Lampung is served by Radin Inten II Airport ( TKG  IATA ) about 20 km north of the provincial capital Bandar Lampung. There are regular flights from Jakarta (both Soekarno-Hatta and Halim airports), and flights from a range of other Indonesian cities including Bandung , Medan , Palembang , and Batam .

Lampung is the southern terminus of the three (i.e. the Western, Central, and Eastern) Trans-Sumatran Highways The main road into the region is the Eastern Trans-Sumatran Highway (also known as Asian Highway AH25, although this is not signposted), which provides connections from cities such as Palembang , Jambi , and Pekanbaru . Keep in mind that road conditions are variable, and especially in the rainy season suboptimal.

There is a highly frequent ferry connection from Merak on the island of Java to Bakauheni in the southeast of Lampung.

Surfing at Karang Nyimbor, Tanjung Setia, are highly recommended.

Some local specialities are:

• Seruit is grilled freshwater fish with special spicy sour sauce made of fresh small chilli, baked shallot, shrim-paste, with sour taste taken from either 'blimbing wuluh' or 'rampai' with sparkles of citrus juice, serves with fresh salad or boiled cassava leaves or boiled eggplants. You can find this speciality at Rumah Warung restaurant in Kawasan Sentra Industri Keripik (banana chips industry area) Kedaton, Bandar Lampung
• Pindang Lampung is made from either seawater fish (Kembung or Baung) or fresh water fish (gold fish or Patin) with tasty sour soup, served with fresh cucumber and kemangi, you can find as well in Rumah Warung, for info call +62 721 9011173
• Tempoyak is preserved durian to make sambal, just add spice and stirfry or cook with other dish, smells delicious, tasty duriant
• Kopi Lampung is special home made arabica coffee
• Kripik Pisang - crunchy fried banana chips available natural, or adulterated with chocolate, cheese, strawberry, milk or a range of other flavours.
• Kripik Raja Ikan - fish flavoured crispy fried crackers.
• Sambal Lampung - even by Indonesian standards this sambal (spicy sauce) is fierce and fiery. Look for it freshly made at roadside vendors, or in bottled form at food stores.
• Mie Kodon - a wheat based noodle served in a huge variety of ways, often with Sambal Lampung. Could be fried or in a soup format.

Accommodation in the relatively undeveloped, remote regions of Lampung Province, is very basic and few people are fluent in English. Bandar Lampung has many hotel in the city with a wide range of budgets.

  LAMPUNG: HOME TO INDONESIA’S SUBCULTURE AND OPEN VISTAS

Once upon a time, somewhere on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, there lies a culture so unique and so distinct, they are practically a stranger to much of the people of the archipelago. Not only do they speak their own language, but they also have developed their own writing which sets them apart from their fellow inhabitants from neighboring islands—the aboriginal Lampungese.

For some time, the Lampungese had been enjoying a way of lifestyle that is separate from their fellow countryman but which soon faded over time resulting from the saturation of other cultures.

Due to the mass migration program set by the government meant to offload the rest of the country’s population to the lesser populated areas, Lampung, the country’s southernmost province which was affected by this policy, has soon become a settlement to heterogeneous cultures.

For this change, not only are the rest of Indonesians able to gain access to the lesser occupied areas of Sumatra, but it also paved way for the entry of human awareness to the archipelago’s previously uncharted areas.

PLACES TO VISIT/ THINGS TO DO IN LAMPUNG INDONESIA

While much about Indonesians are to be considered exotic from a foreigner standpoint, there is something about the Lampung subculture that is also unique from the local Indonesians. This makes the original inhabitants of Lampung a wonder to behold.

But let us also talk realistically here. Not many people would go on travel just to see a certain ethnicity at its most vivid and unique. Oftentimes, people travel to also see places they had never witnessed before. The vastness of the Lampung geography does not disappoint.

Here are some places you should visit when in Lampung:

White Sand Beaches

Popular weekend haven among local and foreign in Lampung are the white sand beaches of the province.

One of the most popular destinations which offer a cerulean-blue sea and white sands is Tangkil Island. The place is a  paradise for water sports lovers. You can go camping and stay overnight on the island. Apart from enjoying its beautiful waters. You can also enjoy paragliding, banana boat and flying fish among others.

 Way Kambas National Park

You must love animals if you choose to go for a preservation site such as the Way Kambas National Park that is home to the animal kingdom’s exotic and trained animals.

Failed to see Sumatra’s own tigers and rhinoceros at anywhere in its wilderness? How about the elephants who are able to do stunts? At this national park, they are all just a sight away to amaze.

Mount Krakatau

Technically, the island of Krakatau is several kilometers away from the nearest shore of Lampung. Yet, despite this, Mount Krakatau remains as one of the province’s nearby attractions due to this monumental landmass which occasionally shakes its neighboring regions and the historical 1883 eruption that changed the landscape of Sumatra and killed many of its people.

Kenkana Lepus Traditional House

One way to experience Lampung and have a glimpse of its colorful past is to pay a visit to a Kencana Lepus. The Kenkana Lepus is a traditional house on stilts that is rare in Lampung due to modernization. One of the most authentic left today is located in Jl. Diponegoro No. 56, in Sukadana Village, East Lampung Regency. The place is now serving as a museum in Lampung housing many important artifacts about the place.

How to get there : The house is located at Jalan Diponegoro no.56 in the Sukadana Village, Sukadana town, East Lampung Regency, right next to the Sukadana Village Office. You can reach the town in a 2 hours’ drive using a rented car or public bus.

Pura Jagad Dhita

One of the must-see places in Peniangan in Lampung Indonesia is the Balinese Village with Hindu temples found in almost all houses. This village is occupied by the migrants from Bali Indonesia.

 Kiluan Bay You might probably have seen dolphins do you amazing stunts in captivity. But have you seen dolphins living freely in the ocean? At Kiluan Bay, you would at the right seasons.

Within the walls of Raharjo Pugung Archeological Park is a cluster of phallic, stone megaliths. The place accidentally discovered in 1957. It is said that the place was forested and was not inhabited. They even thought at first that the forest was haunted. But in  1954, the transmigrants Pugung open the forest for settlements. While clearing the area,  the migrants found a large stone structure, a square-shaped mound of earth and stone statues of Princess Badhariah. The discovery was reported to the Department of Antiquities in Jakarta. In 1968  the initial research was made in the place and made a conclusion that the items found in the place were relics of megalithic Raharjo-classical. Archaeological Site of Pugung Raharjo

Another interesting site to visit in Lampung is the Pugung Raharjo which can be found at the regency of South Lampung, Lampung Province, Sumatra Indonesia. The place is approximately 50 km from Bandar, the capital of Lampung, Indonesia.

The site was uncovered in the 1950s when transmigrants from Java and Bali moved into the area and started to clear the jungle.

The place offers megalithic and prehistoric remains dating from the 12th to 16th century AD.

Pugung Raharjo was occupied from the 12th to 16th centuries. Some Buddhist and Hindu artifacts were also found at the place which includes ceramics from the Han Dynasty, Sung, and Ming, and a statue of Polynesia dated from the 6th century until the 15th century. The beads and porcelain found Ancient beads at the place indicated that the people of the area were also linked to international trade networks that visited the nearby Sunda Strait.

The site is now preserved as a national monument.

Ancient tools used by ancient humans in the form of large boulders were unearthed at the place You can see the upright stone or Menhir, Dolmen a table or a stone, gravestones which were used by prehistoric man as a place of worship, a place of deliberation, and place of burial.

WHERE TO EAT IN LAMPUNG

Apart from its Coffee Robusta beings its flagship product, they offer a wide array of traditional Indonesian Dishes.

Amongst its must-try offerings includes the Seruit which is a typical Lampung dish made of fish which is fried or baked, fish sauce mixed with shrimp paste, tempoyak (fermented durian) with some fresh vegetables. El’s Coffee

For Coffee lovers, Els Coffee is a place to go. The place offers a wide array of gourmet coffee products made from locally grown coffee all over Indonesia. You should try their Thaitella which is made of espresso coffee served as ice cubes and drizzled with caramel. To make this you must pour fresh milk over the frozen espresso. As you sip this drink you will realize that your drink is getting stronger as the frozen espresso slowly blending with the milk.

COMMUNICATION | GETTING CONNECTED

The moment you arrived at Lampung, Indonesia, make sure to buy a local Sim Card to get you connected. Sim Cards are very easy to acquire in Indonesia and they usually come with a load.

Lampung just like in other places in Indonesia uses Indonesian Rupiah.

The current conversion of Indonesian Rupiah to US Dollar is 1 USD= 13,252.98 Ruphia. Yes, one will get an instant millionaire when you are in Indonesia.

Moneychangers are also available in Lampung but not as many when compared to other cities. So better change your USD immediately the moment you reach the airport. I also learned that most money changers in Lampung are closed during Sundays, but of course, if your bank can transact internationally you can always withdraw from the ATM Machines to get the needed Rupiah. I run out of Rupiah several times during my visit because I went shopping for Batik and souvenirs in the city but just withdraw easily from the ATM machine.

Not all souvenir shops, stores, and restaurants accept credit cards too. So it would be best to always have the cash in your wallet.

HOW TO GET TO LAMPUNG

By plane From Jakarta, you can reach Bandar the capital city of Lampung by plane through it’s from Jakarta through its airport, the Raden Intan II Airport. The travel time is approximately 40 minutes.

From Raden Intan II airport, you can take a prepaid taxi to Bandar Lampung city center. There is a taxi counter which lists the various destinations with the prepaid rates. Please see below about Gojek app as your best travel partner when visiting Indonesia.https://www.go-jek.com/

By train You can reach also Lampung by train especially if you are coming from Palembang. We did this during our last visit. If you would like to take the train in Indonesia, it would be best to get the ticket online and at least a few days in advance as the train is always full. Of course, I would recommend you to take the Business – Executive Class for comfort. The legroom is nice and you can relax while traveling. Some of the train companies are as follows:

Limex Sriwijaya, Business-Executive class train and offers comfortable accommodation. This train departs from Palembang daily at eight o’clock in the evening and goes back from Bandar Lampung at half-past four in the morning. The rate fluctuates depending on the season, so I suggest that you just check their site.

Serving the same route as Limex Sriwijaya is the Rajabasa. This train only offers Economy class. It departs from Kertapati Station and Tanjungkarang Station at the same time, both at half-past eight in the morning.

KRDI Way Umpu, this train connects Bandar Lampung with Kotabumi. It departs daily with air-conditioned cabins for Economy class.

KRDI Seminung, serving the same route as KRDI Way Umpu. However, it might be quite uncomfortable to take this train because their cabins are not air-conditioned. By bus Buses from Jakarta to Lampung are also available regularly and traveling time is about 7 hours. This trip includes getting a boat as well. But normally the fare includes the boat already. You can find the buses near the train station in Jakarta.

GETTING AROUND LAMPUNG

Getting around Lampung is easy and relatively inexpensive because it is a small city. Again the best way to do this is to have the GoJek app. With this app, you can request a car or the Ojek which is a motorcycle taxi (perfect for the solo traveler).

eographically, Lampung province located on the southern tip of Sumatra island is not very far from Jakarta; it only takes 30 minutes to sail across from Merak Port in Java to Bakauheni Port in Sumatra.

White Sand Beach

Located 20 kilometers from Bandar Lampung, White Sand Beach is a popular destination due to its proximity to the provincial capital.

As the name suggests, the place gives a view the azure-blue sea and white, sandy beach. The beach is usually crowded with people on weekends, so expect a lot more visitors during this holiday season. 

Kiluan Bay is one of the most famous destinations in Lampung as it offers a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors: watching dolphins swimming freely in the ocean. The best time to see the dolphins is between the months of April and September, during the dry season.

Way Kambas National Park

Way Kambas National Park is a national park that focuses on the preservation and training of elephants. Apart from elephants, the place is also home to several endangered animals, such as Sumatran tigers and Sumatran rhinoceroses.

The location is only a two-hour drive from Bandar Lampung. To get there, you need to have permission from the entrance gate.

At the national park, you will get to see elephant shows like elephant soccer, experience riding on an elephant and other activities.

Pahawang Island

A haven for snorkelers, Pahawang Island is known for its underwater beauty of colorful corals and an array of sea creatures. The island is divided into two areas, big Pahawang and small Pahawang. 

Siger Tower

Siger Tower is a yellow-colored building that sits atop a hill that has become the icon of Lampung. The tower marks the zero point in southern Sumatra. To enter the site, you need to pay a small fee for parking ticket and entrance.

Putri Malu Waterfall

Located in Way Kanan, Putri Malu Waterfall is a lesser-known tourist attraction in Lampung. The name Putri Malu (shy princess) comes from the shape of the waterfall that looks bent, giving the appearance that it is shy. The height of the waterfall is 80 meters and it is mostly frequented by nature lovers who love to swim and take pictures.

Mount Krakatau

Mount Krakatau needs no introduction. Located in the Sunda Strait, it is a volcanic island that offers majestic views of the mountain the ocean.

This destination is most famous for its eruption in the year of 1883 and is now a nature conservation area. To visit it, you need to ask for permission from the Lampung Conservation Center.

Green Valley Tourism Park

Covering 30 hectares of land, the Green Valley Tourism Park consists of a recreational park, a water park and a mini zoo. The entrance fee is only Rp 10,000 (less than US$1), though you need to pay another Rp 35,000 to enter the water park.

Tanjung Setia Beach

Tanjung Setia Beach is a great alternative for surfers. Located in the west side of Lampung, the beach is said to have one of the best waves in the world.

However, the location is quite far: up to 270 kilometers away from Bandar Lampung or around six hours by car.

Pugung Raharjo Archeological Park

Located in Pugung Raharjo Village, 52 kilometers from Bandar Lampung, the archaeological park houses historic remains from the past, such as tombs and stone altars. (kes)

On Lampung Bay, 20 km south of the city center, visitors can enjoy the calm beach and the soft pearly white sand at the White sand Beach. Still in the Teluk Betung area, the Bumi Kedaton National Park features countryside ambience, complete with cool breeze, accompanied by the soothing sounds of the running river. If you wish to further explore the history of Lampung on your holiday, the Museum Sang Bumi Ruwa Jurai and the provincial Museum of Lampung offer centuries of collections and legacies of the province. The distinctive culture of Bandar Lampung is reflected through its buildings. At Kampung Ulok Gading and Kampung Kedamaian, the traditional houses of Lampung are presented, along with all the house wares, heirlooms and other traditional accessories.

Getting around in Bandar Lampung is easy and relatively inexpensive because it is a small city. Traveling between the 2 main areas, (Tanjungkarang to Teluk Betung) will only take about 30-40 minutes by car. If you wish to mingle with the locals, you can try to take a ride in the angkutan kota or angkot, that came with different designated routes for different areas and distinguished by different colors. When you are near your destination, don’t forget to ask the driver to stop at the left side, so you can get off. For more personal comforts, you can use taxis or ojek (motorbike taxi).

If you wish to learn more about Lampung , you can visit these sites where you can observe the authenticity and originality of Lampung’s traditional houses. The architecture of the houses, their furniture and decoration maintain the authenticity of Lampung’s culture. Bandar Lampung is accessible by air via the Radin Inten II international airport located at Branti Raya, South Lampung district.

The airport was initially built for domestic flights, but since 2008 the airport was officially declared as an international airport that can accommodate large airplanes such as Boeing 737-200, to Boeing 737-500, Airbus A320.

Bandar Lampung is fortunate to be one of only two major cities in Sumatra to have fully operating railway systems. The single route train connects Bandar Lampung with Palembang in South Sumatra. The Rajabasa bus terminal is the main public transportation center of the city. As one of the busiest terminals in Sumatra, the Rajabasa Terminal is the destination of inter-provincial buses from Jakarta and other cities in Java. The terminal also connects Bandar Lampung with other major cities on the island, such as Palembang, Medan, Pekanbaru and more.

Lampung Museum, a two-storeyed brick-red building, was founded in 1975 as a form of repository for the rich cultural history of Lampung. It is located at a 15 minutes drive from Bandar Lampung and provides visitors with a long glance at the vast historical records amassed over the years. These records are in the form of prehistoric artefacts, cultural relics, antique ceramics and even flaura and flora.

Hijau has its own waterpark, football field, outbound activities, mini-train, fishing arena, ATV grounds, paintball and airsoft, a haunted house, 4-D theatre, and much more. Lembah Hijau also provides restaurants and even accommodations for those who want to stay and enjoy the situation longer. The entrance fee for visitors is Rp 10,000, whereas to enter the waterpark and water boom an additional charge of Rp 35,000 needs to be paid. Puncak Mas Puncak Mas is a gorgeous mountain pass located in the Bogor Raya region of Western Java. Initially it was a private area that belonged to Mr Thomas Aziz Riska, but lately, at the beginning of 2019, the area was functional as a public spot. Puncak mas is a well-loved destination for all the photography enthusiasts to store in all the greenery and beauty of the place in their cameras. The tourists can visit Puncak Mas from 8.00 a.m. till 10.00 pm. every day, while on weekends, it is open till 12.00 a.m. according to the WIB.

The entry fees for the same is Rp 20,000 per person. There are treehouses offering unique views from the top and in general, can accommodate around 15 people at a time. Apart from the treehouses, there are Gazebos, where the tourists can rest after long hours of sightseeing and enjoy the various spots of Puncak mas. It also has an outdoor cafe where one can take a rest while enjoying the delicious delicacies that are offered there. In addition to this, the entire area is decked up with lights and decorative articles, making it a lively place on weekends. There are arrangements made for live music, DJ nights and many more.

Ulun Lampung is usually use their own language, kind of traditional language which is the branch of Sundik, the family of west Malay-Polynesian language.

While on Lampung script, it is called as Had Lampung is a form of writing that has a relationship with a alphabet Pallawa from South India. Had Lampung is influenced by Pallawa script and Arabic letters. Had Lampung is also have a form of kinship with the characters of Rencong, Rejang Bengkulu script and Bugis script.

The most economic commodities for Lampung is coming from their coffee plantation of Robusta Coffee beans, Cocoa beans, coconuts and cloves. The quality from Lampung coffee is proudly shown by the Nestlé company that use their coffee as the raw material for its coffee products.

This kind of handicraft is made by women, both housewives and girls, usually called as Muli Muli. The purpose is was originally to fill the spare time in order to require the tradition, which is considered sacred.

Taman Nasional Way Kambas merupakan salah satu taman nasional yang berumur paling tua di Indonesia . Taman Nasional Way Kambas adalah taman nasional yang berfokus pada pelatihan dan pelindungan gajah, sehingga hal yang wajib dilhat di Taman Nasional Way Kambas adalah gajahnya. Selain gajah, Taman Nasional Way Kambas juga melindungi beberapa hewan yang hampir punah seperti harimau Sumatera dan badak Sumatera.

Taman Nasional Way Kambas berlokasi sekitar 2 jam perjalanan dari kota Bandar Lampung. Untuk dapat masuk ke kawasan ini, kamu harus memperoleh ijin yang dapat diperoleh di gerbang masuk Taman Nasional Way Kambas. Di sini kamu dapat melihat berbagai pertunjukan gajah, misalnya sepak bola gajah, menaiki gajah, dan lain-lain.

4. Pulau Kubur

Pulau Kubur mungkin terdengar seram bagi sebagian orang, namun sebenarnya Pulau Kubur adalah surganya para pecinta kegiatan memancing. Menurut cerita warga setempat, pulai ini dinamai Pulau Kubur karena dulunya pulau ini digunakan untuk acara penaburan abu jenazah. Berlokasi di Teluk Lampung, pulau ini dapat dicapai dengan menggunakan perahu dalam waktu kurang lebih 20 menit. Pulau Kubur relatif sepi pada hari-hari biasa, namun pada hari libur dapat terlihat cukup banyak wisatawan yang datang untuk memancing. Ikan di sekitar Pulau Kubur sangat banyak dan beragam karena ada banyak karang besar yang merupakan habitat ikan di sekitar Pulau Kubur.

Gunung Krakatau dahulu kala pernah meletus pada tahun 1883, sekarang telah menjadi tempat wisata yang terkenal. Saat ini Gunung Krakatau sudah menjadi daerah konservasi alam, oleh karena itu, untuk memasuki area Gunung Krakatau, kamu harus memiliki ijin terlebih dahulu. Ijin ini dapat diperoleh dari balai konservasi Lampung.

8. Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau

Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau mulai dibuka pada tahun 2006. Mempunyai lahan seluas kurang lebih 30 hektar, Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau adalah tempat wisata di Lampung yang mempunyai konsep cagar alam, budaya, dan adat. Dari 30 hektar tersebut, 80%nya adalah areal alami dan sisanya adalah bangunan. Mempunyai taman rekreasi, water boom, dan kebun binatang mini, Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau adalah tempat wisata yang cukup lengkap untuk wisata keluarga.

Harga tiket masuk Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau adalah 10,000 Rupiah, untuk dapat masuk ke areal water boom, kamu harus membayar tambahan harga tiket sebesar 35,000 Rupiah per orang. Water boom sendiri adalah wahana paling favorit di Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau.

9. Pantai Pahawang

Selain tempat wisata diatas, Pantai Pahawang di Lampung Selatan ini juga bisa jadi pilihan untuk melepas lelah dan stress daat berkunjung ke Lampung. Pulau Pahawang ini terletak di Kabupaten Pesawaran dan merupakan destinasi favorit warga Jakarta karena jaraknya yang lumayan dekat.

Cara mengakses Pantai di Pulau Pahawang ini cukup melalui Pelabuhan Bakauheni atau Kota Bandar Lampung, yang nantinya akan memakan perjalanan sekitar 3 jam sampai ke Pelabuhan Ketapang. Setelahnya kamu tinggal naik kapal dari Pelabuhan ketapang sekitar 20-30 menit menuju Pulau Pahawangnya.

10. Pantai Tanjung Setia

Pantai Tanjung Setia adalah alternatif bagus untuk para pecinta selancar yang sudah bosan berselancar di Pantai Pelabuhan Ratu, Jawa Barat . Terletak di sisi barat Lampung, Pantai Tanjung Setia mempunyai salah satu ombak terbaik di dunia, menurut para peselancar yang telah mencoba tantangan selancar di Pantai Tanjung Setia.

Lokasinya memang cukup jauh, sektiar 270 KM dari Bandar Lampung, dan membutuhkan waktu sekitar 6 jam untuk mencapainya, namun tidak perlu kuatir, pecinta selancar tidak akan kecewa! Mengingat lokasinya yang lumayan jauh dan terpencil, Pantai Tanjung Setia mempunyai kondisi yang baik dan tidak rusak oleh kegiatan manusia, bagaikan mutiara yang bersembunyi dengan sempurna.

11. Taman Purbakala Pugung Raharjo

Terletak di Desa Pugung Raharjo, Taman Purbakala Pugung Raharjo adalah kompleks peninggalan kebudayaan masa lalu. Berlokasi sekitar 52 KM dari kota Bandar Lampung, Taman Purbakala Pugung Raharjo mempunyai koleksi peninggalan purbakala berupa kuburan batu, meja batu, altar batu, batu mayat, dan lain-lain. Wisata sejarah ini memang kurang begitu diminati oleh anak muda jaman sekarang, namun tidak ada salahnya mencoba jenis wisata ini supaya tidak bosan.

mohon keamanannya ditingkatkan pernah kami ke Bandarlampung tahun 2013 lalu. Bukan main mengganggunya suasana ketika keluar dermaga pelabuhan Bakauni para calo kendaraan yang memaksa orang dalam menawarkan kendaraannya. akhirnya kami dapat naik dengan terpaksa kendaraan bus jurusan Bakauni-Metro, dan terpaksa kami minta turun dan diturunkan di Panjang. Begitu juga di Panjang suasana yang kurang sedap terjadi mungkin para calopun melihat kerepotan kami bawa anak kecil kelihatan kerepotan kami tersebutlah dimanfaatkan para calo kendaraan kecil-kecil yang tarik sana tarik sini tidak ada rasa kasihannya, akhirnya naiklah saya kekendaraan kecil jurusan Panjang Sukadana. Agak tenanglah kami dapat sopir yang ramah, dan slamat turun di Berhen Tanjungbintang.

kalau ke Lampung lebih baik naik mobil BIS langsung yang turun di pull-nya misalnya rosalia, putra remaja damri, puspa jaya dll.. lebih aman ketimbang naik mobil putus-putus. terlalu banyak calo itulah yang membuat orang malas jalan-jalan ngeteng ke Lampung.. hati-hati ya…

These Are the Best (and Worst) Times to Hit the Road for July 4, According to AAA

And the best time is sooner than you'd think.

A record-setting nearly 71 million Americans are expected to travel for the Fourth of July holiday, cementing this as the summer of travel. 

In total, 70.9 million travelers are forecast to head 50 miles or more from home from Saturday, June 29, to Sunday, July 7, according to AAA . Of those, 60.6 million people are expected to hit the road.

This year’s forecast, which for the first time includes the entire Fourth of July week plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after, represents a 5 percent increase compared to last year and an 8 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic in 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement, adding, “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”

For travelers looking to drive over July 4, mornings tend to be the best to avoid traffic. The worst times to travel by car ahead of the holiday are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m, according to AAA. Travelers heading back on Monday, July 8, should also avoid rush hour traffic during both the morning and afternoon.

Overall, the best day for traffic will be Monday, July 1.

While traffic is likely inevitable, the good news is gas prices are expected to continue dropping leading up to July 4. Currently, gas is averaging $3.47 per gallon nationwide, according to AAA , which is lower than last year’s national average of $3.53 per gallon during the same time period.

Beyond the roads , a total of 5.74 million people are expected to fly over the July 4 holiday, a nearly 7 percent increase compared to last year. The prediction comes as unprecedented numbers of travelers have swarmed airports across the country , setting new records for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

More people may be flying, but AAA said domestic airfare is actually 2 percent cheaper over the Fourth of July holiday than last year. The average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is currently $800.

In addition, more than 4.6 million travelers are forecast to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains.

Kaylee Stith is a travel agent at The Travel Mechanic , a luxury-travel agency in North Carolina. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Stith, who left her full-time teaching job to become a luxury-travel agent last year. It has been edited for length and clarity.

Before I started travel advising, I worked as a middle-school special-education teacher in North Carolina.

I stumbled upon the travel-agent industry. I was following someone on Instagram who recently started her own Disney-specific travel agency. I love Disney, and when she announced that she was hiring an agent, I thought that would be a fun part-time job. I applied and made it through the first round. I didn't get hired, but I couldn't stop thinking about becoming a travel advisor.

After that, I started exploring on my own. I listened to podcasts about the industry and learned more from the American Society of Travel Advisors.

One day I was listening to " Trade Secrets ," a travel-agent podcast, when they interviewed Lauren Doyle, the president and owner of The Travel Mechanic, an agency based where I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I filled out the form for prospective agents and interviewed, and I was offered a position on the team. I signed a contract on April 1, 2023, and left my full-time teaching role in June 2023.

Skills I transferred from my teaching career

Some of my skills transferred from teaching, like being organized and helping people. Because I came from a special-education setting, I was often the liaison between students and their teachers. Being a travel advisor is similar because you're connecting with your clients and interfacing with them.

But the transition was also a challenge, because I forgot what it feels like not to know what you're doing.

My dad is a commercial airline pilot, and I've been traveling my whole life and planning my own trips for a long time. I assumed I'd naturally slide into this role and automatically know how to do everything. But there's a lot to learn.

There were very practical things I had to learn, like how to use the customer-relationship-management system we put client information into, how to take payments, and how to make sure clients are signing off on the right terms and conditions — a lot of that was new to me.

How I make money as an advisor

I offer a complimentary consultation and discuss options with the client to ensure we're both a good fit. Then I charge a flat-rate planning fee. Some agents have a base amount, and depending on how complicated the trip is or how many people are going, they might charge more. Once the client pays the fee, I put their itinerary together.

I also make a commission on things like hotels and tour packages. Some suppliers will pay a decent commission; if you work on the higher end, you make a bigger commission. Commissions are usually paid out after the client has finished the trip.

Because I work with The Travel Mechanic, I get some leads, but I have to find most of them on my own. So a big part of this job is telling everyone I'm a travel agent. I'll mention it in conversations with people I meet because it's travel, it's fun, and people enjoy talking about that.

My clients have so far been in my circles. I've worked with several people from my church, friend groups, and family. Sometimes it's good to start with the people near you.

Have a niche when you're starting out

It's good to have a niche to present yourself as an expert in when starting out. My niches are Hawaii and the UK because they're what I know and love. My family loves Hawaii, and I've visited regularly since I was 9. I've also been to England many times. I studied abroad in college and lived in Bath for four months as a student.

The locations are similar in some ways because they're higher-ticket bucket-list destinations. They're also great destinations for first-time travelers who want to adventure out on a bigger trip but go somewhere that feels familiar.

Hawaii is still far away, but the driving and currency are familiar. Though England is also pretty far away, the language and culture are not that different from the US. Those are my two favorite destinations, and I do some Disney trips on the side.

Advice for prospective travel agents

Many people think this job is fun and relatively easy to get into. You don't need specific training, but it can be hard to get going. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

If you want to get into travel advising, I recommend starting part time or having another source of income before you get established and move to full time.

Also, do a lot of research. This will help you see if you're a good fit for the industry and find an agency you feel aligned with that will support you. If you're unsure where to start, visit Host Agency Reviews to research agencies near you.

While it's possible to go at it alone, starting with an agency is easier. Your commissions with an agency may be a bit lower, but an agency will offer advice and assist you when you're starting out with leads.

Lessons I've learned so far

I attended the annual Ensemble travel-agent conference in Las Vegas last year. I met with suppliers, tour operators, destination-management companies, and other agents. Everyone was welcoming and encouraging, which was a pleasant surprise. Because I'm an independent contractor, it'd be easy to think I'm competing with other people, but that isn't the case; there are enough clients to go around.

Also, I learned that it's OK that I'm not the perfect fit for everyone. I can be a perfectionist, but it's impossible to always get everything right. I had a potential client who contacted me about a honeymoon, and I felt like it was a great conversation, but she never got back to me. I couldn't stop thinking what did I do wrong? But I can't be the best fit for everyone. It's been a tough lesson, but I've learned and grown so much this past year.
