Running macOS 12.3.1 Monterey, Safari 15.4 MacBook Pro I've tried all of the logical ways of adding the download icon back into the menu bar, no go. It doesn't even appear in the icon options to customize the toolbar. Help...anybody know how to get that icon back? Every time I attempt to download, it goes to the printer icon. Thanks.

There is no option for Downloads to be dragged to the Toolbar. You can view your downloads by clicking on OPTION+CMD+l or View->Show Downloads. Go to Preferences and General and set the folder where the files should be downloaded. With that in place, all downloads will automatically go to that folder. What are you trying to achieve anyway?

....or is the OP referring to the Downloads icon in the menu bar of Safari? If so click on the menu bar of Safari and drag the Downloads icon from the drop down selection to the Menu bar.

Until the OP comes back, we have no clue. So let's just wait..

I'm using a new M1 iMac using Monterey 12.3.1 and Safari has the Download icon.

This is very interesting, I'm on 12.3.1 as well. I also don't have the "Open app launcher" in my list. I had to enable the Develop menu option to get the "Web Inspector" to show up.

Download items from the web using Safari on Mac

Download music, PDFs , software, and other items by clicking links on webpages.

Important: If a download contains software, an alert appears when you open the item. To be safe, don’t open it if you weren’t expecting a software program or if it’s not from a trusted source.

Open Safari for me

Download an item

Choose Download Linked File. (Some webpage items can’t be downloaded.)

Safari decompresses files such as .zip files after it downloads them.

Note: If you download an item that you previously downloaded, Safari removes the older duplicate so it doesn’t take up space on your Mac. See Optimize storage space .

If you have trouble downloading, try any of the following:

If Safari is still downloading the item, wait for it to finish. You can’t open an item while it’s being downloaded.

safari no download icon

Sometimes a download is incomplete because the file was damaged. Try downloading it again.

Make sure you have the app needed to open the file. If you do, the file may have been corrupted during the download. Delete it, then try downloading it again.

See items you downloaded

The button isn’t shown if the downloads list is empty.

Do any of the following:

safari no download icon

Tip: To change where downloaded items are saved on your Mac, choose Safari > Settings, click General, then click the “File download location” pop-up menu and choose a location.

Clear the downloads list: In the downloads list, click Clear. To remove one item, Control-click it, then choose Remove From List.

By default, Safari automatically removes an item after one day. To change when items are automatically removed, choose Safari > Settings, click General, then click the “Remove download list items” pop-up menu and choose an option.

The downloaded file may be a compressed archive or disk image that contains the file you want. If the file is from a trusted site, double-click it to decompress it.

If you downloaded an app and you see a message that the app can’t be opened because it’s from an unidentified developer or wasn’t downloaded from the Mac App Store, you can open the app by overriding security settings .

How To Fix A Missing Safari Icon On iPhone Or iPad

Safari icon touchscreen

Safari is built into iOS and cannot be removed from your iPhone or iPad (except when the device has been jailbroken), but it can go missing from the home screen. If it does, it's often easy enough to locate it.

You can usually find it with the Spotlight — swipe down on the home screen and search "safari." Sometimes a user will tuck Safari into a cluttered folder where the icon can get lost. To find it, you just have to look for it.

Suppose you always launch the app from the App Library, and the Safari icon is missing. In that case, it's possible the browser was accidentally deleted from the App Library — a space where all apps are auto-organized into tidy folders. You can hide an app from the Home Screen when it's being moved to the App Library. When it's also deleted from the Library, the icon can go missing.

But what's more likely is that the restriction features in iOS are hiding Safari from you. Parental controls or Screen Time management can hide Safari from view, according to Apple .

How to bring the missing Safari icon back

Before reconfiguring the restriction features on your iPhone or iPad, try resetting the Home Screen. The Safari icon may be hidden, not the app itself. Here's what Apple  recommends.

  • Open Settings.
  • Find and tap General.
  • Select Transfer or Reset iPhone .
  • Select Reset.
  • Select Reset Home Screen Layout.
  • Select Reset Home Screen.

Resetting the Home Screen sends all app icons back to their original slots.

If you still can't see Safari, Screen Time is hiding the app from you. Screen Time is a feature that limits how much time you're allowed on a particular app. It's protected with a PIN (that's supposed to be different from the password that unlocks your iPhone or iPad).

You can either disable Screen Time entirely, or just safelist Safari.

  • Tap Screen Time.
  • Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • Enter your passcode.
  • Tap Allowed Apps.
  • Enable the switch next to Safari to allow it.

To disable the feature entirely, you can also toggle off the switch next to Content & Privacy Restrictions.

How to fix Safari not downloading files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

You may, at times, encounter an issue where Safari refuses to download photos, videos, audio, PDFs, documents, and other files from a website. In this article, we’ll explore common reasons why Safari may not be downloading files on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and provide solutions to help you get back to downloading with ease.

List of Safari downloads on iPhone

The issues you may be facing

  • Clicking the download link opens a new blank tab, and no file download starts.
  • Safari is refusing to begin file downloads from one or all sites.
  • File download starts, but it fails immediately in a second or two.
  • The download happens up to a point and then fails midway or just before completing.
  • Safari downloads a file but opens it and then deletes the original files (this happens with ZIP and other compressed files).

The solutions below should help fix all the above issues and also ones similar to them.

Before you begin

It’s possible that you’re not following the right steps to download the file. On Mac, it’s super easy, but on iPhone and iPad, downloading files may not be as obvious. With that said, even if the file has been downloaded, you may not know where it’s saved and how to find it. So, look at these tutorials, if needed:

  • How to download videos from Safari on iPhone and iPad
  • How to download files and documents to iPhone or iPad
  • How to access downloaded files on iPhone and iPad

Retry the download

In many cases, initiating the download again does the trick. Try hitting the download link again, and it should work. If not, refresh the webpage and click the download button again.

Note: Some websites put downloads behind a login wall. So, make sure to honor that.

Pause and resume the download

The download may look like it has started, but it will pause or fail in a few seconds. If that happens, hit the tiny retry button a few times, and it should start the download. If not, hit the download link again on the website.

Check your internet

Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to a stable Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, or Ethernet connection and the internet is working properly.

Allow the website to download files

When you try to download a file from a website for the first time, it doesn’t start immediately. Instead, you will see an alert asking your permission to allow this site to download and save files locally or not. Make sure you allow that. If you choose to block the download, follow these steps to fix it:

On iPhone and iPad: Hit the download link again on the website and tap Allow or Download when asked. If you don’t see the Allow button, clear your browser data.

Allow and Download popup alert in Safari before downloading a file

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. Now, go to Websites > Downloads > click the drop-down menu next to the website name and choose Allow . While you’re here, also make sure it says ‘ Ask ‘ or ‘ Allow ‘ next to ‘ When visiting other websites .’

Allow websites to download files in Safari on Mac

Force Quit and reopen Safari

On iPhone and iPad: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold or double-press the Home button to enter App Switcher. From here, drag the Safari app card all the way up to close it .

On Mac: Save your work in any other open Safari tabs. Next, click the Apple icon  and choose Force Quit . Here, select Safari and click Force Quit .

Now reopen Safari and try downloading the file again.

Use alternate download links

You may see more than one download link on a website. If one link fails to work, try the other one. Note: Sometimes, picking a different download quality (for a video, audio, or image) should do the trick.

Choose different download quality for image, video, and audio

Set Safari download location to anything other than iCloud Drive

If you have set Safari to download files to iCloud Drive,  switch it to any other local storage folder using the steps below:

On iPhone or iPad: Settings > Safari > Downloads > On My iPhone or Other .

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. From the General section, select Downloads , Desktop , or any local folder next to ‘ File download location .’

File download location in Safari on Mac

Stop Safari from automatically opening files after download

By default, Safari on Mac is set to open files after downloading them. That means if you download a ZIP file, Safari will automatically unzip it after downloading. In rare cases, this may cause the download to fail, not complete successfully, or not even start in the first place if the file you’re trying to download is incompatible. Therefore, it’s best to turn it off from Safari Settings > General > uncheck ‘ Open “safe” files after downloading .’

Restart your device

If Safari is unable to download files due to minor glitches, save your work and do a restart .

Make sure your device has sufficient free space

New file downloads will only succeed if your iPhone, iPad, or Mac has enough free space. So go to Settings, and check how much free storage you have. If it’s full, use these tutorials to free up space:

Clear Safari history and cache

One of the most reliable solutions to fix Safari issues is clearing its history and website data .

On iPhone and iPad, you can do this from Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

On Mac, click History from the top menu bar and select Clear History .

Try disabling a recently installed Safari extension

If you could download files earlier but can’t after installing an extension, then that extension is likely the culprit. Remove it, restart your device, and now you should have no problem downloading files.

On iPhone and iPad: Head over to this guide on installing and removing Safari extensions .

On Mac: Go to Safari Settings > Extensions > select the extension and click Uninstall .

Uninstall extension from Safari on Mac

Update Safari

Safari updates are tied to system updates on iPhone and iPad. So, go to Settings app > General > Software Update and get the latest version of the operating system.

On Mac, you can update Safari from System Settings .

Update your Mac

If you’re on an older version of macOS, consider updating to the latest version, which should improve your computer’s overall working and stability.

On macOS Ventura and later, go to System Settings > General > Software Update . And on macOS Monterey and earlier, go to System Preferences > Software Update .

Safari Downloads Not Working? 10 Troubleshooting Tips and Fixes to Try

Having issues with downloads in Safari on your Mac? We’ll cover how to troubleshoot lost, stuck, and missing Safari downloads problems.

It's not always easy to download files in Safari on a Mac. Sometimes, files seem to disappear after you download them, while other times, they don't download at all. Confusingly, this can happen for a variety of reasons. However, the fixes are all easy enough.

In some cases, the solution to Safari's downloading issues involves checking your Downloads folder. In other cases, it involves disabling any plugins that might cause you problems. These are all simple actions, so it shouldn't take you long to get downloading again. We'll walk you through everything you can try to fix when Safari won't download anything.

1. Check Your Default Downloads Folder

Safari sends every file you download to a folder on your Mac. Unsurprisingly, it uses Downloads as the default location. However, you can change this, perhaps without even realizing it.

You should thus check where Safari sends your downloads and change it accordingly if desired. To do this:

  • Click Safari in the menu bar and choose Settings .
  • Select the General tab.
  • Expand the File download location dropdown box.
  • Select Other , then when your Mac displays your local folders, select Downloads from the left sidebar (or whatever folder you'd like to use) and click the Select button.

You can set the default download location to a folder other than Downloads , of course. But make sure you remember what this alternative folder is. Otherwise, you could lose time searching for files that aren't in an obvious folder. If you'd like Safari to ask where your download should be stored every time, select Ask for each download .

2. Check the "Open Safe Files" Box

Sometimes, it might seem like Safari downloads aren't working normally because of the Open "safe" files after downloading option, which you'll find in Safari's General Preferences pane.

This option is turned on by default. It instructs Safari to automatically open all "safe" files once they've finished downloading. By turning it off, you might mistakenly think that Safari has stopped downloading properly since it stops automatically opening your files.

However, you can easily turn it back on. You simply have to do the following:

  • Go to Safari > Settings from the menu bar.
  • Make sure you're on the General tab.
  • Check the small box next to Open "safe" files after downloading .

Safari will now open all "safe" files for you after it downloads them. And in case you were wondering, Apple defines certain file types, such as pictures and PDFs, as "safe."

3. Check Your Wi-Fi Network

It's worth bearing in mind that if you can't download in Safari, it might not be Safari that's the problem. In fact, it could be that your Wi-Fi connection is too slow or isn't working normally. In that case, there are some steps you can take.

First, make sure you're actually connected to a Wi-Fi network and that your Mac is close to the router. You'll typically suffer from slow downloads when you're farther away from the router, so moving closer can solve some problems.

Also, you can often speed up your Wi-Fi connection by changing your router's channel. You can do this by typing your router's IP address into Safari's address bar and hitting Return . You'll then come to your router's settings page, which is where you can change the channel it uses.

One other trick you can try is checking whether another device is eating up your Wi-Fi's bandwidth. This can slow down the speed of downloads, particularly if lots of devices are doing intensive work at the same time. Try pausing video streaming, online gaming, and similar activities if you can.

Similarly, if you're downloading a large file, you might simply have to wait for it to finish downloading.

4. Change DNS Servers

Using a popular DNS (Domain Name System) server can improve Safari's odds of locating a file's download servers. Let's try ditching your ISP's DNS servers in favor of Google DNS. Here's how:

  • Click the Wi-Fi status icon on the macOS menu bar and select Wi-Fi Settings .
  • Make sure that Wi-Fi is selected in the sidebar. Then, click Details , located on the right-hand side of the name of your currently connected network.
  • Click OK to save your changes. Your Mac may prompt you to verify your identity first in order to save.

Save your changes and try downloading the file again. For the best results, flush your Mac's DNS cache before you do that.

5. Check for Paused Downloads

Starting a download and closing your Mac while it's still in progress can pause it. This could be an obvious reason why you can't find the download in your Downloads folder: it hasn't actually finished downloading.

In such cases, you have to restart the download. You can do this by clicking the Show Downloads button at the top of Safari's window, which looks like an arrow pointing down. Then, hit the Resume button, which resembles the circular refresh arrow in most web browsers.

6. Try Downloading Again

Sometimes, files get corrupted or damaged when you download them. This can stop the download from finishing, or it can stop you from opening a file once it's downloaded.

Either way, you can try simply downloading the file again. This is a basic step, but it can work wonders.

7. Clear the Safari Cache

An outdated browser cache can wreak havoc and cause all sorts of issues and might result in Safari not downloading files on your Mac. Here's how you can clear your browser's cache:

  • Head to the Advanced tab.
  • Check the box next to Show Develop menu in menu bar .
  • Select Develop on the menu bar.
  • Click Empty Caches .

Now, re-attempt the download to see if deleting the cache made a difference

8. Check Your Mac's Security & Privacy Settings

Sometimes, Safari download problems occur because your Mac doesn't let you open apps from unidentified developers. You'll find this setting in the Privacy & Security section of System Settings, which restricts you from opening apps downloaded from the App Store by default.

Fortunately, you can open apps from unidentified developers, assuming you trust them. This is what you should do:

  • Launch Finder .
  • Type the name of the app you want to open into Finder's search bar.
  • Click This Mac to search your entire system.
  • Control-click the app in question and click Open .

You can also change your settings to let you always open apps downloaded from outside the App Store. This involves doing the following:

  • Launch System Settings and head to Privacy & Security from the sidebar.
  • Scroll down the page to the Security section.
  • Under Allow apps downloaded from , click App Store and identified developers .
  • Enter your administrator password or use Touch ID to authorize changes.

Note that this option only permits apps from known developers, so if you download an app from an unidentified developer, you'll have to go through the process above. When your Mac blocks an unidentified app, you'll also see a prompt to open it in the Privacy & Security pane here.

9. Disable Safari Extensions and Plugins

Extensions and plugins can sometimes interfere with how web browsers operate. This includes downloading, so if you're having download problems on Safari, you should try disabling any recently installed add-ons or plugins in your browser.

This is what you should do:

  • Click Safari > Settings in the menu bar.
  • Select the Extensions tab.
  • Uncheck the extensions or plugins you want to disable.

Once you've disabled any suspect extensions or plugins, you should try completing your download again. If it works, you know that the disabled add-on was most likely the cause of the problem. You should keep it disabled whenever downloading.

But if you need it for other tasks, remember to enable it when you do them.

10. Ensure You Have Adequate Storage Space

It might sound obvious, but you can't download a file that's larger than your Mac's available storage space. If you're trying to download a larger file, you will see a warning that Safari cannot download the file because the drive doesn't have enough free space. You can check how much free storage space is on your Mac by following these steps:

  • Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
  • Choose About This Mac , then click More Info from the pop-up. This will take you to the About page in the System Settings app.
  • Finally, scroll down to the Storage section. You will see your total disk space and the amount of free space remaining.
  • Optionally, click Storage Settings to see how your space is being utilized.

If you have less space, there are various ways to free up space on your Mac .

Enjoy an Easier Time Downloading Files in Safari

Apple offers Safari as a simple, built-in web browser that consumes less of your Mac's battery power compared to popular options such as Chrome and Firefox. As the above tips and fixes show, sometimes it can run into issues, but thankfully, there are many ways to solve your Safari download problems.

How to Find Missing Safari Icon on iPhone or iPad

By: Waseem Patwegar | Filed Under: iOS

When the Safari Icon goes missing from the Home screen of iPhone, most users start thinking about the possibility of Safari App being accidentally deleted by them or by someone with access to their device.

However, this is never the case as Apple prevents users from deleting native apps and Safari happens to be one of the most essential native Apps that cannot be deleted from an Apple device.

In most cases, the problem of missing Safari Icon ends up being due to the Safari App being accidentally moved to another Home Screen or becoming hidden in a Folder on the App Library screen.

A less common reason for Safari Icon missing or disappearing from the Home screen on iPhone is due to the Safari App being restricted by Screen Time Settings .

What to Do If Safari Icon is Missing on iPhone?

It can be quite frustrating to find Safari Icon missing on iPhone. Fortunately, in most cases, you should be able to fix this problem using the following steps.

1. Check All Home Screens & Folders

As mentioned above, the most common reason for Safari Icon missing on iPhone is due to the Safari App being accidentally moved to another Home Screen or a Folder.

Hence, the first step would be to carefully go through all the Home screens on your iPhone and look for the Safari App.

Also, go through all Folders and make sure that Safari Icon is not hiding in a Folder on your device.

2. Search For Safari Browser On iPhone

Follow the steps below to make your iPhone look for the missing Safari app.

1. Bring up the Search bar on the Home screen of your iPhone ( Swipe down or Swipe left , depending on the model of your iPhone).

2.  Type Safari in the Search bar and this should bring up Safari App in the search results.

Search for Safari on iPhone

3. Tap & Hold on the Safari Icon , drag it upwards slightly and release the finger to place Safari Icon back on the Home Screen of your iPhone.

Note: Even if the Safari App is hidden in a Folder, you will see the name of the Folder in which the Safari App Icon is hidden on your device.

3. Look For Safari in App Library

If you had accidentally removed Safari from the Home screen, it should be available in the App Library on your iPhone.

1. Swipe Left on the Home screen of your iPhone, until you reach the App Library screen.

2. On App Library screen, type Safari in the Search bar and you should find Safari appearing in the Search results.

3. Once Safari appears in the search results, tap and hold on Safari Icon and select Add to Home Screen option.

Add Safari to Home Screen on iPhone

This should immediately bring the Safari Icon back on the Home Screen of your device.

4. Unhide Home Screen

Another possibility is that you may have accidentally moved Safari to another Home screen and also hidden that Home Screen.

1. Tap & Hold on the Dots located on the Home Screen of your iPhone.

2. Look for Safari Icon in the Thumbnails and tap below the Thumbnail that contains the Safari Icon (if it does not have the check mark).

Unhide iPhone Home Screen Containing Safari Icon

3. This will unhide the Screen containing Safari Icon and you will find Safari back on the Home screen of your iPhone.

5. Reset Home Screen

An easy way to get native Apps like Safari back to their default position on the Home screen of your iPhone is to Reset the Home Screen.

1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset .

Reset Settings Option on iPhone

2. On the Reset Screen, select Reset Home Screen Layout option.

Reset Home Screen Layout option in iPhone

As mentioned above, resetting the Home Screen should bring back the Safari Icon to its usual position on the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

6. Disable Restrictions on Safari App

You may have accidentally or intentionally placed restrictions on Safari App, in order to prevent the possibility of your children accessing the internet and using up all your data.

1. Open Settings > Go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and tap on Allowed Apps .

Allowed Apps Settings Option on iPhone

2. On Allowed Apps screen, move the toggle next to Safari to  ON  position.

Allow Safari App on iPhone

Note: If you are using Screen Time Passcode , you will be prompted to enter Screen Time Passcode.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Safari Favorites Icons Missing? 7 Ways to Get Them Back

Safari favorites icons, or favicons, are a celebrated convenience that allows you to quickly see the website you want in history, bookmarks, or tabs. Unfortunately, these favicons tend to appear incorrectly or go missing. This article shows you how to get back missing favorite icons on your Mac.

Safari Favorites Icons Missing [How To Get Them Back]

If you notice that your Safari favorites icons are missing , clearing your cache and restarting Safari is the fastest way to get them back . There is another alternative way of opening the affected website in a private Safari window; I will look at it in detail later in the article.

How to Find Safari Favorites Icons Missing?

  • Method 1: Clear Safari favorites icons cache

Method 2: Use Safari Private Window

Method 3: create new user, method 4: verify your preferences, method 5: restore items from time machine, method 6: download updates.

  • Method 7: Use the safe mode

In Conclusion

If the favorites icons are missing in Safari on your Mac, try going to “Safari” > “Preferences” > “Tabs” and check the box next to “Show website icons in tabs.” If this doesn’t solve the issue, try resetting the Safari browser by going to “Safari” > “Reset Safari” and selecting the appropriate options. If the issue persists, try restarting your Mac or updating the operating system.

How to bring back Safari Favorites Icons

When Apple first introduced the favicon feature on Safari, most people unsurprisingly jumped on it enthusiastically. The convenience of quickly locating your favorite website on a tab or bookmark list was too good to pass up. Precious seconds are saved by that little image appearing in the history list of the Safari browser, while not seeing it can put some people off whatever they are doing on the internet. Even though the Safari favorites icon appears distorted or missing, we’re here to tell you that you can quickly recover the icon by following a few simple steps on your MacBook.

Method 1: Clear Safari favorites icons cache

Clearing the Safari favorites icons cache and starting over is the universal way of solving the problem of incorrect and missing favicons on your computer. Follow the steps below to get your favorite icons back.

  • Shut or quit Safari.
  • Go to Finder on your Mac.
  • Next, click on Go, then select Go To Folder on the visible menu.
  • A pop-up menu will appear, and you will need to type in/Library/Safari/Favicon Cache/
  • Once you’ve typed that in, you need to click on Go.
  • You must send all the items in the folder on your screen to Trash. Pressing the Command and the A key simultaneously selects all the files in the folder, then you can drag them to the trash. You can also right-click the files and select Move To Trash on the menu that appears on the screen.
  • Empty the entire trash or delete the items from the favicon cache folder only. The simplest way to empty your trash is by right-clicking the trash icon on your dock and selecting Empty Trash.
  • Open your Safari browser again and visit your saved sites.

The incorrect or distorted images should appear correctly. The favicon cache rebuilds itself as you visit your saved sites. However, in rare cases, some alternatives might help. I’ll now look at some of the methods that you can use. Feel free to try them all, as none take a long time to complete.

There is no guarantee that this alternative method will work, but it is worth a try if clearing the favicon cache is not working or if you prefer not to use it. Safari has a private window that does not store browsing history, and you can use this feature to try and refresh your favicons.

  • Right-click on Safari in the Dock
  • Select New Private Window
  • Visit the site with the incorrect or missing favicons
  • Close Private Window

The favicons should return to normal working conditions after this. You can try these further steps in the Private Window.

  • Select Preferences and click on Privacy on the Safari menu
  • Click on Manage Website Data, and a list of sites will appear
  • Choose the site that is causing issues and click on Remove
  • Click on Done to finish the process
  • Go back to the non-private window and open the website again.

Your Mac should be able to rebuild the favicon cache on its own. If you know your way around the device, you can manually make another favicon cache folder, but this is not a recommended route. It is better to contact the Apple Support center.

If you continue having issues with favicons, create a new user on your Mac. This method has worked for others on the Apple Community Forum , where users try to help each other solve various challenges with Mac. One user managed to retrieve all the missing favicons using this method.

  • Select System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) on your menu and click Users & Groups
  • Click on Add at the bottom of the dialogue box.
  • Choose the type of user, preferably the Administrator.
  • Enter the name of the new user and a password.
  • Click on Add User.

The first time you open Safari under the new user profile, favicons should all work perfectly. \

The Mac has a preference setting that allows tabs to display icons when you’re on Safari. Check that your preferences are set correctly by following these simple steps.

  • Open Safari
  • Click on Safari in the menu bar
  • Select Preferences
  • Click on Tabs, and a list of preferences will show up
  • Tick the box allowing website icons to be shown.

The image below shows the box that you should tick. You can try doing this a couple of times while restarting your device. Try this method several times, restarting your device each time.

safari favorites icons missing - Verify your preferences

If you use Time Machine to backup files, then you can use it to retrieve files and items. The good thing about Time Machine is that it works with almost all Mac apps. Here is a reminder of how to open Time Machine and retrieve files and items.

  • Click on the Time Machine icon. If the icon is not there, go to System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) and click Time Machine on the Apple menu.
  • Click on Show Time Machine in the menu bar to browse backups and local snapshots.
  • Use the arrows to look through your missing files and items. When you see the files you need, click Restore.

You can restore all the files at once or one by one. When restored, the files return to the original folder. Remember, you need to have already set your device to back up to the Time Machine for this method to work perfectly.

Your Safari favorites icons missing challenge can also be solved by updating your device. The macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Combo update fixes issues that prevent files from syncing with iCloud and resolves graphics. You can download this update and see if the problem is solved.

Follow these steps to download software updates on your Mac.

  • Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above).
  • Click on Software Update.
  • Open the Software Update preferences for the Safari folder.

You can also find a list of available updates in the Apple Store or set your device to check for software updates in the System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) automatically. However, for this particular issue of missing favicons, the Catalina 10.15.7 Combo update should be able to help.

Method 7: Use the safe mode

One way of solving issues on your Mac is to restart it in safe mode. The safe mode allows your device to start and run with limited functionality as you try and solve specific issues. You must determine if your device uses Apple silicon, then follow these steps.

  • Shut down your Mac device.
  • Turn on your Mac and hold the power tab until the startup options window appears.
  • Choose the startup disk.
  • Click the Continue in Safe Mode tab while holding down the shift key.
  • Log in, and if asked to, do it again.

If your device uses the Intel processor, follow the instructions below.

  • Turn on the Mac
  • Press and hold the shift key immediately
  • Release the shift key when the login window appears
  • Login as per instruction

All the methods mentioned here should help retrieve missing or distorted favicons. If you continue having issues after everything I have touched on here, you may need to reinstall your macOS to ensure that all the third-party apps are up to date.

Always keep your Mac device updated, as this helps solve issues before they arise. Clearing your favicon cache is the simplest and fastest way of retrieving your missing favicon. If it does not work, you should get joy from the other methods mentioned above. As a last resort, reinstall the operating system. None of your data is removed by reinstalling macOS. Click on the Reinstall macOS tab in the Utilities window and follow the instructions to complete the process.

Do not close the lid on your Mac until the reinstallation process is finished. Your device will load all the latest software updates and be as good as new. Besides everything I have covered here, you can also contact Apple support and get help.

Favicons provide a convenient way of quickly identifying websites on tabs, bookmark lists, and browser history. For those using the internet for work, favicons save valuable time and energy since you do not have to type the first few letters of sites to get where you want to be.

What icon are you referring to? Last time I checked, there is no Safari download icon. You've got to be a lot more specific that this if you want good help.

Aha! I found the icon you're referring to; it was hiding, and since I don't use it, I never knew it was there before.

If you want to get that icon back onto the Toolbar of Safari, you need to go to the View > Customize Toolbar… menu, which will show you all the icons you can select from. Find the Download icon and drag it to the position you want on Safari, then click Done and you've got it.

For some weird reason, Apple seems to make it hard to download safari (using Chrome on Windows OS currently). There's no real logical path you can use to download Safari right now:

  • Support, Other Products? Software? NOT
  • Support, Other Products? Support Resources? Downloads & Updates? Internet: YES, but 5 clicks after the homescreen for a major Apple product? Really??

Wouldn't make it sense to have a Downloads button on the home screen (is software not as much, or even more a product than hardware?) or at least a button/choice option under Support?

Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26212 (Canary Channel)

  • Amanda Langowski
  • Brandon LeBlanc

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26212 to the Canary Channel.

Developers, please note that for a short period of time, we will not be releasing an SDK for builds we flight to the Canary Channel.

Changes and Improvements

[windows share].

  • Users will be able to now generate QR codes for URLs and cloud file links through the Windows share window to seamlessly share webpages and files across their devices. To try this out in Microsoft Edge, just click the share button in the Edge toolbar and choose “Windows share options”.

Option to generate a QR code to share a URL through the Windows share window.

  • To prevent accidentally closing the Windows share window, clicking outside the Windows share window will no longer close it. To close the Windows share window, just press the close button at the top right corner.
  • If your Microsoft account uses a Gmail address, you can now send email to yourself from Windows share window and receive it in your Gmail account.

Example Gmail option to email yourself in the Windows share window highlighted in a red box.

[Copilot in Windows*]

  • Over the last few months, we’ve been trying out different experiences for Copilot in Windows (Preview) with Windows Insiders across the Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels. Some of these experiences include the ability for Copilot in Windows to act like a normal application window and the taskbar icon animating to indicate that Copilot can help when you copy text or images. We have decided to pause the rollouts of these experiences to further refine them based on user feedback. Copilot in Windows will continue to work as expected while we continue to evolve new ideas with Windows Insiders.

Fixes for known issues

  • We fixed the issue causing advanced startup options to not work. This also fixes the progress wheel from not showing when booting.
  • We believe we fixed the issue causing Features on Demand (FODs) to not install.
  • We are rolling out a fix for the issue causing Copilot to auto-launch unexpectedly for Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels after restarting their PCs. This issue was unrelated to the auto-launching experience we tried out with Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels  in early February which we stopped rolling out in March.

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • Fixed an issue that caused the taskbar to be partially off the screen on secondary monitors.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Narrator to be silent while rearranging your apps on taskbar.

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed an issue which was causing File Explorer to sporadically crash when using path suggestions in the address bar.
  • Fixed an issue which could cause File Explorer to crash sometimes when going from the search box to the body of File Explorer.

[Windowing]

  • Fixed a couple DWM crashes, which could cause the screen to appear to flash.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing some people to repeatedly see a message saying live captions were being missed.
  • Fixed an underlying issue which was causing Visual Studio to fail to debug x64 .NET framework console applications (the app would crash in ntdll.dll upon load).

Known issues

  • [IMPORTANT NOTE] We are investigating reports that some Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels are stuck on Build 26040 or Build 23620. The investigation is ongoing, however if you are impacted by this and really want to get onto the latest build in the Canary or Dev Channel today – you can download the latest ISO here and do a clean install and opt your device back into flighting in the Canary or Dev Channels.
  • [ADDED 5/12] The WIN + W keyboard shortcut may not work correctly and open the Widgets board on Build 26212.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel

  • The builds we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready .
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology , starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • To get off the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required . As a reminder – Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.
  • Check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
  • Copilot in Windows* in preview is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders in select global markets. The initial markets for the Copilot in Windows preview include North America, United Kingdom and parts of Asia and South America. It is our intention to add additional markets over time.

Thanks, Amanda & Brandon
