"Tokyo is like nowhere else on earth, and I love revealing the city's incredible diversity to our guests. Whether you want to explore ancient temples or check out the shopping mecca of Shibuya, there's something for everyone in Tokyo."
Travel Director
Wander through Ameyoko Street Market
We’ll lead the way through this buzzing street market, with almost 200 shops selling everything from clothing and trinkets to fresh fish, spices and sweets. Located along the Yamanote Line tracks, you’ll mingle with the locals seeking out the best bargains, and learn how the market originated as a black market selling candy after WWII.
Explore the center of Asakusa to the Sensoji Buddhist Temple
You’ll feel like you’ve traveled back to the Tokyo of old in the Asakusa as you wander past traditional craft shops and food stalls, before arriving at the staggeringly ancient Sensoji temple. Originally built in 628, and rebuilt countless times since, this is the oldest temple site in Tokyo, and we’ll wander through the beautiful crimson pagoda, woven with incense.
Learn the mesmerizing rhythmic art of Taiko drumming
You’ll dive into the traditional culture of Japan when you join a Local Specialist to discover the soul-stirring art of Taiko drumming. You’ll be amazed at how Taiko performers pound on the large drums in special choreographed movements to form a connection with the musical energy, and you can even have a go at playing the Taiko drums yourself.
Admire the Imperial Palace of Tokyo
Home of the Emperor of Japan, the Imperial Palace is one of the best places to visit in Tokyo. The magnificent palace is spread across three kilometers (almost two miles) of stunning grounds, and we’ll take you on a tour to see the two ornate bridges that form the entrance, and explore the lush Imperial Palace East Gardens, an oasis of lakes and blossom trees.
Pass through the vermilion-lacquered Kaminarimon Gate
You'll love walking through the picturesque Kaminarimon Gate, or the ‘Thunder Gate’ on your Tokyo tour. This Buddhist archway is famed for its huge paper lantern painted in red-and-black to represent thunder and lightning, and the gate leads to the famous Nakamise shopping street where you can soak up the charming old Tokyo atmosphere.
Our top 5 things to do in Tokyo
Our Tokyo tours take you to all the most iconic Tokyo attractions, from the spectacular Imperial Palace to the Sensoji Buddhist Temple with over a thousand years of history.
Edo-Tokyo Museum
This museum may be housed in a futuristic building, but the exhibits tell the fascinating story of Tokyo, or Edo as it was known until 1869. You’ll explore the cultural heritage, political climate and architecture of the Edo Period, with amazing models of towns and life-sized figures that give an insight into what life was like in the ancient Edo Period.
Samurai Museum
Get a blast from Tokyo’s medieval past when you visit the incredible Samurai Museum, with more than 70 exhibits on the history of combat in Japan up until the 16th century. You’ll feel completely immersed in the world of the samurai as you don a kabuto helmet, wear samurai costumes and even see combat reenactments with talented actors.
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Set in the beautiful surrounds of Ueno Park, this fantastic art museum is the perfect place to discover traditional Japanese art forms and the works of famous Japanese artists, from calligraphy and ceramics to sculpture and woodblock prints. The museum also regularly features exhibits of iconic international artists like Van Gogh, El Greco and Da Vinci.
Best museums in Tokyo
You can’t visit this fascinating city without stopping by a few museums, and our Tokyo trips will point you in the direction of the very best institutions.
Edomae sushi
Japanese sushi is one of the most beloved foods around the world, but it's Edomae sushi that has really stood the test of time. First created during the Edo period, this special sushi traditionally only uses fish that has been marinated for a few days and your Tokyo guide will show you where to find the most authentic Edomae sushi in the city.
Unaju (Freshwater Eel over Rice)
This traditional Japanese dish is made with freshwater eel that is prepared in a kabayaki style, where the eel fillets are grilled and basted in a sweet and salty sauce and dusted with powdered sansho (Japanese pepper). Usually served with steamed rice to balance the rich unaju flavor, you have to give this classic dish a try in Tokyo.
These adorable Japanese sweets are a beloved treat in Tokyo, and come in an endless array of varieties, shapes and colors. Whether they’re made with sweet azuki bean paste (anko), rice cakes (mochi), Japanese agar (kanten), rice, flour or sesame paste, you should always enjoy your wagashi with a hot cup of Japanese green tea.
Best food in Tokyo
Tokyo food is on a whole new level and our Tokyo vacations will introduce you to all the unique flavors and dishes from sushi and seafood to sweet cakes.
What to pack for Tokyo
Japanese phrasebook
You’ll find it easier to connect with the locals after learning a few Japanese phrases, and you can start with simple words like konnichiwa (hello) and arigatō (thank you).
Digital maps
Tokyo is an absolute maze of bustling streets and secret alleyways, so download some maps to your phone so you can access them any time you’re exploring the city.
Comfortable slip-ons
In Japan, you must take off your shoes when entering homes, temples, ryokans and traditional restaurants, so bring a pair of sandals you can easily slip in and out of.
Reusable bags
From Nakamise and Ameyoko, to the mega-malls and upmarket boutiques, Tokyo is a shopper’s delight, so bring some reusable bags to carry all your souvenirs.
Japanese yen
The national currency of Japan is the Japanese yen, so come prepared for your Tokyo trip with some cash on hand.

With seven days to spend in Japan, Tokyo beckons with monumental must-see sights and its vibrant pulse of city life. A perfect mix ancient and advanced ideas of Japan, with gleaming skyscrapers including the futuristic Tokyo Skytree towering peaceful landscape gardens and city parks. This cutting-edge metropolis hides a traditional heart that can be explored in the Asakusa district at Sensoji Temple and at the old Imperial Palace gardens. Tokyo has so many wonderful sights that it can easily take up an entire 7- day tour, but we recommend a few day-trips into the surrounding countryside to get immersed into some of the rustic, tranquil landscapes and locations that give travelers a more rich Japan experience. Travel to Hakone, an enchanting landscape of mountains, lakes, and forests contained in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Not far from Hakone is iconic Mount Fuji, whose shapely cone should be admired by every traveler to Japan. Delve into Owakudani, a rocky landscape covered in sulfurous steam roiling out over the primordial caldera from hot springs and rivers. Venture into Nikko to discover opulent Toshogu, which enshrines famed shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Make some time to marvel at the massive seated Buddha of Kotoku-in Shrine in the town of Kamakura. For a more traditional experience, take a week among the UNESCO heritage temples of Kyoto, where history and traditional culture is preserved in such must-sees as the Golden Pavilion’s shimmering phoenix, Kiyomizu Temple’s dramatic stage, and the breathtaking hall of a thousand scarlet torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine. Seven days includes plenty of time to experience some of the attractions of the surrounding area, such as Nara’s wild deer park, Osaka’s iconic castle, and Kobe’s wagyu beef. Seven days is also just the right time for a tour of covering the best of both modern and ancient Japan: both the Tokyo metropolis and the temples of Kyoto. Convenient additional stops include the natural wonders of Hakone and Mount Fuji and the wild deer surrounding Todaiji Temple at Nara.

Absolute;ly loved the tour! Billy was a fantastic guide and very informative about the culture and entertaining.

Take a trip to Tokyo on your Japan vacation.
To really get a feel for the size of the city on a Japanese vacation, it might be a good idea to start with a visit to any one of the three buildings that have viewing platforms all offering amazing panoramic views. These include the Tokyo Tower, the world’s tallest self-supported steel tower Due to the tower's central location, the observation platform offers an interesting view of the city and one can, when visibility allows, see Mount Fuji in the distance. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku has observation decks which are free of charge and which provide good panoramic views of Tokyo and beyond. It had been the tallest building in Tokyo until it was overtaken by the Midtown Tower in 2007. The Tokyo Skytree is a television broadcasting tower and a landmark of Tokyo. It is the tallest building in Japan and was the second-tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion. Again, with favourable conditions, famous landmarks such as Mount Fuji can be seen from the observation platforms on Japan tours.
This is the home of the Emperor and Empress of Japan. Surprisingly, the palace is situated in the very heart of the city and is an oasis of tranquillity amid the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. This castle-like building is surrounded by moats, tree-filled gardens and impressive stone walls. Unfortunately, you can only visit the inner palace grounds two days a year on Japanese tours. However, the attractive Imperial Palace East Garden and Outer Garden which are a part of the palace area are open to the public. The large plaza in front of the Imperial Palace is where visitors can view the Nijubashi, two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds.
This park houses a number of the most important museums and art galleries in the city. They include the Tokyo National Museum with its large collection of national cultural treasures of around 100,000 objects from early Japanese times to the present day such as Buddhist statues, calligraphy, tea ceremony art, swords, armour, and pottery. The National Science Museum houses fascinating exhibits including some on space exploration. The National Museum of Western Art houses an extensive collection of Western art and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum has a collection of works spread over many periods. Another small cultural gem is the Shitamachi Museum which provides a look at Japan in the early 20th century with re-created houses and stores and cultural artefacts. Ueno has a zoo containing more than 300 animals.
This is an old traditional district. Asakusa was once Tokyo's largest pleasure district filled with gangsters, geisha, courtesans, writers, artists, actors and beggars. The main attraction today in this colourful neighbourhood is the Sensoji Buddhist Temple also known as the Asakusa Kannon Temple originally built in the 7th Century and Tokyo's oldest and most visited temple. It is an active temple and always busy. From the temple, you can explore the neighbourhood, especially the shopping street called Nakamise. This a street market with many stalls selling everything from snacks to typical Japanese souvenirs. There are also boutique-style shops in this area which sell more upscale merchandise.
This may not be everyone’s cup of tea on Japan tours, but are a popular tourist attraction and a recommended site. The outer fish market consists of several small retail shops and restaurants situated in narrow lanes. Here you will find all kinds of food-related goods, fresh seafood, and other produce for sale.
In the Harajuku district, you will find the renowned and popular Meiji Shrine which was built in 1920 and dedicated to the first modern Emperor and Empress of Japan at that time. Next to it is a spacious park and gladed forest with attractive paths along which to stroll, an oasis in the middle of this vast city. You can, if you wish, take part in typical Shinto (a branch of Buddhism activities) such as making offerings in the main hall, or writing a wish on an ema (a small plaque) which you subsequently hang up in the shrine. You may be fortunate to see a traditional wedding ceremony take place on the grounds of the shrine. The whole wedding party is often dressed in traditional costumes. These ceremonies are a regular occurrence.
Yasukuni Shrine is a Shinto shrine that commemorates Japan's war dead. The shrine was founded in 1869 with the purpose of enshrining those who have died in war for their country and sacrificed their lives to help build the foundation for a peaceful Japan. Around the shrine, grounds stand hundreds of cherry trees.
Tokyo Disneyland is a theme park that opened in 1983 as the first Disney theme park outside of the United States. Modelled after Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland is made up of seven themed lands and features seasonal decorations and parades.
The Edo-Tokyo Museum is in the Ryogoku district. The museum's permanent exhibition vividly illustrates Tokyo’s past through its exhibits and covers many features of the capital from the Edo Period to relatively recent decades.
Shopping and Dining
Shopping in tokyo.
There are a number of districts offering the shopper a variety of merchandise on Japan travel. The Ginza is home to high-end department stores and designer brand boutiques. Shinjuku has a large number of busy department stores. Shibuyu is where one finds clothing and fashion stores and small boutiques. For electronic goods, head to Akihabara, the electronics mecca.
Dining in Tokyo
For dining and entertainment and dining, there are many districts which offer this. One is Roppongi known as the city's most popular nightlife district among foreigners offering a large number of foreigner-friendly bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
There is certainly much more to discover in this vibrant city time allowing on a Japanese vacation.

Tour Packages
Tour packages are travel plans, which include some or all of the following: transportation , accommodation , meals, guided tours and more. They can be of great value to both, independent and group travelers.
Tour packages range from individual travel plans, which include only a train ticket and hotel reservation and leave everything else to the traveler, to fully guided tours which cover everything from airfare to English speaking guides and meals. Furthermore, there is a range of special interest tours, such as anime , hot spring , hiking or theme park tours.
Many companies inside and outside of Japan offer tour packages. Because the companies purchase tickets and hotel rooms in large bulks, they are able to offer the packages at costs far below the ones available to individual travelers, making tour packages an option worth considering by travelers of all budgets .
