The 25 Best Things to Do in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is a small beachside city in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, just a mere 2.5 – 3 hour drive south of Bangkok. Expect sweeping beaches, seaside culture, markets selling fresh seafood, beautiful spa and wellness offerings and plenty of things to do to keep entertained.

Hua Hin is a great destination for a quick weekend getaway from Bangkok, as I've recently done. But it's also a wonderful place to stay and relax for an entire week.

Best things to do in hua hin

If you're wondering what should be at the top of your list of things to do, read on to find my recommendations for the 25 best things to do in Hua Hin, including temples, markets, forests, caves, beaches, and other popular Hua Hin attractions.

1. Catch Some Sunshine at Hua Hin Beach

Hua Hin Beach is a popular beach, being so close to Bangkok, with four kilometers of white sand right in the middle of Hua Hin city centre and overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. Hua Hin means “stone head” and refers to the large rock formations visible from the beach.

While you might have the beach to yourself in the morning, it gets pretty busy around lunchtime. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and places renting water sports equipment, perfect to just while away an entire day!

2. Take in the View from Khao Hin Lek Fai

Get a feel for Hua Hin by driving up to the popular Khao Hin Lek Fai viewpoint. There are six different viewpoints on the plateau, with views as far as Koh Singtoo, a tiny offshore island.

If you are up early enough, this is a great place to watch the sun rise up over the ocean.

3. Discover Wat Hua Hin

Wat Hua Hin, also known as Wat Amparam, is right next to the beach in the center of Hua Hin town and is the most significant temple while also being a cultural focal point for the city.

Wander the large and attractive courtyard and check out the mural walls inside the temple.

4. Snack at Hua Hin Night Market

The main night market in Hua Hin starts at Petchkasem Road and runs up the railway line.

Opening at 5 pm every night, brightly lit market stalls sell freshly made street food and a wide range of local souvenirs. This night market is the perfect spot for people-watching.

5. Handicraft Shopping at Cicada Market

If you want to discover the local art scene, there is no better place than Cicada Market, which feels a little chic. There are stalls selling food, souvenirs, clothes, and accessories, and you can watch live performances too.

Many artists work and sell at Cicada Market, and you can watch them paint or request a sketch.

6. Get Pampered at the Barai Spa

Thailand is well known for its pampering massages and relaxing spa treatments, and the Barai is one of the very best spa options in Hua Hin. Set in the Hyatt Regency and spread over 4.5 acres of serene beach, there are 18 treatment rooms.

The programs aim to take guests into an unfamiliar environment and create inner balance by using the elements to connect with the five senses.

Barai spa things to do hua hin

7. Embrace History at Rajabhakti Park

Rajabhakti Park is a historically themed park created to honor the Thai kings from the historic Sukhothai period to the current Chakri royal family.

The grounds are lush and there are seven fine bronze statues on display. The large plaza is used for parades and ceremonies.

8. Meet the Animals at Hutsadin Elephant Foundation

One of the most exciting things for many visitors to Thailand is to get up close and personal with its native elephants. However, finding ethically run parks that treat their elephants well is more challenging.

Fortunately, the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation is an ethical foundation that cares for elephants rescued from exploitation. Wander the park and watch the elephants feed, bathe, and play.

9. Dine at Tamarind Market

Tamarind is yet another of Hua Hin's excellent night markets. It is smaller than a lot of the others but has a delightful local vibe.

There is usually live music playing, and while the market is mostly food stalls, there are also a few souvenir treasures.

10. Explore Phraya Nakhon Cave

Phraya Nakhon Cave is about an hour from Hua Hin in the heart of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. From the entrance of the park, you can reach the cave by trail or boat. In the giant cave of dramatic stalagmites and stalactites is a small temple that glows in natural sunlight.

You can get a full-day tour of Praya Nakhon Cave and Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park from Hua Hin with Viator .

11. Visit the Tham Khao Luang Cave Shrine

The entire province is famous for its atmospheric caves, but Tham Khao Luang Cave Shrine stands out with its natural sunlight and dozens of statues of Buddha in quiet meditation.

There are several smaller caves hiding more statues, and it is a challenge to find them all.

12. Scale Wat Huay Mongkol Temple

The Wat Huay Mongkol Temple attracts visitors from throughout Thailand. It is dedicated to the important supernatural figure of Luang Phor Thuad, who was known for his miracles. People pray here for good luck, favors, health, fortune, and happiness.

The temple features a gigantic statue of the monk on a large pedestal. There are several other statues, including a three-headed elephant thought to be Thai angels in the shape of Garuda.

13. Find Thrills at Vana Nava Water Jungle

Vana Nava Water Jungle is one of Thailand's oldest water parks and top tourist attractions.

It has more than 20 attractions including rides, slides, a wave pool, and the famous Lazy River raft. This is a great place for a family day out that both children and adults will enjoy.

14. See the Standing Buddha Statue at Wat Khao Takiab

Wat Khao Takiab sits at the top of a mountain, also known as Monkey Mountain, and is one of the most famous temples in the region. It is visible from the beach below, but it is worth hiking up the hill and then the 80 steps to the shrine.

The temple itself is stunning, and there are fantastic views of the beach below.

15. Swim at Black Mountain Water Park

Black Mountain Water Park in Hua Hin is a popular, family-friendly attraction nestled just outside Hua Hin in the scenic beauty of Thailand.

With its thrilling water slides, wave pools, and relaxing lazy river, it offers a perfect blend of excitement and relaxation for visitors of all ages.

Buy your one-day pass & skip the line.

16. Walk Mrigadayavan Palace

This stunning summer palace was built 1923-24 as a holiday home for King Rama VI so that he could live by the airy seaside for his rheumatoid arthritis. Sadly, he visited the palace only twice before his passing, and it took another 30 years before it was opened to the public.

It is a mix of Italian and Thai architecture with large airy rooms and long verandas, and its own private beach.

17. Spend the Day at Market Village

Market Village is Hua Hin's largest shopping complex and is more of an entertainment center with 100 specialty shops.

It's a must-visit destination for those seeking a well-rounded shopping and leisure experience in Hua Hin.

18. Sail on the Venezia Hua Hin

The Venezia Hua Hin feels a little Las Vegas, mixing shopping and theme park activities.

The complex is constructed to look like Venice in Italy, even with a grand canal that can be traversed via gondolas.

Venezia best things to do hua hin

19. Visit Plearn Wan Shopping Village

Shopping can be a fascinating way to learn about local culture, and Plearn Wan Shopping Village is one of the best places to do this in Hua Hin.

This shopping center feels like it has a bit of everything, but that everything is unique, and there are few chain stores. There are many restaurants and cafes ideal for people-watching.

20. Relax at Khao Takiab Beach

If you are looking for a less crowded beach, head out of Hua Hin for Khao Takiab Beach, about seven kilometers away.

A large Buddha stands on the rocks looking out over the beach and there are several nice restaurants and resorts in the area. The water is calm and shallow, which makes it a great spot for kids.

Khao takiab beach best things to do hua hin

21. Trek Pran Buri Forest Park

This is a large mangrove conservation area and also a popular tourist attraction.

You can walk the mangroves via a one-kilometer teakwood walkway with signposts describing the native flora and fauna. You can also book a boat to explore more broadly.

22. Visit Kaeng Krachan National Park

A day trip to Kaeng Krachan National Park, including a trip to Pala U Waterfall, should be on your list and I recommend booking this with Viator .

The waterfall is on the south side of the park and has sixteen big, rocky steps. While the lowest three steps are fairly accessible, the high steps should only be tackled by experienced climbers.

Kaeng krachan national park best things to do hua hin

23. Take a Day Trip to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

I've already mentioned the caves in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, but there is so much more to see at this marine park that also contains the mountain with “300 peaks”.

It is a wildly diverse environment with caves, peaks, beaches, and freshwater marshes. It's best to be explored as a day trip from Hua Hin, such as this popular tour .

24. Explore the Hua Hin Floating Market

Thailand's floating markets are among its most famous features and should always be part of your itinerary.

The busy water markets are frequented by both locals and visitors and there are 200 shops on the boardwalk and 40 floating boats. Hire a pedal boat to reach the floating stalls.

Floating market best things to do hua hin

25. Set Down at Hua Hin Railway Station

Located a short drive from Khao Hin Lek Fai lookout, Hua Hin train station is a vintage red-colored relic.

It has majestic royal waiting rooms with distinctive Thai design and concept. It's a beautiful building to look at, but not much more. However, since this is a working station, you can get the train from Hua Hin Railway Station to Bangkok.

16 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Hua Hin

Written by Meagan Drillinger and Diana Bocco Updated Dec 24, 2023

Hua Hin may have started as a sleepy beach town, but today it has grown into a vibrant city by the sea. Two and a half hours south of Thailand's capital, Bangkok (and another world away), this small-town-turned-tourist hot spot is an exciting beach, dining, and shopping destination right on the Gulf of Thailand.

Hua Hin Beach

Before this small town of 60,000 people became a tourists' favorite, it was best known for being home to Klaikangwon Palace, the summer residence of one of Thailand's former kings back in the 1920s. Today, it's the perfect getaway to some of the country's best national parks and quietest beaches.

If you're thinking of stopping by here when visiting Thailand , plan your sightseeing with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Hua Hin.

Dip Your Toes in the Sand of Hua Hin Beach

Feel like royalty at maruekhathaiyawan palace, pick up souvenirs at the hua hin night market, escape to khao takiab hill and beach, keep shopping into the night at cicada market, step into a world of illusions at for art's sake, transport yourself to a different world at santorini park, shop the world at the venezia hua hin, get wet at black mountain water park, take a day trip to kaeng drachan national park and pala-u waterfall, walk through the pranburi mangrove forest, escape to sam roi yot freshwater marsh, shop at the sam pan nam floating market, browse the galleries at hua hin artists village (baan sillapin), shop even more at bluport hua hin, dine alfresco at tamarind market, where to stay in hua hin for sightseeing, map of attractions & things to do in hua hin.

Hua Hin Beach

Most people who come to this sleepy town come here for the beach. While other beach towns in Thailand are all about the nightlife, Hua Hin is a much quieter destination where you can truly lie down on the beach for hours of peaceful sun-worshipping.

Hua Hin's beach stretches for four kilometers --and while it might not be the largest or the whitest in Thailand, it makes up for it by being great for swimming , offering lots of family-friendly things to do ( kitesurfing and banana boat rides included), and always having deckchairs and umbrellas available for rent. Beach vendors selling refreshments and local souvenirs and crafts are often around (without being pushy) in case you need to stock up on goods without walking too far.

Maruekhathaiyawan Palace

Built for King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) as a summer retreat in the 1920s, Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is constructed entirely of teak wood and sits right on the beach.

The clever design of the palace – which sits on pillars and is made up of several sections connected by long covered corridors – allows for perfect air circulation and keeps the place cool in the hot and humid Thai afternoons. There's even a corridor leading straight to the beach and the Queen's former bathing pavilion.

The King's living chambers are partially furnished with some of his original possessions. His study, where the king composed poetry when staying here, overlooks the ocean and houses his beloved desk and writing materials.

Visitors can also explore the manicured gardens surrounding the palace or enjoy a picnic on the grass.

Address: 1281 Phetkasem Road | King Rama VI Army Camp

Handicrafts for sale at the Hua Hin Night Market

No matter how much upscale shopping you do in Thailand, nothing beats the authentic feel of a local night market – a chance to soak up the atmosphere and experience real Thai market culture. Night markets often have no rhyme or reason in Thailand, and Hua Hin's night market is no exception. Here, you'll find arts and crafts next to cheap snacks (don't be too shocked at the deep-fried insect snacks for sale) and stalls offering apparel.

Because Hua Hin's night market also attracts tourists, you'll find your share of stalls selling cheap souvenirs and beachwear, but also lots of street vendors selling authentic ware and fare for everyday life, Buddhist tokens, and traditional Thai crafts. Address: Petchkasem Road near 74 Street, Hua Hin

Khao Takiab Hill

Khao Takiab hill offers access to a quiet stretch of beach and impressive views over Hua Hin from up top. Some of the best seafood restaurants in town are located in this area, as well as some of the most colorful Buddhist temples you'll find in Hua Hin.

Khao Takiab temple, better known to locals as " Monkey Mountain ," is home to hundreds of wild macaques-a fun experience as long as you hang on to your bags and phone, since they have become quite good at stealing things from tourists.

Cicada Market at night

An open-air weekend market that's all about arts and crafts , Cicada is popular with both Thai and foreign tourists and is particularly lively once the sun goes down. The market is divided into four sections that include decorative home items and fashion for sale, an art gallery, a massive outdoor food court, and an area dedicated to live music and shows featuring bands, dance groups, unique pantomime performances, and live DJs.

What makes Cicada different from other night markets is definitely its style. You won't find cheap plastic souvenirs here, but instead a lot of handmade items, original paintings and sculptures, contemporary art displays, and even artists working on glass blowing and live sketching. And while there's a lot of cool things you can take home and many chances for artsy retail therapy at Cicada, the focus doesn't fall heavily on shopping either because of the many opportunities to chill out and just enjoy the surroundings.

Bonus points for the market being near the beach, so you can catch the cool salty breeze in a hot evening out.

Address: 83/159 Nong Kae-Khao Takiap Road, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Official site: https://www.cicadamarket.com/

For Art's Sake

Thailand's first 4D Art Museum is a must-see for all ages. A quirky collection of fun murals painted by Thai artists, art installations, and sculptures, these are truly living images. Place yourself in the right spot, take a photo, and voila – you're automatically part of a 3D image where piano stairs come to life, you can jump into the mouth of a shark, and monsters almost get you in the Horror Zone. The 4D element is provided through music and sound effects that make each museum zone even more unique.

Address: 22/141 Phetkasem Road, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77110

Santorini Park

Just 15 minutes away in the neighboring town of Cha Am is Santorini Park, a themed shopping and attraction village that looks exactly like the name suggests. You might not get the sweeping views here of the ocean that you would at the real Santorini, but otherwise, Santorini Park does a very good job of bringing a picture-perfect Greek island to Hua Hin.

Rows of whitewashed buildings line up the stone-paved streets, winding around cafes, shops, and souvenir stores. There's even an outdoor performance space and a small amusement park here, complete with a Ferris wheel, a carousel, and a number of climbing and adrenaline rides for both kids and adults.

Address: Phetkasem Road (198 kilometer post)

Venezia Hua Hin

Thailand seems to have mastered the art of building themed shopping centers, where shops aren't the main attraction but instead just blend in with the incredible scenery. If visiting Santorini got you inspired and yearning for European lands, this place makes perfect sense as your next stop.

The Venezia is an impressive mini replica of magical Venice , complete with a reproduction of the San Marco's bell tower; a 200-meter-long canal (Gondolas included) that cuts through the shopping center; and plenty of attractions-including mini train rides; a 3D museum; and many photo opportunities around every corner.

While The Venezia is technically a shopping center, stores aren't the main attraction here. Still, you'll find plenty of local and international brands, as well as a chance to pick up some high-end local souvenirs.

Address: 1899 Petch Kasem Road, Cha Am

Floating in a Thai water park

The beach might be just a few steps away, but that doesn't mean visitors should skip a visit to Hua Hin's water park when in town. With nine slides (including an impressive 17-meter-high vertical slide tower with a heart-stopping straight double-drop) and six pools , Black Mountain has something for everybody.

Lounge around in the lazy river , try the giant pool especially dedicated to water games, or jump into the largest wave pool in Thailand-then have a bite or grab a beach chair for some relaxing time in the shade.

Location: 1 Moo 2, Tambon Hin Lek Fai

Official site: https://www.blackmountainwaterpark.com/

Pala-U Waterfall

The largest national park in Thailand simply can't be explored in one day, so if that's all you have, you might want to start at Pala-U waterfall. Located near the border with Burma and about 1.5 hours from Hua Hin , the waterfall consists of 16 levels and is one of the highest in Thailand. Don't expect to climb it to the top, though. Anything beyond the third level requires an arduous trek meant only for expert hikers and climbers.

Still, you don't need to go beyond the third level to enjoy the magic here. Cool water, deep pools surrounded by a 1,000-year-old forest, and thousands of butterflies are just a little glimpse of what you'll find when you get to the falls. Keep your eyes open for lots of wildlife as well, including gibbons and rare birds.

Want to extend the trip? There are no accommodations available inside the park itself aside from two very rustic campgrounds, but you can overnight at Kaeng Krachan Town, just minutes away. Come back the next day for bird-watching and cave exploring – or hire a park ranger to take you deeper into the rainforest, where trails are trickier to find but wildlife is richer, and you might catch a glimpse of wild elephants, boars, and even leopards.

Wooden walkway through the Pranburi Mangrove Forest

Twenty kilometers from Hua Hin and reachable by car or song-taew (an open, multi-passenger truck taxi), Pranburi Forest Park is home to the largest mangrove forest in Thailand . The highlight here is the two raised wooden boardwalks that twist and turn through thick mangrove growths, over the Pranburi River and all the way to the ocean-all along the way offering peeks of wildlife and even a small fishing village.

Once you're done walking the wooden trails, head to the park's pine-lined beach, just steps away. Because few tourists know about the park, chances are you'll have the beach all to yourself. This is a perfect day trip if you want to see some awe-inspiring scenery and escape the heat of town.

Location: Pak Nam Pran (Pranburi)

Sam Roi Yot Freshwater Marsh

Thailand's largest freshwater marsh is located within Sam Roi National Park-a massive marine national park worth a visit on its own if you have the time to spare. The park is about 60 kilometers from Hua Hin and is home to massive caves, limestone islands, and over 300 different species of migratory birds.

If you can only visit one section of the park, however, the marsh-which is surrounded by limestone peaks and covered in lotuses-should be it. A wooden boardwalk extends across the marsh and leads to seven roofed pavilions that offer breaks from the heat and a chance to appreciate the mirror-like views in the distance. There's a great observation tower for bird-watchers at the entrance of the park, but you'll have a much better chance to see rare birds, such as purple swamphen and spoon-billed sandpipers, up close when walking through the marsh.

Lighthouse replica at the Sam Pan Nam Floating Market

Hua Hin actually has two floating markets. The Hua Hin Floating Market , older and smaller, offers plenty of shopping opportunities, both as you travel around the market in a traditional boat or walk on the long wooden boardwalks that connect the shops. The newer Sam Pan Nam Floating Market offers plenty of shopping, too, with an impressive 200 shops, as well as plenty of boat vendors traveling the man-made lake and canals to offer their fare.

But Sam Pan Nam is also an entertainment venue. There's a miniature train, daily music and cultural shows, and plenty of "Instagram corners" – moored traditional fishing boats you can jump on for a picture, colorful benches, themed restaurants, and more.

If you've been to Plearn Wan, you'll find a similarity in the design: early 20th century-style buildings with traditional shophouses reminiscent of the King Rama VI period. While you can easily come here just for the fun merchandise and photo opportunities, the market also offers boat tours, mouthwatering treats, and a great way to discover what the old Hua Hin would have been like.

Location: Hua Hin Soi 112

Entrance to the Hua Hin Artists Village

Located just a few miles from the energetic beaches is the quiet, tranquil oasis that is Hua Hin Artists Village, also known as Baan Sillapin. One of the original arts centers in Hua Hin, this vibrant collective sits shrouded in beautiful green plants, perched on the edge of a small canal.

The space includes several large galleries of art and antiques, as well as actual artists' studios, where projects are constantly being dreamt up and actualized. Classrooms are available for those who want to take painting and sculpture classes, and a beautiful art-decked café serves delicious coffees and pastries.

Hua Hin Artists Village

The community goes back more than two decades. The land was donated to a well-known local artist who was tasked with promoting art to the community. More than 20 other artists have joined the commune, and today showcase everything from painting and carving to masks, stonework, jewelry, and more.

Address: 299/8 3218 Hin Lek Fai, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77110

Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall

Hua Hin is not short on shopping opportunities, but one of the newest to hit the beach town is the Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall. The latest in luxury shopping, the massive mall is one of the best places to beat the heat in Hua Hin.

The mall has more than 1,000 different labels spanning fashion and beauty, as well as technology and dining. In fact, the Bluport Food Hall is a sprawling space serving cuisine from all over the world. You'll also find a Gourmet Market and standalone restaurants.

This is the department store in Hua Hin for fashion, as well as beauty treatments like haircuts, nail appointments, and a spa.

Address: 8 89 Petchkasem Rd, Nong Kae, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77110

Tamarind Market

Hua Hin's food scene heats up on weekends with the addition of the new Tamarind Market. Right beside the popular Cicada Market, this night market opens on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays just a few blocks back from the beach.

Here, visitors will find more than a dozen stalls selling everything from local Thai dishes, like rich, fragrant Pad Thai, to wood-fired pizzas, sushi, Wagyu burgers, and more. A stage in the market plays host to a rotating calendar of live bands.

Prices here are certainly higher than at more resident-friendly night markets, but this is certainly an energetic and beloved place to grab a filling (and gourmet-level) meal, enjoy outdoor entertainment, and catch up with friends.

6 of the best day trips from Hua Hin

As frequent visitors to Hua Hin will confirm, there are plenty of good reasons to visit Thailand’s original seaside resort. With proximity to the Thai capital and a host of family-friendly activities to choose from, Hua Hin is an ideal location for a beach holiday that can easily be combined with Bangkok for an exciting twin-centre break. And if you can be tempted away from the beach, you will also find that Hua Hin is the perfect base for a day trip to discover a variety of nearby attractions.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

The dramatic limestone mountains of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park fringe the coastline and live up to their name which translates as ‘the mountain with three hundred peaks’. Less than an hour’s drive south of Hua Hin, Khao Sam Roi Yot is a haven for wildlife and a delight for bird-watchers. But you don’t have to be an ornithologist to appreciate the natural beauty of the area with long sandy beaches, epic walks and wonderful views to enjoy.

one day trip hua hin

The park is also home to the famous cave, Tham Phraya Nakhon . This is a popular location for Thai tourists who come here to follow in the footsteps of one of Thailand’s most revered monarchs, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who visited the cave in 1890. A pavilion was subsequently constructed to commemorate the royal visit and the wooden sala provides a striking image as sunlight streams down through the sinkholes above. To reach Tham Phraya Nakhon requires walking up and down a lot of steps, so be prepared to get hot and sweaty and be sure to carry plenty of water with you.

one day trip hua hin

Prachuap Khiri Khan

The amiable seaside town of Prachuap Khiri Khan boasts a classic curved bay bookmarked at both ends by hills and mountains. Although the narrow beach in the centre of this quiet provincial capital isn’t really suitable for swimming or sunbathing, it’s a wonderful location for a stroll along the expansive promenade. If you’re up for a challenge, climb the 396 steps that lead up to the shrine and temple at the top of Khao Chong Krachok (Mirror Mountain) for dazzling views of the coastline below. However, this end of town is not the place to visit if you don’t like monkeys. The mountain and surrounding area is home to hundreds of macaques so don’t carry food with you and keep your bag zipped up. If you can’t be doing with all those monkey shenanigans, walk along the pier to watch locals fishing or pull up a chair at one of the restaurants opposite the promenade and simply relax and enjoy the sea air and wonderful food.

one day trip hua hin

If you do want to hit the beach, there are some lovely stretches of sand just to the south of town at Ao Manao. Bring your passport with you if you want to visit because the bay at Ao Manao is part of a military base and you will be asked to sign in before entering. Frequent minivans ply the route between Hua Hin and Prachuap with a journey time of around ninety minutes. Alternatively, you could take the ordinary train from the photogenic Hua Hin train station for the princely sum of 19 baht and return from Prachuap Khiri Khan by minivan.

Palaces of Phetchaburi

The Hua Hin area has traditionally been a favourite destination for Thai royalty. The association dates back to the early 1920s and the construction of the southern railway which linked Bangkok to Hua Hin and the coast. Before the railway made Hua Hin so convenient to reach, it was Phetchaburi to the north that was a favoured holiday destination for Thai royalty. A collection of summer palaces were constructed in Phetchaburi by different Thai kings during the 1850s and early 1900s. These royal residences are open to the public and are all located within an hour’s drive of Hua Hin.

Situated halfway between Cha Am and Hua Hin, the elegant Maruekhathaiyawan Palace was the summer residence of King Rama VI. The beautiful pastel-coloured teakwood buildings are set amidst leafy grounds and provide a pleasant way to while away a morning or afternoon.

one day trip hua hin

Further north in Phetchaburi are two more royal residences of note. King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) passed away before the construction of his palace, Wang Ban Poun, was completed in 1916. Designed by the German architect, Karl Döhring, the classic building is now a museum and is formally known as Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Royal Palace. A short drive away is the royal hilltop complex at Phra Nakhon Khiri . Completed in 1858 at the behest of King Rama IV, the location is referred to informally as Khao Wang (Palace Hill) where a trio of hilltops host an array of buildings with panoramic views over Phetchaburi.

There are dress regulations in place when visiting royal residences in Thailand, so please remember to dress politely and cover knees and shoulders. Look out too for notices to remove shoes and be aware that photography inside some buildings is prohibited.

Vineyards at Monsoon Valley

When you think of Thailand, the chances are you’re not thinking about award-winning wines. But that is precisely what is on offer when you visit the Monsoon Valley Vineyards in Hua Hin. With a pleasantly surprising selection of wines, excellent food and a scenic setting, Monsoon Valley makes for an enjoyable excursion from Hua Hin.

Thailand is one of the countries that produces New Latitude wine and although climatic conditions restrict the variety of grapes that can be grown here, there is still a good selection of grapes that can be produced including Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz. Monsoon Valley have skilfully created wines that complement Thai food and visitors can enjoy a wine tasting session and take a tour of the vineyard. Monsoon Valley wines can also be found at a number of luxury hotels and resorts across Thailand. If you’re in the UK and that next trip to the Land of Smiles can’t come soon enough, the good news is you can get a taste of Thailand from these UK stockists of Monsoon Valley.

Elephant encounters

Animal lovers can visit the elephant refuge founded by the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). Located a 45 minute drive away from Hua Hin, the refuge employs expert local guides. Visitors can walk with the elephants to the forest before taking them for a cooling dip in the water. In addition to the elephants that are cared for by WFFT, their centre near Hua Hin is also home to a rescue facility that looks after a number of animals including bears, gibbons, macaques and otters. Visitors will also learn more about the issue of animal welfare in South East Asia. Find out more from the WFFT website here .

Approximately 90 minutes south-west of Hua Hin is another chance to encounter elephants. This is Kui Buri National Park and is reputed to be the best location in Thailand to see wild elephants. To minimise the impact on the elephants and other wildlife in the park, there are strict regulations in place for the safari tour.

How to find an ethical elephant sanctuary in Thailand

Historic Kanchanaburi

It takes around three hours by car to travel between Hua Hin and Kanchanaburi so this makes for a long day trip and will require an early start to make the most of the experience. If you visit Kanchanaburi as part of an organised tour, the trip will usually include visits to the Allied War Cemeteries, one of the war museums, the Bridge on the River Kwai and a train ride on the infamous Death Railway . Some tours will also take in a visit to the Erawan Waterfall. Prices and itineraries can vary and because this isn’t a day trip that is feasible by public transport, it’s worth shopping around at a few different tour offices once you are in Hua Hin or ask at your hotel to see what they can do for you.

one day trip hua hin

Day trips to most of the locations listed in this article can be arranged via any tour office in Hua Hin. With air-conditioned minivans and hotel pick-ups, this is the most comfortable and convenient way to visit. If you enjoy cycling, a number of the places detailed above can also be visited with Hua Hin Bicycle Tours . And if you prefer to travel independently, public minivans and local buses are another option to get you to Prachuap Khiri Khan or Phetchaburi.

Hua Hin's top five day trips

one day trip hua hin

Hua Hin’s strategic position on Thailand’s upper gulf coast makes it the ideal base for excursions into the outlying countryside. Awaiting you are national parks honeycombed with caves and teeming with wildlife, vineyards offering a tempting wine-filled day out, little-visited beaches and pagoda-packed provincial towns. All these places make for a straightforward day trip, so what are you waiting for?

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

Hugging the coastline 40km south of Hua Hin , Khao Sam Roi Yot is visited by Thais in their droves. What draws them here is Tham Praya Nakhon , a spectacular, light-filled cave that houses a meeting hall built for King Rama V in 1890. Once you’ve marvelled at this cave there are many other less-visited caverns to explore, glistening with stalactites and stalagmites, such as Tham Kaew and Tham Sai .

The park is a paradise for bird-watchers too – it sits at the intersection of the East Asian and Australian migration routes and is home to 300 different bird species – and you’ll also find Thailand’s largest freshwater marsh here, as well as sandy beaches accessed by boat.

Getting there

A taxi from Hua Hin will cost 1500B for the day. Alternatively, sign up for a tour with Hua Hin Adventure Tour .

Kaeng Krachan National Park

Thailand’s largest national park, Kaeng Krachan is nestled surprisingly close to civilisation, its southern edge a mere 35km from Hua Hin, but sees relatively few visitors, especially during the week. In the mornings, a mist hangs over the park, the peaks of the highest hills poking through it, before clearing to reveal a genuine wilderness: an extension of a huge rain forest that stretches deep into neighbouring Myanmar, complete with waterfalls, tangled jungle trails, a lake and two rivers.

All manner of wildlife roams here: elephant herds, wild deer, leopards, even the odd tiger. The animals you’re most likely to encounter are various varieties of monkeys: gibbons, macaques and langurs, as well as over 400 species of birds and countless different butterflies fluttering around.  And everywhere you look, the park is bursting with extravagant fauna.

Most of the animals lurk deep in the park, making it best to visit here with both transport and a guide who knows the place.

Hua Hin Adventure Tour runs regular trips, some of which offer the option of mountain-biking through the park.

Phetchaburi

A stark contrast with hectic Hua Hin, Phetchaburi is a laidback provincial town jammed with traditional teak shophouses and a staggering number of temples that offer wide-eyed visitors a visible timeline of the different dynasties and kingdoms that have ruled Thailand.

Phra Nakhon Khiri National Park is the place to start your Phetchaburi tour, a royal palace that sits atop a hill with excellent views of the town. Either walk up past the macaque monkeys that infest the place (keep a firm hold of camera bags and don’t bring food with you), or catch the cute tram that chugs up and down the hill. From the top, strike out in almost any direction and you’ll soon bump into temples that date back as far as the 12th century. Must-sees are Wat Kamphaeng Laeng , a relic of the time when the Khmer kingdom stretched deep into Thailand, and the gleaming, all-white Wat Mahathat Worawihan , located in the heart of Phetchaburi’s oldest district whose atmospheric streets are lined with wooden shophouses. End your tour at Phra Ram Ratchaniwet , a stunning art nouveau summer palace built for King Rama V.

Phetchaburi is a 90-minute bus ride (40B) from Hua Hin. Buses leave frequently from near the intersection of Th Phetkasem and Th Chomsin.

Monsoon Valley Vineyard

Tucked away in a valley 45km west of Hua Hin is one of the area’s more unusual sights: a working vineyard in a climate where coconut trees are rather more common than grape-bearing vines. But thanks to some cunning innovations, such as inducing a false winter period by pruning, the Monsoon Valley Vineyard has succeeded in mimicking the way grapes are grown in more traditional wine producing-countries such as France and Italy.

The neatly-landscaped vineyard with traditional wooden houses is surrounded by hills, offering fine, sweeping views, and the wine it produces is designed to complement Thai cuisine, coming in Classic, Premium and Flagship options. There are daily tours, ranging from a ‘wine safari’ jeep ride around the vineyard and some basic tasting, to a more sophisticated option that includes a three-course meal. There’s also an on-site wine bar and bistro. We recommend against taking up the offer of an elephant ride; a completely unnecessary addition here.

Shuttles (300B) to the vineyard leave from the affiliated Hua Hin Hills Wine Cellar Store in Hua Hin at 10.30am and 3pm, returning at 2pm and 6pm respectively.

Hua Hin to Pranburi

If Hua Hin’s long strip of sand is just too crowded for you, then strike out further south. The coast between Hua Hin and Pranburi is lined with beaches, some of them still relatively little-known, and punctuated by dramatic hills and headlands, while tiny islands lie offshore. Popular with upmarket Thais, the area sees far fewer foreigners than Hua Hin itself.

Hat Khao Tao is the first sandy stretch you’ll encounter, overlooked by Khao Tao (Turtle Mountain) and its sizeable hilltop temple. The beach here, 13km south of Hua Hin, is deliciously serene most of the time. A further 7km past it is Hat Sai Noi, one of the best beaches on this part of coast for swimming. But to live the fantasy of having a wide, white sand beach all to yourself, you need to head to Pranburi and the surrounding area. Try the beaches south of Dolphin Bay, itself a very pretty strip of sand, for true seclusion.

Hat Khao Tao and Hat Sai Noi are best accessed by motorbike or taxi from Hua Hin (250B one way). Taxis can also take you further south to Dolphin Bay: expect to pay 500B one-way.
