Preschool and Kindergarten African Safari Activities and Games

Large Group

Most children have seen the movie Lion King. Talk about the movie to get them thinking about African animals. Introduce the word safari.

What is a safari? (A safari is an adventurous trip to Africa to observe and photograph wildlife in their natural habitat and to experience African culture.)

Where would you go on a safari. How does the landscape look like? What would you find there? (eg. Things like grassland, lakes for the animals, trees)

What types of animals might you find on a safari? (eg. Elephants, lions, rhinoceros, zebras, hippos, cheetahs, chimpanzee, monkeys.)

Provide colorful picture books and photos of the animals and people going on a safari.

Story Time: We All Went On a Safari

safari kindergarten route

Arusha, Mosi, Tumpe and their Maasai friends travel through the grasslands of Tanzania and count animals along the way. The children encounter all sorts of animals including elephants, lions, zebras, and monkeys, while counting from one to ten in both English and Swahili. Children will learn about the meaning of the Swahili names for the African animals, look at a map and learn interesting facts about Tanzania and the Maasai people.

Together locate Africa and Tanzania on a map or globe.

I Went On Safari - Oral Language Skills

Print African animals pictures. Introduce the word ‘safari’ to the children. Choose a picture without showing it to the childen. Say, “I went on safari, and what did I see? I saw a (describe the animal) example  tall animal with a long neck  looking at me!” Let children guess the animals. Show the picture to the children and let them descibe the animal. What color is it, how many legs does it have, do they know what the animal eats? Next, let children move like the animals.

Dramatic Play

Block Center Add some jungle animals to your block center together with plastic trees, blue paper for lakes, and artifical grass.

African Safari Pretend Play

Cardboard Jeep

Create a simple jeep out of a cardboard box.

Tape pictures of a variety of African animals around the room.

Giraffes Story Time and Activities:

Outdoor Wild Animal Hunt

Glue pictures of African animals on construction paper. Hide a picture of each animal in various places outside. Before going outside talk about the weather in the Africa. Discuss that the animals and people need to protect themselves from the hot strong sun. The animals look for shade from trees, roll in mud, or cool down in the water. People wear sun hats and drink lots of water. Explain to children that you will go on a safari outside. Invite children to walk around looking through their binoculars to find some wild animals that are hiding. After 5 minutes call children back to your "camp". Ask children which kind of animals they saw on their safari. Do they remember where the zebra was? Ask one child to go and catch the animal. Repeat with the remaining animals.

How to Plan an African Safari for Kids of All Ages

A T+L A-List travel advisor weighs in on how to plan the perfect African safari for the whole family.

At Extraordinary Journeys , we believe it is important to explore the world with our children , but we are also aware that traveling with kids can be less vacation and more work. For everyone to enjoy the adventure, it's important to plan ahead.

The right hosts, the right pace, the right guides, and the right activities based on your kids interests and ages are critical. With so many considerations, I've broken down some expert tips for ensuring your family African safari adventure is an actual vacation for everyone.

Related : 10 Mistakes to Avoid on a Safari, According to Experts

Essential tips for all ages

  • Think activities, not countries: Match the safari destination that's right for your family and kids by first thinking about the activities that your family enjoys. Rather than tick off multiple counties in one trip, consider planning your adventure all within one country.
  • Have a private guide: A private guide is essential for going on safari with kids. Not only will your kids connect with the staff, but the adults will get a well-deserved break from 24/7 parenting duties. If a private guide is out of reach for your budget, private vehicles at each camp will give you the flexibility to make sure everyone is always having fun.
  • Talk before the trip: Describe where you will stay, what animals you can expect to see, how you will travel around, what activities are available. Get their input and make sure your kids feel every bit a part of planning the adventure.

For young kids (under age 6)

Many safari camps only accommodate kids ages 5 and up, so if you're traveling with the preschool set on safari, identify camps that do take the little ones. I recommend South Africa or Tanzania for families with younger kids. Accommodation is typically free for children under 5, so the only costs are park fees and flights.

  • Slow it down : Consider four nights in each safari camp to give your kids some time to warm up to the place and the people (especially if your little ones are shy around new people). Settling in will make the camp feel more like home, so your family will have the chance to fully relax.
  • Build in non-safari activities : Activities like making pizzas, building bows/arrows, and following tracks are the norm at most camps. But be on the lookout for accommodation that goes a step beyond, like an interactive farm or an evening river cruise to count hippos.
  • Always bring your swimsuit : Swimming pools are a godsend in the afternoons, but not every camp in Africa will have one. Double check with your specialist if this will be a key to your family's happiness.
  • Factor in your kid's personality : What makes them tick? Would they love playing soccer with other kids in the village or doing arts and crafts? Picking vegetables for your next meal from the garden? Watching penguins play on the beach? The more you can tell your specialist about your family, the more it will feel personalized.

For elementary kids (ages 7-11)

For this age group, you can also look a little farther beyond traditional locations as they have more patience with travel and can start to enjoy the journey, and not just the destination. I would add these destinations to the list:

Kenya: I was born in Kenya, and it has a special place in my heart. Here, you can explore with a little more adventure in mind. Kenya's private conservancy options can take the conventional bush experience and personalize it to your family's day-to-day needs. Unlike national parks, conservancies and privately-run camps and lodges offer flexibility and more exclusive activities. Many of our favorite Kenyan lodges are owned and run by families raising their own kids in the bush.

Zambia: Are your kids keen on more intrepid adventures? The Zambia wildlife experience is incredible, and we recommend it as much for first time safari-goers as seasoned veterans. Although some of Zambia's open-air bushcamps won't be a fit for everyone, they pay off in offering uncrowded parts of the park in game-rich areas for travelers seeking that 'original' safari experience. And because it isn't as commercialized as other destinations in Africa, Zambia offers more value for your family safari budget than neighboring Botswana. Mix up game drives and walking safaris (for ages 12 and up) with some time in the Lower Zambezi for boating, fishing, and canoeing.

Zimbabwe : Somalisa Acacia has no age restrictions and offers tailored nature walks around camp with dedicated child specialists. Zimbabwe is home to five World Heritage sites, including Mana Pools National Park, Matobo Hills, the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, and Khami Ruins National Monument. Not to be missed among the five is stunning Victoria Falls. For kids and adults alike, the Elephant Express might just be a dream come true. If you have little ones who adore trains, this dual-engine single tram through Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park is a guaranteed delight.

For tweens & teens (ages 12+)

It's one thing to take "kids" on safari, and another to keep a brooding, smartphone-addicted teen or tween on safari and keep them excited about quality family time with little-to-no WiFi. These are some amazing activities that will keep you all captivated in the present moment.

Fly Camping : Sleeping in the bush under no more than a flysheet (traditionally a thin mesh fabric pitched like a rudimentary tent) may be old school, but it will never go out of style. No walls separating you from the great outdoors or the star-studded skies here. This is the ultimate escape.

ATV Quad Biking : Race across Botswana's lunar salt pans or cruise Namibia's desert-scapes in a rough-and-tumble 4×4. If your teen can't wait to get behind the wheel, here is their access across Africa's endless dramatic landscapes. Age restrictions vary by country and camp, though 16 is a common base age. In much of Botswana, ages 12+ are welcome to get behind the wheel of ATVs, provided they get the approval from camp management and parents.

Cultural Interactions : As your teens and tweens are learning about the world in school, safari for middle school and high schoolers can bring lessons to life. Some areas invite you to join in ancient traditions like leaping with Maasai warriors to compete for the highest jump, or learning the Samburu women's traditional methods of beautiful, vibrant beading.

Conservation Activities : A great treasure of going on African safari with your tweens and teenagers is the opportunity to engage in conservation education and activities, like pump runs in Hwange, Zimbabwe or going out with anti-poaching dog teams. If you are traveling with conservation-minded teens 16 and old who are ready for an experience that will leave an indelible mark, consider adding rhino darting to your safari.

The bottom line is, kids and adults of all ages can have a once-in-a-lifetime experience on a family safari in Africa together, but it takes expertise and careful planning. Transformative travel on African safari will inspire a passion for wild places while creating an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime adventure for the whole family .

Exciting Safari Activities and Crafts that Spark Joy in Preschoolers

I watched him roam around our backyard in his safari hat looking through his magnifying glass. He was on the hunt. We were working on letters, and the letters were hidden all around him.

“Mommy! I found the a!” He screamed excitedly. He brought it to me and put it with the other letters he found already.

We love getting up and moving to learn. Kids learn best through play , and it doesn’t get any more fun than going on your own safari adventure. There are many educational activities you can incorporate into a safari theme.

Giraffes Can’t Dance

Dramatic Play Adventures Preschoolers Love

Pretend play is essential for kids’ development. Develop your kids’ imaginations and invite your little explorers on a safari. Grab your safari hat, binoculars, and vest to be ready for your adventure. Look at animals through your binoculars, sit in a jeep (made out of a cardboard box), and imagine what you would see on the African Safari. Grab your favorite stuffed animals you may see on a safari to decorate your savannah.

Safari Large Motor Games for Preschoolers

  • Make a game out of these movements that encourage gross motor development by pathways.org. Have kids stand in a line and when you call out an animal, they must start to move like that animal. You can also make cards with these animals on them. Each child gets a turn to come up, pick a card and act like that animal.
  • Go on a lion hunt! Pick one child to be the lion and have them hide. Everyone else needs to grab their binoculars and sneak around the room until you see the lion. Once you spot him, run back to the safe space without being tagged. The child who gets tagged is the next lion.
  • A great way to review while getting kids up and moving is to make large paw prints out of different colored construction paper. On each paw, write a number or letter (you will want several paw prints with the same number/letters if you are playing with a group of kids). Spread your paw prints throughout the room on the floor. Call out a color, number, or letter. Each child has to find a paw print with that attribute and stand on it (or put one foot on it if they are sharing the paw.)

Fine Motor Skills Development

  • Color or paint the letter posters in our Alphabet Safari.
  • Make a banner by decorating the letters in your name and stringing them together (templates included in the Alphabet Safari)
  • This safari board game takes preschoolers on a fun adventure that helps them practice taking turns, learning facts about different animals, and developing hand-eye coordination

animal lineup safari preschool activities

Activities involving patterns, ordering, and counting are all important for early math skills. Using safari animals to practice these skills is a great way to do so through play! Here are some ideas:

  • Line up all the animals and then ask questions like “who is in the front?” “who is behind the elephant?”
  • Divide the animals evenly between you and your toddler. Put your animals in a pattern and then have your toddler copy the pattern.
  • Put all the animals in a pattern and then remove 2 or 3 from the line. Ask your toddler to put them in the correct place to complete the pattern.
  • Ask you toddler to group all the same animals together. Then ask them who has the most and least.
  • Count the animal groups.

safari cookies

Let’s make safari cookies! Sugar cookies are so fun to make with toddlers and they are so easy, too! Get some safari cookie cutters like these or these and make some adorable safari themed cookies. (We have the first set, which Little Miss loved, but they aren’t as durable as metal ones like the second set listed.)

Making sugar cookies allows our little ones to practice fine motor skills as they roll out the dough and cut the shapes. You can also use this time to talk more about animals and what color they are, what noises they make, etc.

map skills safari preschool activities

If you are looking for a nice, quick activity, this one has got you covered.

Show your toddler how they can line up the paper clips to figure out the distance between each animal. Talk about how many paper clips it takes to get from the giraffe to the hippo, hippo to elephant, and elephant to giraffe. Ask them questions such as, “Which one is the furthest? How do you know?” They may need some help to figure this out, but this is great for introducing them to early math skills! When you are done, let them make a paper clip train, just for fun!

diy binoculars

If you are going on a Safari, you want to see some animals! Make these cute and fun binoculars to see the animals with!

Using binoculars is a great way to practice coordination and motor skills. It also makes looking for things more fun! Use these for other activities throughout Safari month, such as looking for animals, letters, and more!

letter i letter recognition activity

“I” is for Ice Cream, of course! When you are on a Safari, it can get pretty hot, so you will need to stop for a cool snack. But you better eat fast or your ice cream will melt! Learn a new technique for painting and practice recognizing the letter “I” with this super sweet activity !

Kindergarten Spring Open House! {a safari themed adventure}

safari kindergarten route

Hi there and thanks so much for stopping by!  This past week we hosted our first spring kindergarten open house/round up!  It was so much fun and the kids really seemed to like “easing in” to the new school!  We always have a fall open house where the kiddos get to bring in their supplies and meet us.  However, it is usually so hectic we rarely get to socialize much and it’s pretty a fast faced  blurr.  For this spring open house/round up the kids were able to have the night be about them and get to choose where and what they wanted to do!

Once checked in and after getting their name tags…we gave each student a safari hat and they then got to take their picture in the safari jeep!   Adorable right?

I had placed these signs around the school to help direct parents on where to go! The lion’s den where were the kiddos go to explore with math manipulatives.  There were pattern teddy bear cards, pattern block puzzles, and more.  The students could move from station to station to explore!

What a great idea! How do you "recruit" people to attend? Does this take place in the evening?

We have a "transition visit" for our community students, but it happens during the school day. They visit a kindergarten classroom (with the K kids in the room) and listen to a story then participate in centers. After about 45 minutes in the K classroom, they have a snack in the cafeteria and experience the playground. We bus area preschool students and those not attending preschool are invited to come with their parents.

Do you have a good turn out? I like the idea of having different stations for them to visit. Thanks for sharing!

Amanda A Very Curious Class

Hi there Amanda! In the fall we have all new kindergartners come to meet us and bring in their supplies. We do this a few days before the first day of school! This spring we invited the students that will be attending our school in the fall to come! We have a district wide round up in April…that is how we knew who would be coming 🙂 Sorry I didn't really explain that part! We had about 40 of the 60 show up!

Good post and useful information. Thanks for sharing the Post Kindergarten school

My son attends this preschool, it is slightly higher in price but the difference in his excitement towards learning has changed tremendously in a positive manner. The teachers at Phoenix preschool are so warm and welcoming.

We are planning a Safari-themed Visitor’s Day so this post was just perfect! Thanks for the freebies. I’m feeling a lot more energized about our day after reading what you did. Many thanks!

What’s in the Box? Going on Safari

The new month is already here but with the holidays I’m a little behind posting What’s in the Box? Going on Safari. We’ve done this theme before but it’s been a while so I’m just as excited as my group is about our safari adventure. This post includes everything in the box for the Going on Safari theme from Mother Goose Time preschool curriculum.

Going on Safari Preschool Theme

Pack your bags, put on a hat and get ready for a big adventure to the African grasslands. In the Game Reserve you will see elephants, zebras and maybe even get kissed by a Giraffe. Wow! They have very long tongues. Learn about people who live in the great savannah. Celebrate their art, make necklaces, learn to drum and don’t forget to sleep under a mosquito net! If Africa seems far away, find your own safari in your backyard. Hunt for beetles in the grass, make your own shelter and relax in the shade. https://www.mothergoosetime.com/themes/

"Sessel-Safari": Eine abenteuerliche Turnstunde für den Kindergarten

Aktualisiert: 18. Okt. 2023

neben ihren eigenen Stuhl.

Was mag darin wohl sein?

Garden Route

The Garden Route winds an enchanting spell along the southern coast of South Africa, a delightful stretch of indigenous forest, sublime beaches, quaint towns, and dramatic nature. We love its accessibility and ease, although we're cautious of the Garden Route's nickname as Africa for beginners. We think it's a piece of Africa that will charm everyone.

Where is it?

Officially the Garden Route stretches from Mossel Bay to the Garden Route National Park, although great experiences fill the entire coastline from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. Both these cities have airports and a one-way self-drive trip is a great way to explore the 500 miles of coast. Most destinations straddle the perfectly-sealed N2 highway, making it really easy to hop along from place to place, without spending too long on the road. Keep your camera to hand though as the scenic contrasts make this one of Africa's great travel routes.

Things to do along the Garden Route.

Ever-popular Knysna is continually voted South Africa's prettiest town. Plettenberg Bay is as relaxed as it comes, while the town of Wilderness aptly reflects its name. Dramatic indigenous forest drops straight into the ocean in the Garden Route National Park, a place of excellent hiking trails and tranquil afternoons watching the passing dolphins. Take the coastal road and there are over a dozen villages and towns with great beaches. Drive the inland route over the mountain passes and you explore the scenic splendour of the Karoo, where ostrich roam besides vineyards.

What will you see during your journey?

Tucked away across the Garden Route are small private game reserves, giving you an easy safari experience. Most feature the full big five and like everything on the Garden Route, there's a focus on luxury accommodation and connecting with nature. This area has always been a getaway and the tourist infrastructure is amongst the best on the continent. While it's one of Africa's most popular regions, the diversity and profusion of destinations ensures that nowhere feels crowded; take a drive here and you'll soon learn that Africa and Europe have very different definitions of space.

This is a fantastic place to explore if you're keen on the freedom of having your own wheels. It's safe, there's almost too much to see and do, and we love the little hideaways we can tell you about along the Garden Route.

Buffelsdrift Game Lodge Erfahrungen

Essen Safari Lodge Gardenroute
