At the age of 10, Peter played in a band called The Little Ravens. He and David Bowie both went to Bromley Technical School and would spend lunch breaks together, playing Buddy Holly songs. The Little Ravens and Bowie's band, George and the Dragons, played shows together. When he was 11 years old, he played in the Trubeats before joining The Preachers, a band that Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman produced and managed.

Peter became a successful child guitarist, and in 1966 he became a member of The Herd, landing three British Top 10 hits. He was also named The Face of 1968 by Rave, a teen magazine.

In 1969, when Peter was 18 years old in 1969, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie with Steve Marriott.

Just four months before the live album that made him a superstar was released, Peter Frampton gave television viewers a hint of what was to come

Watch Peter Frampton play the classic Baby I Love Your Way on The Midnight Special in September 1975

Peter Frampton

In the fall of 1975, Peter Frampton 's star was on the rise. On tour to support that year's Frampton album – the one with Show Me The Way and Baby I Love Your Way on –  he'd record shows in San Francisco, New York and Plattsburgh to compile Frampton Comes Alive, the album that would change his life when it was released early the following year.

In early September, between a festival date at the Ohio River Jam with Ambrosia, Black Oak Arkansas, Ruby Starr and The J. Geils Band, and a support slot with Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd in San Bernardino, Frampton ventured to the studios of The Midnight Special in Burbank to make his first appearance on the show.

The episode was hosted by Helen Reddy, and joining Frampton in the studio were folk singer Hoyt Axton, Frank Valli, and KC and the Sunshine Band. The former Humble Pie guitarist played three songs from Frampton : (I'll Give You) Money , Nowhere's Too Far (For My Baby) and Baby I Love Your Way, and the latter performance has just been added to The Midnight Special 's ever-growing and ever-excellent YouTube channel.

It's a lovely clip. The song is beautiful, Frampton's band are on point, and the singer's youthful demeanour and sweet voice are clearly suited to the small screen. It's not hard to see why his likeness would soon be postered on bedroom walls across the nation.

Four months later, after a second appearance on The Midnight Special, in December, Frampton Comes Alive was released. It eventually spent 97 weeks on the US Billboard chart, 10 of them at No.1.

"That level of success took some getting used to," Frampton told Classic Rock in 2022. "There was one week where we sold a million copies. I was really excited at first."

Eventually Frampton got the call that the album had broken a sales record set by Carole King 's Tapestry , and things changed again. "That’s when I got scared," he said. "Because I now realise I have to follow up a live record that is not just a hit, but the biggest record of all time."

Peter frampton reflects on ‘frampton comes alive’ 40 years later: “i went from musician to pop star overnight”.

The eight-times-platinum live album just celebrated its 40th birthday, as the singer-guitarist — now 65 and with a new LP — remembers the phenomenon with the day's players.

Peter Frampton Reflects on 'Frampton Comes Alive!' 40 Years Later: "I Went From Musician Pop Star Overnight"

Forty years ago, A&M Records released Frampton Comes Alive! , the fifth album by Peter Frampton , a doe-eyed 25-year-old English rock guitarist. Hopes for the live, two-record set — recorded in 1975 — were cautiously optimistic. Previously, Frampton had made considerable headway in America, first as the lead guitarist for Humble Pie and then as a well-received but commercially insolvent solo act. Through relentless touring, he had established devout fan bases in New York, Detroit, Chicago and San Francisco and become a staple of FM radio’s emerging album-oriented rock format. A&M co-founder Jerry Moss had signed Frampton to the label when he was 19, because, Moss says today, “He had a cool face, he didn’t mind working, and he had a great attitude.” He adds, “I thought he was a star.”

Released without fanfare in the post-holiday doldrums of January 1976, Frampton Comes Alive! entered the Billboard 200 at No. 143 on Jan. 31. Coming on the heels of 1975’s cavalcade of soon-to-be-classics — including Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run , Queen’s A Night at the Opera , Patti Smith’s Horses and solo albums from three of the four ex-Beatles — a career-spanning collection of Frampton’s melodious hard rock, gilded with his jazz-influenced guitar work, was a gamble: a greatest-hits package without the hits, and a live album to boot. A&M hoped the set might go gold, selling about 500,000 copies.

“A&M was getting nervous,” recalls Lenny Bronstein , the label’s director of national radio promotion. “By then they had invested at least $1 million in Frampton they weren’t recouping.” His highest-charting LP thus far, 1975’s Frampton , had peaked at No. 23, but Frampton Comes Alive! leapt to No. 51 its second week, then to No. 22, No. 6, No. 4 and No. 2, where it loitered throughout March. Finally, Frampton got a call from Dee Anthony, his manager since his Humble Pie days. “He said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ ” recalls Frampton , now 65. ” ‘We’re No. 1.’ “

Frampton Comes Alive! bounced around the top 10 for the rest of 1976, logging a total of 10 weeks at No. 1, selling more than 6 million copies and breaking Carole King’s sales record for 1971’s Tapestry . “Show Me the Way,” which had stiffed when released as a single from Frampton , hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced the Talk Box, a squawking guitar effect, to millions. Within Frampton’s camp, surreal scenes began to unfold almost daily. A&M executive Bob Garcia was backstage at Anaheim Stadium when “all of a sudden, they cleared everybody away for somebody coming to say hello to Peter.” It was the Secret Service escorting Jack Ford, son of the president of the United States — and Frampton fan. Garcia remembers, “That’s when we knew he had arrived.”

? Frampton Comes Alive! ‘s freakishly outsized success caught the rock establishment off-guard — this was the same Frampton , playing the same songs, who six months earlier was still stuck second on the bill at Midwestern ballrooms. The mighty Led Zeppelin had toured the States the year before to comparative indifference; now Frampton had replaced Jimmy Page as the guitar hero du jour. Jon Pousette-Dart , opening act for the first leg of the Frampton Comes Alive! Tour, recalls that “from the earliest dates, it was clear they were sitting on top of the world with that record.” Garcia recalls Frampton peeking out from behind the speakers at the 70,000 fans packing Anaheim Stadium and sputtering, “I don’t f–ing believe this.” Thirty years before the term was coined, Frampton Comes Alive! went viral — becoming a pop-cultural avalanche that, once started, sustained its momentum until, it seemed, every man, woman and child in North America owned the album or had heard it on the radio.

“It was a great sense of satisfaction, obviously,” says Frampton . “But that’s where I got very nervous. No. 1 is a little scary, because there’s only one place to go from No. 1.”

An oral history of 'frampton comes alive': "i felt like i had lost before i started the next part of my career".

Then, as suddenly as it had arrived, Frampton’s moment vanished. I’m in You , the May 1977 follow-up to Frampton Comes Alive! , rushed into release with iffy material the guitarist wrote under unrelenting pressure, hit No. 2 on the momentum of its predecessor and sold 1 million copies in a month, but was widely considered a failure. Overexposed, his credibility as a rock musician cashiered by I’m in You’ s sentimental title ballad and pinup-style album cover, Frampton spent the rest of the ‘ 70s recording desultory albums and left the business entirely before re-emerging in 1986 with Premonition , a credible comeback album, and playing lead guitar on David Bowie’s Never Let Me Down .

Decades later, as the Grammy winner prepares for a national tour in support of his just-released 18th album, Acoustic Classics , Frampton’s hallmark double LP is, in a sense, a cautionary tale about the consequences of attempting to parlay a journeyman musician’s hard-earned success — built year by year, gig by gig — into an indiscriminate cash-out. But it’s also instructive to look back at how and why the set blew up, from aspirational gold album into cultural juggernaut, and why its influence lingers today, both as a business case study and an enduring cultural artifact. It’s tempting to shelve the album as ‘ 70s nostalgia, as temporal as bamboo bongs and blasting “Do You Feel Like We Do” while chugging pre-ironic reissue PBR . But Frampton Comes Alive! has survived with its dignity, and with the dignity of its creator, intact.

The album has been invoked in pop culture with knowing affection in every decade since its release. “If you lived in the suburbs, you were issued it — it came in the mail with free samples of Tide,” Mike Myers marveled in Wayne’s World 2 . In the 1994 Gen-X classic Reality Bites , Ben Stiller informs Winona Ryder the album “totally changed my life.” Frampton starred in the beloved 1996 “ Homerpalooza ” episode of The Simpsons , and the guitarist’s appearance in a 2008 Geico ad — in full Talk Box mode, clearly in on the joke — made him look magnanimous instead of pathetic. Frampton takes his music, but not himself, seriously, rendering him ridicule-proof.

?Frampton Comes Alive! also was the beneficiary of a specific cultural moment. Issued at the dawn of the disco and punk movements, both soon to reshape the music business radically, the album was a nexus between the hard rock that defined the early ‘ 70s and the more melodious pop-driven rock that would emerge in the ‘ 80s . The album’s immense success enabled the mainstreaming of fellow rock road warriors: REO Speedwagon , Styx and other perpetual opening acts saw their careers blossom in its aftermath. “ Frampton Comes Alive! was the perfect storm for the new mainstream that AOR radio was embracing in the mid-’70s ,” says Lee Abrams, the consultant who pioneered the format. “It combined the ‘party ‘ til you drop’ exuberance of live music with melodic-but-with-an-edge songs. This album’s multitrack depth and [ Frampton’s ] then-image as a rocker played perfectly into the AOR mind-set among both listeners and programmers.”

That the album was several magnitudes more successful than previous live records — and Frampton’s fall was so devastatingly swift and career-maiming — owes to timing, demographics and the rise of AOR , says Eric Weisbard , a University of Alabama professor and author of Top 40 Democracy .

'Oral Sex During Turbulence': True Tales From the '70s Rock-Star Party Plane of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and More

The record business in the mid-’70s was steeped in a cultural sexism and elitism, says Weisbard . “The definition of a cool rock person at the time was laden with male virility,” which suited the AOR audience, rife with blue-collar young men and not so many women. “If you suddenly had a ton of female fans, you were seen as compromised” — a pop rather than a rock star. Frampton actually had experienced this before, as lead singer of ‘ 60s teen-heartthrob band The Herd and formed Humble Pie to jettison his pop-star past and burnish his musicianship and his rock bona fides. Frampton Comes Alive! was meant to be the culmination of this vision. But the album’s unprecedented popularity, combined with Frampton’s flowing locks and pretty-boy poise, delivered to him a vast constituency of young women who had never heard, nor cared, that he was also a serious guitarist. For much of 1976, he had a foot in both worlds — a credentialed rock star on Tiger Beat ‘s cover with John Travolta.

“There had never been a pop-rock star on the magnitude of Frampton ,” says Chip Rachlin , a concert booking agent in the ‘ 70s . “He paid his dues and had credibility, and so he was taken seriously, as opposed to a David Cassidy.” But Frampton’s heedless march into pop stardom — at the behest of his management — led back to the very place he had worked so hard to leave behind. Manager Anthony (father of Universal Music Group executive vp Michele Anthony) continued cashing in on every opportunity, regardless of its potential impact on Frampton’s longer-term image, such as co-hosting the Rock Music Awards with Olivia Newton-John in 1977. “I don’t think Peter should have appeared,” says A&M’s Moss. “I sort of wanted to keep him sweaty.”

When I’m in You dropped with Frampton posing in satin and frills, the last vestiges of his credibility vanished. His champions at AOR abandoned him. “That image of him was completely rejected by rock radio,” says A&M’s Bronstein . “The negativity was nuclear.”

“It’s much like the Jonas Brothers,” adds Rachlin . “They were the biggest act in the world for about 18 months. And then you couldn’t give them away. Rewind the tape 35 years and you have Frampton .”

Weisbard argues that Frampton’s team could have salvaged the situation had they not hewed to the either/or of pop star or rock star, pointing to the credible job A&M later did positioning Sting — another virtuoso musician with stunning looks and an audience of adoring young women — when he left The Police for a solo career. Abrams concurs: “I would’ve focused him as a rock ‘n’ roller and ax master who happened to be cute, rather than the other way around. They kind of cut off his balls in search of hit singles.” ?

Frampton doesn’t put it that way, exactly. “I went from a musician to a pop star overnight,” he says. “That’s a very hard thing to scrape off.”

How Peter Frampton Finally Hit the Big Time With ‘Frampton Comes Alive!’

The '70s were the era of the live album. Don't misunderstand: Live recordings predate the Me Decade and plenty have been released since, but the '70s were the live album's golden age.

The gauntlet was thrown down in May 1970 by a pair of future live classics released only a week apart. The Who 's Live at Leeds and the triple-album Woodstock soundtrack brought the show into kids' bedrooms better than anything that had come before, and both were rewarded with stellar sales and critical praise. A format that was once reserved for contractual filler or stopgap releases was suddenly fashionable. Before the year ended, the Rolling Stones released Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!; before the decade ended, we had live releases from Elvis Presley , the Beatles , Led Zeppelin , Ted Nugent and Aerosmith . It was a status symbol, an indicator of commercial clout: The bigger you were, the more likely your discography sported a live album.

In the middle of the decade, another pair of live albums changed the paradigm. Both featured artists whose recording careers were floundering but who did well on the road. Both were hail Mary passes -- one last chance to catch on with the record buying public. The first was the September 1975 release of  Kiss Alive! Three months later (and also sporting an exclamation point), A&M Records released former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton 's concert masterpiece,  Frampton Comes Alive!

Frampton was a prodigy who counted David Bowie among his childhood friends. By age 18, he'd already tasted success with the Herd and had formed Humble Pie with Steve Marriott . Together, they would record four studio albums before jumping on the '70s live LP bandwagon with Performance Rockin' the Fillmore at the end of 1971. It would be Humble Pie's most successful album, but the band's hotshot guitarist was gone before it came out.

At the tender age of 21, Frampton had two successful bands in his rear-view mirror and a limitless road ahead of him. His first solo album, 1972's Wind of Change,  eschewed the muscular boogie of Humble Pie for a more acoustic, singer-songwriter vibe akin to James Taylor . Songs like the album's title cut introduced the new, mellow Frampton while "It's a Plain Shame" and a cover of the Stones' "Jumpin' Jump Flash" seemed tailored for his established fan base. In other words, the album was neither fish nor fowl, and sales were disappointing.

The following year's Frampton's Camel also had its mellow moments, most notably "Lines on My Face," but album closer "Do You Feel Like We Do" demonstrated a glimmer of things to come. Compared to the version that we all know and love, this take is a toothless, caged lion. There's ferocity lurking beneath the studio production, but it just can't break through. The album did better than Wind of Change but still didn't manage to break into the Top 100.

Listen to Peter Frampton Perform 'Show Me the Way'

For 1974's Somethin's Happening Frampton pulled out all the stops. He recorded at Headley Grange, home of no less than Led Zeppelin IV. He recruited Nicky Hopkins, the Rolling Stones' sideman, to play keyboards on a couple of tracks. He even had the legendary Hipgnosis team design the album cover. Although tracks like "Doobie Wah" and "I Wanna Go to the Sun" were solid enough, the album didn't fare any better than its predecessors.

Album No. 4, 1975's self-titled Frampton is when things started to gel. The acoustic Frampton and the electric rocker finally came together in the album's second track, "Show Me the Way." The song also featured the talk box, a guitar effect that he'd first encountered years earlier while doing session work for George Harrison 's All Things Must Pass. The album's only other single was a soft rocker in the style of "Wind of Change," "Baby I Love Your Way." On the strength of its two singles, Frampton cracked the top 40, but not by much.

Now 25-years-old and with four albums under his belt, Frampton hit the road in support of his latest release. In 1975, though, "hitting the road" no longer meant simply playing clubs. Bert Sugarman's Midnight Special brought the '70s taste for live music to late-night television. In those pre-MTV days, The Midnight Special was the place to be seen, so Frampton brought his two new singles to the show along with a reworked version of "Do You Feel Like We Do," now featuring the talk box he used on his most recent studio album.

Those lucky enough to catch the show in that pre-VCR era saw and heard a side of Frampton that had been lost in the studio. Many tried to explain to their friends and siblings that they'd seen a guy make a guitar talk, trying to describe the magic behind "Show Me the Way."

Others had the good fortune to see it for themselves as Frampton crisscrossed the U.S. with his band: drummer John Siomos, bassist Stanley Sheldon and guitarist/keyboardist Bob Mayo. The tour literally stretched from coast to coast, with shows recorded in New York and San Francisco. "I remember it was one of the first nights we ever headlined in San Francisco, or anywhere else for that matter," he wrote on his website . "I wasn't worried about the [recording] truck being outside, I was worried that we had enough material to do an hour and a half act. It was a stretch at that point. We were used to doing 50 minutes."

He didn't need to worry. Released on Jan. 6, 1976, Frampton Comes Alive! contained 78 minutes' worth of material. The deluxe edition released in celebration of the the album's 25th anniversary restored three missing songs from the band's set, totaling an additional 13 minutes.

Listen to Peter Frampton Perform 'Do You Feel Like We Do?'

Due to the album's intro, most people assume that Frampton Comes Alive! was recorded in San Francisco. For the most part that is true, but a quick glance at the album's liner notes reveals that it is a composite of recordings from San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom, the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, Calif., Island Music Center in Commack, N.Y. and State University of New York at Plattsburgh. That's just trivia, though. The important thing here is that the album captured the experience of being there better than even Live at Leeds or Woodstock .

There's a sense of space in the recording that's equal parts engineering and Frampton's phrasing. Songs from his four studio albums were allowed to breathe onstage, empty measures filled with ambient noise. Frampton's Camel's "Lines On My Face," for example, was transformed from a fairly generic '70s soft rock ballad into an emotional tour de force on Frampton Comes Alive!,  the audience swirling around the lyric in a supportive embrace.

The Frampton album is well represented with four tracks, including the two singles: the almost Piedmont blues "Penny for Your Thoughts" and "I'll Give You Money," which qualifies as the album's heaviest track. Somethin's Happening's title cut and "Doobie Wah" both appear, the latter introduced by Frampton as "a little bit funky" and live even more evocative of its Doobie Brothers inspiration than in its studio version.

Debut album Wind of Change ties Frampton for most cuts with four: the title song, an uninspired cover of " Jumpin' Jack Flash," "It's a Plain Shame" and an acoustic reworking of "All I Wanna Be (Is by Your Side)" that picked up the tempo and stripped the song to its emotional core.

For most listeners,  Frampton Comes Alive! comes down to the pair of talk box tracks, "Show Me the Way" and "Do You Feel Like We Do." Many hours were spent in 1976 with the needle dropped on side four, track two, staring at the gatefold cover photo of the skinny guitarist bathed in purple light, wondering how in the heck he made that black Les Paul say " I want to thank you ." Even more hours were spent debating whether the word was "thank" or something more provocative.

To say the album was a phenomenon is an understatement. With 11 million copies sold, it held the record for bestselling live album of all-time for several years, and its success pushed live versions of "Show Me the Way" and "Baby I Love Your Way" back onto the charts. An edited version of "Do You Feel Like We Do" went Top 10, too, on the power of FM radio's willingness to play extended tracks. Even at half the length of the album version, the live take clocked in at more than seven minutes.

After more than a decade in the business, Frampton found himself an overnight success. Rather than hotshot guitarist or singer-songwriter, he was suddenly a teen idol with all of the over exposure that entails. The follow-up album,  I'm In You , was a commercial hit but also marked the beginning of the backlash. In 1978 he starred in the film adaptation of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,  a critical disaster that essentially ended his teen idol phase.

Frampton never again achieved the commercial success of Frampton Comes Alive!, but that's hardly a criticism. For this moment in time, millions of fans felt just like he did.
