Nibble on ´botanitas´ while perusing the produce and take in the sights, smells and atmosphere of this classic Mexican mercado.
Once back at the chef´s lovely kitchen, it´s time to get hands on with the ingredients as your chef leads you through an exploration of the flavors, colors, and aromas of the Mexican cocina. San Miguel De Allende

Known as the Mexican Hill Town, San Miguel is so picturesque and the climate so divine that it has become an artists’ and retirees’ mecca. The magnificent Gothic style pink cantera stone Cathedral, landmark of San Miguel is the focal point of the downtown area Our hotel is a few blocks from the jardin – called the plaza in most Mexican towns. At every turn the many flower filled patios, the quaint shops and bubbling fountains will delight you. The historic center in the downtown area has kept the facades of the buildings just as they were in Colonial times. Pack your walking shoes for exploring the many cobblestone streets and do bring plenty of film. The tour includes Guanajuato , the sub-terrenean city as well as Dolores Hidalgo and Queretaro.
DAY 1 – Your journey begins as our chartered motor coach crosses into Mexico. Routing is through Monterrey and Saltillo. Overnight in Matehuala, San Luis Potosi.
DAY 2 – After breakfast, we leave Matehuala behind and travel past San Luis Potosi and into a rich agricultural area called “La Bajia”. Then on to Dolores Hidalgo where we visit Father Hidalgo’s church. Enjoy an ice cream (Jo’s treat) before visiting a tile and pottery shop on the edge of town. Continue to San Miguel where after a late lunch, you can explore on your own or join your guide as he introduces you to San Miguel. Tonight you will have fun choosing your own little intimate restaurant. Just follow the soft strumming sound of guitars. Overnight in San Miguel de Allende. AB
DAY 3 – Board your coach this morning for an all day tour to Guanajuato, known as the subterranean city. At one time, Guanajuato was the richest city in Mexico producing twenty percent of the world’s silver. Ride the teleferico across the city. Downtown, our city tour includes the tree shaded Plaza de Reforma, the Cervantino Museum and the two story colorful market place where the famous Guanajuato pottery can be found. Arrive back about 6:00p.m. Overnight in San Miguel de Allende. B
DAY 4 – Awaken to the ringing of church bells, the singing of the birds on the tree shaded plaza. The day is free to enjoy, relax and hang loose. Explore to your heart’s content or shop and shop and shop. Overnight in San Miguel de Allende. B
NOTE: Day 3 and Day 4 may be interchanged depending on the day of the week. Advise your guide if you wish to stay in San Miguel.
DAY 5 – Pack up this morning wistfully leaving San Miguel behind. Visit Queretaro with its aqueducts dating to colonial times and Jo’s favorite spot, the Convent of the Cross, designed by the same Franciscan architect-monk who designed the Alamo in Texas. Time to shop for opals of the region. Leave for San Luis Potosi where Jo has a wonderful surprise for you scheduled for 8:00pm. These musicians will steal your heart away. Overnight in San Luis Potosi. B

Dear Traveler,
Many have questions regarding our policy on vaccinations and the wearing of masks.
For your own safety and the safety of those around you, it is highly recommended that you wear a mask especially in crowded, enclosed areas such as a bus or an airplane. Masks continue to be a key tool against the spread of Covid-19 and it’s mutation.
There may be attractions, museums, restaurants or other establishments that we may visit that will deny entry unless you are wearing a mask. It is better to be prepared than to be left out.
In an attempt to continue our battle against the spread of Covid-19, Go …With JO! Tours & Travel respectfully requests that you submit a copy of your vaccination record at the time of your reservation.

What people love about san miguel de allende tours.
Excellent trip. Fabulous guide well informed and extremely helpful. Well organised and so much variety
My wife and I along with three friends signed up the tour to Mexico from Indus Travel. The total 12-day Maya Culture trip really gave us opportunities to learn Mexico indigenous cultures thoroughly. We have seen a lot of ruins and pyramids, each of them has different representations and can tell the history of what was happening atthat time. We also had chances to visit the indigenous families toexperence the real Mexican people's life inthe rural area. The views of volcanoes, villages and canyons are also unforgettable. This is a small group with total 7 tourists, our driver/tour guide is a very experienced guide, Jose explained the history in sequence of events in and out. Most of all with 2500km driving he made us fell safe with his skills. All in all, this trip worths a 5+ star. I was so surprised that Indus Travel assigned a tour coordinator dedicated to our group, Kathlene helped a lot to make the arrangements for the whole trip, her prompt responses made us worry free.
A unique experience of seeing the most quaint and beautiful colonial towns in Mexico. The best part was that I was the only one in the tour accompanied by Mr. Luis who was the guide and the driver in a brand new car I mean zero miles. Mr Luis is a wonderful gentleman who is a knowledgeable and cordial. He took time and care to show me everything .and stayed beyond his working hours to help me see the places and enjoy the events. I truly enjoyed my time in Mexico. I believe Mr. Luis made it all possible and I thank him for that.

"We loved the travels! It was a good mixture between highlights and 'traveling'. It is an organized tour, meaning if people booked it on the same dates, it can be that you are traveling together. Some of the traveling days are long, be aware of that together with the temperatures in these regions. The contact with the organization went good! When something is unclear or you have questions someone is available at all times.

"Good relaxing trip. We spent lots of time by near waters which is my favorite way to spend time.

"We really enjoyed the Wonders of the Maya tour. Miguel was an excellent guide and Jesus was a very friendly and helpful driver. Miguel was so knowledgeable, personable, and experienced. You could tell he was passionate about his work and the Mayan ruins. We really enjoyed listening to all the information he had throughout the trip. We were looking for someone who would orient us to each place we went so we wouldn't have to do the research ourselves. We travel to new places to get a flavor of the place and Miguel exceeded our expectations. Thank you so much for all your great work

From Guanajuato to San Miguel de Allende
Words by Dalene Heck / Photography by Pete Heck
When we started faintly planning for our romp through Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato was near the top of our must-see list.
It had everything we were looking for: a small and colourful colonial city up in the Bajio mountains, a welcome refuge after the heat of a coastal stay , and San Miguel de Allende gets rave reviews from most everyone we know, including some Mexican friends.
But then we heard several people also speak fondly of Guanajuato and we changed our minds. Only an hour away from San Miguel de Allende, the immediate draw to the state capital city was due to reports of fewer tourists and ex-pats and the ability to immerse ourselves in a truly Mexican city.
It was definitely all of that and more, and we were happy to spend a month there. But being so close to San Miguel de Allende, we decided to make a quick trip there to see if we had made the right choice.
First impressions had us second-guessing our decision.
San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is a smaller and less congested city, and the variety of baroque Spanish architecture and colours across the historic center is truly captivating.
At the heart of the cobblestone-laden historic center stands the neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a striking church with pink towers that command attention above the main plaza of El Jardín.
In a way, we were also happy to briefly be in a place with better tourist infrastructure – we didn’t need to rely on our terribly broken Spanish which made attractions more accessible.
I think on arrival I expected to not like it much at all, being fiercely protective of my love for Guanajuato. But there was little I could find to pick on – we enjoyed a variety of delicious food and found our endless bouts of wandering to be equally seductive as in Guanajuato.
San Miguel de Allende carried the same evening electricity where the locals poured into the streets to gather, perform, or just sit back and enjoy.
There were more gringos mixed into the crowd to be sure, but they never distracted from being an authentic experience.

It’s a place to shop, dine, and experience local culture while supporting the community and enjoying a diverse array of flavours and products.
Plaza de la Soledad
A must see while exploring the historic district and city center of San Miguel de Allende, and a great place to sit a while and people watch.
Where To Stay
There are a lot of options in San Miguel de Allende from luxury hotels to grungy hostels and we settled in a private room in La Catrina Hostel , on the edge of the historic center.
It was spotless, well located, and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable, plus the noise carried easily down our hallway, but overall it was a decent stay.
Visiting San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato was, on a whole, thoroughly pleasurable. But as we boarded the bus to head back to Guanajuato and reflected on our stay, we realized that we were happy to be returning.
In a word, San Miguel de Allende was just too polished , a little too built for the tourist. Nice for a visit, but for a longer stay, we felt more at home in Guanajuato.
We had made the right choice for us to live in Guanajuato, but definitely recommend visiting San Miguel de Allende.

Hmmm, decisions! We will be there later this year and we’re also trying to decide where to stay for a month. We’ve heard Guanajuato is lovely too, so I think we might pick that spot like you have 🙂 Carmen
If you’re looking for a quaint place in San Miguel for a month, try Tres Casitas. Four little apartments in the center of town, designed by artist Nanci Closson. Best of all, the price is right!
Sounds great – will look into it – thanks!
How’s your Spanish? One thing to consider is that there is very little English in Guanajuato, making things a little more difficult.
We’re by no means fluent at the moment – but we have six weeks of intensive classes before we get to Mexico so hopefully we’ll get by 🙂
Hello, I’m planning to come to GTO and SMA this summer to visit a friend, last year he had a rental car so we drove from gto to sma, this year he will not. Flying into Leon/gto is there a service or transport to get to sma? And then from sma to gto?
Hi Mark – I’ve never flown into the airport there (always came via Mexico City), but I am sure there must be transport. And there are plenty of buses that also run in between GTO and SMA daily (it’s only an hour drive).
We felt the same as you about Guanajuato and SMA. It was a nice place to visit (as was Leon), but we’re definitely glad we stayed in Guanajuato.
Now if only we could export the fantastic Mexican food around the world with no loss in quality. 🙁
I am aching for some El Pastor. Damn you Mexico, and your seductive food.
Glad you were happy with your decision! I just love the churches
I definitely know what you mean! Some cities are way more liveable than others and suited for slower travel rather than a day trip or weekend getaway. Lovely pictures, as always! Thanks for sharing.
Happy travels 🙂
We’re on the other side of the fence. We have stayed in both San Miguel and Guanajuato (SMA for a week on two separate occasions, and Guanajuato for two nights at the end of our first week in SMA). We instantly loved SMA from the minute I started researching it, and we continue to love everything about it, even after continued research and two stays – so much so that we have decided to retire there this year. It is a very beautiful, welcoming small city and very easy to navigate. There is a very comfortable feeling one gets in SMA. It is easy to picture making a new life there even though we don’t speak Spanish yet.
We visited Guanajuato for two days and found it a beautiful, fascinating city. We bumped into a few expats and spent some time with them and got the impression that they were there instead of SMA because they preferred not to have the company of other expats – not a particularly welcoming feeling. It is also a larger, busier city and didn’t have the intimate feeling that we found in SMA.
Just my two pesos!
Thanks for your two pesos Laurie! Always good to have the other side represented. 🙂
The best option is to stay in both places! (Which we did) We found Guanajuato to be more Mexican, perhaps more authentic, whereas San Miguel de Allende is more of a resort town, with more expats. But really, both are lovely…
Thanks for your POV, having stayed in both places! They do each have their merits, for sure.
I’ve found something similar—the picture-perfect places are great for, well, pictures, but they rarely sink their claws into me and I generally find myself a bit bored by them, like there’s nothing much beneath the surface. They are perfect for day trips or a long weekend, though!
Not surprised (you and Pedro favor Guanajuato over SMdA) – no doubt much like my less than enchanted feeling about that likewise “expat darling” in Asia: Chiang Mai. imho, a nice enough place to visit, but…
I too thought of heading to the mountains of MX upon my exodus from 3 years in Asia, but am convinced that SMdA is (sadly) a bit too “expatty” for my cup of tea. Rather, one of the smaller locales nearby (like Guanajuato) would likely suit me far better.
But yes, that “tourist infrastructure” can be momentarily seductive (esp. if you’re an expat that’s been off the grid for a goodly while), but…
For me, personally it gets old (actually, a good bit annoying) swiftly, and such is NOT the reason I choose to live in foreign lands.
I actually was 85% sure I’d not like Cuenca, when I landed here in Ecuador 3 months ago. As it too, has the infamous “darling” reputation, I figured I’d have to head to smaller towns like Loja or Cotacatchi to find the cultural authenticity that I seek. But (relative to Chiang Mai, and perhaps SMdA) the ratio of expats/tourists to locals here is (happily) significantly lower, with just the right amount of Western infrastructure, and my Spanish is expanding by leaps and bounds.
In short, I do believe I’ve found my new “home”, and am presently applying for permanent residency here in Ecuador!
Interesting! We’ve been to Cuenca, over four years ago now, would love to return and see how much it has changed.
And not surprised that Ecuador has got it’s grips on you! We spent four months there and adored it.
Gorgeous photos! Unfortunately our travels through Mexico have not yet led us to this area but SMA and Guanajuato are definitely on our list. We do however understand what your saying as we have recently found a similar situation. We are currently house sitting in Jocotepec, a small traditional Mexican town on Lake Chapala with absolutely no tourists and only a handful of ex-pats. On the other hand Ajijic which is only 30 min down the lake has a huge community of ex-pats and therefore a bigger selection of restaurants and activities etc. Ajijic is definitely prettier and we like it very much but Jocotepec has its own charm as it is truly Mexican and therefore has more character and authenticity. Luckily for us it’s a cheap and short bus ride between the two!
Sounds really lovely! That is one thing about being in Mexico – you are never too far from an expat town anyways, right? Can always go in to get a fix on good pizza. 🙂
I like both equally, but seeing as friends and I picked up from D.F. to SMA for the weekend, I’m glad we got to see SMA more slowly, to drink in the feel of the town, to see both expats and residents in the city. I did not expect to see a lot of Canadians here, but if I had read about SMA before-hand, I’d have known. In a way, it’s a good thing I *didn’t* and went into the weekend with little prior knowledge, relying only on my friends’ enthusiasm. They were right. Thanks for writing about SMA!
We’re doing the opposite, we’re living in San Miguel for 3 months, housesitting. We’ve only been here week but I’m really enjoying it. I’m really looking forward to visiting Guanajuato. Who knows we may end up staying there for a while after this.
Glad you are enjoying it Kellie! Do make a trip to Guanajuato after! I am sure you will like it as well.
I didn’t visit that part of Mexico unfortunately but I will make sure to add them both to my already long list of places to visit when I go back. So much to love in that country!
I have yet to explorer either but from your pictures San Miguel looks super charming! Love the cobble stone streets.
Great post. San Miguel looks very pretty in a way I did not expect it to be.
Wow, amazing architecture! I feel like I could wander for hours around that town taking hundreds of photos! The cobble stone streets…my favorite.
We chose San Miguel de Allende seven years ago for its combination of climate, culture and the basic warmth of its people. I became interested in the process of becoming an expat and wrote a book based on conversations with 32 Americans and Canadians who had also made the move. It’s mainly a way of getting inside their heads. Whether you’re thinking of settling on the beach, or in one of the colonial cities of the interior, you need to listen to this conversation. It’s called San Miguel de Allende: A Place in the Heart, and there is no other book like it. Here’s a link to an excerpt on my website: www.sanmiguelallendebooks.com/aplaceintheheart.html
Gorgeous architecture and colors. Love the warm feeling of the city.
Thinking about living in San Miguel? What if you knew the answers to the questions you have to ask? What about crime, health care, housing? What about cost of living and nearly 20 other issues? My new book shines a light on the subject. It’s called Living in San Miguel: The Heart of the Matter, and there’s a sample on my website or on Amazon.
http://www.sanmiguelallendebooks.com/livinginsanmiguel.html
I just wrote a long comment and then when I learned that I had to enter http//: in front of my email, my entry went away.
Too tired to reconstruct let me just say that it is absolutely appaling to read the moronic comments of those arrogant, self-centered, ignorant, self-righteous unfellow Americans who slime and slime around Mexico– Como no Otro–(of course without a word of Spanish they won’t even understand that slogan)–looking for that “all-Mexican community when it is right here in the Western, if not international Shangri-La of artsy, craftsy, bookish, musical, lecture, cinema, hot mineral spring, eternal spring, historic colonial San Miguel.
But thank God, except for a very few occasions that prove the proverbial rule, I’ve never seen anyone screaming at a merchandise vendor in the huge market or in the stores or on the streets like the ones the self-styled author has described elsewhere in this SMA website in order to sell more of his egregiously incorrect and immoral books.
No, in my 20 years here, even without my excellent Spanish, I interact daily with everyone from the shoeshine men in the Jardin to the tradespeople and the professionals; and other than from the aches and pains of my ever advancing old bones (83) I’ve not only never had a bad day for any reason but those two decades have been and are the greatest treasure of my life. And I’ve visited just about every other of the 32 states and the awful D.F.
Thus w3hat may be the only possible good thing to be associated witrh those nasty naysayers who find SMA “too touristy” is that hopefully they have, or are going to decide to deliver their disgusting selves to Guanajuato, Ajijic or elsewhere to rail against the Mexicans unfortunate enough to cross their pitiful paths.
For me, thank God that none of them are my neighbors. Viva San Miguel!

The Perfect 4-Day Itinerary for San Miguel de Allende
I t’s easy to fall in love with San Miguel de Allende. The beautiful colors, Baroque architecture and incredible rooftop restaurants all contribute to the charm of the city. Artisans have been flocking to San Miguel de Allende for almost 80 years because of its artistic beauty and mild climate. My mother even mentioned that she would like to visit San Miguel de Allende one day to see the art scene and visit the galleries. I made it easy for her to fulfill her dream by moving just 45 minutes down the road to Queretaro. Now she can visit anytime she wants!
Voted as the Best Small City in the World by Conde Naste Travelers five times in the last six years (2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022), there’s something magical about this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
So what is there to do in San Miguel de Allende? I’ve put together this 4-day itinerary for you to experience the best of San Miguel and its surroundings.

How to Get to San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel does not have its own airport, so getting here takes a little more planning. It’s located smack dab between two international airports, one in Queretaro (QRO), and one in Leon (BJX). From Queretaro, it’s just over an hour’s drive, and you can easily hire a taxi or private transfer to take you. From Leon airport it’s almost an hour and half drive away. Private transport is available.
Private transfers are more expensive, but the cars or vans are usually very nice, clean and have air conditioning.
We do not recommend asking your hotel to send a pickup. We have heard horror stories about the vehicles being dirty and not air conditioning.
Your total time after arriving at either airport, getting through immigration and customs, and getting to your hotel or Airbnb in San Miguel will be around three hours, give or take.
When to Visit San Miguel de Allende
There’s no wrong time to visit San Miguel! San Miguel de Allende is a popular vacation spot for Mexicans and foreigners. Holidays are always spectacular in San Miguel, but they are the busiest time. The Easter holidays (one week before and one week after) is the most crowded. The week of Day of the Dead is also really busy.
Funny enough, the low season in San Miguel de Allende is during July and August when wine harvest festivals take place. You may think it’s because it’s too hot, but it really isn’t. With nighttime rains, the daytime temperatures never go above mid-80s, and the nights are in the 50s. So if you are looking to escape the heat where you are, visit San Miguel de Allende!
Where to Stay in San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel has plenty of boutique hotels for you to choose from within walking distance of everything. Check out Booking.com for great choices and prices.
Day 1: Walk Around Centro
Arrive, unpack, grab a hat, and start exploring San Miguel. The streets and old mansions are an attraction of their own. A walking tour is the best way to learn more about San Miguel but watch your step on the cobblestones. Take some time to admire the doorknobs, light fixtures, and inner courtyards of the unique shops and boutique hotels.
Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel or La Parroquia , will be your central point in San Miguel de Allende. Built by Mexican architect Zeferino Gutiérrez based off of a European postcard he saw. The church was built in the 17 th century, but the façade made of pink sandstone and often visually referred to looking like a wedding cake, was built in the 19 th century. Jardin Allende , the park right in front of La Parroquia, is a good place to relax with a coffee or ice cream while watching the locals (Mexicans and expats) gather for photos and chats.
There’s several other churches to peruse around San Miguel de Allende. If you have seen the movie Once Upon a Time In Mexico with Antonio Banderas, you’ll recognize not only la Parroquia, but Templo de Oratorio de San Felipe Neri on Calle Insurgentes (this is also where they did the bus scene), the shell shaped T emplo de Nuestra Señora de La Salud during the fight scene with El Machete, and Parque Benito Juarez during the motorcycle chase scene.
For more film locations in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and Queretaro, read our post: Once Upon a Time in Mexico Film Locations .
Rooftop Dining in San Miguel de Allende
For dinner, make a reservation at one of the many rooftop restaurants around San Miguel de Allende. San Miguel has a vibrant international food scene and one of the most gorgeous skylines you will ever experience. Two restaurants right next to the La Parroquia we recommend are La Posadita for traditional Mexican cuisine and Quince for Mexican-Asian fusion and nightlife. Read Dine at These Fantastic San Miguel Restaurants for other fantastic restaurant suggestions.
Tip: make a reservation 30 minutes before sunset (google the sunset time) so you can watch the light dance across the rooftops before the lights are illuminated. Also, bring a sweater. Even in summer, the temperatures drop to the 50s at night.
Day 2: Shopping and Sightseeing in San Miguel de Allende
Now that you are rested, let’s really explore San Miguel de Allende. If you like street art, book a tour through the San Antonio or Guadalupe neighborhoods. Hidden cafes and colorful bougainvillea trees add to the magic of these revived neighborhoods.
Take a private walking tour with a local that begins in front of the Parroquia. Learn the history of San Miguel and see numerous landmarks around Centro.
In the mood to shop? The Mercado de las Artesanias stretches from Calle Hidalgo to Mercado Ignacio Ramirez along Calla Lucas Balderas. Choose from silver ítems, blown glass, Talavera ceramics, hand-embroidered clothing and linens, and many other fine art pieces. Hopefully, you brought an extra suitcase!
For more architecture and gallery recommendations around San Miguel, check out our post: Artistic Expressions in San Miguel de Allende
Food and Drink in San Miguel de Allende
Oaxaca may be famous for its mezcal, but the state of Guanajuato is one of the nine states approved to call their liquid concoction of distilled agave juice “mezcal”. We recommend going to San Miguel Mezcaleria. The bartenders know their stuff and you can try different kinds of mezcals like Espadin, Tobala, or Tobaziche. Try all kinds of mezcal at Mezcaleria SMA or take tour to try many other traditional Mexican spirits.
Mexicans are avid beer drinkers. You can find the usual Modelo and Indio (two excellent beers), but also try some of the craft beers from Cerveceria Allende and Dos Aves. Dos Aves is open for tour and tasting. You can try these at Mezcaleria SMA, too.
Food Tours and Splurge Dining
If food is your passion, try this Tacos and Tequila Food Walking Tour . We’ve had several of our own tour guests recommend this tour as it tells you about the history of San Miguel while trying some local places not often mentioned in Tripadvisor or travel magazines. You could also try a cooking class to learn how to make salsas, tamales, or flan. Choose your expert level from salsas and mole to a multi-course dinner with a private chef .
For dinner, I would recommend splurging either at another rooftop location (to get a different view) or at one of the top restaurants like Aperi or Moxi (a restaurant by Enrique Olvera of Pujol) for their delicious tasting menus.
Day 3: Explore Outside San Miguel de Allende
The city of San Miguel is great, but there’s so much more to see! You’ve probably heard that it is not safe in the state of Guanajuato, and there have been some incidences in the southern part of the state near Michoacan. We travel to and around San Miguel on a weekly basis for our wine tours, and we have never seen anything that would cause alarm. Here’s a list of some activities you may want to book ahead, and maybe even extend your stay in San Miguel de Allende.
Spa Day at La Gruta Spa or The Mayan Baths
Did you know San Miguel de Allende has natural hot springs just outside the city limit? After traveling and walking on cobblestones, you may need a day of pampering. Book a reservation at either La Gruta Spa or the Mayan Baths (both are highly recommended) and let the water ease your aching muscles. To make a reservation, you will need to call (or have the concierge of your hotel call), and then take a taxi out to the spa locations. The spa can call a taxi to take you back to your hotel when you are ready to leave.
If you have a nice taxi driver, ask him/her to stop in Atotonilco for 15-20 minutes to see the Sistine Chapel of Mexico. This church has every inch of it covered in frescoes. It’s very impressive.
Day Trip to Dolores Hidalgo
45 minutes northwest of San Miguel de Allende is the pueblo magico of Dolores Hidalgo. This little town is much more laidback than San Miguel and not as busy. You can visit historic museums about Father Hidalgo who shouted the Cry of Independence that started the Mexican War of Independence, the Wine Museum, the mercado, and eat some unique ice cream flavors like ceviche, mezcal, and mole in the main plaza. They have other recognizable flavors, too. You don’t need more than a few hours in Dolores Hidalgo. You can take a taxi to the town, go on a tour to both Dolores Hidalgo and Atotonilco , or combine it with some wineries for a full day of exploration on a Dolores Hidalgo Wine Tour with Heart of Mexico Wine Tours .
Via Organica
If nature is your thing, visit Via Organica to see how local farmers grow crops and make tortillas and tamales. This non-profit organization is working on several projects to promote nutrition and save valuable heirloom varieties. A tour of the farm and lunch are included. This is more than a half day excursion.
Finca Luna Serena- Olive Farm
Smi-arid regions are perfect for growing olive trees. Finca Luna Serena is an olive farm 20 minutes outside of San Miguel de Allende. It was started by an expat couple over 30 years ago, and today they make their own olive oil (and it’s really good!). Take a tour, taste some olive oil, and stay for a meal (breakfast or lunch) made with produce from from their garden and, of course, their own olive oil. Check out their website to see what other events they are hosting like cooking classes and festivals: Finca Luna Serena
El Charco del Ingenio- Botanical Gardens
Spend the morning in nature at El Charco del Ingenio . These botanical gardens feature the native flora of the Central mexico region. Birdwatching is also a popular activity and keep an ear out for the tiny chirps of hummingbirds. You can visit on your own for 50 pesos (less than $3 USD), or take a guided tour in English on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 10am-12pm for 150 pesos ($8 USD).
Canada de la Virgin
Did you know San Miguel has its own pyramid? If ancient history is your thing, then you may want to visit Canada de la Virgin. An archeologist leads tours that can last from 2-4 hours. Be aware that there is no shade out by the pyramids. Wear sunscreen, bring plenty of water, and also an umbrella to make your own shade. Tours start late in the morning, and finish mid-afternoon.
Adventure Activities
Maybe you’re tired of the city and want a little more adventure. San Miguel is surrounded by the Picacho mountains. Zip-line with Parque de Adventura San Miguel over the canyons or a half-day of horseback riding are popular activities to see the countryside.
Maybe you just need a day to relax! San Miguel de Allende is surrounded by boutique wineries with excellent wines and restaurants. Heart of Mexico Wine Tours can take you a Wine Lover’s Tour of San Miguel to the three best wineries for a day of wine and food you’ll absolutely love. These are full-day tours, and you might want to plan for a light dinner afterwards as you get plenty of food (and wine!) on the tour.
The low season in San Miguel de Allende is during July and August when wine harvest festivals take place.
Day 4: what’s left on your list.
Is there anything you missed? Maybe the galleries at La Fabrica de Aurora , an activity out of town, one of the many restaurants or bars that someone said “you have to go here”? What about a hot air balloon ride at sunrise ? Take today to just check off one of the many activities you were planning on. As you can see, there’s plenty to do and it’s tough to cram it all into four days.
Extend your trip to one of these places
Since you are here in the middle of Mexico, why not pair another UNESCO World Heritage Site to your San Miguel de Allende trip? You could spend a day sightseeing, but it would be better to spend a few extra days in one of these two cities:
Guanajuato City
Located an hour from San Miguel de Allende to the west (back towards BJX airport), Guanajuato City is absolutely beautiful and mostly a walkable city. The cars drive through tunnels under the city, so you can wander at your leisure with some esquites (a common snack of corn on the cob cut off into a cup with mayo and chili powder) past beautiful Baroque buildings and shops. Guanajuato City us the birthplace of muralist Diego Rivera . Other museums and sights you may want to check out are the Mummy Museum , Don Quixote Museum , Callejon de Beso , and Teatro Juarez for impromptu musical performances. Book a private guide and transfer to show you the best of Guanajuato City. Read about this magnificent university town in our post Guanajuato City- Travel Guide on What Not to Miss .
Located an hour to the southeast (and back towards the QRO airport) is Queretaro with its soaring pink sandstone aqueduct and 204-block historic Centro. The historical center is 3 times the size of San Miguel. Visit the Museum of the Conspirators or the Calendar Museum for its collection of 1940s political and advertisement calendars, dine at fantastic restaurants, and explore the unique city streets with its European grid-like and indigenous twisting pattern.
There’s also plenty to do outside the city of Queretaro. Visit the cute town of Tequisquiapan and cheese producers to taste local cheese, or hike one of the tallest monoliths in the world, Peña de Bernal. Afterwards, grab some gorditas, micheladas, and cajeta (goat’s milk caramel). Wine lovers will be impressed with the varieties of wine grown in this region including Tempranillo, Malbec, Verdejo and Gewurztraminer. For more information on Queretaro, check out our 4-Day Itinerary for Exploring Queretaro .
Are 4 Days Enough for San Miguel de Allende?
As you can see there’s plenty to do here on a 4-day vacation to San Miguel de Allende, but we encourage you to see more of this beautiful region. This is the real Mexico full of history, wine, and fine dining cuisine. A full week divided between two UNESCO World Heritage Site cities is recommended to really get a feel for the area.
If you feel overwhelmed with planning a trip, contact us to help you plan your 3–8-day trip to Central Mexico . With two airports to choose from and an assortment of boutique hotels, restaurants and activities, you’ll see why so many people fall in love with Mexico and especially San Miguel de Allende.

Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende has been built in homage to the city’s architectural heritage and is located within the District Corazón (the Heart District) in a traffic-free zone in front of Zeferino Gutierrez Park and a quick stroll from the historic center. The well-appointed property showcases the elegance of contemporary Mexican design of the highest style in every room and space. Multicolored, with a Moorish influence, the boutique property will showcase beautiful fabrics, hand-crafted furniture, and exquisite details intended to completely envelop guests and visitors.
“The aim is for our guests to become immersed in the culture of this beautiful location, absorbing and relishing all that San Miguel de Allende has to offer,” said Alberto Coppel, CEO, Pueblo Bonito Resorts. “Each element of this new property has been thoughtfully designed and planned to offer the ultimate guest experience.”
Its hacienda-style buildings will comprise 111 well-appointed guest rooms and suites in one wing and 45 privately owned villas and multi-bedroom condominiums in another. All rooms and residences, designed in a neo-colonial style, will feature terraces with outstanding views of the city’s historic downtown area or the hotel’s lush gardens. Four dedicated wellness suites will also be available with bamboo linens, sleep masks, and other amenities intended for relaxation.
Arquitectura de Interiores and its president, Marisabel Gómez, oversaw this exciting new project. The famed interior designer said, “The beauty of this new hotel is in the details. Our concept and storytelling is that luxury is handmade, much like this exquisite city where Pueblo Bonito Vantage will premiere.”
Visual splendor predominates throughout the property. “Mexican design elements are generally found in the form of artwork, artifacts and textiles,” Gomez explained. “Sumptuous fabrics such as rich velvets, beautiful panels with nail-head details, and lavish area rugs adorn the public spaces.”
When opened, the hotel’s entry hall and spectacular wooden gates will create a “visual layering” effect and a “wow” factor. Guests will see through and beyond the gates to the spires of the city’s magnificent neo-Gothic church, Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, with more than a dozen of the historic city’s domes grouped below it.
The richly appointed guest rooms will be comfortable and sophisticated, with high-tech lighting fixtures and a state-of-the-art Bose sound system. In-room amenities include L´Occitane bath products (Bulgari amenities in suites), plush bathrobes, a luxurious pillow menu, a Nespresso coffee machine, and an electric kettle. Pet-friendly accommodations and a slate of treats for four-legged friends will be available.
The on-site Aromatika Spa will offer lavish holistic care with facials, massages, full-body treatments, single and double treatment rooms, a hydrothermal circuit area, and locker areas for men and women. Other spa facilities include a wellness center, fully equipped gym, beauty salon, bridal suite, and retail shop.
Casa Bistro, the hotel’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner restaurant, will highlight fresh, seasonal ingredients in innovative, ever-changing menus. In the evening, V Rooftop Terrace will serve tapas and drinks, offering panoramic views of the San Miguel Arcángel Parish and the city’s picturesque skyline. LaFrida, the hotel’s gourmet restaurant that pays homage to iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, will provide an unparalleled gastronomic experience, featuring a show in coals and fire and top-shelf wines and cocktails in a stylish environment.
The hotel will have banquet space for groups and a beautiful terrace for weddings and events overlooking the city.
The V Life program will offer a collection of unique experiences in which guests and residents may immerse themselves. Based around four pillars—gastronomy, culture, history, and lifestyle—V Life’s curated activities include language immersion, painting or sculpture classes, cooking classes prefaced by a visit to a local market, guided cultural walks of the city, a visit to a local bee farm, vineyard visits to Guanajuato’s excellent wine region, and many more.
Two regional airports, Leon (BJX) and Querétaro (QRO), serve San Miguel de Allende, approximately 1.5 hours away. The hotel will provide transportation.
