Tasmania Discovery Tour from Hobart to Russell Falls, Lake St.Clair, Queenstown and Strahan

We depart Hobart by 8am and drive to the unspoilt wilderness of Mount Field National Park. Take an easy and stunning walk through giant green rain forests arriving at Russell Falls, the most photographed waterfall in Tasmania. Our next stop takes us to the Highlands of Tasmania, a hydroelectric power station in Tarraleah. Read the excellent signage and technical details how these 290-meter-long hydro pipes work or simply enjoy the views over the valley.

We continue along the Lyell Highway and visit the incredible “Wall in the Wilderness”. Marvel at Greg Duncan’s masterpiece telling the history of the harsh Central Highlands region. Not far from here we discover Lake St. Clair, the deepest lake of Australia. Visit the park centre and experience the beauty of the Watersmeet Walk. Our final leg takes us to our overnight stay in Queenstown the once richest mining town of the world. (Day 1 Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Queenstown)

Today take a leisurely walk around Queenstown with its historic buildings, memorials, and museum. Before lunch we step back in time on a heritage steam train journey to Lynchford. Enjoy the premium seating in the Wilderness Class including Tasmanian sparkling wine or juice and Devonshire Tea served onboard. Disembark at Lynchford Station, only accessible by passengers onboard the West Coast Railway, and walk in the footsteps of pioneers and adventurers. Pan for gold or take in the Lynchford Pioneers Room before our return journey with more live commentary and stories of the pioneering folk.

All back on board the bus we travel to the historic township of Strahan and check into our accommodation for the next two nights. Tonight, we see the remarkably successful outdoor theatre production “The Ship That Never Was”. Based on the true story of a great escape from notorious Sarah Island the professional theatre production is live, hilarious, and very entertaining. Back at Strahan Village indulge in a delicious Seafood Buffet Dinner at one of the best restaurants in Strahan. (Day 2 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Strahan)

This morning we board the Spirit of the Wild for the Gordon River World Heritage Cruise. Experience the West Coast’s pristine wilderness in luxury with seating on the upper premier deck. We meander through Hells Gate, 2000-year-old rainforests and a 190-year-old convict settlement. Indulge in tasty snacks, a delicious lunch, and endless drinks. After our tranquil cruise stroll the streets of Strahan and soak up the history and sights at your own leisure. With so much local seafood and culinary delights on offer at the View 42◦ Restaurant we savour the flavours at the buffet dinner for a second time. (Day 3 Breakfast on board the Spirit of the Wild, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Strahan)

Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake, Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary, Stanley, The Nut and Highfield Historic Site

We depart early and venture to the wild northern end of Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park. Upon arrival meet the iconic Tasmanian Devil on an exclusive behind -the-scenes tour at the Devils Cradle Sanctuary. Gain a greater understanding of this unique and endangered animal along with other Australian wildlife. After our cafe lunch discover the World Heritage Area breathing in the pure air with a walk to the picturesque boat shed at Dove Lake.

Our next walk departs from Ronny Creek, the start of the Overland Track. This quite easy stretch of the Overland is following a serpentine boardwalk and is one of the best walks to see wombats in the wild. For another magical experience, stroll through button grass moorland along the edges of Pencil Pine Creek on the Enchanted Walk. Finish the day with a fabulous dinner and spend the night at our 4-star Cradle Mountain accommodation. (Day 4 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight at Cradle Mountain Hotel)

No tour of Tasmania is complete without a stay in Stanley, a charming fishing village. We arrive in time for lunch and then take a self-guided tour of the Highfield Historic Site. Highfield offers a wonderful historic experience with its beautiful old buildings, delightful gardens and views of the Nut and Stanley village. Having seen the Nut from the distance we now make our way to the top of The Nut. Take the exhilarating climb to the summit or enjoy an easy chairlift journey up and down the most photo-graphed land formation of Tasmania. Whether you have hiked or taken the Nut’s chairlift to the top, either way the spectacular views and peaceful air will be worth the effort.

To make the most of our time in Stanley we are staying overnight at two waterfront properties on Wharf Road. After check-in you have time for a stroll along the beach or the street lined with picturesque old cottages, or just unwind and relax before our restaurant dinner. Well after dark, the Fairy Penguins are heading to their burrows. For those who have the energy, take an easy 15-minute walk to Godfrey’s Beach penguin viewing platform and wait for the world’s smallest penguins to come home for the night.  (Day 5 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Stanley)

Sheffield, Launceston, Tamar Valley, Seahorse World, Cataract Gorge, Bicheno and Freycinet National Park

Today we leave the Northwest part of Tasmania and make our way to Launceston. Our first stop takes us to Sheffield. Once a centre for industry, the town has reinvented itself as an art community. Be inspired by the many murals in town telling us stories of the past. For lunch we travel to the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm. Treat yourself with waffles or pancakes, eggs benedict or a different savory meal option. We arrive in Launceston in the afternoon with plenty of time to take a walk to Cataract Gorge Reserve. Walk across the suspension bridge or stroll around the wonderful gardens. Finish the day with a delicious restaurant dinner at the Kingsbridge Bar. (Day 6 Conti Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Launceston)

After a well-earned sleep in or an early morning walk in Kings Park, we head out for a beautiful day trip to Tamar Valley, Beauty Point and Beaconsfield. Start with a behind the scenes tour at Seahorse World. Having won many tourism awards, it truly is a marvellous place to learn about the mini steeds that change colour and come in different sizes and shapes. After lunch we make our way to Beaconsfield. You see not only an extensive display of the very moving mine accident at the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, but you can find other very interesting exhibits and some beautiful heritage buildings.

Our next stop takes us to Brady’s Lookout a fabulous place with magnificent views of the Tamar Valley, distant mountains, and vineyards. Tamar Valley is the largest grape growing region in Tasmania with many boutique cellar doors, eateries, and distilleries. We cannot leave the valley without having tasted some locally made drinks. Made from pure Tasmanian water, premium grape base and unique botanicals, the small batch gin at Turner Stillhouse is a real treat. Choose between a structured gin tasting, a delicious cocktail or non-alcoholic mocktail. Back in Launceston enjoy a stroll along the riverfront precinct or to the town centre before dinner. (Day 7 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Launceston)

We continue our iconic Tasmania Tour by travelling to the East Coast. Our first stop is Campbell Town, home to the amazing tree carvings telling the history of the town. For lunch we visit the Freycinet Marine Farm, home to the finest local seafood. From here Freycinet National Park is only a short distance away. For the more active traveller take the 1.5-hour Wineglass Bay walk and climb the 900 steps up and down to a scenic lookout. We then browse the fabulous National Park’s Visitor Information Centre and discover Great Oyster Bay with wonderful coastal views. Mid-afternoon we drive to Bicheno, a small seaside town and our home for the next two nights. (Day 8 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Bicheno)

Wineglass Bay Cruise, Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasman National Park, Tasman Island Cruise, Richmond

Today we experience the spectacular coastline of Freycinet National Park on the award-winning Wineglass Bay Cuise from Coles Bay. From hidden sea caves, blowholes, granite cliffs to sparkling white sand beaches the catamaran cruise not only highlights stunning scenery but is full of wildlife encounters. A fabulous way of seeing Wineglass Bay and learning about the rich history of the region. Back in Bicheno there is plenty of time to explore the town. Take a walk to the Blowhole and Whalers Lookout for great photo opportunities, browse the local shops, or head to the Farm Shed for a wine tasting. We all join back for our restaurant dinner. (Day 9 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Bicheno)

After all this natural beauty we continue our Tasmania journey towards Port Arthur. Explore the Tessellated Pavement, the Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, and the Blow Hole all part of the Tasman National Park , situated high above the ocean with sheer cliff drops and monumental rock formations. A morning full of photo opportunities. For lunch we eat at the Doo-lishus Van. Try the local Fish & Chips or Scallop Pie.

With only two days to go on our iconic Tasmania Tour, you may be looking for some gifts to take home. We visit the Tasmania Chocolate Foundry in the heart of the Tasman Peninsula. All kinds of handmade chocolates and chocolate products can be purchased here. Best to save up your pocket money until today as it is hard to decide which chocolate flavour to buy. Let us treat you with a delicious lavender milkshake or iced coffee at Port Arthur Lavender. In addition, a fabulous place to stock up on divine smelling little gifts. Arrive in Port Arthur mid-afternoon and check-in to your accommodation for the next two nights. We are within walking distance of the Port Arthur Historic Site, and you are free to go for a sunset walk and photographs. Join back for dinner at our motel. (Day 10 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Port Arthur)

We had an amazing tour so far and we are about to embark on another exceptional experience – the Tasman Island Cruise. Explore waterfalls, rock formations and deep-sea caves on a great 3-hour adventure. The cruise travels beneath the highest vertical sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere at Cape Pillar and we will see thousands of sea birds of all kinds, most likely seals, and pods of dolphins. After this spectacular cruise we have lunch at the historic site before hearing about Port Arthur’s history as a convict settlement. Our visit includes a self-guided audio experience and a short harbour cruise. The historic buildings are open until 5pm and the grounds and gardens until dusk. We all join back for dinner and our final night. (Day 11 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Overnight in Port Arthur)

Day 12 has arrived, and we travel back to Hobart today. On route we stop in Richmond to see the Richmond Bridge, Australia’s oldest stone span bridge still in use. Only a short drive away we visit Coal River Farm, a family business that combines growing, making and sharing. Having won many awards for their handmade chocolates and cheeses Coal River Farm’s High Cheese Experience is a fantastic finish to our iconic Tasmania Tour. Enjoy a selection of artisan cheeses, fruit paste, nuts, crisp breads, and chocolates and soak up the real love for fresh produce and farm life.

We are now on the final leg to Hobart, and it is time to say goodbye. Let us drop you off at the airport by 12.30pm for a flight back home from 2pm onwards. And if staying another night in Hobart, our city centre drop off is around 1pm. (Day 12 Breakfast, High Cheese Experience)

I’ve watched many travel shows over the years featuring what they suggest are the best places to visit in Tasmania. But what these travel shows don’t prepare you for are the passionate locals you meet along the way. Luckily I found Australian Iconic Tours, a tour company that not only opened up and let you delve into many of the well-known areas being, The Nut at Stanley, Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, the Salamanca markets in Hobart and Port Arthur historic village.  Australian Iconic Tours also exhibited many places you may not have heard so much about like the Avenue of remembrance tree carvings in Legerwood, The Tin Dragon interpretation centre at Derby or Ashgrove cheese farm where you can eat wasabi cheese! While on this tour I had many memorable adventures for instance at Queenstown I hopped on board the West coast wilderness railway steam train, or when I settled back in the Captain’s deck on the Gordon River cruise at Strahan, and then near Port Arthur the tour uncovered hidden treasures on the Tasman Island wilderness cruise.

I would like to thank Australian Iconic Tours for organizing a breath taking journey through Tasmania. I not only became friends with people on the bus who had travelled from all over the world and Australia, I also met many wonderful characters across Tasmania. I can’t recommend this tour enough, don’t just put Tassie on you bucket list make it the first thing you do on the list.

Testimonials.

This was a great tour and made exceptional by our guide/driver Morgan who has a vast knowledge of Tasmania & it's history & was engaged and caring with our group. I would highly recommend Fun Tassie Tours to anyone. We met 2 other Fun Tassie coaches & their guide/drivers who were friendly, particularly 'Santa Claus' I think his name is Dean. Thanks Morgan for an unforgettable tour & sharing Tasmania's history as I am a lover of history.

Well where do you start, this tour is the best thing we could have done to see as much as possible in a short time frame. Everything was very well organised, meals, accommodation, walks, pit stops and free time in each location. Big thank you to Dean and the occasional meet ups with Morgan. Both full of knowledge off Tasmania, history, fauna and to present day. We learnt so much. Totally enjoyed every moment off this tour. Big 👍 for Dean who made this tour so memorable and special. Thank you

Let’s slow the pace down just a little as we explore the landscape north of Launceston around the beautiful Tamar River. Beginning with a morning tour of the famous Beaconsfield Gold Mine & Heritage Centre. Embark on an historical journey as you learn about the significance of this site in Tasmanian history and the dramatic collapse of the mine in 2006 which led to one of the most publicised rescue missions in Australian history.

Lunch will be on the banks of the Tamar River at the ever-delightful Beauty Point where after we will take a short stroll to explore the wonders of either the acclaimed Seahorse World or Platypus House.

Our afternoon activities include a scenic drive up to George Town & Low Head, home of some amazing tree carvings by renowned artist Eddie Freeman with tea & coffee at the Low Head Historic Lighthouse site. A second restful evening in the comfort of our Launceston CBD Best Western Hotel will end our days touring.

A short drive through downtown Launceston before enjoying a morning stroll at the lovely Cataract Gorge, a fantastic urban wilderness only minutes from the CBD. Heading west out of Tasmania’s biggest northern city we visit the heritage listed R. Stephens honey factory in Mole Creek – Tassie’s largest & oldest honey producer. After a delicious lunch we make our way on to Strahan via the meandering forest highways of the west coast. Your lungs will thank you as you inhale possibly the cleanest air on Earth. Arrive at Tasmania’s most westerly town for some afternoon relaxation and accommodation in Strahan.

Accommodation: Strahan Village or similar

Spend the morning enjoying one of the most scenic and unique tourist attractions in Australia – the Gordon River Cruise. Aboard the famous ‘Harbour Master’ in upper deck Gold Class luxury, your 6-hour cruise will include stunning views of Hells Gates and Macquarie Harbour, Sarah Island, the salmon farms and of course the jewel in the crown – the Gordon River World Heritage area itself. The cruise will also include a freshly prepared buffet lunch meal onboard the vessel.

Our afternoon plan will see us visit the Morrison Sawmill for a close-up look at Tasmania’s most famous timber – Huon Pine. Followed by some further exploring in Strahan village before heading to Queenstown for the evening’s accommodation. Tonight, includes evening meal in Queenstown.

Accommodation: Goldrush Queenstown or similar

Don’t bother checking out of your hotel as we will enjoy a lovely day of scenery before relaxing back in the same accommodations for a second night. Today we journey on the West Coast Wilderness Railway – a journey back in time on Tasmania’s west coast aboard the fully restored original steam train.

Departing from Queenstown we travel premium ‘Wilderness ‘class and will be welcomed onboard with complimentary sparkling wine and canapés. The half-day journey heads deep into the heart of the west coast on the steep sections of the track where the famous ‘rack n pinion’ line is found. Sit back in comfort as we cross more than a dozen bridges while listening to your guide bring stories of the railway and its resilient people to life. Enjoy the beautiful sights of the King River waterway, this is truly one of Tasmania’s premier experiences. This afternoon we offer an optional tour to Lake Margaret and the Lake Margaret Power Station. This privately guided tour offers a close-up look at the turbines & infrastructure that has been in continuous operation since 1918.

For those looking for further afternoon activities perhaps a short trek to Spion Kopf lookout above Queenstown or possibly an evening drink & movie at the classic old Empire Hotel & Paragon Theatre?

Take in the wondrous views from the Iron Blow lookout above Queenstown. The cantilevered platform allows panoramic viewing over the colourful surroundings. Lake Burbury boat ramp is another scenic opportunity to photograph the surrounding mountains before we head into the World Heritage area for a morning stroll through the thick forest to the imperial Nelson Falls – beautiful any time of year.

A little further along we stroll the bank of the infamous Franklin River. The waterway was at the centre of huge controversy and a major conservation effort in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Take time to wander the 35minute loop which showcases some of the prettiest scenery and plant species in Tasmania. After lunch at the famous Lake St Clair Lodge we stroll down to the jetty to take in Australia’s deepest natural, the freshwater lake at nearly 200m deep and surrounded by numerous stunning mountain peaks.

This is legitimately one of the most incredible privately owned art galleries in Australia.

Our afternoon travels will see us arrive at the old Hydro township of Tarraleah for our evenings lodgings. Now converted to a beautiful tourism venue Tarraleah Estate is one of the most unique locations we overnight at on tour. Learn about the monstrous hydroelectricity project and how it came to life back in the 1950’s. Wander the grounds to see abundant wildlife in the late afternoon and the resident Highland cattle that roam the property. In the evening dine in the very comfortable and warm Highlander restaurant.

Accommodation: Tarraleah Estate or similar

First up this morning is a stop at the beautiful Tarraleah lookout gazing over the hydropower station down below. We then continue via a magical drive into the Derwent Valley with its meandering, rolling hills. A morning stop at Lawrenny Distillery is in order, a stunning 1800’s built house & estate on the banks of the Derwent River. For those inclined, there is optional Whiskey & Gin tastings or tea, coffee, and snacks for those who would simply prefer to wander the immaculate gardens.

We then continue our journey to one of Tasmania’s most frequented national parks – Mt Field NP. This is the location of the state’s very iconic waterfall – Russell Falls. The large 3-tier falls is quite a sight to see especially in flood and is easily accessible for guests of all physical abilities. The 40-60min walk features some of the most beautiful trees on the island. For guests after a slightly more challenging walk, there will be an option to extend to see a 2nd beautiful waterfall higher up in the park. Giant Eucalyptus trees 300+ years old are as big as you will find in Tasmania. Tree ferns standing 6+ meters high dating hundred of years also line the pathway giving this walk a prehistoric and enchanted feel. Keep your eyes open for the many pademelons and other creatures that are very regularly seen along the pathway.

Another scenic drive back through the Derwent Valley is next past cherry farms, rolling pasture, hops fields, and many scenic vistas. We are lunching at a fantastic winery in the Derwent Valley with their great new restaurant – The Shed. No hurry here as we enjoy a long lunch, an accompanying glass of wine will be included in your package. Simply relax and enjoy the bounty of delicious foods that will be delivered your way. Additional wine tastings onsite are also an option for those inclined. This evening we return to Hobart city for 2 more nights stay at the very stylish, 4-star Movenpick Hotel.

This evening we return to Hobart city for 2 more nights’ stay at the very stylish, 4-star Movenpick Hotel.

Today we journey down the beautiful Huon Valley for a wilderness experience at the acclaimed Tahune Airwalk. After being ravaged by fire in 2019 this attraction has been re-developed and is now back to its beautiful best, showcasing the pristine rivers & tranquil native forests which include some specimens of Tasmania’s most famous tree – Huon Pine. The Tahune Airwalk itself is an elevated walkway 30 meters above the forest floor, with the final cantilever section sitting at a height of 50 meters above the Huon River. It boasts spectacular views to the confluence of the Huon & Picton Rivers and beyond to the peaks of the World Heritage Area in Tasmania’s south-west. A further walk takes us deeper into the forest and offers a unique experience crossing both the Huon & Picton Rivers on swinging bridges nearly 100m meters long. Feel the rush of the water beneath your feet and take in the views & crisp air coming from up stream. Stop at the Geeveston Timber Museum to learn the story of the early settlers harvesting timber from this area. There are many great old artefact and items of equipment on display.

Finally on our return journey to Hobart we visit the famous Willie Smith’s Apple Shed with the opportunity for an afternoon snack or refreshment – we recommend trying the apple cider made from apples grown in the surrounding orchards. Enjoy another relaxing evening at the Movenpick Hotel. Being Friday there are plenty of opportunities for night-time entertainment and many great Hobart city restaurants & venues close by.

The world-famous Salamanca markets are held every Saturday and we wouldn’t want to miss them. After a full buffet breakfast explore the market at your own leisure and sample some of the abundance of street foods. This officially concludes our most extensive and premium tour of the island. Some of the interesting sites that were visited. Port Arthur, Gordon River and Sarah Island,Russell Falls. Geoff

Attended the group tour with Robert as our guide. I had been to Hobart several times and wanted to see more of Tasmania without having to do all of the homework and planning. This was a wonderful trip that touched on areas like Cradle Mountain, Launceston, and small mining towns on the west coast. The planning and schedule was seamlessly run and chosen accommodation was very comfortable. The real value for me on the tour was being able to enjoy my surroundings without having my head stuck in a map and it was also fun to travel with others as I am normally a solo traveller. Also, it was quite obvious how much enthusiasm and knowledge Robert had for the different areas. His introduction to the various places we visited always put us in very good stead with the owners and operators of the different establishments. Would thoroughly recommend this tour for anyone who likes to see a lot but wants a break from planning it all themselves. I’ve had plenty of experience planning itineraries for myself and this was a much more enjoyable and less stressful way to enjoy my holiday 🙂 Laura

tasmania tours for seniors

Day 1 Welcome to Hobart

Tour Melbourne Image

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart may be small in size, but it’s big in attractions, as you’ll discover this afternoon. Put your destination into perspective from the summit of Mt. Nelson, offering endless vistas over Australia’s southernmost city. View the charming Georgian cottages of Battery Point and convict built warehouses along Salamanca Place, the backdrop of epic Saturday markets. Gaze over boats at Constitution Dock - this is where yachts finish when competing in the annual Sydney to Hobart race, and take a stroll in the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia with its amazing collection of plants from around the world. Tonight, join your Travel Director for a Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 Hobart - Strahan

Western Tasmania is like nature amplified, a place where the wilderness rules and people are few and far between. Visiting Mount Field National Park is a humbling experience, not only for the fact it’s part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, but also because it’s home to some of the tallest eucalypts and flowering plants on Earth. Wander amid these giants to reach Russell Falls – take a deep breath; you’re officially on holiday. Records continue to be broken at Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater Lake in Australia, before you arrive in Strahan, gateway to World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Day 3 Strahan

The inky waters of the Gordon River and Macquarie Harbour – given their colour by amber button-grass tannins – are as eery as they are beautiful, the mirror-like surface only broken by your Gordon River chariot as you cruise through Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour before returning to Sarah Island. It’s hard to reconcile the beauty of this part of the state with its grim history as a penal colony; a place where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building. Disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these 500-year-old majestic trees. Safely back on dry land, it's soon time to discover 'The Ship That Never Was', the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! You'll see it performed live by a group of theatre professionals.

Day 4 Strahan - Cradle Mountain - Burnie

Today your journey reaches new heights – quite literally with a visit to the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you explore Dove Lake on your Cradle Mountain tour, the wild alpine moorlands here a natural magnet for lovers of the wilderness. The spectacular and pristine wilderness of Cradle Mountain is home to the mysterious and secretive Tasmanian Devil. You’ll love the next adventure today, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. A Day Keeper at Devils @ Cradle will lead you through the sanctuary and provide you with a thorough insight into its operation. When joining this tour you will be directly supporting these animals and threatened species conservation. Leave the Central Highlands after an uplifting day and head towards the scenic north-west coast for your overnight stay.

Day 5 Burnie - Launceston

Table Cape is by far Wynyard's most remarkable natural wonder, at 180 metres high, 'The Cape' - as locals refer to it - offers spectacular views of Tasmania's coastline. As you drive to the top of the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano you'll reach Table Cape lookout where, on a clear day, you can see mountain ranges over 175 kilometres away. If there’s a town with a cuter name than Penguin, we’re yet to find it. Locals embrace its appeal – there are penguin sculptures at every turn, including one measuring over 3 metres tall. Your journey along the northwest coast also passes through Ulverstone and Sheffield, The Town of Murals, boasting over 100 large paintings depicting the area’s rich history and local characters. All this exploring builds an appetite. Refuel at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, where happy cows contribute to award-winning cheeses – everything from cheddar and red Leicester to creamy Tasmanian blue. For lovers of sweeter delights, why not treat yourself to a delicious locally made ice cream?

Day 6 Launceston

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be surrounded by nature. Launceston is one. Blink and you’re at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the optional scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. We wouldn’t blame you for lingering here, or perhaps taking a cruise along the river. The choice is yours.

Day 7 Launceston - Bicheno

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

Day 8 Bicheno - Hobart

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles Bay. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why the peninsula stars on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time. Your last stop for the day is to the shores of the Derwent River where local palawa will welcome you to country and show off some local bush tucker.

Day 9 Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, Blowhole… the attractions at and around Port Arthur nod to the region’s notoriously grim history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

Day 10 Farewell from Hobart

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve done it in 10 days. What a wild ride.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Safely back on dry land, it's soon time to discover 'The Ship That Never Was', the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! You'll see it performed live by a group of theatre professionals. Hotel: Strahan Village. B L D

4 Strahan - Cradle Mountain - Burnie

Hotel: Beachfront Voyager Motor Inn. B L D

5 Burnie - Launceston

Hotel: Best Western Plus Launceston. B

6 Launceston

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be surrounded by nature. Launceston is one. Blink and you’re at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the optional scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. We wouldn’t blame you for lingering here, or perhaps taking a cruise along the river. The choice is yours. Hotel: Best Western Plus Launceston. B

7 Launceston - Bicheno

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water. Hotel: Beachfront at Bicheno. B D

8 Bicheno - Hobart

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles Bay. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why the peninsula stars on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time. Your last stop for the day is to the shores of the Derwent River where local palawa will welcome you to country and show off some local bush tucker. Hotel: Best Western Hobart. B

9 Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, Blowhole… the attractions at and around Port Arthur nod to the region’s notoriously grim history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell. Hotel: Best Western Hobart. B FD

Rocketing to the Top: Kate Anderson Launched Her Career by Aiming High

She is among nrel’s 2024 distinguished researchers.

As a young girl growing up in Connecticut, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Strategy Lead Kate Anderson dreamed of becoming an astronaut.

“I went into the Air Force ROTC in college [at MIT while studying aerospace engineering] and envisioned becoming an astronaut someday,” she said.

There were not any space travelers in her immediate family. However, an uncle who worked as an airline pilot connected Anderson with astronaut Eileen Collins. “I got to go down to tour NASA with her, and I went to Space Camp in Alabama,” Anderson said. Liftoff seemed possible.

And, indeed in college, as part of her aerospace engineering training, she was a passenger on a large training plane known as the “Vomit Comet,” which made a rapid nosedive to simulate a loss of gravity. The plunge lasted only 35 seconds—but that was plenty. “It was tough. Hard to keep your lunch down when you’re diving toward the earth,” she explained.

However, the most common route to becoming an astronaut was to be a pilot, and although she played sports in college, Anderson did not qualify for pilot training because her eyesight was bad. Disappointed, she opted for satellite launching and was assigned as a captain to Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, home to a space and missile program.

Once there, she met her future husband, Mark, a mechanical engineer also in the Air Force. In a way, she was able—by proxy—to fulfill part of her early dream about space travel. She also gained a lot of experience as a 21-year-old.

“They handed me a satellite launch program,” she said, a position that included overseeing contractors and traveling to launch sites around the country. “It was a pretty cool assignment.”

Anderson was commissioned as a 2 nd  lieutenant in the Air Force upon graduation in 2000 from MIT. The ceremony took place at the USS Constitution in Boston, Massachusetts.  Photo by Kate Anderson, NREL

Anderson’s program used refurbished missiles that were being replaced because they were outmoded. She helped provide launch platforms for university research experiments. “It was a cheap ride into space for them,” she said, while also giving a useful purpose to the rockets.

Once she had completed her four-year stint, she and Mark took a year from 2004 to 2005 to travel around the world—often to remote areas for rock climbing. Her husband, who is passionate about climbing, taught Anderson the sport. “I think it was because he wanted a reliable belayer,” she laughed.

The Pull to Renewable Living and NREL

Although Anderson had not thought much about renewable energy as a younger woman, the idea of pursuing a sustainable lifestyle sprouted while she was stationed in Albuquerque with the Air Force.

Anderson admired the tradition of green building in New Mexico, a state that features an array of structures such as straw-bale homes, adobe dwellings, and so-called Earthships. After taking a weekend class on Earthship construction—a building method of reusing materials such as old tires to make more sustainable housing—she was hooked.

“That led me to looking for a master’s program,” she said. Failing to find a suitable one in green building, she settled for graduate work in renewable energy systems. “That helped me transition out of space and into sustainability.”

After a few more years in New Mexico as civilians, Anderson said, “Mark ran out of rocks to climb—so we were either going to go to Utah or Colorado. Both are big climbing destinations.”

In 2008, Anderson landed at NREL, working in the deployment area, which was part of the analysis team. She began under Nancy Carlisle in the integrated application office. It was a perfect fit. Carlisle had built her own net-zero house, so “we connected over sustainable building,” Anderson said.

For her part, Carlisle is proud of mentoring Anderson.

“Kate’s work is unique because she is able to lead project teams to develop specific engineering solutions to address real-world problems involving the integration of renewable energy on the grid,” Carlisle said. “She has a unique ability to sort through complex issues and get to the heart of the problem and clearly document a path forward.”

One of her early NREL projects was collaborating with the government of New York City to increase the Big Apple’s use of solar energy and resilience techniques. Another was joining Walker in renewable energy optimization analysis for the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., which was trying to get to net-zero energy use. The team looked at all forms of renewables, including solar power, wind energy, and biomass to meet this goal.

To keep track of the process, Walker created a renewable energy optimization spreadsheet, a tool that evolved into Renewable Energy Optimization (REopt). Anderson, in on the ground floor, later served as lead of the REopt team for more than a decade. She remained in that area of renewable energy adoption until a few years ago. Anderson also was a senior engineer and manager of the NREL Modeling and Analysis Group for 13 years.

More recently, she took on the role of inaugural Energy Systems Integration chief of staff, energy justice lead, and principal investigator for LA100 Equity Strategies. That study developed new research approaches for integrating equity in the energy transition allowing Los Angeles to depend on 100% clean energy.

Her contributions are one reason she was selected in the 2024 cohort of NREL’s distinguished researchers. “Kate is most deserving of this honor,” Dave Mooney said. “Her leadership in developing tools that have become instrumental to accelerating the energy transition exemplifies what it means to be an NRELian.”

A Strategist in Many Roles

Her early aspirations may have helped set a lofty perspective.

As NREL’s strategy lead, she is aligning and integrating research across the laboratory’s top 12 goals to achieve NREL’s critical objectives.

“My role as strategy lead is to help figure out how we achieve our grand vision of a clean energy future for the world,” she said. “I find it super inspiring.”

The equity piece is crucial to those goals, she said. “When you say a clean energy future for the world—with the ‘world,’ you are talking about everybody,” Anderson said. “Today, most of our renewable technologies reach wealthier people and communities who can afford them.” First adopters, she noted, are important, but equally necessary will be bringing the benefits to everyone.

Looking ahead, Anderson aspires to ensuring that the laboratory commits to its ambitious vision. As a parent of a 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son, she and her husband know that the stakes are real.

Two adults and two children stand on a mountaintop on a sunny day.

Anderson has stayed committed to NREL’s mission and exploring possibilities. Along the way, she earned a Ph.D. in advanced energy systems from Colorado School of Mines.

When asked to name what the most important thing that NREL needs to do, Anderson paused. Eventually, she said, “the number one thing NREL can do to achieve our vision is investing in our people.”

Who better than Anderson to help launch that experiment?

Extreme Wildfires Have Doubled in 2 Decades, Study Finds

In a changing climate, extreme wildfire events are becoming far more common and more intense, according to a new analysis.

  • Share full article

People throwing dirt on brush and flames.

By Austyn Gaffney

The hottest year on record, 2023, was also the most extreme for wildfires, according to new research.

Both the frequency and intensity of extreme wildfires have more than doubled in the last two decades, the study found. And when the ecological, social and economic consequences of wildfires were accounted for, six of the last seven years were the most “energetically intense.”

“That we’ve detected such a big increase over such a short period of time makes the findings even more shocking,” said Calum Cunningham, a postdoctoral researcher in pyrogeography at the University of Tasmania and lead author of the study published Monday in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution . “We’re seeing the manifestations of a warming and drying climate before our very eyes in these extreme fires.”

Last week wildfires in New Mexico killed two people and burned more than 24,000 acres; in Southern California , more than 14,000 acres burned near Los Angeles; and in Turkey , at least 12 people died and many more were injured by fires that started on Thursday from burning crop residue, according to Turkish health authorities and ministers.

Even though wildfires can be deadly and cost the United States up to $893 billion annually , which includes the costs of rebuilding and the economic effects of pollution and injuries, most fires are “relatively benign and in most cases ecologically beneficial,” Dr. Cunningham said.

The new study looked at the total power emitted by clusters of fire events, defined as fires burning at the same time in proximity, or in the same spot, at multiple times in a single day. The researchers analyzed 21 years of data collected by two NASA satellites between January 2003 and November 2023 to quantify how fire activity has changed over time.

They identified 2,913 extreme events out of more than 30 million fires across the world. Such extreme fire events were also defined by the vast amount of smoke they emitted, their high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, which can further accelerate global warming, and the fire’s ecological, social, and economic effects.

“This has been the holy grail for me,” said David Bowman, senior author of the study and professor of pyrogeography and fire science at the University of Tasmania. While he observed fires growing stronger, especially in Australia after the 2019 bush fires killed 33 people and almost three billion vertebrates, he said he needed the data from the study to show a trend and convey something enormous is happening.

“When you have these signals that are so frightening, it’s also really motivating,” Dr. Bowman said. “There’s an imperative to do something about this.”

The global increase in the frequency and intensity of fires was almost exclusively caused by changes in two regions. In the temperate conifer forests of the western United States and Canada, extreme fire events increased by more than 11-fold, from six in 2003 to 67 in 2023. The boreal forests of North America and Russia’s northern latitudes saw a 7.3-fold increase in energetically extreme fires.

The scientists plan to examine why the fires in these biomes were so extreme, but Dr. Cunningham said their findings were consistent with the effects of climate change, which make conditions hotter and drier in these forests and more conducive to extreme events.

This scale of wildfire threatens not only nearby communities but also people living far away because dense smoke can significantly affect air quality and can travel great distances.

“The largest smoke events come from the most intense fire events,” said Jeffrey Pierce, a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University. “If you don’t have the ability to clean air in your home or seek places that have air purification systems,” wildfire smoke can have strong health effects.

Jennifer R. Marlon, a research scientist and lecturer at the Yale School of the Environment and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, said the study showed that humans are changing patterns of forest and grassland burning far beyond what we’ve ever done in the past.

“Larger and more severe wildfires are one of the most obvious manifestations of a planet that is heating up,” Dr. Marlon said in an email. “If we can help people better understand that connection, we may be able to build support for working more quickly to reduce the root causes of the problem — burning fossil fuels.”

An earlier version of this article stated incorrectly the death toll from bush fires in Australia in 2019. The fires that year killed 33 people, not 173.
