Analisi Tappe e Percorso Tour Down Under 2024

Anche quest’anno si comincia con il Tour Down Under 2024 . L’apertura stagionale del calendario professionistico maschile sarà quest’anno dal 16 al 21 gennaio con la trasferta australiana che proporrà la prima corsa del calendario WorldTour proponendo un tracciato interessante, con due arrivi in salita che si preannunciano come i momenti chiave di un evento che quest’anno non avrà cronometro. La corsa partirà da Tanunda e si concluderà, come la scorsa stagione, sul Mount Lofty dove scopriremo chi sarà il successore di Jay Vine. Rispetto alla scorsa edizione, altra variazione importante è il ritornoa Willunga Hill , salita storica e spesso decisiva per decidere il vincitore finale. 

Percorso Tour Down Under 2024

Saranno 824,6 i chilometri che i corridori affronteranno nei sei giorni di gara. La prima tappa, di 186 chilometri, vedrà come città di partenza e di arrivo Tanunda . A caratterizzare una giornata che dovrebbe essere per ruote veloci, ci saranno tuttavia tre passaggi su Menglers Hill, salita di 2,1 chilometri repertoriati – ma più lunga nella sua interezza – con pendenza massima del 13,3% che renderà incerta la frazione fino alla fine. Dopo aver scollinato per l’ultima volta a 14 chilometri dal traguardo, il plotone si dirigerà verso il traguardo di Murray Street con dei lunghi rettilinei che favoriranno gli inseguitori.

Ancor più ondulata la seconda tappa, che partirà da Norwood e si svolgerà tra le colline nella zona di Adelaide, con un circuito decisamente nervoso. A speziare il menù di giornata sono tre GPM di seconda categoria, prima Ashton e poi i due passaggi su Fox Creek (seguiti da una terza scalata che non sarà GPM ma che si fa comunque sentire) metteranno stanchezza nelle gambe delle ruote veloci che vorranno giocarsi la frazione che dopo 141,6 chilometri arriverà a Lobethal . Con il traguardo posto ad appena otto chilometri dall’ultima volta in vetta, da non escludere anche l’arrivo di qualche attaccante.

La tappa più lunga della corsa sarà la terza, quando il gruppo affronterà 145,3 chilometri da Tea Tree Gully a Campbelltown . Due facili GPM quello di Tea Tree Gully Hill, dopo appena 2 chilometri di corsa, e Whispering Wall, al chilometro 34,6 di gara, non dovrebbero influenzare la tappa. Negli ultimi 100 chilometri ci potrebbe essere l’insidia del vento su strade ampie e rettilinee che potrebbe condizionare l’arrivo a Gorge Road, ma la giornata sulla carta non dovrebbe creare problemi a nessuno.

Anche la quarta frazione non presenta grandi difficoltà altimetriche. La partenza è prevista da Murray Bridge , dopo oltre 80 chilometri di lunga pianura si salirà verso l’unico GPM di giornata, un terza categoria posto a Gemmell Hill (3,9% pendenza media). A seguire tuttavia una breve fase di falsopiano concede nuovamente spazio alla pianura per arrivare, dopo 136,3 chilometri, sul traguardo di Port Elliot . Qui si assisterà, molto probabilmente, ad una nuova lotta tra i migliori sprinter presenti.

Sabato 20 gennaio si aprirà la due giorni che deciderà la corsa. La partenza della penultima tappa è prevista da Christies Beach , da dove il gruppo prenderà la direzione, affrontando 100 chilometri estremamente pianeggianti ma a ridosso del mare, di Willunga Hill , una salita di 3 chilometri con pendenza massima del 15,6% e media del 7,4%. Dopo il primo scollinamento ci saranno 25 chilometri per respirare prima di affrontare nuovamente la salita, dove stavolta è posto il traguardo di giornata dopo 129,3 chilometri.

I l gran finale, come la scorsa edizione, prenderà il via da Unley per poi giungere dopo 128,2 chilometri sul Mount Lofty , che i corridori dovranno affrontare per tre volte. La tappa sarà subito impegnativa vista la scalata di Windy Point, 3,8 chilometri con 6% di pendenza massima, alla quale seguiranno diversi saliscendi fino al primo passaggio dei tre previsti sul Mount Lofty (salita breve di 1,3 chilometri con pendenza massima del 13,3% e media del 7,3%) posto dopo 70 chilometri. Il circuito finale, composto da una discesa irregolare prima di arrivare ai piedi della scalata successiva, si concluderà così al termine del terzo passaggio sulla salita che nel finale spiana leggermente, ma le cui pendenze sono spesso e volentieri in doppia cifra.

Tour Down Under 2024 si svolgerà  dal 16 al 21 gennaio  e definirà chi sarà il successore di Jay Vine che ha vinto l’edizione post-Covid della corsa australiana. E’ il primo grande appuntamento della stagione 2024 e saranno in molti gli atleti di spicco ad essere presenti al Down Under.

Tour Down Under 2024: il percorso

Come di consueto, la corsa australiana presenterà tappe brevi e non troppo impegnative. Le priume due tappe saranno abbastanza mosse con la tappa di Tanunda che pare comunque adatta ai velocisti. Anche la terza e la quarta saranno adatte agli sprinter mentre l’ edizione 2024 vede il ritorno sulla salita di  Willunga Hill , che verrà affrontata due volte nella quinta frazione. La tappa conclusiva terminerà a Mount Lofty .

Hello and welcome to our live coverage from stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse!

It's the first big high mountain test of the race today with the first-category ascent of Gotthardpass.

Alberto Bettiol is in the race lead after three stages of racing, having placed third yesterday as Thibau Nys came out on top in the stage 3 uphill sprint finish.

We're around half an hour from the start of stage 4.

164 riders finished yesterday's stage with Nairo Quintana the only abandon due to a crash and broken hand .

No further abandons reported yet this morning.

Nairo Quintana's crash came on stage 2, the same day as Emanuel Buchmann crashed out, breaking his collarbone and hip .

We're now underway on stage 4!

Timo Kielich (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was the only non-starter today.

Lots of attacks going at the start here, including the likes of Louis Vervaeke, Jesus Herrada, and Matteo Badilatti.

The riders taking on an early third-category climb at Albipass.

Vervaeke leads the way over the top followed bt Badilatti and Alexey Lutsenko.

Vervaeke now off the front with Soudal-QuickStep teammate Gil Gelders as well as Jayco-AlUla's Felix Engelhardt and Q36.5's Matteo Badilatti.

The attackers are brought back by the peloton.

A larger group now attempting to make a move on the flat ground.

It's a flat run all the way to the final two climbs of the day.

Silvan Dillier, Bryan Coquard, Lilian Calmejane, Michael Matthews among those trying to get away.

The attacking group has around 25 seconds on the peloton currently.

The gap is growing and this could be our break of the day.

Silvan Dillier (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla), Roland Thalmann (Tudor), Jan Sommer (Switzerland), Lilian Calmejane, Gerben Kuypers (Intermarché-Wanty) are in the move.

The peloton has let the eight-man move go and that's our breakaway.

Lidl-Trek are leading the peloton.

Three minutes for the breakaway currently.

There's not much on the route for the next 80km or so.

It's flat all the way to the intermediate sprint at Gotthardstrasse.

After that, the riders head uphill to the second-category climb at Schöllenen (4.5km at 7.5%) and then the first-category finisher at Gotthardpass (8.2km at 6.6%).

4:30 for the breakaway currently.

Coquard is the virtual GC leader at the moment. He lay 1:02 down in 56th place at the start of the day.

Antoine Aebi (Switzerland) is the first rider to abandon the race during today's stage.

Past the halfway mark and there's not much change.

EF Education-EasyPost have joined Lidl-Trek in leading the peloton.

A bike change for race leader Alberto Bettiol, who has had a crash.

The gap is currently at 6:40.

The break of the day.

Around 30km to go until the riders start climbing.

Still 6:50 between the groups.

It's been a very quiet day but we're coming closer to the climbing.

It's still Dillier, Træen, Coquard, Calmejane, Kuypers, Matthews, Thalmann, and Sommer out front.

The breakaway pass through the intermediate sprint with Matthews leading the way ahead of Coquard and Calmejane.

Calmejane tries a move at the front as the riders start climbing.

Skjelmose has a mechanical problem but is back in the peloton quickly.

Sommer and Kuypers dropped from the break.

And now Matthews attacks at the front.

All back together at the front, barring Kuypers and Sommer.

Kuypers has worked his way back to the front.

Six minutes between break and peloton.

That gap coming down more and more as time passes.

The riders heading for the high mountains.

5:30 for the break.

All riders of the break, barring Sommer, still up there.

5:10 for the breakaway riders now.

Q36.5 are leading the peloton at the moment.

EF are lined out behind.

Dillier makes a move up front.

Dillier brings Træen and Thalmann with him.

They have 4:20 now.

Dillier dropped from the lead group.

Rui Costa and Alexey Lutsenko among those dropped from the peloton.

Four minutes for Træen and Thalmann.

Damiano Caruso dropped from the peloton.

The two leaders are over the top of the second-category Schöllenen.

Dillier, Calmejane, Coquard, Matthews, Kuypers all spread out further down, with DIllier at 15 seconds.

The leaders on a flat section after the top of the climb now.

They still have 3:45 ahead of the final climb.

Thalmann and Træen at the head of the race.

Træen gets a bidon from his team car and immediately goes on the attack.

Q36.5 still leading the peloton.

Thalmann can't respond to Træen and it looks like the Norwegian rider could be on his way to victory.

He has a minute on Dillier and 3:35 on the peloton.

Felix Gall and Egan Bernal make a move from the peloton.

Lidl-Trek take it up back in the peloton.

The attackers are caught.

Valentin Paret-Peintre counters as Alberto Bettiol is dropped in the peloton.

They're both up and running after their bikes got tangled up.

Three minutes for Træen.

It looks like Træen has this in the bag.

UAE Team Emirates set it up for an Adam Yates attack.

He makes his move!

The peloton on the climb.

No reaction to Yates' move.

Skjelmose leads the chase.

Yates catches Dillier.

Træen has 1:40 on Yates.

And now Skjelmose attacks from the chase. Almeida goes with him.

Yates passes Thalmann.

Træen now tackling the cobbled road towards the top of the Gotthardpass.

Yates at 1:25 now.

Træen still hanging on in there.

Skjelmose, Almeida, and Bernal are two minutes down. 45 seconds behind Yates and half a minute up on the chase.

Yates gaining time but Træen has got to the top of the climb.

It's a slightly flatter run to the line.

1.5km to go and Træen has just under a minute on Yates.

Skjelmose and Almeida leave Bernal behind at the top.

Yates closing in – 40 seconds now with 1.3km to go.

Behind them, the riders come past the top of the climb in small groups.

Træen hits the final kilometre and he has 33 seconds.

Træen has 18 mountain points today, which will put him in the classification lead.

Now a downhill run towards the finish.

Træen into the final 200 metres.

Yates comes home in second place at 23 seconds down.

Skjelmose leads home Almeida for third place at 48 seconds down.

Bernal is in fifth at a minute behind Træen.

Oscar Onley leads home Enric Mas, Felix Gall, Cian Uijtdebroeks, and Matthew Riccitello at 1:27 down.

Yellow jersey Alberto Bettiol finishes at 3:17.

A win for Bahrain Victorious 362 days after their rider Gino Mäder crashed and died at this race.

It's been just over two years since Træen was diagnosed with testicular cancer, too.

Adam Yates takes over the race lead with 26 seconds in hand over teammate Almeida, with Skjelmose on the same time in third place.

Bernal is fourth at 49 seconds while Wilco Kelderman is fifth at 1:15.

Træen crosses the line to win stage 4.

And Yates on the podium in his new yellow jersey.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center is a Russian training facility responsible for training cosmonauts for their space missions. It is in Star City of Moscow Oblast, a name which may refer to the facility itself or to its grounds. (Read more about Yury Gagarin Cosmonauts training center )

The secret Star City was built to train Soviet cosmonauts, including Yuri Gagarin, the 1st man in space. Many other famous Russian cosmonauts trained here with Gagarin: German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, and Alexei Leonov, the first cosmonaut to exit the spaceship into space . The best facilities were built for them: the world’s largest centrifuge and hydro laboratory.
