Hanseatic Harbour and fish market

Where ships used to be unloaded, today you can find shops, cosy pubs, and cafés with inviting summer terraces by the water.  Its Hanseatic heritage  remains present in the flourishing half-timbered town until today. The museum in the restored Swedish warehouse gives a vivid picture of the town’s development with an impressive Hanseatic exhibition. You can feel the maritime charm everywhere: the Hanseatic harbour (13th century) in the heart of the city, the town harbour with the museum ship “Greundiek“, and the leisure crafts demonstrate that Stade continues to maintain its traditional ties to shipping. A multitude of maritime passtimes, like several boat trips on the rivers Schwinge and Elbe and sporting activities on and near the river, invite you to discover the town from the water and guided tours take visitors through the history of the city. Several festivals like the Craft Beer & Gourmet Festival, music festivals like the Shantychoir-Festival and MAMF-festival, events during the year, and a very special christmas market are worth visiting.

Fish market and wooden crane

Hanseatic Harbour and fish market with a wooden crane

The Hanseatic Harbour is considered to be the oldest harbour installation on the lower river Elbe and a nationally significant cultural monument. The dock was built as early as the 13th century. During the Hanseatic era, the harbour was the trade centre for goods from all over Europe. Today, culinary experiences have taken over the area and restaurants host their guests by the harbour. The wooden treadwheel crane reminds visitors of the Hanseatic era.

Swedish Warehouse Museum

The Swedish Warehouse Museum

The Swedish warehouse at the Hanseatic harbour is equally as historic as the exhibits behind its old walls. The Swedes originally built the victual storehouse in 1692 for their garrison. Today, the warehouse hosts a prizewinning exhibition about Stade’s prehistory and early history as well as its municipal and regional history. An exciting journey through time that should not be missed.

Hanseatic guided tour

Guided Tour “On the trails of the Hansa“

During the enacted guided city tour “On the trails of the Hansa“, participants immerse themselves in around 350 years of Stade’s town history just as if they had travelled back in time. On the tour, eight different personalities, from merchants to bathing attendants, await the guests in historical dress to reveal a piece of their lives during the Hanseatic era.

Cosmae Church tower

St. Cosmae Church

Stade’s landmark was built in the 13th century as a late-Romanesque single-nave church – it burned out during the town fire in 1659. Its trademark is the stately octagonal crossing tower. From the bell tower, visitors can oversee the entire city. Inside St. Cosmae stands an Arp Schnitger organ. Some of the concerts during the Hansa Song Festival are held here.

Travel options

Stade is located along the motorway A26, or alternatively the state road B73 from Hamburg to Cuxhaven. The city is easily reached via the A7 or A1 from Hamburg or Bremen. Stade is attached to the public transport network of the Hamburg Transportation Authority (HVV) and is well-connected by rail. With the Wattenfährlinien (Wadden ferry lines), there is even connection by boat from Hamburg to Stade crossing the river Elbe.

A brief tour of the city reveals that the wonderfully restored Old Town is still buzzing today. Lots of small boutiques make Stade the perfect place for a shopping trip. Specialist shops, cosy pubs and cafés with welcoming summer terraces by the waterside now stand where ships were once unloaded and goods weighed, cleared through customs and stored before continuing on their journey.

The Hanseatic harbour in the heart of the popular Old Town with the “Willi” sailing barge or the nearby town harbour with the “Greundiek” museum ship and its berth for leisure crafts show that Stade continues to maintain its traditional ties to water and shipping. One of the city’s most beautiful spots has to be the fish market with its reconstructed wooden crane, which is surrounded by the quay walls and glorious half-timbered houses.

Stade — Ancient Maritime Town With Historical Sights

The city of Stade in Lower Saxony is a friendly place that welcomes you with a variety of activities that will entertain and educate.

It was first mentioned in writings dated 994, which means that the city is more than 1,000 years old. Its location on the Elbe River made it an important maritime center.

If you visit there today, you will want to see several historic sites and enjoy many types of cultural events. Water has always played an important part in the commerce of Stade, and a walking tour of the harbor area is a great way to spend an afternoon. You will be able to see a number of beautifully preserved 17th century houses and a reconstructed fish market.

The town hall and the arsenal in the Pferdemarkt are remnants of an era in the late 1600’s when the city was under Swedish rule. Many of the fortifications from that period are still standing and signposts standing at intervals make a pleasant place for tourists to walk and learn.

Any visitor who has an interest in architectural styles will find a lot to see in town. There are several structures dating back to Gothic times, including the vaults in the cellar of the Town Hall and the altar in St. Cosmae’s Church. Examples of the Renaissance and Baroque periods can both be found at the Bürgermeister Hintze House. Classicism and Art Nouveau are also represented in the residences and businesses of the town.

There are at least nine museums in Stade that have exhibits of all kinds. You will find historical displays and artwork in the Swedish Warehouse. This impressive brick building rises out of the water of the harbor on wooden stilts and has archeological displays, artwork, and more. The Open Air Museum on the Island is an area surrounded by an ancient moat, which contains a reconstructed farmhouse, a 17th century windmill and other interesting structures.

The ship Greundiek has been dedicated as a monument and is open to visitors in the harbor area. There is also a museum of Technology and Transportation that explores the ways in which the Industrial Revolution changed the lives of the local people.

If you are interested in a bicycle tour, Stade is an excellent starting point for tours both long and short. You can ride along the Elbe River, tour beautiful dairy farms, or see the North Sea Coast. There are many interesting day and half-day trips as well.

The most beautiful Sights in the Hanseatic City of Stade

Stade is a small town in Lower Saxony and is located on the Elbe in the catchment area of Hamburg. Due to its earlier membership of the Hanseatic League, Stade has the title of a German Hanseatic city. In the Middle Ages, the city was an important trading point on the Elbe. Today the historic port is the landmark of the city. It is located in the middle of the old town on the Schwinge that flows through the city and then into the Elbe. The architecture along the harbor is reminiscent of the influence of the Swedes who controlled Stade in the 17th century. But other landmarks of the city are also shaped by this time. These structures make Stade a popular travel destination in the Hamburg region. But how do I get to Stade of all places? Well, I lived in this town once. That’s why I would like to show you a few impressions from my time in Stade in this blog post. Because, although it mainly attracts older people, the Hanseatic city definitely has something to offer for the younger generation as well. In addition to the buildings mentioned, there is a beach and the largest apple-growing area in Germany. Water sports on the Schwinge are also popular. I’m glad you found my travel blog and hope you enjoy reading my travelogue about this German town.

Overview of the sights in Stade

The best known is the old harbor in Stade. Beautiful buildings are lined up here side by side and conjure up a wonderful backdrop in the middle of the old town. The city center is generally characterized by ancient half-timbered houses and historical buildings. You will also find the Schwedenspeicher at the harbor, which used to be a provision store and is now a museum. To the east of it is the city harbor, where you can relax and unwind. Via the Salztor you can reach a boat rental located at the castle moat. Here you can rent a canoe or SUP board and explore the idyllic Schwinge. The moat leads you to Museum Island, on which there are buildings from the time of the Swedish rule. Outside of Stade, the Barger Heide awaits you, a secret spot where you can enjoy the beauty of nature in the midst of heathland. A sandy beach, lighthouses and impressive cargo ships await you on the Elbe. In this area you can also visit the countless apple orchards of the German Altes Land. You see, there are a lot of attractions and travel destinations in the Hanseatic city of Stade.

How to get to Stade in Germany

Getting to stade by car.

Stade can be easily reached by car via Bundesstraße 73 or German Autobahn 26. You can find parking spaces at the city harbor or in four different parking garages in the old town. I have also marked these on the map.

Getting to Stade by train

But traveling by train is also attractive. From Hamburg there is an hourly regional train to Stade, which continues to commute to Cuxhaven. S-Bahn trains also run into the city. The trips are inexpensive because Stade is part of the Hamburg transport network. You can find timetables and tickets on the HVV or Deutsche Bahn website.

There is also a Flixbus stop in Stade, which commutes between Hamburg and Cuxhaven. I myself have often used the Flixbus service* and have always been satisfied.

Hotels and accommodation in Stade

The Hanseatic city offers a variety of hotels, holiday homes and guest houses. Most of the hotels are located in the city center, directly in the old town and guarantee short distances and a great atmosphere. Outside of Stade, especially on the Elbe Cycle Path, there are countless guest houses and family-run accommodations that guarantee a wonderful view of the Elbe. In Stade you are sure to find accommodation that meets your needs.

The historic port and the German old town of Stade

The old Hanseatic port is a historic inland port on the Schwinge. It was built in the 11th century and was an important trading point in northern Germany at that time. The port also served as a strategic point of transition across the Elbe to connect important long-distance trade routes. Moreover, Scandinavian pilgrims used Stade due to its location as an important stopover on their journey to the great pilgrimage destinations in the south. Today, however, the historic port is separated from the navigable water by a weir and is no longer of economic importance as it used to be. But culturally even more because tourists appreciate the history and the picturesque backdrop of this sight. Magnificent buildings from the 15th and 17th centuries adorn the streets along the harbor. For example, the Bürgermeister-Hintze-Haus with its Renaissance facade or the Goeben House. In the south of the habor there is a reconstructed wooden crane that was used to load and unload ships in the Middle Ages. However, no ships have dock here for a long time. Gastronomic establishments are lined up along the quay walls, where you can enjoy the picturesque atmosphere of the harbor, especially in summer. Countless bars, cafes and restaurants offer something for every taste.

The Schwedenspeicher at the habor of Stade

At the end of the harbor is the baroque Schwedenspeicher, which was built by the Swedes in the 17th century. After the end of the Thirty Years War, Stade and other cities went into Swedish hands as war compensation. The Swedes wanted to turn Stade into a fortress and therefore needed huge amounts of food for the troops. That is why they built this huge supply store. Today the warehouse contains a museum with exhibitions on the Hanseatic League and the history of Stade. An absolute highlight in Stade. You can find more information on the museum’s website.

A walk through the old town of Stade

The historic buildings are not only located at the old Hanseatic harbor, but also run through the entire old town of Stade. For example, ancient half-timbered houses are lined up on Bungenstrasse and Bäckerstrasse and are worth seeing. At the Pferdemarkt is the magnificent Zeughaus, which was used by the Swedes as an arsenal. It was later used as a market hall, theater, and cinema. Today there is an Irish pub in the building. There are also two churches in the old town: the Cosmae Church and St. Wilhadi. Tourists can tour the churches and marvel at the gigantic organs inside. It is also possible to climb the steeple of the Cosmae Church, from which you have a fabulous view over the area. Two thirds of all buildings were destroyed in a major fire in the 17th century. Including the old town hall, which was rebuilt in 1667 on the preserved vault. If you want to find out more about the history of Stade, you can take part in a city tour. You can find all the offers on the tourist information website.

Stade’s city harbor and a trip on the Schwinge

Not far from the old port is the next sight of Stade: the city port. There is a parking lot and a listed crane on the site. However, this is no longer in operation, but only functions as a prop. Together with the museum ship Greundiek, it creates an authentic maritime atmosphere. A food truck also offers Fischbrötchen (fish in bread) and other specialties that you can enjoy while relaxing on the quay walls. Here you have a great view of the adjacent ships and you can follow the song of the seagulls. On the other side of the harbor there are more seating options. However, the Schwinge is tidal water, so that the water level drops enormously at low tide.

Museum ship at city harbor

Canoe adventure on the Schwinge

The port is connected to the moat of Stade via a weir. The Holzhafen, where the so-called Fleetkähne leave, awaits you here. These boats will carry you along the moat while the captain tells you about the history of the ports and shipping. You can find information about this attraction on the tourist information website . If you are looking for a little more adventure, you should visit the neighboring beach club. Here you can rent a canoe or a SUP board and explore the Schwinge on your own. You can find prices and information about the boat rental on the SUP club’s website. I’ve marked the jetty on the map.

Short Facts for your Trip

I recommend visiting Stade between late April and early May. The countless apple orchards in the Altes Land region are in bloom at this time. However, the Hanseatic city is also very worth seeing at all other times of the year. In summer, the Barger Heide and the beach on the Elbe are particularly attractive. Stade lies in the cool temperate zone. You can find a climate table on the following page.

The Hanseatic city of Stade can be visited within a day. But if you want to see the apple orchards, the beach, or other sights in the area, I recommend planning more than a day. There is a lot to discover in this region of Germany.

Since I lived in Stade myself, I was never dependent on accommodation. But there are several hotels and many holiday apartments in the city. On the following website you will find a good selection of accommodations*

The best way to explore Stade is on foot. All sights within the city are within walking distance. To visit the surroundings, I recommend a bike that you can also rent in Stade. But buses also go to some destinations. You can find timetables on the website of the transport association or Deutsche Bahn.

The right equipment depends on when you come to Stade and what you want to see. However, you should think of a rain jacket at any time of the year.

For the narrow streets and historic buildings, I recommend packing a wide-angle lens. Outside of Stade, extensive, flat landscapes are waiting for you. A telephoto lens is ideal here. On the beach, for example, you can take wonderful pictures of the huge container ships.

Culture in Germany – The open-air museum on the island

On the southwestern edge of the old town lies an island that is completely enclosed by the Schwinge. It is mostly just called the island and contains a publicly accessible open-air museum. The island was created when the Swedes expanded the fortification of Stade. At that time, a wall shield was built here, which was supposed to protect the walls between two bulwarks. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was decided to build a museum on the unused space. Since then, you can visit an Altländer farmhouse, a Geest farmhouse and a post mill on the island. All the buildings in the area were bought in northern Germany, dismantled, and put back up in Stade. Today they blend harmoniously into the cityscape and offer visitors a special atmosphere. While the island is always freely accessible, visiting the farmhouses is only possible between May and September. There is also an island market here twice a year. I have marked the idyllic attraction of Stade on the map , which you can reach via two wooden bridges. You can find more information on the museum’s website. I took my pictures in spring.

open air museum on an island

The Barger Heath – the pure nature experience outside Stade

To the southwest of Stade, the Schwinge meanders through a flat, spacious landscape. This so-called Schwingetal borders on a 40-hectare nature reserve near Groß Thun, which is known as Barger Heath. The last ice age left stones and sand in the region, which were blown up by the wind to form dunes. The result was a hilly landscape with diverse flora. In addition to the heather plants, there are more than 100 other flowering plants here. However, the edge areas are characterized by conifers. Nowadays, the Barger Heide serves the residents as a local recreation area and is a secret spot. Sandy paths lead you along a picturesque heathland. Heidschnucken graze on the meadows and thus preserve the heather. Especially at sunrise or sunset, the full beauty of nature is revealed here. A perfect travel destination for a walk in the fresh air. Since the heather only fully blooms in summer, I recommend visiting in August. The best way to get to Barger Heide is by bike or car. A bus will only take you to the Fredenbecker Weg stop, from which it is a 15-minute walk. The locations are marked on the map. My pictures were taken at sunrise in early September. For me the most beautiful nature experience in Stade.

The sand is white, and the view is wide. In the distance is the decommissioned nuclear power plant. Water sports enthusiasts romp on the water, ships cross the Elbe. With a bit of luck, you can marvel at huge container ships that travel to Hamburg or distant countries. You can find a ship radar on this website. I often went for a walk on the beach or the dike or watched the goings-on on the Elbe. Because mostly it is quiet and empty in this area. In summer, however, the beach is well attended, although swimming is not recommended due to the strong current. In addition, there are no sanitary facilities or shops here. You can find this a good kilometer further at Twielefleth. There is also a beautiful lighthouse. If you love sand and water, you shouldn’t miss the Elbe beach near Bassenfleth.

To Europe And Beyond

Is Stade the prettiest village on Germany’s framework road?

I had only vaguely heard of the Hanseatic League before I got to Stade as part of my itinerary along the German Half-Timbered Houses Route . Indeed, this impossibly quaint city, located in Lower Saxony near the North Sea, was a prominent member of the commercial confederation back in the medieval times.

And while it was later on eclipsed by Hamburg, Stade remained nonetheless a powerful seaport along the River Elbe.

This former prominent status can only mean two things for the contemporary visitor: 1, Stade was significant enough to become an administrative centre, and 2, various trades made it rich enough to build splendid and ornate buildings.

To say I was impressed to start my German Timber-Frame road trip in Stade would not be anywhere close to my actual level of excitement.

Visiting Stade for the first time

stade germany

As entertaining as my guide was, I had a hard time peeling myself away from the beautiful hanse-harbour pictured above. I knew there were other parts of Stade that I wanted to see, but it was the canal and the historic wooden crate that really drew me in.

This is what I came to Germany for; these are the romantic, fascinating, physics-defying houses that I had longed for. Once I managed to take my eyes off this incredibly beautiful row I quickly realised that indeed, Stade has more than one trick up its sleeve.

While the most picturesque buildings are of course located on the waterfront, the entire town oozes the same old-world charm – with the main difference that once you dare venture in the winding alleyways, there is no one there but you, your camera and these imposing beauties.

Don’t mind if I do.

stade germany

The first human settlers came to the Stade area in 30,000 BC, but the first official mention of the city dates back from 994. It wasn’t long before its strategic location, on the Elbe River, transformed the small hammock into a major maritime centre. But such a valuable land could never be safe from jealous intruders… therefore, Stade went from German to Danish to Sweden rule several times – in fact, one of the town’s most visited attractions is the Swedish Warehouse, which was recently turned into a museum.

Stade has been a Hanseatic town ever since the commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds came to be in the 14th century. Not only that – it was one of the most important trading centres of the North for several centuries, which partly explains why the town boasts so many opulent properties.

stade germany

Day tripping to Altes Land

Little did I know upon leaving Stade that I would be headed to the biggest contiguous fruit-producing region in Central Europe, which extends over 143 square kilometres The Altes Land – although it means “old country” in German, it refers to the times where the region was colonised by Dutch settlers –  isn’t just made of boring agricultural lands; far from it, in fact, as it is home to splendid orchards and historic farmhouses.

stade germany

My tour guide, Frank, was really excited to show me around the area since the apple and cherry trees were in full bloom. Seeing as I had gotten back from Japan a few weeks prior I didn’t expect much as far as blooming trees go ( how much better could it get , I thought) but I was positively floored by the beauty and tranquility of the area.

Also, there weren’t huge crowds of fast-paced Japanese families pushing me around for photo opps, so that was a huge bonus :-)

And trust me when I say that the North American farmhouses I am used to have nothing on the half-timbered ones I saw in Altes Land – after all, I was on the national Half-Timbered Houses route!

stade germany

The region is famous for its  Marschhufendörfer , a unique type of village where the farmyards are typically located just a few meters off the main street, with the land directly behind them. Referred to as  Fachhallenhaus in German, these houses are normally covered by a thatched roof and famous for their richly-decorated façades and elaborate gateways – of course, the more ornate, the wealthier the family. Decorative carvings and mottos were usually found as inscriptions over the entranceway, whereas the lintel gave the name of the builder, the year the house was built and a saying that best represented the families’ values.

It amazed me to see how much you can tell about the history of a house by just one glance!

Visiting Stade in Germany and Altes Land: good to know

  • Stade is located just an hour north-west of Hamburg and can be reached by car and train.
  • The Altes Land is just a few minutes outside Stade, and can be visited by car. However, I suggest you opt for a bike tour if you’re an avid cyclist.
  • Places you shouldn’t miss in Stade: the Swedish Warehouse, the Church of Saint Cosmae, the wooden crane and the Hansa Harbour, wander the streets of Old Stade.

Tourist info

Our hotel is centrally located between old and new town at the burggraben, tourist information, stade's sights.

The old town of Stade is a true gem in northern Germany and offers a wealth of sights and activities. The city harbor is one of the highlights, which has existed since the Middle Ages and impresses with its historic half-timbered buildings. The fish market , located at the end of the city harbor, is a popular and lively meeting place with many cafes, restaurants and bars. Another highlight is the Stade wooden crane , which was designed on the model of the Lüneburg Old Crane and serves as a replacement for the old Stade salt crane from 1661. Although it is no longer functional today, it is a reminder of the old days and makes for an interesting photo opportunity. The architecture in the old town of Stade is impressive. There are many medieval half-timbered houses and narrow streets that invite you to take a walk. In the old town you will also find various small boutiques and stores where you can buy souvenirs and mementos of your visit to Stade. It is a place full of history, culture and beauty.

Impressive churches

Stade’s historic churches are of great interest both architecturally and culturally. One of the most famous churches is St. Cosmae Church , a Gothic church from the 14th century. It impresses with its murals and a magnificent altar. The church is also known for its impressive acoustics and is often used for concerts. Another important church in Stade is St. Wilhadi Church , built in the 12th century. It is the oldest church in the city and houses a collection of medieval tombstones and an organ from the 17th century. Also of interest is St. Peter’s Church , which has a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It houses an impressive collection of stained glass windows and an 18th century organ. Overall, Stade offers a wide range of historic churches. They are an important part of the city’s history – a visit is worthwhile in any case.

Culture & Museums

Stade has a rich culture, which is reflected in its numerous museums and art galleries. One of the most famous museums is the Swedish Warehouse , a former 17th century warehouse that now serves as a museum of the history of the city and the region. It also hosts regularly changing exhibitions on various themes. The Kunsthaus Stade is another highlight for those interested in culture. It houses an impressive collection of artworks, including paintings, sculptures and photographs, as well as interesting exhibitions. A special experience is offered by the open-air museum on the island , an open-air museum that shows the history and culture of the marshlands of the Alte Land. It houses authentic buildings from the region, including farmhouses, barns and a church, which were moved here from their original location. Visitors can experience the history and life of the marsh inhabitants of past centuries up close. In the surroundings of Stade there is Agathenburg Castle , a Renaissance castle built in the 16th century. Today it houses an exhibition on the history of the castle and the surrounding area. The castle and its surroundings also offer a beautiful park for walking and relaxing.

Environment

The surroundings of Stade offer many opportunities for exciting excursions and activities. One of the biggest attractions is the Old Country , known for its orchards and historic villages. A popular activity is a boat tour of the Alte Land, where you can enjoy the beauty of the landscape and the rich culture of the region. For nature lovers, the surroundings of Stade also offer many opportunities for hiking and biking. There are many well-marked cycling and hiking trails that lead through the marshlands and along the Elbe River. A particularly beautiful route is the Elbe Cycle Path , which leads through the Alte Land and the numerous fruit trees.

For a day trip it is worth going to Hamburg. Hamburg offers a variety of attractions, including the historic Speicherstadt, the Binnenalster and the famous Reeperbahn. There are also many museums, theaters and concerts in Hamburg. Somewhat smaller, but equally worth seeing, is the city of Lüneburg , a historic city known for its medieval buildings and salt production. Here, too, there is much to discover.

Maritime world

Whether you want to sail on the water, paddle or simply admire the beauty of nature, life in Stade is characterized by its location on the water and offers numerous opportunities to enjoy the sea and waterways. A highlight for sailors are the four nearby marinas , which offer an ideal starting point for sailing trips on the Elbe and in the North Sea. The waterways of the Schwinge and the Alte Land also offer a variety of ways to experience the beauty of the region. A special experience is a Tidenkieker trip through the Schwinge or take a tour on one of the Fleet barges that make the region a special experience. Another highlight is a gondola ride with an original Venetian gondola through the moat of Stade. A canoe trip with picnic in the Alte Land is particularly suitable as a family excursion. Alternatively, you can rent a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddle board and explore the waterways yourself.

Rugby : pourquoi le Stade Toulousain devrait remporter la finale de la Champions Cup contre le Leinster

Source : JT 20h WE

31% - Jack Willis has won a turnover or slowed down the ruck at 31% of the defensive rucks he's hit in club rugby this season, the best rate of any T14, Prem or URC player, while Will Evans has won the most jackal turnovers per 80 minutes in 2023/24. Battle. pic.twitter.com/ozriUTokJJ — OptaJonny (@OptaJonny) May 3, 2024

Four arrested in Glendale believed to be part of ‘burglary tourism’ ring

Glendale police arrested a group of Colombian nationals this week who are suspected of being part of a South American “burglary tourism” ring operating in Los Angeles County.

The four men were pulled over during a traffic stop Monday evening in the Emerald Isle neighborhood shortly after 10:30 p.m., the Glendale Police Department announced in a news release .

The men were i driving out of a cul-de-sac with their car’s headlights off when officers stopped them and searched their vehicle, police said. Officers found a video surveillance device with a portable battery charging pack camouflaged with leaves in a Whole Foods bag. They also found a planter on the street, which detectives believe was where the surveillance device was located.

By placing the device near a home and retrieving it later, the suspects could in theory learn the schedule of when a person leaves their home, according to police.

Also inside the suspects’ car, officers found several jewelry boxes, along with a construction hard hat and a vest, which could be used to get near a home without drawing attention, police said.

The four men were identified as Bryan Martinez Vargas, 28; Jose Antonio Velasquez, 28; Edison Arley Pinzon Fandino, 27; and Luis Carlos Moreno, 29, according to police. The men were arrested and accused of conspiracy to commit burglary.

This was not the first time police had encountered Martinez Vargas.

4 Chileans stole from homes across L.A. in a case of ‘burglary tourism,’ police say

A Chilean burglary crew was apprehended in Pacific Palisades, police say. The three men and one teen came to the U.S. on tourist visas, according to authorities.

March 8, 2024

On April 30, a police officers with a burglary task force responded to a residential burglary call in the Crescenta Highlands neighborhood. During the call, police were involved in a high-speed pursuit with the suspects, who eventually drove their car off the shoulder of a freeway exit, according to camera footage from a police vehicle involved in the pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspects in the car tried to get rid of stolen items and a device used to interrupt the Wi-Fi signals used with home security systems, according to police.

Martinez Vargas and 45-year-old William Guanume were in the car and taken into custody. It’s unclear what charges the men faced over that incident.

Police say that Martinez Vargas and others suspected in the Glendale heist are believed to be part of a “burglary tourism” ring.

Glendale Police Chief Manny Cid called the situation “frustrating” in a statement, considering that Martinez Vargas had been arrested just weeks after his previous arrest.

Glendale is not unique in being targeted by a group of foreign nationals believed to have entered the U.S. under the guise of tourists, but who instead are burgling high-end residential neighborhoods.

Increasingly over the last five years , police officials say, thieves from South American nations are taking advantage of the tourist visa system, which does not require a background check for travelers. Once in the country, police say, they plan heists and fence the loot before dispatching their earnings back home.

The groups mostly hit wealthy neighborhoods where homes have jewelry and high-value items that can be easily exchanged for cash, police said.

Los Angeles police arrested a 17-year-old fugitive and three others from Chile earlier this year while they were scoping out homes in Pacific Palisades .

Former U.S. President Trump's criminal trial on charges of falsifying business records continues in New York

Trump hush money trial: What comes next?

Closing arguments are expected on Tuesday in Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial in New York, wrapping up what is likely to be the only case against the former U.S. president to reach a jury before the November election.

Gunman Kills Three Spanish Tourists in Central Afghanistan

One Afghan was also injured in the attack, which many expect will hinder the government’s recent efforts to lure foreign visitors.

A rugged landscape under a starry sky.

Yaqoob Akbary reported from Kabul, Afghanistan, and Christina Goldbaum from London.

Three Spanish tourists and one Afghan were killed by a gunman in central Afghanistan on Friday, Taliban officials said, in the first fatal attack on tourists in the country since the Taliban seized power in 2021.

Four other foreigners and three Afghans were also injured in the shooting in Bamiyan Province, a serene stretch of valleys, lakes and ancient relics northwest of the capital, Kabul.

The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m., when at least one gunman opened fire on the group of tourists as they left a bazaar in the capital of the province, eyewitnesses said. Safiullah Rayed, the director of information for Bamiyan Province, said the dead were Spanish nationals.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack, officials said. No group has claimed responsibility.

The government “strongly condemns this accident, expresses its deep feelings to the families of the victims and assures that all the criminals will be found and punished,” Abdul Mateen Qani, the spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said on X .

The attack comes as Taliban authorities have tried to lure foreign tourists to Afghanistan in the hopes of bolstering the country’s economy and revamping the government’s image on the international stage. Western officials have slammed the Taliban’s restrictions on women and, nearly three years since the Taliban seized power, no country officially recognizes its government.

Last month, Taliban officials opened a government-supported tourism and hospitality institute to build up the country’s tourism infrastructure. They have also tried to assure tourism agencies that the country is safe for foreigners, despite the persistent threat from the Islamic State affiliate in the region, which has carried out sporadic attacks in Afghanistan in recent years and sought to destabilize the government.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Afghanistan was part of the overland so-called “Hippy Trail” across Asia. Foreigners were drawn to the country’s rich natural landscapes, centuries-old mosques and ancient relics. Bamiyan, where the shooting on Friday took place, is home to the remnants of 1,500-year-old giant Buddhas that were carved into the side of a cliff and that the Taliban mostly destroyed in 2001 under their first government. The province also boasts the country’s first national park, Band-e-Amir, a sprawling swath of rugged mountains and deep blue lakes.

Tourism in Afghanistan dwindled after the Soviet invasion in 1979 and the violent decades that followed. But after the U.S.-led war ended in 2021 and relative calm returned to the country, so too did some foreign tourists.

In 2021, nearly 700 foreign tourists visited the country, according to the Taliban’s Tourism Directorate in Kabul. That figure rose to around 2,300 in 2022 and reached around 7,000 last year.

The fatal attack on Friday will likely be a setback to the government’s tourism efforts. “This incident may scare other tourists who want to come to Afghanistan,” said Mohammad Saeed, the head of the Tourism Directorate in Kabul.
