After the welcome dinner, we will meet our tour guide for an evening tour of Jaffa, the oldest port city in the world. Here you will see St. Peter's Church and enjoy a view of the Tel Aviv Shoreline from Jaffa’s Hilltop.

• Stand on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and reflect on the Lord's ascension into heaven. Pass by Pater Noster Church and Dominus Flevit.
• Take the Palm Sunday Road to the Garden of Gethsemane.
• Explore the Old City of Jerusalem via the Dung Gate.
• Visit The Davidson Center Museum and the Southern Temple Mount archaeological excavations.
• Visit the Western Wall also known as the Wailing Wall and surrounding Plaza in the Jewish quarter, including Robinson's Arch.
• Visit the Tomb of King David and the Upper Room on Mt. Zion.
• End the day with a visit to St. Peter of Galicantu commemorating Christ's prophesy that Peter would deny him three times before the cock crows. Galli-cantu means cockcrow in Latin.
• Enter the Christian Quarter of the Old City via the Lion's Gate and walk along the Via Dolorosa, also known as the Stations of the Cross, which is the route that Jesus walked from the prison to the crucifixion.

I had a fabulous trip to Israel going on the Roots of Your Faith tour. Life changing and so amazing. Yeshay, also known as Jessie, my tour guide, was so knowledgeable, organized, funny, and kind. He was very attentive to everyone on the tour. I learned so much from him about life in Israel, its people, culture, and most importantly all of the significant biblical history at each holy site we visited. Aaron, our driver, was charming, jovial, and professional to make sure he got everyone to each destination with ease. An AMAZING experience from start to finish with AIT! I booked the Roots of our Faith tour to travel with my Father since Israel was on the top of his list to see in life. It turned out to be the most memorable trip of our lives for both of us!! Our tour guide Barak Berkovich was beyond phenomenal!! We are so incredibly fortunate to have had a guide so unbelievably knowledgeable, with a great sense of humor, along with possessing the rare ability to make us feel safe and secure the entire time! I have traveled extensively around the world, taking many tours, and I have never had a better guide than Barak! He was absolutely captivating (even after our 8-10 hour days of sightseeing) he kept us wanting to see and hear more!! If you are considering traveling to Israel, dont wait! Call them to book today! The process was flawless. Skyler in booking took care of every detail for us, including flight suggestions that worked out perfectly. Roots of Your Faith Nov 2022

Our tour guide, Bruce, was wonderful, very knowledgeable and helpful. Hearing about the Biblical events from a Jewish perspective was enlightening for me. This tour was a whirlwind of sights and history for a solid week, but I highly recommend it.

The trip was worth the wait after Covid. Skylar & Regan from AIT answered all questions & sent pertinent paperwork as needed to get us started on a memorable journey. The first week is the Roots tour with Jordan as an extension. Forty-one started with 18 going on to Jordan. If you get Yair as a tour guide in Israel, you are getting the best guide. Not only is he knowledgeable & very personable, but also funny making each stop memorable. Menahem, the bus driver, uses his driving skills in difficult situations. If women had short sleeve tops, a shawl was not necessary, but definitely needed for sleeveless tops. No need to change dollars which were accepted when credit cards couldn't be used. Have plenty of $1 bills especially for water which was sold everywhere. Crossing the border to Jordan for 2 extra nights was definitely worthwhile. Jerash ruins show a huge ancient city, but Petra is a true wonder of the world. There is a lot of walking, sometimes on uneven surfaces & uphill. An electric cart (for a fee) can be taken between the Visitors Center & the Treasury if you are unable to walk long distances. You can ride a horse part way which is included in the ticket price, but the handler will expect a tip. Once reaching the Treasury, a very short camel ride can be taken (about $5). Our guide Saleh was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. This trip not only enriched my faith as so many others have said, but I got to see different cultures and met a lot of great people.

Only day three of our Roots of Your Faith tour with Jordon and Egypt extension and AIT has provided service beyond expectations. As we travel the remainder of our nearly three week trip I am confident the experience will continue to be exceptional. Yair, our tour guide, is knowledgeable not only of the historic perspective but also biblically and delivers the information with clarity.

We booked our 10 Day "Roots of Your Faith " with AIT Since 2020. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, we could not travel. We finally got cleared and traveled at end of August! AIT staff especially Skyler and Raegan always communicated with us and kept us informed about everything that was happening! Words cannot express our experience because it was that amazing. Well planned and executed in all apsects. Great hotels, sightseeing opportunities and great local spots to visit. Our tour guide Yoram was very knowledgable, passionate and lead us on our journey from day 1. We got to see so many of the Holy Sights and learned so much during our trip. I would definitely recommend this company and travel with them again!

Recently returned from an AIT “Roots of Your Faith” tour with visits to both sides of the Jordan. WOW! It was amazing! Both the California and Israeli based administrative teams who planned and organized the trip did so with precision and made our way comfortable and easy. We wanted to see “everything” and we did. Yair, our tour guide in Israel, made historical sites and Biblical events come alive with his knowledge, insight and presentation; and he did so in a way that faded the hectic atmosphere of some crowded sites. Our guide in Bethlehem and Emdad in Jordan enhanced our visits as well. The accommodations and hospitality at our hotels and dining rooms was excellent, particularly in Jerusalem and in Aman. Would I go with AIT again? Absolutely, in a heartbeat!

Early November is a fabulous time to visit Israel with the wonderful AIT crew. They looked after us the whole way through. They don’t talk up the Isrotel Hotel at the Dead Sea enough. That has to be the finest hotel on the water. It’s 5 stars by any standard! The peace and the beauty of the land is surprising... from the news you’d think this place is going to kick off at any moment. Our experience has been fantastic so far. If you’ve not been to Israel... you are missing a unique corner of the world... Come to Israel!!!

My husband & I have been enjoying our first visit to Israel on the America Israel Tour (AIT) company's "Roots of your Faith” tour. It has been a surprise to see so many other tours operating at the same time, and of course, all wanting to visit the same sites. We believe what make our tour special is our guide: Yoram Black. He has been professional, knowledgeable, accommodating, efficient, analytical, thoughtful and courteous. We have been on other tours in other countries and Yoram seems to be the hardest working and most prepared guide we have had the pleasure of touring with. I don’t know if it is Yoram or AIT that coordinates the timing of each day, but our itinerary seems to help us avoid the worst of the crowds. Watch, listen, and enjoy a personal greeting from Israel from Dr. John DeLancey, Director of BIMT . This brief three minute greeting was recently recorded at the lower level of the northern palace of Herod the Great at Masada (Hebrew  metzada,  or “fortress” – Psalm 18:1-2).

We hope this word of greeting gives you a good sense of the types of Israel trips and the in-depth teaching we offer. We  love  unfolding the context of the Bible for you in a way that brings the Bible  alive ! Thanks and blessings for visiting us today! To date, Dr. John has led 88  Israel tours in addition to his one year of study as an archaeology and historical geography student at JUC in Jerusalem in 1981-82. He has also led  15  Greece & Turkey and countless other trip extensions to Jordan and Egypt. He has excavated at 7 archaeological sites in Israel to date. One way for us to bring “Israel” to churches around the country is through our “ Bringing the Bible to Life”  ( BBL )  seminars! This seminar includes about 7.5 hours of unique biblical teaching. Our aim is to bring the Bible to life through the teaching of the  physical settings  of the Bible. We do this through teaching biblical archaeology, historical geography, the Hebraic background of the life & ministry of Jesus, and the customs & culture of the Bible. NEW: We are now offering a second weekend seminar: “The Life of Christ in Context.” Ask Dr. John for further details!

A Discipleship Encounter

The BBL seminar includes seven power point presentations, aerial / drone videos and footage, and detailed teaching that will help you “ connect the dots ” between the many stories from the Bible and the land. Specifically, the Bible will be opened in “3-D color,” including the history and stories of the OT to the life of Jesus! While the seminar is geared towards helping you understand what we like to call the “playing board” (the “land”) of the Bible, there are also many life-lessons and spiritual formational applications to be gleaned! Other than picking up the transportation cost (airfare or mileage in a car) for Dr. DeLancey to your church or conference, and taking up a free-will offering for BIMT, there are no other costs for hosting a seminar! Free On-line “Trip Preparation” Course

We are pleased to share Pre-trip Zoom session (about 1.5 hours) of on-line teaching to help you prepare for the your trip. This will be through the Zoom video platform . Dr. DeLancey will personally teach this class and walk you through a series of helpful trip and travel suggestions and many of the biblical connections  in advance  of your trip. These will be offered about 4 weeks prior to your tour. We cover trip suggestions as well as biblical connections. We want you to be prepared for a trip that is filled with countless biblical connections and heart-transforming experiences!

Meet our Director & Primary Tour Leader/Teacher

Rev. Dr. John DeLancey serves as the  Director  of  BIMT.  Dr. John studied in Jerusalem as an archaeology & historical geography student for one year (1981-82), pastored for 26 years (churches in MN & PA), excavated at 7 archaeological sites (City of David, Kh. Nysia, Abel Beit Maacah, Gezer, Gath, Tel Burnah/Libnah, and Dan), and to date has lead 88  Israel trips (and many dozens of these included extensions to Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, and Italy). He brings a unique wealth of knowledge and experience to every trip he leads. He has also led 15  separate Greece & Turkey “ Footsteps of Paul ” trips.

Pastor John writes his own itineraries for all his trips. They are not cookie-cutter  and touristy  trips like 90% + Israel tours! His passion is to teach the Bible in the context of the land of Israel and to lead people to a life-transforming faith experience! His expertise is  historical  geography  and  biblical archaeology  of Israel! He will take you to places not visited by most groups. He will share up-to-date information and many biblical connections at each site. Each day will be like a “Bible study” in 3-D color, with the biblical narratives from both the OT and NT coming to life in real ways!

Dr. DeLancey is married (Sue) and they have three children and three grandchildren. They also have two golden retrievers and five cats. He has enjoyed 30 years of ultra-marathon trail running, biking, and kayaking. He has authored two books:  Devotional Treasures from the Holyland  and  Connecting the Dots Between the Bible and the Land of Israel.

Summertime is a great time

If you have already come to the Holy Land, you did it probably between October and May. Yes, most of the groups and individual pilgrims and tourists come here in this period. The main reason is the weather. If you come from Europe or from the North America, your visit to Israel and Palestine during the winter will be a nice change – from grey winter mood and frost to sunshine and pleasant temperaatures.

Well, it is true. However you can find yourself covered with snow even in Jerusalem and Bethlehem!

Many people say: “I am not planning to come to the Holy Land in the summer, because it is too hot there”. That is why June, July, and August are the low season here. But if you decide to plan you pilgrimage for the summer months, you will soon realize, that it is not at all a bad idea!

First of all, the temperatures are not really higher than in Greece, Italy, or Spain. In fact, you feel better here, because of lower humidity. Especially the holy cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, that are located on relatively high altitude (approx. 850 m / 2780 ft above the sea level). This location offers you hot days and fresh and cool evenings and nights.

Another factor is the number of pilgrims. If you come here in summer, you will not be surrounded by crowds. You will not lose your time waiting in long lines to visit the holy places.

Last but not least, our partner hotels offer lower prices for the summer months. So you can get a better price for your group.

Summer is a very convenient period for visiting the Holy Land. Just remember to drink a lot of water, put a hat on your head, and use the sun screen. For the rest, we will take care of you!

Entry to Israel for non-Israeli citizens

As of 3.6.2022 – Please check the current rules on the official website of the Israeli Government

You may complete the entry form to Israel 10 days prior to the departure date of a flight to Israel, a cruise to Israel or land border crossing to Israel.

It is not required to present a negative result on a COVID-19 test before boarding a flight to Israel, a cruise to Israel or before arriving to Israel at a land border crossing. The PCR testing mandate for those entering Israel at airports and maritime and land border crossings was lifted, and the isolation required until that test result was also canceled. Confirmed COVID cases will not be permitted to board a flight to Israel. If you were confirmed with COVID and have not yet recovered according to the required protocol in Israel and in the state from which the flight departs – do not board the flight.

Entering Israel

• A health insurance policy with coverage for the treatment of COVID-19 is required. The insurance policy is a mandatory to enter Israel.
• Fill out the entry form to Israel during the 10 days prior your flight to Israel.

Isolation Currently there is no legal requirement of isolation after entering Israel.

If a non-Israeli citizen contracts COVID while in Israel, they should follow the guidance for non-Israelis regarding isolation.

Tourism Returning to Israel?

After many month of sadness, grief, and incertitude, we have just received the following message. It gives us a new hope for the future! We pray that it may become true, so tat we may meet you all soon in the Holy Land!

Israeli authorities have begun early planning toward the resumption of incoming tourism to Israel by Mid December 2020. The information we can share with you today is a bright point of hope following eight months of severe travel restriction. Please remember that these points reflect only the early planning stages, and future travel easing will have to be approved by the appropriate authorities before full implementation is announced.

• Together with the opening of Israeli hotels on December 15, 2020, the government is considering allowing the entrance of tour groups from “green nations.”
• Groups (of no more than 30 participants) have to be pre-authorized by the Ministry of Immigration and Health Ministry.
• All group members must carry a valid Health Insurance Policy that includes Coronavirus treatment.
• All group members must carry proof of a negative PCR test result.
• Each group will be assigned their dedicated Guide and Driver who will stay with the group full time from arrival to departure. The Guide and Driver will be PCR tested before the group’s arrival, and will not return to their homes until the group’s departure.
• During the tour, the group will remain in a “capsule mode” during site seeing and shopping, while using only their designated bus and assigned seating area in the dining halls or restaurants.
• Pre-approval information that will be submitted to the Israeli authorities will include: Travelers’ information, Foreign Agent’s information, Israeli Agent’s information, and contact person per group, proof of Health Insurance, Detailed itinerary, including hotels and site visits and Names of dedicated Guide and Driver. Again, these are GOOD NEWS indeed, and we will continue to update you as the new rules firm up and as specific guidelines are finalized. Please do not hesitate to call our office with any questions you might have as we are standing by to assist you to make plans for your future groups to Israel.

Mount Tabor

On the 6th of August the Catholics celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The place of the Transfiguration is traditionally located on the Mount Tabor.

The localization of the Transfiguration fluctuated at the beginning of the Byzantine period. Eusebius (d. 340) hesitates between Tabor and Mount Hermon, while the Pilgrim of Bordeaux (333) places it on the Mount of Olives. In 348 Cyril of Jerusalem decided on Tabor, and the support of Epiphanius and Jerome established the tradition firmly. The date of the first religious constructions is uncertain. The anonymous pilgrim of Piacenza saw three basilicas in 570. Willibaldus in 723, on the contrary, mentions only one church dedicated to Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. The contradiction disappears if we assume three chapels architecturally linked, as in the present building. Three canonical Gospels give us an account about the event. Let us read the text written by Saint Luke:

Luke, chapter 9: 28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. New Revised Standard Version

We all suffer because of the global pandemic. All the travels had been cancelled. We have stayed at home. The streets of our cities and villages became empty.

The Holy Places were closed for many weeks as well. The Nativity Grotto in Bethlehem and the Holy Tomb in Jerusalem were not accessible for the faithful. Only the priests and monks who lived in the shrines continued to celebrate their liturgies.

These days many churches in the Holy Land are open, but only a handful of people come to pray there. The empty Tomb of Jesus is really empty, which is an unusual view for our pilgrims, who saw it full of multilingual crowds.

We pray that we may see you all soon in the shrines of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Galilee. We wait for you!

Are there opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship during the tours?

Yes, there will be opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship during our Christian tours. You’ll get to visit and learn about sites that played a key role in the stories of the Bible and Christian history. These experiences also give you a chance to learn more about the world and the different cultures that have shaped it.

What type of accommodations can I expect during the tours?

Most of the tours we offer are all-inclusive, which means airfare, lodging, and most meals are included in the price of your tour. This includes everything from Ireland tours to cruises and tours of Alaska. You can find individual itineraries and tour details for each of our tour packages on our website, and you can contact us if you have any questions.

What safety measures are in place for travelers?

We can’t guarantee your safety, but we do take traveler safety seriously. Safety is a top priority with all of our Christian travel groups. We work with destination management companies who prioritize/commit to safety, and we’ve built strong relationships that allow us to provide an incredible experience whether you book one of our Europe or U.S. tours .

Are meals provided during the tours? Are dietary restrictions accommodated?

We provide meals and other accommodations during most of our tours, but you should check the details on our website before booking your tour. Hotels may also provide various options that can accommodate different types of diets, allergies, and other restrictions.

Can I customize my tour itinerary to include specific religious sites or activities?

We offer several Christian tours, so you can choose the tour that piques your interest. Some of our tours — including Italy and Greece tours and cruises —include optional activities and visits to religious sites. You can decide which sites you want to visit and spend your time relaxing on the shore or cruise ship when you’re not busy sightseeing. We do offer pre-nights or post-nights before and after our tours for those that want to take some time to rest, relax or get caught up on jet lag.

What is the group size for these tours?

Group sizes are typically between 25 and 35 people, although group sizes can vary. Some tour groups may be as large as 40–45 people, but it depends on the tour and the group leader. We try to maintain reasonably sized tour groups for our Christian vacations.

How far in advance should I book my Christian tour?

The sooner you book, the better. Our tour groups can fill up fast, but we do our best to give everyone a chance to visit other countries and learn about early Christian history throughout the world. Many of our tours offer an early reservation discount if you sign up for a tour 6+ months in advance. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to have a valid passport — and visa if required — before departing.

Do I need travel insurance for these Christian tours? Is it included in the package?

We strongly recommend purchasing a travel insurance plan — whether you’re booking one of our Christian Alaska cruises or a trip to Europe. Travel insurance charges can be added to your final bill, but they’re not included in your tour package. We can provide a total approximate cost for travel insurance when you book your tour.

Are there any extra fees or expenses not included in the tour package?

We do our best to offer tour pricing that includes as much as possible. You’ll need to pay a $300 (USD) deposit per person to book one of our Christian tours, $100 of which is non-refundable at time of deposit. However, most of our Christian travel packages include lodging, food, and all the other accommodations you’ll need during your trip. From Costa Rica tours to Alaska cruises, we offer a luxurious and enriching experience.

What is the cancellation policy for these tours?

You must notify Pilgrim Tours of your cancellation 91+ days before your departure date for a refund of your deposit minus service fees. Canceling on shorter notice will result in a smaller refund, and you won’t receive any refund if you notify us of your cancellation 7 days or fewer before your departure.

Can I extend my stay at any of the destinations beyond the tour dates?

Our Christian tours follow a specific itinerary, so you’ll need to stick with the tour group throughout the tour. During some of our tours, we’ll even travel to different countries and meet new tour guides throughout the trip. Travelers do have the option to book extra hotel nights either before the tour or after the tour.

Do you provide transportation between destinations?

We provide transportation for all of our Christian tours, from US to Germany tours . While transportation costs are included in the price of your tour, tips to guides and drivers aren’t covered.

What should I pack for the tour? Are there any specific clothing or items recommended?

You should pack appropriate clothing for the destination you’re visiting. Consider the culture you’re immersing yourself in and dress modestly according to cultural norms. You should also pack a phone charger, personal care products, medicine, and anything else you typically bring on a vacation.

Middle East crisis — explained

Conservative Christians are lending support — and cash — to Israel at war

TEL AVIV, Israel — David Ndayishimiye, a 21-year-old evangelical Christian, says he's long felt a calling to support Israel.

After the attacks of Oct. 7 in Israel, he felt that call more urgently. That day Hamas killed more than 1,200 people and took 240 people hostage, according to the Israeli government.

The University of Missouri, Columbia public affairs and policy graduate student wondered how best he could do this living in Missouri.

"I was really looking into a way to support Israel, because ever since I was young, since my teenage years, I had an urge to stand with Israel, because I'm a Christian," he tells NPR.

Ndayishimiye's support for Israel is connected to his family and faith's interpretation of biblical teachings about the Holy Land.

In April, Ndayishimiye fulfilled that yearning to show support for Israel directly when he visited that country, he says. He spoke with NPR before his trip and expressed his excitement at the chance to go, to learn more about the country and to better understand the current situation in Israel during wartime.

Before his trip he felt the need to show up for Israel as public support for the country is faltering in the U.S. after a months-long conflict in Gaza, and as pro-Palestinian protests are blocking roads , roiling college campuses and U.S. politics.

"I think that if we stand with Israel we'll be on the right side of history. That's my belief," he said.

With antisemitism on the rise, and Israel facing criticism from some U.S. lawmakers, students, human rights groups and other countries for its actions in Gaza, where, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed, other Christians and Christian organizations say they are feeling the call to support Israel now more than ever by donating, visiting in person and volunteering.

Conservative Christians, and evangelicals especially, have been staunch supporters of Israel for decades, citing a religious connection to the Jewish people and the land. This support stems from the belief by some denominations that the end times prophecy will take place in Israel, and that Israel is the rightful land for Jews, according to their interpretation of the Bible.

Ndayishimiye joined a nine-day trip to Israel organized by the Philos Project, a nonprofit based in the U.S., which says it "seeks to promote positive Christian engagement in the Near East." Representatives for Philos, as well as other Christian groups supporting Israel, including Christian Friends of Israeli Communities and HaYovel, say their work has taken on a renewed importance since the attacks of Oct. 7.

In the immediate days after Oct.7, Christianity Today reported that millions of dollars in donations were sent to organizations and ministries in Israel to respond to emergency needs.

The Associated Press reported in March that the major Christian pro-Israel group in the U.S., Christians United for Israel, raised and sent more than $3 million to Israeli first responders, healthcare workers and Oct. 7 attack survivors. CUFI declined to speak to NPR for this article.

But it's not all about money.

It has become a tremendous boost in morale when people are spending money to come to Israel, to listen and to lend a hand to a nation still trying to heal from trauma, Faydra Shapiro, the executive director of the Israel Center for Jewish Christian Relations, says. The group is dedicated to "building better relations between Christians and Jews, in Israel and around the world" through trips and educational programs.

"It's been extraordinary. And it's been important for us to remember that it's not us and them, it's not us and the world," Shapiro says.

Christians' early ties with Israel

Ndayishimiye says from his understanding of the Bible, he believes "Israel is a very special place. And it has a very special place in the heart of God."

The war has not scared off other devoted Christians who feel the same way as Ndayishimiye. There are still groups arriving to Israel for visits to Biblical sites like the Sea of Galilee, where pilgrims from all over the world come to be baptized every year.

Two weeks ago, a group of about 100 visitors from Brazil arrived to be baptized and shared similar sentiments to Ndayishimiye and his support for Israel.

Cleo Ribeiro Rossafa, 54, spoke to NPR as members of her group immersed themselves into the very water believed to be where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. It was Rossafa's 18th time in Israel, she said.

It's what many evangelicals believe is part of the "Abrahamic Covenant." This is the idea that God promised land that is now Israel and the Palestinian territories to Abraham and his descendants.

Research indicates that 51% of American evangelicals believe similarly that Jews are God's chosen people. Evangelicals are also the most likely group of Christians to make donations to Israel a priority, according to a 2021 survey from Grey Matter Research and Infinity Concepts .

Christian support for Israel emerged in earnest during the '60s and '70s, Daniel Hummel, a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and expert on U.S.-Israel relations and American evangelicalism, says. He is also the director for The Lumen Center, in Madison, Wis., which focuses on the study of Christianity and culture.

The Six-Day War (also called the 1967 Arab–Israeli War), which was fought between Israel and an alliance of Arab states including Jordan, Egypt, and Syria "brings us to the forefront of American evangelicalism," Hummel says.

This moment "is really significant" as for many Christians, particularly Pentecostals and fundamentalists, it appears to fulfill their belief that explained a prophecy of the end times, Hummel says.

He says the Six-Day War seems to fulfill particular biblical prophecies that some Christians understand the Bible says, which includes Jews kicking out Gentiles (non-Jews) from Jerusalem before the end times as more than 200,000 Palestinians were displaced. That sets off a lot of speculation within this facet of Christianity about whether the end is near "and Israel is sort of part of that story," Hummel says.

By the time the Yom Kippur War broke out in 1973, there are a lot of evangelicals in Israel that subsequently helped Israel respond to the war effort. That included manning food kitchens, driving ambulances and praying for Israel's success. This service work continued during subsequent Arab-Israeli conflicts that continued well into the '80s, '90s and early 2000s, Hummel says.

And where there were a few small organizations in the '60s and '70s, there are now dozens of organizations, based internationally or in Israel; most often, fundraising for Israeli needs and relying heavily on conservative, American evangelical funding, Hummel says.

This support also bleeds into the political for evangelical Christians in the U.S. that skew heavily Republican. They are among the biggest supporters of Israel in this war.

This is how the Republican Party became so strongly pro-Israel

This conflict feels different for Israel support even among evangelical circles, Hummel says.

There's something unique about Oct. 7 in that the conflict is becoming part of the U.S. culture wars, is playing out online and drawing a level of polarization that just didn't come up in the '80s and '90s, he says.

On the contrary, Shapiro of the Israel Center for Jewish Christian Relations says post-Oct. 7, 2023 she has seen "a change in emphasis" in this support from Christian Zionists.

"What I am seeing is that this is even less and less political, it is less and less about Zionism or about particular policies, and I'm seeing more and more of a kind of feeling that Oct. 7 was like a watershed civilizational moment," she says.

She says she finds that many Christians are asking themselves: "What if it were us? What is right for us as Christians? Here is a chance for us to show that we've learned something from history."

Not all Christian organizations have come out in support of Israel's war

There are also a number of Christian organizations that are taking a different approach to Israel's war in Gaza and are, instead, speaking out against the war and the loss of Palestinian lives in Gaza.

Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon leads one of those groups. She is the executive director of Churches for Middle East Peace, a broad coalition of American Christian denominations and organizations that has actively been calling for the end of Israel's military actions in Gaza.

She says the interpretation some Christians have of the scriptures and the Old Testament has resulted, in her opinion, in a false binary.

Cannon says she knows a number of Christians calling for the support for Israel's war efforts.

"Some are unilaterally supportive of Israel's military right to defend itself," she says. That has translated to people making solidarity trips or volunteering to join the Israeli military.

But the core belief within CMEP is "common principles of peacebuilding, nonviolence, demilitarization," Cannon says. "We're not pro Israeli or pro Palestinian, but we're advocates for human rights."

Dozens of activists from another group that opposes the war, Christians for a Free Palestine, were arrested in Washington, D.C. in April. Other groups, including Mennonite Action have organized regular protests against the war on Capitol Hill.

More than 140 Bishops and leaders from national and international churches and church-based organizations representing Catholics, Lutherans, Mennonites, Quakers, and Evangelicals signed a letter from CMEP published in March calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

The letter called on the U.S. and other powers to cease arms sales to Israel and for Israel, the U.S. and other countries to abide by the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Christian support brings millions in money and volunteers to Israel after Oct. 7

Sondra Oster Baras, the founder and international president of Christian Friends of Israeli Communities, says her group has seen a jump in fundraising. Her organization focuses specifically on the communities in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which CFOIC calls "the heart of Biblical Israel."

"People are in touch with us all the time [asking], 'How can we help?' They want to hear the latest. They are donating money for the security needs in Judea and Samaria, which is our focus right now," she says.

Oster Baras and her group refer to the West Bank as Judea and Samaria, a Biblical name for this region, and believe that this region is not occupied territory — a position at odds with much of the international community. Israeli nationalists who believe the West Bank should be part of Israel also use the term "Judea and Samaria" to describe this particular region.

Oster Baras lives in Karnei Shomron, an Israeli settlement in the West Bank.

Oster Baras, who is Jewish, says she fell into building up CFOIC Heartland, an organization that says it "enables Christians to connect with the Jewish communities (settlements)" in the West Bank. She started the group almost 30 years ago to focus on building Christian relationships and support for Israel. Most of CFOIC's tour participants are evangelical Christians who come from all around the world including the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Australia, she says.

"We're reaching out to anybody. But really, we're looking for friends," Oster Baras says. "All we're looking for is people who love Israel."

As of March, CFOIC started seeing an increase in people reaching out and arriving for solidarity missions, she says.

"We are in the middle of a war. It's certainly not a time when people looking for sun and a bit of archaeology and a bit of culture are coming to visit Israel," she says. "These are people who are raising money and giving money to help Israel in any way possible."

CFOIC fundraising money goes toward "beefing up civilian security measures," which includes surveillance cameras or communications equipment in what CFOIC calls "the third front" of the war, Oster Baras says.

Israeli settlers in the West Bank are an increasingly controversial and tense issue. There are reports of settlers increasing their attacks on Palestinian villages, burning homes, killing animals and ripping up plants and olive trees and expanding their outposts. Much of the international community condemns the settlers and their outposts as a violation of international law.

"I have to be extremely clear on this: We are not in any way involved in anything military. We are purely involved in things that are seen as defensive, protective measures for a community in a civilian capacity," she says.

The community has faced an increase in threats since Oct. 7, she says.

"It has become critical. And our Christian audience really understands that and has stepped up to the plate," she says.

The Christian Zionist organization, HaYovel, is similarly raising money for the protection of West Bank settlements. The group launched Operation Ittai when the war broke out, raising almost $3.7 million of its $29 million goal as of May 8 to go toward defense equipment in the other Jewish settlement communities in the West Bank.

"It really becomes a moral duty to stand with the Jewish people. We see Israel really fighting alone now. The international community is giving Israel a really hard time and that's hard for us to see," Joshua Waller, the director of operations for HaYovel says.

Waller and his family, originally from Tennessee, have dedicated their life to their organization's efforts in Israel. Waller's father founded the group 20 years ago. He lives now full-time in Israel.

HaYovel usually brings hundreds of volunteers, many from the U.S., annually to work on Jewish farms on settlements in the occupied West Bank. The group frequently brings visitors to plant trees in the area. Since the war started, "the only thing that changed for us was that it just became much more of a need," Waller says.

After Oct. 7, thousands of foreign workers left Israel after more than 50 citizens of Thailand who worked on the country's farms were killed or taken hostage.

Palestinian workers are also still banned from returning to work in Israel. But there remains a pressing need for farm hands to pick fruit and vegetables and milk cows.

In the absence of these workers, volunteers from around the world have been filling the needs of Israel's agricultural industry.

CFOIC received a group of visitors' in April, which included some Christians from the U.S., Scotland and Australia. The members of the group had been to Israel before but came this time "to bring support and comfort and to understand better," Oster Baras says.

They also volunteered on farms in the Jordan Valley, she says.

Frequently, visits from Christians to Israel in this time, like Ndayishimiye's own trip, have included making stops at communities attacked on Oct. 7, including the Nova rave site and kibbutzim ravaged by Hamas militants near the Gaza border, and hearing stories directly from survivors.

"That was a very, very important encounter for people from abroad," Oster Baras says. "To meet [them] in person and hear their story. It was just amazing."

Their trip involved a visit to communities in the Gaza envelope, which includes the southern areas of Israel within a few miles of the Gaza Strip border, and to Kfar Aza, a kibbutz attacked on Oct. 7.

This face-to-face effort is so important, Oster Baras says.

"We say this to every group. Before they leave, we say 'you are now our ambassadors,' " she says. "There's so much misinformation, there's so much distortion, so many lies that are being put out all over the world about Israel, and with the increased influence of social media, this is even worse. And this is how we combat it."

Cannon, with CMEP, believes some of those trips are "trauma tours" that can tread a fine line with voyeurism.

"People are going [on the tours] to empathize with Jewish grief and suffering, but there's a criticism that there's a certain co-opting of trauma. That's deeply disconcerting. Because we want to come alongside of Jewish families who are suffering. But solidarity and empathy is different than voyeurism," she said.

After his recent visit, Ndayishimiye says he feels more confident in his position on the war and in his belief that he must stand with Israel. In his interpretation of the Bible, the Word of God mandates the support of Israel.

His trip has supported his positions, he says. "I'm very confident now in my ability to speak up for Israel."
