Fit to Fly Certificates

About flysafe, what is a fit to fly certificate, and when is it required.

A ‘fit to fly’ certificate, also called a ‘fit to travel’ certificate or letter, is a medical certificate signed off by a Primary Care Health Clinician that confirms your fitness to fly. It is required for generally all travellers in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 disease.

The ‘hard copy’ certificate is dependant upon i) a healthy physical check-up (some countries do require a minimal physical examination which can include listening to the lungs or similar non-invasive procedure) and ii) a negative COVID-19 test.

For the certificate, we will need your passport names, date of birth, flight time + dates, airline/flight itinerary and destination country to book you in. Late booking fees may apply for appointments requested the next day.

Please note that you will need to check your intended airline and country COVID-19 entry requirements because they are changing continually.

Are there other conditions that may require a Fit to Fly certificate?

If you have a health condition that may affect your heart or lungs, you may need a ‘fit to fly’ letter in order to travel. You may also need a ‘fit to fly’ certificate if you have had a recent surgery that affects the chest, abdominal area, eyes or lungs. The cabin pressure in an aeroplane can result in less oxygen in the blood and these health conditions may be made worse when you fly.

What medical conditions stop you from flying?

The following medical conditions and circumstances may prevent you from flying:

  • Infectious diseases such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) or influenza
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Recent surgery
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Other illnesses (e.g. tonsillitis, chest infection)

Do I need a Fit to Fly certificate for pregnancy?

If you are planning to fly when pregnant, airlines may not allow you to fly if you are 36 weeks pregnant or if you are carrying twins and are in your 32nd week of pregnancy even with a ‘fit to fly’ certificate. This is because there is a risk of going into early labour or having a blood clot. Make sure to check the policy of the airline you’re flying with.

Does a Fit to Fly certificate require a COVID-19 test?

Yes, most ‘fit to fly’ certificates require a COVID-19 PCR Test . Some may only require a blood antibody test while others require a full swab PCR test used to diagnose an active infection. Be sure to check the requirements of your destination before getting assessed for testing.

When should I organise my Fit to Fly appointment?

Please contact us about 5 days before your intended departure. At present, some airlines and destinations require testing and certificates to be issued within 48-96 hours of departure. We advise allowing around 24-48 hours to have the swab performed and results to come back to us.

Time windows are normally given by your airline or the country you are flying to. For example, a 96 hour time window means that your swab needs to be taken within 96 hours of your flight. Time windows (especially 72 hours) can be tight so it is important that you follow advice for the ‘fit to fly’ certification.

How long does a Fit to Fly certificate last?

Your Fit to Fly certificate shows you are fit and able to fly around the time of your flight. If your health condition is long-term, you may need a new health certificate each time you fly. Some airlines and countries may specify how recent your fit to fly certificate must be, otherwise we advise discussing this with our clinic staff.

Trusted by airlines and embassies – Our direct real-time PCR (RT-PCR method) COVID-19 swab tests are fully certified and accredited by New Zealand Medical Laboratories, and this ensures that your test results will be accepted by your airline and embassy.

Different airlines have different policies for when you need a fit to fly certificate. We advise checking with your intended airline before you travel.

What does a positive COVID-19 test mean?

A positive antibody or viral test mean different things, depending on the test which you received:

Antibody Testing – A positive antibody test means your body has made antibodies to help protect against COVID-19. It may not show if you have a current infection and does not mean you have long term immunity. A positive antibody test may require a viral COVID-19 test to ensure you are not currently sick without showing significant symptoms.

Viral Testing – A positive PCR viral test often means you are an active case of COVID-19. If you test positive, be sure to follow local quarantine procedures. Do note, many countries and states will deny entry with proof of a positive COVID-19 PCR viral test in the previous 24-72 hours. If you know or believe you have been exposed to an individual with COVID-19, follow New Zealand guidelines for ongoing management in regard to quarantine or isolation.

What does a negative COVID-19 test mean?

A negative viral or antibody test can indicate:

  • You were probably NOT infected at the time your sample was collected
  • Individuals in the early stages of infection may NOT show positive on the test, this means it is possible to test negative but still show symptoms even days later
  • It does NOT mean you cannot or will not get infected.

If you have had a known exposure to COVID-19 and test negative, PLEASE follow local quarantine and isolation guidelines. Stay home for 14 days after your last contact with an infected individual and watch for a symptoms of COVID-19.

What if my test is unclear or inconclusive?

A small number of tests may come back as unclear or inconclusive. This simply means it was not possible to say if you had the virus when the test was done. Whilst there are a number of reasons why this might have happened, unfortunately it means you will need to be tested again.

How do COVID-19 tests work?

The majority of tests for COVID-19 can be divided into polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or serologic tests. Both of these tests use different kinds of samples to search for different hallmarks of the SARS-CoV-2 virus – and neither of them are exactly perfect. There are two different forms of testing for COVID-19 and each works differently.

Viral Testing – Testing is most often done through either a nasal swab, a throat swab or a saliva sample. These are then analysed to determine if you have an active COVID-19 infection. PCR tests are used to directly detect the presence of an antigen, rather than the presence of the body’s immune response, or antibodies. By detecting viral RNA, which will be present in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease are present, the tests can tell whether or not someone has the virus very early on. PCR gives us a good indication of who is infected.

Antibody Testing – Typically, an antibody test involves taking an amount of blood from the body and testing that blood for the presence of the antibodies that can develop after an infection has been detected by the body’s immune system. Antibody tests are not used to diagnose COVID-19, but to help identify if someone may have come in contact with the virus and it may have infected them. A positive antibody test may require a viral test to check for active infection. A serologic antibody blood test tells us what proportion of the population has been infected. It won’t tell you who is infected, because the antibodies are generated after a week or two, after which time the virus should have been cleared from the system. But it tells you who’s been infected and who should be immune to the virus

What is COVID-19 and how is it caused?

COVID-19 is the disease caused by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. The World Health Organization (WHO) first learned of this new virus on 31 December 2019, following a report of a cluster of cases of ‘viral pneumonia’ in Wuhan, People’s Republic of China.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  • Fatigue, and

There are other, less common, symptoms that may affect people including:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Conjunctivitis (Inflammation or infection of the eyeball and the inner eyelid)
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Loss of smell
  • Loss of taste
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle or joint pain,
  • Skin rashes,
  • Chills or dizziness.

Symptoms of severe COVID‐19 disease include: Shortness of breath, Loss of appetite, Confusion, Persistent pain or pressure in the chest, High temperature (above 38 °C).

Other less common symptoms are: Irritability, Confusion, Reduced consciousness (sometimes associated with seizures), Anxiety, Depression, Sleep disorders, More severe and rare neurological complications such as strokes, brain inflammation, delirium and nerve damage.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms you should follow the advice of the NZ Ministry of Health Guidelines . Airlines have the right to refuse travel to anyone they believe is not fit to fly so if staff suspect you have symptoms such as a fever or new persistent cough you may be turned away.

How is the COVID-19 virus transmitted?

Current evidence suggests that transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs primarily between people through direct, indirect, or close contact with infected people through infected secretions such as saliva and respiratory secretions, or through their respiratory droplets, which are expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks or sings. A person who is positive can transmit the disease up to 48hrs before they even have symptoms. COVID-19 can also be picked up from surfaces contaminated by a person with the infection.

What are the tests required to diagnose COVID-19?

There are currently available either nasopharyngeal (nose inserted swab to test for virus at the back of the nose and throat, and considered the most effective way to diagnose the disease), laryngeal swab (Mouth inserted swab to test for virus at the back of the throat) and a blood test to check either recent or past exposure to the virus.

I want to find out if I had COVID-19 in the past. Can I take a test?

Antibody tests can tell us whether someone has had an infection in the past, even if they have not had symptoms. Also known as serological tests and usually done on a blood sample, these tests detect antibodies produced in response to an infection. In most people, antibodies start to develop days to weeks after an infection and can indicate exposure to the disease.

Will the nose or throat swab hurt?

The swab-taking can sometimes be a little uncomfortable because it is important that the appropriate areas are swabbed in order to maximise the accuracy of the test.

Are there vaccines available to prevent COVID-19?

Yes. There are three COVID-19 vaccines for which certain national regulatory authorities have authorized the use. Large studies of potential and approved vaccine candidates efficacy and safety results, including these three (from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca ), have been publicly reported through press releases but only one (AstraZeneca) has published results in the peer reviewed literature. There are many potential COVID-19 vaccine candidates currently in development. It is likely that additional candidates will be submitted to regulatory authorities for approval.

What should I do if my COVID-19 PCR test is positive?

If your COVID-19 PCR test is positive, please follow the national New Zealand Ministry of Health Guidelines . You and your household will need to isolate and cancel your travel. Phone your doctor but DO NOT visit a health centre such as a hospital, Clinic, GP surgery or Pharmacy unless instructed.

Covid-19 and international travel.

This COVID-19 travel advice applies to all international travel, in all destinations. If you are planning international travel at this time, please read this advice alongside our destination specific travel advisories .

In line with step two of the Government’s 5-step plan to re-open New Zealand’s borders , at 11:59pm on Friday 4 th of March 2022, we removed the SafeTravel global ‘Do not travel’ advisory and returned to issuing destination-specific travel advisories.

While our borders have reopened, it is important to remember that international travel is different now. Travel has become more complicated and there are additional things you need to think about when planning your trip overseas.

Although many countries now have increasingly high vaccination numbers, any country could continue to experience a sudden outbreak of COVID-19. This may include the emergence of new variants of concern, which may lead to the sudden imposition of strict travel restrictions or health measures that could impact upon your travel plans, and your travel insurance. If you’re heading overseas, it’s important you think about the risks of contracting COVID-19 in your destination. This may mean that you have to remain overseas for longer than you had planned, which may have financial implications for you. We recommend that all New Zealand travellers make contingency plans in case disruptions mean you need to support yourself overseas for longer than you planned.

All travellers also need to be aware of the requirements for returning to New Zealand. You can read more about that on the Unite Against COVID-19 website here .

We advise that New Zealanders overseas follow local health advice and use basic hygiene measures to minimise the risk of exposure. The Ministry of Health provides useful information about protecting yourself and others from COVID-19 .

Vaccination

We encourage all New Zealanders to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before travelling anywhere overseas.   From February 28, 2024, International Travel COVID-19 Vaccination Certificates will no longer be available for New Zealanders travelling overseas, as most countries have now lifted their COVID-19 vaccination entry requirements.

There are alternative vaccination records available if people need them for international travel purposes as some countries and territories may still need you to show proof of vaccination.

The My Health Record web portal enables users to generate a record of all their vaccinations, including their COVID-19 vaccinations, and print these if needed.

Travellers are encouraged to check the vaccination entry requirements of their destinations before travelling.

You’re at greater risk of contracting COVID-19 if you’re unvaccinated. Sudden outbreaks of COVID-19 pose an increased risk to you, particularly in destinations with low vaccination coverage. Health services can also be difficult to access in these circumstances.

Other countries border requirements

While many countries and territories have opened up their borders to tourists again, border requirements may be different for each destination. These requirements may also change at short notice, so before you go, it’s important that you are well informed about the requirements for each of the destinations you are travelling to. This includes checking border requirements for the countries you’re visiting or transiting through, and COVID-19 testing and vaccine requirements of airlines and other transport providers.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade cannot provide immigration advice about entry, transit or exit requirements for other countries and territories. The border authorities of the country or territory you are travelling to determine your eligibility for entry. Consult the official website or the nearest embassy/consulate of your country or territory of destination to find out about any border controls that may apply to you, before travelling.

Obtaining comprehensive travel insurance is more important than ever. If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

We understand that some travel insurance policies may cover some COVID-19-related claims. However, it’s really important to check the details of your travel insurance as this varies from provider to provider. Your travel insurance may be affected by COVID-19 and may not necessarily cover travel disruption or medical expenses, particularly in the event your travel is disrupted due to government imposed restrictions. New Zealand travel insurance providers usually don’t cover travel to countries or territories set at SafeTravel’s highest travel advisory level “Do not travel” (level 4 of 4), and there may be limited cover for destinations set at “Avoid non-essential travel” (level 3 of 4).

Contact your travel insurer if you have questions or concerns about whether you are covered by your insurance policy for any potential COVID-19 related expenses. We also recommend that you clearly understand how sudden changes to the international travel environment might affect your cover. You also need to ensure that you meet any compulsory insurance requirements put in place by airlines and other transport providers, as well as the border authorities at each of your destinations.

Before you go:

  • Read our travel advice for each of the destinations you plan on travelling to. Our country specific advisories provide an essential source of information about other safety and security risks while travelling overseas
  • Register your travel plans on SafeTravel so we can send you important information following an emergency
  • Visit the  Unite Against COVID-19 website and make sure you understand New Zealand’s entry requirements for when you return
  • Obtain your  International Travel Vaccination Certificate and understand how your vaccination status might affect your travel
  • And finally, take out comprehensive travel insurance and check your travel insurance policy carefully to see what’s covered, particularly in the event your travel is disrupted due to unexpected government imposed restrictions

How much does a pre-departure Covid test cost in New Zealand?

How much should a pre-departure test cost?

It's likely we're all a bit rusty on budgeting for foreign holidays but post-pandemic travel may have a range of new costs to factor in.

It turns out these may vary wildly as to where you live and your port of departure.

"Quarantine free travel for vaccinated travellers who return a negative test," was outlined as the final goal of the Government's four step plan to reconnect Kiwis with the rest of the world.

After a two-year border pause there are signs that a return to regular international travel may soon be on the horizon. However, it is likely to look unlike anything experienced pre-pandemic and carry a number of new costs.

Along with vaccine records, pre-departure tests, sometimes called "fit-to-fly" tests are a common entry requirement for most countries.

On Monday the US announced a remarkably similar plan to open its borders to vaccinated travellers from November. Likewise, the UK's streamlined Covid travel restrictions point to an exciting direction of travel.

However, 72-hour pre-departure testing looks like a feature that will stick around for a while.

Unlike general community tests pre-departure Covid screening has to be paid for by the traveller.

Currently these range anywhere from $140 plus collection fees to the upper limits of $435 for a last-minute, rapid turnaround from a travel clinic. In many cases the tests are being processed by the same labs

From a range of 10 New Zealand testing centres and travel clinics serving international travellers - the average price including doctors fees was $258 per test.

You could get an airfare to Aussie for less, pre-pandemic.

$200 a pop: What is the cost of a covid-19 PCR test? Photo / Prasesh Shiwakoti, Unsplash

The cost of pre-departure testing also varied by region. For passengers flying out of Auckland you could be paying an average of $245 versus $219 in Wellington, or $192 for a "fit-to-fly" test in Christchurch.

With re-tests and post arrival tests required by other countries, the costs quickly stack up.

It doesn't get any cheaper or more standardised in other countries. Last month the UK's competition watchdog called for "immediate" investigation of price gouging among PCR testing centres.

The 12 August report from the Competition and Markets Authority found the average price of a test was $145, varying wildly from as little as $39 to $970 for a test result.

While the cost of testing should stabilise as overseas travel becomes more common, New Zealand's labs are already stretched by current demand.

Labtests in Auckland, the only lab processing pre-departure tests and general community swabs in the region, says that it has never offered an expedited service.

"We cannot guarantee pre-departure test results for travellers in less than 72 hours from time of collection," says Chris Davey, GM of Labtests.

"Paying a third party for an expedited services doesn't get the laboratory to work any quicker."

Looking at data from Denmark and Singapore, labs are modelling demand for a time when Covid is endemic in New Zealand and travel more common. However, due to the logistics of travel testing, scaling up production is unlikely to drastically lower prices.

While PCR tests are common, additional requirements for some destinations also carry extra costs. Pre-departure IgM Antibody tests in China - for example - make it a more expensive destination.

"We won't ever get to the point where test capacity limits travel," she says, but they will be required for some time. "It will be part of life."

While travel bubbles with Australia and the Cook Islands remain paused, it is unclear if there will be new testing requirements when travel resumes.

This month Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown said that there would be new Covid vaccine requirements when Kiwis were welcomed back including proof of vaccination.

Covid Response and the Ministry of Health warns travellers that tests are also a legal requirement for most countries that are transit hubs and tells travellers to contact the consulate of their destinations.

"You should check airline and country pre-departure testing requirements for every country you are going through on your journey to make sure you comply with them all, not just New Zealand's."

Testing is going to be an important part of reopening borders, but it has also been identified as a lucrative industry.

Lab and service fees for a single 787 Dreamliner departing New Zealand would be over $60,000.

Please check the requirements of the country you are travelling to by contacting their local high commission, embassy or consulate in New Zealand and tell us these requirements when making your appointment. Country specific requirements will include:

  • Type of test required - this is usually a PCR test or a RAT (Rapid Antigen Test - also known as antigen test or lateral flow device test)
  • Timeframe test is required - this is usually within 72 hours for a PCR test and within 24 hours for a RAT

2. Requesting a certified proof of a negative COVID-19 test result for any other purpose

Please check the requirements of the requestor and specify these requirements when you make the booking. Specifications generally include:

  • Type of test required (PCR test or Rapid Antigen Test)
  • Timeframe required

You can request a certified COVID-19 test at one of the participating medical centres listed below.

Important to note  before  your test appointment

  • Know your specific testing requirements - for international travellers this will include airline requirements and your destination country's requirements (including any stop overs). We will support you to ensure all requirements are met, however it is your responsibility to know and communicate your specific testing requirements
  • Book well in advance - to ensure your testing requirements can be met
  • Bring your passport to the appointment - this is required to verify your identity and for your Certified Proof of COVID-19 Test Result Paperwork   - driver's licence or other forms of ID are not accepted

Certified Testing Fees

There is a cost for this service and this will vary between medical centres - please contact the practice directly to enquire about pricing and to book your travel test appointment.

If your RAT  result is positive , you will not be issued a Certified Proof of COVID-19 Test Result. Instead you will be required to follow current isolation rules. Your travel will need to be postponed until the required isolation and wait period is over. You will need to also record your positive result to your  My COVID Record  or call  0800 222 478  and press 3 to report.  If your PCR test result is positive this may be a result of a previous infection. In these cases we suggest a consult with the doctor as a Medical Clearance Certificate may be appropriate.

Most people with COVID-19 will experience mild or medium symptoms and be able to successfully manage their illness themselves.

Download and fill out this patient consent form. Bring it to your appointment with your Passport.

How To Get A Covid Test For Travel To New Zealand + Discount

Immanuel Debeer | 01/07/2021

If covid (or rather the trigger-friendly bureaucrats) took a massive dump on your New Zealand holiday plans, don’t worry; you’re not alone! The bubble has been suspended until July 7th, with the exception of NSW, QLD, NT, and WA, which will be reviewed next Tuesday (July 6th).

Once travel kicks off again, there will be a new rule: covid testing for travel.

Like many countries worldwide, New Zealand now requires a negative PCR or RT-PCR test before you are allowed to board a flight, including flights coming from Australia.

Note: Rapid Antigen tests are much cheaper and faster, but they are NOT accepted for travel to New Zealand.

The test will need to be done no earlier than 72 hours before your scheduled departure. Going with the whole fam? No kids aren’t exempt unless they are under 2 years old. For example, A family of 4 will be up for an extra $600 or so dollaridoos before they even hit the ski slopes in NZ!

Upon arrival in New Zealand, customs will check your certificate to verify you are indeed not bringing in the plague.

In this post:

What happens if my flight is delayed?

How to get a covid test for travel, cheapest coivd testing, nsw covid travel testing:, vic covid travel testing:, qld covid testing for travel:, wa covid testing for travel:, sa covid testing for travel:, nt covid testing for travel:, tas covid testing for travel:, act covid testing for travel:.

If your flight is delayed, the validity of your certificate will be extended to 96 hours.

Since this whole thing is new for most of us, the natural question is: where, how, and how much?

If you’re thinking about going in for a free test in one of the many drive-through clinics, you’re out of luck. Since those tests don’t provide you with a certificate, you will need to book in a private test and pay top dollar for the privilege.

The going rate for many clinics is between $100 – $150, so we looked around and got the details for all Australian states. Based on my research, test results take 24h to come back. I’ve listed the clinics online, which I found had an easy order process. There are a few more out there who didn’t have transparent pricing or booking systems, so this list isn’t all-inclusive.

While Histo Path is the cheapest, this only works for those in Sydney (since it’s available at the airport), for other states we’ve partnered with Healius who are offering Flight Hacks readers a $20 discount (and they have locations all around Australia) when you book your test via https://consumer.healius.com.au/ and enter promo code “ flthacks ” at the checkout. This brings the price down from $150 to $130! Full disclaimer: Flight Hacks receives a small commission when you book a test using our discount code; win-win!

Thanks for summarising – very helpful. My brother used the Healius option and it worked well. C

Good to hear Chris! I usually have a VPN on so I think their site was blocking me, however, it’s working now. Cheers, Immanuel.

Hi Immanuel. You’ve confused me a little. Why does each pathology have two prices? (eg $150 or $ 210 with Jealous). I’m asking as I need to pass this onto a large group and they’ll no doubt ask! 🙂

Hi Paul, the higher prices are if you want to include an antibody test (to see if you had covid in the past). It’s not required for NZ but countries such as China require this in addition to PCR. Cheers, Immanuel.

Histopath is now available at Melbourne airport with 1hr turnaround for $150…Any testimonials for these guys at all?

Personally, I would do the test in advance because leaving it until last minute could be stressful. No doubt they do a good job. Just go with the cheapest option and you will be fine.

New Zealand Reopens Its Borders: What You Need To Know Before you Travel to NZ

Tourist in a New Zealand mountain landscape.

New Zealand is known for its majestic nature, the Māori indigenous culture, its friendly people, and its breathtaking beaches . Plus, it’s been the backdrop of many Hollywood blockbusters, such as the Lord of the Rings saga.

After two years of Covid lockdown, finally, New Zealand reopens its borders to welcome tourists from all over the world. If you’ve been planning to visit the land of Kiwis, this post is for you.

Today, we’ll discuss:

  • Who can travel to NZ
  • What you need to enter
  • Local restrictions
  • What will happen next

Let’s get started!

Who Can Travel to NZ?

Recently, New Zealand’s authorities have decided to relax Covid-19 restrictions. They’re dividing the country’s reopening into various steps. Right now, only New Zealand citizens and residents can travel into the country. However, starting April 13, fully vaccinated Australians will be able to enter without having to quarantine.

From May 2, travelers from 60 nations will be able to visit as well. Visa waiver countries include:

  • South Korea

You can find the full list on the NZ immigration website .

If you’re traveling from any of these nations, although you won’t need a visa to enter NZ, you’ll need to request an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). This permit will allow you to visit the country for up to 3 months, or up to 6 if you’re a UK citizen.

Additionally, if your country isn’t on the list and you already hold a New Zealand visa, you will be eligible to enter on May 1st.

New Zealand Entry Requirements

To enter the land of the Kiwis, you’ll need to:

  • Get a pre-departure test
  • Confirm your vaccination status
  • Fill out a traveler declaration

Download the NZ Covid Tracer App

Let’s take a closer look.

Pre-departure Testing

Individuals traveling to NZ must get a Covid-19 test before the first international leg of their trip. You may choose one of the following types of tests:

  • A PCR Test, taken 48 hours before your departure
  • A Rapid Antigen Test, supervised by a healthcare professional, taken 24 hours before your departure
  • A LAMP test, supervised by a healthcare professional, performed 24 hours before your departure

Your test results must include your full name and an identifier (birthdate or passport number). Additionally, they must specify the type of test you took and the date it was performed. Your test results must be in English and can be presented in paper or digital form.

Children under the age of 2 are exempt from this requirement. You may also be exempted if, for example, you can’t get tested due to medical reasons, or if you’re coming from Ukraine. You can learn more about exemptions on NZ’s official Covid website .

Confirm Your Vaccination Status

Unvaccinated travelers aren’t currently allowed to enter NZ. As of this writing, New Zealand has approved 35 Covid vaccines.

Some of them are:

  • Sputnik light
  • AstraZeneca

You can check the full list of approved vaccines on New Zealand’s official Covid website.

Moreover, if you arrive in NZ without being fully vaccinated you may face a fine of up to $4000. New Zealand citizens and children under 16 are exempted from vaccination requirements.

Fill out a Traveler Declaration

All travelers need to complete a traveler form before traveling to NZ. By doing so, you’ll get a New Zealand Traveller Pass, which you’ll need to show during your check-in at the Airport, and to Customs after your landing. You can present it in paper or digital form.

The NZ Ministry of Health has developed a Covid-19 contact tracing app to help contain the virus. This app will tell you whether you’ve recently been in contact with someone infected while keeping everyone’s data private.

Local Covid-19 Restrictions

Local measures in NZ are dictated by a traffic light system: Red, orange, and green. As of this writing, everything is in red.

This means that you must wear a mask indoors and maintain social distance. No lockdowns are in place, so you can travel around NZ, have access to cafes and bars, and go to events. However, some venues have capacity limits. Schools and workplaces are open.

Vaccine Certificate

It’s no longer necessary to prove your vaccination status to access venues in New Zealand. Still, some businesses may still ask to see your vaccine certificate.

However, venues providing essential services can’t ask you for a vaccine certificate to access them. These facilities are:

  • Supermarkets
  • Public transport

When Will New Zealand Reopen Completely?

Travel requirements worldwide are getting increasingly flexible. And New Zealand is no exception. In fact, borders are expected to go back to normal in October .

Still, although most Covid measures worldwide are being lifted, getting tested remains key. By getting tested, you can travel across the globe while complying with local regulations and keeping everyone around you safe.

Wondering where to get tested? Discover Covid testing locations near you with our worldwide directory.

Start your recommended 5 day isolation period

If you test positive for COVID-19, it is recommended you isolate for at least 5 days, even if you only have mild symptoms. This is to prevent spreading COVID-19 to other people. You would start your isolation at Day 0 — this is the day your symptoms started or when you tested positive, whichever came first.

Isolation means not leaving your house and not going to work or school. It also means staying away from others in your household as much as possible.

If you need to go out during your recommended isolation period, it is recommended you wear a face mask. We also recommend you wear a mask when you are in close contact with others, including in your own household.

Ways to avoid spreading COVID-19

  • Do not go to work or school.
  • Avoid public places — wear a mask if you need to go out.
  • Where possible, avoid contact with people in your household.
  • Sleep by yourself if you can and limit the time you spend in shared spaces.
  • If you cannot avoid contact in your house, try to stay at least 2 metres apart and wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth when near others.
  • Get deliveries, such as food and medicine from whānau and friends, or by ordering supplies online. Identify a safe drop-off point outside the house to leave supplies.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly. This includes things you touch often, like door handles, light switches and phones.
  • Do your own laundry.
  • Open windows to increase fresh air flow inside. The risk of spreading COVID-19 is highest in crowded and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

Report your test result

It is still important to report your positive rapid antigen test (RAT) online or by calling the helpline. This is so you can be connected with any help and support you might need.

  • Online: My Health Record (external link) ↗
  • Call: 0800 222 478

If you had a PCR test, your results are reported automatically. You will get a text message with your result.

Receive a text message from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora

After you report your result, Health New Zealand sends you a text message from the official 2328 or 2648 numbers to confirm your positive result.

The text also has information about antiviral medicines and support options but no longer includes an access code.

Taking leave from work

If your employer asks to see proof that you are isolating, you can use this text message. You do not need a medical certificate from a doctor.

Get COVID-19 antiviral medicines

Some people who are at a very high risk of developing serious illness, and who have tested positive, are eligible for free antivirals to treat COVID-19. You may also be eligible if you have symptoms, and have had close contact with someone who has tested positive.

Find out who is eligible and what to do.

COVID-19 medicines

Some people, like older people and kaumātua, and those with other health conditions, are at a higher risk of becoming seriously unwell with COVID-19 and needing hospital care.

People at risk of severe illness from COVID-19

If you are at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19, talk to your doctor or your usual healthcare provider about your medical condition and how to best manage it.

If you have COVID-19, your pregnancy care may be provided through telehealth while you are infectious.

Let your midwife or doctor know you have COVID-19. If you need any extra care depending on your risk factors, or how well you are managing any symptoms, they can help organise it for you.

Maternity care will always be available to those who need it.

If you are pregnant and get COVID-19, you should contact your midwife or doctor straight away if you experience any of these things:

  • your pēpi is moving less than usual or not at all, there is a change in baby’s usual pattern
  • bleeding from the vagina, or leaking fluid from the vagina
  • headache that does not go away
  • shortness of breath when resting or lying down
  • feeling like you cannot cope with your symptoms at home
  • a temperature higher than 37.5 degrees
  • feeling really tired
  • feeling very anxious or worried
  • feeling unsafe at any time.

It is rare for babies to get COVID-19 during the pregnancy or birth. Babies who do get it mostly have mild symptoms or none at all.

If you have COVID-19 and are breastfeeding, you can continue to breastfeed while taking precautions.

To reduce the risk of spreading the virus while breastfeeding, you should:

  • wear a surgical face mask
  • wash your hands thoroughly before feeding
  • avoid kissing and touching your baby’s face.

If you are too unwell to breastfeed, you can express your milk and give it to your pēpi in a bottle. Make sure you still follow the precautions above.

There is no evidence of transmission of the virus through breast milk. Your midwife or doctor can provide further advice about breastfeeding when you have COVID-19.

If you need to see a healthcare provider while you have COVID-19, phone ahead and let them know you have COVID-19. You should wear a well-fitting face mask can stop infectious particles from spreading to others.

There are things you can do to keep your tamariki comfortable while they recover.

  • If they do not want to drink water, try ice blocks, watered-down juice or electrolyte solution.
  • Drinking is important to stop dehydration.
  • Encourage them to keep drinking their normal amount.
  • Keep an eye on their nappies or toilet breaks to make sure they are drinking enough.
  • They may be vomiting, have diarrhoea, tummy pain, and muscle aches.
  • They also may not want to eat much, which is alright for a short time.
  • Rest is important.
  • Tamariki may still need to take it easy for a while to let their bodies recover.

Recovering from COVID-19

A small number of older tamariki may have symptoms that last longer. This is sometimes called long COVID.

The KidsHealth website has information on:

  • what is known about long COVID
  • how to care for a child who is taking longer to get better.

Mental health services and support

Finish your recommended 5 days of isolation

After completing your 5 days of recommended isolation, if your symptoms have resolved and you feel well, you can return to your normal activities.

Up until 10 days after your symptoms started or you tested positive, we recommend you wear a mask if you need to:

  • visit a healthcare facility
  • visit an aged residential care facility
  • have contact with anyone at risk of getting seriously unwell with COVID-19.

This is because some people are infectious for up to 10 days.

Returning to school or work

You do not need a negative RAT result to return to work or school. But you should discuss your return to work with your employer or school principal. Your employer or school may ask you to take additional precautions if you still feel sick.

If someone you live with gets COVID-19

If you have had COVID-19 within the last 28 days, and someone in your household tests positive, you are not considered to be a household contact.

If it has been 29 days or longer since your COVID-19 infection and someone in your household tests positive, you should follow recommended guidance for household contacts.

What household contacts should do

If you still feel unwell at the end of your isolation period

If you still feel unwell, we recommend you stay home until you have recovered. If you do need to leave the house, we recommend you wear a mask and do not:

  • visit a healthcare facility (other than to seek medical attention)

You do not need to do another RAT after testing positive. But if you are concerned that you may still be infectious after 5 days, a negative RAT is a good indication you are unlikely to be infectious.

You may still wish to wear a mask if you have contact with someone at risk of serious illness. Some facilities may still require all visitors to wear masks.

You may receive a text message confirming your isolation period has ended. You do not need to wait for an official message to leave isolation.

After COVID-19

You should expect to recover from the first signs and symptoms of COVID-19 within 2 to 4 weeks.

After isolation, make sure you rest and eat well. Your body will need time to get back to your normal exercise levels.

You should be back to all activities you were doing before COVID-19 within 12 weeks.

Long COVID is the term used to describe the effects of COVID-19 that last longer than 12 weeks.

Anyone can develop long COVID, but it is more common if you had severe symptoms when you first got sick.

Find out the symptoms of long COVID and how you can manage them.

From 1 May, New Zealand will finally lift the international travel ban that has been in place for more than two years.

Fully vaccinated British tourists will be allowed back into the country, along with travellers from 59 other “visa-waiver” countries, provided they abide by the entry requirements.

“We’re ready to welcome the world back,” said the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, of the long-awaited reopening.

But do you need to be vaccinated to visit? And what other Covid rules remain in place? Here’s everything travellers need to know.

What are the rules at the moment?

New Zealand kicked off a phased reopening from February, when it began letting citizens back into the country minus an onerous stint in hotel quarantine.

As of 13 April, vaccinated Australians have also been permitted entry .

At present, the following people can enter New Zealand from anywhere in the world and self-test on arrival:

  • Vaccinated and unvaccinated New Zealand citizens
  • Vaccinated New Zealand residents
  • Vaccinated Australian citizens and permanent residents
  • Current temporary work and student visa holders, with a valid visa who can still meet their visa requirements – this includes both visa holders currently offshore, and those in New Zealand who choose to travel overseas and wish to return
  • Up to 5,000 international students, for semester 2
  • Vaccinated travellers with a border exception
  • Vaccinated travellers on a working holiday scheme
  • Other vaccinated eligible travellers under current border settings

When are Brits allowed into New Zealand?

From 11.59pm on 1 May – that’s the date and time from which fully vaccinated British tourists and people visiting family and friends can begin to arrive.

Visitors from the other 59 countries which don’t require a visa (”visa waiver” visitors) will be allowed in from the same date, as will travellers from other countries who already hold a valid visitor visa.

Do I need to be fully vaccinated to visit New Zealand?

Yes. Only fully vaccinated international travellers will be allowed in. However, children aged 16 and under are exempt, as are those who can prove they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, plus New Zealand citizens.

To count as “fully vaccinated”, you must have had a full course of an approved Covid-19 vaccine – that means two doses of the vaccines administered in the UK (Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca) or one dose of a one-shot vaccine such as Johnson and Johnson.

You can have a combination of different vaccines if that combination is an approved course in the country you received them.

Do I need to take a Covid test to get into New Zealand?

Yes – several of them, in fact. Travellers to New Zealand will have to take three Covid tests: one before departure, another on entry and a third taken five or six days after arrival.

The pre-departure test can be a PCR administered no more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of your first international flight to New Zealand; or a supervised rapid antigen or supervised LAMP test administered no more than 24 hours before the scheduled departure of your first international flight to New Zealand.

Travellers are then given two rapid antigen tests on arrival to be self-administered on day 0 or 1 and day five or six of their stay.

Children under six months do not need to self-test on arrival.

Passengers must also must meet the rules for the nation in which they change planes – there are no longer direct flights between the UK and New Zealand.

Do I need to quarantine?

Quarantine is no longer necessary for vaccinated travellers, provided their post-arrival Covid tests are negative.

If you have travelled to New Zealand for a holiday or other temporary stay and test positive after being there for seven days or longer, you need to:

  • Isolate for seven days
  • Source your own accommodation and pay for this (and meet your other costs)
  • Pay for your healthcare costs

What are the other entry requirements for Brits travelling to New Zealand?

Visitors must apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) prior to arriving in New Zealand, and pay NZ$35 ($18) for the International Visitor Levy.

What are the Covid rules on the ground?

New Zealand has been using a traffic light system; the entire country is currently classed as Orange. This means wearing a face mask on all public transport and domestic flights in New Zealand is legally required. Detailed guidance on face mask use, and the current traffic light setting, can be found on the New Zealand Government Covid-19 website .

For domestic flights within New Zealand, airlines may require you to show proof of a full Covid-19 vaccination status or a negative test result before boarding. The test must be taken no more than 72 hours before your journey.
