Highest career earnings on golf’s DP World Tour

The highest career earnings on golf’s DP World Tour are €44,594,732 (£39,243,320; $47,434,525), achieved by Rory McIlroy (UK) as of 23 February 2023.

McIlroy has won 14 tournaments on the DP World Tour (formerly known as the PGA European Tour).

DP World Tour Championship Prize Money Payout

Who are the star names in the dp world tour championship.

The 15th edition of the DP World Tour Championship once again concludes the season-long Race to Dubai at the Earth Course of Jumeirah Golf Estates .

Unlike 2022, the winner of the Race to Dubai has already been confirmed – Rory McIlroy claimed the Harry Vardon trophy a week early after another successful season on the Tour for the 34-year-old that included victories in the Dubai Desert Classic and Genesis Scottish Open.

While the prize money the four-time Major winner will receive for topping the standings for the fifth time has yet to be confirmed, the victor for the last four years has picked up $2m from the Race to Dubai bonus pool of $5m.

Last year, Jon Rahm beat Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots to claim the DP World Tour Championship title for the third time. That handed him a $3m windfall from the $10m purse, and it has increased to $10.5m this year, albeit with the same amount on offer to the winner.

Perhaps unsurprisingly considering its status, the event has the largest prize fund of any DP World Tour event and $1.5m more than the other four Rolex Series events over the season.

The purse is also $2.1m more than that being offered by the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic this week, highlighting its position as one of the biggest tournaments in the calendar, even though that’s not reflected in the number of Official World Golf Ranking points available in it, which is fewer than the tournament at Sea Island .

While the winner will see a sizeable boost to his bank account, the payday for the runner-up will be considerable, too, at $1.275m.

As well as the defending champion the biggest name in the field is Rory McIlroy , and many more of the world's best players are in the 50-man field, too, including 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick , who is going in search of his third DP World Tour Championship title. and the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup winner Viktor Hovland .

Other big names include six-time DP World Tour winner Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Kim, whose most recent start saw him claim victory at the Shriners Children’s Open. Major winner Shane Lowry and his Ryder Cup teammates Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard, Tyrrell Hatton and Robert MacIntyre also play.

Some players also have their sights set on a PGA Tour card as those who finish in the top 10 of the Race to Dubai standings, not otherwise exempt, will claim 2024 PGA Tour exemptions.

In prime position to earn their PGA Tour cards are Adrian Meronk, Ryan Fox, Victor Perez, Thorbjorn Olesen, Alexander Bjork, Sami Valimaki, MacIntyre, Jorge Campillo, Ryo Hisatsune and Rasmus Hojgaard.

Where Is The DP World Tour Championship Held?

The DP World Tour Championship is held at the Greg Norman-designed Earth Course. The course, which has held the tournament since it opened in 2009, takes inspiration from the parkland courses of Europe and the USA.

How Does The DP World Tour Championship Work?

The top 50 players in the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai rankings are eligible for the season-closing DP World Tour Championship, and every one of those players is competing in the 2023 edition. Like most other DP World Tour events, the action takes place over four rounds of stroke play.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2022 DP World Tour Championship

dp world tour average earnings

By GolfDigestME.com To say Jon Rahm loves playing the DP World Tour Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates would be the understatement of understatements. The 28-year-old Spaniard had two wins and a T-4 showing in his three previous starts in the DP World Tour season finale, posting a scoring average of 67.66.

It was more of the same this week, as Rahm followed up an opening-round 70 with a 66-65-67 finish to take the tournament title for a third time, outpacing Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots. In the process, he lowered that career scoring average to 67.5.

It was Rahm’s ninth career DP World Tour victory and fifth win in the tour’s elevated Rolex Series events. With the triumph, Rahm claimed the $3 million first-place prize money payout from the overall purse of $10 million. He also saw his career earnings on the DP World Tour rise to €21,834,859.52, the 19th player in tour history to break the €20 million mark.

There was another winner on Sunday as well as Rory McIlroy, while finishing four strokes back of Rahm in solo fourth place, earned the DP World Tour’s Harry Vardon Trophy as the season-long points title winner. It’s the third time McIlroy has won the honor, but the first in a season in which he also won the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title.

Possible deal between PGA Tour and LIV golf not stopping players from slinging insults

dp world tour average earnings

Remember when the PGA Tour and backers of LIV Golf were all smiles, announcing their peace treaty, how they were able to put aside their differences, no matter how hypocritical?

Forget an olive branch, the entire tree was extended.

That harmony may still exist between PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan , governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which finances LIV Golf. But some of the members on both sides have not gotten the memo.

In the past week, a member of the DP World Tour trolled an LIV golfer and an LIV golfer tried to explain why it's harder to win an LIV event than win on the PGA Tour.

And we all know of at least one LIV golfer who is willing to bet these guys will continue to defend their turf regardless of whether this framework of an agreement between the PGA and DP World tours and the PIF is finalized.

LIV's Lee Westwood chose the wrong week to pick a fight on social media. The Englishman posted a laughing-face emoji over the latest Official World Golf Ranking … after he shot 20-over and finished in last place in the 48-man field at Bedminster.

Perhaps his issue was with Cam Smith dropping one spot to No. 9 after winning at Bedminster, which means nothing since the OWGR does not recognize LIV. It certainly cannot be over his No. 454 ranking during a season in which he's finished in the bottom half of the field in all but two LIV events.

More: Phil Mickelson has gambled more than $1 billion, attempted to bet on Ryder Cup, according to book

Westwood earned $120,000 Sunday for managing to stay within 32 shots of Smith, which got the attention of Eddie Pepperell, who plays on the DP World Tour.

Pepperell responded to Westwood mocking the OWGR:

“I’ll tell you what’s a joke Lee; you earning 3X the average annual UK salary in one week for shooting +20 over 3 rounds.”

Westwood responded by citing the ways the PGA Tour has increased compensation through the TGL and Player Impact Program. But Pepperell continued to hammer his fellow Englishman.

“It’s all laughable. From you earning £100k last week for playing like a turnip to the TGL/PIP. Pro golf has degraded itself to being just about the money. Maybe it always has been and I’m naive, but it isn’t doing much to improve the sport and genuinely ‘grow the game.’”

Grow the game was one of the talking points handed to LIV golfers when they joined the league. But not sure growing turnips was part of the instruction.

Westwood ended by saying Pepperell was a "nodding donkey" during a private meeting last year between players and DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley about the future of the game.

"Me and @IanJamesPoulter asked all the questions at the Players meeting at Wentworth and you sat right in front of me bowing your head like a nodding donkey ..."

All about the money

Harold Varner III has been honest from the start about his decision to join LIV Golf. Varner never sugarcoated LIV's lure and why his peers joined the startup league. And it had nothing to do with growing the game or spending more time with family.

LIV writes checks for $25 million for each event, with the individual winner pocketing $4 million.

This is all about the money

"Man, we didn’t come here to grow the game,” Varner told Golfweek's Adam Woodard last week, repeating his stance from the start. "We came here to make money and have fun and that’s what we’re doing, so just say that’s what we’re doing."

Refreshing. But he should have stopped there.

Varner then added he believes "it’s harder to win $4 million (at an LIV event) than it is to win a PGA Tour event.

"When you get in contention out here, it’s like, (expletive), that’s life-changing money. And I play for money," he continued.

But here's the problem, it's not just the winner who cashes checked signed by the Saudis. The runner-up is paid $2.25 million and on down the line to the last guy in the no-cut field who makes $120,000.

Even if he shoots 20-over.

Varner's only win in 12 years on the PGA Tour and LIV was in May outside Washington, D.C. He held off Jupiter's Branden Grace by one shot.

If he finished second and took home $2.25 million instead of $4 million, Varner would be sitting on about $6.1 million in prize money this season (with three events left) instead of the $7.85 million he's earned.

Every golfer has moments that are "harder" than others or feels pressure when winning is on the line. That is true of every sport.

But for the vast majority that has nothing to do with money, especially those good enough to make a very comfortable living from their sport.

And especially when playing on the circuit with 48-man, no-cut fields knowing if you finish in the top four you'll make more than $1 million (more than half a million in the top 11), or if you shoot 20-over and place dead last you are rewarded with a check for $120,000.

Nor does money come into play while in contention on the 72nd hole of a PGA Tour event, which for most only means adding to the tens of millions, and for many hundreds of millions, earned in their careers.

If Varner believes it was "harder" holding off Grace because it would have meant making a million or two instead of four, and that his earnings playing golf already have not been "life-changing," then the 32-year-old needs a reality check.

2024 RBC Canadian Open prize money payouts for each PGA Tour player at Hamilton Golf & Country Club

H AMILTON, Ontario — Rookie Robert MacIntyre claimed his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open. He did so with his father, Dougie, serving as the emergency caddie this week. It was a cool story for the two-time DP World Tour winner and member of the winning European Ryder Cup team in Rome.

But it also comes with a sweet seven-figure check. MacIntyre took home $1.692 million from a purse of $9.4 million. Not bad for a week's work and for the 27-year-old pride of Oban, Scotland. In fact, he more than doubled his earnings for his previous 15 starts in which he had banked $1,133,146.

DP World Tour, R&A and PGA Tour create new global pathway for best amateur players

2152932741

Andrew Redington

The DP World Tour, R&A and PGA Tour announced a new joint venture Tuesday that will create another professional avenue for the best male amateur players.

The initiative, called the Global Amateur Pathway, will reward the top non-collegiate competitors with status on the DP World Tour and partner tours around the world. The highest ranked player (who doesn’t play NCAA Division I college golf) in the World Amateur Golf Ranking will receive a tour card for the former European Tour the following season, while further exemptions will be rewarded to the European Challenge Tour. The ranking is designed to identify and rank a subset of elite male amateur players competing in eligible tournaments based on their average performance in those tournaments.

Aside from the non-NCAA competitor stipulation, other criteria include being at least 20 years old and ranked inside the top 200 of the WAGR.

The Global Amateur Pathway will work in conjunction with the PGA Tour University ranking, which provides membership on PGA Tour-sanctioned circuits to the top Division-I college golfers at the end of the NCAA Championship. It was the PGA Tour U platform that allowed European star Ludvig Aberg the chance to compete on the PGA Tour immediately following the completion of his collegiate career in 2023.

These directives are seen as a response to LIV Golf, which has granted guaranteed millions to promising amateurs to sign with the fledgling Saudi-backed league.

“This initiative is the perfect example of the benefits that come from the Strategic Alliances and partnerships that we have forged across the game of golf,” said DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings in a press release. “The very best amateur players now have similar opportunities to their professional counterparts, with clear pathways across the globe to ultimately compete at the pinnacle of the game.”

According to the DP World Tour, several current professionals that would have benefited from the Global Amateur Pathway include Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood and Min Woo Lee.

The qualification period for the inaugural ranking ends this October.

Produced a number of notable amateur performances, including finishing runner-up at the 2008 Amateur Championship and playing in the 2009 Walker Cup before turning professional in 2010.

Became the youngest player to win the Challenge Tour Rankings in 2011, aged 20 and 290 days, and his breakthrough DP World Tour victory came in the 2013 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Was crowned European Number One in 2017 after a stellar season that was kick-started by victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA, followed by a superb second place at the WGC-Mexico Championship, a first Rolex Series win at the Open de France and a fourth place finish at the U.S. Open. A total of ten top tens helped him top the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex, beating Justin Rose to the crown.

Followed that season up by defending his Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship title in 2018, virtually securing his place at The Ryder Cup in Paris, just a week after playing on the winning European team at the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM.

Made a memorable Ryder Cup debut at Le Golf National, winning four points out of five - all four coming alongside his friend and playing partner Francesco Molinari in the opening two days - en route to a memorable victory for Team Europe.

Made history at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills when his seven under par 63 equalled the record for the lowest round at a U.S. Open and the lowest score on the final day of a Major Championship.

Won his second Rolex Series event and his fifth DP World Tour title at the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player, starting the final round six shots off the lead before beating Marcus Kinhult in a play-off. A runner-up finish the following week at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai meant he finished second in the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex, behind Jon Rahm.

Finished inside the top five on the Race to Dubai Rankings for the fourth year in a row in 2020 in a season which included runner up results at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open.

Represented Team Europe at the Ryder Cup for a second time in 2021 at Whistling Straits.

Returned to the winner's circle in 2022 at his long-awaited defence of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, winning his sixth DP World Tour title after a thrilling final day battle with Ryan Fox at Sun City.

Captained Great Britain & Ireland at the inaugural Hero Cup in 2023.

Made his third Ryder Cup appearance at Marco Simone later that year, and secured the winning moment for Team Europe as he went 2Up with two to play against Rickie Fowler in the Sunday singles, guaranteeing the half point required for Europe to regain the Cup. He would beat Fowler 3&1 and returned three points from four matches.

Started 2024 in fine form, winning the inaugural Dubai Invitational by one stroke from Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy and South Africa's Thriston Lawrence, securing his seventh DP World Tour victory.
