Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel Launch 2023 Tour: Set List and Video

Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel kicked off their run of co-headlining dates with a performance at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles last night.

Nicks opened the show with a 16-song set that included Fleetwood Mac classics “Dreams,” “Sara” and “Rhiannon” along with Buffalo Springfield ’s “For What It’s Worth” and Tom Petty ’s “Free Fallin’.” She dedicated her last song, “Landslide,” to late bandmate Christine McVie – it was the first time she’d performed since McVie died in November. As she sang, the stage screens showed pictures of the women together over the years. Afterwards, struggling with her emotions, Nicks told the crowd, “There's really not much to say. We just will pretend that she’s still here. That’s how I’m trying to deal with it. Thank you for listening.”

Joel, who’d joined Nicks for a rendition of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” before delivering his own 21-song set that included a nod towards his classical music interest with “Nessun Dorma.” Nicks returned to guest on “And So It Goes.”

Full set lists for both performers and video clips from the show can be found below.

Despite both coming to prominence at similar times, Joel and Nicks didn't cross paths until later in life. "We met at a Fleetwood Mac gig in San Francisco probably 10 years ago," Joel revealed during a recent conversation with the Los Angeles Times . "I just got to meet her backstage, but we’ve never worked together, even though we both kind of hit at the same time. So this’ll be a completely new thing for me."

In that interview, Joel hinted he'd "probably do one of her songs and she’ll probably do one of mine." Probed as to whether he'd decided which Nicks song to cover, the Piano Man responded: "That’s up to her."

The L.A. concert was the first of nine dates where the rock legends will share the stage. In addition to the shows alongside Joel, Nicks will be doing a run of solo performances , beginning March 15 in Seattle. Meanwhile, the Piano Man will continue his ongoing monthly gigs at Madison Square Garden.

Billy Joel setlist 2023: The songs he sang in Phoenix concert on tour with Stevie Nicks

B illy Joel returned to downtown Phoenix on Friday, Dec. 8, for a hit-filled concert at Chase Field, where he played to more than 50,000 fans four years ago . And this time, he had company.

Joel and Stevie Nicks are on a co-headlining tour, aptly titled Two Icons – One Night.

This was the first time Joel and Nicks have shared a stage in Phoenix, and Joel made the most of it, making an early appearance during Nicks' set to sing Tom Petty's part on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," the classic hit single that launched Nicks' solo career  at a time when she was known primarily for  her work with Fleetwood Mac .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Joel kicked off his own portion of the show with "My Life," offsetting hits as essential as and “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)”and “Only the Good Die Young” with deeper cuts and album tracks that might as well be hits.

How were “New York State of Mind” and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” not released as singles?

He ended his set with the Dylanesque classic that started it all, “Piano Man,” returning for an encore that felt like a victory lap, playing hit after hit after hit before sending the fans on their way with one more massive singalong, “You May Be Right.”

Stevie Nicks was back in Phoenix — where it literally all began — on a co-headlining tour with Billy Joel that brought the two rock icons to Chase Field, where she took the stage on Friday night, Dec. 8, and set the tone for her performance with “Outside the Rain,” a haunting highlight of the “Bella Donna” album.

It was one of four songs Nicks performed from the quadruple-platinum triumph that launched her recording career outside of Fleetwood Mac, welcoming Joel to the stage to stand in for Tom Petty on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and bringing the set to a crowd-pleasing close with “Edge of Seventeen.”

She also sprinkled in a number of the most beloved songs she brought to Fleetwood Mac, from “Gypsy,” “Dreams” and “Gold Dust Woman” to the encore-closing double shot of “Rhiannon” and “Landslide,” the latter of which was accompanied by photographs of Nicks and the late Christine McVie.

Other highlights ranged from “Stand Back” and “If Anyone Falls” from 1983's “The Wild Heart” to her recent take on the Buffalo Springfield hit, “For What It’s Worth,” and another nod to her friendship with Petty on “Free Fallin’.”

Review: Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks keep a fantasy alive at SoFi Stadium

Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Stevie Nicks slumped against a microphone stand, steadying herself with both sparkly gloved hands, and bowed her head for 10 or 12 seconds as the final chords of “Landslide” rang out through Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium on Friday night.

Concluding her set on the opening date of a joint mini-tour with Billy Joel, the singer and gothic-hippie style icon had just performed her signature acoustic ballad in front of an enormous video screen showing photos of her with Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie , who died in November. We saw Stevie and Christine harmonizing; we saw them holding hands; we saw them whispering into each other’s ear, sharing some joke made only funnier by its secrecy. Now, Nicks — onstage for the first time since McVie’s death — lifted her head, her eyes seeming to glisten under the stadium lights.

“There’s really not much to say,” she told the tens of thousands in the crowd. “We just pretend that she’s just still here — that’s how I’m trying to deal with it.”

Billy Joel on his L.A. years: I felt like ‘an exiled writer living in Paris’

Joel, who performs with Stevie Nicks on Friday at SoFi Stadium, on the inspiration for ‘Piano Man,’ farewell tours and his ‘70s hit he now calls ‘dreary.’

March 8, 2023

Finding new emotional purpose in well-worn material — in lines like those in “Landslide” about getting older after having built your life around someone — is probably the most you can ask of a veteran rock star on the road for the umpteenth time. It’s a way to keep the classic music alive, even (or especially) when it’s painful; it shows there’s use left in the old songs, not just for the audience but for the artist as well.

There are less noble reasons to tour, of course, some of which were in evidence Friday. Maybe you want to show off a voice, as Nicks did, that still sounds great at age 74 — low and smoky, with an imperiousness that can suddenly melt away to reveal pure need. Maybe you want to crack some dad jokes, as 73-year-old Joel did, about his lack of dance skills, just before his band struck up the Rolling Stones’ “ Start Me Up ” and he flailed around for a minute like an adult-aerobics Mick Jagger .

And maybe you want to make some money, as both stars certainly will on a leisurely run scheduled to touch down once a month or so through November. (Primo floor seats for the duo’s next concert, in Arlington, Texas, are available for $2,250 a pop.)

But for those watching, a moment like Nicks’ moving “Landslide” — its reminder that honesty and finesse can happen in the same place at the same time — is the reason to show up for an operation like this.

Billy Joel performs.

Do Joel and Nicks make for an odd combination? He’s Mr. New York, she an avatar of West Coast cool ; his songs look back to the tidy structures of the Brill Building, hers the haunted romance of Welsh folklore. Yet each began racking up radio hits around the same time, in the mid-1970s: Two years after Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” was named album of the year at the Grammy Awards, Joel won the same prize with “52nd Street.”

More to the point, both singers outlasted the FM era to endure well into the MTV age — a testament to radio’s career-building power, sure, but also to their understanding the emergent value of a visual brand. At SoFi, Joel still scrunched up his bulldog’s face while Nicks kept twirling in her glittering shawl.

Fleetwood Mac pose for a portrait in circa 1977.

Christine McVie’s greatness proved that shy girl power had a place in rock ‘n’ roll

McVie, who died on Wednesday, was the earthbound counterpoint to bandmate Stevie Nicks’ crystal visions, and the group’s most lovely and merciful presence.

Dec. 1, 2022

Besides, how much sense does a joint bill of boomers even need to make? (Recall that Nicks toured a decade ago with Rod Stewart , of all people.) As Joel told The Times in an interview last week, McVie was just one casualty of the war of attrition that time is waging against his generation. “Dropping Like Flies” was his joking title for the next possible tour. That would really only sharpen the catch-’em-while-you-can pitch embedded in “Two Icons — One Night,” as the current show is called.

Here they joined forces for a pair of unlikely duets: her “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” in which Joel sang the part made famous by the late Tom Petty ; and his “And So It Goes,” for which they stationed themselves at opposite ends of Joel’s grand piano. Neither performance convinced you that they had finally found their musical soulmates; both performances made you glad nonetheless to see two artists reaching toward each other.

Stevie Nicks stands holding a microphone while dressed in black.

Other than “Landslide,” highlights of Nicks’ set included a lustrous “Sara,” which online record-keepers say she hadn’t performed solo for a decade and a half, and a juicy take on “If Anyone Falls” that led you to think about how much modern pop music Nicks was groundworking between the years of 1975 and 1983. (No “The Wild Heart,” no Miley Cyrus; no “Bella Donna,” no Lana Del Rey .)

The 5 Stevie-est Stevie Nicks moments

Joel did that too with “Just the Way You Are,” which sounds now like a blueprint for guys like the Weeknd and Bon Iver and their ideas about the obsessions concealed by shimmering surfaces. Mostly, though, he seemed less interested in casting new light on his music than in showcasing its durability: Before “An Innocent Man,” he said he was worried about hitting the song’s high notes, then nailed each one — wouldn’t you know it? — with precision to spare.

His hits were many and varied, from “My Life” and “Movin’ Out” and “Allentown” to “Only the Good Die Young” and “The River of Dreams” and the inevitable “Piano Man.” For his encore Joel rose from behind his piano and grabbed a mike on a stand to belt out “Uptown Girl” and “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” as his band cranked the guitars. The songs were arguing that things never change — another fantasy to believe in even when you know better.

Stevie Nicks setlist: Here are all the songs on her can't-miss US tour

stevie nicks billy joel tour setlist

NEW YORK — Stevie Nicks will always be the coolest person in any room.

On Sunday night, rock's high priestess made Madison Square Garden her church with an electrifying, funny and at times heartbreaking sold-out concert. Wearing a black, billowing dress — her mic stand sparkling with beads and ribbons — Nicks delivered some of her best-loved hits with regal grace and bewitching power, including "Bella Donna," "Stand Back" and "Edge of Seventeen."

In between each song, the singer candidly regaled stories to the audience with self-deprecating humor and wistful wisdom: recalling her "incredible crush on Tom Petty" that led to "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," and how "Fall From Grace" is the closest thing she's written to "a real serious argument." And although you'd never know it, she talked about feeling intense stage fright, returning to headline the iconic Garden for the first time since 2016.

"I've been here before, but it doesn't ever get old in the way of you saying, 'Oh, Madison Square Garden, no problem,'" Nicks said early in the evening. "It's such an amazing place that you’re a little scared. And I'm fearless – I'm never scared – but I'm scared right now. So anyways, let's just get this party started!"

The night's biggest tearjerkers were Nicks' emotional encore tributes to Petty and Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie , singing "Free Fallin'" and "Landslide" accompanied by pictures of the late musicians. She also had the crowd in stitches mid-show as she gleefully played with her Stevie Barbie doll, which she told USA TODAY about in a new interview .

"Thank you for indulging me and my little guilty pleasure," Nicks said onstage. "And now, moving on from Barbie Land and back to Stevie Land."

Nicks, 75, last released an album of all-original music with 2011's "In Your Dreams," while 2014's "24 Karat Gold" featured new versions of old demos. She is playing nearly two dozen shows across the U.S. through next March, some of which with Billy Joel .

The setlist so far for Nicks’ performance is packed with exciting cuts. It has her solo hits like “Edge Of Seventeen” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” during the latter of which Billy Joel joins her to sing the part of Tom Petty. It also contains several Fleetwood Mac songs, such as “Dreams,” “Gypsy,” and many more.

Late last year, her bandmate Christine McVie tragically passed and she penned a thoughtful letter to her and shared it to social media: “See you on the other side, My Love. Don’t forget about me,” she wrote.

Four hours was barely enough time for the Two Icons, One Night tour at on Friday night at Soldier Field. Commencing at 7:15 p.m. and wrapping at 11:25 p.m., the catalog-busting doubleheader from Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks delivered 37 songs in brilliant succession, but still left fans wanting more.

It’s greedy to even say. The two legends are an incredible 75 and 76 years old, respectively, and the fact they are still performing at this level is a gift. Nicks just returned to the stage after an illness that sidelined her gigs in Michigan and Pennsylvania over the past week and kept apologizing for being hoarse and “not her best” (she could’ve fooled us). And Joel kept using throat spray and had his own disclaimers for not being able to hit the high notes in “An Innocent Man” (no one seemed to mind).

Such limitations aside, both performers gave it their all amid a winding summer stadium trek that also marks their first time sharing a stage in our city. The pinnacle came as they joined together to duet on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” Nicks’ 1981 collaboration with the late Tom Petty.

Billy Joel is every inch the piano man during his 23-song set on Friday night at Solider Field, closing out an evening of incredible songs that kicked off with an opening set by Stevie Nicks.

Even while being able to hear “Gold Dust Woman” on the same night as “We Didn’t Start The Fire” was itself a total rock and roll fantasy, it still was a mere tease of the voluminous songbooks from two music icons who have been performing a collective 118 years.

“If it seems like I’m rushed tonight, I am,” Nicks shared as she opened the festivities, donning her iconic black velvet, witchy ensemble in the near 90-degree heat, and explaining she had to curtail her typically juicy storytelling between songs. She still managed a few gems, like recalling working with Petty, and the tale of hearing Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” on the radio years ago and desiring to cover it. Nicks did so on this night, using the track’s political overtones to pivot to an endorsement to vote, lamenting she didn’t do so until she was 70 years old.

The 14-song set was almost identical to her headlining date at United Center last June , with the addition of “Leather and Lace” as her gifted vocal coach Steve Real filled in for Don Henley’s parts. But something felt heavier on this night, in the wake of her recent interview with Mojo in which she declared there’s “no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way.”

Stevie Nicks delivers her 14-song, greatest-hits set at Soldier Field on Friday night.

There was a new immediacy to hearing “Rhiannon” and “Dreams” and of course “Landslide.” The latter was flanked by a slideshow of throwback images of Nicks and the late Christine McVie. As their baby faces took over the screens, the lyrical line “even children get older” took on more meaning and became a cornerstone of the entire night. It was hard not to reflect on time passed, how much has changed, and yet how much this music and coming-of-age songs still have a hold on us.

As Billy Joel reigned in the second half of the night, that sentiment carried over. It hit a fever pitch on “Piano Man,” as Joel let the audience take over the last verse. It soon morphed into a spirited a capella singalong, thousands of camera lights held high in the air, as the capacity crowd begged him to “sing us a song tonight.”

Nostalgia waved over the performer during moments like these in the 23-song set delivered from a bare-bones stage. After serenading the crowd with a snippet of “My Kind of Town,” he thanked everyone for “making me a lucky man … I had no idea I’d still be doing this at 75.”

He also recalled a time when he could do flips off the piano, admitting, “I’m a little too long in the tooth now.” And he tore through some of his most gilded works, sticking heavily to cuts from 1977’s “The Stranger,” 1978’s “52 nd Street” and 1980’s “Glass Houses.”

Other standouts included the opener “My Life,” in which Joel showed his never-wavering dexterity on the keys, as well as a barbershop rendition of “The Longest Time” featuring four of his multi-talented bandmates, and a rousing edition of “We Didn’t Start The Fire” with Joel on guitar.

Unexpected moments included a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up,” foreshadowing that band’s impending takeover of Soldier Field, and several of Joel’s eight-piece backing ensemble getting moments to shine. Among them was Gary, Indiana, native Crystal Taliefero aceing Ike and Tina Turner’s “River Deep Mountain High,” and Mike DelGuidice offering an unreal operatic turn with Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma.”

Friday night was an incredibly special moment to see Joel live — even if the venue was a big change from his home-away-from-home at Wrigley Field . The gig falls smack dab in his long-running residency at Madison Square Garden and just ahead of his 150 th and final show at the legendary New York venue on July 25.

“Good evening, Chicago. My kind of town!” exclaimed Billy Joel on stage Friday night at Soldier Field, setting up an appropriate cover of the Frank Sinatra staple. “This is our last gig playing with Stevie Nicks for now. It’s been a real pleasure working with her,” he said later, noting the duo’s second and final scheduled performance together of 2024. “Thank you, Stevie!”

Joel made his way to the stage early Friday, taking on the Tom Petty lead vocal alongside Nicks on the duo’s iconic 1981 single “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” early in her opening performance.

Set to wrap up his monthly Madison Square Garden residency on July 25, 2024 in New York City, Joel will head to the U.K. for a stop in Cardiff, Wales on August 9 ahead of a run of fall dates through America set to kick off September 13 in Cleveland, Ohio, with Nicks scheduled to launch a European tour of her own July 3 in Dublin, Ireland.

As one of the best-selling artists of all time, Joel has sold in excess of 150 million albums globally, with Nicks tacking on another 65 million of her own, including the diamond-certified, 21 times platinum Fleetwood Mac opus Rumours , still one of the ten best selling albums ever, rendering Friday night’s rare pairing a can’t miss concert event.

“Thank you so much. Welcome, everybody!” said Nicks, taking the stage Friday afternoon in the Windy City. “We’re so excited to be here - we love Chicago. We’ve been here a couple of days so let’s get this great Chicago party started!”

Following Pennsylvania and Michigan concerts that were recently postponed due to illness , Nicks made her return to the stage Friday backed by a terrific eight piece group, ripping straight into “Outside the Rain” at the top of her set.

While she referenced having vocal issues a few times on stage in Chicago, Nicks, 76, nevertheless remained in fine voice over the course of 90 minutes.

“When Christine passed, it was a very difficult time,” observed Nicks Friday night, referencing the 2022 death of Fleetwood Mac bandmate and friend Christine McVie. “My mother always said, ‘Stevie, when things get rough, you run to the stage.’ Well, I’ve been running to the stage for two years now.”

Photos of McVie ran on screen as Nicks wrapped with “Landslide.” “And I’m getting older too,” she sang during one of the evening’s most poignant moments.

Led by longtime guitarist Waddy Wachtel, Nicks and company put their spin upon Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” while revisiting Nicks’ most celebrated Fleetwood Mac, solo and duet moments.

“I’d like to say that it’s been an amazing journey that Billy has brought me on,” said Nicks following the Petty performance. “Feisty, New Yorker,” she joked, referencing Joel. “You’re a feisty New Yorker too,” she continued, nodding at Wachtel. “This one is about a gypsy - which is of course me,” she continued, revisiting Fleetwood Mac’s 1982 studio effort Mirage .

While the one-two punch of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” and “Landslide” brought the crowd to their feet Friday night during Nicks’ encore, it was her’ own “Stand Back” that stole the show midway through, with Wachtel shifting to a scorching slide guitar.

“Look at all the f–ing people here!” Joel exclaimed, following the group’s take on “My Life,” fly swatter in hand as he opened the set. “I used to climb on this thing and do flips off of it - but I’m getting a little long in the tooth for that,” he said with a smile, sitting down behind the piano as he set up “Vienna.” Thank you for coming!”

A trio of saxophones drove “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” as Joel, 75, charged left with his mic stand during the group’s take on the Rolling Stones “Start Me Up.”

As always, terrific harmonies sealed indelible moments as Joel and company took on a pair of vocal heavy covers in “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” (Solomon Linda) and “Barbara Ann” (The Regents/Beach Boys). Wrapping up the early medley, “The Longest Time” proved even more impressive, with five vocalists singing behind Joel throughout the sparsely arranged rendition of the track.

“Today is the first day of summer!” Joel observed excitedly, rolling out another deep cut in “Zanzibar” from 1978’s 52nd Street .

“The River of Dreams” celebrated Tina Turner via a snippet of “River Deep, Mountain High” which featured Crystal Taliefero on vocal, with Joel soon shifting to opera for Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” (as sung by powerhouse vocalist Mike DelGuidice).

Offering up cuts like “Sleeping with the Television On” and “Sometimes a Fantasy,” Joel dug deep in his catalog, saving the hits for last as he cruised toward finish.

“This next song, you probably know,” said Joel, understating the obvious as he picked up harmonica, letting the crowd of 60,000 plus do the heavy lifting on “Piano Man.” “It’s a pretty good crowd for a… Friday!” joked the singer, improvising a bit during the Friday night performance.

Saxophone drove “We Didn’t Start the Fire” to open the encore as images of the historical persons and events that define the song’s iconic video ran on screen behind the nine band members on stage.

Joel channeled his inner rock star, avoiding piano entirely for the first three encore numbers, with images of his snazzy red blazer from the “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” video drawing smiles from the immense crowd as it ran behind him on screen.

Returning to piano for “Big Shot,” Joel and company tried one last cover as the closing cut meandered into Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” during the show’s closing moments.

“I had no idea I’d still be doing this job at 75 years old,” observed Joel on stage in Chicago. “It’s the same job I had at 15 years old. So, I’m a very lucky man,” he continued. “And I thank you for making me such a lucky man.”

Things To Do

Music and concerts | review: billy joel and stevie nicks at soldier field was a night reliving the years with a couple of music icons.

Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks perform Tom Petty's "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" at Soldier Field on June 21, 2024, in Chicago. (John J. Kim/Chicago Tribune)

Primarily seated at a grand piano that rotated on a turntable, and surrounded by a versatile eight-piece band, an affable Joel entertained a football stadium’s worth of people while barely breaking a sweat amid a punishing heat wave. Holding court with recognizable oldies, laissez-faire attitude, goofball humor and his trademark flyswatter, he inhabited the titular role of his signature tune, “Piano Man.”

Sure, the stage was far grander, and the tip jar transformed into merch stands hawking $100 sweatshirts. Yet the gist of Joel’s 135-minute concert connected to the feeling of performances given in bars everywhere by pianists who always take the same requests and still manage to smile: comfort, reminiscence and sing-a-long melodies that slosh around in your head.

At Joel’s outdoor establishment, nostalgia, familiarity and professionalism ruled. The most recent song he sang dated back to President Clinton’s first term. The slickest visuals amounted to the backdrop screens depicting an iPad revealing finger-swiped images of historical figures cited in the listicle anthem “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Joel’s retro-minded approach proved wise. A production with the  extravagance embraced by modern pop stars would’ve looked silly.

Besides, who needs choreography teams or pyrotechnics when faithful readings of doo-wop classics get the crowd on its feet? Or when a short snippet of “Hey Joe” — the bluesy revenge tune popularized by Jimi Hendrix — generated pleas for Joel to continue to the next stanza? With cameras panning the audience for reactions and consistently displaying that most fans knew every word to every chorus of Joel’s songs, following the work-smarter-not-harder observations outlined in “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” seemed a foregone conclusion.

No artist has more successfully traded on their back catalog than Joel. Though his contemporaries keep cranking out LPs, he figured out long ago that traditional release-and-promotion cycles could be bypassed without consequence at the box office. Joel recently said, for him, writing amounts to self-torture and fostered unhealthy addictions. With apparent seriousness, he also suggested that hardly anyone makes albums nowadays, which might surprise those who pay attention to the contemporary music scene.

No matter. Save for three originals, including one (“Turn the Lights Back On”) issued earlier this year, Joel effectively shut off the creative spigot decades ago. Rather than toil in a studio, he spent a majority of the past 30 years filling seats on his own terms. The singer ranks in the top 15 highest-grossing touring artists of all time. Banners touting his streaks of sold-out shows hang from the rafters of multiple East Coast arenas. Next month, Joel will end his unprecedented run of 150 sold-out hometown shows at Madison Square Garden, culminating a residency of the singer playing the venue on a monthly basis for 10 years.

Nice work, if you can get it. Joel mentioned he’s been lucky to do the same job since he was 15. Now 75, his head bald and neatly trimmed facial hair snowy white, the New York City native showed a levity that tended to escape him in the past. Joel derided one of his albums (“Streetlife Serenade”), placed his rock-star moves beneath those of Mick Jagger (a slowed and abbreviated version of the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up”), paused and stared at his watch to elicit a pun (“The Longest Time”) and jested about the lack of special effects.

He also half-jokingly offered a disclaimer regarding his uncertainty about reaching upper-register notes. It contained plenty of truth. Joel’s midrange and low-end scope remain solid. His falsetto, too, admirably blended with group vocals. But attempts at hitting or holding lofty highs failed. A rough ride through “An Innocent Man” found him not only ceding choral elements to others, but stumbling amid verses.

Fortunately, the vocal snafus were limited. Joel activated black-tie crooner mode for an apropos stab at “My Kind of Town,” stood on an imaginary streetcorner for the cascading doo-wop of “Uptown Girl” and unveiled tonal elasticity for the moonlit ballad “New York State of Mind.” Eyebrows arched and eyes wide, he often looked as if he was ready to bite into a tall triple-decker club sandwich when he went all-in on mid-tempo material. Ironically, the most soulful Joel got occurred when multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Crystal Taliefero led a cover of “River Deep — Mountain High” in the middle of “The River of Dreams.”

Brassy horns provided additional assists and paired well with Joel’s stable piano lines. Steadiness, sentimental journeys to fictitious neighborhood joints and check-ins with common characters steered Joel’s direction. Aside from a cover of Puccini’s operatic aria “Nessun dorma” sung by band member Mike DelGuidice, there were no surprises or diversions, and scant edginess to interfere with the breezy moods. Even songs about lust (the drab “Sleeping with the Television On,” the prophetic “Sometimes a Fantasy,” the clever “Only the Good Die Young”) blushed with a high degree of innocence.

“I am not an innocent man,” Joel declared toward the end of the show. Fair enough. His music and persona, however, thrive on that illusion.

Joel boasts more hits than Nicks, yet the Fleetwood Mac legend possessed more depth, charisma and grit. Almost a year to the day since her memorable 2023 show at United Center, the 76-year-old faced several challenges she avoided then. The opening slot forced her to trim her set and curtail her amusing song introductions, though she injected some storytelling by talking at a rapid clip. The biggest issue concerned Nicks’ voice.

She twice apologized for hoarseness and leaned on backing vocalists for extra support. Despite the shortcomings, which extended to overly sharp nasal deliveries, Nicks demonstrated why she continues to enjoy a late-career surge in appreciation and influence. Feisty and forward, the twice-inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer kept it real by presenting her raspy, warts-and-all singing without artificial enhancements. Her body language did the rest.

Twirling, curtseying, bowing, air drumming, tracing human silhouettes, leaning into a ribbon-festooned microphone stand as the wind blew her various shawls, capes and wraps: Nicks embodied a magnetic combination of physical energy and mystic mystery. After a threatening version of the serpentining classic “Gold Dust Woman,” she confessed her animated movements represented the struggle to live out the song.

For “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” Nicks invited Joel to step into the role originally occupied by Tom Petty. The duet lacked requisite heat. Joel’s tendency to stare at what appeared to be a TelePrompter scrolling the lyrics snuffed out any potential chemistry. Nicks’ collaboration with her vocal coach, Steve Real, on “Leather and Lace” fared better.

In terms of rock stars overstepping their bounds, one could fault Nicks for imploring people to vote before soon divulging she neglected to cast a ballot for most of her life. Yet given the way she attacked the cautionary “Stand Back” and raised her arm in triumph at its close, you might want to think twice before going after an icon who is having another moment.

The 10 best artists to see at BST Hyde Park this summer, from Stevie Nicks and Gary Clark Jr. to AlienBlaze and Kylie

The annual British Summer Time festival returns to London's largest Royal Park from this weekend. Here are our recommended picks of the 2024 line-up

Stevie Nicks, Gary Clark Jr, AlienBlaze, Kylie

Given the insane amount of hype and endless sycophantic media coverage which precedes it, you might possibly be aware that the world's most self-regarding music festival starts today. It's not, however, the only music event in the UK this weekend, for the annual BST Hyde Park festival season kicks off tonight in London's largest Royal Park, with headline attractions including SZA, Kings Of Leon , Robbie Williams, Shania Twain , Stevie Nicks, Kylie Minogue and more, plus full supporting bills. Here's our guide to 10 of the best artists playing BST over the next three weekends, with not a single hippy or 'Free Hugs For Global Peace!' placard in sight.

Louder line break

It's entirely possible that you might not realise quite what a big deal Solána Imani Rowe is, but, if not, the fact that her most recent record, 2022's SOS, topped the US Billboard 200 chart for 10 weeks, and that the 34-year-old singer/songwriter is headlining BST (on June 29) and closing Glastonbury in the same weekend tells its own story. Features with Drake, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar and Doja Cat are an indication of the esteem in which the St. Louis-born R&B star is held among her peers, but with new album Lana on the horizon, this weekend will go a long way to affording SZA the full glare of the spotlight she deserves.

Stevie Nicks

A true legend, Stevie Nicks needs no introduction. Fleetwood Mac's vocalist has cut a singular presence in the music business for five decades, the timeless quality of her music meaning that artists from Miley Cyrus to Hole and Smashing Pumpkins have covered her songs. Nicks' most recent set-list, on tour with Billy Joel, included Stop Draggin' My Heart Around , Gold Dust Woman , Dreams , Rhiannon , Landslide and more, and her return to London to headline BST on July 12 (with Brandi Carlile and Anna Calvi on the supporting bill) promises to be a special night.

Black Grape

Billed, for possibly the first time ever, as Shaun Ryder 's Black Grape, presumably to bolster name recognition for those more familiar with the singer's appearances on I'm A Celebrity ... and Gogglebox than his fabulous work with The Happy Mondays, the Mancunian party-starters are an impressively left-field choice to support enduring English pop superstar Robbie Williams. The band's debut album, It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah , is a '90s indie rock classic, and this year's Orange Head record finds Ryder and his mate Kermit in equally irrepressible form. Quite what the hen parties will make of it all is anyone's guess.

Kings Of Leon

King Of Leon's visits to the UK haven't always made headlines for the right reasons , but the Followill 'boys' are apparently in a good place now, and having titled their current album Can We Please Have Fun this seems like an ideal opportunity for the Nashville quartet to serve up some Southern comfort (and the odd rebel yell) on a warm summer's night. Expect the singalong to Sex On Fire to drown out any rendition of Three Lions on Sunday evening, even if Gareth Southgate's team also belatedly rediscover their form.

For those who like their punk rock wrapped in the warm, comforting blanket of nostalgia, Green Day are revisiting their Dookie and American Idiot albums at Wembley Stadium this weekend.  But for those who prefer their punk with genuine bite, and street-level resonance, there's The Meffs, supporting Kings Of Leon on June 30, previewing songs from their forthcoming Frank Turner-produced What A Life album, set for release on NOFX mainman Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords on September 24. Turner describes the album as "a fucking beast" so it's high time you were introduced.

The last few years have not been easy for Soft Play (the artists formerly known as Slaves) for both personal and professional reasons, so  Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent will be looking to let off some serious steam at BST, supporting Robbie Williams. With the release of Heavy Jelly , the duo's first album in six years, just around the corner (July 19), Soft Play will be aiming to remind everyone exactly why they had a reputation as one of Britain's best live bands before unavoidable and unfortunate challenges derailed their momentum, starting now.

That AlienBlaze does not lack confidence was indicated from the moment she described her 2023 single Not Yours Never Was “as if Tchaikovsky wanted to write a rock or alt.pop song”. The first UK artist signed to Sumerian Records, also home to the likes of Poppy, Bad Omens and Kittie, as with fellow nu gen trailblazers Cassyette and Bambie Thug, the singer/guitarist (aka Alicia Moore) has the songwriting skills to transcend genres, and a desire to push rock music forward. Performing for open-minded K-Pop fans at Stray Kids' July 14 BST show should be a chance to broaden her fan-base even further.

Gary Clark Jr

Classic Rock has described Gary Clark Jr.'s current album JPEG RAW as " one of the best albums you'll hear this year " and " the best album of his career ", and bearing in mind that his last album, This Land , scored three Grammy Awards wins, that's high praise. A gifted multi-instrumentalist and one of the finest blues guitarists of his generation, Clark has collaborated with legends such as Stevie Wonder and George Clinton, and this could be the year in which he crosses over to become a mainstream 'face' in his own right. Supporting Kings Of Leon at BST in front of 60,000 people won't hurt.

Dea Matrona

For Your Sins , the debut album from Belfast's Dea Matrona, is a wonderfully accomplished piece of modern rock, flitting across genres lines, while serving up some killer bluesy riffs and gorgeously addictive vocals on songs such as So Damn Dangerous , Stamp On It and Wilderness. Years honing their craft in Irish clubs mean Orláith Forsythe and Mollie McGinn are a formidable live band too, so playing alongside the likes of The Corrs and Natalie Imbruglia in support to pop-country queen Shania Twain on July 7 will be an excellent opportunity to raise their profile.

At this point we could attempt some lame justification for including Kylie in this list, perhaps pointing to her 1995 duet with Nick Cave on Where The Wild Roses Grow , or her Manic Street Preachers co-write Some Kind Of Bliss (1997), but come on, who doesn't love Kylie? Who would want to live in a Minogue-less world? Not us. We're not being ironic when we say that Tension was one of 2023's finest albums, and if you think there's more fun to be had in any field in England than one in which you can hear Spinning Around , Slow , Can't Get You Out Of My Head , Padam Padam , and Confide In Me in quick succession you are, with all due respect, mistaken.
