Star Trek Blueprints were started by Franz Joseph in 1975 when he created and published his Star Fleet Technical Manual blueprints for Star Trek . Over the past 30+ years a number of technical manuals have been created by a number of individuals, both fans and professional artists, to cover the ever-increasing variety of ships, vehicles, and equipment which are considered both canon and non-canon .

Two of the technical manual creators went on to work on the set of Star Trek.

  • Rick Sternbach was hired as an official illustrator for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and subsequently was hired to work on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager and worked on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual and the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual published by Pocket Books .
  • Geoffrey Mandel was hired as scenic artist on Star Trek: Voyager , Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Star Charts published by Pocket Books.

Both of these blueprint creators moved on from humble creators of blueprints and technical manuals to help shape the look of the Star Trek universe.

  • Shane Johnson went on to publish the official publication Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise and Worlds of the Federation , both produced by Pocket Books after creating his fan-produced blueprints.

Star Fleet Technical Manual

STAR FLEET COMMAND Star Fleet Headquarters United Federation of Planets Franz Joseph United Federation Representative Stardate 7512.02 to: Ballantine Books Planetary Agents, NA, USA 10022 United Nations/Earth/Sol System 1. A printed Terran version of the Star Fleet Technical Manual was approved by the Federation Council for release to the civilians, and civilian auxiliaries on your planet. We have reviewed copies of this version as printed by you, and wish to assure you and the others that these copies are precisely correct and complete as authorized. We believe some of your civilians are confused because they are unfamiliar with the system and arrangement of Technical Orders, therefore, we offer the following by way of clarification. 2. The print-out version of the Star Fleet Technical Manual, as used by the Star Fleet Academy, is a collection of only those Technical Orders necessary to the indoctrination of new cadets until such time as they have become experienced in the use of the data read-out stations of Mastercom/SFHQ. Further the Terran version contains even fewer Technical Orders because of the prohibition of the Prime Directive. Neither version is a 'book' of 'pages' as the questioners seem to think - nor do they contain 'all' of the technical information stored in the data banks of Mastercom/SFHQ. Your civilians must understand these technical data banks contain all the knowledge presently known within the United Federation of Planets from all of the Member planets. If it were to be published in 'book' form, the sum total would amount to more books than you now have stored in your 'libraries.' Obviously, this cannot be done. It is equally obvious that you cannot have the galactic knowledge of future centuries given to your planet as a 'gift;' you must earn it by your own efforts lust as the others have done. 3. In the Terran version, the General Index summarizes the subject area groupings by Technical Order number blocks as a part of the total system of classification. It does not give the total classification system, nor does it indicate whether or not such subject matter is available. The Introduction (T.0:00:00:06) for instance, is not included because it has not been authorized for release at this time. Each Section Index lists the Technical Orders currently approved for each section, and shows which are the correct issue by authentication date (and amendment code - if required). Thus a Section Index shows whether or not a particular Manual contains the correct issues. Those which are listed with an asterisk may become available in a future print-out from Mastercom/SFHQ. Other Technical Order numbers which are missing do not appear by reason of the prohibition of the Prime Directive, or they have not been approved for release at this time. 4. In as gentle and as diplomatic manner as we may, we should like to point out that this confusion is just another example of the many primitive attributes of your planet which prevent its acceptance into the United Federation of Planets at this time in your current calendar. But be patient, the day will come in the future when your planet will have finally overcome these obstacles, and will take its place in the intergalactic community of intelligent life forms. Live long and prosper.

Manuals and Guides

Theta Fleet Engineering has many technical manuals and guides that are available to read or download. These resources have been used by our Engineers to create the specifications and information on this website. Please note that these Manuals are very Treknology heavy and you might find some of them rather confusing. But they are here for you to access and learn from. Please feel free to ask our staff about anything in these technical manuals.

The One And Only Time Star Trek: The Original Series Showed The Federation Flag

B ecause "Star Trek" is set in a presumably idyllic future -- when war is at an end, money has been removed from the equation, and diplomatic togetherness rules the day -- one will see few open displays of tribalism or jingoism. No one in "Star Trek" can yell about how much they love their country because, functionally, there are no countries. At least not on Earth. Occasionally, Chekov (Walter Koenig) will express pride, or even smugness, about his Russian heritage , but his attitude couldn't be read as "patriotism." Instead, he has become a smaller part of a large human tapestry, now united and working together to explore the galaxy, expand knowledge, and share ideas.

Perhaps ironically, the widespread multiculturalism of the United Federation of Planets is dressed in military uniforms and sails about the heavens in starships armed with phasers and photon torpedoes. "Star Trek" has all the visual trappings of tribalism while constantly preaching anti-colonialist philosophies. This may be why one doesn't see a lot of flags in "Star Trek." Characters don't pledge allegiance to a flag in "Star Trek," but make oaths to protect all life, keep fighting to a minimum, expand their knowledge, and uphold the open-minded progressive ideals of Starfleet. It's no mystery why the Starfleet "delta" symbol points upward.

There is a flag for the United Federation of Planets, but it was only on-screen in one episode of the original series: "And the Children Shall Lead" (October 11, 1968). Weirdly, the episode has nothing to do with the workings of the Federation, nor intergalactic politics. One cannot say why the UFP flag was employed here.

The Star Trek Flag For The United Federation Of Planet

"And the Children Shall Lead" is actually about a group of kids, all under 12, who have been manipulated by a charismatic ghost alien (played by real-life lawyer Melvin Belli) into murdering their parents and, later, taking over the Enterprise. The episode's early scenes see the children obliviously playing tag among their parents' graves, and one of them knocks over a UFP pennant. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) hoists it up and replants it in the dirt.

The UFP pennant would be the only on-screen Federation flag in "Star Trek" until "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in 1982 . Naturally, enterprising fans would make their own pennants, and expanded universe lore and nerdy sourcebooks would have plenty of diagrams explaining the pennant and its meaning. In Joseph Franz's 1975 book "Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual," the pennant was sketched out in detail, but in black and white, explaining that the lettering should be white and the stars should be silver. This color description, as one can see above, doesn't match the on-screen version from "Children." There is no explanation as to why there are 13 stars on the pennant, as the Federation was founded by four worlds: Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar.

In the episode "The Ultimate Computer" (March 8, 1968), an eagle-eyed Trekkie might notice the UFP pennant painted on the exterior of a Federation space station, but know that it was added digitally when the effects for the episode were remastered. "Children" came later in the series, but is still the first appearance of the UFP flag.

The Flag On Spock's Coffin

The Federation flag from other episodes of "Star Trek" were, by the admission of the showrunners, merely the UN flag, usually filmed in such a way as to be obscure. In "Wrath of Khan," however, the crew of the Enterprise holds a full-blown funeral for Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and, in military fashion, they drape his coffin in a Federation flag. As one can see, the flag was now rectangular, blue, and emblazoned with a starfield and a laurel wreath, or olive branches.

A similar version of that flag would appear a few years later on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," showing that the Federation logo was now a globe-like starfield with laurels on either side of it. That UFP symbol would appear frequently throughout '90s Trek as it would appear on screens after top-secret communiqués. The laurels/olive branches presumably stood for peace.

Weirdly, in the 2013 film "Star Trek Into Darkness," the alternate universe UFP flag would still feature the starfield and the olive branches, but the starfield was superimposed over a "cogwheel"-shaped gear-like image. Around this time, the UFP flag started to be handled like an American flag at military functions, not only draped over officers' coffins, but meticulously folded and handed to others as a symbol of mourning and respect. The folding took place in the "Star Trek: Discovery" episode "All is Possible" (November 9, 2021).

Trekkies, meanwhile, are perfectly fine to spend their mid-capitalist dollars on "Star Trek" merch slathered with the UFP flag. My current mousepad sports the logo. "Star Trek" may be above jingoistic devotion to a flag, but we here back in the 21st century still love to let our fan flags fly.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Interactive Technical Manual

  • View history

However, the use of Apple's then-new Quicktime VR software allows a fully interactive exploration of many areas of the ship. Various sets from the TV show were photographed thousands of times, at various angles. These photographs were then stitched together to allow 360 degree viewing at a number of points in each location. It is possible to zoom into many control panels, and to closely examine a number of objects. Some control panels are interactive and can trigger sequences, such as transporting or firing phasers.

Movement within the ship is performed either by a simple jump from location to location, or by a animated trip through the corridor and turbolift sets. Ship ambiance is as on the TV show, with background sounds, control panel audio, and computer narration by Majel Barrett . The interactive tour option gives the user a introduction to every ship area, and is narrated by Jonathan Frakes .

Program compatibility [ ]

It is very difficult to get the Interactive Technical Manual to work in operating systems newer than Microsoft Windows 3.1, for which it was designed. It is possible to get it working on Windows 9x, but one must seek out the 16-bit version of QuickTime 2.1.2. The included QuickTime does not work correctly with Windows 9x. QuickTime 2.1.2 16-bit can have problems with various video card drivers. These can be remedied by changing video display options within QuickTime's applet inside the Windows control panel.

On Windows NT-based operating systems, such as Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, it is not possible to operate the program natively. However, it can be run inside a Microsoft Virtual PC-emulated Windows 9x system. This software is available as a free download from Microsoft, but the user must own Windows 95 or 98.

The program runs at 640×480 resolution and will be letterboxed if the system is running at a higher resolution. The program documentation recommends 8-bit color depth, probably due to performance concerns, but it does look better if 32-bit color is used.

A version 2.0 of this program was released and distributed as a bonus disc with the TNG Season 2 DVD box set at Best Buy. The upgrade replaced the 16-bit program with a new 32-bit version that uses QuickTime 4.0 or above. Windows NT-based users could move the program files and main font to the appropriate folders manually to bypass any issues with the installer not running correctly. The 32-bit upgrade also allowed the program to run on 64-bit architectures.

About the authors

Dayton ward.

If you’re reading this, then chances are you’ve read one of my books or are considering doing so. Or, maybe you just clicked on a link by mistake while on your way to something more interesting.

Doesn’t matter. Welcome!

So…about me. Yeah…well, you see, it’s like this: Until recently, I was a software developer and analyst, having become a slave to Corporate America after spending eleven years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Why did I join the military? Pretty simple, really. I’d gotten tired of people telling me what to do all the time, and was looking for a change.

In truth, I joined for a handful of different reasons, from carrying on a family tradition to wanting a challenge unlike anything else I’d faced to that point to simpler stuff like just wanting to see the world. I’m proud of my time spent in uniform. I gave Uncle Sam eleven years, and he gave me a long list of skills and experiences that have continued to serve me to this day. I think I got the better end of that deal by a fairly wide margin.

In September 2014, I said goodbye to my day job and embarked on a bold new journey as a full-time writer.

Though I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, fate and circumstances have seen to it that my family and I now call Kansas City home.
