The PGA Tour Champions (commonly known as the Champions Tour) is a senior golf tour specifically made for golfers above the age of 50. The Professional Golfers Association officially founded the tour over 40 years ago in 1980.

The beauty of golf is that it ages like fine wine. You’re never too old to play golf! Even if you want to play in a USGA Senior Amateur Championship .

Origin & History of the Senior Golf Tour

The Senior PGA Championship has been unofficially active since 1937 as a high-profile tournament. It was exclusive for golfers above the age of 50. 

However, in 1978, a profitable tournament between teams of the best senior golfers called the ‘Legends of Golf’ gave birth to the idea of an official senior golf tour.

The PGA formally established the ‘Senior PGA Tour’ in 1980. This senior tour was designed for golfers aged 50 and above to showcase their talent. 

The 1980 tour consisted of only four events. For comparison, the 2021 tour consisted of 25 events. A lot has changed over the years!

The total prize money in 1980 was $475,000, which would be worth $1,707,901 today.

The next ten years, from 1980-1990, saw a considerable increase in the popularity of the senior tournament. The 1990 season consisted of thirty-eight official events with four major tournaments. 

The entire prize money for the 1990 season was a whopping $17.8 million. In 2022, this prize money would be worth around $40,349,753.63 ! 

Fun Fact: Lee Trevino won 7 tournaments in the 1990 senior golf tour season. The most during the season.

Evolution of the PGA Tour Champions Name

In 2002, the tour was renamed the ‘Champions Tour’ till the 2015 season. The name PGA Tour Champions was adopted for the 2016 tour and onwards. 

Qualifying & Playing on the Senior Golf Tour

Competitors in the senior golf tour have to play multiple tournaments throughout the season. These events are usually played over three rounds or 54 holes. 

However, the five major championships of the tour are played over four rounds (72 holes) and have a 36-hole cut. Playing an additional round ensures bringing the best talent to the top of the standings.

Fun Fact: The average male golfer is estimated to hit a 219-yard drive. While the Senior Golf Tour’s average driving distance in 2022 was 282.0 yards . The longest drive of the tour was 308.8 yards by Padraig Harrington.

Senior Tour Age

With age comes wisdom. And the opportunity to qualify for the senior golf tour!

Here are a few requirements to qualify for the PGA Tour Champions:

• The Senior Tour age requirement is 50 years old minimum.
• Compete and qualify in the 72-hole Regional Qualifying Stage.
• All successful qualifiers and exempt players must come in the top 12 of the Final Qualifying Stage between 78 golfers.

Spots in the Senior Golf Tour

Understanding the qualification system of the PGA Tour Champions is complicated, and hardly anyone understands it, according to Bobby Clampett , a professional Golf player, and analyst.

PGA Champions from previous years make up 30 of the 81 players on the field. Another 30 spots are given to players in the top 70 of the PGA Tour and Tour Champions.

The rest of the players include the World Golf Hall of Fame members and winners of previous PGA tours. 

Players competing in the qualifying sessions also have a few spots reserved for them.

The 5 Senior Major Golf Championships & Their Winners

The Senior Major championships are a big deal in the tour. The best of the best golfers participate in Majors. Meaning that only players that meet certain criteria are given a spot in the Major tournament.

Major champions have their names go down in history books. This is one of the reasons why golfers praise Major events.  

There are five major championships in the PGA Tour Champions. These championships differ from the other tours as they are played over four rounds (as opposed to 3 in the standard events).

1. Senior PGA Championship 

The Senior PGA Championship is the oldest of the five senior major championships. The Championship was established in 1937. 

It was first played at the Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia, United States. 

The event was one of the four events in the inaugural of the PGA Tours Championship in 1980. The Championship event was played in Florida in 1980. Over the next 42 years, the event has taken place on 17 different courses in various cities.

The eligibility criteria for the Senior PGA Championship are slightly different. The criterion includes:

• The previous winners of the Senior PGA Championship. 
• Winners of other major tournaments are also eligible.  
• Members of the Ryders Cup team and top European and Japanese Senior Tour players can also qualify.

2022 Senior PGA Championship Winner: Steven Alker won the 2022 Championship held in Michigan.

Most wins in the Senior PGA Championship: Since 1980, the record number of wins in this championship is held by Hale Irwin . Irwin claimed the trophy in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2004. 

2. The Tradition

The Tradition, or the Regions Tradition , is one of the five senior major championships. This championship was established in 1989 in Arizona. In 2003 the event relocated to Oregon and has since moved to Alabama. 

The event is now hosted at the Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama. where players complete four rounds on the course and play 72 holes. 

The most recent event was held in 2022, marking its 30th year of play.

2022 Regions Tradition Winner: Steve Stricker took the trophy for the 2022 Tradition championship. The winner earned $375,000 for his victory in the tour. 

Most wins in the Regions Tradition: The record for the most number of wins in the Tradition is held by Jack Nicklaus . Nicklaus won the championship four times: in 1990, 1991, 1995, and 1996. 

3. U.S. Senior Open

The U.S. Senior Open is one of the most renowned five major championships in the PGA Tour Champions. The championship is administered by the United St ates Go lf Association . The PGA has recognized it as a major championship since its establishment.  

The championship was introduced in 1980 and was one of the four events in the first PGA Tour Champions in New York. It is currently played at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania.

The US Senior Open is open for both amateurs and professionals. However, experienced players tend to dominate the championship, like any other. 

2022 U.S. Senior Open Winner: The most recent champion is Padraig Harrington . He received  $720,000 for his winning share.

Most wins in the U.S. Senior Open: The record for most wins in the event is held by Mille r Barber , who won 3 events in 1982, 1984, and 1985.

4. Senior Players Championship

The Senior Players Championship is currently known as the Kaulig Companies Championship. It is also recognized as a major championship in the PGA Tour Champions. 

The Championship was first held in 1983, 3 years after the establishment of the PGA Senior Golf Tour. It was most recently held at the Firestone Country Club in Ohio. 

2022 Senior Players Championship Winner: The 2022 champion was Jerry Kelly , who received $450,000 for his victory in the event. 

Most wins in the Senior Players Championship: Bernhard Langer holds the record for winning the most trophies in the Senior Players Championship. He won the majors consecutively in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

5. The Senior Open Championship

The Senior Open Championship was recognized as a major in the PGA Tour Champions much later in 2003. 

The Championship was established in 1987 in the United Kingdom. Currently, it’s known as the Senior Open Championship by Rolex for sponsorship reasons.

Fun Fact: The Senior Open Championship i s the only senior major championship in the PGA seniors tour held outside the United States.

2022 Senior Open Championship by Rolex Winner: The 2022 champion for the Senior Open Championship is Darren Clarke. He earned $432,080 for winning the major title.

Most wins in the Senior Open Championship by Rolex: Bernhard Langer also holds the title for most wins in Senior Open Championship. He won the tournaments in 2010, 2014, 2017, and 2019.

Legends of the LPGA (Women’s Senior Golf Tour)

Legends of the LPGA is a women’s senior golf tour. It’s a tour of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) for women over the age of 45.

The tour was established in 2000 by 25 retired LPGA players who modeled it after the men’s senior tour. 

From its initial days, the tour grew from two annual events to eleven events in 2013. 

In 2017, the Senior LPGA Championship was also inaugurated. This tournament is an annual tour event alongside the Senior Women’s Open. 

2022 Senior LPGA Winner: Karrie Webb won the 2022 Senior LPGA championship. She got prize money of $60,000 for her win.

Most wins in the Senior LPGA Championship: Trish Johnson holds the most wins in the Senior LPGA Championship. She won the championship twice in 2017 and 2021.

Senior Amateur Golf Tour

The Senior Amateur Golf Tour was established in 1999 for amateur players above the age of 50. 

It’s open to play for golfers of all skill levels. The only requirement is to be above the age of 50 and get a membership.

Players can get a membership to play in their local flights. Membership cards cost between $85 to $100 annually. The price variation depends on your location.

Moreover, you’ll need to pay a tournament fee to enter each tournament. The price again varies on your location but ranges from $65 to $100. 

Note: This price includes your green fee, golf cart, and range balls. The winning prize is also calculated from the tournament fee.

Players earn points by regularly playing in their local flights. 

Players can then compete in stroke-play tournaments locally. The tour concludes with a National Tour Championship. 

Top amateur players from across the country can compete with each other for the title. The golfers need a set number of points to qualify for the National Championship.

The Sunbelt Senior Golf Tour

The Sunbelt Senior Golf Tour was one of the most recognized golf tours to prepare yourself for the PGA Tour Champions or the European Senior Tour. Although no longer active, this Senior Golf Tour allowed golfers ages 49 and above to experience a competitive senior golf tournament beforehand.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Oct. 24, 2023) - Matt Schalk rode his stellar ball striking to victory at the 2022 Senior PGA Professional Championship. One year later, his goal is to combine hitting it well with improved putting as he defends his title. Schalk, PGA General Manager at Colorado National Golf Club, is one of 13 past champions in the 264-player field set to compete in the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac and supported by Golf Channel. The four-day, 72-hole event begins Thursday, Oct. 26 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. In 2022 at Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, Schalk carded a 3-over-par 75 in the final round to capture his first Leo Fraser Trophy. Rounds of 69-68-66-75, for 10-under-par 278, left him two strokes ahead of Steve Schneiter (Schneiter’s Pebblebrook, Utah Section).

“My ball striking was fantastic last year,” said Schalk. “I would say my putting wasn’t the greatest, but it was pretty strong. I made a change with my putter and going to an arm lock. I’ve been putting really well so hopefully my ball striking continues to be good and I can have a great week.”

Schalk, who won the Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship for the second consecutive year in August, now turns his attention to PGA Golf Club, where he will be competing for the first time.  

“It’s interesting, I’m not familiar at all,” said Schalk. “I’ve never played there. It seems like everybody I talk to has played there quite often. I’ll go down there a little bit early and try to learn those courses as best as I can and hopefully they suit my game.”

In addition to the Leo Fraser Trophy, named after the 16th president of the PGA of America, players are competing for a $335,000 purse including the winner’s share of $27,000.

The top 35 finishers will be named to the Corebridge Financial PGA Team and advance into the field for the 2024 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship to be held May 23-26 at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Exemptions also in play include:

• The top five finishers gain an exemption into the final stage of the 2024 PGA Tour Champions Qualifying School - Final Stage 2023.
• The top eight finishers, including ties, will automatically qualify for the 2024 Senior PGA Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon, Sept. 26-29.

This year’s field is highlighted by 13 members from the South Florida PGA Section, including Alan Morin, a PGA Assistant Professional at The Club at Ibis in West Palm Beach who finished T-3 (7-under-par 281) in 2022.

Christy Longfield, PGA Director of Instruction at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Austin, Texas, is the lone female in the field.

Bob Sowards, PGA Director of Instruction at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio, returns to PGA Golf Club, where he has collected an estimated two dozen career victories, including the 2023 PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship, Quarter Century Championship and 2022 PGA Tournament Series Event #5.

Each player will compete on PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker and Ryder courses on Thursday and Friday before a cut to the low 90 scorers and ties. Following Saturday’s round, a second cut will be made to the low 70 scorers and ties. The third and final rounds will be contested solely on the Wanamaker course.

PGA Golf Club has hosted a variety of PGA of America events, including the 2021 PGA Professional Championship and 2003 PGA Cup, as well as numerous Senior PGA Professional Championships, National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championships, PGA WORKS Collegiate Championships, PGA Winter Championships and the PGA Tournament Series.

Conducted over 18 holes, qualifying will be held at 33 sites across the United States between May 10 and June 5.  The U.S. Senior Open was introduced 44 years ago in 1980, stands as one of the five major championships in senior golf. It is recognized as a major championship by the PGA Tour Champions and the European Senior Tour.

Initially, the lower age limit was 55 in 1980, but it was lowered to 50 for the second edition in 1981, aligning with the standard age limit for men's senior professional golf tournaments. While the event is technically open to amateurs with an index of 2.4 or below, it has been predominantly dominated by professionals. 

Each year, double-digit numbers of amateurs advance through the 18-hole qualifying, but there are usually just a couple left standing when the 36-hole cut is made. We recently took a look at the reasons why .

As of 2023, professional players have won all the championships.

Following the tradition of other USGA championships, it has been hosted on numerous highly-ranked courses across the United States.

Brian Gaffney, amateur Michael Brown, and Jason Caron all shot 1-over 72 and advanced in a 5-for-3 playoff over Gregory Bisconti and amateur Patrick Herwig. Cotten earned the first alternate, and amateur Michael Arasin earned the second alternate spot.  Qualifiers: Scott Cornette (a) (Montgomery, Ala.) 66; Jon Olson (a) (Niceville, Fla.) 68. FULL RESULTS Indiana Country Club, Indiana, Penn.  David Smith was the lone player to shoot under par, finishing 1-under 70 and winning medalist honors by one shot. Gordon Vietmeier earned the second qualifying spot, while Kevin Shields and Matthew Ferguson earned the first and second alternate spots. Qualifiers: David Smith (a) (Indiana, Penn.) 70; Gordon Vietmeier (Pittsburgh, Pa.) 71. FULL RESULTS Florence Country Club, Florence, S.C. Matthew Goggin ran away from the field, shooting an impressive 7-under 63 with nine birdies and winning the qualifier by five shots. Jeff Williams defeated Scott Hunter in a 2-for-1 playoff to earn the final qualifying spot. Hunter is the first alternate, and Jeff O’Brien defeated Steve Larick in a playoff to earn the second alternate.    Qualifiers: Mathew Goggin (Australia) 63; Jeff Williams (Narcoossee, Fla.) 68. FULL RESULTS The Bears Club, Jupiter, Fla.  71 was the round to beat at The Bear’s Club, with a 4-for-2 playoff happening to book both of the qualifying spots. Mark Brown and Rod Perry finished as co-medalists and advanced, while Jesus Rivas finished as the first alternate, and Jerry Springer (not that one) finished as the second alternate. Two amateurs moved on to the U.S. Senior Open, with Tim Hogarth and David Schnider earning the two qualifying spots. Hogarth finished as the medalist after a round of 2-under 69, and Schnider advanced in a 4-for-1 playoff after shooting 1-under 70. John Hong and David Ujihara are the two alternates. Stuart Smith was the long golfer to shoot under-par, finishing 1-under 71 and earning medalist honors by one shot. Jason Schmuhl shot even-par 72 to earn the second qualifying spot. Amateurs Ron Ewing and Mark Maguire are the first and second alternates.

Koch won the 223 Payne Stewart Award.  Amateur Michael Kelley is the first alternate, and Sean Whiffin is the second alternate after winning a 3-for-1 playoff.  Qualifiers: Gene Walter (Deer Island, Fla.) 68; Gary Koch (Tampa, Fla.) 68. Javier Quevedo shot 2-under 68 and earned the lone qualifying spot as the medalist after making three birdies in his last five holes and making a birdie on No. 18 to earn a spot in a 3-for-1 playoff, where he advanced. Kent Jones and Stuart Hendley earned the first and second alternate spots.  Qualifiers: Javier Quevedo (Mexico) 68. FULL RESULTS Enagic Golf Club at Eastlake, Chula Vista, Calif.  Mike Mitchell and Chris Riley finished three shots clear of the rest of the field to earn the two available qualifying spots. Mitchell and Riley shot 3-under 69 at Enagic Golf Club. Tim Matthews and amateur Kory Frost earned the two alternate spots in a 4-for-2 playoff.  Qualifiers: Mike Mitchell (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) 69; Chris Riley (San Diego, Calif.) 69. FULL RESULTS   River Landing, Wallace, N.C. Chris Hockaday bounced back from an early bogey to make five birdies in his last 12 holes to shoot 4-under 68 to earn medalist honors. Monday, May 20 San Luis Obispo Country Club, San Luis Obispo, Calif.  Tommy Masters was the lone player in the field to shoot under par, carding a 3-under 69 and recording five birdies and an eagle to earn medalist honors. David Berganio Jr. defeated John Burckle in a playoff to earn the second and final qualifying spot. Burckle is the first alternate, and Casey Reamer is the second alternate after advancing in a 5-for-1 playoff.  Qualifiers : Tommy Masters (Fresno, Calif.) 69; David Berganio Jr. (Granada Hills, Calif.) 73. FULL RESULTS Worthington Hills Country Club, Worthington, Ohio Dan Gage shot an impressive bogey-free 6-under 65 to earn medalist honors by three shots, while amateur Brad Steven shot 3-under 68 to earn the second and qualifying spot. Thursday, May 16 Oakbrook Country Club, Lakewood, Wash.  Jeff Coston was the lone golfer to shoot under par at the Lakewood qualifier, finishing 1-under 70 and one shot better than Steven Dorigo. Dorigo survived a 2-for-1 playoff over David Christenson for the second qualifying spot. Christenson and Tony Robydek is the first and second alternates.  Qualifiers: Jeff Coston (Blaine, Wash.) 70; Steven Dorigo (Citrus Heights, Calif.) 71. Qualifying sites for the 44th U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be held at Newport (R.I.) Country Club, from June 27-30, have been announced by the USGA. Newport, one of the five founding clubs of the USGA, is hosting its first Senior Open and fifth USGA championship.

Conducted over 18 holes, qualifying will be held at 33 sites across the United States between May 13 and June 5. Online entry applications are available now and the registration process will continue through Wednesday, May 1, at 5 p.m. EDT ( champ-admin.usga.org ).

“The USGA is excited to bring senior golf’s most prestigious championship to Rhode Island for the first time and to Newport Country Club where the Association hosted its inaugural championship in 1895,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “Allied Golf Associations will be instrumental in conducting the qualifying process, which represents many of the USGA’s core values. Thousands of eligible senior golfers will have the opportunity to earn a place in the field and compete for the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the champion.”

Those players who are exempt from qualifying and have already filed entries include 2023 champion Bernhard Langer, who won with a 72-hole score of 7-under-par 277 at SentryWorld, in Stevens Point, Wis. U.S. Senior Open champions Fred Funk (2009), Colin Montgomerie (2014), Kenny Perry (2013, 2017), Gene Sauers (2016), David Toms (2018) and Padraig Harrington (2022) have also entered, along with U.S. Open champions Retief Goosen (2001, 2004) and Michael Campbell (2005).

One of the U.S. Senior Open qualifiers will be held at The Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course, in Hot Springs, Va. The club will host qualifying for the 10th consecutive time and 20th overall. It has been the site of eight USGA championships, including the 1967 U.S. Women’s Open and 1988 U.S. Amateur. Sam Snead, a four-time U.S. Open runner-up and World Golf Hall of Famer, was The Homestead’s golf professional for nearly six decades.

Worthington Hills Country Club, in Columbus, Ohio, and Wynlakes Golf and Country Club, in Montgomery, Ala., will each host qualifying for the 10th time. Dave Cunningham was medalist with a 67 at Worthington Hills last year. He would tie for 27th in last year’s U.S. Senior Open.

For the ninth time since 1991, Florence (S.C.), Country Club, is a Senior Open qualifying host. Goose Creek Golf Club, in Jurupa Valley, Calif., and Indiana (Pa.) Country Club will be qualifying sites for the eighth and seventh times, respectively.

California has the most qualifying sites with five. Four U.S. Senior Open qualifiers are scheduled in Florida, while Texas will host three qualifiers. There are qualifying sites in 22 states. Franklin (Mass.) Country Club, located 60 miles north of Newport, will host a U.S. Senior Open qualifier on Tuesday, May 21. The Broadmoor, in Colorado Springs, Colo., will conclude qualifying on Wednesday, June 5. The club’s East Course is the site of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open.

Don Pooley (2002) is the lone player to win the U.S. Senior Open after advancing through qualifying. In 2023, 18 golfers who played in a qualifier made the 36-hole cut at SentryWorld.

The 2024 U.S. Senior Open will be the 10th USGA championship contested in Rhode Island. To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 2.4 or be a professional, and be 50 years of age at the start of championship proper.

Four U.S. Senior Opens have been held in New England, including 2017 when the championship was played at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass. Kenny Perry posted a two-stroke victory over Kirk Triplett to claim his second Senior Open title.

A college golf atmosphere for seniors: u.s. senior challenge at kingsmill offers something different, share this article.

At the end of May, team golf got its annual moment in the spotlight as the NCAA men’s and women’s national championships were broadcast over two weeks on Golf Channel. Mike Quinlan, executive director of the U.S. Senior Challenge, wants to note the connection between those tournaments and what’s about to happen at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, next week.

“What we’re trying to model now is this is exactly like a college tournament, just like everybody watched on TV where you have teams playing against each other and also at the same time, you’re vying to be the individual champion of the tournament,” Quinlan said.

Outside of two-man best-ball tournaments, the U.S. Senior Challenge, to be played June 4-6, is one of very few opportunities a senior amateur has to compete in a national team competition. State teams are made up of four individuals, with the best three scores counting toward the team total in each of three rounds. While one team champion is crowned, individual champions will be named in each of four age divisions: senior, super senior, legends and super legends. World Amateur Golf Ranking points are also awarded.

The format, Quinlan said, is exactly what makes the U.S. Senior Challenge such an interesting draw for competitive senior amateurs.

“My belief is that this event is super unique,” he said. “You can sort of relive your college glory days and travel with three other guys on your team and have a really fun week, because even if you did really poorly one day, you’re always wanting to be part of that team score, to have one of the low three scores.”

Part of the reason for the void in amateur team golf on the national level has to do with the discontinuation of the U.S. Golf Association’s State Team Championship in 2017. That tournament, which featured three-person teams from each state, however, was not just for seniors.

The U.S. Senior Challenge dates to the mid-1980s but has matured into its current format. The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association, in cooperation with the U.S. Senior Challenge Board of Directors and Golfweek , handles tournament operations, and the event is elevated by a dedicated USGA Boatwright Intern from the SCAGA.

Quinlan’s involvement increased in 2016, when former executive director Jim Bianco was looking to pass the torch. Quinlan, who had been heavily involved in the board of the directors, picked it up. The Albuquerque, New Mexico, resident helped bring in the SCAGA, his local state golf association.

“When we took over, Jim actually had two tournaments, he had the team and the individual event,” Quinlan said. “When we took it over, we combined the two into the college-kind of format because we really didn’t have an interest, No. 1, in running two events and No. 2, there were so many individual events that the unique part of this is that college-kind of format where you’re both playing as a team and individuals.”

Teams are formed by a state captain representing participating states (participation, Quinlan notes, varies from year to year depending on where the tournament is played geographically). Some state captains recruit their state’s top players – for example, Quinlan remembers when Arkansas won the team title in 2019 and the state team included brothers Stan Lee and Louis Lee, who had both won U.S. Senior Amateur titles, in 2007 and 2011, respectively.

Sometimes, however, it becomes more of a buddies’ trip. In other cases, teams may not meet until they show up for the practice round. That’s because individuals who are not part of their state’s team can also compete in the tournament, and organizers work to group them into teams from the same state, when possible, or regionally. In this year’s field, almost a third of the 19 teams were formulated that way.

“The longtime captains, they really understand the format well and they’re probably more modeled together as a team versus the people who show up on the first tee and meet for the first time,” Quinlan said.

Quinlan, who captains a New Mexico team and will also play in the event, said the largest U.S. Senior Challenge team field featured 20 teams from 20 different states. He hopes the event continues to gain momentum.

“There’s just never been something like this for seniors and I think going forward it’s a big advantage for us to have the premier team event in the United States.”

U.S. Open sectional qualifying: Golf's Longest Day yields the usual drama, surprise medalists

Nearly 600 players competed for the final 44 spots to make the u.s. open at pinehurst june 13-16.

For the second year in a row, the longest day in golf didn't spill over to another 24 hours. 

The 10 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifiers on Monday finished before midnight, with 587 players vying for the final 44 spots for Pinehurst, N.C., June 13-16. Three qualifiers, in Dallas, England and Japan, were held on May 20. 

As usual, there was no shortage of drama. 

The medalists ranged from 45-year-old Matt Kuchar at the Bear's Club in Jupiter to Illinois sophomore Jackson Buchanan at the Golf Club of Georgia and Virginia sophomore Ben James at Canoe Brook in Summit, N.J. 

And with sectionals loaded with PGA Tour winners and major champions such as Adam Scott, Jason Dufner, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Charl Schwartzel, Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson, medalists or co-medalists included the likes of Mark Hubbard, Frankie Cappan III, Zac Blair, Tim Widing, Isaiah Salinda and Justin Lower, who have yet to win on the PGA Tour. 

Another medalist, Joey Vrzich at the Pronghorn Resort in Bend, Ore., is playing on PGA Tour Americas. 

Counting the previous three sectionals, a total of 948 players competed for the last 68 spots in the 156-player field for Pinehurst.

Gagarin Cup Preview: Atlant vs. Salavat Yulaev

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
