Sapporo is the largest city on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, home to the world-renowned Sapporo Beer and February’s Sapporo Snow Festival. Sapporo is the largest city on the island of Hokkaido, and the fifth largest in Japan. First settled by the indigenous Ainu people, the city was fully developed by Emperor Meiji in 1868 into the modern city it is today. Many of the historic elements of Hokkaido are preserved in the city, especially in the Historic Village, which has sections dedicated to different eras of history. Ever since Sapporo hosted Asia’s first Winter Olympics in 1972, the ski resorts on the city’s outskirts beckon to winter sports enthusiasts who yearn to brave an Olympic-level slope. Sapporo beer is one of the oldest in the country, and has been made in breweries there since 1877. Many come to the brewery to drink at the Beer Garden, or to visit the Beer Museum and hear of the history of Japanese beer within a Meiji-era brewery. Shiroi Koibito Park is a theme park about sweets sponsored by Ishiya, a local chocolate company. The Shiroi Koibito cookie is highly sought after as a souvenir from Hokkaido. Sapporo becomes a winter wonderland every February during the Sapporo Snow Festival, attracting millions of visitors from around the world. The festival is centered around three main sites in the city including the main thoroughfare at Odori Park, and the large entertainment district in Susukino. What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 514 REVIEWS

We gained great appreciation for the culture and history of Japan through the sites we visited. The transportation was comfortable and convenient, and our guide, Trend, was outstanding, knowledgeable and entertaining. The accommodations were terrific, and it was so convenient to have two meals included each day. We enjoyed every aspect of the tour and we'd highly recommend it to others!

This tour was amazing with everything so well organized. The transportation was comfortable, accommodation was great (pretty much got 4-star hotels) and all the important touristy places were covered. It'd be hard for anyone to do the same itinerary on their own for sure. My fav. aspect of the tour is that it was not rushed and had ample time at each of the spots making it more enjoyable. Most importantly, our guide TREND was brilliant. She did an excellent job in taking care of the group, keeping it entertaining and educative. She always ensured we were all comfortable everywhere and especially in the restaurants where the menu was hard to understand given I had dietary restrictions leaving few choices. I'd recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for the highlights of Japan.

We had a wonderful tour.

We had a trip of a lifetime! Our guide Joyce and driver, Yokomi-san were very professional and timely. We will miss them! They were very friendly and ensured our children (11 and 14) had an incredible experience! Joyce was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information about the sites we were seeing, made sure we had our tickets and did not lose anyone. We had plenty of time at each attraction to walk around, get snacks and use facilities - we never felt rushed or that we were wasting time. Sadly, there was too many clouds at Hakone to see anything. We had spent a lot of time riding to get there and saw nothing, so we ate the black egg and took photos, which was still memorable. The onsen hotel is the most beautiful hotel ever! We enjoyed using the family onsen and the kaiseki dinner.

Trend was an exceptional tour host! She was attentive to every traveler and gave us such helpful information, both historical and cultural.

Lots of tips, inspiration and information written by our local hosts with the help of our editor.

Latest reviews from our guests

Ryuki had great ideas for the tour. He showed us areas very local areas and introduced us to foods unique to Sapporo. He was also great at conversation. We learned so much from him. We would book a tour with Ryuki again.

Priscilla C

Goal was to go on a food trip and eat and discover lots of good food, and this tour helped us a lot. Found lots of local hidden gems and popular but delicious places. Will be using city unscripted/get your guide again.

emilio was very knowledgeable about the city. He offered many suggestions as to where to go and what to do and how to go about doing them. he has helped me plan out what i will be doing for my next trip and time in Sapporo. he was flexible in the languages he spoke and was open to any option i felt most comfortable. 10/10

We initially had an afternoon start time but when we had more time in the day she was flexible to meet us earlier. She gave us a good mix of must sees in the city, gave us the option to check out historical structures, and showed us key landscape features! Zarina knows about Sapporo's history in many aspects as well as what's popular.

What people love about sapporo tours.

Very busy days - 12 hours most days.
Ray, our tour guide was fantastic. Everything was planned to perfection. He ensured all tour members were taken care of with multiple languages to deal with as well. A couple of notes. We were told to look for aTour-Radar/Europamundo sign on arrival in Tokyo for a car ride to the first hotel. After phone calls it was determined to have been a Green- Tomato sign were to look for. This caused another couple to wait nearly an hour. Also the hotel in Hokadate was a bit of a disappointment. All other accommodations were excellent. This was the first tour we have been on as we normally go out on our own. Because of Ray we would really consider doing this again. He deserves nothing but praise and a raise in his salary.
Great food, beautiful landscapes, wonderful onsen resorts.

One of the last areas of Japan to be colonised, it once was the domain of the “Ainu", an indigenous tribe with a distinct culture, whose history is on display in one of the city’s museums today. Adorned by parks and forests, complete with wildlife, it is a colourful, progressive, and energetic city that attracts the adventurous traveller. The legacy of Sapporo's vivid past is perceivable through various historical buildings. Historic landmarks include the former Hokkaidō government office building, the Sapporo Clock Tower, the Hokkaidō Shrine and the Sapporo TV Tower. Having hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics and as venue for the Sapporo Snow Festival, the city is also famous for winter sports. However, food and arts lovers will enjoy themselves here as well. Sapporo Brewery and Shiroi Koibito Park, the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, and Sapporo Artpark are popular sights, too.

Hokkaido University Botanical Gardens

Sapporo's proximity to the sea and its open plains provide the city with an abundance of fresh seafood, vegetables, and dairy products. The Susukino district, brimming over with restaurants, is alive with flavour. Here you will find fine examples of local delicacies, including ramen, sushi, crab, Uni (sea urchin), and Genghis Khan (lamb barbecue).

Kaniya Sapporo Crab House

Bars & Nightlife

For bars, head for Susukino: it is safe, well-lit, and bright with neon lights. Being the famous beer capital of Japan, Sapporo is never short of a pint; be sure to visit a traditional pub known locally as izakaya. South of Odori Park is Susukino, the hub for entertainment. This is an area dense with bars, hostess bars, and nightclubs.

Susukino District

Sapporo provides a great number of stores, offering everything from fashion boutiques with well-known Western brands to traditional cotton or silk kimonos. Not only the city offers a number of large underground malls such as the popular Tanuki Koji Shopping Arcade, but also department stores like Parco with ten floors of shopping—and don't forget the small local shops selling souvenirs. Other popular products in Hokkaido besides kimonos are wood carvings, produced often by the Ainus, available in the boutiques of Sapporo as well as in the gift shops of hotels and museums.

We have started a new series on Visit Sapporo called “People of Sapporo”

Things to do.

Sapporo is Japan’s fifth biggest city, and the largest north of Tokyo. Enjoy exquisite cuisine created from the blessings of nature, plentiful shopping, and myriad artistic and cultural experiences together with the vibrant nightlife of one of Japan’s leading entertainment districts. The great outdoors also lies within easy reach, and there is no shortage of incredible views and thrilling outdoor activities.

Sapporo has a population of about two million people and receives some five meters of powder snow each winter, making it one of very few large cities in the world to enjoy such abundant snowfall. The mountains that serve as the backdrop to the Sapporo skyline lie right on the city’s doorstep and you can be at one of Sapporo’s six powder slopes in less than an hour, with enough variety to satisfy even the most avid rider. For après-ski, all you have to do is head to the heart of the city to experience the real thrill of an urban ski destination, with dining, shopping, nightlife, and world-famous events such as the Sapporo Snow Festival.

Sapporo is a metropolis in the midst of nature. Home to forests designated as natural monuments of Japan, it is also dotted with parks where you can feel rejuvenated as you gaze upon the beauty of the flowers and trees throughout the seasons. The forests and lakes of the area’s national parks are also just a couple of hours away. Feel energized in the great outdoors as you enjoy activities from hiking to canoeing. Surrounded by lush nature as far as the eye can see, you may never want to leave.

ART & CULTURE

Much like the city itself, Sapporo’s vibrant art scene is a seamless fusion of the urban and the natural, with sculptures and other works by renowned artists from Japan and beyond intermingled with the city’s lush greenery. Sapporo also has a distinctive history within Japan as a city that has pioneered the adoption of Western technologies since the latter half of the 19th century and features a distinctive townscape with a harmonious blend of Western- and Japanese-style architecture.

Surrounded by three ocean currents, Hokkaido is a treasure trove of incredible seafood. The vast expanses of the island are also a thriving hotbed of dairy farming and other agriculture, ideal for growing the very best local produce. As the capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo is the culinary center where all of these fresh ingredients come together. Indulge your taste buds with a fascinating lineup of seafood, world-class dining, and soul food beloved by locals, including miso ramen and the local lamb barbecue dish Genghis Kan.

HOT SPRINGS

While most Japanese hot springs are located some distance out of town, Sapporo boasts a stunning hot spring resort within its city limits. About an hour drive from downtown, Jozankei Onsen lies among the abundant nature of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Soaking in a natural hot spring while taking in the beauty of the valley is a journey in relaxation for body and mind. Beyond hot springs, visitors to Jozankei can also try canoeing and a range of other outdoor activities.

Discover the real Sapporo through the stories of local people and visitors from near and far.

Itineraries

Sapporo is a city with many different faces. Few cities blend urban streetscapes with abundant nature quite as seamlessly as this city does. Here are some ideas to enjoy Sapporo your way.

RECOMMENDED

Every visit in Sapporo is unique, and the wonders of the city transform with the seasons. Find out how to make the most of the moment with these recommendations.

Flying is the most convenient way to get to Sapporo. New Chitose Airport, the city’s main airport, is connected to Japan’s major transport hubs and also offers direct international flights. Sapporo lies at the heart of Hokkaido and provides easy access to other major destinations across the island. Abundant transport ranging from railways to buses, subway lines, trams, and taxis gives you the freedom to plan your trip your way.

Sapporo 1 day tour (8 hours).

In Hokkaido’s central city Sapporo, there are plenty of places where you can enjoy sightseeing and nature within a short distance from the city. Therefore, it is more efficient to travel by charter vehicle or charter bus rather than public transport. In winter, the weather is extremely cold and there are a lot of snow, so it is safer to leave the driving up to the driver of the charter vehicle.

The Clock Tower is a famous tourist attraction and it is also well known as the symbol of Sapporo. It has been preserved as an important cultural asset of Japan, and exhibits documents related to the development of Hokkaido. It is also a great location for memorial photos.

The Former Hokkaido Government Office building is an American-style neo-baroque architecture and is listed as one of the important cultural assets of the country. With its modern appearance of red bricks, the building is still widely loved by locals. The archives and historical documents are exhibited inside the building, so visitors can gain some knowledge about Hokkaido’s history. For lunch, you have lots to choose from, including Hokkaido’s famous soup curry, ramen and seafood. (Hokkaido is famous for its great food.)

In the afternoon, we will move onto Sapporo Beer Museum, the only beer museum in Japan. You can find out all about the brewing process of the popular Sapporo beer and its history. You can also taste some of the beer at a fee. If you hire one of our charter vehicles, you have no need to worry about drinking the beer as you don’t need to drive. In the premises, there are many restaurants and shops, including some that serve Hokkaido’s famous dish Jingisukan. The final stop on this tour is Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill, another tourist attraction with magnificent scenery. On the hillside you get a great view of the mountains and it overlooks a sheep farm. This location is famous for the statue of American educator Dr. William S. Clark, who is well known as the frontier spirit of Hokkaido. Why not take a photo with the statue while doing the same pose?

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

Hokkaido Tour Guide - Akira M.

Hi, I'm Akira, please call me Aki. I am a Hokkaido native, born and growing up near Hakodate and National Government licensed guide interpreter. I used to be an elementary school teacher until retirement. I've been to the U.S twice to study the American educational system sent by Hokkaido board of education. I also acted as a volunteer guide in Hakodate city for more than ten years because as a civil servant, moonlighting was prohibited by the authority. After retirement, I started working as a professional tour guide mainly in Hokkaido, but because of the Pandemic, I soon lost my job. So I decided to enter graduate school of Hokkaido University where I studied Japanese modern history. So I am well-versed in Japanese history and culture. I have also learned about tourist spots around Sapporo. I have shown around foreign guests in Hakodate and Sapporo many times. I'd like to promote international friendly relations by entertaining foreign guests by showing them around beautiful tourist destinations in Sapporo because I like to communicate with foreign people. When you have a chance to visit Sapporo, Please contact me and join my tour. I know every corner of Sapporo and its hidden history. I look forward to spending a wonderful time with you. “ A wonderful guide for Hokkaido ”

We had a wonderful time with Kumiko for two days. She showed us around in Sapporo for one day and in Otaru for another day. We not only enjoyed her knowledge about both cities and Hokkaido, but also the conversation and her energetic and joyful personality. She hikes and skies too and can guide you from cities to the mountains in four seasons!

Exploring Sapporo City attractions - 1

Thank you for your review! Best Kumiko

“ Great Tour ”

We had a great day exploring Sapporo. Miyuki was lovely to spend the day with. Unfortunately it was a dreary day, which has no bearing on Miyuki as a guide. She did great pivoting and making the best out of a cold and rainy day. It had been warmer but there was a cold snap. We went into some buildings most people choose to just look at from the outside and snap pictures. It was a chance to warm up for the next leg of the trip. I think you are doing yourself a disservice choosing to not go in at the clock tower. If you are from the USA, yes it is modeled after buildings in Boston. But it you enjoy history, Miyuki knows a lot and while it looks like a Boston building it is in Sapporo, Japan. We were also thankful for her knowledge of all the underground walkways and subways. That was a welcome reprieve from the wind. Where we stopped for lunch was delicious. She was also prepared with a map and told us a few things while we waited for our food. It was a great day. Highly recommend. Especially if you only have a short time. I definitely want to go back,

The Best of Sapporo 8 hours Full-day tour - 1

Dear Karen san Thank you for the great review. And thank you for reading all the explanation carefully in Clock Tower and Former Hokkaido Government Building. There are more places you can enjoy in each season. I hope you have another opportunity to come back to Hokkaido. Regards, Miyuki

“ A Wonderful Day ”

I cannot recommend Myuki highly enough. We saw sights of Sapporo that we would never have found on our own and certainly not in one day. Miyuki was very flexible in her approach and we were not locked in to a rigid itinerary. She adjusted her walking pace to accommodate my husband who is slower due to a back injury and provided us with plenty of information on what we were seeing. A highlight for us all was the shrine and the park surrounding it. This tour made it clear that you see and learn much more with a local guide.

Lynn R.

Dear Lynn san Thank you for having me as a guide. I am glad you enjoyed one-day tour in Sapporo. I also enjoyed with you and your wonderful family. Many thank you, Miyuki

The state of tourism and hospitality 2024

Tourism and hospitality are on a journey of disruption. Shifting source markets and destinations, growing demand for experiential and luxury travel, and innovative business strategies are all combining to dramatically alter the industry landscape. Given this momentous change, it’s important for stakeholders to consider and strategize on four major themes:

  • The bulk of travel is close to home. Although international travel might draw headlines, stakeholders shouldn’t neglect the big opportunities in their backyards. Domestic travel still represents the bulk of travel spending, and intraregional tourism is on the rise.
  • Consumers increasingly prioritize travel—when it’s on their own terms. Interest in travel is booming, but travelers are no longer content with a one-size-fits-all experience. Individual personalization might not always be practical, but savvy industry players can use segmentation and hypothesis-driven testing to improve their value propositions. Those that fail to articulate target customer segments and adapt their offerings accordingly risk getting left behind.
  • The face of luxury travel is changing. Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than any other travel segment today—particularly in Asia. It’s crucial to understand that luxury travelers don’t make up a monolith. Segmenting by age, nationality, and net worth can reveal varied and evolving preferences and behaviors.
  • As tourism grows, destinations will need to prepare to mitigate overcrowding. Destinations need to be ready to handle the large tourist flows of tomorrow. Now is the time for stakeholders to plan, develop, and invest in mitigation strategies. Equipped with accurate assessments of carrying capacities and enhanced abilities to gather and analyze data, destinations can improve their transportation and infrastructure, build tourism-ready workforces, and preserve their natural and cultural heritages.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

Global travel is back and buzzing. The amount of travel fell by 75 percent in 2020; however, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. More regional trips, an emerging population of new travelers, and a fresh set of destinations are powering steady spending in tourism.

There’s no doubt that people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go?

We share a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030.

The way we travel now

Which trends are shaping traveler sentiment now? What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? How much are they willing to spend on their trips? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

To gauge what’s on the minds of present-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them. The findings reveal disparate desires, generational divides, and a newly emerging set of traveler archetypes.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other segment. This growth is being powered in part by a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options. The increase is also a result of rising wealth levels in Asia.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers around the globe about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Some widely held notions about luxury travelers—such as how much money they have, how old they are, and where they come from—could be due for reexamination.

Destination readiness: Preparing for the tourist flows of tomorrow

As global tourism grows, it will be crucial for destinations to be ready. How can the tourism ecosystem prepare to host unprecedented volumes of visitors while managing the challenges that can accompany this success? A large flow of tourists, if not carefully channeled, can encumber infrastructure, harm natural and cultural attractions, and frustrate locals and visitors alike.

Now is the time for tourism stakeholders to combine their thinking and resources to look for better ways to handle the visitor flows of today while properly preparing themselves for the visitor flows of tomorrow. We offer a diagnostic that destinations can use to spot early-warning signs about tourism concentration, along with suggestions for funding mechanisms and strategies to help maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.

Six trends shaping new business models in tourism and hospitality

As destinations and source markets have transformed over the past decade, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved, too. Accommodation, home sharing, cruises, and theme parks are among the sectors in which new approaches could present new opportunities. Stakeholders gearing up for new challenges should look for business model innovations that will help sustain their hard-won growth—and profits.

Unbundling offerings, cross-selling distinctive experiences, and embracing data-powered strategies can all be winning moves. A series of insight-driven charts reveal significant trends and an outlook on the future.
