Ranthambore Safari

Jeep & Canter Safari Safari Booking

  • Wildlife Tour Packages
  • Travel Information

The jungle safari at Ranthambore National Park happens twice a day, every day, between the months of October and June and is a popular tourist attraction in Rajasthan. The wildlife safari is only permitted during the months of October-June and is not available on Wednesdays, as the park remains closed. Bookings for the Ranthambore safaris are handled by the Forest Department and are offered in two formats: Jeep Safari and Canter Safari. The Jeep Safari can accommodate up to 6 people, while the Canter Safari can hold up to 20 people at a time.

Although the Ranthambore’s Jeep Safari is slightly more expensive than the Canter, it is recommended by visitors who have experienced the wildlife of the park because it allows for more flexibility in movement and can access areas the Canter cannot.

The Safari lasts approximately 3 and a half hours and occurs twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening. Since these safaris are very popular, it’s advisable to book well in advance. The park also reserves a certain number of seats every morning for slots in the evening of that day and the following morning. You can book the seats for your safari online.

A Brief Insight into Ranthambore Tiger Reserve

Ranthambore National Park is among the foremost tiger reserves in the world that shelters the Bengal Tiger species. It is a favorite destination for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. Located in Sawai Madhopur, in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve has emerged as a renowned destination for wildlife tourism in India. Uniquely, the tigers here are active during the day, unlike most tigers that are typically nocturnal.

Given the substantial number of tigers that roam freely within the park, there’s a good chance of spotting one during a visit. These majestic creatures exist nonchalantly in the reserve, so if you’re keen on a close encounter, allowing you to observe them in all their grandeur, then a jungle safari is the way to go. Ranthambore National Park offers safaris for visitors eager to see the tigers in their natural habitat. In addition to the tigers, one might also encounter other wildlife such as leopards, hyenas, wild cats, reptiles, and a variety of birds that call Ranthambore home.

Best of Ranthambore’s Safari Zones

Ranthambore National Park is divided into ‘core areas’ and ‘buffer zones’. The ‘core areas’ are regions where tigers roam freely. To protect and support their habitat, deforestation and other commercial activities are prohibited in these areas. In contrast, ‘buffer zones’ are areas of the reserve where the land can be used by local people for farming or other purposes while still being managed for conservation by the government.

For visitor convenience, Ranthambore National Park is segmented into 10 zones for tiger sightings. Zones 1-5 constitute the core areas, while zones 6-10 are part of the buffer zone. Zones 3, 4, and 5 are particularly popular and preferred by many visitors. During the summer, tigers are more easily sighted in these zones due to the presence of lakes and other water bodies. These sites attract tigers and other animals looking to quench their thirst in the hot season.

Wildlife That Can Be Spotted During Ranthambore Jungle Safari

Being a tiger reserve, Ranthambore National Park has a large number of Tigers in its habitat. It also has other big cats such as-

  • Fishing Cat

Apart from the wild cats, the park has other wild animals as well, such as:

  • Indian Wild Boar
  • Hanuman Langurs
  • Sambar Deer
  • Spotted Deer
  • Indian Gazelle
  • Blue Bull or Nilgai

Ranthambore also has abundant reptile species as well, like:

  • Desert Monitor Lizards
  • Banded Kraits
  • Indian Pythons
  • Indian Flap Shelled Turtle
  • Russell’s Viper
  • Snub Nosed Marsh Crocodiles

The bird enthusiasts can indulge in a wholesome bird watching experience due to the variety of birds that are found here. Some of them include:

  • Woodpeckers
  • Greylag Goose
  • Asian Palm Swift

Ranthambore Safari Timings

Safari timings in the Ranthambore tiger reserve vary by season, so it’s best to confirm them before your visit-

Best Time for Ranthambore’s Jungle Safari

The best time to visit Ranthambore National Park is during the months of October to March since the weather is pleasant to travel. But it is during the months of April to June that you can see tigers more since they can be seen near the lakes and other water bodies to quench their thirst during the hot summer season.

  • Advance Booking: Ensure you book your Ranthambore safari well in advance. Due to its popularity, failing to do so might result in not getting your preferred zone, vehicle, or even a seat.
  • Multiple Safaris: Consider taking multiple safaris. This increases your chances of sighting a tiger, as sightings are influenced by both seasons and tiger movements.
  • Hydration: Bring plenty of water. A safari typically lasts around 3 and a half hours.
  • Binoculars: Given that animals might be distant, carrying binoculars can enhance your viewing experience.
  • Clothing: Opt for earthy-toned clothes like brown, green, and beige. These help you blend in with the surroundings. Avoid bright colors like red, which might make animals cautious and deter them from approaching.

Dos and Don’ts During the Safari

  • Protection: Carry sun hats, scarfs, and masks. The park’s climate is dry, and there can be considerable dust.
  • Behavior: Stay composed and calm. Always listen to your guide.
  • Feeding: Never feed the animals. They have ample food, and feeding them can be dangerous given their wild nature.
  • Littering: Avoid littering during your safari. Instead, dispose of waste at designated spots.
  • Vehicle Safety: Do not disembark from your vehicle and always remain seated.
  • Noise: Refrain from making loud noises or sounds. This could deter animals and hinder sightings.
  • Substances: Smoking and alcohol consumption are prohibited within the park’s premises.

RANTHAMBORE Half Day & Full Day Safari

Ranthamborehalf day & full day safari.

Recently the management of Ranthambore National Park has changed rules and regulation and now allow longer timed safari to a selected few numbers of vehicles that permits visitors to stay on safari. These are known as “Half Day” (for six hours) and “Full Day” (for twelve hours) safaris. Both safaris offer far more flexibility to visitors.

Half-day safari in Ranthambore

Visitors can now spend more time in the national park than the usual 3.30 hours by booking a half-day safari. Offers the opportunity to enter the entire park zone for free. Half-day tickets he is issued in two variations. 1) From sunrise to noon. or 2) from noon to sunset, up to 6 hours.

*Visitors will receive a safari breakfast/lunch pack

Full-day safari in Ranthambore

A visitor can now spend his day in the national park. A maximum of 5 jeeps are permitted in the park from sunrise to sunset, providing zone-free access throughout the park. This safari offers the best chance to see a wide variety of wildlife within the park.

*Visitors receive a packed breakfast and lunch and have a place and time to eat at the park

Advantages of Full day / Half day

MORE TIME - Spending more time in the park simply means more time tracking tigers and other wildlife. Throughout the day, visitor entry is allowed 15 minutes before the normal entry time, with an additional 15-minute time slot after the normal safari time. We all know how important extra time is. If you find a tiger before everyone arrives, you don't have to abandon an interesting topic just because the normal safari time is over. Minutes and hours matter.

Better Sighting Opportunities - With the extra time and zone-free access there are more sighting opportunities compared to a regular safari. As far as you know your Jeep may be the only Jeep at the moment.

No Route Restrictions - A regular safari requires you to travel along a pre-determined route. Even if you're confident that a particular route can be discovered, sometimes it can be frustrating to not be able to secure it. You can navigate to any zone of your choice and switch from one zone to another as many times as you like. This gives you complete freedom when spotting wildlife.

Hassle-Free - On regular safaris, it can be difficult to have a similar safari experience every safari as you get a different guide and driver each time. I have a naturalist. This is a huge advantage as they know your preferences, know your gear and take photos to help you plan your safaris and sightings.

Additional information:

  • All permits are issued by Ranthambore National Park, which reserves the right to approve or deny applications for a full/half-day safari.
  • Full-day/half-day permits (5 per day) are limited in number per day and must be requested in advance to guarantee entry.
  • Park management randomly appoints safari vehicles, drivers, and naturalists. The visitor, for an additional fee, he can choose from two. Please email [email protected] for additional costs and vehicle, driver, and naturalist availability.

The above benefits that these special safaris offer make these special safaris more flexible and productive. Visitors can spend more time among wildlife without being confined to fixed zones and can choose the best drivers, naturalists, and vehicles. In practice, this makes a big difference in the quality of the safari. Especially for photographers and visitors with a special interest.

Full day safari ranthambore.

Full-day and Half Day safaris discontinued at Ranthambore immediately effective October 2022. You can now opt for full-day safaris at Central Indian Parks- Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench and Tadoba. You can read more about full-day safaris at these parks  here Full-day/half-day safari option is now being offered at Ranthambore Tiger Reserve to visitors apart from regular day visit permits in 2020 as well. Under this scheme maximum of 5 jeeps are permitted to stay inside the forest from sunrise to sunset & are provided zone-free access across the entire park, of course, it does come at a cost.

Half-day Safari at Ranthambore

Visitors would now have the option to spend more time in the forest than on regular 3.30 hours shifts by booking a half-day safari. Half-day permits would be issued for 2 slots- sunrise to noon & 12 noon to sunrise for a maximum of 6 hours each.

Advantages of Full day

More time – More time in the park simply means more time to track tigers and other wildlife. We all know the importance of this extra time -no need to leave an interesting subject just because time is getting over for a normal safari. These extra minutes or hours become important because a lot of times animal movement happens early morning & late evening.

Better sighting opportunities- With additional time & zone-free access one has more sighting opportunities as compared to a regular safari. For all you know your jeep could be the only jeep at that spot.

No route restrictions -In a normal safari one has to travel on a preassigned route. At times when you are sure about a potential sighting on a given route you might not be able to secure the route, frustrating at times for sure. It is to be noted that one has access to areas open for tourism only.

No zone restriction – zone restrictions do not apply restriction is not applicable to visitors on full-day permits. No need to change the zone basis a good sighting in a previous safari, on a full-day/half-day tour you can move between zones. This means ultimate freedom & flexibility in tracking wildlife.

Hassle-free-  In a normal safari at most of the reserves you get a different guide & driver each time and it is sometimes difficult to have a similar safari experience on all safaris. In the case of full-day safaris, you have the same driver & naturalist accompanying you on all safaris. This definitely is a huge advantage-they know your preferences and have knowledge of your equipment and images made so far which helps in planning safaris and sightings.

More on full-day/half day

  • All permits are at the discretion of the forest department, field director has the right to cancel issued permits without prior intimation.
  • A limited number of full-day/half-day permits (5 per day) are issued for each day; one has to apply well in advance to ensure one.
  • Maximum 4 persons are allowed per jeep for full day/half day apart from Driver & guide.
  • As per the new format of full-day safaris-non tourism hours (time between regular safari slots) have to be spent in zones 6-10.
  • The cost of a full-day / half-day tiger safari is higher than a normal safari.
  • One would be allowed to choose a driver & guide of choice.
  • Multiple entries and exits are possible in full-day safaris.
  • Full-day safari permits once issued are non-refundable / non-cancellable and non-transferrable

The Ultimate Ranthambore National Park Safari Travel Guide

Home to over 60 tigers, the park is one of the best places in the world to see these magnificent creatures. The chances of seeing a tiger in Ranthambore National Park are quite good, especially if you take multiple safaris, but there’s plenty of other wildlife in the park including sloth bears, monkeys, deer, crocodiles and leopards. We were lucky enough to go on safari in Ranthambore 4 times in 2019, experiencing both canter and jeep/gypsy safaris, so have plenty of tips and information about visiting. Find out everything you need to know and our top tips for seeing tigers with this Ranthambore National Park Safari travel guide!

It’s not possible to stay inside Ranthambore National Park as accommodation and hotels aren’t allowed in order to protect the animals’ habitat, but check out our list of the best hotels and resorts nearby!

How to get to Ranthambore National Park

First up on our Ranthambore travel guide is how to get there. Sawai Madhopur is the closest city to Ranthambore National Park, which makes it the ideal place to stay when visiting the park. Thankfully the city has good public transport links with several major cities, so it’s both easy and relatively cheap to get there.

The best way to get to Ranthambore National Park is to take the train to Sawai Madhopur, with direct trains to the city running from Jaipur , Agra, Jodhpur , Delhi, Udaipur and more.

If you plan to take the train then it’s worth booking your tickets as soon as possible, as trains can sell out weeks in advance in India. There were a couple of times where we didn’t book trains early enough and had to rearrange our whole itinerary as a result – so learn from our mistakes!

Fortunately it’s easy to book train tickets to Sawai Madhopur online in advance through 12GoAsia, which is extremely useful as it’s not possible for non-Indian residents to buy tickets through the official Indian Railways website.

Although it’s potentially possible to get to Sawai Madhopur by bus, we would recommend travelling by train instead. Trains are only slightly more expensive and tend to be a lot more comfortable than the buses.

If you don’t have the time to spend a few days in Sawai Madhopur then an alternative is to take a day trip from Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park. It’s a long day taking a Ranthambore safari from Jaipur though, so we recommend staying for longer if you can make it work.

Best time to visit Ranthambore National Park

There is no definitive best time to visit Ranthambore National Park for your safari. Whatever time of year you visit there are no guarantees of what wildlife you will see, so a lot of it ends up being down to luck.

Two of the best months for seeing tigers in Ranthambore are May and June. During these months the average temperature is around 34-35 degrees Celsius with highs of around 40-41 degrees Celsius.

As a result of the heat, the tigers are seen more often as they need to come out from shelter to drink from the lakes and other water sources. This does give you a better chance of seeing the tigers, but also means you will have to put up with the intense heat yourself.

Zone 3 is particularly good to visit during the hotter months as it’s home to 3 lakes, including Padam Lake – the largest lake in Ranthambore National Park. With some luck it’s possible to see tigers and other animals drinking from the lake due to the heat.

Some of the beautiful scenery you can see on your Safari in Ranthambore travel guide - Padam Lake

It’s worth considering whether you really want to put up with such high temperatures before visiting in May or June. When Natalia first visited India back in 2014 she was in the country during May and June and said the heat was unbearable.

If you would prefer to visit when it’s a bit less hot then any time from November to April is good for visiting Ranthambore for a safari – just make sure to bring some slightly warmer clothes to avoid wind chill if you visit during the winter months.

Visiting during October isn’t normally recommended as it’s just after the monsoon season and so tiger sightings are less common as there is more water in the park. That being said, we visited in October and we saw tigers on 3 out of 4 safaris.

Realistically tiger sightings can happen at any time of year, you just need a bit of luck. If you spend long enough in the area and take multiple safaris then hopefully you should see a tiger no matter what time of year you visit!

Monsoon Season in Ranthambore

Traditionally Ranthambore National Park closes and stops safaris for the months of July, August and September due to the monsoon season and to avoid disturbing the tigers during their mating season. In recent years however, the park has only closed zones 1-5 during these months and have kept zones 6-10 open to tourists.

It’s best to search for up to date information regarding the opening and closure of zones within the park during these months, as there is no confirmation that zones 6-10 will remain open during the monsoon season every year.

It’s also worth noting that some zones, in particular 7 and 8, may be closed if the rain causes the roads in the zones to be unsuitable for driving.

Jeep vs Canter for Ranthambore National Park Safari

There are two different types of safaris you can take in Ranthambore National Park – a jeep safari or a canter safari. Jeep safaris are sometimes referred to as gypsy safaris, but it’s just a different name for exactly the same thing.

The difference between the two is the size of the vehicle and therefore the number of people on board. Jeeps seat a maximum of 6 people and are much smaller, whereas canters can seat up to 20 people and are significantly larger vehicles.

As part of our Ranthambore travel guide we would chose jeeps over canters.

This is because jeeps more comfortable with fewer people and are more mobile, meaning they can get to certain areas in Ranthambore the canters can’t.

On our first visit to Ranthambore we took a canter safari, but we didn’t enjoy the experience as much as we hoped – even though we saw a tiger within a few minutes of entering the national park!

A canter safari in Ranthambore

For our remaining 3 safaris we went in a jeep and found it to be a much better experience. The jeep safaris felt more personal as it’s easier for the guide and driver to point out wildlife to you.

In a canter the guide has to try and point out animals to 20 people at once, which can make it hard to see where you should be looking.

Jeep safaris in Ranthambore National Park do cost more than canter safaris, but the price difference isn’t too big. Considering it only costs slightly more to take a jeep safari we definitely think it’s worth spending a little bit extra for a better experience. If you’ve come all this way to go on a safari, why settle for second best?

A jeep which holds 6 people on safari in Ranthambore National Park which we recommend instead of a canter as part of this travel guide

The cost of a safari in Ranthambore National Park varies depending on how you decide to book. It is possible to book directly through the Forest Department of the Government of Rajasthan’s website, but the process is quite confusing and complicated.

If you book your visit to Ranthambore National Park through the government’s website then a canter safari costs approximately 1,428 rupees per person and a jeep safari costs approximately 1,698 rupees per person.

Alternatively, if you go through a 3rd party such as a tour operator or hotel then costs will vary but we paid 2,000 rupees each for a canter safari and 3,000 rupees each for a jeep safari.

Which zone is best for a Ranthambore National Park Safari?

Ranthambore National Park has a total of 10 zones, but it’s only possible to visit one zone per safari. There is much discussion over which zones are the best for seeing the famous Ranthambore tigers, with zones 1-5 generally seen as the best zones.

Although these zones are considered to be better, it’s still not possible to guarantee tiger sightings. It also doesn’t mean that you won’t see a tiger if you visit any of the zones 6-10.

The best zones to visit in Ranthambore National Park for a safari actually vary from day to day depending on sightings. If a tiger or tigers have been seen in any zone over the past few days then you generally have a better chance of seeing the a tiger in a zone with a recent sighting.

We do not recommend a particular zone over another in this Ranthambore travel guide as it really does depend where recent sightings of a tiger are for near to when you are visiting.

Our first tiger spotting on our safari in Ranthambore, walking through the forest with a prey in it's mouth

Depending on how far in advance you book your safari it isn’t always possible to specify what zone you’d like to visit in Ranthambore National Park. There are limits on the number of jeeps and canters in each zone, and so booking further in advance gives you the best chance of choosing your desired zone.

Safaris in Ranthambore are split into two time slots – morning safaris and afternoon safaris. Every day at 10am additional jeep and canter safaris go on sale for all zones for that afternoon and the following morning.

By booking a safari this way you’re able to take into account recent sightings and hopefully visit a zone that gives you the best chance of seeing a tiger. To do this we strongly recommend using a reliable local operator who knows the booking system.

We were lucky enough to find an extremely good operator who was able to get us safaris this way. He was able to get us one safari in zone 3, one in zone 4 and two in zone 6.

The operator kept up to date on recent sightings and prioritised getting us safaris in zones where tigers had been seen that morning, or in the last few days. As a result we saw tigers on 3 out of 4 safaris – which was extremely lucky as sightings are normally less common during October.

A common sight is deer on a safari in Ranthambore

In reality there is no ‘best zone’ in Ranthambore National Park, as it just depends on recent sightings and a bit of luck. We recommend using a quality local operator to book your safari when the additional slots become available.

As part of our Ranthambore travel guide we recommend staying in Sawai Madhopur and do a number of safaris during your stay. This gives you the best possible chance of seeing a tiger, and also means the operator has more chances to get you a safari in a zone with recent sightings.

If you want to book through the same operator as us then visit the Cultural Safari Tours website and contact them via email or whatsapp to arrange your Ranthambore safaris. They’re experts at what they do and helped us achieve our dream of seeing tigers in the wild!

Ranthambore Safari Times

Safaris in Ranthambore National Park are split into two time slots – morning safaris and afternoon safaris. The exact timings of the safaris depend on the time of year due to the variation in daylight hours.

A safari in Ranthambore National Park lasts for approximately 3-3½ hours in general. Morning safaris run from 6am to 10.30am depending on the time of year. Afternoon safaris run from either 2pm to 7pm depending on the time of year.

Click here for a breakdown of safari timings by exact dates!

It’s worth noting that when we did our canter safari we spent considerably less time inside Ranthambore National Park in comparison to our jeep safaris. We were in the park for less than 2 hours on our canter safari, whereas we spent around 3½ hours in the park for every jeep safari we did.

The longer you spend in the park, the better chance you have of seeing a tiger regardless of whether you visit in the morning or afternoon. In our opinion it’s definitely worth paying extra for a jeep safari to increase your chances of spotting tigers!

How to book a safari in Ranthambore National Park online

Booking a safari in Ranthambore National Park is relatively straightforward if you decide to book through a local tour operator or a third party such as Get Your Guide. As we’ve said above we recommend booking through Cultural Safari Tours as they are experienced in booking Ranthambore safaris and in our experience provide an excellent service.

The price will vary depending on who you book through but we paid 2,000 rupees per person for a canter safari and 3,000 rupees per person for a jeep safari. This price included all entrance fees, guide fees and vehicle fees, as well as return transport from our hotel in Sawai Madhopur to Ranthambore National Park.

If you want to book through Get Your Guide then they offer canter safaris for 2,000 rupees per person and shared jeep safaris for 2,500 rupees per person.

Click here to book a safari through Get Your Guide!

The sunlight hitting a tiger peering out in the grass

Although going through an operator like Get Your Guide is a good idea in many ways, you won’t have any say on what zone your safari is in. If you book through a local operator you have a bit more say about which zones you want to visit – although there is no guarantee you will actually get the zones you want anyway!

The final option is to book the safari yourself through the Forest Department of the Government of Rajasthan’s website. Doing it this way will work out cheaper, with the price for a Ranthambore safari in 2020 being approximately 1,428 rupees per person for a canter safari and 1,698 rupees per person for a jeep safari.

Unfortunately the website isn’t the easiest to navigate and we recommend paying the extra for the convenience of having it arranged for you.

Ranthambore Safari Tips

Take multiple safaris  – If you really want to see a tiger in Ranthambore National Park then we recommend doing multiple safaris as said before in this travel guide. Even though it’s one of the best places in the world to see tigers, sightings are by no means guaranteed. If you visit more than once you increase your chances of getting lucky!

After our first 3 safaris we weren’t sure whether to take a 4th, but we ended up having our closest encounter with a tiger on our 4th safari so it was well worth it. Even if you get lucky and see a tiger on your first safari, it can still be worth doing more safaris anyway!

Bring plenty of water  – Safaris in Ranthambore National Park last around 3½ hours from start to finish, so make sure you bring enough water with you – particularly if you’re visiting during the hotter months, such as May and June.

Get some binoculars  – If you want to get a good view of the tigers or animals then it’s worth bringing a pair of binoculars. In an ideal world you’ll have a great sighting of a tiger relatively close up, but in many cases the animals are often in the distance.

Out of the 3 tiger sightings we had, only one was close enough to see well with the naked eye. By bringing a pair of binoculars you should still get a relatively good view anyway, so it’s worth the investment. We recommend checking out Amazon to pick up a pair of binoculars if you don’t already have some!

Kingfisher in Ranthambore National Park

Buy a zoom lens – As we’ve said above, tigers and animals aren’t always close up when you see them on safari. If you want to get the best possible pictures then it’s worth buying a lens with a good zoom, as well as a good quality camera if you haven’t already got one.

We got a 70-300mm lens before we visited Ranthambore, and it helped us get some lovely pictures that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. There are plenty of great cameras and zoom lenses available on amazon –  click here to take a look for yourself!

Wear suitable clothes  – Check the forecast and wear appropriate clothes for the weather. During the warmer months you’ll want to wear light clothing for your safari, but during the winter months you may actually need some layers to keep you warm earlier or later in the day. It’s also a good idea to wear a hat for extra protection from the sun.

Use sun cream  – Make sure to put on sun cream to keep yourself protected, especially during the warmer months!

Mosquito repellent  – It’s also a good idea to use mosquito repellent to protect yourself against mosquito borne diseases especially for the evening safaris.

  • Ranthambore

Deriving its name from the pictorial fort inside, the Ranthambore National Park is one of India’s most renowned national parks. Located where the Aravali Range and plateau of the Vindhyas meet, Ranthambore National Park was once where the royals of Jaipur hunted. The national park is also considered a prominent heritage site due to the ancient ruins found inside.

The town of Sawai Madhopur is the gateway to the national park with a thriving biodiversity set among ancient religious structures, several man-made lakes and aesthetically-crumbling cenotaphs.

Although flanked by the Banas River to the north and the Chambal River to the south, the many lakes inside are not fed by either of the rivers’ waters. Having been declared a national park in 1980 with focus on protection of the endangered tiger, adjacent forests were merged with the Ranthambore National Park a little more than a decade later. The Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Kaldevi Sanctuary became part of the tiger reserve, making the national park at Ranthambore one of India’s largest.

You are bound to be enthralled to watch the splendid tiger roam about in its natural habitat, in the wild! Alternating between dry deciduous forests and swathes of grasslands, the Ranthambore National Park is recognised as one of the best places in the country to spot tigers. Today, sprawling across a little more than 1300 square kilometres including core and buffer area, the Ranthambore National Park is every wildlife enthusiast, photographer and a spirited traveller’s haven.

Among them are a few noteworthy ones that draw tourists year after year—The Hammir Wildlife Resort, Tiger Moon, Ranthambore Heritage Haveli, Abrar Palace and Jungle Camp and an array of options. Places to Visit in and Around Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore fort.

Ranthambore Fort

At the heart of the Ranthambore National Park is Ranthambore Fort, one of the oldest forts in India. Constructed in the year 944 AD, the fort situated on a hilltop offers possibly the best views of the tiger reserve. Bring along your binoculars to observe the activities of the animals from a distance. The circumference of Ranthambore Fort spans seven kilometres, and the fabulous quality of craftsmanship and interiors is sure to leave you transfixed.

Although built by a Chauhan warlord, Akbar, the famous Mughal emperor is said to have stayed in the fort as well. The fort is recognised as a World Heritage Site, and remains one of the most popular attractions in Ranthambore. The seven humongous gateways still stand to this day, and the crumbling ruins of Badal Mahal to the north is a sight to behold. However, the Trinetra Ganesh Temple inside the fort is what draws locals and tourists alike.

In 1300 AD, the final monarch of the Chauhan Empire named King Hammir built the temple with a three-eyed idol of Ganesh adorning the sanctum sanctorum. Hordes of Langurs hover around the temple, and travellers need to watch out for their belongings. Hammir Court in the fort is an acoustic marvel—where even the slightest of whispers from one end can be heard at the other! The Badal Mahal which means the palace of the clouds, stands on 84 columns. This magnificent gazebo is where King Hammir once held court.

Having changed hands several times, a Digambar Jain Temple, a dargah and a mosque are also constructed inside the fort. Gupt Ganga is the perpetual watercourse that flows at the log end of the Ranthambore Fort. A continuous series of rocky steps lead you till the watercourse and is an understated place to catch a sight of a large number of migratory birds. Although Langurs are fairly common, a leopard can catch you by surprise. It’s during these times that a binocular comes handy, and camera with powerful lens is bliss.

Padam Talao

Padam Talao

The largest of the three lakes in the park, Padam Talao gets its name from the large number of lotuses. Being one of the major watering holes of Ranthambore National Park, wild animals visit it during dusk and dawn. The legendary guesthouse Jogi Mahal lies on the lake’s fringes, and makes for frame-worthy photographs. The Jogi Mahal is said to be home to India’s second largest Banyan tree, which has been in existence for a staggering six centuries!

Originally constructed as one of the hunting lodges for the royal family of Jaipur, the forest guesthouse is now shut down and is swamped by neighbouring vegetation. To spot the rare Chinkara near the watering hole is an unforgettable experience. For wildlife lovers, the Padam Talao proffers the best of opportunities to observe the inhabitants of the national park.

Rajiv Gandhi Regional Museum of Natural History

Rajiv Gandhi Regional Museum of Natural History

A little more than 10 kilometres from Ranthambore National Park, the Rajiv Gandhi Regional Museum of Natural History is located in Sawai Madhopur. The 7.2-acre land on which the museum is situated was originally built to showcase the natural heritage, flora and fauna of the region.

Around five galleries in the Ranthambore museum are dedicated exclusively to display the biodiversity of Rajasthan, Biomes and Ecosystems, Desert, Ecology and Conservation and the Origin and Evolution of life. An interesting outing for the children awaits.

The museum remains closed on Mondays and other national holidays, throwing open its doors from 10 AM till 5 PM.

Kachida Valley

Kachida Valley

A Jeep is a preferred way to reach the valley, whose primary inhabitants are another of the big cats—panthers. Tigers form the apex of the food chain in the central areas of the park, and in order to avoid fatal territorial clashes, the panthers are compelled to stay away.

A majority of Ranthambore’s panthers are concentrated in the valley. Undulating low hills and a rocky terrain compliment fulfilling views of the valley, and a patient wait might just result in spotting a Sloth Bear. A good population of sloth bears makes Kachida Valley the best place to catch the reclusive giant in the wild.

Surwal Lake

Lakarda-Anantpura

Lakarda-Anantpura

The northern periphery of the park has an astonishing number of ant hills, and which the Sloth Bears have great fondness for. Sloth Bears are found here in large numbers, but due to their recluse nature of avoiding human attention, they are fairly hard to spot.

The Indian Striped Hyenas are another of Lakarda and Anantpura’s celebrated residents. Rarely spotted in the wild, their pugmarks are strewn across the area. The nocturnal hyenas make it nearly impossible to observe.

Other Things to Do in Ranthambore:

Black buck sightseeing.

Black Buck Sightseeing

This particular species of antelopes are exclusive to the Indian Subcontinent. Not found in the national park itself, Black Bucks inhabit the village of Devpura—approximately 15 kilometres away from the park. The rural region sees them clumped together in herds of up to 20.

You’ll be amazed outright to witness the Black Bucks sprinting at full speed, which is recorded to have exceeded 50 miles per hour! Driving down to the Devpura village is a great chance to experience the idyllic locales, and also to observe the vibrant Bandhani, Lahariya, silver jewellery, textiles and carpets woven by local artists. The vibrancy that Rajasthan is noted for, is on full display here.

Dastkar Ranthambore

Dastkar Ranthambore

In order to utilize the skills and talents of the displaced village-folk, Dastkar offers unique traditional handicrafts that are different from the rest of Rajasthan. The wildlife paintings are a treat for art aficionados, and other handicraft products make superb souvenirs of Ranthambore.

The regular Rajasthani artefacts are sold—Bandhani works, block-print textiles, handloom skirts and other jewellery are favourites of tourists in many of Ranthambore National Park’s bookings.

Ranthambore School of Art

Ranthambore School of Art

A little deviation off the road leading to the park takes you to Ranthambore School of Art. The backbone idea behind setting up this school was to instil the tiger in the popular psyche of the people. The Ranthambore School of Art sources its artworks from the students from surrounding villages and towns, and tries to convey the message of tiger conservation.

A trip to the school will welcome you into a world of tiger-oriented art, and this is where the experience of Ranthambore National Park comes full circle.

Rameshwar Ghat

The Banas and Chambal rivers meet 65 kilometres away from Sawai Madhopur at Rameshwar Ghat. The Chambal River has been declared as the National Chambal Sanctuary by the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

While you are at Asia’s only riverine eco-system sanctuary, be sure you visit the shrines of Lord Chaturbhuj Nath and Shiva on Rameshwar Ghat. Boasting of a rich biodiversity, the adjoining National Gharial Sanctuary has the Chital, Mongoose, Nilgai, Otter, Crocodile and a host of bird species for wildlife buffs. Additionally, the yearly Shivarathri fair draws thousands of people thronging Rameshwar Ghat.

Amreshwar Mahadeo Temple

One of the oldest Shiva temples around, the Amreshwar Mahadeo Temple is thought to be over 1200 years old. The dense vegetation around the temple caused it to be hidden away for a really long time, before it was discovered and turned hugely popular for the Shivarathri fairs held ever since.

Even today, one has to walk a kilometre before reaching the temple. Besides its historical and cultural significance, the region around the temple has grown to be a major tourist destination. A cascading waterfall and the marshy groves during monsoon have been popular attractions. An accidental sighting of one of the big cats should always be listed on your agenda.

Raj Bagh Talao

Raj Bagh Talao

The revered historical ruins of Ranthambore are scattered along the lake, due to which Raj Bagh Talao is considered the most picturesque of all the lakes. The dense vegetation blanketing the area summons a large population of birds and animals for respite from the heat.

The Sambar Deer and Egrets are regular visitors, while the area around the lake itself falls under one of the prime tiger spotting areas. Be on your toes while here, the big cats might just be around the bend.

Ranthambore National Park is famous for the tiger’s conservation and is an adobe to various fauna and birds and reptiles’ species of India. The park is distributed in 10 zones and each zone is captivated by the specific habitat. These safari zones are well maintained and are under the strict rules and regulations as advised by the authorities of conservation of the park.

  • Zones 1 to 5 will take you into the central part of the park and deeper areas of the jungle. The probability is quite high that you can spot the tigers playing with their cubs, drinking water off the lake, and running at a very high speed to catch their prey.

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

ranthambore full day safari

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow

Zelensky Says Preparing 'Plan' To End War With Russia

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday said he was drawing up a "comprehensive plan" for how Kyiv believes the war with Russia should end.

There are no public talks ongoing between Ukraine and Russia and based on public statements by Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two sides appear as far apart as ever when it comes to the terms of a potential peace settlement.

Zelensky hosted a major international summit in Switzerland earlier this month -- to which Russia was not invited -- to rally support for Ukraine's position.

"It is very important for us to show a plan to end the war that will be supported by the majority of the world," Zelensky said on Friday.

"This is the diplomatic route we are working on," he said at a press conference in Kyiv alongside Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar.

More than 90 countries sent leaders and senior officials to the two-day summit with Zelensky in Switzerland.

The vast majority of whom agreed to a final communique that stressed the need for Ukraine's "territorial integrity" to be respected in any settlement.

But some key countries that attended, like India, did not agree and others, like Russia's ally China, boycotted the summit in protest at Moscow not being invited.

Ukraine has repeatedly said Russia must pull its troops out of its internationally recognised territory, including the peninsula of Crimea that Moscow annexed in 2014, before peace talks can start.

Meanwhile Putin, who launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is demanding Ukraine effectively capitulate by evacuating even more territory across its east and south.

In Brussels on Thursday, Zelensky said he would put forward a "detailed plan" in a matter of months.

"We don't have too much time," he said, pointing to the high casualty rate amongst soldiers and civilians.

Russia's troops are slowly advancing on the battlefield, claiming to have seized another small frontline village on Friday.

They currently occupy around a fifth of Ukraine and in 2022 claimed to have annexed four more regions, none of which they fully controlled.

Ukraine relies on Western financial and military aid to push back the invading Russian forces, but its troops are outgunned, outmanned and exhausted after more than two years of fighting.
