Jonas Vingegaard Excited For 2024 Tour de France Route

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard said he liked the route.

"I'm really excited about it. It looks super hard, at least the third week looks super hard. The climbs, certainly the high-altitude ones, look harder," said the 26-year-old, the peloton's most accomplished climber.

Asked who his rivals might be, the Jumbo leader said he hoped for a four-way struggle this year.

"There's Tadej (Pogacar) and myself and now Primoz (Roglic) has joined Bora so if all of us and Remco Evenepoel are here it will be challenging, with four of us," he said.

Mark Cavendish Goes For Record In Tour de France 2024

British rider Mark Cavendish will have as many as eight sprint stages but was downbeat on his chances of winning a record 35th stage.

"Honestly, I'm shocked at how hard this Tour de France is," said the Astana rider.

It will be the first time the race does not finish in Paris which is off limits as it prepares to host the Olympic Games.

The route, as spectacular as it is atypical, was revealed by Christian Prudhomme, president of the organisers ASO in front of almost 4,000 guests and many of the expected competitors, mayors from along the route and a large press pack at a conference centre in Paris.

route coupe tour de france

Tour de France Begins In Italy For First Time

The Florence start and Nice finish were already known. That had prompted excitement over not only the first ever Grand Depart in Italy, but the first ever finale outside Paris.

"It's difficult to replace Paris, so what better scenery could we give than a dazzling Monaco to Nice time-trial," said Prudhomme.

Nice mayor Christian Estrozi spoke of his Florentine ancestors and how historic the race route was.

"To be the town chosen to host what is likely to be the only final day that isn't in Paris, is a true honour and for me the fact it also begins in Florence is like a wink from destiny," said Estrozi.

Instead of the traditional last-day parade along the Champs Elysees, fans can instead anticipate a potentially decisive individual time trial along the Riviera coastline and over the hills between Monaco and Nice. It ends along the Promenade des Anglais in front of Nice's pebble beach.

The last stage evokes memories of the 1989 Tour, when American Greg LeMond started a rare final-day time trial 50 seconds behind French leader Laurent Fignon and ended up winning the race by eight seconds.

The Tour de France 2024 Climbs High, And Early

After the Florence start, the race takes in Rimini on the Adriatic coast before cutting across Italy via Bologna and Turin and into France over the Alps on stage four.

"The Tour has never climbed so high, so early," said Prudhomme. "The panoramas in the high Alps are just splendid."

Stage six will catch the eye of wine lovers as it takes in the "Route des Grands Crus" between Macon and Dijon while stage seven goes through the vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges in Burgundy.

There are a series of stages for the one-day specialists and for the sprinters, but the southern Alps will likely mark the start of the final battle for the yellow jersey.

The Tour de France Includes 59km Of Time Trials

A bigger than usual 59km total over the two time-trials will please the fast men such as Evenepoel or Roglic.

The seven mountain stages, which include four high-altitude finales, with the highest at 2,802m on stage 19, will be to the liking of defending champion Vingegaard.

After Troyes in the Champagne region the race swoops south-east toward Pau and the Pyrenees, then heads west through Nimes back to the Alps and then the mouthwatering finale on the Riviera.

route coupe tour de france

Women's Tour de France 2024

The route for the third edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift was officially unveiled in Paris before the men's route. This time around, the race schedule is a bit different, aligning with the organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The world's top female cyclists will kick off the event in Rotterdam on August 12th, marking the first time the Tour de France Femmes has started outside of France.

The race consists of eight stages covering a total distance of 946 kilometers. It will challenge a variety of riders, from sprinter-rouleurs to classic racers and accomplished climbers. The race will culminate at the Alpe d'Huez resort on August 18th, promising to be an exciting and diverse event, continuing the exploration of high-altitude summits following the conquest of the Pyrenees and Tourmalet in 2023.

Virtual L’Etape du Tour de France Series Announced

Eric Schlange

UPDATE March 26, 2024: in March, Zwift reconfigured these events to be rides with a results screen at the end, instead of standard races. They’ve told us this change was made to make the L’Etape du Tour events feel more like sportives than races.

L’Etape du Tour de France is one of the biggest amateur Gran Fondos in the world, with over 16,000 participants each year. Riders return year after year to take on a full Tour de France mountain stage, and Zwift has a history of working with L’Etape as a training partner.

This year, Zwift is hosting a creative and challenging Virtual L’Etape du Tour de France series which is sure to be very popular with riders. Whether you’re training for the IRL L’Etape or just looking to get some hard racing in, you’ll want to add these events to your calendar!

All the details for the series are below, although some links are not yet active and will be updated as Zwift updates their sites.

These are race events, not group rides. But there are no categories, so everyone will start together and ride together until gaps open up and packs form. Pace yourself accordingly!

ZwiftPower GC

You can treat these events as one-off races, competing in them whenever you’d like. However, some riders will compete for the time-based general classification, which ranks riders based on their total time for each stage.

Each month will have a GC competition on ZwiftPower (look under “Leagues”) based on that month’s Prologue and Main Stage events. There will also be an overall GC which includes all four months.

Climb of the Month: Col de la Couillole

This series takes a break in June for obvious reasons, but while we’re on break, the Climb of the Month in the Climb Portal will be Col de la Couillole, the final climb of the IRL L’Etape du Tour de France. At 15.7 kilometers with a rock-steady 7.1% gradient, this is also the finishing climb for stage 20 of the 2024 Tour de France!

L’Etape du Tour de France is already sold out for 2024, but you could win a spot!

Complete one Prologue ride and one Gran Fondo every month between February and April, and you will be entered for a chance to win a trip to participate in the L’Etape du Tour de France live. Read the terms and conditions >
