How to watch Tour de Suisse live stream 2023 — schedule and start times

1097km long and 18,000 vertical metres over 8 days of pain

Two cyclist corner on a descent in the Tour de Suisse

The last sizeable stage race before 'the big one', the Tour de Suisse offers a final chance for riders to fine tune their race form. After his Covid curtailed Giro, Remco Evenepoel will be keen to make use of the form he so carefully built for the Italian race and take home the win but will face stiff competition from the likes of Tom Pidcock, Juan Ayuso and Romain Bardet.

With the whole race still in shock following the death of Gino Mäder during stage 5 it was understandable that there was little impetus to race stage 7. Three teams left the race overnight along with many other riders too upset to continue, leaving those who signed on to ride tempo until the last climb. Muted hostilities were resumed here and fittingly it was world champion Remco Evenepole who broke away to ride solo to a symbolic and emotional victory, honouring the memory of a life lost too young.

This tragic edition of the Tour de Suisse will conclude with stage 8, the second individual time trial where riders will resume the race for the overall victory, each one carrying the memory of Gino with them, inspiring them to push harder around the 25.7km from St. Gallen to Abtwi.

Other big names lining up to get into the swing of things before the ‘Grande Boucle’ are the irrepressible Wout Van Aert and Eritrean sensation Biniam Girmay. Read on as we explain how to get a 2023 Tour de Suisse live stream and watch UCI WorldTour cycling online and on TV from anywhere today. We also have info on this year’s Tour de Suisse stages and start times below.

Bookended by time trials – the first a 12.7km test around the monastery village of Einsiedeln and the second, on stage 8, a 25.7 km course from St. Gallen to Abtwil – this year's race has attracted top TT talent like Stefan Bissinger and Stefan Küng.

In-between these flat stages, though, these heavier riders will face a whole world of pain as the race covers some of Switzerland’s most feared mountains. With a summit finish on stage 3 up the vicious ascent to Villars-sur-Ollon, the general classification battle will be well and truly taking shape and things only get harder.

Stage 4 is another very lumpy affair but nothing compared to the Queen stage the following day. Stage 5 takes the riders over the legendary Furka Pass, the Oberalp and Albula to gain 4700m altitude over its 211km and it’s likely here is where the race will be won or lost.

Read on for everything you need to know to watch a 2023 Tour de Suisse live stream from anywhere.

Tobias Lund Andresen (DEN)
Pavel Bittner (CZE) Sean Flynn (GBR)
 Chris Hamilton (AUS)
 Gijs Leemreize (NED)
 Oscar Onley (GBR)
 Frank van den Broek (NED)

- Team dsm-firmenich PostNL coach Pim Ligthart: "The Tour de Suisse is really tough this year with six out of the eight stages finishing uphill and two time trials which open and close the race. With Oscar coming back after injury and fresh down from altitude, we will take it day-by-day with him and see what is possible in terms of GC and stage results. Next to Oscar, we have a well balanced team where we have chances in the possible sprint on the second stage and we can also look to go for stage results from the bigger breakaways with the likes of Frank, Gijs and Chris later in the race."

- Soudal Quick-Step roster for the men's 2024 Tour de Suisse:

Ayco Bastiaens (BEL) Gil Gelders (BEL) Yves Lampaert (BEL) William Junior Lecerf (BEL) Fausto Masnada (ITA) Louis Vervaeke (BEL) Jordi Warlop (BEL)

- Soudal Quick-Step sports director Wilfried Peeters: "We are going to this hard race with a nice team who is very motivated and capable of fighting for some good results. We’re curious to find out what William can do in the general classification, but we won’t put any pressure, and instead just take it day by day and see where he ends up in the standings."

- Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) won the men's 2023 Tour de Suisse. Marlen Reusser (SD Worx) won the women's 2023 Tour de Suisse Féminin.

How to Watch the Tour de Suisse—The Hardest Tour de France Tune-Up Race

This mountainous 8-day stage race is the hardest non-grand tour of the season, and one of the sport’s best stage racers—Remco Evenepoel—is using it to start his comeback.

85th tour de suisse 2022 stage 6

The 86th Tour de Suisse starts this Sunday with a 12.7km individual time trial in Einsiedeln to determine the first rider to pull on the yellow jersey as the overall leader of the mountainous 8-day stage race.

85th tour de suisse 2022 stage 3

This year’s Tour de Suisse covers 1097km (680mi) over eight stages. The race opens with Stage 1, a short (12.7km) individual time trial in Einsiedeln that should begin sorting the General Classification. Stage 2 is lumpy, making it the perfect chance for a breakaway to go all the way to the finish in Nottwil–although the sprinters’ teams will do their best to take advantage of one of the few flat finishes in this year’s race.

Stage 3 brings the race into the mountains, with the Category 1 Col des Mosses followed by the race’s first summit finish: the Category 1 climb to Villars-sur-Ollon. Stage 4 starts flat, but ends with three categorized climbs: the Category 1 climb to Crans Montana (which will be familiar to those who watched this year’s Giro d’Italia); the Category 3 climb to Varenstrasse; and the Category 1 climb to the finish in Leukerbad, which summits just before a brief descent followed by a sharp uphill drag to the finish line. By the end of the day, the true contenders will have emerged.

Stage 5 is leg-breaker at 211km, with two major climbs early (including the first hors categorie climb of the race), followed by a long downhill to flat section on the valley road and a second hors categorie climb (the Albulapass) before a fast descent to the finish line in La Punt. Stage 6 is the longest of the race at 216km and starts with a climb back up the Albulapass before a jagged ride to the finish in Oberwil-Lieli, where a short (2.4km) climb to the finish line awaits the riders.

Stage 7 is billed as a day for sprinters, but with another lumpy profile featuring four categorized climbs–the last of which is summited just 20km from the finish line–it’s no wonder that most of the world’s best sprinters have chosen other events for their pre-Tour prep.

85th tour de suisse 2022 stage 6

The race concludes with Stage 8, a 26km individual time trial from St. Gallen to Abtwil that will settle the score one and for all. Any climbers wishing to win the race will need a fairly large advantage (at least a minute) to hold time trialists within sight of the yellow jersey at bay.

How to Watch

A subscription to FloBikes ($150/year or $12.50/month) is the only legal way to stream the race in the USA and Canada, with all eight stages available live and on-demand via FloBikes.com, the FloSports IOS app, and the FloSports app for Amazon FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV. We’ve also been told that a good VPN allows GCN+ subscribers to watch the race with their current subscriptions, but we’ve never given it a try.

What Happened Last Year

Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) won the 2022 Tour de Suisse, giving us a preview of the fitness that helped him finish third overall at the Tour de France a little over a month later. The 2018 Tour de France champion kept himself near the top of the GC, waiting until the final time trial to make him move. He finished second on the final stage to Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel, topping the General Classification by 1:12 over Colombia’s Sergio Higuita and 1:16 over Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang.

Riders to Watch

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—Evenepoel had won two stages and was wearing the maglia rosa as the overall leader of the 2023 Giro d’Italia heading into the race’s first Rest Day; but he tested positive for COVID-19 later that evening and was forced to abandon the race, his biggest goal of the season. After a brief rest he got back on his bike, and is now looking to reboot his season here. Assuming he regained some of the fitness he brought to the Giro , he’s the top favorite–especially with individual time trials book-ending the 8-day event. We’re hoping he dominates, forcing his team to send him to the Tour.

Sergio Higuita (BORA-hansgrohe)—Last year’s runner-up, Higuita is back to try and win the race outright. He’s a talented climber who should thrive when the race hits the mountains , but the race’s two time trials will challenge him. His best bet is to limit his losses to Evenepoel in the time trials, then exploit the Belgian’s time away from the bike in the mountains.

Wout van Aert ( Jumbo-Visma )—Belgium’s Wout van Aert has previously used the Critérium du Dauphiné (which takes a place a week earlier) to put the finishing touches on his form for the Tour de France . But this year he’s heading to the Tour de Suisse, most likely because he’s targeting the world championships in Glasgow–which this year will be held a few weeks after the Tour de France. That said, with two time trials and a few stages with profiles that look perfect for a Classics rider, van Aert should come away with a stage win or two.

Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers)—Great Britain’s Tom Pidock is still trying to figure out what kind of rider he wants to be. Like van Aert and the Netherland’s Mathieu van der Poel , he’s one of the world’s best in a variety of disciplines, having won a world cyclocross championship, the Olympic mountain bike race, and a Tour de France stage to Alpe d’Huez. The Tour de Suisse should give us a chance to see if he has what it takes to lead his team at a major stage race, possibly setting him up to lead INEOS at a grand tour next season.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)—American Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) gets better and better each year. This year he’s already won two races and scored top-10 finishes in some of the spring’s biggest events (like Paris-Nice, Milan-Sanremo, and the Tour of Flanders). He’s likely targeting stages at the Tour de Suisse, but we won’t rule-out a high GC finish for the 26-year-old (he finished fourth last year). Next he’s off to the Tour, where a stage win will be his goal.

Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies)—This is the final season for Slovakia’s Peter Sagan , and it’s fitting that he’s returning to the race that he’s previously used to hone his form for the Tour de France , winning 18 stages over the course of his storied career. He’s not the rider he once was, but with most of the world’s best field sprinters opting for other events, he has a chance to win one more stage here before his retirement .

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty)—One of last year’s revelations, Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay has had a rough season so far, winning only one race–way back on February 1st. But he finished fourth in last weekend’s Brussels Cycling Classic, a sign that his form is heading in the right direction as he prepares for his first Tour de France . Girmay’s perfect for the type of “sprint” finishes in this year’s Tour de Suisse, and a stage victory would give him the confidence he needs heading into his first Tour.

Tour de Suisse 2023 – First Class Field

Now 90 years after its inception the Tour de Suisse is as popular as ever. In the men’s race, the exceptional Belgian cyclist Wout van Aert leads a first class field of riders. The women’s race – with season high-flyer Demi Vollering – is part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour for the first time. And thanks to a lot of time trialling and even more altitude metres, Switzerland is looking strong.

Ten days before the start of the Tour de Suisse, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) points out as an absolute all-rounder on the start list. Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) and the American Neilson Powless (EF Education – Easypost) would also be on the hunt for stage wins. Romain Bardet (Team DSM), Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Jakob Fuglsang (Isreal – Premier Tech) among others, also have their sights set on top results in the overall classification.

Two stages of the men’s Tour will be against the clock: the Tour de Suisse opens with a time trial in Einsiedeln and ends with one in St. Gallen. The two Thurgauer Stefans – Bissegger (EF Education – Easypost) and Küng (Groupama FDJ) – are specialists in this field and are keen to claim the Leader’s Jersey on June 11th. “The course in Einsiedeln suits me. My goal is to be on the top of the podium and to wear the yellow Leader’s Jersey after the race,” says Stefan Bissegger.

Many other Swiss competitors will be putting their best foot forward: “From a Swiss point of view I think Gino Mäder (Bahrain Victorious) or Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) are capable of competing for the overall victory,” says David Loosli, Sports Director of the Tour de Suisse. Mauro Schmid (Soudal Quick-Step), Sébastien Reichenbach and Simon Pellaud (both Tudor Pro Cycling) are also possible candidates for Stage wins.

A Farewell for Peter Sagan and Michael Schär

In its 90th year (86th edition), the Tour de Suisse will bid farewell to two defining figures of the modern era. Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) holds the record of stage wins with 18 to his name. The 33-year-old Slovakian has announced his retirement from road cycling at the end of this season. Michael Schär (37, AG2R Citroen Team) from Lucerne is also riding his last season. The unmissable (1.98m tall) and universally appreciated peloton workhorse is looking forward to his final Tour de Suisse: “As a child I followed the Tour de Suisse from the roadside. Now at the end of my career to be able to ride another stage in my home region around Nottwil is something I’m especially looking forward to.”

Tour de Suisse Women: SD Worx versus the rest

The women’s Tour de Suisse is for the first time in the highest category (UCI Women’s World Tour). So far this season the Dutch team SD Worx is a power to be reckoned with. They already have 32 (!) victories to their credit. Swiss cyclist Marlen Reusser is right in the midst of it all and can look back on a very successful Spring herself. She makes no secret of her ambitions at the Tour de Suisse. “With the long time trial in St. Gallen and no really big mountains in the programme, Marlen has every reason to believe she can do well at the Tour de Suisse Women”, says David Loosli. At the Tour of the Basque Country in mid-May, Reusser proved that she can also compete for the overall victory in a Tour. In addition, team-mate and season dominator Demi Vollering, who calls the Basel region home, is considered a frontrunner for the overall victory.

The remaining teams will do everything they can to break the dominance of SD Worx. Possible candidates for this challenge are Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing), Liane Lippert (Movistar Team Women), Gaia Realini (Trek – Segafredo) oder Marta Bastianelli (UAE Team ADQ).

Swiss Cyclists with an Outside Chance

Of course other Swiss cyclists will also try to make the best of the home ground advantage, be it in a breakaway or perhaps a Stage win. Current Swiss Road Champion Caroline Baur (Israel Premier Tech Roland): “It will definitely be a special feeling to ride the Tour de Suisse Women in the Swiss Champion jersey, especially as it takes place in my training area. I’m looking forward to my home race and will certainly be on hand to support our climbers in their efforts to achieve a top result.”

Despite the absence of the National Team, other ambitious Swiss competitors, for example Elise Chabbey (Canyon//SRAM Racing), Lea Fuchs (Born to Win – Zhiraf – G20) and Petra Stiasny (Fenix-Deceuninck) will be lining up at the start.

The final start lists for both races will be posted at  https://www.tourdesuisse.ch/en/  the evening before the respective race begins.

A Competitive Route

In the men’s Tour de Suisse, the Queens Stage on June 15th from Fiesch to La Punt with the Furka, Oberalp and Albula passes will be a highlight. The Pros have to conquer more than 4,700 metres of altitude. In addition, they will already have two tough mountain finishes in Villars-sur-Ollon and Leukerbad in their legs. “As expected the Tour de Suisse features a lot of altitude gain. This year, with the two time trials on 11th June in Einsiedeln and 18th June in St. Gallen, the Rouleurs will also be in demand,” says the Sports Director, David Loosli.

In the women’s race, after the opening circuit stage, there will also be a battle against the clock on Stage Two. After that, the women will also sample Switzerland’s mountainous topography. David Loosli says: “During stages three and four, the climbing specialists are in their element. On the way to Ebnat-Kappel on the third day and on the circuit in the same region on the fourth day, there are many sharp climbs that are ideal for attacks”.

Each day, the last two hours of the men’s race and 90 minutes of the women’s race will be broadcast live on television both nationally (SRF, RTS, RSI) and internationally (Eurosport and others).

With no Tadej Pogačar on the start sheet as he prepares at altitude and no Jonas Vingegaard as he continues to recover from injury the role of favourite rests on the shoulders of 2023 winner Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl - Trek). Although he's had a quiet season he will be keen to repeat last year's breakthrough victory in the Swiss Alps and reconfirm his place at cycling's top table.

Going up against him with be the three pronged attack of Tom Pidcock, Egan Bernal and Jhonatan Narvaez of the INEOS Grenadiers with all eyes on Pidcock especially as he starts his serious attempt to be a stage race winner. Groupama - FDJ will be headed up by the young sensation Lenny Martinez and Israel - Premier Tech by the winner of this year's Fleche Wallonne , Stephen Williams.

Of those here to hunt stages and not chase overall victory look out for the likes of Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain - Victorious) and the local hero Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates).

Stage two did indeed come down to a bunch sprint, but only just. A frenetic final few kilometres saw a multitude of attacks on the run in to Regensdorf whith rider after rider hoping to break clear. In the end what was left of the peloton grouped together and emerging from the chaos is was Bryan Coquard ( Cofidis ) who took the win.

Stage three from Steinmaur to Rüschlikon is another chance for the sprinters but the hills towards the end may just provide a launch pad for an escape.

Tour de Suisse 2024 stages

The 2024 Tour de Suisse kicks off with a 4.8km prologue in the town of Vaduz to implement a GC order right from day one. After this brief yet intense beginning the following day sees the riders face a lumpy 177 kilometre journey from Vaduz to Regensdorf which although featuring three classified climbs is more then likely to finish in a bunch sprint.

Those sprinters who miss out on stage two will have another chance on stage three at the finish in Rüschlikon, but with multiple short sharp ascents in the final kilometres they could be foiled by a late break away.

Stage four is where the real action starts with the race finishing at the top of the world famous Gotthardpass. With almost 30 kilometres uphill the teams of the favourites will have to make sure their leaders are well placed to make their mark at the summit.

Stage five from Ambri to Cari features the second summit finish in two days with an even more testing finish than the day before, then stage six sees the first HC climb of the race. The 151 kilometres from Locarno to Blatten are dominated by the colossal Nufenenpass, but coming 60 kilometres from the end can it be decisive?

Yet more mountains and yet another summit finish are on the cards on stage seven around Villars-sur-Ollon as the race crosses the same two mountains twice on a giant loop in and out of the town.

The final stage like the first is a time trial. This time a longer test at 15.7 kilometres anyone hoping to gain time will have one last chance.

Hello and welcome to the Cyclingnews live coverage of stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse.

We'll have all the action from the 191km stage from Grenchen to Brunnen.

The stage starts outside the velodrome today

Here's Peter Sagan winning stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse

Here are the Ineos Grenadiers team at the signing on. The peloton are about to roll out of the neutralised section in less than ten minutes

Suisse stage 4

The riders are moving off from the depart fictif . Four none-starters: Frederick Wandahl (Bora-Hansgrohe); Kasper Asgreen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl); Jay Vine (Alpecin-Fenix) and Jan Maas (BikeExchange-Jayco).

Stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse, 190.8 kilometres from Grenchen to Brunnen  is officially underway. 144 riders still in the race.

It's a fast start with numerous attacks and a few riders have punctured including former Tour de Suisse multiple winner Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates). Not a time when you want a puncture.

These are the standings from stage 3. Rui Costa, meanwhile, has had a bike change.

Still no breakaway and the first climb of the day, the third category Kappelen, is fast looming on the horizon.

Update from Alpecin-Fenix on why Jay Vine had to quit the Tour de Suisse

🇨🇭 #TourdeSuisse2022 ❌ @JayVine3 has been forced to retire from the @tds due to maladaptation to the heat, resulting in dehydration despite max. application of hydration plans. It was no longer medically justified to have him continue the race. We wish him a speedy recovery. pic.twitter.com/EfQIShMvay June 15, 2022

Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal), Markus Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo) and Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix) steal a march on the peloton and rapidly build up a respectable margin of 1-30.

We're on the fourth straight  hilly stage of the Tour de Suisse, and this one features the bones of 2,000 metres of vertical climbing. The three man break are already at the foot of the first of two categorized ascents, the Kol de Kappelen, a three kilometre third category effort at a relatively benign 5.5 percent. Relatively.

And as the three man break reaches the summit of the Capellen the temperatures continue to rise on yet another warm, dry day and their gap opens up to over five minutes. Bahrain Victorious and Ineos Grenadiers lead the chase. Holmes is the best placed of the three on GC at just over 10 minutes.

Over the summit of the Kapellen, Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal) claims top points on offer, Mark Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo) is second, Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix) third. The bunch now a fraction under 5 minutes behind.

And here we have one of the first photos of the day of our trio of breakaways: Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal), Mark Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo) and Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix).

The race has come off a fast-ish descent from the third category Kapellen, and the break of three has 4-46 on a peloton where Movistar have taken over from Ineos Grenadiers in a working alliance with Bahrain Victorious, who (let's not forget) lead the race with young British pro. Stevie Williams, to keep the move under control.

EF Education-EasyPost join the hunt of the three riders ahead, and the gap on the break is beginning to shrink. Almost 5 minutes when the race came off the Kapellen climb, it's now standing at just over 4.

After a blisteringly fast start (47.6 kmh average in the first hour), the race now faces the best part of 100 kilometres of rolling Swiss countryside. Meantime, Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux), one of the multiple crash victims on Tuesday, is reported to be struggling.

All the remaining setpiece flashpoints for the stage feature late on in today's 190 kilometre stage. That's a hot spot sprint at Vitnau at km 144;  another sprint at Bergstrasse at km 166;  and then the main climbing challenge of the day, the second category Sattel at km 175.8, its summit at less than 15 kilometres to go.

And as the thermometer inches towards a warm 30 degrees out there in the Swiss countryside, the bunch are making inroads on the three riders' advantage, with the gap ebbing to just over 3 minutes.

While today's racing unfolds, there's plenty to read on the Cycingnews site regarding the Tour de Suisse overall. Hot off the virtual press is this article on how yesterday's 18th TdS stage win of his career for Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) represents a shot across the bows of his rivals in the upcoming Tour de France. Peter Sagan's Tour de Suisse victory a signal of intent for Tour de France

Meanwhile elsewhere in central Europe,  following his sadly truncated Ardennes Classics campaign, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) makes his return to racing  on home soil at the Tour of Slovenia today. Interest in how Pogačar, the defending champion at Slovenia, will fare in the five-day stage race is high, for reasons too obvious to mention, but arguably the biggest one from an international point of view is that Slovenia is his last race before the Tour de France. We'll be bringing you a full race report and news update from there when the stage ends later today, of course, but meantime my colleague Barry Ryan has produced this great preview of Pogačar's return to the Tour of Slovenia here.

And still it drops. As we reach the 100 kilometres to go marker, the gap on our breakaway trio of the day, Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal), Mark Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo), Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix), is now down to 2-45.

Crash in the bunch. Riders from QuickStep-AlphaVinyl, Trek-Segafredo are reportedly down while BikeExchange-Jayco's Damien Howsen needs a wheel change.

James Knox (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) is reported to be one of the riders involved in the crash, the gap on the break is now to 2-17

James Knox (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) is now back in the bunch following the crash affecting several riders. As is  his compatriot Luke Rowe (Ineos Grenadiers) after a puncture. The gap between the bunch and the three ahead, incidentally, has now stabilized at just under 2 minutes.

Thymen Arensman (DSM) is reported to have abandoned. He was lying 40th overall.

Having just completed the Giro d'Italia, Arensman has reportedly being suffering from dehydration today in this hot weather. It's roughly 30 degrees out there.

#TourdeSuisse 🇨🇭 - 🏁 78 kmDNF 🇳🇱 Arensman! Communication from the team says he’s suffering a lot from the heat and dehydration. #DomestiqueLive June 15, 2022

The gap on our three breakaways, Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal), Mark Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo) and Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix) continues to shrink remorselessly. Now down to 1-37.

Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo), currently heading the King of the Mountains classification in this year's Tour de Suisse, has a mechanical. The gap on the break continues to dwindle very gently, and is now down to 1-20.

Some beautiful scenery today on the Tour de Suisse, currently heading east through the centre of the country to finish at the town of Brunnen.

Suisse

And as the race winds its way alongside a lake, the bunch give the three ahead - longstanding breakaway Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal), Mark Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo), Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix) -  a sort of reprieve and the gap rises to nearly 2 minutes again.

Holmes takes the hot spot sprint at Vitznau, 48 kilometres from the finish in Brunnen, ahead of Hoelgard and Janssens. No time bonuses for the GC contenders, then. Gap at 1-48.

Just a reminder what's left to go. There's another sprint in the town of Bergstrasse at km 166,  and then the main climbing challenge of the day, the second category Sattel at km 175.8, around 14 kilometres to go. The Sattel is only 3 kilometres long but an average gradient of 8.5 percent is hardly gentle. Then in a very similar finish to stage 2, where Andreas Leknessund (DSM) won on Tuesday with a late solo break, after the second cat summit, there's a fast drop down to the finish town of Brunnen.

40 kilometres to go, and the gap is still hovering stubbornly around 1-35. That's after a breakaway that's been out there for around 140 kilometres.

The prospect of the bunch pulling back the break before the second and final intermediate sprint, at Bergstrasse some 24 kilometres from the finish is shrinking fast. 7 kilometres beforehand, the three breakaways continue to lead by 1-24, for all Movistar, Cofidis and Bahrain Victorious have upped the pace notably in the pack.

A marked acceleration by Jumbo-Visma in the pack reduces the break's advantage to 1-08, but even so at the second hot spot sprint, Holmes once again takes the first place, with Janssens in second and Hoelgaard third.

Next up on the stage 4 Tour de Suisse menu is the second category Sattel, its summit just 14 kilometres from the finish. Meantime the gap held by the break is plummeting and now stands at a scant 40 seconds.

Ineos Grenadiers up the pace notably behind as the foot of the climb approaches. The gap is now less than 25 seconds.

The last in-race official cars speed past the trio of breakaways. Seems like the end is nigh.

As the road steepens on the second category Sattel, a Groupama-FDJ, Israel Premier Tech and Movistar-led peloton rounds a left-hand bend and bears down on Holmes and Janssen, the last two survivors from the break.

Holmes, the last man standing is caught and the bunch is steadily shedding units at the back. A moment of hesitation, but surely somebody will push on.

And there's a spirited little dig by Gianluca Brambilla (Trek-Segafredo) on the steadily rising, well-surfaced road, but the peloton comes back up to the Italian and he's quickly re-absorbed.

About a kilometre-and-a-half to go and while there's an uneasy truce after Brambilla's brief move, at the back the bunch is losing large numbers of bodies.

Another brief sally, this time from local boy Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) but this isn't working. Behind, Williams, the overall leader since stage 1, is in difficulties.

Britain's Hugh Carthy (EF Education-Easypost) leads through the 15-to-go banner but after a steepish start  the road is undulating now and Sebastian Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ) lopes away.

Reichenbach leads but with a minimal margin on the EF Education-EasyPost led peloton of some 30 riders. Meantime  race leader Williams has got back on after his moment of difficulty and is moving up through the bunch fast.

We're well onto the smooth, sinuous descent of the Sattel now and while Reichenbach still leads by about 5 seconds, he may well have a problem making his move stick.

Reichenbach is pulled back into the peloton. He led over the summit of the Sutter though, followed by Hugh Carthy and a promising-looking Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).

Speeds hitting around 80 kmh for the lead bunch of around 50 riders, still led by EF-Education First on the fast descent.

Bunch is still together on a fast, steady descent.

A bit of road furniture to negotiate, but EF Education-EasyPost still lead the bunch.

The road finally flattens out as the race heads towards the finale and we're heading for a bunch sprint.

Broad, A-roads for now for the peloton with a few drags like one they just tackled over a railway bridge still stringing out the bunch.

Last kilometre, EF still leading but the whole bunch is poised to accelerate as the road narrows.

Long sprint with Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) just holding off the opposition to win.

Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) wins stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse, ahead of Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Soren Kragh Andersen (DSM ).

EF Education-Easy Post had set things up nicely for Alberto Bettiol after leading the pack all the way over the Sutter climb and down to the finish, but Impey, Matthews and Kragh Andersen all stormed past him in the final metres, leaving Bettiol in fourth.

Stephen Williams (Bahrain Victorious) remains in the lead for a fourth day despite a wobble on the second category climb of the Sutter late on. Overall Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) leapfrogs over Andreas Leknessund (DSM) into third, but only as a result of better placings. They're still tied on time at 7 seconds.

And here's a picture of Impey on the point of winning stage 4

Suisse s4

This is Impey's first win since the South African took the 2020 National Road Title and is Israel-Premier Tech's second WorldTour victory this season after Paddy Bevin won a stage of the Tour de Romandie. In terms of Israel-Premier Tech's fight to amass enough points to stay in the WorldTour in 2023, this win is more than welcome, too, for the team.

No changes in any of the secondary classifications after stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse. Stage 2 winner Andreas Leknessund (DSM) remains in charge of the points jersey, Quinn SImmons (Trek-Segafredo) is on top of the KoM ranking, Andreas Kron (Lotto-Soudal) in the same spot on the BYR and Bora-Hansgrohe rule the roost in the teams ranking.

And here's what stage 4 winner Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) had to say. Impey, it should be remembered, had a very bad crash in the last stage last year's Ruta del Sol, breaking his pelvis and collarbone and spending 9 weeks off the bike. "I’m ecstatic. It was a tough day.The competition is so good these days with the young guys, and after everything that happened last year, I didn’t know if I was going to get back on top of the step." "To finally pull off a victory after all of the hard times is special. I had great support from the team and from my family at home. I’m really happy to win."

And now for a brief look at what's upcoming on Thursday's stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, 189 kilometres long and running from Ambri to Novazzano. Held almost entirely in the Italian-speaking south of Switzerland,  on a day with nearly 3,000 metres of vertical climbing,  stage 5 finishes at one of the most southerly points of the country, just a few kilometres from neighbouring Italy. Featuring numerous unclassified ascents, as well as a third category climb less than ten kilometres from the finish, the odds of even a reduced bunch sprint, like the one which decided stage 4 on Wednesday, seem minimal.

And here is a link to the full report and results of the day by Stephen Farrand Tour de Suisse: Daryl Impey wins stage 4

And here's a few more pictures of stage 4 winner Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) and race leader Stephen Williams (Bahrain Victorious) to end the day's reporting.

Thanks for joining us for the day's reporting, we'll be back on Thursday with more live race action from the Tour de Suisse
