg Novi the choice was made by the lush Mediterranean green, location and the presence of the nearby climatic spa of Igalo with its seaside resort. This was also a reason for the former president of Yugoslavia Tito to have his own spa summer villa built in Igalo in his time, which is still to be visited today. This ensures that in Herceg Novi more larger, long-established hotels can be found in other places in the bay. But the tourist growth of the last decades, Herceg Novi certainly has not passed. Herceg Novi in this development in the area of new accommodations is a bit between Kotor and Tivat, because it has both an old city core and Kotor, but also a more cultivable hinterland as in Tivat. The increase is now evenly divided into newly built large hotel complexes, villas, apartments, holiday houses and guest houses. But also existing monumental buildings in the old city have been renovated and transformed into beautiful new forms of accommodation as boutique hotels. Because of the southern exposure, location by the sea and, at the foot of a mountain location, Herceg Novi is blessed with its own microclimate in relation to the other places in bay, but also Montenegro in general. It has on average more than 200 sunny days per year and 10.7 sunny hours per day in July and August. The average annual temperature of the air is 16.2 ° C, the same as the Mediterranean cities of Naples and Lisbon. The temperature does not fluctuate very much; it has a daily variation of no more than 4 ° C. In short, it is one of the warmer and dry places in Montenegro throughout the year. As a result, more accommodations also have their own swimming pool than in the other parts of the bay, and they have a more tropical atmosphere due to the presence of vegetation as palms, colorful flowers and other more southern plant species. A good alternative are the accommodations in the adjacent places of Herceg Novi, and especially in Igalo. What about the beach that is said to have a sea mud, has a number of spas. Igalo is right next to Herceg Novi, and is easily reached by the Setaliste 5 Danica sea promenade. On the other side of Herceg Novi there is also the adjacent town of Meljine which also has good accommodations.

The Montenegrins’, Serbs’ and Croats’ languages are all mutually intelligible and derived from Serbo-Croat. The dialect and the vocabulary of the local people are heavily influenced by Italian. Locals usually speak and understand Italian, Russian and English.

Bus is the only form of public transport in/out of Herceg Novi, and the bus station located in the centre of town is busy the day long with buses heading mostly down the Adriatic coast. There is a regular bus service to Herceg Novi and further to other Montenegrin cities from main bus station in Dubrovnik, which runs several times a day. It costs about 9 Euro and takes about one hour. There are also quite regular buses to Kotor, Budva , Bar and Podgorica . If Herceg Novi is your main destination, a pleasant alternative to bus travel is hiring a Croat cab from Dubrovnik airport (Cilipi) for about €50; this trip takes about 40 minutes, including border crossings. There is no rail or ferry access into the town.

The old town is located at seaside going uphill. The best way to get around in the old town and surroundings is by foot. The best way to get around is to use Setaliste Pet Danica road. Setaliste Pet Danica is the pedestrianised seafront promenade that runs between the towns of Herceg Novi and Igalo . According to the guidebooks it is about 6 kilometer in length. However, the central part of the promenade, between the harbour at Herceg Novi and the beach at Igalo , is perhaps 3 to 4km in length. You are able to walk this part of the promenade in 30-40 minutes. The stretch of promenade between the harbor at Herceg Novi and Igalo is lined with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. The stretch of promenade to the east of the harbor is less densely developed but still contains a good selection of restaurants (many with outdoor seating areas overlooking the sea) and accommodation. There are a few beaches that can be accessed from the promenade. There are a few small pebbly beaches and a few areas that are marked as “beaches” but are in fact concrete sunbathing areas where you can access the sea. At regular intervals along the length of Setaliste Pet Danica you will find steep flights of steps that lead up into the main areas of Herceg Novi and Topla. Setaliste Pet Danica makes for a pleasant seaside stroll between Herceg Novi and Igalo and also offers a good selection of restaurants and bathing areas.

  • Old town — The Herceg Novi old town is amazing. It is on a fairly steep hill that leads all the way down to the sea. Wandering through the small stairways to the various plazas and fortresses is a many hour adventure. There are both Orthodox and Catholic churches that are well worth visiting. Free.
  • Kanli Kula — (Old Town). The Kanli Kula fortress dominating the old town doubles as an open-air theatre and is worth visiting mainly for the splendid views of the town and the Boka Kotorska bay.
  • Spanjalo — The Spanjola fortress located higher up the mountain (170 meters above see level) dates back to 16th century. Take a small street going upwards across from the Kanli Kula fortress. Entrance is free and you can freely climb the walls.
  • Savina Monastery — The Savina monastery, approximately 2 km east from the city center has three beautiful Orthodox churches and splendid views of the bay.
  • Swimming — The city has some great pebble and many concrete beaches, although most of them are quite crowded during high season. There is a path that leads along the beach part of the city for about 3 miles. Follow it until you find a place that is suitable for you. Many small privately owned beaches have loungers, small boats, and other gear for hire.
  • Mud therapy — At the western end of the promenade is a small spa town of Igalo, renowned across Europe for healing properties of its muddy, mildly radioactive sand. A health and hospital centre complex offers mud therapy combined with other treatments, but you can do it yourself by following the locals and wading through the sand. Apply the muddy sand all over your body, or on affected parts, and combine with gentle exercise and sunbathing for best effects. This is believed to be beneficial for rheumatic complaints, skin disorders, and gynecological problems.
  • Hiking — Going from the bus station up towards the hills you can find some wonderful ancient stone paths that lead up to some very rural communities. The paths are not marked and not very visible but if you wander along any road for a mile or so and keep an eye on the vegetation you should find one. Either way take a 3 or 4 mile walk up into the hills (whether you find the paths or not).
  • Mountaineering — Get in touch with Herceg Novi based mountaineering society “Subra” if you are serious about mountain sports in some of the most beautiful and unspoiled mountains in Europe: Check out their website. This website also provides basic maps of some hiking routes in vicinity of Herceg Novi, and information about local mountain huts.

Tours and activities

Italian-made clothes in Old Town and Igalo boutiques are reasonably priced up-to-minute fashions. Not great for local arts and crafts, which are available in Kotor and Budva. Go to local market just off the main square in the Old Town on Saturday morning to buy fresh fruit (sweet and cheap), olive oil, sheep and goats cheese, dried figs, locally made wine; note that this market sells seasonal and locally produced goods, so what you find depends on the time of your visit.

Go to small eateries around the promenade for fresh local food, grilled seafood and meat dishes, and international cuisine. Count approximately 10-12 euro for the main dish in a typical restaurant (grilled high-quality fish is more expensive). Almost all cafes serve pizza which is usually well-made. Follow the locals; Montenegrin’s are usually more picky than foreign tourists when it comes to eating out.

The Petica in the centre of the Old Town is a great place to sit, drink an espresso, or have some fairly priced pasta/pizza. 4-7E. The service is very friendly and the food is delicious.

The Tre Lipe restaurant is conveniently located next to the Sea Fort (Forte Mare), 20 meters from the beach. You eat in an open-air terrace under three old lindens, and the service is quick and friendly.

Herceg Novi is hot in summer, and it usually stays warm late into the evenings, so cold drinks are best sellers. Iced coffee is served in tall glasses with dolops of ice cream and “slag” (fatty whipped cream) and qualifies as a

full meal. Local beer made in Niksic is good; also try “spritzer” which is a refreshing mix of chilled white wine and carbonated mineral water.

You should also try out famous Montenegrin wines, “Vranac”, “Pro Corde”, “Krstac”, “Cabernet”, “Chardonnay” and “Nikšićko” beer. Montenegrin brandy, called “rakija” is good choice to “warm up” before going out in the evening, especially grape brandy “Montenegrin loza”, “Prvijenac” or “Kruna”.

Montenegro is generally a safe country, and this region is no exception to that. Still, be aware of beggars and pickpockets especially in the old town.

Half-day or full-day boat excursions along the Boka Kotorska or to a specific destination ( Kotor , Perast , Ostrog monastery ) leave from different points on the beach. These sights and places below can all be reached in an hour by car transportation.

  • Budva — the Montenegrin touristic metropolis on the Adriatic Sea is located some 20km south of the Boka Kotorska .
  • Cetinje — the historical capital of Montenegro is located just under Mt Lovćen , the mountain overlooking the Boka Kotorska .
  • Dubrovnik — the hub of Croatian tourism can be reached from Herceg Novi in less than 40 minutes north of the Boka Kotorska .
  • Lovćen national park — Mount Lovćen rises from the borders of the Adriatic basin closing the long ang twisting bays of Boka Kotorska and making the hinterland to the coastal town of Kotor . The mountain has two imposing peaks, Štirovnik (1,749 meters) and Jezerski vrh (1,657 meters). The mountain slopes are rocky, with numerous fissures, pits and deep depressions giving its scenery a specific look. Standing on the border between two completely different natural wholes, the sea and the mainland, Lovćen is under the influence of both climates.
  • Risan — visit the site of Roman ruins and some fairly well-preserved mosaic floors that had been in a Roman house during 2nd century A.D.
  • Perast — a well preserved village, built entirely in barroque style, a UNESCO World Natural and Historical Heritage Site. From Perast there is a boat ride to the man-made islet of Gospa od Škrpjela . Upon returning home safely, seamen dropped rocks and old boats filled with rocks in this place and gradually created the islet as the foundation for the church.
  • Njegos Mausoleum — The mausoleum of Petar Petrovic Njegos built of limestone and granite can be found on top of Mount Lovćen . It was Njegos’s last wish, the greatest ruler of the Montenegrins who was a bishop and a poet at the same time to be buried there.
  • Prcanj — small family-friendly place with great view of the Boka Kotorska .
  • Tivat — a small town, quickly emerging into a major touristic, business and transport centre. Located in the vicinity of the Tivat International Airport, in summer 2014 it became home of a luxury yacht marina called Porto Montenegro .
  • Mamula — Guarding the entrance to the bay, is this prison island built by Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula in mid 19th century. During the World War II, the fort was used as a prison by the Italians.
  • The island of Gospa od Skrpjela —  The Island Gospa od Skrpjela is one of two gorgeous islands in the Boka Kotorska , which are situated in the bay across from Perast . The other island, which also should be visited, is the island Sveti Djordje .
  • Plava Spilja — A blue grotto in the bay. It is 5.7 nautical miles away from Herceg Novi. During the summer season, you can take private boats from Herceg Novi to Plava Spilja.
  • Mount Orjen — Mount Orjen at 1,894 meters is the highest mountain on the Adriatic coastline and dominates the entrance to the Boka Kotorska and it’s surrounding.

Best Things to Do in Herceg Novi, Montenegro (in the City & Nearby)

1.) start with a walk in old town (heart of herceg novi).

Among all things to do in Herceg Novi, I want to start this list with a walk through the city’s Old Town. Why? Simply because it is a true treasure trove of amazing places, located right below the city harbor. And in comparison to all other old towns , including the one in Kotor and Budva, Old Town in Herceg Novi is probably the quietest and most cozy one.

To reach it from the sea, you need to climb one of the many staircases. Another option is to rent a scooter or car to navigate through its streets, then park on Stijepa Sarenca Street or a bit farther and walk from there.

Old Town Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi Old Town is in the area with the main architectural monuments of the city. There you can see how ordinary Montenegrins live – what’s their way of life and traditions.

The streets resemble intricate mazes, and at almost every step, something curious awaits be it a museum, an ancient church, or a gallery. There are many restaurants and cafes here serving delicious dishes of the national cuisine. In souvenir shops, you can buy memorable gifts and souvenirs to bring back home.

If coming to Herceg Novi early in the morning from Dubrovnik or another part of Montenegro, stop for breakfast at Peters Pie & Coffee by the walls of Old Town or Pekara Panino for baked goodies before going to explore the city.

2.) Take a Boat Trip to Mamula Island (One of the Most Famous Herceg Novi Attractions)

Mamula Island is among my top hidden gems in Montenegro with an intriguing history and picturesque allure. It holds a unique charm that is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who venture there. And on the way to the island, there is a chance to enjoy a breezy 1 hour 15 min boat trip while seeing Herceg Novi from the water.

Stepping foot onto Mamula Island is like stepping back in time. The island is home to an imposing fortress (part of which was turned into a hotel unfortunately), known as Mamula Fortress, which stands as a testament to its storied past.

Built in the 19th century, the fortress served as a strategic military outpost and later gained notoriety during World War II. But in recent years, together with the island, it was sold to one of the local companies where new owners of Mamula reconstructed the island preserving the architectural authenticity and adding a spa hotel and museum space .

Mamula Island near Herceg Novi

So those who visit, have a chance to immerse themselves in history while enjoying modern comforts.

Visiting Mamula Island from Herceg Novi is an adventure that combines history, natural beauty, and a touch of mystique. And if you choose a boat trip that also includes stops in other places (like Blue Cave or other islands), you’ll have an opportunity to escape the ordinary and embark on a journey that unveils the secrets of the past while embracing the beauty of the present.

3.) Or Sail to the Blue Cave (One of the Most Beautiful Grottoes in Montenegro)

In close proximity to the shores of Herceg Novi lies the Blue Cave (one of the most beautiful things to see in this area). The uniqueness of this natural wonder lies in its extraordinary natural illumination, which gave the small grotto its name. Sunrays reflecting off the water paint the cave walls with a shimmering blue hue.

The area of a grotto spans approximately 300 square meters and interplay of sunlight creates shimmering reflections that paint the walls and water in shades of azure blue.

exploring the coast near Herceg Novi

Visitors arrive here by boat, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. Some boat trips include a quick visit just to admire the beauty from the boat while others provide an opportunity to swim. It is also a popular place for divers who flock here to submerge at a depth of 40-50 meters.

The water in the cave is incredibly salty which means that even inexperienced swimmers will feel at ease here. The air is always refreshingly cool, while the water remains pleasantly warm.

4.) Explore Forte Mare (Historical Fortress With Views)

On a sheer cliff by Herceg Novi Old Town near the sea, there is an ancient Maritime Fortress built in the 14th century. During all the centuries until our days, it has served various purposes, including defense against invasions and as a strategic military point with the embrasures, battlements on the walls, and towers that have been well-preserved to this day.

Forte Mare is an interesting landmark in Herceg Novi for those who want to explore the region’s past and take in the views of the Adriatic Sea, Bay of Kotor , and Herceg Novi. Visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas and capture stunning photographs from its vantage point.

Additionally to that, depending on the time of the year, Forte Mare often hosts cultural events , exhibitions , and concerts , adding a vibrant atmosphere to the historical site. These events provide opportunities to experience the fortress in a different context and enjoy the cultural offerings of Herceg Novi.

Herceg Nove from above

I recommend you make a stop at the information center to inquire about the events. If you are visiting in summer , chance are very high that something interesting will be taking place in the fort.

5.) Go Kayaking or Paddle Boarding Along the Herceg Novi Coast

Herceg Novi as one of the many cities in Montenegro offers many opportunities for water activities, kayaking and paddle boarding are just some of them.

There are several places where you can rent kayaks and paddle boards like for example near the harbor in this shop or in this holiday apartment not far from the waterfront.

Another popular spot for kayaking and paddle boarding is a long beach in Igalo which is located near the city center. From there, you can explore the calm waters of the bay and head to Rose or Mirista . You can also venture further into the bay and explore hidden coves and beaches of the peninsula.

6.) Walk to Savina Monastery (Must-See Ancient Place in Herceg Novi!)

Savina Monastery is a renowned religious and cultural site nestled amidst so much lush greenery that it feels like you enter a botanic garden or some type of nature park. The complex consists of three churches : the Small Assumption Church, the Big Assumption Church, and the Church of Saint Sava, and has a monastic building with two cemeteries on its territory.

One of the main attractions of Savina Monastery is its historical significance and the miraculous Savina Icon of the Mother of God , which is considered the monastery’s most sacred relic. The monastery itself dates back several centuries, with the Small Church bearing an inscription on its wall that reads “1030,” indicating its venerable age.

Inside the churches, you’ll find exquisite artwork, including paintings and frescoes in Gothic and Byzantine styles. These intricate decorations showcase the artistic and cultural heritage of the area and offer a visual feast of religious artistry.

things to do in Herceg Novi on any season

Aside from its architectural and artistic splendor, this unique Herceg Novi sightseeing spot offers a tranquil and serene atmosphere, making it an ideal place for contemplation, meditation, and peaceful reflection.

There is an observation platform there as well which provides breathtaking views of the Adriatic coast. Once there, you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the sparkling sea and the surrounding natural beauty.

7.) Go for Wine Tasting (in Savina Monastery or Local Winery)

If you love wine tourism, then do not miss a chance to taste wine in one of the local wineries of Herceg Novi.

Wineries in this region offer wine tasting and the opportunity to purchase local wine varieties that are different from wines in other parts of the country. And some of them also organize tours of their vineyards and the wine production process.

Among the best wineries to visit in Herceg Novi on your own are Vinarija Delic and Savina wineries on the territory of the Savina Monastery (mentioned above) where vineyards are situated on the hills overlooking the Bay.

But if short on time and looking for some guidance, hire a guide and go on a private tour where you’ll also have a chance to visit the monastery with a guide, walk around Herceg Novi while listening to interesting stories, and taste local wines with corresponding food in the end.

8.) Explore Kanli Kula (Bloody Tower), the Creepiest Place in Montenegro

Going to Kanli Kula is one of those things to do in Herceg Novi that is not for everyone as the place is creepy and has a difficult history. However, many other will enjoy a stop here and appreciate the views.

The fortress, known to people as the “Bloody Tower,” earned its name due to the innocent executions of hundreds and thousands of people within its walls. Since Turks ruthlessly punished anyone who opposed the Ottoman Empire in the region.

Today, only the upper part of the fortification is open to tourists, with entry into the casemates strictly prohibited. However, even a glimpse of this structure is enough to experience the extraordinary atmosphere that prevails there.

The construction stands majestically above the sea and the city, offering incredible views from the observation deck. And within the inner courtyard, you’ll find the most unique amphitheater along the entire coast.

Kanli Kula is open from 10 am to 8 pm and can be visited together with Herceg Novi Old Town.

9.) Stroll On Nikola Djurkovic Square

Near the Old Town in Herceg Novi, you’ll find Nikola Djurković Square, named after the famous Serbian musician.

It is here that one of the most renowned and beloved festivals, the Mimosa Festival, takes place every winter in Montenegro . It is also home to one of the most recognizable hallmarks of Herceg Novi city and that is Clock Tower .

exploring Herceg Novi old town on foot

The square is a venue for various city events, theatrical performances, and music concerts. It is full of numerous shops, several cafes and restaurants, and cozy pizzerias, offering visitors a vibrant and lively atmosphere to enjoy.

Not far from this square, there is a very good coffee shop Fabrika Coffee with a variety of good coffee drinks and desserts. On the opposite side, there is a Bistro Lounge ‘Belavista’ with delicious seafood dishes and some traditional local eats.

10.) Pop Into a St. Michael Church – True Gem of Herceg Novi

This small Orthodox church in the city center is one of the most popular landmarks of Herceg Novi that instantly attracts attention with its unusual look.

The building is constructed from carved stone blocks and reflects completely different styles and directions of architecture. Inside, the main pride of the church is a unique altar with an iconostasis made of beautiful Italian marble. The church also houses numerous ancient books.

All walking tours around Herceg Novi start for the most part near this church. If you are exploring the city on your own, devote a few minutes to checking it out inside. The church is really big and beautiful.

11.) Don’t Miss the Regional Museum of Herceg Novi

Local Museum Mirko Komnenović is a fun thing to do in Herceg Novi if you’d love to get acquainted with the history and beginning of this city.

The museum is located in an ancient mansion and has four exhibitions in the halls. Its historical exhibition consists of photographs and documents that tell the story of the city from its founding in one interesting way. It also showcases sculptures and a small collection of weapons of the area.

The archaeological exhibition offers guests artifacts from the medieval period. Additionally, there is a separate display of items that were found on the sunken shipwrecks (one of which you can still visit in the small village of Rose situated on the opposite side of Herceg Novi across the bay).

Mirko Komnenovic houses many interesting exhibits, but all the information is provided only in Serbian, so have your translator ready.

Opening hours : 8 AM-5 PM except Sundays when it’s closed.

12.) Check Out Herceg Novi Beachs

Even though the best beaches in Montenegro are located south of Budva, Herceg Novi region offers some nice beaches too. Some of them are paid, others are free. Some are municipal and others belong to private hotels that outside guests can visit too for the payment.

Most beaches are predominantly pebbly with either large or small pebbles and some have concrete surfaces. And only a few areas have small beaches with soft sand.

Herceg Novi city beach

Many beaches in Herceg Novi provide amenities such as sun loungers, deck chairs, umbrellas (for an additional fee), changing cabins, showers, and toilets. Medical and lifeguard stations are open, as well as equipment rental facilities for water activities. And all beaches are clean.

The areas of Igalo , Zelenika , and Savina boast beautiful sandy beaches in Herceg Novi with some water activities. In the city center, you’ll find the pebble beach Žalo (near the walls of the Forte Mare), but in summer it is too crowded.

Some of the nicest beaches are the pebble-sand beaches of Savina beach (near the Savina Monastery), sandy Perla Beach that belongs to Hotel Perla , and those that are part of beach clubs like Plaza Yachtin Club 32 and Bay Beach Club .

Three beaches in Herceg Novi, Yachting Club 32 (sand-pebble), Rafaello (sand), and Mimosa (sand, right next to Rafaello), have been awarded the Blue Flag certification for their high standards of water quality, service, safety, and environmental practices.

13.) Visit the Spasskaya Church

The Spasskaya Church, also known as the Church of the Holy Salvation, is a captivating attraction that forms part of a grand complex in Herceg Novi. Its construction dates back to the early 18th century, and it underwent significant renovation and reconstruction in the mid-19th century. This historical and architectural gem showcases a blend of styles, combining elements of Byzantine and Baroque influences.

One of the main highlights of this Church is its beautiful iconostasis , crafted by skilled Greek artisans and is a masterpiece of religious art. It features a collection of meticulously painted icons that depict various saints, biblical scenes, and religious motifs . The intricate details and vibrant colors of the icons make them a sight to behold and a testament to the artistic heritage of the region.

Spasskaya church and famous Turkish fountain

Aside from its religious significance, the church also houses a collection of antique books and silverware that were in use in the region in the past. Exploring these historical treasures adds depth and context to the visit, making it a rewarding experience for history lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.

And on top of everything, the location of the Spasskaya Church is another reason why it is worth a visit. Situated within the larger complex, it provides a picturesque setting with beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea and the charming streets of the Old Town.

So if you are looking for a place in Herceg Novi that has beautiful views, Spasskaya Church can offer just that.

14.) Have a Long Walk on Herceg Novi Promenade

The waterfront of Herceg Novi is a must-visit destination for several reasons. Firstly, its location and beauty make it an ideal place to relax and unwind. The stunning coastal views, with the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, create a soothing and captivating ambiance.

Moreover, the waterfront offers a wide range of attractions and activities for visitors. You can enjoy leisurely walks along the promenade, taking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze (especially at sunset).

view on Meljine

Since the waterfront stretches for 7 kilometers, it becomes an ideal route for pleasant Montenegro coastal walks. The 7-kilometer stretch is lined with beautiful beaches, where you can soak up the sun, stop at one of the beaches to swim in the sea or indulge in various water sports.

This promenade is also a bustling hub of activity, with numerous hotels, shops, and restaurants catering to every taste and preference. You can go to one of the hotels’ private beaches or restaurants, explore local boutiques, or stop in one of the coastal bars for a meal (or drink) with a view.

One of my favorite things to do on the Herceg Novi promenade is to rent a bicycle or rollerblades and go on a leisurely ride along the coast, taking in the scenic vistas and enjoying the invigorating coastal air.

You can rent a bike or scooter in this shop here in close proximity to the promenade.

15.) Do Not Miss PortoNovi – Exclusive Holiday Village

Portonovi is located outside Herceg Novi city but in Herceg Novi municipality in the village of Kumbor which is easy to visit by car or public transportation on a day trip, for a few days, or just for a couple of hours.

In the days of Yugoslavia, the area where Portonovi today is built was a Navy base. But in recent years, it was turned into a luxury waterfront mini-town and residential development with everything that you can think of.

Portoonovi

There is a luxurious 5-star hotel One&Only (one of its type in Europe), the Chenot Espace wellness center (on the premises of the same resort) operating according to the legendary Henri Chenot system, a few world-class Mediterranean restaurants, a first-class marina that receives superyachts, many boutiques, galleries, and clubs. Portonovi has it all.

But besides the very expensive opulent accommodation, there are other residences with budget-friendly apartments and villas. People who love secluded stays should look into staying here while still being close to Herceg Novi and Kotor Bay.

While being pompous, the whole resort area is not noisy and not designed for mass tourism. It is quiet and family-oriented. Come here to walk along the beautiful waterfront, dine in one of the cafes or restaurants, have a drink in some of the coolest bars, or spend a day in the Tapasake beach club , where the world’s best DJs perform.

By the way, beaches here (entrance for the payment) are sandy, with a gentle entrance to the sea. A rarity for Montenegro and the entire Adriatic coast!

16.) Spend Time by the Herceg Novi Harbor

In the heart of the city, below the old town by the Herceg Novi beach and promenade, you’ll find a small city port with a lighthouse, known as Škver. This vibrant district is home to various attractions, including an open-air swimming pool, which serves as a venue for competitions and events, as well as a selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

An interesting feature of Škver is its beautiful former train station building, which now houses cafes , a bar , and an art gallery , serving as a nostalgic reminder of its railway past.

This area is where boats depart to coves and around the Bay of Kotor which is very beautiful in the evening and from the water.

Herceg Novi harbor

17.) Climb the Spanish Fortress in the North of Herceg Novi

One of the most abandoned places in Herceg Novi that also has panoramic views is the Spanish Fortress which you’ll find as Tvrdjava Spanjola on a map.

It is situated at a very high location and not everyone can endure a long hike along the steep trail towards it, especially during the hot months of July and August. So it is better for some to reach here by car.

However, if you decide to go hiking, you can be sure that all your efforts will be compensated by the magnificent views that open up from the fort.

But the fortress itself is also open to visitors (or better to say its ruins). You can explore the interior rooms and take a walk around. Local residents claim there are also underground passages beneath the fortress, connecting Španjola with other city towers. But for now, there is not much official information about it as well as no tours.

You just come here on a hike to walk away from all the crowds and enjoy a peaceful environment.

18.) Visit a Sanatorium or Wellness Center in Igalo

When talking about what to do in Herceg Novi, I want to mention a few words about Igalo, a small district rich with mineral waters, mud baths, fresh pine air, and great surrounding for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Igalo is one of my favorite parts of Herceg Novi and I love it mainly for its excellent beaches, beautiful natural landscape, and healing microclimate. But one thing that makes it unique is Igalo’s natural healing mud and mineral springs, which have made it a famous wellness destination in the Balkans.

Igalo district

In fact, many people come to Herceg Novi with one goal only – to go to Igalo to undergo spa procedures, massages, mud treatments, and other procedures aimed at improving health and relaxation.

There are a few major medical centers (like Igalo Institute of Health , Igalo Spa Center , and Igalo Medica ) that offer various treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention programs in various medical fields (cardiology, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, neurology, etc.). You can buy a package from one of these centers inclusive of accommodation, food, doctors’ assessment and treatment, and stay there from a few days to a few weeks.

Otherwise, plan a visit to a smaller hotel that has a spa and wellness center with mineral water like Palmon Bay Hotel & Spa or Igalo Centrar for example. If you don’t intend to stay overnight, then make a call or pay them a visit to make arrangements for a treatment or rejuvenation appointment.

BONUS: What to See & Do Around Herceg Novi

19.) lustica peninsula – with beautiful beaches.

Lustica Peninsula is among the lesser-known places in Montenegro famous for its pristine beaches, charming and quiet small traditional villages like Rose with a sunken ship, and olive groves. The easiest way to visit it is from Herceg Novi since it is located across the bay from the city.

view of Herceg Novi from the water

During the summer, boats to Lustica go to different beaches on the peninsula and depart from Herceg Novi port multiple times during the day.

The largest beach in this area is Žanjic Beach with a few restaurants, hotels, and sunbeds (for the payment). Not far from it, in the bay, you’ll find a small but incredibly cozy beach called Mirište Beach which is known for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views of the open sea. And by the way, if you go there, I recommend you eat at Miriste restaurant on the beach, it has very delicious seafood dishes.

If you are traveling with a family or group of friends and budget allows, rent your own private boat for half a day or for a full day and go to Dobrec Beach in the bay with the same name. It offers solitude and being accessible only by water, this hidden gem offers a tranquil escape.

During the hottest days, the water here is several degrees cooler than the average sea temperature which makes it a nice cool place to travel when it’s hot . With a restaurant, a few sunbeds, and a cozy beach, Dobrec is usually sparsely populated, as it remains relatively unknown to tourists. People who come here are mainly local divers or those on private boats to appreciate the secluded beauty of this area.

20.) Žlijebi – Authentic Montenegrin Village Near Herceg Novi

Zlijebi is a small village located not far from Herceg Novi, to be exact 14 km away from the city in the mountains at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level. It differs from other villages of the same size with stone houses preserved here from ancient times.

Almost everything here is made from local stone – threshing floor, barn, fences, paths, houses. And not only the walls of the houses are built of stones, but also massive stone slabs are stacked on the roofs instead of the usual tiles.

visiting Zlijebi village

Nowadays Zlijebi is abandoned but there is Konoba Sikimic restaurant there and even one restored house that serves as a guesthouse in summer. But from the beginning of the second part of the settlement starts a road (that you can walk) to the church of St. Nikola (coordinates to this church here ) with a cool panoramic view of the sea and Herceg Novi.

So the main reason people come here is to see a unique Montenegro village, eat in a restaurant and take in the views that are gorgeous.

21.) Church of St. Ilija for the View of Croatia

There are many places in Montenegro that offer panoramic views, including the one I mentioned above. But this church, which is only 10 km from the old town of Herceg Novi on the border with Croatia is special in that way that it gives a 360-degree view.

There are also hiking trails in the area and on the way there another viewing platform in the village of Zvinje with views of Herceg Novi.

But my favorite place in that part of the city is the Holiday Lounge Bar with nice Montenegrin food and cocktails and more incredible views of Herceg Novi. Come here in the morning to have a coffee in peace or return in the early evening to look at the city dressing up in lights.

Where to Stay in Herceg Novi

If you are looking for the top places to stay in Herceg Novi, here are some of my top picks!

Best Things to See in Herceg Novi

St. Archangel Michael Church in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

The Church of St. Archangel ( Michael Crkva Sveti Arhangel Mihajlo ) is in the square Belavista, near the center of the old town of Herceg Novi.

It was built during the Austro-Hungarian administration of the city. The church is on the site where the former church, built by Herceg Stefan, once stood. The church was constructed with stone from Korčula, and its interior is decorated with an iconostasis made of white Italian marble.

Savina Monastery in Herceg Novi, Montenengro

The Savina Monastery, located in the eastern part of town, is a must-see attraction in Herceg Novi. It’s named in honor of Archbishop Sava, one of the most worshipped deities of the Serbian Orthodox Church, who built a small church in this town in the XIII century.

The monastery complex consists of three churches: the small Church of the Assumption, the Great Temple of the Assumption, and the Church of St. Sava.

There are also two burial sites on the grounds of the monastery.

Small Church of the Assumption

According to records, the Small Church of the Assumption ( Sveto Uspenje Bogorodice ) dates from 1030. That church has one transept with half circle apsidal, a belfry, and an oculus above the west portal. It was renovated in 1831.

Inside, it’s decorated with frescos of the Great Holidays and Life of Jesus made by the famous Kotor painter Lovro Dobricevic, one of the greatest masters on the coast in the middle of the 15th century. These frescoes are an example of a mixture of Byzantine icon painting and Gothic way of expression.

Great Temple of the Assumption

The Great Temple of the Assumption was built by Nikola Foretic from 1777 to 1799. It represents one of the most beautiful Dalmatian Baroque buildings. The belfry is decorated with wreaths, rosettes, and niches, providing the façade with a baroque silhouette.

The main relic of the monastery, the icon of St. Mary of Sava, is held in the Great Temple. There’s a legend that prayers to this icon saved the city from being destroyed by the Venetian army in the 18th century. When an enemy ship approached, the gathered citizens and monks started praying to the icon to save the church. Then, heavy rain and thunder started, and lightning struck the ship, setting it on fire, killing everyone on board, and repelling the attack.

Church of St. Sava

The Church of St. Sava is near the upper burial site, slightly away from the two churches of the Assumption. It’s presumed to have been built in the 13th century by St. Sava himself. It was renovated two centuries later.

There are several holy relics within the walls of the monastery, including the ashes of Serbian Tsaritsa Elena, Apostle Thomas, and St. George, and the crystal crucifix of St. Sava. The monastery’s library contains over 5,000 texts, including a handwritten copy of the Gospel dated to 1375 and an alphabet book printed in Russia in the late-17th century that the great Montenegran poet and Metropolitan bishop Petar II Njegos used.

Forte Mare in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

It was built in the 14th century at the edge of the sea by Tvkro I, the town’s founder. Part of the defensive wall from that time is preserved on the southeast side of the fortress.

At various times, the fortress was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire, the Venetian Republic, and Austro-Hungary. The fortress was extended and reconstructed over the centuries. Today’s size, shape, and dimensions came about during the Turkish reign.

In the middle of the 16th century, that fort was called “Jaka kula” (“Strong Tower”) or “Kula Apasbase.” Today’s name, Forte Mare, was received in the 18th century during the Venetian reign.

Forte Mare represents one of Herceg Novi’s most significant fortifications and is probably responsible for the construction of the medieval town.

During the summer, the fortress hosts various events, including festivals and dramatic performances.

Pet Danica Promenade in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Pet Danica is an almost 4-mile-long promenade built directly where the Austro-Hungarian railway used to be located. When the railway was disassembled in the 1970s, the Pet Danica walkway was constructed, and the town got its resort-like appearance.

Today, v isitors can enjoy a scenic walk along the promenade from Igalo to Meljine, which offers stunning views and a pleasant atmosphere. It’s a popular place for both tourists and locals to walk and enjoy the various cafes, restaurants, and shops.

Church of the St. Spasa in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

The Church of the Holy Savior is a Serbian Orthodox church in Herceg Novi. It was constructed from 1709 to 1713 next to the Church of St. George. It got its present appearance in 1864 when it was almost completely renovated.

There are many valuables inside the church that famous people have donated.

Kanli Kula Fortress in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Kanli kula is situated in the north part of the old town. The tower’s size and position dominate the city at 279 feet above sea level.

Kanli kula’s exact date of construction cannot be determined, but we know it was first mentioned in written documents in the 17th century. It was used as a fortification system and a prison during Ottoman rule. The name  Kanli kula  is of Turkish origin and means “bloody tower.”

It was rebuilt during the Austro-Hungarian reign and again after the earthquake of 1979.

Today, the fortress has one of the largest amphitheaters in the Adriatic, and during the summer, it hosts various dramatic performances and concerts.

Church of St. Jerome in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

aka Church of St. Jeronimo aka Church of Sveta Jeronima aka St. Joakim Church

St. Jerome’s Church ( Crkva Sv. Jeronima ) is a catholic church in Trg Mića Pavlovića.

The church was built on the spot of an older catholic church dating back to the 17th century. St. Jerome is recognized by the Catholic and the Orthodox churches as the town’s protector.

Its interior is decorated with baroque paintings by Tripo Kokol, a famous painter who lived in the late 17th century and early 18th century.

It is a functional church with regular services.

Clock Tower in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

aka Sahat Kula  aka Tora

The Clock Tower ( Sahat Kula ) is located in Nikola Djurkovic Square. The tower, built during the Ottoman Empire, is one of the oldest clock towers in Montenegro and the heraldic symbol of the city.

The clock tower has had various functions throughout history. It was used to announce the hour of daily prayers to the locals (at the time, there was a mosque nearby), it was the tower gate, and it was used for reconnaissance patrols during wars.

Fortress Spanjola in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

The Spanish first established Fortress Spanjola during their short rule over Herceg Novi in 1538-1539. Over the next decade, its construction was continued by the Ottoman Empire.  In addition to the Ottoman Empire, the fortress has been held by the Venetian Republic, France, Austro-Hungary, and Yugoslavia at various times.

Some sources reference another name for the fortress,  Gorni Grad (or the Upper Town) – a reference to the fort’s location. An underground tunnel connects this part of Herceg Novi to the lower town.

The fortress is now abandoned, and no attempts have been made to preserve it. It is open and accessible to the public. It is accessible on foot or by car. Take the turn to Sbrina Street from Jadranska Magistrala and follow the signs. The fort has a marvelous view of the town and the bay.

Skver City Harbor in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Škver is the name of the small town port with a lighthouse in the middle of the promenade where the railway used to be. Today, the former railway station has been refurbished to house a café, a bar, and an art gallery. There is also a swimming pool for competitions and other open-air events.

Boat tours are also available from the marina. A boat trip to Mamula Island offers the opportunity to visit the Blue Cave and enjoy the beautiful coastline of the Lustica Peninsula. Boats depart several times a day from the main marina, allowing visitors to experience these top sights in the area.

Herceg Novi Walking Tour

If you only have one day (or even just a couple hours) in Herceg Novi, we suggest visiting the recommended sites in the following order:

Following the suggested itinerary will take you past 8 of the 10 Best Things to See in Herceg Novi and through all of the Old Town!  Depending on your level of urgency, it will take about 2hrs to complete the walking tour. This estimate allows time to stop for photos and take a peak inside the churches (along with an occasional drink of water). But it does not include tours of any attractions.

If you have more time, you can see more of the promenade, visit two Serbian churches, and climb up to the Spanish Fortress to take in some fantastic views of the Bay and surrounding mountains. The combined itinerary will take you to all the 10 best things to see in Herceg Novi.

Map of Things to See in Herceg Novi

Our suggested Herceg Novi Walking Tour starts and ends at the Kanli Kula Fortress. Along the way, you will see many interesting architectural buildings in the Old Town, visit the town harbor, and walk a section of the beautiful promenade on your way to the Savina Monastery.

PRO TIP: If you want to see more of the Pet Danica Promenade and take in a bonus sight, keep walking west on the promenade past the harbor towards Topla and visit the Church of the Holy Savior and the Church of St. George . These historic Serbian Orthodox churches are worth a visit if you have a little extra time.

PRO TIP NO. 2: Hike up to the 16th-century Fortress Spanjola to another fortress and get the very best views of the Bay of Kotor with Mount Orjen and Mount Lovcen in the distance . The fortress is abandoned, but it is open and accessible to the public.

Where to stay in Herceg Novi?

There are many great places to stay in Herceg Novi. For the best experience, we recommend staying near the Old Town (the castle marker on the map below). Herceg Novi Travel Guide: Visit Montenegro’s Sunniest City

Drinking coffee at Gradska Kafana in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Herceg Novi is hard to put into words, but this quote by famous Yugoslav poet Ivo Andrić comes pretty close: “This city of eternal greenery, sun and stairs stays stuck between the sea and the hill as a place whose magic can be experienced more and more as a place with the soul.”

Herceg Novi is famous for many things– it’s the sunniest city in Montenegro (it averages around 200 days of sunshine a year!), has a popular mimosa festival every year, and is well-known for its fortresses… but more on that later.

Located at the western end of the country, Herceg Novi is the perfect introduction to Montenegro (if you’re traveling from Croatia) or a fantastic continuation of your trip around Montenegro.

HERCEG NOVI CITY GUIDE Perfect for … Culture and relaxation 😌 Montenegro without the crowds 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 An easy day trip from Croatia 🇭🇷 Forts! So many forts! 🏰

The best way to get acquainted with Herceg Novi is with a little history lesson. *clears throat*

Once upon a time, in western Montenegro a land far far away, a Bosnian King ( Tvrtko I ) founded a tiny fishing village and decided to build a fort. Interestingly enough, the village was originally called Sveti Stefan — although nowadays, that name has been reserved for the ultra-luxurious resort a bit further down the coast. ;)

Anyway, back to the story. The village was located in a strategic location and needed all the fortification it could get… However, that didn’t stop various groups from taking over the city, such as the Turks, then the Spaniards, Italians, Austrians, Russians (even if it was only for 6 months), French, Montenegrins, Austro-Hungarians, Yugoslavians, Italians (again), Yugoslavia (again), and eventually it became part of the Montenegro that it is today.

Phew, wasn’t that quite a story? Thanks to its tumultuous and long history, Herceg Novi is a mixture of interesting architecture, attractions, and traditions that have all left their mark on the city.

Herceg Novi is the perfect city to add to any itinerary — its calm atmosphere, beautiful vantage points, and seaside promenade are sure to delight any visitor!

How many days do I need in Herceg Novi?

We spent 4 days, but you can easily do Herceg Novi in 2 or 3 days depending on how much time you have. Heck, if you’re traveling from Croatia to Montenegro, you can even use Herceg Novi as your stopping point for a day before traveling further inland to Kotor .

HOW TO GET TO HERCEG NOVI

Herceg Novi is the westernmost city in Montenegro, which means it’s easy to get to from another country (Croatia) or by driving along the Bay of Kotor. Here is how to get to Herceg Novi:

tourist information center herceg novi

There are two border crossings that you can use. The ‘main’ one is the border on Debeli Brijeg (Montenegro) and Karasovići (Croatia), which most travelers use when going between the two countries. Further south is the smaller border crossing between Kobila (Montenegro) and Vitaljina (Croatia).

The most popular route is Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi, which usually takes about 1.5 hours one way, although during high tourist season (i.e. June through August) it may take longer.

There are a few companies that operate busses between Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi (such as Blue Line and Čazmatrans), but usually they’re only active during the summer. The average price is around 15 to 20 EUR.

If you’re set on visiting Herceg Novi from Croatia, I recommend getting a private transfer, especially if you’re a group and want to split the cost (which can work out to less than buying a bus ticket individually!)

From Montenegro:   Herceg Novi is well-connected to the rest of Montenegro, which means you can visit no matter where you’re coming from :)

Here’s a quick chart of the distance and approximate travel time (by bus/car):

Kotor to Herceg Novi — 1 hour | 44 km Budva to Herceg Novi — 1 hour 20 mins | 65 km (without ferry) * Tivat to Herceg Novi — 1 hour | 21 km (with ferry) * Podgorica (the capital) to Herceg Novi — 2 hours 20 mins | 107 km (with ferry) *

You can look up schedules on the www.busticket4.me and buy tickets online or at the bus station (although be aware that they tend to be booked up quickly in the summer!)

BUY TICKETS TO HERCEG NOVI HERE

* PRO TIP! When looking at bus tickets online, make sure to pay attention to the total travel time. If you see a bus that has a shorter time frame, it’s most likely because it takes the ferry between Kamenari and Lepetane. Our driver took this route when we traveled from Herceg Novi to Cetinje and it saved us a considerable amount of time!

TRANSPORTATION & GETTING AROUND HERCEG NOVI

Herceg Novi is a bit bigger than other cities in Montenegro (such as Cetinje, Ulcinj , Kotor, and so on) because it’s more vertically spread out along the coast. However, that doesn’t mean it’s hard to get around the city!

There are two main ways of getting around: by taxi (which usually costs a few EUR to get from one end of the city to the other) and by walking. Herceg Novi is divided into two “levels”: the upper part of the city , which has the old town and where the main street (Njegoševa) runs through, and the lower part, which has the beaches and seaside promenade.

Sea Fortress Herceg Novi

WHAT TO DO IN HERCEG NOVI

Go back hundreds of years at Herceg Novi’s forts — It’s no secret that Herceg Novi is obsessed with forts and castles (and that’s putting it lightly).

Now that we’re done with our little history lesson, let’s take a closer look at each of the forts:

🏰 Forte Mare (pictured above) —  Perhaps the most famous fort in Herceg Novi, Forte Mare (Sea Fortress) is a fantastic place to stroll around, enjoy the views of the sea, and feel the history of the city. This fortress is so old that it’s rumored to have some of the original stones that King Tvrtko I used back in the 1300s! By the way, you can see a statue of the King near the promenade, with the fortress in the background. Just a tip if you want a cool photo op. ;)

🏰 Kanli Kula — Although this fort tower looks pretty innocent, it has a sinister backstory: not long after the Turks built the tower, they began to use it as a prison (which is where its name, ‘the bloody tower,’ comes from). In fact, there’s a legend that says the doors to the castle open only one way, because escaping was impossible. Nowadays, the tower is an unassuming outdoor amphitheater that hosts concerts, film festivals, art expositions, opera shows, and so on.

🏰The Spanish Fortress — If you’re up for an adventure, the Tvrdjava Spanjola is calling your name! It’s one of the least visited forts in Herceg Novi because of its location (a solid 1 km hike from the main square) and dilapidated state, but it offers fantastic views over the bay and a history lesson.

🏰Mamula Fortress — Although not technically on the mainland, Mamula deserves its own special mention because it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Herceg Novi. :)

Mamula fortress is actually located on an uninhabited island (also, surprise, called Mamula) and was built by the Austro-Hungarian empire back in the mid-1800s to stop invaders from attacking the cities along the bay. Ironically, not a single cannon shot was fired from the fortress, and in the 1940s it was unfortunately turned into a concentration camp to hold prisoners from nearby areas. Nowadays, the island/fort is completely abandoned, except for the locals (rabbits and birds), as well as tourists who visit the island as part of a tour around the bay. You can check out tours that include Mamula fortress here.

seaside promenade in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Stroll along the seaside promenade & relax on the beach — Herceg Novi has a 7 km-long promenade that stretches from the neighboring town of Igalo all the way to Meljine at the city’s edge. No worries if you don’t want to walk the entire length — just pick a spot and enjoy! The seafront promenade right in front of Herceg Novi features a ton of things to do, from relaxing at the beach to chilling in a cafe, sitting in the park, or strolling along the walkway.

Do some sightseeing in the Old Town — Herceg Novi’s Old Town is conveniently condensed into a few square meters, which means you can see the city’s main sites without spending time going back and forth. Here are a few attractions to check out:

📍 Nikola Djurkovic Square — This small yet cute square has everything you could ever want from a typical plaza in Montenegro: colorful historic houses, cobblestone streets, and outdoor cafes competing with one another to see who can come up with the tastiest ice coffee.

📍 Clock Tower — One of the most recognizable symbols of Herceg Novi, the clock tower was built by the Turks in the mid-1660s and served as the entrance gate to the city’s Old Town. Nowadays, you can find souvenir shops and cafes wedged inside the tower, as well as a staircase to an observation platform.

📍 Church of Michael the Archangel — Tucked away in the main plaza is this beautifully-designed church. Tip: If you go behind the church, there’s a nice lookout / place to sit and people watch. :)

Swim in the Blue Cave — Sure, Montenegro might have the twisting lush valleys along the Tara River, the country’s namesake mountains at Lovćen National Park, and the famous Lake Skadar, but one of its lesser-known natural wonders is located not too far from Herceg Novi!

The Blue Cave (also known as the Blue Grotto) is a cave that sits on the Lustica Peninsula and is only a 20-minute boat ride from Herceg Novi. The cave’s uniqueness comes from the beautiful iridescent hues that light up the waters inside — it almost looks like someone shined a flashlight from below. :)

The easiest way to visit the Blue Cave is on a tour (either a group tour or a private tour), which usually combines other stops along the bay. Here are a few to check out:

Relax at a spa in Igalo — Located 2km to the west of Herceg Novi is the famous spa town of Igalo, which is famous for its healing mud and spa resorts (similar to Soviet-era sanatoriums ).

Igalo’s mud is famous for healing various ailments like inflammation, treating skin conditions, and increasing blood and lymphatic circulation. The mud is ‘harvested’ from the waters of the Bay of Kotor and is used in spas across the city. Speaking of spas, local resorts and hotels like to use this ‘ mud iterranean’ gem in their treatments — one of the best spa hotels in Igalo is Palmon Bay Hotel & Spa (whose spa spans 500m²!) or Institut Dr Simo Milošević (also known as Igalo Institute) if you prefer to do a drop-in session.

Stroll around Tito’s Villa Galeb — We can’t talk about Igalo without mentioning Tito’s Villa!

tourist information center herceg novi

Welcome spring at the mimosa festival — Every February, Herceg Novi hosts the mimosa festival… and no, I don’t mean the bottomless mimosas you order at brunch, I meant the yellow flowers ;)

The mimosa festival started all the way back in 1969 and marks the start of spring with a grand parade, a masqueraded carnival, and gastronomic festivals that attract more than 20,000 visitors every year!

WHERE TO STAY IN HERCEG NOVI ACCOMMODATIONS IN HERCEG NOVI

Apartments Jadran – This was our ‘home base’ for the four days we spent in Herceg Novi, and I believe it’s a very reasonably priced and solid option. We opted for a studio, which was spacious and had a small kitchenette (with mini fridge), balcony, and modern furniture. The apartment is within walking distance to minimarkets and other stores, and a 10-ish minute walk to the center of Herceg Novi. Although it doesn’t mention it in the Booking.com ad, the owners were kind enough to allow me to pay by credit card (they had a terminal for CC payments). :) Book here: Agoda || Booking.com

Lazure Hotel is situated in a historic 18th-century building and can be described in one word: gorgeous. Each room is lavishly decorated in a contemporary style — think marble, abstract shapes, and natural decor. The hotel also has plenty of plush amenities like an indoor pool, garden, three restaurants (!) and a wine bar, a sauna, and beach access.

While looking through the reviews, this one was my favorite: “If we knew [the hotel] would be so good, we would’ve stayed in it for the whole journey to Montenegro!” — and I think that says it all. Book here: Agoda || Booking.com || Hotels.com

WHERE TO EAT IN HERCEG NOVI

☕️ Gradska Kafana – Gradska Kafana is one of the most well-known cafes in Herceg Novi, with a history that spans more than 100 years back! It was originally founded in the early 1900s and still maintains its historic charm: the menus are in the form of an old-style newspaper from the era, and the waiters are dressed in early century-inspired costumes.

Gradska Kafana is located on a small cliff overlooking the bay and features a nice mix of Montenegrin cuisine along with seafood, Italian and European dishes, as well as an extensive drink menu (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

☕️ Peter’s Pie & Coffee – A true local haunt, Peter’s is always crowded with travelers and locals who want to relax and enjoy a nice view. They serve healthy vegetarian food, coffee, and smoothies.

🦞 Admiral Club Herceg Novi — Fresh seafood, amazing views of the bay, and a romantic atmosphere — what more could you ask for?

🍻 Pub Got — This pub probably has one of the most photogenic exteriors in all of Herceg Novi as well as delicious drinks for a modest price.

🍷 Savina Winery — Last but certainly not least is Herceg Novi’s very own winery! This small boutique winery specializes in excellent, full-flavored wines and offer rose, chardonay, merlot and cabernet sauvignon, among others. Wine connoisseurs can enjoy a tasting and tour throughout the estate – just be sure to call or reserve in advance.

very helpful information

I’m really enjoying reading your posts about Montenegro. I’m going to be in Kotor for 3 weeks and then I’d like to try another city for 3/4 weeks after, so I’m wondering where you’d recommend – it’s pretty hard to chose! I’d like to stay in a city where I can walk to the beach or chill with a coffee and book in the old town. I’m also traveling myself so somewhere that I could meet other travelers as well would be ideal. Where would you recommend for me based on this?

Many thanks!

Heya Leah! Thank you so much :) Besides Herceg Novi, I think Budva or Ulcinj fits your criteria – both have beaches within walking distance, a fair number of tourists, and a nice Old Town

Luda, thank you SO much. You have done an absolute amazing job of detailing travel to Montenegro.

Thank you Kym! :)

The Best Itinerary for Herceg Novi

Ilda Kurpejovicc

Herceg Novi , located at the very end of the Bay of Kotorska, is notable for its distinct blend of Mediterranean charm, cultural heritage, and beautiful beaches. It is a little of the beaten path but a gorgeous (and hidden) place for visitors who are looking for a laid back and relaxed vibe. If you are in Montengro for some time, make room for Herceg Novi – and for that purpose we have what we believe to be the best itinerary for Herceg Novi . Herceg Novi may be a comparatively unknown destination compared to other cities along Montenegro’s coast, such as Budva or Kotor , but it should definitely not be overlooked. It is more of a place for people who prefer quieter cities compared to Budva or Kotor , with enough things to explore. This city has a lot to offer visitors, including a rich history and stunning natural scenery. Its unique atmosphere and authentic charm are frequently overlooked in favor of more popular destinations.

Morning and breakfast

When planning out a one-day trip to any city in the world, one of the first things you have to consider is breakfast – Read about our article on the typical Montenegrin breakfast . When talking about Montenegro, you should never miss out on a breakfast at local bakeries. I suggest having breakfast at one of the neighborhood cafes or bakeries along the main promenade in the city. A wide variety of pastries, croissants, homemade cakes, and fresh fruit juices are available here.

If you are looking for a place that offers a variety of patisseries, my personal favorite is Pekara Tajna My recommendation for anyone visiting Montenegro is definitely a burek with cheese paired with yogurt (this will fill you up for the morning and give you enough energy to start your day). For this option, I recommend Pekara Panino 2 , which is located in the old town of Herceg Novi.

While you savor your breakfast, observe the city as it starts to awaken. While visitors are organizing their plans for the day, locals are beginning to gather in cafes. The laid-back vibe is perfect for a leisurely start to the day. One more bonus recommendation, if you are a fan of coffee I recommend grabbing your coffee at Fabrika Coffee which is located in the old town of Herceg Novi (it is my favorite coffee place and most definitely will not disappoint).

Before noon

Once you have refueled with a delicious breakfast, it’s time to begin discovering the fascinating historical and cultural gems of Herceg Novi ’s old town. With its lengthy and rich history, this city provides you with an experience that will last a lifetime.

tourist information center herceg novi

Follow the narrow stone streets through the old town. You’ll notice right away that the old town has an energy of the past about it, and that every stone and wall has a story to tell. Wander past the walls of Kanli Tower , a former military stronghold that is now the location of several local artists’ studios and galleries. As to my last knowledge, the entrance to the Forte Kanli is 3 euros per person.

Continue towards the Clock Tower, a commanding structure that reflects the rich past of the city. You can get a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea and the city harbor from there. The clock tower is located at the entrance of the Old Town, between Đurković and Herceg Stefan squares. Sultan Mahmud ordered the construction of the 16-meter-high tower in 1667. The tower is not only a tourist attraction in Herceg Novi , but it is also the city’s main symbol, appearing on the city flag and all promotional materials.

Remember to pay a visit to the Church of St. Jerome . The monumental church of St. Jerome was built in the Old Town on the site of a former mosque. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the church of St. Jerome received its final appearance with a base in the form of a Latin cross. The interior design and architecture of the church amaze every visitor.

tourist information center herceg novi

Don’t forget to stop by the numerous viewpoints distributed throughout the city when you’re exploring the old town. Every one of them provides a different perspective of the blue ocean and the surrounding mountains. Take a seat on the bench and take in the peace and beauty of the surroundings (you will get to learn that Montenegrins really enjoy the pleasure of leisure, so try to adapt to it as this will give you the ultimate experience of being a local).

Heceg Novi

Noon & lunch

It is time to eat once you get hungry! Visit one of the traditional restaurants along the coast to sample local cuisine. the restaurant I would recommend for lunch is “Konoba Feral” . This restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and traditional Montenegrin dishes. Located right next to the coast, it offers a beautiful view of the sea, which will additionally complete your gastronomic experience. The prices of meals in the “Konoba Feral” range from 10 to 25 euros per person, depending on the choice of food and drink.

tourist information center herceg novi

My recommendation is getting a mixed seafood dish, or as I have chosen this time grilled fish which comes served with vegetables. Along with a variety of delicious dishes, don’t forget to top off your meal with a glass of regional wine to help round out your lunch experience.

After lunch, unwind on one of Herceg Novi ’s stunning beaches. Zanjice Beach is an ideal spot to swim, sunbathe, or just take in the peace and quiet while listening to the waves. This beach, which is situated on the southwest coast of Luštica Bay, is breathtaking because of its natural beauty and crystal-clear sea. If you’re seeking peace and quiet away from the crowd and notice of city, Zanjice Beach is the perfect spot.

tourist information center herceg novi

For lovers of outdoor activities, Zanjice Beach offers various opportunities for exploration. You can rent a kayak or pedal boat and explore nearby coves and hidden caves.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something busier, then you should pay a visit to the local beach of Herceg Novi – Topla Plaza . It is partly owned by the hotel. The beach consists of several beaches, with there being a combination of sand and concrete plots. The beach is within walking distance of the bus station and the main entertainment.

Montenegro Tours

Getting Around Montenegro: To fully explore the stunning mountains and beautiful beaches, a car is essential 🚗⛰️🏖️. We highly recommend using LocalRent for the most affordable rental rates.

Later in the afternoon

It’s time for a little adventure after you’ve relaxed on the beach and restored your energy from being close to the water! Explore the Forte Mare fortress , which is situated directly on Herceg Novi ’s shoreline. One of the city’s most significant historical and cultural attractions is this huge fortress, which was built in the fourteenth century. You will be rewarded with an amazing view of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding landscapes when you reach the top. From there, you can see the mountains that surround this beautiful city as well as the entire Bay of Boka Kotorska. The entrance to the Forte Mare is two euros per person.

tourist information center herceg novi

It is located near Herceg Novi ’s main pier. Tvdko I, Bosnia’s ruler, built the fortress in the 14th century to protect the area from sea attacks. The Ottoman Empire, the Venetian Republic, and Austria-Hungary all controlled the fortress at different points in time. The fortress was extended and reconstructed over centuries, which is why it is now in perfect condition and open to the public.

The fortress of Forte Mare not only provides breathtaking views but also a chance to delve deeper into the rich past of this city. You can view museum displays and exhibitions there that represent life in Herceg Novi throughout its history. Discover the history of the soldiers who once called these walls home, as well as the part this fortress played in defending the city and its trade routes.

Dinner at the sunset

Now is the perfect time to enjoy a sunset dinner. I suggest finding a restaurant with a terrace and a stunning view of the sea for a truly memorable meal.

For this reason, “Taverna Splendido” is the place I would suggest. This popular restaurant, which blends flavors from around the world with local ingredients, is conveniently situated in the city of Herceg Novi . Their terrace is the perfect location for a sunset dinner because it provides a breathtaking view of the sea and the setting sun.

A meal at the “ Splendido” restaurant will likely cost you between 20 and 40 euros per person, depending on what you choose to eat and drink. My usual and favorite order is grilled octopus, however, this time I have opted out for seafood pasta which did not disappoint, and I highly recommend it.

tourist information center herceg novi

If you are not exhausted from the itinerary I have created for your visit to Herceg Novi , then there is one final spot I will recommend. After you are done with the food , take a walk next to the pier and head over to Pub Got . This pub is special because of its looks. Herceg Novi: Top Montenegro Destination

For those planning a trip to Montenegro, Herceg Novi is becoming a popular choice. The resort town stretches along the northern coast on the western end of the Bay of Kotor, just opposite the opening to the Adriatic Sea.

Herceg Novi History

The history of Herceg Novi dates to the year 1382. Originating as a fishing village, Stefan Tvrtko I Kotromanic – the first King of Bosnia, built a fortress in Herceg Novi. The city went on to thrive in the salt trade and became an important port.

However, Herceg Novi then experienced tumultuous times. Beginning in 1482, the area was ruled by the Turks, Spaniards, Italians, Habsburgs, French, Illyrian Provinces, and the Austro Hungarians. Post WWI, it became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

After the break up of Yugoslavia in the nineties, Herceg Novi was included in the short lived union of Serbia & Montenegro. In 2006, Montenegro – or Crna Gora – declared independence with Herceg Novi as the 3rd largest city in the new country.

The complicated past and vast array of rulers have each left their mark on this region of the Balkans – from architecture to culture – many of which survive today.

#1 Discover Herceg Novi Old Town

Picturesque land of Old Town, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Discovering the small Old Town tops our list of Herceg Novi things to do. Stari Grad Herceg Novi is comprised of just a few pedestrian-only streets sandwiched between two fortresses, one at the top of the Old Town and the other just above the sea.

The steep, narrow, twisting lanes in Old Town Herceg Novi pass by colorful houses, vibrant flora and pretty squares.

We highly recommend rambling through the oldest part of Herceg Novi – and highlight a few of the must-see Old Town sights throughout our list.

#2 See the Sea Fortress

View of the Sea Fortress, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

One of the best Herceg Novi attractions, the Forte Mare Fortress is impressive…and impossible to miss! The 14th century stone Mare Fortress sits right on the shoreline of Herceg Novi Bay atop a rocky outcrop.

The magnificent and mighty fortifications provide stunning views of the coastline and the Bay of Kotor. Visitors can enter the fort for a small fee.

#3 Snap a Photo Under the Herceg Novi Clock Tower

Stairs leading to the Clock Tower, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Once the main gate into the Herceg Novi Stari Grad, the Clock Tower is a symbol of the city. The defensive tower was built in 1667 under Turkish rule.

The stairs that lead up to the clock tower are a popular spot to stop for photo ops. However, as you walk under the tower, don’t miss the “Black Madonna” artwork made from burnt wood that hangs inside.

#4 Take in the Views from Kanli Kula

Bloody Tower aka Kanli Kula Fortress, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Kanli Kula – which translates to Bloody Tower – is the fortress that sits at the top of the Herceg Novi Old Town. Dating to the 16th century, the fort was used as a prison.

Today, however, Kanli Kula is a concert venue with seats for 1,000 guests. The panoramic views from Fort Kanli Kula sweep over the Bay of Kotor.

#5 Stand in St. Jerome Square

View the St Jerome Square, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

During your Old Town Herceg Novi sightseeing, make your way to the spacious and picturesque St. Jerome Square (also called Mico Pavlovic Square). The St. Jerome Catholic Church that sits on the square was built in the 17th century and named for the city’s Patron Saint.

The square is often void of tourists and quiet – except for the sound of instruments being played at the music school next door.

Take in the sea views from the area next to the bell tower and from the raised platform across from the church.

Walk down the steps opposite the church entrance and pass the Monument to the Heroes of Naval Battles on the Adriatic – identifiable by the large anchor. Continue down the steps and around to the left to the charming Church of St. Leopold Mandic.

#6 Light a Candle at the St. Arhangel Mihailo Church

View of Bellavist Square, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Bellavista Square marks the center of the Old Town – and St. Arhangel Mihailo Orthodox Church stands in the middle of it – along with the Old Town Water Fountain.

The Saint Michael Archangel Church was only built in the 19th century and features a smattering of architectural styles, including Byzantine, Roman-gothic and Islamic. Korcula stone was used for the exterior carvings on the church, while the interior is decorated in Italian marble. Go inside and listen to the peaceful music and light a candle.

Visitors wondering what to do in Herceg Novi in the early evening should consider having a drink or late lunch at one of the restaurants that ring Bellavista Square. The outdoor tables at Bellavista Lounge offer the best views – especially when the late afternoon sunlight illuminates the church portico.

#7 Visit the St. Savina Monastery

View of the Savina Monastery, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

One of the best things to see in Herceg Novi is the St. Savina Monastery complex. Sitting on lush grounds of old cypresses and fruitful vineyards, the monastery offers a serene retreat from the city center.

The complex – which is free to enter – is comprised of three churches, including one that dates to the year 1030. Guests can also visit a small museum, the elevated cemetery (which offers wonderful vistas) and the gift shop, where they sell bottles of wine made from the cultivated grapes.

#8 Explore the Abandoned Spanjola Fortress, Herceg Novi

View of the Spanish Fortress, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Fort Španjola Herceg Novi is the upper town fortress – and one of the absolutely fascinating places to explore. It’s a steep uphill hike to the fortress, but it’s well worth the effort (or grab a taxi for a ride up).

Sitting atop Bajer Hill and peeking out above the neighborhood just below it, the abandoned fortress is overgrown and crumbling in some sections, but the views are nothing short of phenomenal.

The doors to the fortress are open and visitors are free to roam along the paths, atop the walls and into the dark buildings (so bring a flashlight).

Construction of the fort began in 1538, during the one-year rule of the Spaniards, but was never completed. The remains of that original fort were demolished by the Turks and completely replaced in the mid-1500s and subsequently modified by various rulers over the years.

#9 Spend an Afternoon at a Herceg Novi Museum

House of Ivo Andric, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Those looking for things to do in Herceg Novi when it rains (or when it is too hot) can visit a museum. In fact, there are two museums in Herceg Novi, Montenegro that are recommended: the City Museum and the Iva Andrica House.

The Gradski Muzej Herceg Novi displays artifacts and exhibits showcasing the history of the municipality. The museum occupies a former house – and some rooms feature everyday items once used by local residents. For many visitors, the highlight of the Herceg Novi City Museum is the garden, which offers nice views over Boka Bay.

The House of Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić is another interesting Herceg Novi museum. While the house contains little of his personal affects (he only lived there for five years in the 1960s), it does detail the story of his life. Tickets are inexpensive and include a tour.

#10 Stop by the Church of the Holy Salvation

Church of the Holy Salvation, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Located in the Topla District, the Church of St. Salvation – or Crkva Sv. Spasa – is one of the top Herceg Novi places to visit.

The Orthodox church was built in 1709…and then completely renovated in 1864 to the style still evident today. The church grounds are inclusive of the smaller Church of St. George and a cemetery.

#11 Size Up the Statue of King Tvrtko I Kotromanich

Seaside location of Tvrtko Square, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Tvrtko Square is a beachfront piazza in Herceg Novi. What to see on the square is the towering King Tvrtko I Kotromanic Statue that stands at the middle of it.

Rather than looking out to the bay, Tvrtko is looking up at the city that he founded. The statue is prominently placed at the base of the Sea Fort along the pedestrian promenade right next to the Herceg Novi Marina.

#12 Look Down at the Collapsed Citadela in the Sea

The collapsed Citadel, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Built on the very edge of the sea, the Mastel-Mezzaluna Citadel was long the first line of defense from sea invaders. The Citadel stood for hundreds of years as part of Herceg Novi’s strong fortification system.

However, during the devastating 1979 earthquake, it broke apart and collapsed into the sea, where it still sits to this day.

Explorers can carefully walk onto the ancient foundations and look down into the clear blue sea to view the ruins as they are washed over by the waves.

#13 Hike through the Savina Forest

Trail through the Savina Forest, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

One of the lesser-known things to do in Herceg Novi is to hike through the dense Savina Forest. A network of trails traverses the protected area, which is home to a variety of flora and fauna.

Trekkers can follow the shaded paths through the forest to the Savina Monastery and the town of Meljine.

#14 Sip Wine at the Savina Winery

Vineyards at Savina Winery, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Boasting a spectacular viewpoint, the Castel Savina Winery offers visitors a unique vineyard-and-wine tasting experience.

Guests are provided with a guided tour, three tastings of wine and nibbles of local fare. The price is a bit steep for the region, but the wine is some of the best in Montenegro. Savina Winery Tours must be booked in advance.

#15 Enjoy an amazing Herceg Novi View…from a Parking Lot

Best Views of Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Visitors seeking a stellar view in Herceg Novi for free can find one in a bit of an odd spot: the Dubrava Parking Lot .

This viewpoint, which sits atop an abandoned building that is covered in litter and broken glass, does offer unobstructed panoramic vistas of the Kanli Kula Tower, St. Jerome Church Bell Tower and the entrance to Kotor Bay.

#16 Stroll the Waterfront Promenade in Herceg Novi

Walk the Waterfront Promenade, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

The pedestrian-only waterfront promenade, called Šetalište Pet Danica Walkway, is a coastal path that stretches for nearly 4.5 miles.

To the west, the walkway follows the curves of the coast past cafes and beaches to the city of Igalo. Eastbound, the path reaches to the town of Meljine and the posh Lazure Marina Hotel & Marina .

The promenade is popular both day and night as a place to stroll and take in the views across the bay and the soaring mountains above.

#17 Eat Ice Cream at Do Do Café

On hot summer days, the waterfront stroll is best enjoyed with an ice cream cone in hand!

The best ice cream shop in Herceg Novi is Do Do Café, which has two locations right along the Pet Danica Walkway. The shop offers a variety of flavors and single dip cones are delicious and cheap.

However, for a real sweet treat, sit down at a waterfront table for an indulgent sundae.

#18 Venture inside Tito’s Villa Galeb

Inside of Galeb Tito Villa, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

For visitors interested in learning more about the Yugoslav era, Tito’s Villa is a Herceg Novi must see.

The nearly 60,000 square foot Villa Galeb was built in just 6 months in 1976 for Yugoslavia President Tito. One of 33 official residences, Tito stayed in the palatial residence just four times before his death in 1980.

Visitors can join one of the guided tours to see inside the villa, including Tito’s private living quarters and the communal bomb shelter. Tour times vary by season and day of week, so it’s best to check at the Igalo Tourist Information Office during your stay.

#19 Splash around at Herceg Novi Beaches

Best Beaches in Herceg Novi, Montenegro

When the weather is warm, it is hard to resist spending time on a Herceg Novi beach. In fact, it’s the best thing to do in the summer months!

The beaches in Herceg Novi run all along the shoreline. There are small pebble beaches, where swimmers ease into the water and large concrete beaches that are perfect for diving right into the sea. The beaches do get very crowded in the peak summertime season and at most spots you can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas.

Some of the best beaches in Herceg Novi, Montenegro are Herceg Novi Plaza (near the marina), Plaza Topla Herceg Novi (in the Topla District), Rafaello Plaza Herceg Novi (near a strip of cafes and restaurants) and Bla Bla Beach (which is to the east of town).

#20 Watch Sunset in Herceg Novi

When it comes to what to see in Herceg Novi, the sunset should not be missed!

Some of the best places to watch the sunset are from the fortresses or #28 on our list, but the beaches and seaside cafes offer a nice vantage point, as well.

#21 Embark on a Montenegro Tour

Pavlova Strana Viewpoint, Great Montenegro Tour

While Boka Bay is, no doubt, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Montenegro, the surrounding area is also stunning. Dramatic peaks rise sharply from the sea – and a serpentine road out of Kotor enables visitors to embark on a journey into those mountains and beyond.

The Great Montenegro full day tour features gorgeous mountain peaks, pristine lakes and ancient villages. The highlights are Lovcen National Park, Cetinje (the former royal capital of Montenegro), a boat ride on the Crnojević River that flows into Skadar Lake and a stop for the scenic view of the famous Montenegro islet, Sveti Stefan near Budva.

The tour is excellent for travelers who want to see more of Montenegro but are short on time. Book it here !

Bottle of Nik Beer, Kotor, Montenegro

Beach clubs, waterfront cafes and fun bars are all part of the energetic nightlife in Herceg Novi during the summer season.

That said, there are plenty of places to sip a glass of Montenegrin wine or cool down with a local beer.

Local Craft Beer

Outdoor tables at Pub GOT, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Our go-to spot for a refreshing brew is Pub GOT , where they serve local craft beer on tap from Fabrika (based in nearby Risan). Grab a seat at one of the outdoor tables on the steps (but be sure to take a peek inside the fun pub, too!).

Another Montenegrin craft beer to look for is Mammut, which hails from Niksic (also home to the country’s mass-produced beer, Niksicko).

Montenegro Rakija Drinks

Loza is the local and basic rakija in Montenegro – and the potent drink is worth a try.

However, on hot summer nights, a Pelinkovac – served with a slice of lemon and ice – is a great after-dinner drink!

#28 Have a Coffee at Grandska Kafana, Herceg Novi

View from Grandska Kavana, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

The grand Gradska Kafana is one of the best places in Herceg Novi for a coffee, drink or meal. The long patio offers picture-perfect views of the Sea Fort and the Bay of Kotor.

The classy waiters are quick and kind – and drinks are much more affordable than you would think for the premier location!

#29 Eat at the Best Restaurants in Herceg Novi

Patio tables at Bife Beograd, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

One of the things we love about Montenegro – and the Balkans, in general – is the amazing food. The restaurants in Herceg Novi did not disappoint! While there are numerous places to eat in Herceg Novi, we are featuring a few of our favorites.

Restoran Herceg Novi Beograd

The Bife Beograd Restaurant is an iconic place for meal in Herceg Novi. An institution in the city, Beograd has been open since the 1930s. While the street-level seats are great for a coffee or drink, we recommend heading upstairs to a table with a view for dinner.

The food at Beograd is superb. From tasty pizzas to massive burgers to decadent steak dishes (the beef steak tagliata was divine!), every bite is delicious. Start with the antipasti platter – and take it from there, you can’t go wrong!

One of the absolute best restaurants in Herceg Novi, Tri Lipe delivers in every way possible! Take a seat in the shaded garden patio and prepare for a feast.

Known for their grilled meats, fresh seafood and huge portions (at amazing prices), we think it is best to order a couple of different dishes and share them at the table. The mixed grill (an assortment of meats on a platter) and seafood risotto are on point!

Tri Lipe is also one of the best places in Herceg Novi to get fast food grilled meat sandwiches to go. The incredibly inexpensive fare (just 3 euros for a massive pljeskavica burger) is grilled and served plain – and then you get to add your own toppings. Yum!

Konoba Karaca

A bit of a hidden gem, Konoba Karaca is one of the Herceg Novi restaurants that is frequented by locals and tourists alike. Each dish is prepared to order (so it may take a little longer than other places) and the atmosphere is casual and authentic.

Mussels are a popular dish, but we ordered the whole grilled fish, black risotto and local meat and cheese as a starter. The food tasted phenomenal, the service was friendly and it was well-priced, too!

Pekara Penino 2

A modern bakery near the Herceg Novi market, Pekara Penino is a go-to spot for traditional burek (a Balkan meat pastry) and divine desserts.

Herceg Novi Travel Tips

Best Views and more Herceg Novi Travel Tips

Now that you know all of the best Herceg Novi things to do, we have a few tips for your trip. Remember to check out our Travel Tips for Europe Vacations , too.

Where is Herceg Novi, Crna Gora

Herceg Novi is located on the shore of Boka Bay in western Montenegro. The city is just 7 miles from the Croatia border.

How To Get to Herceg Novi

There is no Herceg Novi Airport; the closest airport is in Dubrovnik, Croatia – but there are nearby airports in Tivat and Podgorica, Montenegro. Read our top tips for Finding the Best Airfare and then start your search on Skyscanner .

Dubrovnik Airport to Herceg Novi

From the airport, the Dubrovnik – Herceg Novi distance is just 18 miles – but it does require a border crossing, which can take some time depending on traffic.

Private Transfer to Herceg Novi from Dubrovnik Airport

The easiest way to get from the DBV Airport to Montenegro is with a private driver. We recommend booking a private transfer  in advance.

Shuttle Bus Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi

The most affordable way to travel from the Dubrovnik Airport is by shuttle bus. On the return trip, the shuttle bus from Herceg Novi to Dubrovnik can be booked at a tourist agency.

Regional Bus from Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi

Travelers already in Dubrovnik can hop on a regional bus from the Dubrovnik Bus Station. The Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi Bus is affordable (about $20 USD) and efficient. Although travel times are listed at an hour, our recent ride took about 1.5 hours with only a short time at the border crossing.

Visitors coming from Split , Croatia will not find a Split – Herceg Novi Bus. Instead, take a bus (or catamaran) from Split to Dubrovnik and then a bus from Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi.

Tivat Airport to Herceg Novi

The Tivat-Herceg Novi Bus is not ideal – as the local buses do not make a stop at the airport. Instead, the best Herceg Novi – Tivat route is with a private driver .

Podgorica to Herceg Novi

Getting to Herceg Novi from Podgorica Airport is best with a private driver, as public transit options are slim and complicated. We recommend booking a driver from Podgorica to Herceg Novi (and vice versa, from Herceg Novi to Podgorica) – like this one – in advance.

How To Get Around Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Getting around Herceg Novi is best done on two feet. Many of the lanes are pedestrian only – and the waterfront promenade is a great route to travel between sights, beaches and restaurants.

That said, nearly all of Herceg Novi sits on a steep hillside – so naturally there are stairs…a lot of stairs. In fact, the stairs are impossible to avoid and not in the best condition. There are many staircases that connect throughout town, but most are uneven and without railings, so visitors with mobility constraints will want to take that into consideration.

Visitors who want the freedom to explore beyond town should consider renting a car . Just bear in mind that parking is very limited and the road rules are very liberal – so perhaps only rent a car for taking full day trips. Before you make your reservation, read our tips for Getting the Best Car Rental .

Blue Line Herceg Novi Bus

There is a local bus in Herceg Novi. The Blue Line Bus #1 runs the coastal road from Kamenari (where you can catch the Ferry to Tivat) to Herceg Novi and then on to Igalo. The Blue Line #2 bus makes stops in Meljine, Herceg Novi and Igalo.

Autobuska Stanica Herceg Novi, Main Bus Station

Visitors arriving by bus – or traveling to other destinations on Boka Bay – will arrive and depart at the Herceg Novi Bus Station, which is located above the Old Town on the main coastal road (E65).

Unfortunately, there is no Herceg Novi to Kotor Ferry – travelers need to take a Herceg Novi – Kotor Bus from the main bus station. Same goes for getting from Herceg Novi to Perast or Budva.

Best Time To Go to Herceg Novi

The best time to travel to Herceg Novi depends on your interests and budget. There are pros and cons to visiting in every season.

Summertime – High Season

For many visitors, the summer months are the best time to go to Herceg Novi. The weather in Herceg Novi in the summer is hot and full of sunshine – which is perfect for long days at the beach and on the water.

Herceg Novi is a very seasonal destination…and everything is open in the peak summertime (really just July and August). However, the prices for accommodations are highest in the summer, beaches can get crowded and loud and some restaurants are difficult to get into.

Autumn and Spring – Shoulder Season

The shoulder season can also be a great time to visit Herceg Novi, Montenegro. There are far fewer crowds, and the Herceg Novi weather is slightly cooler – but usually nice enough to be outdoors and possibly even warm enough for a swim in the sea. Plus, prices are slightly better for accommodations.

The downside to traveling in the shoulder season is that not everything is open. In fact, many of the waterfront shops, restaurants and cafes only open in the height of the summer season.

Winter – Low Season

Wintertime visitors will find rock bottom prices – but not much open in the way of restaurants and shops. The city will be void of crowds. The weather is crisp, but the sun often still shines – which is perfect for long coastal walks and hikes in the mountains.

Weather Forecast Herceg Novi

Before your trip, check the Herceg Novi weather forecast on Weather.com .

Where To Stay in Herceg Novi

As a seaside resort town, there is no shortage of hotels in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. In fact, visitors have a wide range of choice in accommodation in Herceg Novi – from luxury properties to family-run guesthouses to vacation rentals.

Herceg Novi Hotels

We are featuring a few of the top-rated hotels in Herceg Novi in a range of prices. You can also search for hotels on Booking.com – but first, read our tips for Booking the Best Hotels at the Best Price .

Garni Hotel Bokeška Noć

A family-owned guesthouse just east of the city center and within a short walk to a small beach, Garni Hotel features balcony rooms with sea views. Some rooms have kitchens – but an included breakfast is made fresh daily by the owner and served on the patio. Check availability!

Hunguest Hotel Sun Resort Herceg Novi

The Sun Resort Hotel in Herceg Novi is a large, beachfront property that offers rooms at affordable rates. The hotel has a pool – and guests have free use of loungers and umbrellas at the private beach area, as well. However, the rooms are slightly dated and there are no balconies. Check rates!

Palmon Bay Hotel

Modern and chic, the Palmon Bay Hotel in Igalo is a top choice for a stylish stay. The hotel gets rave reviews for the terrace dining, spa services, waterfront pool and beach and exceptional service. Check rates and availability!

Iberostar Herceg Novi Hotel

An all-inclusive Herceg Novi hotel, Iberostar offers luxury amenities in an absolutely sublime setting. The beachfront resort sits across the bay from Hergec Novi and features a pool, restaurant and 4 bars. Check rates for your stay!

Herceg Novi Apartments

There are many vacation rentals and holiday apartments in Herceg Novi – most of which are bigger and more affordable than hotel rooms. We recommend booking one of the sea view apartments in Herceg Novi that offer breathtaking views of Kotor Bay.

Travelers can find apartments on Booking.com or Airbnb . Note : If you choose to stay in an apartment, you will likely need to register and pay the Montenegro Tourist Tax on your own (the fee is included when staying at hotels and they take care of the registration for you). In order to accomplish this, your host (or owner, if different) will need to provide you an ownership document to take with you to the Tourist Information Office (along with your passport). The tourist tax fee for Herceg Novi is one Euro per day, per guest.

Shopping Herceg Novi

As a resort town, there are many places for shopping in Herceg Novi. In the Old Town and along the waterfront, most shops cater to tourists – offering souvenirs, swimwear and beach gear.

The biggest shopping center in Herceg Novi is the HDL Novi Mall, which is west of the city center near the Croatian border.

The small produce market in Herceg Novi is tucked into a little plaza just off the big square under the clock tower. Not only is it a good place to pick up fresh, in-season produce, but the vendors also sell olive oil and some souvenirs.

Travelers who book Herceg Novi accommodations with a kitchen can stock up on groceries at one of the many stores in the city. We personally like the Aroma City Market grocery store near the main bus station, but there is an Idea and Voli near the Old Town.

What To Pack for your Trip to Montenegro

Go on a Cruise of the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro

Our final travel tips for Herceg Novi, Montenegro are what to pack for your trip! You can find all of our advice on our Packing Tips page – and you can get your Free Packing Checklist !

Comfortable Shoes

As we mentioned, it’s best to get around Herceg Novi on your own two feet – so don’t forget to pack a good pair of walking shoes. My favorite travel shoes are versatile and lightweight sneakers  – but I wear my good flip flops  to get to and from the beach.

Make sure to pack your best beach gear! Your accommodations will likely supply towels, but you will need to pack your swimsuit , a floppy beach hat , good sunscreen and polarized sunglasses . Of course, you will need a great travel day bag to carry it all in, as well!

The water in Boka Bay is clear – so bring snorkel gear if you have it. Also, bring water shoes that you can wear on the pebble beaches (trust us on this one!).

Travel Camera

Herceg Novi, Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor are incredibly photogenic! We recommend upgrading to a real camera for your trip. We use a Canon Rebel with an everyday 18-135mm lens . It takes excellent quality photos and is a great budget camera for travelers .

Montenegro Travel Insurance

Trip Insurance could protect against lost luggage and delayed flights, and might cover cost in the unfortunate case of injury or illness while traveling .

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Where Is Herceg Novi Montenegro

The city of Herceg Novi is located on the westernmost area in Montenegro, a location that makes it easy to reach from other Balkan countries , especially from Croatia , or if you are touring the country, from any other point along the Bay of Kotor.

How To Get To Herceg Novi Montenegro

Herceg Novi is located on the northern coast of Montenegro on the Adriatic Sea, very close to Croatia. If you are touring Montenegro , there is no problem reaching Herceg Novi from any point in the country as the city has good roads and convenient connections with the most important areas in Montenegro.

Herceg Novi is about 1 hour from Kotor , a bit more from other areas as you might need to use the ferry:

  • Podgorica is about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Herceg Novi.
  • Tivat and Budva are about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Herceg Novi.

More details here .

Herceg Novi is just 10 kilometers from the border with Croatia so it can be an interesting day trip from the neighboring country  or a 2-3 day stop in your Balkan itinerary . Don’t forget to have your passport with you .

To reach Montenegro from Croatia, you can cross through the border on Karasovici (called Debeli Brijeg on the Montenegro side). This is the more important one and tends to be more crowded. As an alternative, you can cross at Vitaljina (Kobila on the Montenegro side).

The trip from Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi takes about an hour and a half, and it can vary according to the traffic, especially in summer.

It’s also possible to travel between Dubrovnik and Herceg Novi by bus. The service is available in summer, and the ticket is about 16 euro. However, the most comfortable way to make the trip is with your own car or hiring a private transfer .

Important Things To Know About Herceg Novi

The clock-tower and the gate to the Old town Herceg Novi_Montenegro

Herceg Novi is a quiet town at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor , which proved a strategic location that attracted various civilizations over the centuries. In fact, the city was overtaken and ruled by as many civilizations as you can imagine, including the Ottomans, the Spanish, and the Venetians, but also the Russians, the French, Austro-Hungary, Serbia Army, Italy, Germany, and the former Yugoslav Republic.

All these occupations along different periods left a visible trace on the local culture, architecture and spirit.

Despite its turbulent past, the beautiful town of Herceg Novi Montenegro is now a pleasant summer destination where families, couples, and friends come to relax and enjoy some wellness time by the sea. Near the area of Igalo, tourists enjoy visiting the mineral springs of Igalo, Igaljske Slatin, and taking advantage of Herceg Novi’s famous healing sea mud known as Igalo Mud (igaljsko blato).

Going To The Beach In Herceg Novi

If you’re planning to spend some time on the beach, it is important to know that there are no major sandy beaches along the coast; however, beaches can be reached by boat heading to the Lustica Peninsula. Several tour companies offer day trips to the area to visit different beach sites , including Miriste and Zanjic.

Although Herceg Novi is not really the main beach town in the country, it still remains a popular destination for a vacation, not only for its spa facilities but also because there are other exciting things to do in the area.

Brands We Use And Trust

Places to see and things to do in herceg novi, mare fortress.

Things to do in Herceg Novi Montenegro - Aerial view of forte mare in herceg novi

The most famous tourist attraction in Herceg Novi is the Mare Fortress (locally known as Forte Mare). It was initially built by the 1st Bosnian king Tvrtko I, back in 1382. During the course of the years and according to who was ruling the country, it went under several transformations and reconstruction phases.

The fortress was originally a defensive position intended to protect the Herceg Novi from sea attacks. You can access the tower and discover the numerous passageways, ladders, and stairs in the beautiful stone complex during a visit.

Curious fact: The tower worked as a movie theatre back in the 1950s.

Old Town Herceg Novi Montenegro

The small old town of Herceg Novi can be easily visited in a short time. It is not as big as Kotor’s Old Town, but it can be equally charming or even more.

Since it is not as big or popular with tourists, it is not really overcrowded, making the walk along the alleys really pleasant and never rushed. Besides, prices are not really high, making it a pleasure to get your Montenegro souvenirs in the area. In general, the old town covers a relatively small area and can be visited in much less than an hour.

The whole area is mostly pedestrian, with winding cobblestoned alleys, picturesque courtyards, small squares, tons of blossomed flowers in summer, and quaint little shops.

After visiting this ancient part of town , make your way up the steep stairs uphill to pay a visit to Kanli Kula, a huge tower of Ottoman construction, today an amphitheater overlooking the bay.

Extra tip: Once you’ve seen the old town, follow the signs above the old town to visit Savina Monastery for other impressive views over the bay and the sea.

The massive tower that stands over the old town of Herceg Novi is Kanli Kula, a name meaning bloody tower. This building, which is closely connected with the town’s past, was built by the Turks back in 1539. The tower was expanded and repaired in 1687 by the Venetians, subsequently becoming a prison during the Ottoman occupation, when it got its sad name still used today.

If you’re interested in the history of this small country , then you will undoubtedly enjoy a visit. You will be able to check the dungeons and even look out for the etched writings into the walls made by the former prisoners kept in the tower and check a well-preserved water cistern made by the Venetians.

The tower was afterward restored to host an open-air amphitheater. It currently seats over 1000 spectators, and — especially in summer — it hosts cultural events and festivals , such as film and music festivals, and an important Montenegro Opera Festival known as the Operosa. There is a small fee (2 euro) to access the tower, which is worth it, especially for the impressive views from the top.

Pet Danica, The Promenade

The local walkway known as Pet Danica Walkway is a 6-km long path that stretches from Igalo, through Herceg Novi, and into nearby Meljine. It is not necessary to walk its whole length, but in any case, it offers plenty of interesting sights, especially along the shoreline, as well as a variety of stalls selling fruit bars, but also beach restaurants and cafés where to sit and enjoy the lovely atmosphere.

During the walk, you will encounter many signs with stairways directing toward the beach; however, venturing down, you will most probably find concrete slabs or other kinds of platforms by the sea for people to lay down and sunbathe.

To enjoy the best of the area without tons of people around, it is best to visit the promenade during the day , during the hours in which people would typically be elsewhere, like the beach. At night, this favorite walk is a must for locals; therefore, it tends to be super busy.

Tiny fishing village of Rose in the bay of Herceg Nov Montenegro

Rose is a small but charming fishing village located across the bay. Several boats can take you there starting from the Marina of Herceg Novi.

Rose is a whitewashed village with beautiful vines and exotic bougainvillea flowers, adding a pop of color along the alleys. Walking along the small town is an excellent way to relax and admire the tranquil vibe of the place. Enjoy the day by sitting in a small al fresco or reaching the nearby pebble beach at the end of the town. It is an excellent place for a refreshing swim and also to enjoy some snorkeling as the water is very clear.

And if you love adventures and thrilling day trips , the best way to visit is to hire a kayak, an excursion available on several places located along the Marina. You can either hire a kayak and discover the area on your own or join an organized kayak tour for all the family .

Curious fact: On your way to Rose, you can check a former submarine shelter or explore a fishing ship’s wrecks sitting along the bay.

Plava Spilja

Herceg Novi has a few exciting attractions; Plava Spilja is one of them. Translating as the Blue Cave , this beautiful natural formation is located on the Lustica Peninsula and needs to be visited by boat. The trip won’t only take you to check the cave but also part of the surrounding area.

To do so, it is possible to join a guided tour departing from Herceg Novi by booking in advance or walking down to the harbor to check out a private tour, or, as with Rose, you can choose a kayak & snorkeling tour instead. Since these visits tend to include several stops along the way, it is an exciting opportunity to check Fort Mamula and other sights along the Bay of Kotor, such as Zanjice Beach and Mamula Island.

Zanjice Beach and Mamula Island

Balkan Travel Blog_Best Balkan Islands_Mamula

The same boat trip mentioned above will also include these two stops when sailing to reach the Lustica Peninsula.

Get to Herceg Novi Marina early to make the most of the day. There are several boats at different hours, but catching one early will allow more time to explore and less crowded experiences. The round trip will take you to Zanjice Beach, again the Blue Cave , and Mamula Island, and it will sail back to Herceg Novi in the afternoon. With some boat companies, it is also possible to request a stop in Rose, which could be a good idea if your time in Herceg Novi is limited and you want to see the most of it in only one day.

Zanjice Beach is a fantastic beach area featuring several pebbled shores and incredibly clear waters. Most of the place offers good organization – there are loungers and umbrellas to rent and dozens of fish restaurants and cafeterias by the sea.

Mamula Island is a former fortress and concentration camp that, with time, transformed into a beautiful resort, exclusive and a bit expensive, but dotted with pleasant shores and beaches. When visiting in an organized tour, you don’t really have plenty of time to explore as stops don’t last more than thirty minutes, but you can ask for an extension of that visiting time if you¡re on a private tour.

The ticket for the boat, which includes a visit to Zanjice Beach, Blue Cave, and Mamula Island, costs 15 euro.

Where To Stay In Herceg Novi

Staying close to the main attractions is always a good idea as it makes it easy to explore the area and to join tours and day trips . It is also good because it keeps you close to essential shops, good restaurants, and entertainment.

These are some of the best hotels in town and nearby areas. They are divided into different budget categories, and all of them enjoy a convenient and safe location.

Remember also that it is always better to book in advance if you don’t want to miss an offer or a beautiful location. Booking in advance guarantees convenient fees and better rooms too!

A perfect Montenegro Holiday: The Travel Hack’s Guide to Herceg Novi

I’ve just returned from a Montenegro holiday and wow, just wow. I cannot believe how gorgeous Montenegro is but, mostly, I cannot believe what a little-known and underrated destination it is. While I was there I was based in Herceg Novi, a lovely coastal town close to the Croatian border and at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, so this is my guide to Herceg Novi. Enjoy and if you have any questions please do get in touch!

Guide to Herceg Novi

Montenegro is a tiny country on the Adriatic Sea next to Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Albania. If you don’t know much about Montenegro, it’s because the country declared independence in 2006 so it’s relatively new and, for British people at least, it’s relatively untravelled.

I highly recommend a holiday to Montenegro for these 10 reasons..

  • It’s beautiful
  • It’s easy to get to
  • It’s affordable (actually quite cheap!)
  • There’s loads to see and do
  • The weather is AMAZING
  • The beaches and sea are gorgeous
  • You get the ‘off the beaten path’ kind of feeling
  • Montenegro is small so you can see a lot in a short space of time
  • You could see a lot with a long weekend break
  • You’ll probably be the first of your friends to visit

Why visit Montenegro?

Montenegro isn’t exactly a hidden gem but it’s still an unusual place for a holiday for us Brits – and that’s why I think you should go now! The country is well established for tourism with great infrastructure, lots of hotels, lots to do and most people speak English. But Montenegro hasn’t quite hit the tourism heights of its popular neighbour, Croatia! So get in there quickly before everyone else discovers it!

When is the best time to take a Montenegro holiday?

Shoulder seasons are the best times to visit Montenegro as the country gets very, very busy in the peak summer months. In July and August it can be crowded and it is also very hot with temperatures regularly rising to 40 degrees C.

May, June, September and October are said to be the best months, with September being a particular favourite with locals. I was told that September is best because the sea is warm and the weather is perfect but the kids have gone back to school so it’s much quieter than August.

How to get to Montenegro

I’ve had lots of questions about how to get to Montenegro as it seems to be a common misconception that it’s a difficult country to reach. It’s not!

Most people reading this blog will fly. You could fly to one of two Montenegro airports, Podgorica Airport or Tivat Airport but it’s often cheaper and easier to fly into Dubrovnik Airport in the neighbouring country of Croatia.

Dubrovnik Airport has regular flights with budget airlines and then it’s a short drive to cross the border into Montenegro. The border crossing is simple but at busy times it can take up to an hour to cross. This isn’t really an issue because it isn’t difficult, you just need to sit in a queue of traffic, but it’s definitely good to know in advance, especially when you’re returning to the airport! You can take a taxi, a bus or hire a car to travel from Dubrovnik Airport to Montenegro. I recommend hiring a car but taxis are cheap in Montenegro so that’s a strong option too.

How to get around Montenegro

The best way to get around Montenegro is by hiring a car and driving yourself. You’ll have much more freedom and flexibility and you’ll be able to get off the beaten path and explore.

If hiring a car isn’t an option then I’d use a combination of taxis and tours. Taxis are cheap in Montenegro so they won’t be a huge expense and day tours will simplify your trip and help you to see a lot. You could also use public transport but it won’t be the easiest option.

My guide to Herceg Novi, Montenegro

While I was in Montenegro I was based in Herceg Novi so this guide and all my recommendations are based on this. I did explore a little further afield too, but most of what I did was in and around Herceg Novi.

Where to stay in Herceg Novi

I recommend staying in Herceg Novi while you’re in Montenegro. I have a whole post with 10 reasons to stay in Herceg Novi  so check that out first.

I stayed at Lazure Hotel which is luxurious and simply stunning! The location and the spa were huge highlights for me and I can’t recommend this hotel enough.

Lazure Hotel is a 5* boutique hotel in an 18th century Venetian stone building. The hotel overlooks the marina and was once the original quarantine building when sailors first arrived. And it’s just as beautiful from the inside as it is from the outside. It’s recently been refurbished and feels very stylish and modern inside but a lot of care and attention has gone into preserving the original features. It’s light and airy inside with a slick, minimal feel but the warmth of the stone and the plush furnishing ensure it doesn’t feel bare like a lot of minimal hotels.

Things to do in Herceg Novi

Here are some of the best things to see and do during your Montenegro holiday if you’re based in Herceg Novi and some of the highlights from my trip.

Tour around the Bay of Kotor

This is an absolute must and was one of the highlights from my trip. I wrote a full blog post about my Bay of Kotor day trip here.

Day trip sailing tour with Montenegro Outdoors

The second highlight for me was a sailing trip I took with Montenegro Outdoors . They picked me up from outside my hotel in a beautiful little sailing boat and took me to hidden coves, secret caves and little islands. We went inside the Blue Cave which was stunning as the sunlight dazzled off the bright blue water! We towed a kayak and a paddle board so I was able to get off the boat and explore the coastline by myself from a kayak. While I was paddling around the crystal clear water, they were preparing a delicious seafood feast. I climbed back on board to the smells of freshly cooked fish with fresh bread and a tasty salad! It was amazing and such a unique experience so I highly recommend doing this.

An afternoon tour of Savina Winery

Montenegro’s local winery has gorgeous views over the bay and they offer a lovely, sophisticated tasting session. You get a tour around the vineyards, get to taste some of their delicious wines and they also provide plenty of nibbles such as freshly baked bread, homegrown olives and homemade olive oil. It’s a really interesting tour but the highlight is really just sitting under the shade of the trees and enjoying that view while you sip your wine. Delightful!

Explore the Old Town

Of course, you can’t leave Herceg Novi without having a walk around the Old Town, which is simply stunning.

If you’re interested in the history of the city then I’d recommend a walking tour but, to be honest, it’s fairly small so you can see everything by yourself. Get lost within the town of 100,001 steps (yes, apparently there are that many!) enjoy the views from the forts, admire the churches and stop at one of the many coffee shops and bars and refuel.

Visit Herceg Novi’s forts

Herceg Novi has a lot of forts and I loved visiting them.

Kanli Kula (or the Bloody Tower) is the biggest and, despite it’s bloody history, it now had more of an outdoor theatre vibe. Yes, an outdoor theatre with a very dramatic setting! Check out what performances are going on during your visit and get your tickets early as the popular ones sell out quickly.

Forte Mare is unmissable as it’s on the promenade and close to a popular photo spot near the Herceg Novi sign and the monument of King Tvrtko I.

The Spanish Fortress is the least popular fortress to visit because it’s a little trickier to get to (you really need a car) but it’s well worth the journey if you’re feeling adventurous.

Day at the beach

If there’s one thing the locals pride themselves on, it’s their beaches! Most of the beaches around Herceg Novi are pebble beaches, which is dreamy for someone like me who hates getting covered in sand.

tourist information center herceg novi

Walk along the entire promenade

There’s a 12km promenade running along the shore of Herceg Novi. It was once a railway track but once the tracks were removed it was turned into a walking and cycling path. It makes a great place for a morning walk and is perfect for anyone staying at Lazure Hotel as it makes an easy way to walk to the Old Town from the hotel.

Herceg Novi Promenade

A visit to a traditional village

This is one of the more unusual things you can do in Montenegro. I loved my visit to Konoba Sikimic, a traditional old village where they show you how people have lived on the farm for hundreds of years. We had dinner there too and it was like stepping back in time.

tourist information center herceg novi

During my visit to Herceg Novi I was 5 months pregnant so didn’t do an awful lot of hiking. But next time I’ll definitely make sure I do because there are so many hiking paths and the area is really well set up for hikers. Here’s a good guide to the best hikes around Herceg Novi.

If you’ve got more time in Montenegro and plan to visit more than the area around Herceg Novi then I recommend checking out this Montenegro road trip itinerary from Dan Flying Solo.

Macca from An Adventurous World also has some practical blog posts from Montenegro and here’s another good guide from Chasing the Donkey.

You've definitely made me add Montenegro to my list!

Sunday 21st of July 2019

Montenegro is one of my favourite countries and I like Herceg Novi because it’s slightly less touristy than Kotor or Budva. I loved walking the promenade at sunset each night. Public transport is actually really easy and convenient in Montenegro - especially between the coastal towns. Buses are cheap and frequent and the bus stations in most towns are centrally located. I travelled a lot of the country on two separate trips, five years apart, only using buses and the train. Only one stretch proved tricky and that was between some of the mountain towns.

That's really good to know about the local transport. I had a local guy showing me around who I guess doesn't ever take public transport so it sounded a bit tricky but from what I've seen on YouTube it looks really easy!

Herceg Novi Travel Guide 2024

Located very close to the Croatian border, Herceg Novi is often overlooked by travelers visiting Montenegro for a short time. But if you are looking for a great destination to relax by the beautiful Adriatic Sea, then Herceg Novi might just be the place for you.

We visited this town during our recent trip to Montenegro, as part of a long Balkan road trip. As a result, we have put together this guide with all our best tips about  visiting Herceg Novi  so you can plan your trip too.

Best things to do and see in Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi was once known as one of the prime beach destinations in Montenegro but has lately lost its popularity among travelers. That’s not to say that the city is empty, far from that. During the summer, the beaches are still full of people working on their tan or spending the day by the water.

But going to the beach is not the only option of thing to do when in Herceg Novi. The city also has a lot to offer for those interested in  beautiful views and historical sites . Here is our short list of the best things to see and do in Herceg Novi:

1. Visit Herceg Novi’s Old Town

The Old Town of Herceg Novi, called “Stari Grad” in Montenegrin, is the most visited place in the city – and it is easy to understand why. The Old Town is the heart of the city. It is quite small and can easily be walked in a pair of hours.

Herceg Novi’s Old Town is officially considered to be  600 years old , but some of its constructions date back even earlier than that. The city was mentioned for the first time by the  Bosnian King Tvrtko I , who is considered to be Herceg Novi’s founder.

Over the years, Herceg Novi has had a very troubled history because it is located in such a strategic position, very close to the entrance of the Kotor Bay and what is now the border with Croatia. For that reason, Herceg Novi was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, the Spaniards, the Venetian Republic, Russia, France, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and, later, was part of Yugoslavia. This intense mix of cultures over the years can be seen in the architecture of the buildings and fortresses.

Herceg Novi’s Old Town is quite well preserved and with a couple of highlight locations you should check out:

  • Sahat Kula, the Clock Tower, built in 1667  – we recommend this to be your entry point into the city center
  • Church of Archangel Michael , located in the square of Herceg Stefan Vukic
  • The drinking fountain Karachi , located in the same square, heritage of the Turkish area
  • St Jerome Church and Square

2. Forte Mare, the main fortress in Herceg Novi

Forte Mare is located at the edge of the Old Town of Herceg Novi, towards Kotor Bay. This fort is one of the oldest constructions in the city, dating back to  1382 . Nowadays, the fortress holds concerts, open-air cinemas, and other events.

Entrance to the fortress costs  2 € .

After you check the fortress, make your way down to the waterfront to see the monument to King Tvrtko I.

3. Check out the open theatre in Kanli Kula

The upper part of Herceg Novi’s Old Town is marked by  Kanli Kula , another ancient fort. However, all that is left of it today is an  open-air theatre  that still functions as such.

Since it is located a bit higher than the rest of the center, Kanli Kula gives you beautiful views of Kotor Bay so it is worth the walk.

4. Go to the Savina Monastery

Located a bit further away from the Old Town, the Savina Monastery is always listed among the top things to see in Herceg Novi because it holds not one, not two, but  three beautiful Orthodox churches . Unfortunately, we couldn’t see this place during our trip, but we certainly wish we had so we made sure to include it on this list for you guys.

5. Go kayaking in submarine caves and an old shipwreck

One of the best things to do in Herceg Novi is to  explore the city from the water . You are just by the Adriatic Sea after all.

Hoping on a kayak-guided tour is an excellent way of seeing the city from this different perspective. You can get a tour by the waterfront, you will see a few operators offering them there if you visit during the summer.

The most traditional kayaking tour will take you to an old shipwreck where you can swim around and see a submarine cave from Yugoslavian times. The trip usually ends in Rose, a small fisherman’s village located right across the bay. It is a very interesting tour and definitely an activity I recommend if you will be spending some time in the city.

6. Boat tour to the Blue Cave

One of the best attractions in Kotor Bay is the speed boat tour to visit the Blue Cave. The same boat tour is offered from different points of the bay – you can purchase it from Herceg Novi, Kotor, Perast, or others.

The itinerary is mostly the same, having the Blue Cave as the final destination, but passing through the  Mamula Fort  and the  Yugoslavian submarine caves  along the way.

We did this boat tour departing from Kotor and highly recommend it. It was one of our favorite activities during this trip!  Read here our post about the Blue Cave boat trip .

7. Head to the beach around Herceg Novi

Last but not least, save yourself some time to  spend on the beach . You can either choose to go to one of the free areas on the beach or pay for a sunbed and umbrellas at one of the beach clubs.

See below our tips for the best beach spots in Herceg Novi.

best beaches in herceg novi

Best beaches near Herceg Novi city center

The coastline that goes from  Igalo to Meljine  is the best beach area in Herceg Novi. This promenade is called  Pet Danica,  with a walkway that is 6-7 km long.

During this part, you will find many options for beach bars and free areas to choose from. We recommend avoiding the middle part next to the city center, where the marina is. Further from that, either to the left or the right, you will find amazing beaches all around.

PS:  The beaches in this part around Pet Danica are not sandy beaches, they are made of concrete platforms or staircases that lead you into the water.

Another few beaches that are a bit further away from Herceg Novi’s city center but worth checking out are:

  • The mud beach  – apparently the mud on this beach has therapeutic properties and it is deemed by locals as a must-see in the area
  • Igalo Beach  – located at one of the extremities of Pet Danica, Igalo Beach is located very next to the former residence of Tito, the ex-president of Yugoslavia
  • Lalovina Beach  – Located more in the south, this beach gets sunshine until late in the evening and is considered one of the best beaches around Herceg Novi
  • Njivice Beach  – Good option for families as the water is shallow and appropriate for kids. There is a nudist beach located separately, called Sutorina Beach

How to get to Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is located only  10 km away from the Croatian border  and, for this reason, it is considered a popular day trip from Dubrovnik. However, you can also get to the city from other destinations in Montenegro.

The best way to travel to Herceg Novi is by car, which will be the fastest option. We recommend renting a car if you won’t be traveling with your own vehicle. Check the  rental car options here .

Here is how long it would take to get to Herceg Novi by car from different cities:

  • Dubrovnik – Herceg Novi : 50km, approximately 1h (count some time for crossing the international border)
  • Podgorica – Herceg Novi : 143 km, approx 2h 30m
  • Tivat – Herceg Novi : 21 km, approx. 1h (with a ferry)
  • Kotor – Herceg Novi : 43 km, approx. 1h

Note:  There are also ferry options if you will be coming from destinations that are connected by sea, such as Dubrovnik.

What is the best airport to fly to when visiting Herceg Novi?

Montenegro has two main airports:  Podgorica and Tivat . The closest option is the Tivat Airport, but it is significantly smaller, so it is sometimes harder to find good flights.

Most tourists coming into the country from abroad fly to Podgorica airport instead. From there, you can rent a car, get a bus, or transfer to Herceg Novi.

Where to stay in Herceg Novi?

We only recommend staying in Herceg Novi if you want to spend some time enjoying the beaches around the city. Otherwise, it is perfectly doable to visit Herceg Novi and explore its city center during a day trip and have your accommodation based in Kotor, for instance.

However, if you wish to stay in Herceg Novi, we have gathered some interesting accommodation options for you:

  • Apartments Bane  – This accommodation is located only 80 meters from the beach and, amongst other perks, offers private parking. It is one of the best-rated properties on Booking right now.
  • Apartments Mako  – This apartment is even closer to the water, only 50 meters away from the closest beach. It offers nice apartments that are air-conditioned and have balconies with sea views.

Accommodation options in Kotor

If you would rather stay in Kotor, which is our main recommendation, here are some of the best options for places to stay:

  • Promenade Rose  – This was the place we stayed in Dobrota, the promenade next to Kotor, and we can’t recommend it highly enough. The apartment had the most amazing view of the bay, had free parking on site, was very organized, and had a great price. All in all, an amazing deal.
  • Apartmani Max im – This property has it all, from a children’s playground to free bikes and a private beach area. It’s also one of the best-rated properties on Booking, so are confident about adding it to our list.
