Kayak the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Shingleton, Michigan

Description

Added by James Brady

The best way to see the 200-foot sandstone cliffs that make the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore famous is to do it up close and personal by kayak!

The best place to start a kayak tour of the main section of cliffs along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Miners Beach, located just outside of Munising. Miners Beach features a good size parking lot, along with a beautiful sandy beach that serves as a great launching point within sight of the 200-foot cliffs.

As you paddle, you can take in the remarkably clear waters of Lake Superior and the woods that hug the shore of Miners Beach. As you begin to reach the first stretch of cliffs, you will paddle by Bridal Veil Falls, which is typically visible early in the season or after a strong rain. East of that, you will soon be overtaken by 200-foot sandstone cliffs, some of which hang over you as you paddle beneath them.

There are not many places to stop along the initial stretch of cliffs, but if you manage to paddle approximately 3 miles east of Miner Beach, you will come across the perfect place to stop for lunch at Mosquito Beach. Despite the name, Mosquito Beach is a beautiful place to stop, relax, and take in the sights. The rock shelf that you enjoy your lunch on plunges beneath the water not far from the shore and provides for great snorkeling opportunities. Just down the beach, visitors can explore the caves of the Bloody Chiefs and even jump into the lake off of some of the rock ledges near the caves.

If you are lucky enough to have good paddling conditions, or are just in extra good paddling shape, you can continue paddling further east along the shoreline and explore several more miles of sandstone cliffs and highlights including the shipwreck of the Superior and the natural rock arch known as Lovers Leap. Be sure to know your limits though because the paddle back to Miners Beach can take several hours, especially if the wind is out of the west.

An absolute must if you’re in the area

There are numerous tours in the area however, if you’re like us and have your own kayaks— launch from Miners beach. We paddled just past lovers leap before turning around and heading back. If going out without a guide, be sure to be prepared and check the forecast for strong winds.

8 Ways to have the Best Pictured Rocks Kayaking tour

by Meghan Klave Filed Under: things to do

You know that old cliche, “the pictures don’t do it justice?” Yeah, I thought that was silly before I visited some of nature’s masterpieces. Taking a Pictured Rocks kayaking tour is an absolute must-do!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking

Upper Peninsula Michigan Pictured Rocks Kayaking

I’m certain you’ve seen photos of this magnificent place and you’re probably thinking how gorgeous it is. How amazing the pictures are. How they couldn’t possibly be more picturesque in person than they are on film.

Ummmm.  I was in awe the entire trip! Honestly! The entire time I was at Pictured Rocks kayaking all I could think of was how lucky I was to witness it. And not to mention in the capacity that I did.

So I’ve taken a few photos…more like 358 but I won’t bore you or bog down this site with that many. Besides, you need to go do your own Pictured Rocks kayaking tour to fully appreciate it.

Breathe in the beauty and behold the vastness before you.

I purchased this Pictured Rocks kayaking tour as a birthday present for Bob back in January. We’ve gotten to a point in our marriage that we both prefer experiences over stuff. We have an appetite for adventure…and when I say we I really mean me. And Bob, being the loving hubby that he is, plays along.

I’m not sure if it was the Travel Channel, Pinterest, Instagram or maybe even those ancient encyclopedias I had as a kid that gave me a wanderlust spirit. Or perhaps it was always buried within. All I can say is I’ve been bitten by the adventure bug and there’s no going back! With so many wonders in this world we should feel lucky to live in a time that we could seriously go anywhere.

Whether to a faraway land or right here in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan…of course this could be a faraway land for some of you, so that just means you better get planning!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tour

Pictured Rocks Kayaking along Lake Superior shore

Tip #1 Know before you go!

First you should know that I would not recommend venturing out into Lake Superior without a guide, especially if you’re inexperienced. The kayaks required to navigate large bodies of water, such as these, are not your everyday “sit-on-top” river boats.

Tandem sea kayaks with splash skirts, life vests and a few of the necessities  then you’re good to go!

Pictured Rock Kayaking Miners Beach

Launching from Miner’s Beach

Tip #2 Watch the weather!

We had our trip planned for a specific day but our good ole’ Michigan weather couldn’t resist trying to throw a wrench in our plans with a wicked cold front so with a quick schedule rearrangement, we found ourselves enjoying one of the best days of the summer.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking next to the shoreline

Tip #3 Be aware of detours!

There are a number of Pictured Rocks kayaking tour companies. None of them are in the location that you actually paddle from. Typically you are directed to a check in then given directions to a meet up location where you’ll be bused to your launch destination. Hmmm, that was a mouthful!

So with summertime comes road work and with road work comes detours. In other words, show up early!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking a break on the river

Tip #4 Pack light but don’t forget anything!

From snacks and water to quick-dry clothes and special shoes (which I wished we’d had for the shore lunch break!),  don’t forget the necessities!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking break at Mosquito Beach

Mosquito Beach…I didn’t get bit once!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking taking a break on the shore

Crystal clear waters of Lake Superior, ICE COLD TOO! And that’s not soft sand but instead sandstone, fragile but firm…and sharp sometimes.

Tip #5 Bang for your buck!

Get the most out of your trip by taking the longer paddle. Our tour, from starting at the beach to the very end, was about 6 or 7 hours. Yes, it was a long day but we had an incredible shore lunch at Mosquito Beach, where we had a chance to stretch our legs and explore.

We made it all the way down to the famous Lovers Leap Arch, got up close and personal with some sea caves and then squeezed through a tiny crevice called “Kissing Rock” – although that’s now questionable because said kisser fell to its watery depths.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking into the arch

Tip #6 Stay close to your guide!

And not necessarily because you’ll get lost or because of some safety measure (of course this is always priority). But because they are experts in pointing out fascinating structures, how they were formed, underwater shipwrecks and even interesting sea life.

Our guide was a wealth of knowledge and I enjoyed soaking up every bit of the info he was offering. And here’s a side tip for this tip…tip your tour guide at the end of your trip if you feel he or she is worthy. It’s just the right thing to do! Plus they work really hard! Although, I must admit I’m a bit jealous…

Pictured Rocks Kayaking along the rocks

Tip #7 Another beautiful option!

I couldn’t have imagined a site so stunning. Its shear awesomeness and enormity. Something over a billion years old, in such perfect condition to be gazed upon at this very moment in time.

There I go getting all sentimental…

If you find yourself in a position that you’re unable to see these gorgeous giants by kayak, you certainly should not miss out. There are plenty of cruise tours available. But do yourself a favor and get yourself a SUNSET SAIL!  I hear it’s even better when the warm light from the evening shines upon the stone creating colors that are even more vibrant than they already were.

Tip #8 Explore more!

Plan to stay at Twin Cedars Resort and see what our beautiful Upper Peninsula has to offer!

Kayaker, 40, rescued from Lake Superior by tour guides

Kayaker rescued from Lake Superior

Tour guides rescued a kayaker from Lake Superior on Thursday morning, June 27, 2024. National Park Service

MUNISING, MI – A distressed kayaker was pulled from Lake Superior by commercial tour guides Thursday morning, officials said.

The 40-year-old was rescued around 10:30 a.m. from the water near Miners Beach at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, park officials said on Facebook .

Rescue teams from the U.S. Coast Guard, Alger County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Park Rangers responded to the scene, officials said. Before they arrived, three tour guide operators who were in the area began rescue efforts, ultimately saving the kayaker from the water.

The kayaker was beginning to exhibit signs of shock, officials said. They were evaluated by medical personnel at the scene and released.

Guides and captains with Pictured Rocks Kayaking, Uncle Ducky Outdoors and Yooper Yachts are credited with the rescue.

“Their swift response played a critical role in ensuring this individual’s safe return from the water,” said Joseph Hughes, chief ranger at Pictured Rocks.

As the Fourth of July approaches, water temperatures on Lake Superior are just not reaching 60 degrees, officials said.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is an All-Season Wonderland

P ictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a natural wonderland on the southern Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s known for spectacular, colorful sandstone cliffs that span 15 miles of freshwater shoreline with unique rock formations, sandy beaches and verdant forests. If you like a natural environment and a place to truly escape it all, this place is worth visiting.

The park’s name comes from the sandstone cliffs that border the edge of Lake Superior and seem to rise from its depths majestically. The Pictured Rocks formed from wind and waves over a long period and the mineral-rich surrounding forest groundwater seeping through the cliffs’ cracks created a palette of colors ranging from fiery oranges to cool blue-green. Today’s landscape features sea caves, arches, blowholes, turrets, stone spires, and other features rising 50-200 feet above the water.

The best way to see them is from the water, but that’s not the only way. I’ve visited a few times and seeing the rocks from both land and shore are different and worthwhile experiences.

Popular Pictured Rocks Sandstone Formations

Various colorful rock formations span the 15 miles of seashore that make up the Pictured Rocks. While even the tall, flat sandstone slabs that make up most of the coast are unique and beautiful, a few formations are more memorable than the others. These include,

  • Miners Castle : This iconic formation is a towering sandstone structure that resembles a fortified castle. It is one of the park’s most recognizable and photographed landmarks because it’s easy to see from water and land. It’s the closest to downtown Munising and has a parking lot and easy-to-traverse footpath to an observation deck. You can view Miners Castle from three viewing platforms. The two upper viewing areas are wheelchair-accessible and not far from the parking lot.
  • Chapel Rock : This is a broad, tall, double-column rock. Two pillars are connected at the bottom and top, where a white pine tree somehow grows out of it. The tree is believed to be about 250 years old. Hikers often spend the day at Chapel Beach – arriving either by boat or a six-mile out-and-back hike through the woods.
  • Grand Portal : This massive sandstone archway is one of the most prominent natural arches in the Midwest.
  • Sea Caves : Also known as the Caves of All Colors, this small cave series is big enough for kayakers and canoeists to explore inside. Use caution, wear a helmet and be aware of the tide times so you don’t bang your head or get stuck. A few caves require you to back out because they’re too small to turn a boat around.
  • Lover’s Leap : This archway is a favorite spot to boat underneath and take pictures. Legend has it Lover’s Leap gets its name from when a Native American woman jumped to her death here after her lover failed to return from a trip.

How to see the Pictured Rocks: by Land or Water

One of the great things about visiting the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is the various activities and ways of seeing the Pictured Rocks that give entirely different experiences. Generally speaking, there is a view from above as you stand at the top of the cliffs or from below as you peer up from a boat on Lake Superior. Each is unique and worth your time.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering many activities to suit every taste and fitness level.

Pictured Rocks from the Water

Cruise boat tours.

There are various tour boats you can buy passage aboard and have the comfort of a big boat from which to view the Pictured Rocks. These tours can be good because they’re comfortable, affordable, and have experienced guides providing easy-to-hear narration and historical information about what you’re seeing. Pictured Rocks Cruises is a National Park Service-authorized tour company. They run a boat tour of the Pictured Rocks cliffs from mid-May through mid-October. However, several companies have both self-propelled and motored kayak adventures or boat rentals.

Kayak Tours

Another, dare I say better, way to see the Pictured Rock is by sea kayak. However, Lake Superior isn’t a small lake to which you may be accustomed. Sometimes, wind conditions create waves that reach so high that guides cancel kayak trips (this happened to me on my first attempt). Waves in Lake Superior have been recorded up to 26 feet tall. Kayaking in Lake Superior should only be done by seasoned kayakers with sea kayaks comfortable in rougher water conditions. If that’s you, then this is the way to go.

A kayak will allow you to get much closer than a cruise boat and enable you to go inside some sea caves, beneath the arches and even stop at a beach.

Seeing Pictured Rocks from the Shore

Beyond the captivating cliffs, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers a diverse array of landscapes to explore. Inland lakes and forests provide ample hiking, camping, and wildlife observation opportunities.

Hiking Pictured Rocks

Over 100 miles of hiking trails lead to cascading waterfalls, beaches, forest wilderness, cultural sites, and scenic overlooks of Lake Superior. Hiking trails vary in length but are on mostly flat terrain with only minor elevation gains.

  • Sand Point Marsh Trail – This wheelchair-accessible trail at Sand Point Beach is just a half-mile loop through wetlands with a cattail marsh, small ponds, white cedar and black spruce.
  • Munising Falls – This 800-foot out-and-back trail is paved and leads up a sandstone canyon to a 50-foot waterfall along Munising Creek. Two sets of stairs lead to elevated platforms that offer different views of the water as it drops over a sandstone cliff.
  • Miners Falls – This 1.2 miles out and back trail is one of my favorites. This easy, flat trail takes you through a lovely pine forest to Miners River, where the park’s most powerful waterfall falls 50 feet over a sandstone cliff. There are 64 steps down to a viewing platform.
  • Miners Castle to Miners Beach – A 2.0-mile out-and-back trail takes you from Miners Castle downhill to Miners Beach, crossing the river along the way. The hike back up is more difficult.

Chapel/Mosquito

Several trails and hikes are available at the Chapel/Mosquito area, not too far outside Munising. GPS is spotty to non-existent, so view and save maps before you leave the city. Find more hikes on the National Park Service site.

  • Mosquito Falls – This is a 2.0-mile roundtrip trip with a side trail that leads 0.7 miles to Mosquito Falls. The Mosquito River cascades over three rock shelves, the highest being 8 feet.
  • Chapel Falls – This busy trail is 2.5 miles roundtrip through an old road in a stunning hemlock and maple forest. It ends at the 60-foot-high Chapel Falls.
  • Chapel Rock & Chapel Beach – This 6.2-mile roundtrip hike follows the Chapel Falls trail to Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach. Pack your swimsuit and swim in Lake Superior when you get there. Return the way you came or make a loop on the forest trail back along the north/west side of Chapel Lake for different trees.

The best part about visiting a great lake is the freshwater experienced from a beach. There are various nooks and coves along the shoreline to dip a toe, but several designated areas are the best. The currents in Lake Superior can be strong, so it is essential to be careful when swimming.

  • Twelve Mile Beach is an aptly named long, sandy beach with soft sands perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking.
  • Miners Beach is at the bottom of Miners Castle and has stunning views of the sandstone cliffs and Lake Superior.
  • Chapel Beach sits next to the unique rock Chapel Rock formation. You can only get here by hiking or boat.

The best time to visit Pictured Rocks

Depending on how you’d like to spend your time – on the water, hiking, or snow sports – the best time to visit will vary. In the summer, you have hiking, boating and beaches, but snowmobiling, ice climbing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Primarily, when visiting a climate like northern Michigan, either summer or winter are the best, but the fall colors along the shoreline or the spring flowers can be worth it, too.

Winter Wonderland

It gets cold in northern Michigan in the winter, but the snow and ice enable different activities. If water sports are your thing, summer is your best bet, though Lake Superior will stay near 50 degrees. However, if you like the snow, there’s no place like northern Michigan for outdoor adventure.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore transforms into a winter wonderland during the colder months. Snow-covered landscapes, frozen waterfalls, and ice-encrusted cliffs create a magical ambiance. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers a variety of ice sports during the winter months, including ice climbing, ice skating, and snowshoeing.

Ice Climbing at Pictured Rocks

The combination of cold temperatures, lake-effect snow, waterfalls, and porous sandstone cliffs create a spectacle. The water seeping out of the rock layers creates spectacular ice curtains and tall ice columns perfect for climbing.

I’m a summer lover, so I’ve never seen the ice formations at Pictured Rocks, but they’re known to be breathtaking. Most ice climbing is done on the cliffs along Sand Point Road in Munising, closest to Sand Point Beach. It’s critical to use authorized guides when attempting ice climbing at Pictured Rocks – there are a couple. If you’re not into climbing, just viewing the ice cascades might be for you.

Other Snow Sports

Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing are popular winter activities. These allow visitors to uniquely experience the park’s serene beauty, but you’ll want a snowmobile. Some winters have snowfall over 200 inches beginning in mid-November and lasting until late April. Since almost all the park roads are unplowed in winter, snowmobiling is the main way to travel in the area.

Snowmobiles drive on some Munising roadways, frozen Lake Superior, and Grand Sable Lake, but not park hiking trails. Snowmobiles travel the H-58 road between Grand Marais and Munising in winter and pass many scenic spots.
