Play Any Webpage’s Audio In the Background Using Safari in iOS 10

safari play music

If you are running iOS 10 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, then you can play any audio or video (including Youtube) on Safari and keep its sound playing in the background even when you exit the app. To do so all you need to do is open any audio or video streaming webpage and play the song, audio clip or video. Once it starts playing you can simply click the home button and return to the homescreen. When you are on the homescreen the audio will be playing the background while you will be able to launch any app and use it while listening to it. You can even lock your device without worrying about the audio stopping.

There’s a minor difference when it comes to playing video’s sound in the background than an audio clip. The audio clip will automatically keep on playing when you exit Safari. However in the case of a video the sound will stop. To start it you have to pull up the Control Center and then slide to access the music player screen. There you simply have to tap on the play button and the audio will start playing. You can then go on and open any app and keep enjoying the audio from that video.

This is  not a new trick and has been around since the days of iOS 9 and perhaps before that. It is good to see we can still do it in iOS 10.

How to listen to YouTube music in the background on iPhone

By Charlie Sorrel • 1:00 pm, April 16, 2020

  • Top stories

youtube on a phone

Unlike streaming music, which often keeps playing when you switch away from the app or webpage, YouTube playback stops as soon as you leave mobile Safari. This means that using YouTube as a music player is out of the question. Or is it? Can you make YouTube play just the audio, even when you’re not showing the video? You can, and it’s really, really simple.

How to play YouTube audio in the background on iPhone

Why would you want to play YouTube videos without watching them? Because doing so lets you avoid paying. YouTube will let you stream background audio if you subscribe to YouTube Premium for $12 per month, or YouTube Music for $10 per month. And that’s fine, but there’s a free way to do this, too.

Ask YouTube to show the desktop site.

On the iPhone, find the video you want to listen to in Safari. Then:

  • Tap the Aa button on the far left of Safari’s address bar. This is the button you use to enter Reader View. In this case, choose Request Desktop Website from the list. When it loads, play the video and leave Safari.
  • Swipe to open the Control Center. In the media playback section, you’ll see the name of the video above the play button. Just press play, and the music will play in the background.

Desktop YouTube acts like any other audio source.

What about the iPad?

The iPad is even easier because, since iPadOS 13, Safari automatically loads the desktop version of websites. So, if you’re listening to a YouTube video and it stops playing, just use the Control Center shortcut to start it up again.

I love this workaround because it requires no special settings, extra apps or even shortcuts. It just works, and you can try it today.

The Playlist: Top 10 Songs to Play on an African Safari

  • Ariana Ostrow

safari play music

So now you’ve seen the Lion King in 3D and you want to go to Africa.

OK, maybe that’s just me but I’m sure pretty much everyone wants to go to the big-A for some reason or another, be it for a Safari through the Serengeti, a bit of lazy beach lounging in Cape Town or some white-man-guilt-volunteering in Malawi.

You might even have started planning your trip already by selecting the countries to visit, having all the flu-shots and studying the different types of Antelopes. But we all know that in order to really get into the rhythm for a big journey such as an African safari or a European roadtrip , there’s no better way to get into the rhythm of it than with a nice n’ juicy playlist . Lucky for you, It just so happens that we have bag full of genuinely African grooves and cheesy wannabe-African pop alike to sink your tune-teeth into. But fear not dear traveller, we promise you that our playlist is completely free of any cringeworthy 90’s new age world horror!

So whether you’ve already watching the stewardess demonstrating how to put on an oxygen mask on a flight to Kenya, or if you’re just dreaming of the African sun from a grey and rainy London (like me!), this is what GrooveTraveler suggests you listen to:

Jealousy – Tony Allen Now here we get down with some seriously groovy 70’s Afrobeats by the African drummer legend Tony Allen supported by Africa 70 and Fela Kuti. This tune has you wiggling in your seat (in a good way, not the I-need-to-pee-way) with it’s irresistible rhythm.

Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa – Vampire Weekend After Tony Allen this song by American Ivy league college kids might just sound wrong but think what you might of their adaptaion of Afrobeat, it’s a catchy little bugger and ever so cute and indie.

I Zimbra – Talking Heads  David Byrne of Talking heads and producer Brian Eno were really into African Music, you never would have guessed it! YouTube says that Gene Wilder was on the bongos. I’m perfectly willing to believe it.

Gentleman – Fela Kuti I got a fever, and the only prescription is more Afrobeat! This one’s a classic by the king of the genre, Fela Kuti and comes with some mean sax on top.

Heygana – Ali farka Touré A wailing desert blues to play in the Sahara when you’re parched, your head’s feeling hot, you’re seeing mirages and that lizard has started talking to you…

Sabali – Amadou & Mariam This song by the blind couple from Mali is perhaps not their most African in style, (probably due to the obvious influence of producer Damon Albarn) but it’s a favourite of mine and Pitchfork’s, so shut up!

Warm heart of Africa – The Very Best Not a far cry from our friends in Vampire Weekend but with a bit of Malawi and London in the mix. The song title is obviously perfect for our little playlist and the catchy tune will have you singing along in Chichewa (national language of Malawi) within seconds.

Synchro Feelings – King Sunny Adé and his african beats Wonderfully easy-going sun lounging music at it’s best. Just close your eyes and let the psychedelic guitar wash over you with the African breeze.

Africa – Toto You knew it was coming, the most 80’s, most cliché and the most epic of them all. Don’t fight it. Until you’ve touched the rains down in Africa you have sing along with vigour and punch the air with an overbite. Do it!

Keep Listening to YouTube in the Background or With iPhone Locked

On iPhone , listening to YouTube audio in the background usually requires paying for a YouTube Premium subscription, but there is a simple workaround that allows you to keep listening to a video when you are doing other things on your ‌iPhone‌ or when your device is locked. Keep reading to learn how it's done.

General YouTube Feature 1

Unfortunately, YouTube Premium costs $13.99 a month to access these features. But if all you want to do is listen to YouTube-hosted audio like podcasts, music, or lectures when you are in other apps or when your ‌iPhone‌ is locked and in your pocket, there is a way to achieve this without paying for the subscription.

play The following steps show you how it's done.

  • Launch Safari on your ‌iPhone‌ and visit youtube.com , then search for the video whose audio you want to listen to.

safari

  • Tap the play button or tap the video to begin playback, while ignoring or dismissing any popups encouraging you to open the YouTube mobile app. (You will need to watch or skip a few ads before video playback begins.)

Lock Screen

After following the above steps, the audio from YouTube will continue to play on your locked ‌iPhone‌ for as long as the video lasts, leaving you free to pocket your device and listen on headphones.

youtube dynamic island

Alternatively, if you want to use other apps while listening, simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen to exit out of Safari, and then use the media controls in your ‌iPhone‌'s Dynamic Island or Control Center to resume playback when it automatically stops.

Our Guide to the Best Safari Playlist and African-Inspired Reads

There’s no better way to start a journey than to have the best safari playlist on repeat, making up the soundtrack to your adventure. Just like you wouldn’t road trip without the perfect tracks to sing along to, so you wouldn’t venture through Africa without listening to songs that’ll get you in the African spirit.

Africa is all about the journey and you need to be fully prepared – not just in the music department, however; you need a good book for those relaxing, lazy afternoons. We’re talking about those sunny African afternoons, where everything seems still and peaceful, the birds are singing, the trees are whistling and nature is reveling in the warm sunshine. What’s better than finding a peaceful spot in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nature, to read a good book?

Playlist recommendations:

Diamonds on the soles of her shoes, ladysmith black mambazo.

Although this song isn’t about Africa, it’s performed by one of South Africa ’s most promising up and comers. This is a feel good track that’ll have you singing and dancing your way through Africa – so you’ll definitely fit in with the locals!

Pata Pata, Miriam Makeba

Miriam Makeba was yet another iconic South African artist, and was nicknamed ‘Mama Africa’. Her songs give one a real feel for African music, with traditional sounds coming from the djembe drums, a West African instrument beaten with bare hands, and made from rope and animal skin.

Scatterlings of Africa, Johnny Clegg – Definitely listen to this!

You can’t go wrong with Johnny Clegg; one of South Africa’s most iconic artists. You may want to download his other favourite ‘Great Heart’, too.

Africa Unite, Bob Marley

Soothe your senses with Bob Marley’s soulful ‘Africa Unite’. You may also want to download Freshly Ground’s cover of this track too – it’s a melody too good not to download.

Circle of life from The Lion King

We just can’t leave the soundtrack from The Lion King off of this list, can we? It’s one of the all time favourites – and the filmset was, in fact, inspired by Kenya ’s Hell’s Gate National Park. Fitting indeed!

Waka Waka, Freshly Ground feat. Shakira

Waka Waka was the official World Cup anthem of 2010 which was held in South Africa. This song, though it’s a little dated now, will still get you on your feet, and singing along!

Grazing in the Grass by Hugh Masekela

Hugh Masekela was known as ‘the father of South African jazz’. His music is still loved to this day, as it’s soulful and incredibly composed. Jazz will get you in the African vibe, as it’s one of the most popular genres on the continent; so best you download Hugh Masekela’s music asap!

Must-reads:

Out of africa by karen blixen.

Out of Africa is a world-renown memoir written by Danish author, Karen Blixen. The book recounts the seventeen years she spent living in Kenya; taking the reader on her journey of self discovery, including her marriage to her second cousin, a Baron; as well as the development and management of her coffee plantation in a country which was in its last decades of being ruled by the British Empire.

Anything by Tony Park

Tony Parks’ fictional thrillers are all set in Africa; including Sossusvlei Namibia , Botswana and Kenya to name a few. Although he is an Australian writer, him and his wife live between Sydney and South Africa; where they have a home in the Kruger National Park, and they travel frequently to other areas of the continent. His books are not only captivating, but you’ll also be able to relate to them, especially if you’re travelling through the very place he is writing about.

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela

Long Walk to Freedom is an incredible autobiography written by the late Nelson Mandela himself. In the book he hones in on his journey to freedom in South Africa, beginning with his early childhood, his adolescents; through to his education and his 27 years in prison.

Dark Star Safari by Paul Theroux

Dark Star Safari is a true story based on author Paul Theroux’s trek from Cairo to Cape Town . It’s a thrilling, captivating read about the places he visited along the way, the people he met and the life changing lessons he learned.

I Dreamed of Africa by Kuki Gallmann

I Dreamed of Africa is very similar to Out of Africa by Karen Blixen, and surprisingly it’s set in the same area; the Savannah, near the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. This memoir, however, is a little different as Kuki fled the comfortable life she lived in Italy, to run a farm with her husband and son, in the continent that fascinated her since she was a small child.

Ultimate Safari Playlist & Travel Reads Chosen by Safari Veterans

An African Safari is an adventure of a lifetime, something that will leave a lasting imprint on your memory for years to come. It’s full of big moments and big game. However your time in the bush is subtly speckled with little things, the things that put the ‘ah’ in Safari. These seemingly trivial things, like the fluffy white bathrobe, the warm face towel after a long game drive, the perfectly mixed cocktail and the ultimate safari playlist, all add immense value to your overall experience. One of these little things which seem to go unnoticed and undervalued is the many quiet, reflective moments and the much-needed downtime the bush offers you to rejuvenate and get in touch with yourself and your surroundings. This time is as much as a gift as seeing a sleeping lion or a herd of wildebeest; it's a significant part of what makes a safari so magical. These moments are enhanced, with just a ‘little’ effort to add more value and appreciation to your experience, with something as simple as a good book or a great playlist, all which help encapsulate the real tranquillity of the wild. To ensure that all things both big and small come together glitch free and with ease, we have put together a list from travel experts around the world on their favorite book and song that have added that extra little bit of love on their last Safari adventure. So when you are planning your next African safari , you can add your own little ‘ah’ moments to your journey. Here is the ultimate safari playlist and must-read books curated by travelers, tour operators and safari experts from around the world. These little things will embed themselves in your journey adding insight, value and all the necessary feels. Let the experts guide you and let us know what put the ‘ah’ in your safari adventure.

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Paul Johnson, England

“For reading on safari, I'd recommend "Born Free" - it's a real story and, despite being first published over 50 years ago, still a great read for anyone with a love of wildlife. Music-wise, what could be better than The Lion King’s 'The Circle of Life'”

born free book recommended for kruger national park

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Damon M Banks , Award Winning Freelance Travel Writer, Washington D.C

“I will keep it simple. For a safari, I always go back to listening to the “Out of Africa” soundtrack – the book and soundtrack are great to have along to fill those peaceful evenings of a safari.

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Sean and Sabine, Cape Town

“When going on an African safari, I would recommend taking any book from Tony Park . He is an Australian author but, all of his books are set in Africa, and while on safari you will come across many places he has written about. His stories will take you from the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, Kruger National Park in South Africa, Masai Mara in Kenya to the white beaches of Zanzibar and all written with beautiful details. If I have to choose one of the many books he has written it will be “The Hunter”. This book takes me back to the Kruger National Park , Zimbabwe and the Victoria Falls which are some of my favorite places where I have traveled while on safari in Africa.

“My all-time favorite song to listen to when on a safari in Africa is ‘Hotel California’ from The Eagles. This song brings back great memories from my travels through Africa. This song, in particular, is great to listen to when driving on the beautiful desert roads of Namibia when the sun is slowly going down behind the far horizon.

Another great song is an all-time classic ‘Africa’ from Toto . The lyrics of the song describes what one feels when on a safari in Africa. An unforgettable experience which will want to make everyone come back to Africa for more.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Dave and Debs, Toronto

“Here's a travel book many people wouldn't think of, but we loved it."Neil Peart's Masked Rider" - Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time. He's been on every list as the best in the business and is a part of the mega rock band, Rush. But did you know Neil Peart is also an avid cyclist? He rode his bicycle through West Africa and this an excellent account of his experience.“Travel Song: Toto's "Africa". I've loved this song since it came out in the 80's and once I started traveling I loved it more because I actually understood the lyrics! That song came out when I was ten years old, but I loved it then. But I never knew what the Serengeti was, and Kilimanjaro was a mystical place I had only heard about from my mom. Once I traveled, I could relate to the dogs howling in the night and the rains of Africa. Toto's Africa makes me dream of going back.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Craig Glatthaar, Wilderness Safari, Cape Town

“For me, my must have read on safari for leisure is: “Whatever You Do, Don’t Run – True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide ” by Peter Allison. It’s a wonderfully written original account of a great guides misadventures in the wilds of Botswana .

“For an insider's understanding of animals in Africa, you can’t go wrong with “Beat About the Bush by Trevor Carnaby”. This book is a wonderful field guide (often used as the material for guide training programs) that makes the rather complex academic study of mammals and birds something easy for the layman to understand.“My favorite song while on safari would have to be Johnny Clegg’s – “Spirit of the Great Heart” . It’s difficult to describe what is fantastic about Africa and invariably these efforts resort to clichés about blue skies, open plains, and bushveld. This song captures the spirit and greatness of this amazing continent and the joy of being in nature.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Sara Essop, Safari Addict, Johannesburg

“I don't usually listen to music while on safari because I prefer listening to the sounds and sometimes the silence, of the bush, but if I had to choose a song to listen to, I would go with Shakira's Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) . The energy and rhythm of the song make me feel alive and happy to be in Africa and especially the African bush.

“As far as books go, my number one choice would be 101 Kruger Tales, a compilation of exhilarating real-life safari accounts of sightings, and encounters that took place in the world-renowned Kruger National Park . Reading these short, easy to read tales reminds me how wonderfully unpredictable the bush is. It gives me serious bush cravings when I’m not in the bush and enhances my experiences when I am there.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Cory Lee, Curb Free With Cory Lee, USA

“When I went on safari in South Africa, I listened to "Circle of Life" from The Lion King. I know it's very cliche, but as a 90s kid that grew up watching The Lion King, it was surreal to be on safari while listening to that song.

"A book that I'd recommend reading, especially if you're going to South Africa, is "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah. It's one of my favorite books ever and is about Trevor's experience growing up in South Africa . It's funny, sad, and gave me a new perspective on the people of South Africa. “

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Megan Peta, Cape Town

Whenever I go on safari, I make a playlist with all animal names like The Beatles , The Turtles, The Monkeys or songs like PHFat's Animals, because, "we love animals"!

“My favorite book to take along is something with short stories. Whether it's Fairlady magazine or Reader's Digest collection, Roald Dahl's 'Going Solo', I like being able to stop and start without being too interrupted. Short stories allow you to read a full story and not have to worry about losing track of where you are; makes holiday reading much easier.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Dawn Jorgensen, The Incidental Tourist, Cape Town

“Safaris are all about engaging the senses as we absorb the beauty of nature and all that time in the bush offers. Searching for the game, listening out for the call of the fish eagle and breathing in the dizzy smells of Africa as your 4x4 vehicle takes to the open road in search of elephants and lion.“To further enhance my safari experience, depending on where they are, I’m in the habit of reading a book that is related to the area that I am visiting. Gorillas in the Mist before my Gorilla Trekking in Uganda, Out of Africa when in Kenya , and the Elephant Whisper in KwaZulu Natal , as they offer even more understanding of the area that I’m lucky enough to be visiting. As for music, Toto’s Africa always evokes raw pride and emotion.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Jerome Shaw, Travel Boldly, Colorado

“Graham Greene's "Journey Without Maps" would be an excellent book companion on my safari. As would Joy Adamson's book "Born Free”.“The theme music to "Out of Africa" by John Barry is almost mandatory for any trip to Africa. Another obvious choice is "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by Tokens. It is better known as "Wimoweh". A bit more obscure is "The Click Song" or Qongqothwane performed here by Miriam Makeba.”

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Carrie Hampton, Safari Tart, Cape Town

"Africa House" – by Christina Lamb. A fascinating true story of how an English Gentleman built a huge mansion and a whole village with a school in the middle of Zambia in the 1920’s. I have visited and was astounded by this Tuscan-style estate with formal rose gardens by a lake infested with crocodiles. It has the finest natural hot springs as well."The Seed Thief by Jacqui L’Ange" – a novel by a South African journalist; a story crossing continents from Cape Town to Brazil of rare seeds that could cure cancer.“Road Tripping South Africa by Map Studio – with a chapter by me called ‘Ultimate Safari’: starting in KZN, traveling through Swaziland and onto Kruger having safari experiences all along the route.”Songs:

  • Out of Africa theme song – John Barry (I love that movie!)
  • Scatterlings of Africa – Johnny Clegg
  • Pata Pata - Miriam Makeba
  • Jabulani – PJ Powers
  • Knocking on Heaven’s Door – Bob Dylan
  • Ride like the Wind – Christopher Cross (this just makes me feel free)
  • I Wanna be like You – Jungle Book (especially good for watching baboons)
  • Morning Has Broken – Cat Stevens

Ultimate Safari Playlist: Tami and Anton, TAZZDiscovers, Cape Town

“After our 11-week road trip around South Africa , we have found a way to create the perfect playlist for your soundtrack to a family adventure. Traveling with kids can make you feel like you are losing your mind so, finding audiobooks and CDs takes a lot of thought and planning. Since we were short on space and relatively old-fashioned when it came to the CD vs. MP3 set up, we grabbed an 80 sleeve CD file and filled it with everything we could think of. Half our selection never saw the light of day, but others became favorites very quickly.“Books: The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, The Lion King, The Chronicles of Narnia, Peter Pan and other Disney favorites.“CDs:Mango Groove, Johnny Clegg, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Pentatonix, The Cats Musical soundtrack, Pitch Perfect soundtrack mixed in with sing-along radio hits to keep everyone's spirits ups.

“Your selection will depend on the stage of your life, and you need to take the time to find what works for you.”There are so many options so many beautiful variations, for your 'ah' moments the possibilities are endless. Pick what's going to best suit the stage of your life, the space that you're in and how you best wish to encapsulate and translate all that you're feeling and experiencing. There is no right or wrong. Those little ‘ah’ moments are yours for the making. Let us know how you decided to fashioned yours.

Can't play audio via web browser (Safari)

I listen to music on various websites and at random times, when I go to play a different song, change radio stations, etc the browser will get stuck in a loop and it won't play the song. It just sits there trying to play the song and it never will. The only cure for the problem is rebooting the Mac.

Doesn't matter what browser I'm using, does this same thing in Safari, Firefox and Chrome. Doesn't matter what website I'm on. Doesn't matter what sound card I'm using whether it be the external sound card connected or the Mac's own internal sound card.

This problem happens daily. There is no consistency as to when the problem will start, but again, rebooting is the only thing to temporarily fix the issue.

Hi Jeremy -

I have looked at Activity Monitor to see if other applications might have been using up my memory or causing some kind of conflict but usually my memory looks kind ok. An example of a site where I stream audio from is Beatport.com

It happens on any site where I stream audio but that is the one I most often use. On Beatport, I'm searching for music and putting them into playlists which is my workflow. It behaves as if the OS wants to cache something in a temp folder somewhere before playing the audio stream and maybe that temp folder has to be cleared? I'm not sure if that is how it works on a Mac, but it's my only guess. Rebooting always fixes the issue. Then I go back to streaming and I'll listen to a few seconds of one song, then skip to the next, then skip to the next, until I come across one I like. After maybe 30 minutes of doing this, it will eventually just not want to play the song. Everything else in the browser works fine. I can click on links, I can download stuff...I just can't stream audio. Refreshing the browser doesn't fix the issue. I've always tried completely closing out of Safari and restarting the browser and 100% of the time I have to reboot to fix the issue. My only guess that a reboot does something to temporarily fix the issue like clearing a temp folder or something?

I'm a DJ, so I'm streaming audio on record pool sites like BPMSupreme.com, DirectMusicService.com, Beatport.com etc.

All other applications work fine for streaming audio. Even after the problem starts in the browser, I can still listen to audio from Apple Music or Rekordbox (DJ Software) ...I can even still watch videos and listen to audio in the browser in YouTube...just not on sites like Beatport.

I'll try the update to see if that helps. Thank You

  • Music App on Mac computer is quieter recently Has anyone else noticed that since their recent Mac system update, the Music app has been quieter than it used to be? For example, if I preview an audio file on my computer (by navigating to the file and clicking the play button), the volume will be quite a bit louder as opposed to when I play the song in the Music app. Very annoying issue. Even if you turn the volume setting (top right hand corner of Music app) all the way up, the songs just aren't as loud as they used to be using the Music App on Mac. I'm finding that I have to turn my speakers up much louder than I used to, even compared to playing songs off Youtube in Safari. Also, the volume will occasionally "jump" up, especially when you first start playing a song. Apple, can you please try to fix this bug? 1252 5

Hey there, deuptyvanhalen.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I'd be glad to see what I can do to assist you with the issue you mentioned about your browsers becoming unresponsive after a random amount of time while playing music.

You mentioned that this happens on multiple sites and with multiple browsers. At any point after this began to occur, have you checked Activity Monitor to see if anything listed there might help to get to the bottom of this? If not, look over How to use Activity Monitor on your Mac to get an understanding of how the app works and what to look for.

Also, once the music ceases to play, do you notice that any other functionality in the browsers no longer works properly, or does everything work normally except streaming music on these sites? Do you have an example of one of these sites?

You provided that your Mac is currently running 10.15.4, and the most recent version is 10.15.5, so you might want to update that software to see if there is a difference in behaviors afterwards. You can get more info on how to do that in How to update the software on your Mac .

Hey deuptyvanhalen.

Thanks for the great info. That helps me understand what's going on more clearly. What I'd like to have you try now is to see if this same behavior occurs when using a test user. This will help us narrow down the scope of the issue at hand to either being one that is system wide or specific to a certain user. Knowing that will then allow us to attack the potential causes, as the paths might be a bit different. How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac will walk you through setting up that test user.

PRESS RELEASE

The release introduces all-new customization options, the biggest-ever redesign of Photos, powerful updates for staying connected, and Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA  Apple today previewed iOS 18 , a major release that features more customization options, the biggest redesign ever of the Photos app, new ways for users to manage their inbox in Mail, Messages over satellite, and so much more. Users will be able to arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, customize the buttons at the bottom of the Lock Screen, and quickly access more controls in Control Center. Photo libraries are automatically organized in a new single view in Photos, and helpful new collections keep favorites easily accessible. Mail simplifies the inbox by sorting email into categories using on-device intelligence, and all-new text effects come to iMessage. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, users can now communicate over satellite in the Messages app when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection isn’t available. 1

iOS 18 also introduces Apple Intelligence , the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant. 2 Built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context, to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.

“We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18. It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customization and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages. There are so many benefits for everyone,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “This release also marks the beginning of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence delivering intuitive, powerful, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all with privacy at the core. We can’t wait for users to experience it.”

iPhone users have new ways to customize the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. Users can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, including placing them right above the dock for easy access or perfectly framing a wallpaper. App icons and widgets can take on a new look with a dark or tinted effect, and users can make them appear larger to create the experience that is perfect for them.

Control Center has been redesigned to provide easier access to many of the things users do every day, and it gets new levels of customization and flexibility. The redesign delivers quick access to new groups of a user’s most-utilized controls, such as media playback, Home controls, and connectivity, as well as the ability to easily swipe between each. Users can now add controls from supported third-party apps into Control Center to quickly unlock a vehicle or jump right into capturing content for social media — all from one place. The new controls gallery displays the full set of available options, and users can customize how the controls are laid out, including adjusting them to the ideal size and creating entirely new groups.

For the first time, users can now switch the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen, including choosing from options available in the controls gallery or removing them entirely. With the Action button available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, users can quickly invoke controls available in the gallery.

Photos receives its biggest-ever redesign to help users easily find and relive special moments. A simplified, single view displays a familiar grid, and new collections help users browse by themes without having to organize content into albums. Plus, collections can be pinned to keep favorites easily accessible. A new carousel view presents highlights that update each day and feature favorite people, pets, places, and more. Autoplaying content throughout the app brings libraries to life, so past moments can be enjoyed while browsing. Because each user’s photo library is unique, the app is customizable, so users can organize collections, pin collections to access frequently, and include what’s most important to them in the carousel view.

iMessage receives all-new text effects that bring conversations to life by amplifying any letter, word, phrase, or emoji with dynamic, animated appearances. Users can better express tone by adding formatting like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks expand to include any emoji or sticker, and now users can compose a message and schedule to send it at a later time.

When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS.

iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite for the times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, Messages via satellite automatically prompts users to connect to their nearest satellite right from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. 3 With Dynamic Island, users always know when they are connected to a satellite. Because iMessage was built to protect user privacy, iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Later this year, Mail will introduce new ways for users to manage their inbox and stay up to date. On-device categorization organizes and sorts incoming email into Primary for personal and time-sensitive emails, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Mail also features a new digest view that pulls together all of the relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important in the moment.

Safari, the world’s fastest browser, 4 now offers an even easier way to discover information on the web with Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Using machine learning, Safari can surface key information about a webpage. For example, users can review a summary to get the gist of an article; quickly see the location of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark; or listen to an artist’s track right from an article about the song or album. Reader has been redesigned to offer even more ways to enjoy articles without distraction, with a summary and table of contents included for longer articles.

Building on the foundation of Keychain, which was first introduced more than 25 years ago, the new Passwords app makes it easy for users to access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. The app also includes alerts for users regarding common weaknesses, such as passwords that are easily guessed or used multiple times and those that appear in known data leaks.

iOS 18 gives users even more control with tools to manage who can see their apps, how contacts are shared, and how their iPhone connects to accessories.

Locked and hidden apps offer users peace of mind that information they want to keep private, such as app notifications and content, will not inadvertently be seen by others. Users can now lock an app; and for additional privacy, they can hide an app, moving it to a locked, hidden apps folder. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app are hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system.

iOS 18 puts users in control by letting them choose to share only specific contacts with an app. In addition, developers now have a way to seamlessly connect third-party accessories with iPhone without letting an app see all the other devices on a user’s network, keeping a user’s devices private and making pairing seamless.

Deeply integrated into iOS 18 and built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

New image capabilities make communication and self-expression even more fun. With Image Playground, users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use, built right into apps like Messages, and also available in a dedicated app.

Memories in Photos lets users create the stories they want to see just by typing a description. Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. In addition, a new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject.

With the power of Apple Intelligence, Siri takes a major step forward, becoming even more natural, contextually relevant, and personal. Users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy in AI, with the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing, and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers. When requests are routed to Private Cloud Compute, data is not stored or made accessible to Apple and is only used to fulfill the user’s requests, and independent experts can verify this privacy.

Additionally, access to ChatGPT is integrated into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools across Apple’s platforms, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools.

Additional features in iOS 18 include:
