From Florence to the Beaches of Nice: How to Watch the 2024 Tour de France

This year’s edition starts in Italy and features one of the toughest opening stages ever, a 206-kilometer ride from Florence to Rimini taking riders through the heart of the Apennine mountains.

The Tour de France was first raced in 1903 when journalist (and former bike racer) Henri Desgrange organized the event to promote L’Auto-Vélo, a French sporting newspaper that he edited–and is known today as L’Equipe. The newspaper was actually printed on yellow paper, which fuels one of the narratives surrounding the origins of the maillot jaune . That year’s Tour covered 2,428 km (1,509 mi) spread over just six stages–the average stage length was about 405 km (251 mi)–and only 21 of the original 60 starters finished the inaugural event.

Despite the low number of finishers, the event was an overwhelming success, and the Tour has since become one of the largest sporting events in the world, an event for which teams with multi-million dollar budgets spend years trying to win. For the riders, just a single stage win or day in the yellow jersey is a career-defining achievement. Riders who win the overall title–even just once–go down in history.

This year’s race covers 3,492 km (2,165 mi) spread over 21 stages, with eight days for the sprinters, two individual time trials, seven mountain stages, and about four stages for the punchy opportunists who head up the road in search of “do-or-die” breakaway stage victories–we love those guys.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Tour de France:

The route of the 2024 Tour de France is unlike any we’ve ever seen, mainly because it’s bookended by two of the biggest “firsts” in the event’s 110-year history: it’s the first to begin in Italy and the first to end outside of Paris (in Nice).

The Tour begins in Florence on Saturday, June 29th, the first of three-and-a-half stages in Italy. And we’re expecting fireworks right away: Stages 1 and 2 are two of the toughest opening stages we’ve ever seen, even harder than the opening stages of last year’s Tour, which took place in the hilly Basque region of northern Spain.

After a day for the sprinters on Stage 3, Stage 4 begins in Pinerolo and brings the race back into France via the 2,642m Col du Galibier. The second-highest climb in this year’s race, the first rider to the summit will win a cash prize given each year in honor of Degrange. By the end of one of the earliest mountain stages in Tour history, the GC battle will be in full swing.

The sprinters will then get two more chances as the race heads north. But the GC battle will resume on Friday, July 5th, with Stage 7, the first of two individual time trials in this year’s Tour. The first week ends with Sunday’s Stage 9, an exciting stage featuring 14 sections of white gravel roads through France’s Champagne region. This will be the first gravel stage in the history of the men’s Tour de France–the women completed a gravel stage of their own through the region in 2022.

After the Tour’s first Rest Day, the race resumes on Tuesday, July 9th, and begins a southwesterly trip–through the Massif Central, which hosts a rugged finish to Stage 11–toward the Pyrenees. Along the way, the sprinters will have a few more opportunities to win a stage before the high mountains return over the weekend.

And they return in a big way, with back-to-back hors categorie (“beyond category”) summit finishes in the mountains that form the border between France and Spain. Saturday’s Stage 12 takes the riders over the Tourmalet–which Desgrange first thought was too hard for the Tour de France–and ends with a finish at the Pla d'Adet ski resort, while Sunday’s Stage 13 ends on the Plateau de Beille–after almost 198km of racing.

As if the mountains aren’t enough cause for excitement, it’s also a holiday weekend: Sunday is Bastille Day–July 14th–so expect the roads on both days to be packed with “festive” fans. By the end of the day, the list of riders capable of winning the 2024 Tour de France will be much shorter than it was a week prior.

The Tour’s third and final week takes the race back east, where an Alpine finale looms. In all, the riders will spend four days in the mountains during the third week, first in the high Alps–with summit finishes at the end of Stage 17 ( at Superdévoluy) and Stage 19 (at Isola 2000). And don’t snooze on Thursday’s Stage 18, a saw-toothed stage from Gap to Barcelonnette that’s filled with short, jagged climbs and could be the perfect place for an ambush–or a Hail Mary–before the final weekend.

But this year’s final weekend is not what we’ve come to expect from Tours of the past. With the Summer Olympics beginning in Paris just five days after the end of the race, this year’s Tour skips its traditional finish on the Champs Elysees and instead finishes in Nice–after the hardest final weekend we’ve seen in decades.

The weekend opens on Saturday, July 20th, with Stage 20, a short but intense stage through the maritime Alps featuring four categorized ascents, including a summit finish on the Category 1 Col de la Couillole.

And just in case that doesn’t settle things, Sunday’s Stage 21 certainly will, as–for the first time in 35 years–the Tour de France ends with an individual time trial. And it’s a hard one: a 33.7 km race against the clock that takes the riders over the Col d'Èze, a tough Category 2 ascent that always features in the final stage of March’s Paris-Nice, an 8-day stage race that Tour contenders often use to build form during the first part of their seasons.

This might bode well for American fans–for two reasons. First, the last time the Tour de France ended with an individual time trial, American Greg Lemond defeated France’s Laurent Fignon–who entered the day wearing the yellow jersey–to win the Tour by eight seconds.

And this year’s winner of Paris-Nice–which finished with a stage over the Col d'Èze–was American Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), a 24-year-old from Idaho who took the yellow jersey on that final stage. Jorgenson will be lining up at this year’s Tour; could history repeat itself? We can’t wait to find out.

When it comes to watching the Tour de France, you’ve got lots of options. NBC’s Peacock ($5.99/month or $59.99/year) streams all events organized by A.S.O., which means you can watch the Tour de France now and then the Tour de France Femmes in August. If you have a good cable package and prefer conventional viewing on your television, you’re in luck: NBC will offer the race to cable subscribers via the USA Network and CNBC. Live coverage often starts around 7 a.m. EDT, so 9-to-5ers will likely need to record each stage and watch later. (Check the full schedule for details.)

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the 2023 Tour de France, defeating Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) to defend his title from 2022. The two champions engaged in a tense battle during the first two weeks of the race and entered the second Rest Day separated by just ten seconds on the Tour’s General Classification.

But Vingegaard exploded at the start of the third week, crushing Pogačar in an individual time trial on Stage 16 and then dropping him in the Alps on Stage 17. In just two stages, the Dane’s lead went from ten seconds to more than seven minutes. Pogačar saved face by winning Stage 20, but for the second year in a row, the winner of back-to-back Tours in 2020 and 2021 was forced to settle for second place–and the white jersey as the Tour’s Best Young Rider. Pogačar’s teammate, Great Britain’s Adam Yates–won Stage 1 and wore the Tour’s first yellow jersey–finished third overall.

Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was without question the Tour’s best sprinter. The Belgian won four stages and ran away with the green jersey as the winner of the Tour’s Points Classification. Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) won the polka dot jersey as the Tour’s King of the Mountains.

Jonas Vingegaard-Hansen (Visma-Lease a Bike)

At this point in time, we’re waiting to hear if Vingegaard will even be starting this year’s Tour de France. The defending champion was one of several Tour favorites taken down in a massive crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April. The Dane spent twelve days in the hospital after breaking several bones and suffering a punctured lung in the fall and only resumed training a few weeks ago. Visma-Lease a Bike recently said he has a 50-50 chance of starting the race, but only will do so if the team feels he’s 100% ready to challenge for a third consecutive victory.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

The uncertainty surrounding Vingegaard’s participation makes Pogačar the top favorite. The Slovenian won back-to-back Tours in 2020 and 2021 and scored back-to-back second-place finishes behind the Dane in 2022 and 2023. He’s been training since winning six stages and the General Classification at the recent Giro d’Italia and looks on track to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani (in 1998) to win the Giro-Tour double.

Primož Roglič (BORA-hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step)

Vingegaard wasn’t the only Tour contender who went down in that terrible crash at the Tour of the Basque Country: Slovenia’s Primož Roglič–who was leading the race at the time–and Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel were victims as well, and both riders immediately abandoned the race. Roglič injured his knee–but suffered no major injuries–but Evenepoel needed surgery after breaking his clavicle and scapula.

Unlike Vingegaard, both riders were able to get back to training relatively quickly, and they both competed at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné . Roglič won two stages and the General Classification despite almost cracking at the end of the final stage. Evenepoel won the Dauphiné’s only individual time trial, but showed he still has some room to improve after fading in the mountains. He finished the race in seventh place overall.

Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers)

Rodríguez, who won a stage and finished fifth in last year’s Tour de France, won the final stage and finished fourth overall at the Dauphiné, the latest in a series of high-stage race finishes for the 23-year-old. He’ll likely be joining Colombia’s Egan Bernal (who won the Tour in 2019) and Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (Who won the Tour in 2018) on the starting line in Florence to form one of the deepest eight-rider line-ups in this year’s race.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike)

If Vingegaard proves unable to start the Tour, don’t be surprised if Visma-Lease a Bike turns to Matteo Jorgenson to lead the team in his place. After winning Paris-Nice and Dwars door Vlaanderen in March, the American spent much of April and all of May at training camps, building form for the summer.

Well, it must’ve worked, as the 24-year-old nearly snatched the Dauphiné from Roglič after riding away with Rodríguez at the end of the final day. In the end, he lost the race by only eight seconds–another interesting coincidence given Lemond’s margin of victory at the Tour in 1989.

The American has never captained a team at the Tour de France, but he raced the French grand tour in 2022 and 2023–so he at least knows what the Tour’s pressure-cooker atmosphere feels like. And he should benefit from the presence of his teammate Sepp Kuss , the American who shockingly won last year’s Vuelta a España and played a pivotal role in each of the six grand Tours won by the team prior to his own victory at the Vuelta last September.

What to Know About This Year’s Tour de France (Which Begins in Italy)

Two previous winners are the leading contenders to win cycling’s most famous race, which, in a rarity, does not end in Paris.

For three weeks starting Saturday, the world’s best cyclists will do battle in the Tour de France, racing through valleys, hills and high mountains. Though 176 riders will start, most eyes will be on a pair of two-time winners who seek title No. 3.

After more than 2,000 miles and dozens of punishing climbs, will the winner be Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, who took the last two Tours de France but was hurt in a crash this year? Or Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia, the 2020 and 2021 winner ? Or will an unexpected contender jump up and surprise them?

And, wait: Is it really the Tour de France if the race doesn’t finish on the Champs-Élysées? Here’s a primer to read before the race gets underway.

Where will they race?

For the first time, the race will start in Italy , with the opening stage beginning in Florence and winding through the Apennine Mountains to Rimini, a city on the Adriatic coast. It will be more difficult than most opening stages, with several uphill climbs.

After a few days in Italy, the race will enter France, then go counterclockwise around the country, passing through the Alps, the Massif Central, the Pyrenees and then the Alps again.

Who are the favorites?

Vingegaard won last year’s event by an emphatic seven and a half minutes. But after a good start to the 2024 cycling season, he crashed badly in the Tour of the Basque Country in April and spent 12 days in the hospital with a broken collarbone. He is expected to ride in the Tour de France, but there is uncertainty as to what kind of shape he will be in.

As a result, Pogacar, who has been in fine form, is the favorite to win and regain his crown.

Pogacar rode in the Giro d’Italia, or Tour of Italy, in May. Unlike riders in that race who hold back to preserve their strength for the Tour de France, he gave it his all, winning by almost 10 minutes. If Pogacar claims the Tour as well, he will be the first cyclist since Marco Pantani, in 1998, to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

After the big two, other possible contenders include Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, the 2023 Giro winner, and Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, who won the 2022 Tour of Spain.

Though an individual wins the Tour, his team can help a lot, pacing him in the mountains and blocking attacks from rivals. Last year’s leading team, Jumbo-Visma (now Visma–Lease a Bike) has broken up; Vingegaard is still its leader, but Roglic left to join Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. UAE Team Emirates will support Pogacar with a squad that includes Adam Yates of Britain, a rider with the talent to win the Tour himself; he placed third last year.

Tell me the days that really matter.

The first stage to focus on is July 2, when the riders travel from Italy to France. It includes a climb up the Galibier, one of the Tour’s toughest mountains, and one that still has snow on the side of the roads.

In the midst of a week of flat stages that won’t change the leaderboard much, there is a time trial on July 5 in Burgundy wine country. The riders will race alone against the clock, with no help from teammates, which is why a time trial is known as “the race of truth.”

The real action comes at the end, with five mountain stages. The July 13 stage is particularly notable; it includes a climb up the Tourmalet in the Pyrenees and ends with an uphill — or more accurately, up-mountain — finish that is sure to winnow out any pretenders. Also make note of July 14, 17, 19 and 20 as four more brutal mountain stages where the Tour is likely to be won, or lost.

But even the flat stages, which are usually won by sprinters and seldom affect the overall standings, may have some extra interest this year. The great sprinter Mark Cavendish, 39, has 34 career stage victories and needs one more to break the record he shares with Eddy Merckx, the dominant rider of the 1960s and ’70s.

What’s different this year?

The day after that last mountain stage, the race will end, but not with the traditional ceremonial cruise down the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Instead, the field will hold a time trial to finish the Tour for the first time since 1989. If the race is close, the winner could be decided on that final day, as it was in 1989. That year, the American Greg LeMond snatched the Tour from Laurent Fignon of France in a time trial by a mere eight seconds, still the closest margin in history.

To avoid the Paris Olympics, which open five days later, the time trial will run from Monaco to Nice. It is the first time since 1974 the race has not ended on the Champs-Élysées and the first time ever it has not ended in Paris or its environs.

Remind me what the jerseys mean.

In each stage, whoever is the overall leader wears the yellow jersey to make him easier to spot for TV viewers and the thousands of fans along the route.

But there are other jerseys, too. Finishing near the front in individual stages, especially flat ones, earns points toward the green jersey for best sprinter. Last year’s winner of this jersey was Jasper Philipsen.

The first riders to reach the top of the race’s many mountains earn points toward the garish polka-dot jersey for best climber. The top contenders for yellow are also favored to win this jersey, as is Giulio Ciccone of Italy, who won last year.

Are there any Americans racing?

The days of American favorites like LeMond and Lance Armstrong are over for the time being. Moreover, Sepp Kuss, the American who won the 2023 Tour of Spain, is out because of a Covid-19 infection.

Matteo Jorgenson, 24, on the Visma team, is the top-ranked American. He won this year’s weeklong Paris-Nice race, and some think he can contend for the tour’s title in the future, or maybe, if all goes well, this year.

How can I watch?

Stages generally start around 6 or 7 a.m. Eastern time and last four to five hours. In the United States, Peacock will stream every stage live. Some stages will be shown on NBC and USA as well.

Other broadcasters include ITV and Eurosport (United Kingdom), SBS (Australia), FloBikes (Canada), France Televisions (France), ARD (Germany) and J Sports (Japan).

The Tour de France, the most elite bike race in the world, kicks off this Saturday, when 176 of the best cyclists in the world will race nearly 2,200 miles across 21 stages and climb over 170,000 feet of elevation into the clouds of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees and Alps. The effort involved can be mind-boggling. So can the business side of cycling.

Cycling’s Regulator and the Promoter

There are numerous actors and entities involved in professional cycling and their complex interrelationships underlie races like the Tour.

The sport of cycling is regulated by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), a non-governmental, non-profit association, based in Switzerland, which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the governing body for cycling. The UCI, like all international governing bodies in sports, is governed by a complex hierarchy of committees and executives from around the world.

The UCI is responsible for organizing, regulating, and sanctioning cycling events of various kinds for both men and women of different ages all over the world. The WorldTour is the UCI’s elite professional men’s road cycling tour. Teams and riders participate in races on the WorldTour calendar and earn points and are ranked based on their performance. The Tour de France, as one would expect, is a major contributor to those rankings.

The Tour itself is put on by the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), a French sports marketing and event management organization. The ASO’s crown jewel is the Tour de France but it organizes 29 other cycling events, including several important preparatory races for the Tour (such as the Critérium du Dauphiné), the Vuelta a España (another Grand Tour), as well as the Paris Marathon. It also operates the week-long Tour de France Femmes for women in August.

To be clear, the ASO and UCI are separate entities with sometimes divergent interests. The ASO organizes nine of the 35 races on the WorldTour calendar and understandably seeks to maximize interest and revenue associated with its events, most of which take place in France. Of particular note, the ASO controls and sells the broadcast rights to the Tour to networks around the world. While the specifics of those deals are not clear, they certainly bring in tens of millions of dollars a year to the ASO. Perhaps not surprisingly, the ASO and UCI have long-standing disputes over who controls the sport and reaps any related financial benefits.

Aside from the Tour, the remaining WorldTour events are organized by a variety of parties, including the UCI and organizers in the many countries where races take place.

The WorldTour calendar does not include any events in the United States. The Tour of Utah (2004-19), Tour of California (2006-19), and USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado (2011-15) were former races that attracted some of the best riders in the world. Nevertheless, the organizers ultimately found them financially unsustainable.

The next group worth mentioning are the teams. To the uninitiated, it might be confusing that cycling has teams, since only a single rider can win a race. However, teams are just as essential to victory in cycling as they are in soccer, football, or any other team sport.

Professional cycling teams consist of approximately 30 riders, eight of whom are chosen to be a part of the Tour de France roster. The composition of that roster will depend on the team’s goals. A handful of teams will have a rider they believe capable of winning the Tour de France’s General Classification (GC), signified by the yellow jersey. So the roster will be constructed toward that goal, including by stocking the roster with elite climbers and other riders (collectively known as domestiques) who can support the leader in a variety of ways.

The best teams protect their elite riders by encircling them and keeping them near the front of the race to minimize the chances of crashes. Elite domestiques will lead their stars up the mountains, breaking the wind and chasing down any attacks from competitors.

Other teams are formed around sprinters who try to win flat stages and win the green (points) jersey. Here too the team is tremendously important. In the closing miles of flat stages, the teams with the best sprinters push to the front, often hitting speeds of 40-50 miles per hour. The team’s riders will “lead-out” the sprinter by giving their maximum effort before dropping off and unleashing the sprinter toward the finish line. The Manx sprinter Mark Cavendish has 34 Tour de France stage wins, tied for the most all time, in large part due to the incredible lead-out teams he has had in his career.

If your team has neither a GC rider or a sprinter, it might try to win the King of the Mountains polka dot jersey or to win individual stages via creative and aggressive racing strategies.

There are 18 WorldTour teams and 17 ProTour teams. ProTour teams have smaller budgets, staffs, and schedules than their WorldTour counterparts. Beginning with the 2022 season, every three years the two lowest performing WorldTour teams are relegated to the ProTour and the top two ProTour teams are promoted to the WorldTour.

The idea of a “team” though is often remarkably in flux. Teams are identified by their corporate sponsors, which fund the vast majority of a team’s budget, ranging from about $ 10 to $40 million . Sponsorship contracts with teams are often only one or two years and renewals are closely tied to team performance. Consequently, on an annual basis, some teams are desperately looking to retain or find new sponsors in order to keep the team going another year or to avoid being relegated. Inevitably, some teams fold or merge with other teams. Team finances have historically been so shaky that the UCI Regulations require each WorldTour team to obtain a guarantee from a bank to fund its operations.

Additionally, the teams conduct some joint efforts through an organization known as the Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP), discussed further below. Nevertheless, the AIGCP has no role in organizing races and has minimal influence. Moreover, teams operate out of numerous countries and thus often have cultural differences of opinion on various issues (doping being a notable historical example).

Finally, we get to the riders. Cyclists are represented by the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA), a non-profit association, but not a labor union under the law of any country.

The CPA negotiates “ Joint Agreements ” with the AIGCP setting forth some minimum terms and conditions of employment, including various insurance coverages. Cycling is a physically grueling sport, where the term “ suffering ” is a point of pride. Unfortunately, most cyclists are not terribly well-paid for their efforts.

The current agreement sets the 2024 minimum salary for a WorldTeam rider at €68,957 (about $74,300) for veterans and € 55,793 ($60,100) for rookies. ProTeam veterans and rookies are entitled to a minimum of € 55,279 ($59,600) and € 46,234 ($49,800), respectively.

Of course, the stars of the sport make considerably more. Two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar earns a reported € 6 million ($6.47 million) from his team, UAE Team Emirates.

Yet, like the AIGCP, the CPA has little control over the sport, with minimal leverage to negotiate with the ASO or UCI. Indeed, the height of rider authority has been the occasional instance in which the riders “ neutralize ” a race stage due to unsafe conditions, meaning that they collectively agree to ride to the finish line at a moderate pace without contest.

Pogačar is favored to win this year’s Tour, with steep competition expected from fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic of Bora-Hansgrohe and Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (also a two-time Tour winner) of Visma-Lease a Bike, if he is able to overcome recent injuries. Otherwise, some of those involved in the Tour will win more than others.

This year’s Tour de France begins on June 29 in Italy before crossing into France on the fourth day. As usual, the 21-day route features a solid mix of flat to mountainous terrain. Two rest days break up the action before racers make their way to Nice—a departure from the usual Avenue des Champs-Élysées finish in Paris.

Bardet, la vie en jaune

Le scénario de la première étape du Tour de France 2024 a déjoué les prévisions qui voyaient la victoire d’un sprinteur au sein d’un groupe de costauds. Mais sur ce programme exigeant avec 3600 mètres de dénivelé positif entre Florence et Rimini, c’est finalement un grimpeur racé qui a su s’imposer en tablant sur l’audace. Romain Bardet a contre-attaqué à 51 kilomètres de l’arrivée dans la côte de San Leo pour rejoindre l’échappée et terminer l’étape en duo avec son coéquipier Frank Van den Broek qui avait anticipé le mouvement. Les deux associés, une fois débarrassés de Valentin Madouas, ont su résister au retour du peloton jusqu’aux bords de l’Adriatique, avec seulement 5 secondes de marge sur la ligne d’arrivée. Le coureur Auvergnat qui dispute son dernier Tour de France y remporte sa quatrième étape et s’offre l’honneur de porter pour la première fois de sa carrière le Maillot Jaune après avoir terminé à deux reprises sur le podium final.

Neuf coureurs dans l’échappée… dans un premier temps Le peloton du Tour 2024 se réunit au complet avec 176 coureurs au départ de Florence, pour un long défilé devant les monuments de la ville de Florence, dont le Palazzo Vecchio où se tient une cérémonie officielle de départ. Après cette séquence touristique et protocolaire, les candidats à l’échappée sont nombreux dès le premier kilomètre. Les mouvements se succèdent et c’est finalement au km 17 que se détache un groupe de sept coureurs avec Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Clément Champoussin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Frank Van den Broek (dsm-firmenich PostNL), Sandy Dujardin et Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies). Les sept attaquants prennent le large mais derrière eux, Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) et Ryan Gibbons (Lidl-Trek) sortent en contre-attaque et opèrent la jonction au km 41, c’est-à-dire dans la montée au col de Valico Tre Faggi. Au sommet, Ion Izagirre bascule en tête tandis que le groupe, qui a perdu Matteo Vercher, bénéficie d’un avantage de 5’10’’ sur le peloton. Gaudu et Martinez à la peine L’enchaînement des ascensions essore le groupe de tête, qui lâche ensuite Dujardin et Champoussin dans la côte de Carnaio. Au sommet (km 98,3), Ion Izagirre poursuit sa chasse aux pois, bataillant pour le premier maillot avec Jonas Abrahamssen. Dans le peloton, Mark Cavendish a été le premier des sprinteurs à disparaître dans la première montée. La poursuite est dans un premier temps menée par les EF Education Easypost, qui réduisent l’écart autour de 3’30’’, mais c’est surtout dans la côte de Barbotto que la sélection se durcit avec les UAE Emirates à la manœuvre. Pendant que Ion Izagirre se retrouve exclu de l’échappée, les sprinteurs passent à la trappe, mais aussi des grimpeurs comme Lenny Martinez et David Gaudu. Juste avant d’entrer dans le dernier kilomètre de montée, c’est aussi le tour de Mathieu Van der Poel et de Mads Pedersen de subir. Au sommet (133,6), l’avance des 5 hommes de tête n’est plus que de 2’45’’ sur le peloton. Bardet en contre-attaque La côte de San Leo change encore davantage la donne, puisque dans ses 4,6 km d’ascension le groupe de 5 se transforme en duo avec Madouas et Abrahamsen, puis en solo dans le dernier kilomètre avec l’accélération du coureur de Groupama-FDJ. Derrière, le peloton s’est également rapproché, et Romain Bardet en est sorti en contre-attaque pour se lancer à la poursuite de Madouas. L’opération se précise et à 42 km de l’arrivée, c’est le trio Bardet-Van den Broek-Madouas qui prend les commandes de l’étape. L’ancien champion de France perd le contact, et le duo des dsm-Firmenich se lance dans le défi de résister au peloton avec 1’45’’ d’avance au sommet de la côte de Montemaggio (km 167,1).   Le duo franco-néerlandais résiste La mission consiste d’abord à garder un avantage suffisant dans la côte de San Marino, où les deux coéquipiers conservent un écart de 1’05’’ sur Ben Healy dans le rôle du contre-attaquant, et le peloton en poursuite à 2’. A la bascule, il reste 26,3 km à parcourir. Le peloton accélère, avale le coureur irlandais et se présente dans les dix derniers kilomètres avec un retard réduit à 45’’ sur Bardet et Van den Broek. La situation se complique avec 35’’ d’avance à 5 km, puis 10’’ sous la Flamme Rouge. Pourtant la paire franco-néerlandais parvient à résister jusqu’au bout, avec 5’’ d’avance sur le peloton réglé par Wout van Aert.

L’enseigne du groupe Casino lance un nouveau concept de magasin et mise sur la baisse des prix de plus de 100 produits. Trois boutiques ont d’ores et déjà été rénovées dans la capitale.

Depuis qu’il est passé sous le giron du consortium mené par Daniel Kretinsky fin mars, le nouveau groupe Casino s’active sans relâche pour tenter de sortir la tête de l’eau et se relancer. Après avoir cédé la plupart de ses super et hypermarchés Casino ces derniers mois, le temps est venu pour la nouvelle direction dirigée par Philippe Palazzi de s’attaquer à la relance des activités de proximité du groupe . Franprix, l'un des deux fleurons avec Monoprix créé à Paris en 1958, vient de lancer sa nouvelle stratégie pour dynamiser ses ventes en jouant sur les prix et en modernisant les magasins.

Il y avait urgence. Ces magasins, qui bénéficient d’excellents emplacements en centre-ville, ont souffert d'un manque d'investissements et de stratégie commerciale globale ces dernières années. La dernière opération d'envergure, nommée « Mandarine» , remonte à 2015 lorsque le directeur général de l'époque, Jean-Paul Mochet, avait positionné Franprix sur un créneau plus premium avec, notamment, l'installation de machines à presser des jus d'orange à l'entrée des magasins. Une petite réussite à l’époque.

Baptisée «Oxygène» , la nouvelle opération vise à faire du distributeur «la référence de la proximité urbaine» dans les dix prochaines années. L'objectif est ambitieux et chiffré: la direction espère atteindre une hausse de 10% du chiffre d'affaires pour chaque magasin reconfiguré. «On a un objectif qui est d'avoir un produit de plus par panier» , précise le directeur général de Franprix, Vincent Doumerc.

Les franchisés associés aux décisions

Pour y parvenir, il n'est toutefois pas question d'imposer ce plan aux franchisés qui détiennent 950 magasins sur les 1100 que compte l'enseigne dans toute la France, dont 367 à Paris. «On intègre tous les franchisés aux décisions» , insiste le directeur général. Le nouveau concept magasin est d'abord testé dans trois boutiques parisiennes (12e, 20e et 17e arrondissements) pendant les trois prochains mois avant d'être ajusté et présenté à l'ensemble des franchisés à l'automne.

Devenu central dans le choix des consommateurs depuis la crise inflationniste, le positionnement prix est clé dans cette stratégie. Il l’est d’autant plus que l’enseigne fait face à une forte concurrence en raison de prix pratiqués souvent plus élevés que dans d’autres distributeurs. Franprix a alors décidé de baisser les prix des fruits et légumes et de près de 150 de produits du quotidien de marques nationales comme les crèmes dessert Danette à la vanille et les camemberts Président. L’enseigne prévoit également une offre plus large qui inclut davantage de produits de marque de distributeur (MDD). Et mise sur des formules déjeuner - plat, dessert et boisson - «à prix fixe et accessible» , autour de 5 euros.

Autre axe majeur de l’opération : la modernisation des boutiques avec l’intention d’en faire des lieux plus «chaleureux» . Le mobilier reste toujours dans les tons orangés mais avec des éclairages plus doux, des étagères plus modulables, et une présentation épurée des produits pensée «par moments de consommation» avec des rayons petit-déjeuner, apéritifs ou encore goûter. Quant aux caisses, «on évite de mettre des caisses automatiques. On a une mission qui est de réhumaniser la société et de jouer le rôle de voisin chez qui on aime faire ses courses» , souligne le directeur général de l’enseigne.

Enfin, l’offre de services est diversifiée. Avec, notamment, l’installation de consignes à bagages ou encore de casiers connectés qui permettent de louer des équipements du quotidien, allant de la perceuse louée 3 euros de l'heure au croque monsieur-gaufrier pour 6 euros la soirée.

La direction espère avoir transformé quelque 500 magasins au cours des quatre prochaines années. Le coût de l'opération est estimé à moins 1000 euros le m2, avec un tiers du financement assuré par le groupe et le reste pris en charge par les franchisés.

Le jour où on trouvera une hygiène acceptable, un service aimable et des prix décents dans ces magasins, on ira peut-être chez Franprix. En attendant, les moucherons, les fruits pourris et les portes perpétuellement ouvertes dans les rayons frais ont eu raison des plus motivés.

"D’habitude, on ne voit ça que dans les films !" : un conducteur rate un rond-point, traverse un grillage et s’encastre dans un magasin

Ce samedi 29 juin 2024, une voiture a fini sa route dans un magasin à Milizac (Finistère). Le conducteur a été pris en charge par les secours.

Si les faits peuvent s’apparenter à une scène de film, ils sont pourtant bien réels. Ce samedi, en début d’après-midi, un homme qui circulait dans une petite commune proche des côtes bretonnes, a raté un rond-point et son véhicule a foncé dans un magasin de bricolage, indique Ouest France .

"C’est pas courant"

C’est aux alentours de 13 heures que la voiture, une BMW, est venue s’encastrer dans le commerce Espace Émeraude, à Milizac, près de Brest. Avant d’arriver là, le conducteur avait donc raté son rond-point et a ensuite traversé un grillage avant de finir sa course dans le magasin, dans l’arrière-boutique, précise le quotidien local.

"D’habitude, on ne voit ça que dans les films !" , a lancé le responsable. "C’est pas courant" , a-t-il poursuivi.  Il a dû fermer son enseigne le temps de l’intervention des pompiers, qui ont dû extraire le véhicule. " J'ai une équipe au top qui a tout réparé rapidement" , a-t-il relaté auprès de France Bleu . Pas moins de 13 sapeurs pompiers étaient présents, accompagnés des forces de l’ordre.

Néanmoins, le conducteur de la voiture accidentée a été légèrement blessé au moment de la collision et a été transporté à l’hôpital de Brest. Selon le gérant du magasin de bricolage, il paraissait "sonné mais pas trop mal en point" .

The Once-Hyped 2024 Tour De France Is Shaping Up To One Giant Letdown

The 2024 Tour de France was building up to be one of the most historic editions in the race’s 111-year history.

But now, just one day from the start of the race, it’s looking like it could turn into an historic letdown instead.

Let’s start with the basics. The big storyline was the battle for the overall victory between two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and 2020/21 champion Tadej Pogacar.

The two are, by far, the best grand tour riders on the planet and have provided endless entertainment over the last two editions of the race.

But sadly, Vingegaard had a massive crash at the Itzulia Basque Country in April that saw him suffer a collapsed lung and several broken bones.

Vingegaard has not competed since the crash and suspicions are that it’s unlikely he’ll be 100 percent for the Tour.

Major Crash Took Out Several 2024 Tour de France Contenders

But he wasn’t alone. Primoz Roglic finished as the runner-up to Pogacar in the 2020 Tour de France, leading all the way until the penultimate stage. Roglic spent the last handful of seasons as a teammate of Vingegaard, but this year he left for German team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.

Fans were excited to see Roglic square off with his Slovenian compatriot Pogacar and ex-teammate Vingegaard. But Roglic also crashed in the same incident as Vingegaard and although he recently one the Criterium du Dauphine, he didn’t look anywhere near capable of challenging Pogacar.

Then there’s Remco Evenepoel. The 24-year-old Belgium is a former world champion, the 2022 Vuelta Espana winner and is set to ride in his first career Tour de France.

But Evenepoel too crashed the same incident and finished 2:25 behind Roglic in the recent Criterium du Dauphine.

Vingegaard, Pogacar, Roglic and Evenepoel are considered the four best grand tour riders in the world right now. However, only Pogacar enters the Tour de France healthy and with a normal preparation.

But that’s not the only black cloud hanging over the 2024 Tour de France.

Sepp Kuss, who became the first American to win a grand tour since Christopher Horner in 2013 when he won last year’s Vuelta Espana, had to pull out of the race due to lingering COVID symptoms.

On top of being a threat in his own right, Kuss’s was considered Vingegaard’s most valuable teammate. While fellow Visma teammate Wout Van Aert also enters the race coming off an injury.

Pogacar isn’t shy on help, either. He rides for Team UAE Emirates. Including Pogacar, UAE has four of the top 10 favorites to win the 2024 Tour de France according to betting markets .

Who knows? Maybe Vingegaard is healthier than anybody thinks. Maybe Roglic can roll back the clock, or Evenepoel can do something special.

But one day out, the 2024 Tour de France just looks like one giant tease.

Les affichettes pour signaler la "shrinkflation" deviennent obligatoires en magasin... mais passent inaperçues

À partir du 1er juillet, les grandes surfaces vont devoir apposer une affichette à côté des produits concernés par la shrinkflation, qui consiste à réduire la quantité d'un produit pour ne pas avoir à en augmenter le prix. dans les faits, très peu de produits sont concernés par la mesure..

C'est une étiquette qui devait attirer tous les regards... mais qui finalement risque de passer inaperçue. À partir du lundi 1er juillet, les grandes surfaces (c'est-à-dire les supermarchés de plus de 400 mètres carrés) vont devoir apposer une affiche à côté des produits concernés par la "shrinkflation" : cette pratique (aussi appelée "réduflation" en français) consiste pour les industriels à réduire la quantité des produits, sans en changer le prix. Concrètement, vous pensez acheter le même dentifrice ou le même paquet de chips, mais en réalité le grammage est allégé : vous en avez moins.

Cet affichage est une obligation du gouvernement, prise par arrêté (paru au Journal officiel le 4 mai dernier). Dès lundi, donc, l'étiquette doit être visible et lisible, détaillant les variations de la quantité vendue et du prix – les produits en vrac et les denrées alimentaires pré-emballées (comme le rayon traiteur, où la quantité peut varier d'un emballage à l'autre) sont exclus du dispositif. Pour les autres, les affiches doivent être placardées deux mois à compter de la commercialisation du produit.

Mais au bout du compte, très peu de produits sont concernés. Dans les rayons, il est quasiment impossible de constater le dispositif. Chez Système U (devenu récemment Coopérative U), on compte 4 produits étiquetés sur 30 000 références. Il y en a moins d'une dizaine chez Monoprix, et aucune dans les Carrefour et les magasins Mousquetaires.

"Un cercle vertueux"

Un distributeur grince des dents : une usine à gaz, des centaines de lettres envoyées aux fournisseurs, et... tout ça pour ça, souffle-t-il, assurant qu'on aurait pu s'en passer. À l'inverse, le groupe Carrefour estime que cet arrêté, qui a laissé un peu moins de deux mois aux fournisseurs pour changer leurs pratiques, a eu un rôle dissuasif et les a responsabilisés. Un avis partagé par l'association de consommateurs Foodwatch : " S'il n'y a plus d'affiches, ça veut dire que c'est une victoire ", affirme Alice Morice, qui y est chargée de campagne. " Dès lors que vous remettez de la transparence dans les supermarchés, vous désincitez les industriels à avoir recours à ce type de pratiques. C'est un cercle vertueux, ça montre que le gouvernement, s'il en a la volonté, peut fixer des règles du jeu claires et mettre un stop aux pratiques abusives de l'industrie agroalimentaire ".

À Bercy, on affirme ne pas être fermés à l'idée d'étendre ce type de réglementation à d'autres pratiques décriées comme la "cheapflation" ou la "stretchflation" : la première consiste à mettre des ingrédients moins chers et de moins bonne qualité, sans changer le prix. La seconde fait son apparition dans les rayons : l'industriel augmente un petit peu la quantité, mais en profite pour augmenter beaucoup plus son prix. À l'heure actuelle, pour les grandes surfaces qui ne mettraient pas bien en place les affiches, le décret prévoit "une amende entre 3 et 15 000 euros". L'association Foodwatch et l'État invitent également les consommateurs à signaler des produits suspects via l’application ou le site internet "SignalConso".
