Vice president kamala harris to speak at college of charleston.

Kamala Harris

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will be at the College of Charleston on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023, as part of her Fight for Our Freedoms college tour. The event will be held in the Sottile Theatre and begins at 1 p.m.

“The tour focuses on key issues that disproportionately impact young people across America,” according to a release from the Office of the Vice President of the United States. The release states that the tour touches on issues from reproductive freedom and gun safety to climate action, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality, mental health and book bans.

“This generation is critical to the urgent issues that are at stake right now for our future,” says Vice President Harris. “It is young leaders throughout America who know what the solutions look like and are organizing in their communities to make them a reality. My message to students is clear: We are counting on you, we need you, you are everything.”

College of Charleston students will have the opportunity to ask questions of the vice president.

“The College of Charleston is honored to host Vice President Harris on campus,” says College of Charleston President Andrew T. Hsu . “Vice President Harris’ visit to our university is a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear and see a world leader up close, and provides them a chance to share their thoughts on policies important to them. We thank the White House for selecting the College of Charleston as part of its engagement initiative.”

College of Charleston students need to use this students-only link to register:   RSVP | White House Events .  Students must use their cofc.edu email address for registration. The White House link will close when capacity for the event has been reached. Do not forward this link to non-students.

Students must bring their student IDs to the Wednesday event. Seats will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spoleto Festival Opens Doors for College of Charleston Students

The College of Charleston offers a Spoleto Festival USA course during Maymester.

college tour college of charleston

Imagine homework that consists of attending a world premiere opera about the psychological toll experienced by displaced refugee children, or listening to Grammy Award–winning female jazz musicians captivate the audience under the oaks in the Cistern Yard. Imagine guests artists – including directors, curators and producers – visiting the classroom to share tools and secrets of the trade. All of this is possible in the College’s unique Spoleto Festival USA Maymester class.

“I have taught this course for over 25 years and it remains my favorite course and time of year. Every year is something new and every year I watch how this world-class festival opens some student’s eyes to the power of art.  And I know that will never get old,” says Todd McNerney, professor of performance in the  Department of Theatre and Dance  and associate dean of the  School of the Arts .

Co-taught by Michael O’Brien , professor of music, students get out of the classroom and into festival halls and theatres to immerse themselves in one of the most esteemed festivals across the country. Open to all majors, the Maymester Spoleto course is offered as a humanities elective. Students are required to attend a total of seven live performances ranging from theater and opera to jazz and chamber music.

“As someone who is not an art major, I don’t know if I ever would have been provided such an in-depth experience with a festival of this magnitude if it wasn’t for this class,” says Kenzie Taylor, an undergraduate student at the College of Charleston. “The productions we get to witness and the knowledge we gain from the lectures and interviews are something that will forever change how I perceive art. I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to see so many incredible productions, especially the L.A. Dance Project:  Romeo and Juliet   Suite !”

What’s important in this class isn’t whether students pursue careers in the arts or data programming. What truly matters is that it broadens their horizons and encourages them to appreciate artistic expression in their daily lives—a cornerstone of the College’s enduring dedication to the arts.

This year’s Spoleto festival runs through June 9, 2024. For more information about the festival visit Spoletousa.org .

Business Insider

College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.

  • As spring starts, colleges around the country welcome parents and students to campus for tours.
  • College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
  • They also recommend students take the tour on their own, without their parents.

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the back of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides.

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, class of '25, said.

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the CV

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their resumes at home," Henry Millar, a senior at William & Mary, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible

Some schools offer the option of letting parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University, told BI.

Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward.

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, class of '24 at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT/ACT scores or what they wrote about in their essay.

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead

Parents may be tempted to raise their hand again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the backseat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, class of '25 at Reed College, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up afterward.

8. You may know exactly what school is right, but keep an open mind

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, class of '24 at University of Scranton, said.

9. Take in as much as you can, but remember to have fun

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, class of '24 at Seton Hall University, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"

2024 NCAA baseball tournament bracket: College World Series schedule, dates, regional matchups

The road to the college world series in omaha begins friday.

ncaa-trophy.png

On Monday, the selection committee announced the field of 64 for the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, which we'll unveil in a moment. Before we jump in, you should know that the structure of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is a bit different from the more familiar hoops variant.

Here's what you need to know on that front.

NCAA Baseball Tournament format

  • The first round of play is known as the regional and it's a double-elimination format. Each of the 16 No. 1 seeds hosts its respective four-team regional, when possible. Each of the 16 regionals is seeded one through four. In each region, No. 1 faces No. 4, and No. 2 faces No. 3 on the first day of action. The winners of those two games then play each other, while the losers play an elimination game.
  • The winner of each regional advances to the super regional. The super regional, which includes a total of 16 teams, is a best-of-three series format.
  • The winners of the super regionals -- eight teams in all -- advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • The College World Series is a double-elimination format until the final two teams are left standing. At that point, the slates are wiped clean and it's a best-of-three series to determine the national champion.

NCAA Tournament, College World Series dates

  • Regionals : May 31-June 1
  • Super Regionals : June 6-8 or 7-9
  • College World Series starts : June 14
  • College World Series finals : June 22-24

The field of 64 includes eight national seeds, which you may consider the pre-tourney favorites to reach Omaha. Here are this year's eight national seeds:

  • Texas A&M
  • North Carolina
  • Florida State

If a national seed wins its regional, then it hosts the super regional when possible. Otherwise, the sites of the super regionals will be announced after the regional round concludes. Regional play gets underway on Friday, June 2. Now, here are the matchups for all 16 regionals, plus a reminder that each region is seeded one through four and is hosted by one of the 16 national seeds. You'll note that every top-eight seed this year comes from the SEC or ACC.

Now for the regional matchups that make up the opening round.

Here's a link to NCAA.com's full bracket , which includes region vs. region pairings for the super regionals. Now for some quick hit takeaways on the 64-team field laid out above:

  • It's possible we'll have a repeat this year, as reigning champion LSU is indeed part of the field of 64. College baseball hasn't had a repeat national champion at the Division I level since South Carolina in 2010 and 2011.
  • The SEC this year set an all-time record with 11 tournament teams. Next in line this year is the ACC with eight bids.
  • High Point, Niagara, and Northern Kentucky are all appearing in the Division I tournament for the first time ever.
  • Vanderbilt owns the longest active streak of tournament appearances. This year's bid pushes that streak to 18 straight.

All of the above leads up to the College World Series at Omaha's Charles Schwab Field. So who ya got?
