Hardcore Favorites Snapcase Talk Reunion Shows, New Songs, Violent Mosh Pits

1o6a1344_1.jpg, Mark Miller

Formed in 1991, Buffalo's Snapcase not only helped usher in a new wave of hardcore that pushed the limits of the genre, but they also rode that wave towards crossover success, becoming a nationally recognized touring act along the way. Though the band's approach is very much rooted in hardcore, the quintet wasn't afraid to experiment sonically, incorporating everything from harmonics to heavy feedback in order to punctuate its start-stop rhythms. Records like Steps and Progression Through Unlearning will be remembered as some of the best in the genre, and in large part responsible for hardcore's crawl into the mainstream.

Though the group called it quits in 2005, Snapcase have sporadically played gigs across the country, last hitting New York City in 2011 as part of an anniversary event for Sick of It All at Webster Hall. Now, the Buffalo team is set to ignite Brooklyn with a pair of sold-out gigs at Brooklyn Bazaar, on May 11th, and Saint Vitus, on May 12th. With the shows fast approaching, Revolver spoke with vocalist Daryl Taberski about what he's been up to, the current status of the band and what the deal was with that new Snapcase track that recently surfaced.

SO SNAPCASE ARE DOING THESE SHOWS IN BROOKLYN — WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO SEE? I KNOW THAT YOU RECENTLY PLAYED A NEW SONG IN BUFFALO. ARE THERE OTHER NEW SONGS BUBBLING UP? DARYL TABERSKI We've been writing some new material here and there. We did finish the song that we played at the show in Buffalo called "Spike Up Your Tone," kind of a positive song. We've been playing shows on and off, a couple of shows a year. Last year we played a festival in Spain, which was pretty fun with Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies, among a lot of other bands. We also played the Fest in Gainesville with Hot Water Music, which was a really good time. We've been getting out there and playing some shows and it's been a lot of fun.

SO AS FAR AS WRITING, DO YOU INTEND TO WRITE MORE AND RELEASE SOMETHING IN THE FUTURE? We are interested in writing more material and we have parts for a lot of different songs, it's just a matter of coming together and completing songs. We haven't really discussed, "Oh, are we going to do an EP? Are we going to do a 7-inch or are we gonna do an album?" Right now we need to just keep getting together and working on material and also having fun.

When we were a full-time active band, it became more like a job: "OK, this is what we need to do and sustain." Sometimes you can lose a little bit of the fun doing that, and now it's a lot of fun. We all have full-time jobs outside of music and we all need the outlet to kind of rock and have a good time.

WHEN DID YOU WRITE THE NEW SONG? WAS IT BASED ON PARTS THAT EXISTED, OR HOW MUCH OF IT WAS FRESH? So we do have a lot of parts that have been laying around. Some of them for a long time and some of them not as long. This song came together on its own and it's fresh. We said we wanted to write a song that was a little bit more, like, old-school Snapcase, a little bit more straightforward hardcore type of song and that's what it is. It's definitely a fun song to play live. We played it in Buffalo and that's the first time we played it outside of the rehearsal space. And that's the only time so far. So looking forward to playing it again.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FULL-TIME WORK? I got a master's in social work and spent 12 years working as a social worker at an inpatient psychiatric hospital, so lots and lots of interesting stories about working and helping a lot of great people. It's something that I take very seriously — helping people with mental health concerns and all kinds of life issues. It's always been sort of a subject in Snapcase lyrics, as well.

John [ Salemi ], our one guitar player, he's got a professional race car business. So he builds race car chassis, he tunes drag racers and also his wife drives drag racing cars and they do that internationally. So they're a pretty high professional level at that. Tim [ Redmond ], our drummer, he's a schoolteacher. He's got a PhD. Frank [ Vicario, guitar ] and Dustin [ Perry, bass ] are both computer guys. They're pretty active in the computer world and that's what their job is.

REGARDING SNAPCASE LYRICS, THERE ARE A BUNCH OF SONGS THAT ALLUDE TO DRUGS AND MENTAL HEALTH. THE ONE THAT COMES INTO MY HEAD IMMEDIATELY IS "ZOMBIE PRESCRIPTION," WHICH TO ME IS ALMOST A BORDERLINE SCIENTOLOGY IDEA ... I don't know enough about scientology, so that was not my intent. But a lot of Snapcase songs can be interpreted in different ways and that's something I'm perfectly fine with. My attraction to the hardcore scene was that the lyrics always had strong meanings and, in some bands, it's kind of easier to decipher what those meanings are. Other bands, it's not as obvious and I would say Snapcase is somewhere in the middle. But "Spike up Your Tone" is our new song and it's kind of something just looking forward to the social climate these days and something to be more self-motivating. And sometimes all you've got is yourself. It's a self-motivation type of song.

Maybe it's something I felt like I needed in my adult life, post-touring. I hit a point where I realized like, "Wow, I really miss that creative outlet. I need music." I kind of missed the aggressive part of hardcore and getting out there and screaming my head off and throwing my body around. I missed a lot of these things. So I needed to make some changes in my own life. There was a number of other personal things I wanted to work on, things that I focused on over the past year or two and it felt great. And so that's where the lyrics for that came from.

As far as the musical thing, I also have another project band, which is kind of interesting. So my first cousin, he and I have always been in touch. He was in the band Windhand.

WHO'S YOUR COUSIN? Asechiah Bogdan. So Asechiah is not in Windhand now, but started writing new material and asked me if I'd like to do a project with him. We've been working on that and it's kind of been another big focus of mine probably over the past six months or so.

FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I CAN'T ENVISION WHAT THE SUM OF THOSE TWO PARTS LOOK LIKE. HOW ARE YOU APPROACHING IT? IS HE PLAYING GUITAR? Yeah, he's playing guitar, as he did in Windhand. He did write, he came up with all the songs, initially. I wouldn't say it's a big departure from Windhand, and I'm not doing Snapcase, so it's kind of fun for both of us to come together. We've recorded five songs at this point and they're getting mixed and I think that people will be hearing something fairly soon. So there's no record label. There's none of that right now. We're just sort of taking it one step at a time. The focus initially was the music and he and I doing something that was good for both of us. So it'll be interesting.

I'M INTERESTED TO HEAR THAT. WHO ELSE IS ON THIS RELEASE? A guy that was a mutual [ friend ], very close to Asechiah, but also someone that I had toured with in the past is Erik Larson, who played drums. Erik was in Alabama Thunderpussy and before that Avail. So he's the drummer. And Dustin from Snapcase is also a part of this project.

DO YOU THINK YOU WILL DO DATES WITH THIS PROJECT? We're not there yet, but it depends. We're not forcing anything with that. We'll see what comes, where the interests are and what feels right for us and how it all comes together.

HAVE YOU GUYS EVER PLAYED TOGETHER OR IS THIS MORE OF AN EMAIL THING THUS FAR? We have played together in a studio in Virginia.

AS FAR AS SNAPCASE DOING DATES, ANY PLANS TO DO ANY TOURING? It would be difficult for us all to tour because of our full-time jobs and family and things of that nature. I feel like playing these two shows in Brooklyn ... I'm excited because I miss playing shows that are more of a hardcore feel where there's not a barricade, they're not big tall stages. I've always liked those kinds of chaotic, more punk-type shows where people are falling on top of the stage and the band is falling into the crowd and that kind of thing. That's what I love, that's what I'm looking forward to. Hopefully, we can get that kind of energy.

ONE THING I'VE NOTICED IN MY LIFETIME IS THE SHIFT TOWARD VIOLENCE AT HARDCORE SHOWS — THE TERM "CROWD-KILLING" DIDN'T EXIST. HOW MUCH OF THAT DID YOU ENCOUNTER AS A BAND, AND WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER THAT AS A FACTOR IN YOUR BAND'S SPLIT? No, I don't think that it had much to do with Snapcase going down or anything like that. I think for us it was more personal and personal motivation and where your focus is. But you bring up a good point because for me hardcore is all about the live elements. I didn't get into hardcore as a kid to sit in my bedroom and listen to records — and certainly that becomes part of it — but going to the show and feeling like you're singing along and one with the band and also one with the crowd, you know, that's everything. That was amazing. And something that you don't see in a lot of other scenes and for that to be missing is problematic. There was a sense of community and a sense of unity. The shows that we've played over the past couple years, I have felt that and I have seen that. That's been good. There are some scenes where the mosh pit, so to speak, is more of a individual thing and individual dancing. And I don't really get that, to be quite honest. I don't understand the big hole in front of the stage. I liked everyone packed up and singing along. We'll see what happens in these shows in New York .

SNAPCASE PICKED OUT SOME OF THE OPENERS ON THE BILL. WHAT DO THESE BANDS MEAN TO YOU, PERSONALLY? Well, Burn is legendary. I'm really excited about sharing the stage with all four of these bands. Burn is a band that, I can still remember when the first 7-inch came out, and I think we all were listening to it and checking it out at a Snapcase practice. Kinda just getting motivated and inspired by that. Then even later on when Chaka [ Malik ] was doing Orange 9mm, that was something that Snapcase were all super into and that got a lot of heavy rotation in our tour van. Primitive Weapons, I haven't seen them yet and I'm excited to. I've listened to them online. Same thing with Gears, and same thing with some Sharptooth. I'm excited to see them play.

CAN WE EXPECT A LOT OF THE OLD FAVORITES TO BE BROKEN OUT IN BROOKLYN? Yeah. We haven't actually even put the set list together yet, but literally any day now. It's Mother's Day weekend by the way, so everyone, don't forget. I had to break the news to my wife and we have a three-year-old son. She's like, "Oh yeah, good idea, Mother's Day weekend ..." We played Buffalo on my son's first birthday and I'm the kind of person that's like, "Oh, sure, cool. It doesn't matter! Any time." Oops.

I'M SURE THE FIRST THING OUT OF HER MOUTH WAS, "WHY NOT FATHER'S DAY INSTEAD?" I'll play on Christmas, I don't care.

Twenty Years Later: Snapcase's 'Progression Through Unlearning'

Snapcase

Today, we are continuing our Twenty Years Later series. Helmed by Staffer Michael Musilli, the series will look back at hardcore and harcore-ish records at their 20 year mark. Not only will the pieces include analysis of a record's importance, but Musilli also contacted a slew of hardcore musicians in order to get their perspective on landmark records. Today, Musilli takes an in-depth look at Snapcase 's Progression Through Unlearning . Check it out below.

Progression Through Unlearning: Snapcase’s Prescription for the Guilty

Michael Musilli

The upstate New York area has, for many years, been crafting its own brand of hardcore music. Buffalo in particular was a hotbed, offering up Despair and Buried Alive, Every Time I Die, Zero Tolerance, and Snapcase among many others. And while all of the aforementioned bands made their marks on the national scene, it was Snapcase whose impact was most felt. From Lookinglasself to Steps, we were offered a harmonically heavy and insightful hardcore band with socially conscious lyrics. With Progression Through Unlearning , Snapcase offered up an LP that bent the genre and opened audiences to an entirely new sound.

Progression Through Unlearning was the band’s third release on Victory Records and was released during the hey-day of Victory promotion and dominance. While Snapcase and the record itself certainly benefited from Victory’s then-desire to earnestly develop their roster, they also had a sound that was ready to break barriers. What they had planted on their previous releases, was now blossoming into a full-bodied sonic progression trademarked by their use of harmonic leads laid over grooving hardcore-ish rhythms. What they reined in on songs like “Drain Me” and “Windows” became their signature throughout Progression… Maybe even more remarkable was that Snapcase had switched primary song writers between the release of Steps and Progression… With the departure of Scott Dressler, Frank Vicario took over as the band’s primary song writer. That’s headache enough for any band, but Snapcase had just hit their sonic stride with Steps.

And yet, everything came together for Frank and company on Progression… From the opening drum hits on “Caboose” it was clear that Snapcase hadn’t missed a step. In fact, they had also managed to further push their sound. Floating throughout that song were all of the pieces that Snapcase had assembled in their previous six or so years as a band. Their mix of driving rhythms, the staccato delivery of Taberski’s vocals, the innovative leads, and the stunningly tight-popping drum beats had coalesced into an aggressive and forceful machine.

That machine strode the line between more traditional hardcore heavyweights like Sick of It All and more melodious underground rockers like Shift. This straddling of sorts is a huge part of Progression’s… importance too. Ryan Young, frontman for Off With Their Heads, recalls, “I remember throwing the CD in the player and being immediately changed by it. It not only didn't sound like a punk band, but it didn't sound like any other hardcore band I had heard either.” Snapcase was able to maintain that definitively hardcore angst while managing to appeal to a diverse fan base. So it was that the band would play the main stage at Warped Tour and open for Deftones and Quicksand, while also touring with Buried Alive and Kid Dynamite in the years around Progression Through Unlearning ’s release.

For Jeremy Smith, guitarist for Buffalo’s No Reason and Dead Hearts, “Snapcase were accessible and brought younger kids, interested in digging deeper into the Buffalo hardcore scene, around to other shows to see other bands. They brought an energy that young people wanted to be a part of and kids really plugged in to that and started coming out.” That energy was palpable in so many ways. For those who saw Snapcase live, it was felt through their uber-kinetic sets. But that energy was also captured in the record’s lyrical content.

Taberski challenged the listener on every song. Be it “Guilty By Ignorance” and its scathing evaluation of consumer culture or “Killing Yourself to Live” and its reflection on the drudgery of workaday life, the lyrics offered up insightful commentaries. And then there was the power of the record’s fifth track, “Zombie Prescription.” The song’s haunting and pioneering guitar leads aside, the energy that Daryl captured vocally on the song is unmatched. He wrote and delivered lyrics that were at once antagonistic and violent, and wholly introspective and thoughtful. Often times a band can offer one or the other, almost never can a band offer all. Yet here it all was on a single record, and threaded through every song.

But what might be the most interesting aspect of the record is its originality, both then and now. For the many bands who’ve cited Progression Through Unlearning as a watershed release – everyone from Refused to Deftones – none has quite managed to capture that sound. Boy Sets Fire guitarist, Chad Istvan, offers, “I literally remember where I was the first time I heard Progression…From the first drum hits, I was blown away by how heavy, energetic and original they sounded. This was the new benchmark and everyone else was left trying to catch up.” And this uniqueness makes Snapcase a compelling lesson in ingenuity. The sound and energy harnessed on Progression… remains locked in there. As Jukai guitarist Kyle Beshaw notes, “The term ‘hardcore’ in the mid to late nineties was a term that, in my opinion, was being stretched and punctured through with bands experimenting in other influences. Snapcase…were right in the thick of it and it’s crazy evident on Progression Through Unlearning .” Frank, Daryl, and the band were testing themselves. They were pushing out against the often restrictive bubble of hardcore sound. That’s something the band had done since Lookinglasself. And Progression Through Unlearning may just have been the culmination of that experimentation.

Progression Through Unlearning also thrust Snapcase into venues with much wider audiences. The record offered them an opportunity to continue to experiment not only with sound but also with their identity as band. One could see them opening for Bad Religion. Or one could see them headlining a tour themselves, bringing along friends like Boy Sets Fire and then-new acts like Saves the Day. No Reason’s Smith remembers, “I’m not even talking about how their ‘style’ of hardcore changed what kids were playing locally or nationwide; I’m talking about what THEY DID for Buffalo, just by being the kind of band they were… although Snapcase were a band playing huge venues and enormous tours, they still liked to ‘give back’ to Buffalo.” Similar sentiments are echoed by Boy Sets Fire’s Istvan, “[Snapcase] were really good to us and I credit a lot of how well we did to them.” For all the success they achieved with Progression…, they still kept their musical community close. While one could say that’s a basic tenet of the underground, it’s also easier said than done.

But Snapcase didn’t say it. They did it. With the release of Progression…, they changed the sound of hardcore and heavy music. That change may seem more subtle at times, but it’s there. Snapcase and Progression Through Unlearning remain a reminder that a particular sound is only one component of any genre. And they remind us that experimenting and testing our boundaries is often a very productive and creative exercise. Off With Their Heads’ Young recalls, “because of that specific record, I wound up going to see [Snapcase] as a 16 year old kid by myself. Watching the energy from that kind of show pretty much planted the seed for what I would do with my life.” Snapcase innovated and inspired. And Progression Through Unlearning is pinnacle evidence of those achievements.

Snapcase Take Over For Orgy On Papa Roach Tour

snapcase on tour

After illness forced Orgy to pull out of Papa Roach's Raid the Nation tour, finding a replacement was a snap.

Buffalo, New York, quintet Snapcase will fill the slot left vacant by the glam-tinged group, who withdrew after guitarist Amir Derakh was diagnosed with mononucleosis (see [article id="502130"]"Orgy Pull Out Of Papa Roach Tour Due To Illness"[/article]), according to the tour's publicist. The hardcore group rounds out a lineup that includes Alien Ant Farm.

Snapcase will join the jaunt as the second act beginning April 1 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, though the tour itself kicks off March 18 in Pensacola. Until Snapcase sign on, a local band will open each show.

After the first leg draws to a close on April 13 in Boston, the bands get a brief break while Papa Roach heads to London for a Brixton Academy gig on April 16. When the second leg launches, industrial headbangers Fear Factory will replace Snapcase on the bill. A second-leg itinerary will be announced shortly.

Snapcase have been a favorite of Papa Roach frontman Coby Dick for a while, especially after both bands toured together on last year's Vans Warped Tour (see [article id="1429730"]"Green Day Join Vans Warped Lineup"[/article]). Since forming in 1991, Snapcase have released four albums, including last year's Designs for Automotion.

Once they're finished raiding the nation, Snapcase will begin working on their next album, which they hope to release in late September or early October, according to their publicist at Victory Records. On June 5, an as-yet-untitled rarities compilation, featuring revisited early demos and album outtakes, is scheduled to surface.

In other Snapcase news, singer Daryl Tabreski will marry his longtime girlfriend in late spring, according to the label spokesperson.

The Raid the Nation itinerary, according to the tour's publicist:

  • 3/18 - Pensacola, FL @ Bayfront Auditorium

Keep hard rock alive by purchasing your Snapcase tickets through TicketSmarter. Snapcase is a New York-based band that’s best known for its energetic live performances and extensive worldwide tours. Formed in 1991, this band has shared the stage with some of the biggest rock names, including Atreyu, Bad Religion, BoySetsFire, Deftones and Finch. The band released its first EP, Snapcase , in 1991, and its success helped them secure a record deal with Victory Records.

Snapcase experienced significant changes to its lineup in the early 1990s, including multiple singers and the band’s drummer. In 1993, the band released its first studio album, Lookingglasself . While the album did well and garnished the band thousands of fans, it wasn’t until the band’s 1997 album, Progression Through Unlearning , that they gained national attention. The album was called revolutionary by hardcore rock fans, and the attention the album drew helped Snapcase land a spot in the Vans Warped Tour. One of the album’s hit singles, “Breaking and Reaching,” was featured on Cartoon Network’s Toonami’s Mobile Fighter G Gundam in 2002.

Snapcase tickets became available internationally for the first time in 2000 as the band took on a lengthy tour in Europe to support its album, Designs for Automotion . The group released two more albums in the early 2000s, End Transmission and Bright Flashes , before going on hiatus in 2005. Snapcase reunited in 2010, and while the band did not release another album between 2010 and 2021, they toured extensively worldwide.

Everything I learned about EA Sports’ College Football 25 after two hours of gameplay

Everything I learned about EA Sports’ College Football 25 after two hours of gameplay

ORLANDO, Fla. — Broadly, there are two kinds of college football video game players: those who drifted away from gaming when the NCAA Football franchise went away and those that have continued to play Madden for their up-to-date football video game fix. I played every NCAA Football and Madden from 2002 to 2014, then got out of gaming after college.

Last week at EA Sports’ office in Orlando, I was back at the controls as part of a small group of reporters and YouTube creators invited to tour the studio, meet the developers, test the game and get a rundown of what to expect in all the other game modes for both Madden and College Football 25. After 11 years away, the college football game is coming back this July, and the people who make the game emphasized that this game is for all of FBS college football. Playing the game makes that very clear.

In the years since the game’s production was halted by fears of further litigation over the NCAA ’s name, image and likeness restrictions, I did not play College Football Revamped, the online modern update of NCAA 14, but EA did hire people from that team to work on this game. I have periodically played the recent Madden games and consulted with my gaming friends on their feelings and concerns about modern gameplay coming into this.

To cut to the chase and get to what they and everyone else really want to know: Playing College Football 25 was very fun. We weren’t allowed to take photos or video of gameplay because the game is not yet finished. We couldn’t test Dynasty mode or other modes. A few bugs popped up during games, which we flagged for developers. That’s normal. Although teams and players had ratings, we were told the ratings process hadn’t been completed, and because the numbers I saw may not match the ratings when the game is released in July, I won’t share them here.

The College Football 25 event included a three-hour period for gameplay and interviews, so I played about two hours of game action on the PS5. The refrain I heard several times from people in the building last week was, “Every team is someone’s favorite team.” I didn’t play more than a quarter with any one team because I wanted to experience as many different environments and playbooks as possible. The event offered so much information about College Football 25 that we’ve split this up into multiple stories and will have more to come after today. You can read about Dynasty mode and EA’s approach to NIL here.

As for playing the game mode, here’s what I learned over two hours.

The in-game playing experience is incredibly smooth and realistic

The first team I pulled up was Virginia Tech because I wanted to experience the Hokies’ “Enter Sandman” entrance. Unfortunately, “Enter Sandman” is not in the game — licensing Metallica songs is really expensive. It has been replaced by a generic rock theme that sounds somewhat familiar. So that was a disappointment. (“Jump Around” is also not played in games at Camp Randall Stadium, for similar reasons.) But the feeling quickly dissipated when I began playing the actual game.

If you take one thing away from reading this, it’s that running the ball is actually fun. The blocking AI is really well done, and players are rewarded for hitting the hole. The game has new physics-based tackling, based on where and how hard a hit is made, that looks much more realistic than Madden 24. Breaking tackles or falling forward through them becomes more likely if you follow blockers correctly.

The flip side is that playing defense is tougher. If you’re one of those people like me who used to just use the Hit Stick when your defender was close to a ball carrier, that won’t cut it anymore. For advanced players, the right joystick helps you switch between defensive players more quickly, which helps in the secondary and in some situations where close control of two players is necessary.

This is where the new Wear and Tear system comes into play. Not all hits are equal, but if a player is taking big hits, certain body parts on a model will turn orange and then red on the play screen to indicate his increased chance of injury. A player’s Strength attribute corresponds with how much impact he can take, and bigger players have more Strength. If you put a small wide receiver at QB and run the option, he’ll be more likely to get injured. The longer the game, the more the injury chances rise.

What's in College Football 25's Dynasty mode? Everything we know

The passing game is revamped, as is kicking

As the quarterback, the ability to layer the football is the key. When you throw the ball, a meter appears above the receiver, similar to an option in Madden 24. Obviously, tapping or holding a button creates the difference between a floater and a rocket, but holding the button as long as you can to the end of the meter can impact the throw’s accuracy.

The same goes for kicking. The new meter has a ball rock left and right; you click and hold to get the accuracy, and then the power meter goes up the arrow. If you hold it to the very top into the red, the accuracy can take a hit. While I was playing as Penn State , Ohio State doinked a kick, so there is real downside. (I couldn’t tell whether there was a “doink” sound because of the noise in the room).

The playbooks have always differentiated college football games from Madden, and that’s the case again. College Football 25 has 134 different playbooks, part of 10 different offensive styles. I committed many delay of game penalties just looking through the playbooks. There are different menus for plays, ranging from coach suggestions to formations to concepts and more. The play menu design is essentially the same as Madden 24.

I spent a good 20 minutes with Wake Forest to test the Demon Deacons’ RPO slow-mesh offense. The RPO options include four different kinds of plays: read, peek, alert and glance. You can choose to throw a quick pass instead of hand off, but you have to do it quickly, or else you’ll be hit with an illegal man downfield penalty. That happened to me several times. I didn’t find any actual slow mesh plays, but a developer said they should be in the final game.

I also spent some time with Air Force to test the triple-option. One change in the option and RPO plays is that you tap a button to pull the ball as the quarterback, rather than pressing a button to hand it off like in the past. That was an adjustment. There are also two options on pitches: Similar to throwing the ball downfield, you can tap LB for a quick pitch or hold it for a stronger pitch.

The pre-snap options are deep

The capabilities players enjoy before the snap have also grown. You can adjust pass protection to go in a certain direction, an improved process from Madden 24. When calling a hot route, custom stems allow you to adjust how far downfield you want an out route to go. Senior quarterbacks can see more than freshmen, like the possibility of a blitz or a certain kind of defense.

And yes, there are custom playbooks and custom audibles. There’s also a two-minute warning, which will be new to college football this fall. Stadium Pulse is also back, and you can feel the loudest stadiums in the vibrating controller. As in the past, the play art on the field could be difficult to read, and audibles and hot routes may not work, depending on the crowd.

The experiences of playing as the game’s best players and as its worst players are very different. For those gamers coming back from the old NCAA games, linebackers can’t jump sky-high for interceptions and easily run with slot receivers anymore. (The defensive AI still drops easy interceptions from time to time as in the old games.)

To answer the question everyone asks me, is the gameplay just like Madden? Yes and no. I’m not allowed yet to speak on Madden 25, which is built on the same engine (as is normal). But the gameplay in College Football 25 is extremely smooth, and there are differences between the games, such as the playbooks, the kicking meter, player attributes, Stadium Pulse and more.

How EA Sports tackled its big NIL problem in College Football 25

The sounds and visuals are what really stand out

The pageantry and the environments are what really separate college football from every other sport, and the video game reflects that.

EA Sports said it went through more than 1,000 photos per school to create 150 different stadiums. There are 16,000 different head combinations for players, including 240 shapes. The game took so long to make because it had to be created from scratch.

The average team has four helmets, three jerseys and three pants. Some have 20-plus options (hello, Oregon). You can see all the individual stitching in the jerseys because EA Sports employs a Creaform 3D handheld scanner that’s normally used for aerospace parts. Here, it’s used to scan cleats, gloves, helmets, jerseys and more, down to the tiniest detail. While NFL players have mostly the same equipment, college football has different apparel companies with unique designs. Those differences are noticeable in this game.

I’ve been asked whether helmets can be knocked off from a big hit. They cannot. Along those lines, the game does not have targeting penalties — controlling head placement is difficult to develop, and EA figured fans would just be annoyed about the rule like they are in real life.

The crowds are also unique. Michigan fans have the maize pom-poms. Missouri fans have the tiger tails. There are unique hand signs and Surrender Cobras . The student sections are positioned correctly, and we were told those fans will be seen standing during the game. Opposing fans and bands are also positioned in the correct spots in stadiums. As for in-progress renovated stadiums, Vanderbilt is shown post-renovation, but Northwestern still plays at Ryan Field. Kansas’ stadium will be pre-renovation at game launch.

Penn State has the White Out. Tennessee has the checkerboard. Boise State has the Stripe Out. Even the Texas A&M red, white and blue crowd after 9/11 is in the game — I’m not sure how that one activates, but special crowd colors will happen for the biggest games in Dynasty mode. We were told some teams have called EA Sports to let them know of crowd blackout plans later this season to be included in the game.

We saw the turnover chainsaw at Oregon State and the waterfalls at Arkansas State. EA Sports showed how it motion-captured players with the trophies, which included making wooden versions of trophies for virtual mo-cap players to hold. To simulate ripping through a sign, mo-cap players pushed through pool noodles. For Bevo, Ralphie and the dog mascots, an EA staff member pretended to be the animal positioned around mo-capped virtual players.

What makes this game feel as real as anything is the sound. You really notice it when music kicks in after the opening kickoff. While “Enter Sandman” is not in the game, “Zombie Nation,” “Sandstorm,” “Tsunami” and “Mo Bamba” are. We see the Army Corps of Cadets jump up and down for “Tsunami” before kickoff, something the TV broadcast rarely shows. Beaver Stadium plays “Zombie Nation” after Penn State touchdowns. Every school has unique fan chants, as EA acquired thousands of assets from schools and in many cases had staff members replicate the cheers for recording. The studio also recorded 41 real game crowds over the last two years, from big to small programs. And yes, I saw sheet music for an instrumental version of “Neck.”

Chris Fowler was on hand in Orlando to talk about his commentating for the game, and it was clear he’s still quite upset that ESPN blocked him from being in the game in the past. ESPN itself is not in this game as a brand, but its commentators are. There is no ESPN logo on the score bug, which has been relocated to the bottom of the screen. There is no “College GameDay”. Because I was focused on so many other parts of the game, the lack of ESPN was not something I even noticed; it still sounds like college football with Fowler/Kirk Herbstreit and Rece Davis/Jesse Palmer/David Pollack on the call.

Several camera options can be flipped through quickly with the arrow pad. Most sit at different height levels behind the quarterback, but a broadcast-ish option from the side of the field is available.

What’s not in the gameplay

Mascot mode is not in the game, to answer a question I got a lot. Players do not have X-Factors like in past Madden games. Online Dynasty mode cannot be played across consoles, but that and Mascot mode could come in future games.

You will not be able to edit the attributes of real-life players in the rosters. You can edit created players, but there supposedly will be blocks to keep you from making a player like Arch Manning , who did not opt into the game. In recent days, a handful of starting players have tweeted that they’d like to be in the game and don’t know how to opt in. I don’t know if or when they will get updated.

We did not get any more details on Ultimate Team and college football legends who could be in it, nor was there more information about Team Builder, which allows gamers to create schools. But both features will be in the game.

Did you get all of that? I took 10 pages of notes over two days, hoping to answer as many of your questions as possible. People crave every morsel of news about this game.

There will be player updates throughout the real season as EA sends out patches. If a freshman breaks out, EA will be able to update the rosters to reflect that. The dream for future games is that if a new trick play happens on a Saturday, EA may be able to push it out a few days later.

While most sports video games are just updates from the year before, College Football 25 is a completely new game. Pretty much nothing from NCAA 14 could carry over, and the final edition of NCAA is now two console generations behind (College Football 25 will only be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). The entire process of building this game will have taken more than four years, but it creates the foundation moving forward.

It was a surreal experience to play a new college football video game again. It’s really coming back. Do not consider this an official review. That will come closer to launch. This is my attempt to give you as much information as possible based on my limited time. I still want to actually play Dynasty mode and Road to Glory. There may be parts of the new game you and I don’t like. There are just so many things with this game I need to jump back into, and my two-ish hours of gameplay were just a small window.

It’s been a long 11 years, but the wait is almost over.
