What to Expect on Virgin Voyages Compared to Other Cruise Lines (Differences, What to Know, & More)

Never sailed on Virgin Voyages and not quite sure what to expect? Maybe you’ve seen the advertisements and weren’t sure exactly how it compared to other major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian.

Or maybe you saw that it was adults only and wanted to know more before you spend your hard-earned money on sailing a relatively new cruise line?

So what’s Virgin Voyages like? How is it different from other lines? And what else should you know before you sail? Below, we dive into these questions and give you the real scoop of everything about the cruise line.

How Is Virgin Voyages Different Than Other Cruise Lines?

Scarlet Lady docked in Miami.

Trying to explain all the differences between Virgin and more traditional cruise lines is a challenge. Put bluntly, there are a lot of changes both big and small.

Let’s start with being adults only. That actually means much more than simply there are no kids running around the ship.

Instead, everything about the cruise can be tailored to adult tastes. Entertainment on the ship is more mature, such as drag shows in the nightclub. Many events go on until later at night than on a normal cruise. The food offered is more adventurous and upscale (though traditional options are available). The amenities offered around the ship are also different. Instead of waterslides and putt-putt, it’s yoga classes, tattoo parlors, and fitness equipment.

Along with these changes, Virgin also seems to have taken a hard look at traditional things in cruising and made changes that will appeal to many. For instance, the cruise director, art auctions, and roving photographers are out. Instead of a buffet where everyone serves themselves, the cruise line offers a food hall with a number of spots to eat where food is either prepared as you order or plated for you if already made.

There’s no main dining room or formal night. Instead, Virgin Voyages has several different sit down restaurants that are all included with your fare. Gratuities are included in your fare as well, as is wi-fi service.

Bottom line: It’s much more of an all-inclusive feel on the ship, with more that aims to cater to adults that you simply wouldn’t find on other lines.

What’s Included on Virgin Voyages?

One of the big differences we mentioned above is that a number of items that are typically an extra charge on a cruise are included in your fare. Of course, your room, food, and entertainment on the ship are all included. But so are the following items:

  • All restaurants on the ship
  • Crewmember gratuities
  • Basic non-alcoholic drinks, including soda
  • Basic wi-fi
  • Fitness classes

What you will still have to pay out of pocket for are things like casino gambling, spa treatments, shore excursions, and alcoholic drinks. Still, between food, gratuities, and wi-fi alone, the included items add up to hundreds of dollars per passenger.

What’s the Crowd Like Onboard?

Pool on Scarlet Lady from Virgin Voyages

Step onto the ship and you’ll likely notice that your other passengers overall are a little different than on some other lines. Compared to most lines, we think that Virgin Voyages sees passengers that skew younger and a bit more fashionable.

One thing you don’t have to worry about is fitting in. While marketing for Virgin seems to focus on the “cool” factor with lots of beautiful and trendy people, there are all sorts of people on the ship — young, old, black, white, beautiful and not-so-beautiful, gay, straight.

Overall, the crowd seems very inclusive and everyone was friendly as you’d expect on a normal cruise.

Is There a Difference Between Ships?

Anyone who has sailed before knows that so much of your cruise is actually spent onboard the ship. In many ways, the ship is the actual main destination of your cruise, not the ports of call.

Typically there is a major difference between newer and older ships. However, since Virgin Voyages is still a new line, it only has three ships (with a fourth on the way). These vessels all have the same layout. So whether you are on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, or Resilient Lady, you’ll have a similar experience.

It also means you don’t have to worry about picking the right ship for your cruise. You really only have one option.

What’s the Atmosphere Like on the Ship?

que es virgin voyages

Every cruise line has its own personality, and Virgin Voyages is no different. In our view, the atmosphere definitely tends to be more modern and a bit more “cool” than what’s seen on other lines. If Instagram built a cruise ship, it might look a bit like Virgin.

There’s a lot of use of color (especially lights) to set the mood for different spaces — even down to the wake coming off the back of the ship.

Around the ship are lots of seating and daybeds built for two, which combined with the red you see everywhere, adds to the “sexiness” of the cruise ship.

In fact, we found that most often the atmosphere can change depending on time of day. During most of the day, the atmosphere seems to focus more on relaxation and wellness. There are yoga classes, the vibe is relaxed, and generally slow-paced.

In the late afternoon and evening, things change up a bit with the evening programming that’s more focused on entertainment and partying, including Scarlet Night when everything is doused in red light and the nightclub can go until 3 a.m.

One other note: Overall, we found the staff to be a step above what’s on other cruise lines. Generally any cruise staff is going to be upbeat and friendly. On Virgin Voyages, it simply seemed more genuine and as if the staff had a strong camaraderie between each other. It’s hard to explain, but it was a feeling of the staff being happy you were there.

What Are the Cabins Like?

que es virgin voyages

As you’d expect given the atmosphere on the ship, that “cool” factor extends to the cabin. You can expect the layout of the cruise cabin to be similar to other lines. You’ll have your bed, the bathroom, closet/storage, and balcony (with a hammock swing) if you choose that room type.

But cabins also have some upgraded touches. In a small (but loved) perk, Virgin offers a carafe of water and glasses. That means you don’t have to bring or buy bottles of water or drink out of the bathroom faucet just to get a swig of water in your cabin.

There are also some higher-end touches. In the cabin shower, there’s a rainfall showerhead included, instead of just the sprayer on the end of a wand. Your room is controlled by a tablet that acts as the remote control and can be used to dim lights, and even activate different colors to set the mood. Of course, if you don’t want to use the tablet, manual controls and a TV remote are also offered.

Bottom line: Much of the cabin will be familiar, but with some upgraded features that make it feel nicer than the average cruise room.

What Is The Band?

que es virgin voyages

If you’ve cruised before, it was likely on a line that has a credit card style room key that served to open your room, check you on and off the ship, and charge items to your onboard account.

On Virgin Voyages, you have “The Band” instead. This is a stylish little bracelet (complete with an anchor clasp) that holds a gray tag. This serves the same function as the room keycard. You swipe it on your door sign to unlock the room. It’s scanned when you come and go on the ship, and it’s scanned whenever you make a purchase onboard.

It’s a bit easier than having to dig out your card each time to need it, but it does have a tendency to want to come off occasionally.

What Sort of Entertainment Is There on the Ship?

que es virgin voyages

You’d expect that a ship focused on adults might have different entertainment, and in this case, you’re right.

First, the biggest difference we noticed is that Virgin doesn’t offer a traditional large theater that seats hundreds and hundreds at one time. Instead, they have smaller venues. As a result, there aren’t the big production shows like you see elsewhere.

Instead, the shows are more intimate in crowd size, but still feature amazing talent. One show we say was an acrobatic program between a red team and blue team that features climbing a 25-foot pole in the middle of the stage with no harness, flips after being launched in the air on a see-saw, juggling, and more.

Other shows included a mentalist and comedian with a quick-witted sense of humor that was able to make off-color jokes since everyone was adults. Virgin also had a resident drag queen with several performances during the cruise.

Are Drinks Included? How Much Do They Cost?

So much is included on your cruise, but one area that isn’t — alcoholic beverages. Virgin Voyages does charge for these, but there are a couple of things to know.

First, when it comes to cost the menu prices range from about $10-14 depending on the drink. We ordered some simple drinks (Moscow mule and a mojito) that were only $9. One nice thing is that because gratuity is included, the menu price is what you pay. There is no additional tip tacked on.

As well, Virgin doesn’t have drink packages. Instead they have a “Bar Tab” that’s credit toward drinks. Depending on your booking, you can get this included in your trip. During our cruise we booked and had $300 already included, so drinks were on the house.

How Does Food Work on the Cruise? Is it Good?

que es virgin voyages

One thing you’ll like about Virgin Voyages is that all food on the ship is included. There are no extra charges for some restaurants.

The dining onboard can be thought of in two groups. First, there is The Galley. While the ships don’t have buffets, The Galley is a large dining hall with a number of different stalls serving different foods. There’s a burger spot, a taco spot, ramen/noodle bar, a sushi area, salad area, dessert spot and more. All of these spots are either grab and go or you simply wait a few minutes while they prepare your meal.

Then there are a number of sit-down restaurants serving anything from upscale Mexican to Italian, steak, and more. These spots typically require reservations (though walk-ins are welcome) and fill up quickly. It’s your choice where to eat, and you can dine at whatever time you are able. There is no assigned seating or dining rooms like on many other cruise lines.

To us, the food was solid to very good. The Galley offers a lot of options, whether you want simple (burger and fries) to more adventurous (sushi, ramen). However, the sit-down restaurants are a step above. We especially enjoyed Pink Agave, the upscale Mexican restaurant where everything was phenomenal.

What’s Good About Cruising Virgin Voyages?

que es virgin voyages

There’s a lot that’s different about Virgin Voyages, and we think that’s what makes it a great cruise line to sail if you’re an adult looking for a getaway.

For one, we think the cruise line earns high marks in reinventing what a cruise can be. If you’re someone that’s been turned off by some of the “kitsch” in cruising, then cruising Virgin will be refreshing. There’s no line dancing on the pool deck or roving photographers or overly-excited cruise director.

As well, by including many things with the cruise, the headache of being nickeled and dimed around the ship is gone. Essentially the only things you’ll pay for onboard are alcohol, spa treatments, and gambling.

Finally, by catering to adults Virgin has shifted the design of everything from the ship to food to entertainment to more mature tastes that are more appealing to many.

What Are the Downsides of Cruising Virgin Voyages?

A crowded pool on a Virgin Voyages cruise ship

There’s a lot to like about Virgin, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. So what should you know that’s not so good?

Our biggest complaint is that the pool area seems small given the size of the ship. There are two pools, but the main pool only had seating for a couple of hundred people around it that seemed to fill up quickly when at sea.

As well, the reservation system for restaurants needs work. During our cruise we found that reservations were completely booked days in advance, yet when we went down to see if there was any space for walk-in, the restaurants had plenty of open tables. (We were seated immediately.)

We will also say that compared to other mass market lines with mega ships, there aren’t near as many things to do as you see elsewhere. For instance, there’s no roller coaster, go-kart track, zipline, rock-climbing wall or the like. That’s by design as these are largely included to appeal to kids and teens on the ship. However, if you’re someone that likes to be more active, you might be wanting more things to do.

Is Virgin Voyages Right for Me?

The Beach Club at Bimini

Having sailed the line recently, we think there is a lot for passengers to like about the cruise line no matter who you are. As mentioned, we saw all types on the ship from older couples to bachelorette parties. And the appeal is broad.

Overall, the crowd seems to skew younger — and more upscale — than most cruises. The atmosphere — ranging from the vibe on the ship to food to entertainment — definitely caters more to adult tastes. We think who would love the cruise line the most would be a couple from 30-60 years old celebrating an anniversary, special occasion, or simply wanting a romantic trip away. That, however, also casts too narrow a net as we saw all sorts having a great time.

In fact, outside of families, we have a hard time pinpointing who the cruise line wouldn’t appeal to. Personally we were worried that the cruise would be too trendy and cool for us to feel comfortable (there is a tattoo parlor onboard, after all), but that wasn’t the case at all. Instead, it was a great time with a lot of changes made to the traditional cruise to make it more appealing.

Así que, vamos a sumergirnos en lo que Virgin Voyages ofrece a sus pasajeros. ¿Qué es un crucero todo incluido? The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

The Best Cruise Lines

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

Sharks Are Attacking People At Record Levels At This Florida Beach

7 life-changing travel destinations in america, 8 things that don't exist in the caribbean.

Making the decision to travel in the open waters rather than booking an all-inclusive can be a hard decision to make. However, the toughest decision of them all is choosing the right cruise line that accommodates the entire family’s needs, dreams, and desires.

Some passengers may be interested in an exciting and invigorating cruise, filled to the brim with activities and excursions for themselves and their children, while others may be looking for a peaceful journey with no children in sight.

Both of these cruises are available. For example, Virgin Voyages is the first-ever adults-only cruise line fully equipped with a tattoo parlor and state-of-the-art gyms and saunas, while Royal Caribbean offers families a variety of Disney packages and Disney-only ships with a kiddie-corner for kids as young as six months old.

Take a look at the list below to help ease the burden in choosing the best cruise line.

25 Virgin: Cruise The Seas With The First Female Captain

In an already trendy and let’s face it, super cool cruise ship, Virgin Voyages has appointed their very first female captain to steer the beautiful Scarlet Lady. In addition to this momentous female empowerment movement, Captain Wendy Williams is also a Canadian.

30 Essential Virgin Voyages Tips You Need to Know For A Successful Sailing

Pinterest Hidden Image

When you sail with Virgin Voyages, you enter a world where cruising rules are redefined. While you may recognize some elements from traditional cruises, these Virgin Voyages tips will guide you through booking, preparing, and, as well as what to expect when you step aboard one of their distinctive ‘Lady Ships”.

We are seasoned cruisers, but sailing with Virgin Voyages felt almost like being first-time cruisers again. It was an experience, from booking the cruise to finding our way around the ship. We were proactive and booked our dining reservations 45 days in advance, which was important to us to be able to enjoy the fantastic dining experiences onboard. Also, connecting to the ship’s Wi-Fi as soon as we got to the terminal allowed us to quickly book our preferred ‘Shore Things’ with the sailor loot we had.

Table of Contents

Understand the Value of All-Inclusive Rates on Virgin Voyages

Don’t be discouraged by the initial rates; remember, it’s all included on a Virgin Voyages cruise. Most importantly, it will be an ADULT ONLY cruise. When booking my first cruise, I initially found the pricing confusing. Unlike other cruise lines, Virgin’s website shows rates based on double occupancy by default, but you can easily adjust this to ‘per person’ in the filter settings. More importantly, Virgin’s rates inclu de all dining, basic Wi-Fi, gratuities, and even fountain drinks, which are often extra costs on other cruises. When you consider these inclusions, the value of a Virgin Voyages cruise becomes clear.

Not included: alcoholic drinks, spa services, excursions, and some other premium upgrades.

Sofabeds in Standard Cabins

Virgin Voyages cruise ship cabin featuring a sofabed with white bedding, red and striped accent pillows, a side table, a desk area, and a closed curtain with a hint of the ocean view beyond.

Something that Virgin Voyages does differently—and which has sparked controversy—is using sofabeds instead of traditional beds in standard cabins. The only real beds are found in the Rockstar Suites. Although I initially hesitated, fearing that the sofabeds would be the least comfortable option at sea, the sofabed in our XL Sea Terrace cabin was surprisingly one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in.

However, sharing the cabin with two or more people can make the sofabed situation awkward. The bed is configured into an L-shape, which means you’ll have to sleep head-to-head, head-to-feet, or feet-to-feet with your cabin mate. A third cabin mate would fit in a bunk. It might surprise you, too, so it’s something to consider when planning who you’re cruising with.

Tip:  Before booking, consider pricing out two cabins instead of one. The cost difference is minimal and could make a huge difference in comfort and privacy, especially if you’re considering cramming into one cabin with multiple people.

Book with a First Mate For Extra Perks

First Mates are certified travel/cruise agents with Virgin Voyages. You can book a cruise online, but booking with a First Mate has benefits, including additional perks like Sailor Loot or cabin choices. Their rates will never be more than what you see on Virgin. Someone also acts as a liaison between the cruise line and you, so if you need to make changes, they contact Virgin for you.

Download the Virgin App

A hand holding a smartphone with the Virgin Voyages app open, displaying options like 'Event Line-up', 'Ship spaces', 'Shore Things', 'Guides', and 'Add-ons', with a laptop and a cup of coffee in the background.

Everything on Virgin Voyages operates through their app. Once you create an account with VV and book a cruise, it’s important to download the app. You’ll need it for various essential tasks: check-in, making reservations for dining, experiences, fitness classes, and even controlling the cabin lights. You’ll also receive all your notifications regarding the cruise on that app. So, don’t wait last minute to download it.

Be aware, though, that the app can sometimes be frustrating and sometimes requires patience. It works best on the ship. Despite any hiccups, it will be your primary tool for virtually everything on the ship.

VV Assigns Your Cabin After Booking

que es virgin voyages

When you book a cruise with Virgin Voyages, they’ll assign your cabin number afterward. You can find out your assigned cabin by checking the app or your online account. If the assigned cabin doesn’t meet your preferences, don’t worry—you can call Virgin’s customer service to request a change. If you booked through a travel agent (referred to as a First Mate by Virgin), they can handle the cabin selection or make the call for you.

Here’s a personal tip from our experience: When we first booked with Virgin, we were assigned an XL Sea Terrace cabin. After looking it up online, we realized it didn’t have a hammock, which we really wanted. We called customer service, and they happily changed our cabin for us. So, don’t hesitate to reach out if you need something different. If you booked with a First Mate, you’d contact them first.

Status Match for Extra Perks

If you carry loyalty status with another cruise line, take advantage of  Virgin Voyages’ status match program  to earn ‘Blue Extra’ perks and join their exclusive Sailor’s Club—even on your first or second cruise. This offer is only available until December 31, 2024.

Last year, we utilized our  MSC loyalty status  to obtain ‘Deep Blue Extras’ on our first Virgin cruise. Initially, we had to status match our Hilton Gold status with MSC. Once that was established, we submitted our MSC status to Virgin, and the process was surprisingly smooth. Sadly, Virgin stopped allowing status matches from MSC anymore.

Elevate Your Cruise Experience with the Splash of Romance Package

If you want a smoother start to your cruise, think about adding the Splash of Romance (SOR) package to your booking. With this package, you’ll board the ship right after Deep Blue Extras and Rockstars, which means you get extra time to enjoy the ship. This is a big plus if your check-in time is later, like 3:45 PM.

But the Splash of Romance package includes more than early boarding. You also get a 3-hour thermal spa pass and a bottle of champagne.

Please note:  The Splash of Romance package is an additional cost and limited availability, so be sure to add it to your reservation early.

Curious About RockStar But Think It’s Too Pricey? Try Bidding on an Upgrade

Cruising as a Rockstar or Mega-rockstar has its perks, but let’s be honest, it can be pretty pricey. If you’re feeling lucky, you can try to score an upgrade by submitting a bid for one of these swanky suites. It’s called a Level Upgrade, and while it’s not guaranteed you’ll win if you do, you’ll get to enjoy all those Rockstar benefits without the full price tag. It’s a great way to possibly elevate your experience without breaking the bank .

Check-in and Pick a Boarding Time as Soon as Possible

que es virgin voyages

The Virgin Voyages app lets you check in almost immediately after booking to secure the earliest boarding time at the port. Check-in for other cruise lines typically opens much closer to the departure date. We could check in months in advance, which streamlined our boarding process and got us started on our vacation without any delays. The earlier you get on the ship, the more time you have to start your cruise and get reservations for things.

Book Your Restaurant Reservations 45 Days Before Embarkation Day

For Virgin Voyages, the window to book your restaurant reservations opens 45 days before your embarkation day, right at midnight EST. If you’re a Rockstar, you get a little extra leeway with reservations opening 60 days prior. These slots fill up fast, so I recommend setting a reminder on your calendar to make reservations at 12:01 AM EST on the dot. This ensures you get the preferred dining times without the stress of finding out they’re already booked.

However, if everything is booked by the time you try, don’t worry. Once you get onboard, you’ll have another opportunity to make reservations. Just do this as soon as you embark, ideally on the first day. Afterward, walk-in options may become scarce, and you might have to settle for less convenient times. The effort to book early is well worth it—the food at the sit-down restaurants is outstanding and a highlight of Virgin’s cruise experience.

  • You can only reserve a restaurant once during a sailing of 6 nights or less.
  • Keep in mind that sit-down dinners do last about 2 hours.

VV Does Brunch

A brunch spread on a table featuring a dish featuring a baked frittata topped with greens and mushrooms, a side plate of crispy bacon, and a red bowl of fresh fruit including melon slices, berries, and pineapple.

Don’t miss out on a fantastic brunch experience aboard Virgin Voyages. The Wake and Razzle Dazzle both offer brunch throughout the week. We recommend booking a brunch on sea days when you can relax and enjoy your meal without a rush, or consider making it your grand finale with a final brunch on disembarkation day .

Follow the Ship’s Happenings Cast on Instagram

Each Lady Ship has a dedicated ‘Happenings Cast’ on Instagram, and we highly recommend following them. These crew members provide constant updates, activities, and fun around the ship. They’re a wealth of tips and knowledge that can greatly enhance your experience aboard by giving you insider info and highlighting can’t-miss events and activities.

What to Pack for Virgin Voyages

While our general cruise packing list is always a good starting point, there are a few Virgin-specific items you’ll definitely want to bring along:

  • Refillable Water Bottle:  Virgin Voyages does not provide disposable water bottles on board. They highly recommend bringing a refillable water bottle as plenty of water stations are around the ship, and you can always ask for water at the bars.
  • USB-C Wall Plug-in:  The cabins are well-equipped with electrical and USB-A ports but lack USB-C ports. A charging port will be necessary if your devices require this type of connection.
  • Hanging Toiletry Bag: Another item we highly recommend, especially if you’re staying in a Sea Terrace, is a hanging toiletry bag. The bathrooms can be a bit cramped, with limited storage and shelving, so having a hanging toiletry bag will keep your essentials organized and easily accessible.
  • Pajamas for the Pajama Party: Pack a pair of pajamas or comfy loungewear that you love for the Pajama Party on the first night.
  • 80’s VHS Fitness Class Outfit:  For a blast from the past, pack an 80’s themed workout outfit for the 80’s VHS fitness class. It’s a fun way to sweat it out with some nostalgic flair.
  • A Red Outfit for Scarlet Night:  Scarlet Night is a signature event on Virgin Voyages, so bring a red outfit or at least a flash of red to join in the fun.
  • Gold Outfit for “We Fancy” Night:  Not all itineraries include a “We Fancy” night, but if yours does, a gold outfit or a fun gold accessory will have you fitting right in.

No Need to Print Luggage Tags

One cool thing about Virgin Voyages is that you don’t have to fuss with printing out luggage tags before you sail. Just show up at the cruise port, pull up your cabin number on the Virgin Voyages app, and hand it over to a porter. They’ll sort out your luggage tags right there. It’s easy and one less thing to worry about before departing.

Just a heads-up:  The porters aren’t Virgin employees, so they will probably expect a tip for their help. A small tip can go a long way toward ensuring your luggage is well cared for.

Boarding Process: What to Expect

que es virgin voyages

Boarding with Virgin Voyages doesn’t start until around 2 PM, and they are strict about adhering to scheduled times. Priority boarding is given in stages: Rockstars are first, followed by passengers with Deep Blue Extras (DBE), and then those with a Splash of Romance (SOR) before general boarding begins. If your check-in time is later, say 3 PM, and you arrive early at noon, expect to be asked to return closer to your designated time or stand in line at the designated boarding time and wait.

We recommend arriving about 30 minutes before your scheduled check-in time. If you’re a Rockstar, DBE, or SOR, you might find that the time listed on the app isn’t accurate—you can and should arrive earlier, around 1 PM since you have priority boarding privileges.

Once they let you in, you’ll go through security and check in with a rep who will hand you a band for onboard charges. Then, you’ll be on your way to the terminal to await boarding. Boarding is called by groups, starting with Rockstars.

Goodbye Cruise Cards, Hello Bands

Two wrists close together, each wearing a red Virgin Voyages Band, against a tiled floor background. The bands replace traditional cruise cards for onboard transactions and cabin access.

Virgin Voyages has ditched the old-school cruise cards and switched to super convenient bands. These wristbands act as your keycard for everything onboard, making it easy to keep everything you need literally on hand. We loved the convenience of not having to dig around for a card.

You can recycle the bands at the end of your cruise, but I hung onto mine as a keepsake from my first Virgin cruise. It’s a neat little reminder of a great cruise.

Book Shore Things 120 Days in Advance

Inside the Scarlet Lady ship by Virgin Voyages, a vibrant red desk labeled "SHORE THINGS" for excursion planning and booking, with large windows overlooking the ocean in the background.

Got your heart set on a specific shore excursion? The most popular ones can fill up quickly. You can start booking Shore Things 120 days in advance if you’re a Rockstar 145 days.

If you want to use Sailor Loot, you have to wait until you’re connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi. When we entered the cruise terminal, we connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi because we were eager to book the “Swimming with Sharks in Bimini” excursion. The morning tour was already booked, but we got the afternoon tour.

Have trouble with the app? Head to the Shore Things desk as soon as you board deck 7.

Book Popular Activities and Entertainment Upon Boarding

As soon as you step on board, one of the first things you should do is book all the popular activities and entertainment you’re interested in, whether included in your cruise fare or require an additional fee. This is a key reason to get on the ship as early as possible. Many of Virgin Voyages’ venues are relatively small, meaning they fill up quickly. Securing your spot immediately ensures you won’t miss out on any fun or experiences you’re looking forward to during your cruise.

No Drink Packages, But There Are Bar Tabs

a popcorn machine filled with bags of popcorn ready to grab and go.

Don’t look for a drink package on Virgin Voyages; they don’t offer them. Instead, alcoholic beverages are sold a la carte, meaning you pay for each drink as you go. But here’s a cool tip: you can set up a Bar Tab before you board. If you load $300 onto your Bar Tab, Virgin throws in an extra $50. It’s non-refundable, so you lose it if you don’t finish it on the ship. If you don’t opt for a Bar Tab, any drinks you buy will be charged to your cruise account or deducted from your Sailor Loot.

Come as You Are Dress Code on Virgin

Virgin Voyages takes the whole “Freestyle Cruising” thing to a new level. There aren’t any strict dress codes, and they ask that you skip the swimsuit at dinner. They’ve got some fun theme nights, like Scarlet Lady, but joining in is totally up to you. You can dress how you like and focus on having a good time. It’s all about being yourself and enjoying the ride, so packing should be a breeze.

While the ship had a relaxed vibe, I thought everyone was pretty well dressed at night at dinner.

Fitness Classes Are Included

Unlike most cruise lines that charge extra for fitness classes, Virgin Voyages includes them in your cruise fare. If staying active is part of your cruise goals, you’re in the right place. You can join as many classes as you like without worrying about additional fees. Just remember to book them as soon as you board because they can fill up quickly. Walk-ins might be an option since sometimes people don’t show up at the last minute, but it’s not guaranteed.

Important Note: If you book a class and fail to show up without canceling, Virgin Voyages will charge a $10 no-show fee to your account, which they donate to charity.

Also, it’s worth noting that you won’t find typical frozen drinks like mudslides on the ship. Virgin Voyages offers a variety of crafted cocktails, which are a step up from the usual cruise drink fare. This is perfect for those looking to try something a bit more sophisticated and unique.

You May Want to Upgrade to Premium Wi-Fi

If you need a reliable and fast internet connection, consider upgrading to Premium Wi-Fi onboard. The basic Wi-Fi was a bit sluggish for us, so we switched to the premium option, and it made a world of difference. It’s worth it, especially if you need to stay connected for work, streaming, or just sharing your cruise moments on the go. When we sailed, the upgrade cost was $99 for the five-night cruise.

Be Food Adventurous

An assortment of small Korean BBQ bites, including kimchi and seasoned vegetables, arranged around a circular cooking station on Virgin Voyages

The food on Virgin Voyages is some of the best we’ve had at sea—perfect for foodies and anyone who loves good eats. Their food is generally creatively fun, high quality, and gourmet. Sure, they’ve covered the basics with pizza, hot dogs, and sandwiches for those who like to stick to what they know. But if you stick only to those, you’re missing out. On our cruise, we saw too many people looking skeptically at other folks’ plates or sitting in The Wake for brunch, wishing for something a basic Grand Slam Breakfast (they can go to Diner-and-Dash at the Galley for that). Remember, you’re not at Denny’s. Virgin Voyages offers unique, delicious options that are well worth trying. So try something different—you might fall in love with it!

Avoid Lines at The Galley, Raise the Flag

A hand is turning up the red “AHOY” service flag at The Galley on Virgin Voyages, indicating the call for a server, with the dining area visible in the background.

The Galley on Virgin Voyages isn’t your typical cruise buffet—it’s a food court where you can skip the lines. One of the coolest features is the ability to raise a flag at your table when you’re ready to order. You don’t have to queue up unless you grab something quick, like a dessert or a bento box. Standing in line to order isn’t unnecessary and adds to the crowd. Try to avoid it.

Every time we raised the flag at our table in The Galley, servers quickly took our orders, and our food arrived shortly after. It’s a great way to enjoy your meal without the hassle.

Foodie Tid Bits You Should Know: Diner & Dash in the Galley is your all-American diner, open 24/7 on the ship. And to-go, boxes of snacks are always available at the entrance of The Galley and at The Dockhouse exit.

Navigating the Lady Ships

All Lady Ships by Virgin Voyages share a similar design, but getting around isn’t always intuitive. Reviewing the ship’s deck plans before you set sail to save time otherwise spent wandering is wise. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate the key areas:

  • Sailor Services: Located on Deck 5 Mid-Ship for all your assistance needs.
  • Shore Things & My Next Virgin Voyage: Find these on Deck 7 to plan excursions and future trips.
  • Main Connector to Lower Decks: To move between decks 6, 5, or 4, head to Deck 7. From here, it’s the most direct route to those lower decks.
  • Social Hubs: Deck 7 has bars and eateries, such as the Pizza Palace, Ice Cream, and Grounds Club.
  • The Galley: Visit Deck 15 Aft.
  • The Manor Entrance: Surprisingly located within the Casino on Deck 6.

Make it a Movie Night in Your Cabin

a popcorn machine filled with bags of popcorn ready to grab and go.

Who doesn’t love a good movie night? On Virgin Voyages, movies are free and included with your cruise fare, and there’s a huge selection to choose from—everything from classic films to the latest blockbusters. For the full experience, swing by the Social Club to grab some freshly popped popcorn, or hit The Pizza Palace for a slice or two (or maybe even both). Then head back to your cabin for a cozy night in.

Join in on Theme Nights and Events—You Might Be Surprised

scarlet night pool party on scarlet lady

If you’re on the fence about joining in on Virgin Voyages’ theme nights and events, give it a shot—you might be pleasantly surprised! As someone who usually keeps to myself, I decided to dive into the fun during Scarlet Night by dressing up in red and heading to the pool party. It turned out to be a blast! Participating can enhance your cruise experience, giving you memorable moments and maybe even helping you make new friends.

Don’t Debark Without Purchasing My Next Virgin Voyage

The My Next Virgin Voyage (MYNV) program is a step up from typical cruise vouchers. It acts as a placeholder for your next cruise, locking in whatever promotional offer they have onboard that week. Here’s how it worked for us: On our last Virgin cruise, we put down $300 towards MYNV, which guaranteed us $600 in sailor loot for our next cruise if we booked within the next two months. Plus, the $300 went towards our deposit. Remember, if you book after those two months, the sailor loot drops to $300.

You can purchase this directly from the My Next Virgin Voyages desk on Deck 7 or through the Virgin App. You’ll need to provide a credit card when buying it, but it won’t be charged to your onboard account. We chose to buy ours at the desk because they provided immediate answers to all our questions and even gave us a PDF of all upcoming cruise itineraries to help us plan our next adventure. However, purchasing through the app is convenient if you know what you want.

You Can Debark the Ship as Late as 10:30 AM

No early morning rush to leave the ship here. Virgin Voyages lets you debark as late as 10:30 AM. That means you can enjoy a leisurely brunch before you say goodbye to the ship—just remember to book it early in the week to get a spot.

Debarkation on Virgin isn’t much different from other cruise lines, apart from the more relaxed check-out time. You can carry your own luggage off early with the self-assist group or pick a debarkation time slot under ‘Shore Things’ in the app a couple of days before the end of the cruise. If you’re not carrying it off yourself, just make sure your luggage is outside your cabin by 10:30 PM the night before.

We went for a later debarkation and kept our luggage with us, which meant we could sleep in a bit on that last day.

Virgin’s Website is a Wealth of Knowledge

I’ve found that Virgin Voyages’ website is way ahead of the curve compared to other cruise lines. It’s packed with answers to almost all your FAQs, plus loads of tips and insights about cruising with them. They even have some cool videos that give you cabin hacks and other handy cruising tips. It’s totally worth taking a bit of time to dive into their site. Also, don’t forget to follow them on social media for the latest updates and some extra tidbits.

Richard Branson’s cruise line is creating new on-land excursions — just epic enough to make you want to set sail.

The Scarlet Lady is one of four Virgin branded cruise ships.

On a recent Tuesday in May, three neither rich nor famous ladies are running full-tilt through the streets of Cannes, France, past the star-studded red carpet during the opening of its 77th annual film festival. In just a few hours, Meryl Streep will arrive to receive her Honorary Palme d'Or prize. And the latest films from legends like Francis Ford Coppola, George Miller and Kevin Costner will have their world premieres.

Meanwhile, we three amigos are dodging the French police, skirting a wall of metal barricades, and elbowing through a crush of paparazzi snapping photos — of everyone but us.

“If you fall, I’m not carrying you back to the boat!” shouts my ship-mate Jo, as her flip-flops smack the pavement. “I’m not going to fall!” I shout back, gaining speed despite being in a somewhat sozzled state courtesy of the iconic Carlton Cannes hotel — a truly wonderful spot to witness Hollywood royalty roll by sur La Croisette. But that’s beside the point. We’ve got to get back to the floating resort called Scarlet Lady before we’re left stranded on the French Riviera without her 20 restaurants, two outdoor pools, full-service spa, fitness center and our own Mega Rock Star cabin with an ocean-facing balcony, fully stocked bar and dedicated butler.

The Rock Star robe confers cabin status.

In my defense, being deposited on shore during the Cannes film festival is really THE time to wear impossibly high heels if there ever was one. Because being dressed for the unexpected, spontaneous bursts of joy that just happen-to-happen before, during, or after an on-land excursion is, in my humble opinion, the entire point of cruising in the first place.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

For better or worse, cruising is back. Carnival , Norwegian and Royal Caribbean all reported entering the year with record highs for individual bookings and cruise pricing. Though Virgin Voyages is a relatively small player in the mega-ship space with only three ships in operation (its fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, will set sail September 2025 from New York City), the company is leaning heavily into its “ Shore Things ” excursions. Exclusive or novel on-land tours are a clear way to differentiate their product offerings and increase bookings. Having recently raised $550 million from investors , the pressure to do so is high.

On average, only 30% of Virgin sailors book tours according to Shore Things manager Ali Samms, which means there’s room to grow. Of course, others are doing the same ; evermore elaborate excursions are becoming table-stakes for the industry.

“We usually offer 15 to 20 tours per port, at varying price points,” Natasha Salzedo, Virgin Voyages Director of Itineraries and Destinations, explains. “Everyone has different expectations, so I’m hoping we can find something everyone can connect with and really delve into the destination. ‘Off the beaten path’ means something a little different for everybody, but really being able to uncover hidden gems that a sailor would have never known about or weren’t able to experience before — that’s the idea.”

This summer and into the fall, Scarlet Lady is sailing seven-night Mediterranean itineraries out of Barcelona dubbed “ Irresistible Med ” and “ French Daze & Ibiza Nights .” Choosing the latter, I convinced Jo, my friend of 28 years, who, like me, gave birth in the dire circumstances of 2020, to celebrate this Mother’s Day by going all-in and signing up for excursions in every possible port of call, including Marseilles, Cannes, Mallorca and Ibiza. To us, the prospect of a whole week without wiping noses or soothing toddler tantrums is like telling us we’re about to be beamed to the moon. We don’t believe it until…

A massive 912-foot honker, emblazoned with the scantily-clad Scarlet mermaid, presents herself in the middle of Barcelona’s busy port. The high seas await!

Sip Lounge Champagne Bar

We’re welcomed onboard with champagne flutes and ushered into a swanky lounge bar, where we’re checked-in to our Tom Dixon-designed RockStar suite, complete with vinyl record player and adjustable mood lighting. There are 1,330 cabins and 78 RockStar quarters aboard the Scarlet Lady, where we expect to receive “RockStar” treatment.

Which is fitting, as this is a very Branson boat. Meaning, it’s an adults-only party staffed by omnipresent DJs. There are solo traveler itineraries, with plenty of opportunities for singles to coagulate. And, on Scarlet Night, the week’s biggest party, people end up dancing in the pool with hired dancers and drag queens. Here are the highlights:

Cassis, France

MARSEILLE | DAY 2

The Calanques Coast by Boat and Foot

At first glance, Marseille is massive, gritty and chaotic. But as our tour bus heads east down the highway, the busy port soon gives way to the vineyards of Cassis, a cheerfully-colored seaside town, famous for its dramatic cliffs and crisp rosé wine. We admire the hand-painted boats along the docks until it's time to get in one, a small sightseeing charter, which takes us out for a close-up look at Les Calanques — a dramatic coastline of powder-white limestone cliffs, covered in tall, thin pine trees that grow straight up from the rocks, and seem to peer over the azure bays below.

Our Franglish-speaking tour guide, Audrey, grew up outside Marseille, and provides us with a basic overview of each place-of-interest. She points out Port-Miou, a natural cove with its own small, sandy beach, though evidently it would be too cold (in May), or too time-consuming for our group to stop and swim. So, we head back to Cassis, and are left with under two hours “at leisure.” At this point, we’re starving, so four of us take the boat captain’s advice and head to La Vieille Auberge , one of many French bistros along the harbor. “Go there, not there” he grunts through leathery-tan skin. “Next door, people get sick.” Like they say, locals know best. It’s touristy, but we don’t care, because the tuna tartare is fresh, the Sancerre is flowing and the daube provençale (beef bourguignon) is served in its own copper pot. We’re in France mes amis , let the gourmet games begin!

Welcome to the Carlton Cannes hotel, the icon of the French Riviera

CANNES | DAY 3

Red, White, & Rosé Days

Bright and early (around 9am cruise time) we’re speeding towards the shore in a small tender boat, chatting away with a serial-cruising couple from Dallas, when suddenly the Cannes coastline unfurls before our eyes. The buildings look pink, nestled into hillside cliffs, gently waking up with the morning sun. La Côte D’Azur.

Firmly on land, our guide Sandrine from Nice shepherds us into a bus, which drives (painfully) away from Cannes, just as it prepares for its film festival close-up. Alas, we have no choice. This is a group tour, which require a go-with-the-flow mentality, so we hurtle along the coast past Pierre Cardin’s bizarre bubble house, the stunning red rocks of Cap Roux and through the Provençal countryside towards Taradeau, grounds of Château Saint-Martin , which dates back to 1740. The cellar tour and wine tasting is an opportunity to socialize with other sailors. After the third pour of light and fruity Eternelle Favorite rosé, everyone is sharing their experiences and feeling appreciative of the thirsty 18th-century monks who originally made this place a wine-making priory. Their stone cellar is still in use.

By 2:30pm, we’re deposited back in Cannes, with the caveat that we must return to the boat by 7:30pm. That’s five glorious hours to be here on this night of nights, when the whole city comes alive with excitement. Women are decked out to the nines with the GDPs of small nations hanging on their necks. We scurry along the Croisette to the Carlton Cannes hotel because we cliché Americans are still in love with the 1995 movie French Kiss . Remember when Meg Ryan pratfalls over the dessert tray? This is that hotel. There’s zero chance we’re getting a table. But we have to try. I give the doorman my warmest smile, and the next thing you know, we’re escorted past a lobby press conference and a bright-eyed bartender is asking how we like our martinis. Clean with ice cold Tanqueray in a coupe glass, merci .

A stop at Son Marroig, outside Deià, a magical village in Mallorca.

PALMA DE MALLORCA | DAY 5

Culture in Valldemossa and Lunch in Deià

After Cannes, it’s a blessing that we have a day in-between excursions at sea. These are days to rest, exercise, play, work (the free-wifi actually works thanks to Starlink), and then try not to overeat — all food is included in your ticket price — on this floating party resort. The reprieve gives us the energy we’ll need for what happens today: our first-ever visit to Mallorca, which rises from the Balearic sea like a Moorish dream. The word that comes to mind is: exquisite.

Our official Mallorcan guide, Dominik Gelada Rabiger deserves a mention, because he gives the best tour yet. On group jaunts like these, the quality of your experience depends almost entirely on the guide. Rabiger was born and raised here, speaks English, German and Spanish, and knows everything there is to know about this island. On the bus ride through the Tramuntana mountains to Valldemossa, he regales us with the island’s history (Mallorca switched between Roman, Byzantine, and Moor rule before becoming the autonomous region of Spain it is today). Next, we tour the grand old monastery La Cartuja, once home to kings, monks, and the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and his French mistress, novelist Amantine Dupin (1804-1876), who used the pseudonym George Sand. Frankly, the town is really milking the couple’s three months here, when Chopin was quarantined with tuberculosis, for all the tourist dollars it can — but we don’t mind. We’re treated to a 15-minute piano recital in the concert hall, which occurs eight times daily in summer, and then emerge to a sunny afternoon, free to buy cutesy souvenirs like these Spanish espadrilles .

Our next stop solidifies my stance: great excursions can justify a cruise. An al fresco lunch overlooking the sea has been organized in Deià, at La Residencia, a Belmond hotel . If you follow luxury hotels, you know Belmond is one of the world’s best brands, and this particular property — formerly owned in the 1980s by Richard Branson himself (word is he’s been trying to buy it back ever since) — is everything a hotel lover could ask for, starting with the stone entrance. To get to lunch, we hike the pavers up to Restaurante Miro’s terrace, past lush landscaping overflowing with lavender, lemon trees, olive trees and the seductive scent of white jasmine.

The tables are beautifully set with local wines (read: unavailable back home), homemade breads, and plenty of Mallorcan olives and olive oil. Salads are a mix of tomato and mozzarella full of Jabugo ham from pure-bred Ibérico pigs dressed in balsamic cream, followed by beef tenderloin with potato gnocchi in a red wine sauce. We wash it all down with a Raimat cabernet , and finish the elegant meal with perfect rectangles of homemade almond cake, served with a side of deeply comforting almond gelato.

Let’s just say, I’m already counting the days until I return to stay here for as long as humanly possible. Fun fact: United Airlines flies direct from Newark to Palma.

The 'Pharmacy Bar' at Six Senses Ibiza, a wellness resort.

IBIZA | DAY 6-7

Ibiza Beach Club Experience

To culminate the week, an overnight stay in Ibiza is the night many on this party-happy cruise ship have been waiting for. For us mamas, the idea of clubbing until 4am sounds more like a nightmare. Judging from our short stint at the Scarlet Lady’s nightclub, the Manor, we wouldn’t last more than 30 minutes inside Ibiza’s Pacha, the famed oontz-oontz nightclub where everyone else is headed. Instead, we merry sailors (now a tight-knit group of four) head to the Six Senses resort on the north side of the island, just a 30-minute Uber ride away. Ibiza’s sunset, seen from the Beach Caves restaurant at Six Senses, is spectacular. The strum of the guitar from the long-haired, barefoot smiling Spanish buddha, Juan Calero Navalon, is the kind of transporting experience that encapsulates why people travel in the first place.

By the next morning, we’re ripe for rest and relaxation. Thankfully, the ‘beach club experience’ involves lying down on a full sized foam mattress (with pillows!) right out on the sand at the Nassau Beach Club . This venue is the most touristy yet, but once again, that doesn’t bother us because we’re shaded by a large umbrella, drinking a complimentary pitcher of Sangria, enjoying the views. These people bring hooch beachwear to another level. Diamond mesh doesn’t cover anything, honey!

Very soon, our adventure will come to a close and we’ll be flying coach from Barcelona back to real life. But daytime in Ibiza is a bit like daytime in Las Vegas — it’s just what we need to emotionally move on. It also helps that Gaya, our exceptionally helpful “Mega Rockstar Agent,” essentially a cabin butler, has already organized our car transfer back to the airport without us having to lift a finger. A hospitality graduate from Mumbai, she has looked after our every need throughout the week.

There are some experiences you only dream about and there are those you didn't know you needed — until they're right in front of you. Gleefully chasing the ship from the Cannes promenade during the film festival is one I’ll never forget, nor is watching the sun dip into the sea off the coast of Ibiza. What will last, long after we return home, is the positive effect on our friendship. For us, it means that every time we wear our espadrilles or make espresso in our duty-free Barcelona cups, we will think wistfully of Mother’s Day-Week — which, after this most epic working-mom cruise — should definitely become a thing.

7 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING

  • Bookings: Virgin heavily promotes Shore Excursions weeks before boarding via email marketing blasts. Don’t ignore them. Book your excursions early, or they will be sold out, because there are not enough seats to go around.
  • Passport: You do not need to carry your passport. Store it in your safe on the boat; just make sure you’re back on board on time! Your tour guide will remind you of your curfew time at least thrice.
  • Paperwork: You’ll be asked to sign a ticket contract before embarkation and liability waivers on tour buses. It’s par for the course.
  • Tips: No tips are needed for tour guides. Tipping is included in your voyage fare.
  • Refunds: Shore Things are fully refundable, if you cancel 48 hours before the start of the excursion taking place. You can use the Virgin Voyages App to do this, which the company makes you download before boarding. It’s where you’ll find your itinerary, communicate with staff, or order food and drinks to your cabin.
  • Pricing: Virgin Voyages uses dynamic pricing to dictate tour pricing (the higher demand for a specific tour, the higher the price). Per their website, “Please be aware that price will vary by voyage and can be found in your app or by calling Sailor Services.” When you see ‘Starting from,’ take it with a grain of salt. Our Shore Things ranged from $320 to $530.
  • Tour Operators : “This Shore Thing operator has received third-party certification based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council criteria” is listed on each of the above tours. If it’s not listed, choose one that is.

Virgin Voyages cruise cabins and suites: Everything you want to know

Erica Silverstein

True to its brand, Virgin Voyages does things a little differently than other cruise lines, and this ethos extends to its accommodations. Virgin Voyages' cabins sport a minimalist look with futuristic touches, and its suites exude a rock-n-roll vibe with in-room turntables and peekaboo showers.

While these cruise rooms may be unique in the cruise industry, you won't have trouble choosing your cabin or suite. Virgin offers a reasonable three styles of standard cabin and eight categories of suites, so your choice will be guided by your requirements around space, price and light.

Virgin also does not use standard cruise industry lingo to refer to its rooms. Inside cabins are Insider rooms, ocean views are Sea Views, and balconies are Sea Terrace cabins. Suites are RockStar Quarters. Many rooms can accommodate one to four guests, often in slightly unusual bed layouts, so pay attention if you're traveling in a pack and looking to save a few bucks on your cruise fare.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Whether this is your first cruise ever or your first with this cruise line, you'll want to familiarize yourself with Virgin Voyages' cabins and suites before you make that booking. Here's everything you need to know.

A Virgin Voyages cabin primer

que es virgin voyages

Virgin Voyages sails three identical ships, with one more on the way by the end of 2023. Cabin categories and design are standard across the fleet, so if you're familiar with one ship, you're familiar with them all.

Here is a breakdown of the cabin types on Scarlet Lady , which should be the same across all the sister ships:

  • Insider inside cabins: 105 (8%)
  • Sea view outside cabins : 96 (7%)
  • Sea Terrace balcony cabins: 1,051 (79%)
  • RockStar Quarters suites: 78 (6%)

The cruise line caters to adults only; all passengers must be 18 years old. That means you won't find any family-focused accommodations. However, you will find Insider and Sea View cabins designed for solo passengers, with a 3/4 size bed (larger than a twin but smaller than a full.)

que es virgin voyages

Other cabins and suites in all categories can sleep three or four guests. Groups who don't want to squeeze four into a room (and we wouldn't recommend it, given Virgin's tiny bathrooms and limited storage) can take advantage of connecting rooms.

Balcony cabins are designated either regular, extra-large, centrally located or limited-view, and your cruise fare will change depending on which you choose. Cheeky Corner and Suite Aft Suites are also divided into Pretty Big Terrace, Even Bigger Terrace and Biggest Terrace classes.

Accessible cabins are available in Insider, Sea View, Central Sea Terrace, Extra-Large Sea Terrace and Seriously Suite categories.

All Virgin Voyages cabins mix a hip yet minimalist design (think IKEA or micro hotel) with tech-forward accessories (such as an iPad that controls the A/C, curtains and mood lighting). The look is more spare than you'll find on other cruise lines that feature thick mattresses, fluffy duvets and faux-wood cabinetry in their cabins.

que es virgin voyages

In standard cabins, the bed is modular – not only transforming from a queen bed to twins but also turning from a bed into an L-shaped lounging couch. In some quad layouts, a queen bed and an extra twin share the same headboard with a bunk overhead. The mattresses are rearranged on a long platform to form various arrangements; any uncovered portion of the platform serves as a nightstand or low table.

A triangular-with-rounded-edges odd-shaped white table serves as a desk and vanity in most standard cabins, with a round vegan leather stool beneath. It partially overlaps the shelving unit beneath that houses a mini-fridge and small shelves. Above is a round mirror and a shelf holding the room-controlling tablet.

Sea View and Sea Terrace cabins trade out the typical cruise ship cabin couch or love seat for a spare director's style chair with a faux leather partial back and a padded seat.

Virgin also skips a full wardrobe for a more minimalist closet area where a hanging rod and a two-shelf luggage rack with storage baskets are hidden behind a curtain. A narrow floor-to-ceiling wardrobe contains four slim drawers, shelves housing the safe, life jackets and extra linens and a full-length mirror.

que es virgin voyages

It's not a lot of storage space — perfect for one, manageable for two and likely impossible for three or four.

Standard bathrooms are also tiny and lacking in storage space. The shower has one measly shelf and pump bottles of Red Flower shampoo, conditioner and body wash. It offers both a rain shower head and a wand. The rest of the tiny bathroom features a bowl sink and a small vanity where you can store toiletries if you move the hand towels somewhere else (possibly the shelf below with the garbage can).

The entire space is tight, even for average-sized people. If you need spacious loos, you will need to book a suite.

Virgin Voyages ships have eight types of suites, ranging from 352-square-foot Seriously Suites (which are essentially extra-spacious regular cabins with slightly nicer furnishings and a much larger bathroom) to the 2,147-square-foot Massive Suite with separate living and sleeping areas, a music room, and a gigantic terrace with a dining table (with steps up in case you want to pull a Richard Branson and dance on it) and hot tub.

Related: Why you should splurge for a suite on your next cruise

Suites are split into two categories — RockStar Quarters and Mega RockStar Quarters — which determine which additional perks come with your booking.

Virgin claims that 86% of its cabins feature private balconies, and if you can, you want to book one of these. Why? Because nearly every Sea Terrace comes with a sustainably sourced hammock that is extremely comfortable and unusual in the cruise industry — and for us, was the best part of the entire Virgin accommodation experience.

Inside cabins on Virgin Voyages cruise ships

que es virgin voyages

Insider cabins are Virgin's name for windowless interior rooms . They measure 105 to 177 square feet and can sleep one (Solo Insiders) to four people (Social Insiders). As we mentioned above, the Solo Insiders have a 3/4-sized bed. The four-person arrangement is two twin beds arranged in an L shape head to head, with two bunkbeds also in L shape right above. The intent is for the lower beds to be made up as couches during the day and transformed into beds at night.

The room is laid out like a standard Scarlet Lady cabin, but on the far wall, where a window would be, there's a red, round art piece evocative of a porthole.

Ocean-view cabins on Virgin Voyages cruise ships

que es virgin voyages

Sea View cabins are slightly bigger at 130 to 190 square feet and can sleep one to three people, with one pull-down bunk and beds that convert from a queen to two twins. They are arranged identically to the Insider cabins, except they have a large round porthole window with a window seat on the exterior wall.

Some Sea View cabins come in slightly different configurations, especially the rooms located where the ship's superstructure juts out at an angle. We toured one of these practically V-shaped rooms, which had one rectangular window rather than a full porthole. The window was on the same wall as the bed and chair, and the opposite wall had the desk, mini-fridge and mirror. The converging angle of the two walls made it a tight squeeze between the bed and the desk.

Related: Inside vs. outside cabin: Which affordable cruise room is best for you?

The bottom of the V, if you will, had a tall wardrobe and full-length mirror. The top of the V was the wall with the entry door, the bathroom and the closet hidden away in a tight corner by the window.

Balcony cabins on Virgin Voyages cruise ships

que es virgin voyages

Virgin calls its balcony cabins Sea Terraces. They measure 185 to 225 square feet, including the 45-square-foot terrace. They can sleep two to four people, but there's only one bunkbed. To sleep four, two people will need to share a bed, the third bed will be perpendicular in an L shape (so three heads in close proximity) and the fourth is a bunk flush with the cabin wall above.

Sea Terraces share the layout of the other standard cabins, but the placement of the sleeping and living areas alternates in adjacent rooms. Some cabins have the bed by the bathroom and the desk by the balcony, while the rooms on either side will have the reverse layout, with the bed by the balcony and the desk by the bathroom.

Balconies are outfitted with two upright not-that-comfortable metal chairs and a circular drinks table just big enough for two glasses. The real attraction here is the full-size red hammock hung from the ceiling. A grown adult can easily lay out or simply sit and swing in the hammock. Be prepared to come to blows with your cabinmate over who gets the hammock first and for how long.

Related: Why it pays to upgrade your cruise ship cabin

Hammock fans should be aware that certain cabins at the front of each ship do not have a hammock due to constraints around the ship's steel structure and higher winds in these areas. Instead, these balconies have hanging "egg" chairs.

If you love your hammock so much you can't live without it, you can buy one on board. The custom-designed hammocks are handwoven by women in rural Thailand and sold by Yellow Leaf, an organization focused on community transformation and female empowerment.

Among the RockStar Quarters, the Seriously Suite is the most common suite type on board. It measures 352 square feet, including the balcony. It features a European king bed facing the floor-to-ceiling glass balcony doors, tall closet wardrobes, a brass vanity, a shelving unit with a turntable and bar setup and a window behind the bed looking into the extra-large shower. The bathroom is spacious with a marble tile look, and the terrace is only slightly larger than a standard one, with the same furnishings.

The Sweet Aft Suite ranges in size from 416 to 661 square feet, depending on the deck and the size of the balcony. The higher the deck, the bigger the suite and terrace. There's one Sweet Aft Suite on each deck between decks 8 and 14, and each is located smack in the center of the back of each deck.

These suites also have a bed facing the windows, but the bathroom is to the side with a shower porthole looking onto the oversized balcony. In addition to the standard hammock, the terrace features two padded lounge chairs, a couch and a round metal table (meant for Champagne) and chairs.

The Brilliant Suite measures 482 square feet and looks like an expanded version of the Seriously Suite. The extra space allows for a modular couch that can double as a bed; this suite can sleep up to four. Its balcony is slightly longer than the Seriously Suite's, meaning it can offer the larger Champagne table of the Brilliant Suite.

The Cheeky Corner Suite also comes in a range of sizes, 615 to 857 square feet, based on deck and balcony size. The 14 suites are at the back corners of the ship on decks 8 – 14, on either side of the Sweet Aft Suites.

Balconies wrap around the back and sides of the ships, and offer the same furnishings as the Sweet Afts but with the hammock tucked away in the side corner. Inside, the room has a corner sofa area and a large wardrobe.

The Gorgeous Suite is the smallest at 570 square feet, and can sleep up to four. Its interior is similar to the Brilliant Suite, but the difference is in the balcony. The suite has a double-depth balcony with an outdoor shower and lounge chairs.

The Posh Suite measures 833 square feet, with living and sleeping areas divided by a wall. It can sleep four (the living room sofa can convert to a bed) and has a bath and a half (the master with a peekaboo shower looking into the bedroom and out the balcony doors beyond). The balcony is similar to the other suite terraces with lounge chairs, a hammock, Champagne table and chairs and a small couch.

The Fab Suite, at 950 square feet, is essentially an oversized version of the Posh Suite. The extra space allows for additional seating areas in both the living room and bedroom. It can also sleep four.

All the way forward on Deck 15, each of the two Massive Suites lives up to its name, coming in at a whopping 2,147 square feet. You enter the main living area with a circular couch seating area and a full bar. To one side is the music room, which can double as an extra bedroom; the suite sleeps up to four — that is if you don't stay up rocking out on the provided guitars all night. An adjacent guest bathroom is ideal for hosting parties.

On the other side, the master bedroom has privacy behind sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. Just behind, the marble-tiled dressing area features two closets and a soaking tub; turn the corner to find the rest of the bathroom, complete with the signature windowed shower.

The also-massive terrace is your own private backyard with a hot tub, outdoor shower, dining table for six, two hammocks, circular couch seating and padded lounge chairs.

Bottom line

Virgin Voyages' cabins get the job done. However, its standard rooms won't keep you inside when the real fun is found in the ships' public areas. Their best feature is the hammock on every balcony.

For more spacious bathrooms, tricked-out terraces, lounge and seating spaces, and extra perks, upgrade to the RockStar Quarters. While you might want to bring the after-party back to your social living quarters, you miss out if you hide out in your upper-deck digs rather than immerse yourself in the entertainment and cozy hangouts found around Virgin Voyages' ships.

Virgin Voyages

No habrá buffets

How Do The Bar Tab Changes Affect Your Vacation?

Virgin Voyages have made changes to the popular Bar Tab drinks package options. We look at how this might affect your cruise. Virgin Voyages have added a $100 and $200 option to the existing deal.

A Change To The Virgin Voyages Bar Tab Scheme

Announced with the release of new itineraries last week , Virgin Voyages has expanded their pre-purchase Bar Tab offering with lower amounts to suit all type of sailors. Pre-purchasing a Bar Tab will always score a bonus onboard credit for additional rounds throughout your entire voyage. We have also updated our very own Bar Tab Calculator to reflect the new changes.

Try the Bar Tab Calculator

What Is The Virgin Voyages Bar Tab?

As of right now, Virgin Voyages don’t offer an ‘all-you-can-drink’ package like most other cruise lines. Instead, Virgin Voyages allow sailors to pre-purchase a Bar Tab – a type of on-board credit that can be used exclusively on beverages. Why pre-pay? Virgin Voyages offer a bonus when you buy certain amounts of credit.

From Our On-board Credit Guide

  • The Bar Tab is specifically designated for purchasing drinks during your cruise.
  • It covers a wide range of beverage options, such as cold-pressed juices, cocktails, coffee, alcoholic beverages, and afternoon tea.
  • You don’t need to tell the bar to use your Bar Tab – if possible the Bar Tab will be used up before you start dipping into your Sailor Loot.

The Changes In Detail

The existing deal when adding a $300 credit still applies and is still based on your loyalty status:

  • An extra $50 is added when adding a $300 Bar Tab Credit (an extra 16.67% value)
  • This is expanded to $100 bonus if you are a member of the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club (an extra 33.33% value)
  • This is further expanded to $125 for those who sailed in Virgin Voyages’ first year (these sailors are called Sea Blazers) or members of the exclusive ‘Club 485C’ loyalty group  (an extra 41.67% value)

In addition to these existing deals Virgin Voyages have added two more options which are unaffected by loyalty status:

  • $100 – with a $10 bonus (an extra 10% value)
  • $200 – with a $25 bonus (an extra 12.5% value)

The best Bar Tab bonus continues to remain the $300 Bar Tab but these new options do offer a level of flexibility.

Bar Tabs are available for purchase until 24 hours before sailing. To secure yours and lock in your drink bonus after booking, head over to the My Account section on this website or the Virgin Voyages app.

Virgin Voyages is known for being adults only, but there's a lot more that's different that you'll want to know before you sail. Trying to explain all the differences between Virgin and more traditional cruise lines is a challenge. Put bluntly, there are a lot of changes both big and small.
