What to look for How we test

The best commuter backpacks for cycling will let you carry your luggage when riding, whether you're using your bike to commute to work or for leisure. Whilst there are other choices available - such as bike panniers and handlebar bags - a specific cycling backpack is often the easiest option.

Whereas pannier bags require a specific rack which needs to be fixed to the bike, this simply isn't a consideration for backpacks, which allow you to easily swap between bikes of various designs.

If you’re carrying up to five kilos / 11 lbs of stuff, the straps need to be up to the job and ideally need to be backed up by a waist strap and a chest strap. Venting is important; most manufacturers have designed their own system to channel air and fight sweaty-back syndrome - which is admittedly a downside of backpacks compared to panniers.

The cycling industry has settled on a capacity of 20-30 liters for the commuter bag. Most have an internal organizer with separate compartments including one for a laptop or tablet. A zipped outer valuables pocket is handy so that you don’t have to dive to the bottom of the main section in search of your keycard when you arrive at your destination. Here are the best cycling backpacks we've tested...

The quick list

camelbak mule commute 22l

Best compact option

The evergreen MULE combines durable materials, a host of pockets and an air channel back to reduce sweatiness.  There is space for a D-lock on the outside and a system for attaching a helmet when it's not being worn, although we found this a little fiddly.

Rapha Travel Backpack

Best for stylish visibility

Rapha's backpack has a minimalistic design that hides a useful number of pockets, easy access clamshell zip and excellent reflectivity for extra visibility. However, the seams aren't fully sealed against the weather and it can feel awkward when packed full.

Chrome Industries Barrage Freight Backpack

Best for ultimate durability

Tough and weatherproof, the Barrage Freight backpack certainly lives up to the heavy-duty sound of the manufacturer's name. The external mesh panel is extremely useful for carrying larger items and there are other pockets for organization too, but its build quality comes at a cost - both cash and weight-wise.

Ortlieb Commuter Daypack Urban Line

Best backpack for waterproofing

Ortlieb's expertise lies in making bags as waterproof as possible, so your cargo will be very well protected from the elements inside. There is only one pocket though (intended for tech), and the roll-top can snag on your helmet if the bag is very full.

CamelBak HAWG Commute 30L

Best for useful pockets

With a 30 liter capacity, the HAWG is at the larger end of the scale for commuting, but it is a great way to carry kit around. There are lots of well-thought-out pockets for organisation and a weatherproof sleeve for protection. Carrying it is comfy, but the helmet straps weren't perfect.

New Looxs Varo Bag

Best backpack that doubles up as a pannier

With shoulder straps and pannier rack attachments, the Varo is ideal for commuters who prefer to carry the weight on the bike as far as possible but then have a walk into the office. It's waterproof with a roll-top closure but you need to make sure the straps stay clean, and it is a bit weighty.

CamelBak MULE Commute 22 which is one of the best cycling backpacks for commuters

1. CamelBak MULE Commute 22 Backpack

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The CamelBak MULE 22 backpack is a stylish option for those looking to travel light. With its robust weather-resistant fabric, it proved as tough as it looked when we had it on test.

But let’s talk pockets. Inside the main compartment, there is a weatherproof roll-top sleeve for a laptop or an A4-sized notebook. Then, over on the lid of the bag, you can find a really useful zipped mesh pocket which we used for small, loose items.

The arm harness of each strap is also lined with useful pockets. The right side can take keys (with a key loop) or train tickets, whilst the other side is generous enough to fit a phone - and is particularly useful as it allows for the phone to be inserted and removed without having to take off the bag. In terms of specific dimensions, our tester was using a 145x70mm phone with the system without a problem.

The back panel has three separate zones which rest on your back and feature an air channel to help with ventilation and reduce the chances of a sweaty back. Another useful touch is that the side pockets can take a D-lock, which makes securing your bike when on the go a little easier.

Rapha Travel Backpack Reflective which is one of the best cycling backpacks for commuters

2. Rapha Travel Backpack

The Rapha Travel Backpack with reflective coating is made of a waterproof nylon exterior, which provides great weatherproofing in itself. The seams aren’t taped, though, and the zips aren’t Aquaguard, so in truly biblical downpours there is a stowable fully waterproof cover that you can pull over the bag. Coming back to that reflective coating, it really does light up like a beacon when a light is shone on it in the dark.

Inside, the bag has a total capacity of 25 liters. This is split between the main body of the bag - which has a clamshell opening and fabric splitter for organising luggage more easily and efficiently, a smaller pocket for easy access to valuables with a small zip pocket inside, a padded laptop pocket, and a small pocket for easy access to keys without having to remove the bag at all. The two main pockets also include zips with loops on them so that you can padlock them, or open them easily even while wearing heavy duty gloves.

The straps of the bag also have a reflective coating on them to make visibility from the front better. We found both straps well padded and comfortable to wear for long periods of time, as well as being easily adjustable. A sternum strap with a magnetic clasp is also present for increasing stability.

The Rapha Travel Backpack is expensive when compared to some similar quality and functionality items, but succeeds in being stylish enough to use in any environment, not just for commuting or for travelling, while also being better value than several options available.

Chrome Industries Barrage Freight which is one of the best cycling backpacks for commuters

3. Chrome Industries Barrage Freight backpack

This rugged waterproof backpack is built for all conditions, with its 22 liter capacity and roll top and buckle closure system.

The external cargo net is the best part of this bag our testing found. It has tough, secure netting and four adjustable clips to hold items that don't fit well inside the main compartment, such as helmets or shoes. On the outer, there are also two side pockets which are useful for storing water bottles, as well as one vertical zipped pocket for valuables.

It's expensive and on the heavy side, but the Barrage Freight is an expertly constructed backpack that keeps its contents dry and lasts and lasts.

Ortlieb Commuter Daypack Urban Line which is one of the best cycling backpacks for commuters

4. Ortlieb Commuter Daypack Urban Line

Ortlieb has been making high-quality, rugged and durable bike bags for over 40 years. The Commuter Daypack takes all of this experience and expertise into a 27 liter backpack for the trendy urban rider.

As you'd expect, the Daypack is extremely well-made and completely waterproof so you can be safe in the knowledge that your laptop and clean underpants are well-protected on the way to work.

Despite its minimalistic appearance, our tester found the Daypack comfortable to wear and well-ventilated. There's a large padded pocket for your devices but otherwise the bag is one large space that will swallow all your daily wares and a basket full of shopping.

Camelbak HAWG 30L Commuter Backpack which is one of the best cycling backpacks for commuters

5. Camelbak HAWG Commute 30L

The HAWG cycling backpack comes with loads of pockets, including a weatherproof backpack sleeve, side pockets that will take a bike lock or a bottle, several reflective areas and a light loop.

The harness system is stable even when not using the waist strap and there's good airflow over your back. The straps are comfortable and come with tidy-aways so the ends don't flap around as you ride, but we found the helmet carry straps a bit fiddly to use.

We weighed the HAWG at 975g - lighter than Camelbak claims. If you don't need quite as much capacity though, it might be better to consider the 22 liter MULE , though.

Read more: Camelbak HAWG Commute 30L backpack full review

Best backpack that doubles up as a pannier bag

New Loox Varo which is one of the best commuter cycling backpacks

6. New Looxs Varo Bag

The New Looxs Varo does double duty as a backpack and a pannier thanks to removable shoulder straps and a built-in pannier rack mount. It's made of waterproof polyester with a roll-top closure and the seams are welded. The bag weighs 1.3kg and there's 22 liters capacity. Extras include side pockets and light loops.

The shoulder, chest and waist straps convert the Varo to backpack use. You can use it as a pannier with these attached, although they'll quickly get wet or dirty. As a backpack, we thought it was comfortable and well-padded and there's plenty of capacity.

What to look for in a cycling backpack for commuting

There's nothing stopping you from using a standard backpack for your cycle commute. However, those created with cycling in mind will tick a few boxes that might be neglected elsewhere. Here are the features to look out for:

Air channels for breathability

Chances are your body temperature will rise as you ride. Therefore, a good cycling-specific backpack will cater for this with channels at the rear or the use of mesh or more breathable fabrics.

Padded straps

You don't want the straps to put pressure on your back when you load up your pack, so look for padded straps that will promote comfort on the bike.

Chest/hip straps

Extra straps at the chest and/or hips will keep the pack in place - without these, you might find the pack swings from side to side or hangs over your shoulder when you get on the drops. These should ideally be adjustable, and some brands - such as Osprey - offer a greater amount of adjustability on female-specific packs so that the chest strap can fasten under or over the bust depending upon preference (as opposed to directly across).

Everyone likes to organise their kit into appropriate compartments, right?! A quality cycling backpack will have a selection of pockets so you can keep your lunch away from the rest of your luggage. Sections designed for tyre levers, tubes and a pump will be helpful too, as well as zipped compartments for valuables and side pockets for easy-to-reach access.

If you're cycling to work , you might also want to look for a laptop pocket with padding to keep your tech safe.

Waterproofing

If you cycle commute on a regular basis, it's likely you'll find yourself forced to ride in the rain at some point. Many packs come with waterproof removable covers, whilst some are simply constructed from a waterproof fabric. If you're looking for a fully waterproof option, check for taped seams which will help to keep the droplets out.

Reflective details

Whilst the number one requirement when riding in the dark is a good set of bike lights, reflective details are a good idea and many packs will come with these.

Hydration system

More often a requirement for mountain bikers, a hydration system could come in handy for a roadie who dabbles in off-road riding like cyclocross or gravel bike adventures.

More mountain bike-orientated packs will often come with a bladder, whilst those aimed more at road cyclists may just have a compartment that will fit a bladder and a loop at the shoulder where a drinking tube can be stored if used.

Whilst there is plenty of crossover with standard walking rucksacks, a cycling-specific backpack will be more comfortable when bent forward in a riding position on a bike. Commuters will often want to carry a tablet or a laptop, which are not usually needed when out hiking, so the ability to keep tech and other things separate from work clothes or your lunch is a desirable attribute for a commuting pack. Last but not least, some form of weatherproofing is vital for a bag that may be used year-round. With these criteria in mind, the bags on test were used and abused on and off the bike to determine their best features and possible weaknesses.

Best cycling backpacks 2024: commuting rucksacks rated and reviewed

The best backpacks for commuting and urban cycling in 2024

Simon von Bromley

The best cycling backpacks can make the difference between arriving at your destination with your stuff safe and dry or soaking wet.

The best commuter bikes are bound to have racks or mounts for panniers. But the best hybrid bikes might not, and a cycling backpack is less hassle. A small bag can carry your essentials, while a larger one can fit in your laptop and a change of clothes.

If you've invested in one of the best electric bikes for the commute, you might need a sizeable backpack to carry your battery and charger. It isn't wise to leave the best road cycling helmets locked to your bike, so consider if you can fit your lid in too.

Our expert testers have picked the best cycling backpacks on the market and put them through their paces.

We looked for backpacks with effective and dependable waterproofing or water resistance. This is perhaps the most important feature because if you're cycling to work , even only on nice days, you'll eventually get caught out by a freak rain storm.

On top of that, we looked for durable and easy-to-use closure systems, such as a roll-top or waterproof zips, and enough capacity to carry everything you're likely to need on a daily basis.

Because this guide is geared mainly towards cycling backpacks for commuting and urban use, we've focused on hi-viz or reflective options. If those colours aren't to your taste, many of them are also available in more muted tones.

Once you've worked your way through all of the reviews, keep reading for our buyer's guide to cycling backpacks .

Best cycling backpacks in 2024

Camelbak mule commute 22l.

Camelbak Mule Commute 22L backpack

  • £120 as tested
  • Pros: Lightweight; weatherproof laptop sleeve
  • Cons: Black only

Camelbak's Mule Commute 22 is a lightweight, low-volume cycling backpack and a shrewd choice for the sprightly commuter.

The padded and weatherproof laptop section has a wraparound closure for added protection. There are also two zipped internal pockets.

The bag’s ‘weather-resistant’ outer has a clip for your helmet, comfortable raised pads to keep your back from overheating and three elasticated open pockets.

Two secure pockets on the bag’s arm straps make items easy to grab when the Mule Commute 22 is strapped to your back.

While the bag comes only in black, 360° reflective details will help you be seen at night and a light can be clipped on.

The bag is compatible with Camelbak's reservoirs (not supplied).

Lomo Hi-Viz Dry Bag

Lomo Hi Viz 30l Cycling Dry Bag for commuting on a bike

  • £32.99 as tested
  • Pros: Spacious; waterproof; durable
  • Cons: Little ventilation for your back

The Lomo Hi-Viz Dry Bag is big, tough, waterproof, bright, cheap and its hi-vis fluorescent yellow PVC is decked in reflective stripes.

So what are the downsides? Well, you’ll get a bit sweaty on longer rides or when carrying heavy kit, but this 30-litre PVC bag will swallow all your belongings and keep them bone dry, thanks to the roll-down top and welded seams.

It lacks any extras, but for under £40 we really aren’t complaining.

Osprey Transporter Roll

Osprey Transporter Roll commuter backpack with 25l capacity

  • £95 as tested
  • Pros: Comfortable; practical
  • Cons: Not waterproof

The Osprey Transporter Roll is a smart-looking rucksack that is comfortable and practical, but not fully waterproof.

There is a large main compartment with an organiser section, laptop sleeve and mesh pockets. The roll-top design enables you to adjust capacity, increasing the 25-litre volume a bit or reducing it to stop belongings from moving around.

The back panel is secure and the shoulder straps are comfortable when you're on the move.

  • Read our full Osprey Transporter Roll review

Altura Thunderstorm City 30

Altura Thunderstrom City 30L

  • £79.99 as tested
  • Pros: well-ventilated; all-round visibility
  • Cons: No exterior pockets

Altura’s Thunderstorm bag adds little reflective dashes all over the sides, back and bottom for highly effective, all-round visibility. If the hi-vis yellow version is a little too loud for you, it's also available in black.

The 30-litre compartment has a laptop sleeve and two internal pockets, but the outside’s clean lines are completely pocket-free.

There’s a light loop, the roll-top is cinched with a metal buckle for effective waterproofing and the padding is well vented, which prevents sweat build-up.

Chrome Barrage Cargo 22X

Chrome Barrage Cargo 22X commuting backpack with 22l capacity

  • £190 as tested
  • Pros: Waterproof; additional cargo net capacity
  • Cons: Pricey

Chrome bags have a reputation for lasting a very long time , and the seriously constructed Barrage looks to continue that tradition.

The bag has a welded-seam waterproof tarpaulin liner and an abrasion-resistant exterior.

An exterior cargo net provides extra carrying potential.

The downside of the strength is the weight of this bag and it takes a few rides to wear in the straps.

  • Read our full Chrome Industries Barrage Cargo 22X review

dhb Slice 30L

DHB Slice 30L backpack

  • £45 as tested
  • Pros : Rain cover included
  • Cons: Shoulder strap padding could be better

The dhb Slice is a stylish, affordable and well-made backpack for commuting and day-to-day travels.

The chest and removable waist straps are comfortable, but the shoulder straps' padding could be better.

Although not waterproof itself, the Slice has a bright yellow waterproof cover that aids visibility, as do the reflective graphics.

The 30-litre capacity is relatively large. Two external zipped pockets for valuables, a front pouch, two water bottle outlets and a helmet net add to the Slice's versatility.

Elops Speed 100

Elops Speed 100 20l commuting bag from Decathlon

  • £30 as tested
  • Pros: Affordable; good usability
  • Cons: No zipped pockets; limited protection for laptops

If you're new to cycle commuting, the Elops Speed 100 is a good backpack option thanks to its low price and durability.

While the rucksack has a nominal capacity of 20 litres, the roll-top design means that can be extended a touch.

The light grey interior is a nice touch, helping you spot things when staring into the backpack.

It would be nice to have zipped internal and external pockets for valuables.

  • Read our full Elops Speed 100 review

Fox Transition Duffle Bag

Fox Transition Duffle Bag for commuting with 45l capacity

  • £100 as tested
  • Pros: Versatile
  • Cons: No laptop sleeve

The Fox Transition Duffle Bag is designed for travelling, but the large volume will be appreciated by anyone who has a serious amount of stuff to carry.

Despite its size, it never felt like it was swinging around or in danger of throwing you off balance. The padded straps with a mesh lining are also comfortable.

The bag is made from a 450 denier TPU-faced ripstop fabric, which is water-resistant.

There's no laptop sleeve but there are two exterior pockets with waterproof zips and one with a fleece lining to protect your cycling glasses .

Mission Workshop Speedwell

Mission Workshop Speedwell bag

  • £305 as tested
  • Pros: Durable; waterproof
  • Cons: Heavy (but you don't necessarily feel it)

The Mission Workshop Speedwell is a tough and waterproof backpack, thanks to its combination of X-Pac and MultiCam Cordura fabric.

The backpack can fit a hydration bladder, as you'd find in hydration packs , and has room for a 16in laptop.

The design of the Speedwell makes it highly versatile, with our tester using it for commuting, gravel riding and hiking.

The floating harness provides airflow while keeping the backpack stable. There are chest and waist straps to help customise the fit.

The bag's robustness does come at a 1.29kg weight, but the comfort means it doesn't feel heavy.

Ortlieb Atrack CR Urban

Ortlieb Atrack CR Urban commuter backpack with 25l capacity

  • £185 as tested
  • Pros: Secure; waterproof
  • Cons: High price

Thw atrack CR Urban is a high-quality, sustainably made rucksack from a leader in bike luggage, Ortlieb.

The 45-litre bag uses waterproof fabric and has well-placed back and hip padding. This helps avoid having the watertight zip dig into you, which is placed on the back of the rucksack.

Ortlieb has incorporated lots of features, including a daisy chain of attachment points on the outside, alongside stretch mesh side pockets.

The price is a significant outlay, but you'll likely end up using this bag for more than your daily commute.

  • Read our full Ortlieb Atrack CR Urban review

Osprey Radial

Osprey Radial backpack

  • £150 as tested
  • 26-34 litres
  • Pros: Well-equipped; well made
  • Cons: Bulky

The Osprey Radial is a substantial cycling backpack that can carry a lot. Undoing an internal zip extends the 26-litre capacity to 34l.

The adjustable mesh back makes space between you and the back panel, helping you avoid the dreaded sweaty back.

The hi-viz rain cover stows away in the base. A separate internal pocket can hold shoes away from the well-cushioned laptop and document sleeves.

Details such as plenty of pockets and a helmet clip are useful, but they add to the weight, bulk and price.

Oxford Aqua V20

Oxford Aqua V20 Backpack commuter backpack with 20l capacity

  • £54.99 / $64.95 as tested
  • Pros: Available in lots of different colours, excellent waterproofing
  • Cons: Can leave you sweaty

The Aqua has a simple design – an effective roll-top opening into a single 20-litre compartment – but it's available in loads of colours, all of which have extensive reflective details with 360-degree visibility.

With the top tightened, it proved impervious to water, with even the external pocket waterproof.

The bag is tough and easy to clean too, although it may leave you a little sweatier than some. It's bright, straightforward and well-priced.

  • Read our full Oxford Aqua V20 review

Proviz Reflect360

Proviz Reflect360 backpack

  • £69.99 as tested
  • Pros: Well-proportioned; high visibility
  • Cons: Water resistant rather than waterproof

The Proviz Reflect360 bag is grey but glows like the moon when light is shined on it, thanks to millions of reflective beads. A bike light can be strapped on to the front.

Inside, the laptop sleeve doesn’t fully close, but a large mesh pocket and a couple of smaller ones zip shut. The main compartment is roomy.

Outside, mesh pockets on either side are on the small side. A more spacious zipped front pocket will fit your phone, wallet and more.

The bag’s body is water resistant rather than waterproof (the zips are waterproof, however).

Thule Paramount

Thule Paramount backpack

  • Pros: Durable; rain cover included
  • Cons: Heavy

The Thule 27L Paramount is a well-crafted commuter backpack full of cycling-specific features.

These include the frontal opening for a bike lock and helmet, an enclosed hi-vis rain cover, stash areas for bottles and a covered eyewear/valuables compartment at the top.

The laptop area is sizeable and reinforced, and the main compartment has lots of room.

Thanks to comfortable straps and a breathable, supportive mesh back area, the Paramount is fine for short/mid-range commutes. However, the 1.43kg weight might rule it out of longer adventures.

Vaude ExCycling Pack

Vaude ExCycling Pack

  • Pros: Highly organised; rain cover
  • Cons: Shape can obstruct vision when looking over shoulder

With a high volume, the Vaude ExCycling Pack provides plenty of room for belongings. It isn't just a cavernous bag, though. There is a laptop sleeve, which can be accessed externally, and mesh organiser sections.

A rain cover helps to keep things dry. There is a water-repellent treatment should you get caught in a shower before you have time to unroll the cover.

The bag is well constructed from environmentally and ethically sourced materials, according to Vaude.

Our tester's only gripe was the wide and square shape obstructed the view when looking over their shoulder.

Also consider...

These bags scored fewer than four stars in our test, but are still worth considering.

Altura Grid Backpack

Altura Grid Backpack with 30l capacity

  • £60 / $74 / AU$97 / €66 as tested
  • Pros: Storage space without bulk

For one of the lightest cycling rucksacks at 578g, the Altura Grid Backpack is not short of outer or inner pockets, and has a laptop sleeve.

The roll-top can be zipped to keep contents – probably nothing more than day-to-day work items – secure.

But the Grid isn't made from particularly technical materials, so it's only water resistant and not the most hardy.

  • Read our full Altura Grid Backpack review

Ortlieb Commuter Daypack Urban Line

Ortlieb Commuter Daypack Urban Line

  • £155 /$225 / €159.99 as tested
  • Pros: Tough construction; lots of good details

Roll down the top of this high-quality PVC-free 21-litre bag and it will keep the dirt and rain out. It also has reflective stitching for night-riding safety.

Features include a light, D-lock loops and a padded laptop sleeve. The German-made PU-laminated Cordura and cotton blend bag has a reinforced base, comfortable back pads and adjustable, removable chest and waist straps for maximum versatility.

It's a fantastic bag… at a price.

Rapha Roll Top Backpack

Rapha Roll Top Backpack for commuting with a 25l capacity

  • £100 / $135 / €120 / AU$175 as tested
  • Pros: Looks good on- and off-bike
  • Cons: Poor comfort

The Rapha Roll Top belies its sleek design to incorporate handy commuting features. Made from water- and scratch-resistant fabric, the bag has divided internal pockets and a reflective base panel.

You can hook your bike lock through loops down the front of the bag, rather than take up space inside.

The Roll Top isn't really suitable for longer commutes, however, because if you're carrying a laptop it will press against your back through the sleeve.

dhb Waterproof Rucksack 25L

dhb Waterproof Rucksack 25L commuter backpack

  • £50 as tested
  • Pros: Waterproof
  • Cons: Our tester struggled with comfort

The dhb Waterproof Rucksack has sealed seams and a watertight zip to make it completely waterproof.

The construction is durable and the large size made packing straightforward. While there's no dedicated laptop sleeve, the waterproof design eases the water-ingress nerves.

The rucksack felt bulky and lumpy on the back, despite adjusting the straps. But this might be a compromise you're willing to make for the sake of keeping your possessions dry.

Buyer's guide to cycling backpacks

Do you really need a cycling-specific backpack.

Road cyclist riding with a Campagnolo backpack

It depends. If you're just looking to pop out for sunny pootles around your local park, then you'll probably be fine with any old backpack.

Just watch out for unexpected showers and think about lining your bag with a bin liner if you've got anything in there you don't want to get wet.

Those who cycle regularly or on mucky roads, though, will almost certainly appreciate the extra features cycling-specific backpacks offer. These usually include waterproofing, vented rear padding, increased visibility and mounts for locks and lights.

Backpack vs panniers

Rad Power RadWagon

When deciding between the best bike bags for commuting, you typically have two choices: a backpack or a pannier bag .

Most people riding short distances and carrying reasonably light loads are likely to be better off with a backpack rather than panniers.

The simplicity and take-anywhere nature of a backpack is hard to beat. A cycling backpack can also usually be pressed into double duty as a backpack for hiking or city use.

Panniers are great for touring, or for cyclists who want to carry larger or heavier loads, such as shopping, but you'll need to install a rack on your bike (assuming it has the requisite mounts), and they're usually more cumbersome to carry when off the bike.

If you're looking to transport really big loads, such as children or work equipment, you might even want to consider a cargo or electric bike .

Zips vs roll-top

Roll-top bags are usually what you see professional cycle couriers using, and for good reason. Zips are compact and flexible for shaping, but can be a weak point for waterproofing, and are also much more likely to wear out and break with heavy use.

A roll-top bag, on the other hand, can be opened/closed hundreds, if not thousands, of times without any major wear and tear. For this reason, many bags will use a combination of zipped pockets and roll-top main compartments. This helps maximise both durability and the convenience of having separate pockets for specific items.

How much capacity do you need?

CamelBak M.U.L.E. 15l mountain bike backpack

The majority of commuters carrying items such as a laptop, some spare clothes and valuables will generally need around 20 to 30 litres of space. Aspiring pro bike messengers might need up to 40 litres, but that's probably overkill for most people.

Those who commute during the winter will need a little more room for carrying bulkier jackets and the like.

Likewise, if you commute in bib shorts and a jersey with clipless pedals and cycling shoes , you'll probably want to change into something else at the end of the journey. Don't forget to factor in extra space for a change of clothes and shoes.

All things considered, it's probably best to have a little more room than you think you'll need – it's always going to be useful to have enough space to be able to pop to the shops on the way home.

More ways to carry your gear

If a cycling backpack isn't the right way for you to carry your possessions, an alternative is using bikepacking bags .

These bags typically attach to your bike with Velcro straps and can provide as much – or more – capacity.

With air travels, I often hear horror stories and seen videos where the baggage handlers treat the bike bag just like another suitcase.

One of the primary concerns most cyclists have is whether their bike makes it out from transit safely. The first thing I’d do when I pick up my bike bag at the airport is to do a quick inspection before leaving the airport.

Packing your bike in a cardboard bike box provides very little protection, and you risk it getting damaged during transit.

It’s worthwhile to invest in a bike bag, and even more importantly, know how to pack your bike correctly . No bike bag is 100% damage-proof but at least they do offer wy more protection compared to a cardboard bike box especially if the bike costs thousands.

On this page, I’ll discuss the difference between bike bags and share some of the popular ones used by cyclists to travel.

A Quick Glance : Our Favorite Bike Bags and Cases

Soft Shell Bike Bag : Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 “One of the lightest and easiest to pack bike bags.”

Hard Shell Bike Case : B&W Bike Box 2 “Value for money for a hard shell in terms of price vs the amount of protection.”

Soft Shell Bike Travel Bags

Scicon aerocomfort 3.0.

Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 Black

  • Type of Bike : Road
  • Compatibility : Quick Release, Thru Axle
  • To Remove : Wheelset
  • Weight : 8 kg

Scicon is arguably the most popular bike bag brand today.

It’s used by 7 out of 18 World Tour pro cycling teams in 2018 which includes the likes of Bora-Hansgrohe, Mitchelton-Scott, Bahrain-Medida, AG2R La Mondiale, and Quick-Step Floors.

The Aerocomfort 3.0 is the improved version of the very popular 2.0 version. Scicon has made several improvements based on customer feedback. The 3 most significant improvements are the addition of the thru-axles compatibility, new wheels system which was prone to breaking previously, and a reinforced internal bike mount.

It’s still without a doubt the lightest bike travel bag in the market today .

At only 8 kg, it’s even lighter than its already lightweight predecessor. With the bike packed inside, you’re definitely way below the 20 kg allowance that most airlines impose.

The thing I really liked about the Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 is the ease of packing and the minimal disassembly required. I’d say most first-timers would probably need less than 10 minutes to have their bike securely packed and ready to go.

  • Pros : One of the lightest and easiest to pack bike bags.
  • Cons : Smaller base can be unstable and prone to tilt over.

Evoc Bike Travel Bag

Evoc Bike Bag

  • Type of Bike : Road, TT, CX, MTB
  • To Remove : Wheelset, Handlebars, Saddle, Seatpost
  • Weight : 9.1 kg

Evoc is a German brand well-known for its outdoor and travel bags. This Evoc bag is among their most popular products in their lineup. The unique feature about the Evoc Bike Bag is its one bag fits all concept. The same bag can fit all bike types from road to time trial, cyclocross, and mountain bikes.

Evoc uses an interchangeable internal bike stand to mount bikes. Each type of bike would require a different type of stand due to its shape and design. If you’re buying this bag for your road bikes, make sure you remember to get the bike stand!

Packing wise, the Evoc Bike Travel Bag requires a bit more work by removing the pedals, seat posts, twisting the handlebars sideways, and removing the standard wheel.

The good thing with such removal is the bag packs down into a compact size, which makes the baggage handlers’ work easier. I bet you wouldn’t want an aggressive baggage handler handling your bags, don’t you?

  • Pros : Fits all types of bikes.
  • Cons : Outer layers are not as durable as advertised.

Thule Roundtrip Pro XT

Thule Roundtrip Pro XT

  • Weight : 8.6 kg

Thule is a Swedish company well known for its travel products. This mid-level bike bag has an internal bike mount that doubles up as a work stand, which will make assembling and disassembling your bike quick and easy.

Most road bikes will fit comfortably into the Thule Roundtrip Pro XT bag unless you’re riding anything above size 60, and it includes an adapter for thru-axles. It has a separate wheelset compartment so that your wheelset doesn’t come into contact with your bike frame.

The two roller wheels make it a snap to pull your bag wherever you need to go.

  • Pros : Internal bike mount can double up as a temporary workstand.
  • Cons : Soft case doesn’t provide 100% protection against rough baggage handlers.

Biknd Helium V4

Biknd Helium V4

  • Weight : 9.0 kg

Biknd is a Canadian brand that is all about developing innovative bike bags. In fact, their first product is the Helium bike bag which is now in its 4th version, hence the V4.

What makes the Biknd Helium V4 special is the unique way the protection mechanism is implemented. It uses inflatable airbags that strategically placed at both sides of the bag.

Packing the bike would require some disassembly work by removing the wheels, pedals, seat posts and twisting the handlebars sideways. To make packing easier, both the side and front panels can be opened completely.

Now if you’re traveling with 2 sets of wheels, you’re in luck because the bag can fit all of them. Unlike other bags where you keep one wheel on each side panel, the Biknd Helium V4 can hold 2 wheels on each side.

  • Pros : One of the best protection for a soft case.
  • Cons : Costs more than the average soft case.

Hard Shell Bike Cases

B&w bike box 2.

B&W International Bike Box 2

  • Weight : 11.5 kg

B&W is a German brand that has been making innovative outdoor bags since 1998. The Bike Box 2 is the successor to their original Bike Box and has won the prestigious 2018 German Design Award .

The B&W Bike Box 2 is among the lightest available. At almost 12 kg, you’ll most likely fall under the 20kg weight allowance most airlines allow.

However, take note that even though it can fit almost all types of bikes, you’d go above the allowable weight allowance should you fit a mountain bike, which is generally heavier than a road bike.

Packing is made easier with the two shells of the bag coming apart into 2 separate left and right. Once you’ve the bike disassembled, there are internal straps that hold it in place, and extra protection is achieved via the additional foam layers provided.

There’s no dedicated wheels storage compartment. B&W provides 2 separate wheel bags which are also placed inside the bag when you close it.

  • Pros : Most value for money for a hard case.
  • Cons : Smaller bag design means more to be removed when packing.

Thule Roundtrip Transition

Thule Roundtrip Transition Bike Bag

  • Weight : 12.0 kg

The Thule Roundtrip Transition is the hardshell equivalent of the Roundtrip Pro XT. In fact, it’s Thule’s top-level and most secure bike case.

It has a sturdy aluminum base and when combined with a strong ABS shell, it provides excellent protection to your bikes.

You can pack your road bike, TT, CX, or mountain bike with this bag, making it very versatile.

As a bonus, thru-axle adapters for 15mm and 20mm axles are included besides the standard quick release.

The unique thing about the Thule Roundtrip Transition bike case is the internal mounting stand can double up as a mobile work stand, making assembly/disassembly and maintenance easier when you’re traveling.

  • Pros : Very high-quality build from a reputable brand.
  • Cons : Heavier than the average hard case.

Scicon Aerotech Evolution X

Scicon Aerotech Evolution 3.0 Bike Travel Bag

  • Weight : 11.0 kg

The Scicon Aerotech Evolution has been around for 10 years now and the 3.0 is Scicon’s latest version which was released in late 2017. The major improvement made in this version is adding the thru-axles compatibility.

Without a doubt, the Aerotech Evolution is Scicon’s one of the most secure bike travel cases out there. With premium pricing, Scicon has ensured no corners are cut. The bag has been thoroughly tested to ensure maximum protection for your bike.

The hard shell is made of very durable and hardened plastic, or what Scicon likes to call, thermoplastic . Internally, there is padding everywhere for your bike frame and straps strategically located to hold them in place. It would require some additional work to pack your bike into the bag.

Unlike the Aerocomfort 3.0 where only the wheels are removed, you’ll need to remove pedals, seat posts and twist the handlebars in addition to that.

You probably notice by now that most hardshell cases are bulky and heavy. While it’s still bulky (the shape and size remains), Scicon has managed to bring down the weight by 1 kg compared to its predecessor by using newer and more advanced materials.

At 11 kg, the Scicon Aerotech Evolution 3.0 is among the lightest bike case available.

  • Pros : One of the lightest hard cases around and offers a very high level of protection.
  • Cons : Be prepared to pay more.

BuxomBox Ventoux

BuxomBox Ventoux Bike Case

BuxomBox is a small, UK-based company that specializes in bike boxes. In fact, bike boxes are their only product available.

The Ventoux Road is arguably the best one around when it comes to maximum protection. Its entire construction is top quality. With that, it also comes with a premium price tag. You’ve been warned.

For starters, the BuxomBox is made entirely from aluminum. It’s the same 6061 aluminum that’s used to make high-end aluminum race bikes. Not only do they look really good, but they’re also very durable and impact-resistant.

There are 3 sizes for you to choose from, depending on your bike size. Besides, you can also choose whether to support quick release, through-axle, or both.

With 4 handles, 2 at the top and 2 at the sides, you can maneuver the bag around the airport with ease. The 2 fixed and 2 caster wheels make things even easier.

  • Pros : Good looking, lightweight, and maximum protection.
  • Cons : Packing can be a chore for first-time users.

Bike Travel Cases Buying Guide

1. type of bikes.

This is the most important thing to consider when buying a bike bag or box.

The type of bike you’re planning to travel with will determine the bag’s shape and dimension and the box you’ll need.

Some newer ones like the Evoc Bike Bag , Buxom Box Ventoux , and Thule Roundtrip Transition can fit all bike types.

While it’s obvious that the bike frame of a road, cyclocross (CX) , time trial (TT), and mountain bike look different, there are more to that.

Among other differences are the handlebar’s shape, wheel hub width, and wheel size and diameter.

Geek Tip : Some bike travel cases are bike-specific, whether it’s for road, TT or mountain bike. Make sure you’re buying the right variant.

2. Quick Release vs Thru Axles

Quick Release vs Thru Axles

Today there are 2 types of braking systems for road bikes.

Traditionally, all road bikes use caliper brakes but disc brakes are getting popular recently for their better braking capabilities especially in the wet.

The mechanism used to attach the wheels to the bike is different between these two.

  • Quick Release. The QR was invented by Tullio Campagnolo and has been around for more than 90 years. It’s a wheel locking mechanism found in all road bikes with caliper brakes.
  • Thru Axles. The TA was first introduced in mountain bikes in the ’90s. Today, it’s used in all disc brakes road bikes. The axle needs to be pulled out completely to remove the wheels.

Why is this important?

The bike frame has a different design at the dropouts to accommodate either Quick Release or Thru Axles. And so does the bike bag to fit the different dropouts especially if they have an internal mounting stand.

Geek Tip : Newer travel cases are compatible with both quick release (caliper brakes) and thru axles (disc brakes) through an adaptor.

3. Ease of Packing

You’ll need to do some disassembling to pack your bike. You’ll need some of the common bike tools such as hex and torx wrenches .

The amount of disassembly needed depends on the bike travel case, but in general, this isn’t too hard to accomplish. If in doubt, you can always check out YouTube .

Thule Bicycle Travel Bag

All bike travel cases are designed to fit bikes without the wheels, so no matter the make or model, you should expect that removal of the wheels will be necessary.

Some travel cases like the Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 require minimal disassembly, while all bike boxes require quite a number of components to be removed prior to packing.

Generally, the list below needs to be removed :

  • Rear Derailleur
Geek Tip : How good you’re with the wrench is an important factor when it comes to choosing a bike bag or box that suits your needs.

4. Airline Weight Allowance

If you’re planning to fly with your bike, weight can be an important consideration. Most airlines have a check-in baggage weight allowance between 20 to 30 kg.

Bike boxes weigh more (anywhere between 12 to 18 kg) due to the hard and solid materials used.

On the other hand, bike bags weigh less, between 8 to 12kg, and can be carried more easily when you’re on the move.

Depending on your bike’s weight, you’ll probably end up with around 16 to 25kg baggage check-in weight.

Bike Bags vs Bike Cases : Which is Better?

You’ll often see cyclists pack their bikes either in a bike bag or a bike case. So you’d probably be wondering;

Which one is better to transport for you?

Bike bag or bike case?

  • Bike Case is the harder version and provides the most protection for your bike and is very durable. They’re made from tough materials like thermoplastics. It’s also sometimes referred to as a hard case or hard shell.
  • Bike Bag is the softer version that typically has internal structures to maintain the bag’s shape and protect your bike. The soft outer sides are made from nylon or canvas which could be vulnerable to tears over time. Some refer to it as soft shellbags.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which bike bag can fit my road, TT, and mountain bikes?

I understand that some of us have a few bikes and the bike we travel with depends on the type of riding we’re going to do.

In this situation, I recommend you consider a bike bag that is one size fits all. Generally, these bike bags don’t have internal mounts which limits your choice of bikes.

Have a look at the Biknd Helium V4 or the B&W International Bike Box 2 .

2. How do I provide additional protection to my bike on top of what’s provided by the bike bag or box?

There are several ways to do this. You can either,

  • Buy additional foam paddings and wrap them around the top tube, down tube, seat stays, and fork.
  • Use a cable tie to tie the chain to the chainring to avoid it from falling off.
  • Remove the rear derailleur if it gets in the way.

3. What is the lightest bike bag and box available today?

Many cyclists concur that the Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 is the lightest bike bag today. At only 8 kg, you’ll have plenty of weight allowance left to pack your bike.

For the bike box, you can choose from either the Scicon Aerotech 3.0 or the B&W International Bike Box 2 .

Evoc Road Bike Bag Pro

1. Evoc Road Bike Bag Pro

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Road Bike Bag Pro pairs a soft lower and hardcase upper to offer protection without being too heavy. It includes an aluminium tray inside that attaches to the axles of the bike inside the bag, holding it secure and out of harm's way when in transit. This can double up as a workstand too, if you remove the pedals.

To pack, only the pedals and wheels need to come off, and the saddle may need lowering. Then the frame is secured with a range of Velcro straps and purpose-built padding, the wheels go into individual wheel bags, and there's plenty of space to fill with kit, which doubles up as extra protection.

There are internal pockets for tools and pedals, as well as an external pocket for the roller-skate-style wheel, which can be removed to prevent damage.

The internal braces that add structure to the soft lower half are necessary, but they are stiff, so can hurt your hands when trying to get them in and out. The stitching between the upper and lower might also need care, as ours has started to show signs of wear.

Despite that though, this is still the best bike travel case if you want to avoid any wasted time on your trip. Just check out our Instagram reel for how quickly Josh can unpack his bike for proof.

Scicon AeroComfort 3.0

2. Scicon AeroComfort 3.0 Road Bike Travel Bag

The beauty of the Scicon AeroComfort 3.0 TSA is you can pack your bike without turning a single bolt (unless you have thru-axles); all you have to do is remove the wheels.

With a rigid Frame Defender metal base, the bike slots in using your quick-release or thru-axles, and comes with plenty of additional padding and a gear bag that's secured to the base under the downtube.

At 9kg empty, the bike straps into the bag securely, and the 360-degree wheels allow for easy one-handed dragging. With all of that said, we’ve seen baggage handlers stack Scicon bags upside down on baggage carts on multiple occasions so they won’t roll away, so consider some additional padding for your handlebars and shifters.

Bike box Alan Triathlon aero easyfit bike box

3. Bike Box Alan Triathlon Aero Easyfit

Bike Box Alan makes a number of hard case bike boxes in Yorkshire, UK. The Triathlon Aero easy fit is the largest bike box the company produces and with a max width of 50cm means there is no need to disassemble the front end of your bike to pack it into the box.

All that is required is to remove your wheels and pedals and you're good to go, making this box a great option for time trial or triathlon bikes, road bikes with more complex integrated handlebars or cable routing or for people who just don't want the extra hassle.

The boxes are available in six different colours, we tested the red version. You can also choose customisable stickers and the box carries a 7-year manufacturing warranty as well as a range of spare parts.

Best for MTB and Road

Best bike travel cases, bags and boxes: PRO

4. PRO Mega Bike Travel Case

With room to easily swallow road, TT and mountain bikes , the Pro Bike Mega Case is huge and features an aluminium base frame which connects to your bike at the axles. With so much room inside the case, the seatpost doesn't need to be removed, just lowered, and in most cases, you can get away with simply spinning your bars.

The inside of the bag has plenty of well-padded provisions to hold your frame securely, and even with the four 360-degree wheels at the bottom, the bag tracks easily in a straight line but it can be cumbersome in crowded baggage claim areas or train stations.

The outer fabric seems to mark a bit in transit, however, it's robust and weighing a hair over 8kg you should be able to get your bike and a bit of extra gear inside before you tip into overweight baggage territory.

Thule Roundtrip Bike travel case on a white background

5. Thule Roundtrip bike travel hard case

There are some bike travel cases that require a lot of disassembly and others that don't. The Thule Roundtrip Bike Travel Case falls into the category that requires taking things apart but they've been smart to embrace the concept. Parts of the bag that add support and protection come out and assemble into a work stand. There's even a clever triangle that you rotate to match your desired front axle standard.

You can use the work stand to keep the bike supported and at a comfortable working height while you either get it ready to travel or get it ready to ride. It's a good enough work stand that although we have a list of the best bike repair stands you might be able to get away with a two for one purchase if you aren't much of a home mechanic.

Best bike travel cases, bags and boxes: BW International

6. B&W International Bike Box II

Sometimes simple is best, and that's precisely what the B&W International Bike Box II has to offer. There are no complicated packing procedures - instead, you get a few layers of foam to protect the frame from the wheels and box, and it all fits inside two interlocking plastic sides.

The clamshell design utilises six self-tightening Velcro buckles to prevent the case from slipping open, and it features a surprising number of handles given the design. B&W International has updated the case with a new plastic designed to flex and not crack, and there are no latches or hinges to break.

With room for up to a 62cm frame, the case rolls on four wheels, two fixed and two free rotating and weighs 11kg with the included padding.

Integrated airbags

Best bike travel cases, bags and boxes: biknd

7. Biknd Helium V4

Using unique inflatable partitions and strategically placed rigid reinforcements, the Biknd Helium V4 is one of the most well-padded cases of the bunch. With the ability to carry two wheelsets, the Helium bag puts two airbags on either side to absorb impacts while the rigid base and front cover protect fragile handlebar components.

The bag opens flat to simplify packing, and the bike connects to the frame at the axles. There are special compartments for your pump, helmet and shoes and sturdy end caps to prevent hubs from poking through the bag.

Even with the airbags, the Helium is not all that light tipping the scales a 9kg, but it does offer considerably more padding than any other soft case.

Orucase B2 bike bag

8. OruCase B2

While many airlines are abandoning the extra fees for checking bikes, some still haven't taken note, and that's where the OruCase B2 comes in handy. Travelling with the OruCase B2, when asked by desk agents what's in the bag we've told them everything from massage tables and trade show gear, to 'it's just a really weird duffel bag’ — just make sure you’re not wearing a bike t-shirt, trust us.

The OruCase sneaks in under most airlines’ maximum external dimensions limits for baggage and features plastic armour panels that are backed by foam to keep your ride safe. You'll need to remove your pedals, handlebars, front brake, fork and seatpost, and the bag is still a tight fit, but it comes in two sizes to fit a range of frames.

Weighing in at under 7kg empty, there is plenty of free weight for you to fill the bag with riding clothes (which also work great as extra padding), and there are plush backpack straps to help you get around with minimal fuss.

Best for simplicity

Best bike travel cases, bags and boxes: Bike Box Alan Premium

9. Bike Box Alan Original Premium

The Bike Box Alan Premium is a hard case box that claims to fit road bikes up to 65cm in size. Our 58cm test bike had plenty of room to spare, so we're confident the claim is true. It is a super sturdy, hard-wearing box that comes with a seven-year warranty.

The solid plastic case takes the brunt of all heavy-handed impacts while your bike is in transit, and the inclusion of an anti-crush pole prevents lateral pressure on your chainstays and forks, should your chosen airline decide to stack your bike at the bottom of the pile. There is a weight penalty, however - an empty box weighs in at 11.2kg.

Two layers of foam padding prevent damage from within, and the myriad Velcro straps and internal instructions make packaging a straightforward process.

Removal of your handlebars, seatpost, wheels, pedals, and rear derailleur is required, which does take up some of your precious ride time but for the protection on offer, it's a sacrifice worth making.

Topeak Pakgo X Bike Carrier

10. Topeak PakGo X

The Topeak PakGo X is a bit like the kind of carry-on luggage you'd recognize on every flight except it's super-sized. Once packed the bike sits with the fork facing the ground and the tail of the bike up in the air. This means a more upright outer silhouette that's easier to manoeuvre.

More important than the orientation of the bike though is the well-thought-out protection. There are a number of protective elements and each one has a label on it. As you are packing it's easy to find which piece goes where and every part of the bike is both protected and securely held to avoid movement in transit. You will need to remove the bar and stem, saddle and seatpost, rear derailleur, and wheels but there's a place for everything.

The one thing to be aware of is the weight of the case. Topeak lists the weight as 10 Kg for the case only but that's not how you'll use it. Instead, you'll want to look at the 12.8 Kg weight that includes all the protective pieces. Unless you have a lightweight road bike it's unlikely you will avoid overweight fees.

What to look for in bike bags, travel cases and boxes

There are quite a few considerations when choosing the best bike bag or case for your bike. We'll break these down below, to help you to make an informed choice of the best bike bag for your needs.

Hard or soft shell?

Hardshell bike travel cases were the best way to travel with a bike for quite some time; however, engineers at bike brands are pretty clever and softshell bags are nearly on par for protection, weigh less, and often have removable ribbing so they can be neatly rolled up for storage.

How much does empty weight matter?

With a plastic base, wheels, internal skeleton, and robust materials, bike travel cases are heavy before you put anything inside, and some are pudgier than others.

Most airlines will give you 23kg / 50lbs before they hit you with an exorbitant overweight baggage fee, some budget airlines even less. If your bag weighs 12kg empty, when you pack a 6.8kg lightweight road bike, shoes and a track pump you'll be nudging up against that limit.

What size do I need?

Are you just looking to travel with just your road bikes, or will you be taking trips with your mountain bike too? Are you riding an aero road bike with integrated handlebars or TT bars? Are you riding an XL frame?

These are all things to take into account when shopping for a bike bag because some of the more compact options are simply too small for certain bikes and frame sizes.

Do I need to disassemble my bike?

No bike bag will take your bike fully assembled, but some require considerably more disassembly and mechanical acumen than others. At the very least you’ll have to pop your wheels off, but some bags also require you to remove your seat post, handlebars, and even the fork.

That's going to cut into riding or relaxing time once you get to your destination and require you to carry more tools to rebuild your bike. As mentioned above, a torque wrench is essential if you're going to have to reassemble delicate components.

Do I need to worry about wheels and handles?

For something designed to help you move around with a bike in tow, bike travel cases and bike bags can be, unsurprisingly, awkward and cumbersome to move around with.

If you want to avoid a back injury, a set of wheels should be a minimum requirement, especially if you're walking much after you land - some bike bags even use easily replaceable roller blade wheels, as they're prone to damage when being loaded and unloaded.

In addition, you'll want plenty of handles to help you hoist your bag onto a conveyor belt or into the back of a car.

Do I need to remove my derailleurs and rotors?

Take them off. Just about every bike bag out there comes with some sort of protection for your rear derailleur and brake rotors, but airlines have a knack for rendering them ineffective.

Learn from our mistakes and just take them off. The last thing you want is to start your holiday with a bent rotor or a broken derailleur hanger. If you are removing disc-brake rotors, don't forget to put a brake block in the caliper to prevent the pads sticking together or the pistons getting stuck - in a pinch, a folded over business card works, too.

What's the fastest way to get my bike back together?

Saddle height and bar roll aren’t something you often think about until either one is a little bit off, and the last thing you want to do on your riding vacation is to pull over constantly and faff with minor adjustments. A couple of dots and lines with a paint pen will allow you to replicate your preferred position on the bike first try, every time.

Should I add extra padding?

Yes, we have just spent the last few hundred words saying how great the best bike travel cases, bags and boxes are, but there's nothing wrong with a bit of added peace of mind.

Some bags come with foam tubing, however pipe insulation is perfect for an extra layer of protection. You can also pop into your local bike shop, and if you ask nicely, they're likely to have plenty of spare packaging from a newly unboxed bike.

If you have a few spare kilos in your bike bag once it's packed, throw your shoes, riding clothes, bars and gels and whatever else will fit without tipping your bag over the limit. If you've paid for 23kg / 50lbs, you may as well use it, although be aware that some airlines stipulate that a bike bag should contain nothing but your bike.

Do I need to deflate my tyres?

When you’re packing your bike, take a second to let the air out of your tyres. Airlines don’t allow anything pressurised into the cargo hold because it violates civil aviation safety regulations.

Before the engineering types slide into the comments, yes we know that the cargo hold is pressurised to ~10,000ft which will only add ~3-4psi to your tyres, and it’s extremely unlikely a tyre will burst in transit.

The reason you need to take this step, is because if you do send your bike through with the tyres inflated, there is the distinct possibility that an airline employee will pull your bag aside and attempt to deflate them. At the very least, it'll mean someone heavy-handedly rummaging through your neatly packed case, but we’ve heard horror stories of bags and tyres cut.

Avoid the drama and just let the air out. If you're running tubeless, drop them to a reasonable PSI that won't result in a sealant shower.

Is there anything else I should consider?

If you need to remove your handlebars , put the faceplate back on your stem so you don't lose the four bolts.

If you need to remove your stem, refit the top cap, then a zip tie around the steerer will keep your fork, headset and spacers from rattling loose. Be careful not to damage the steerer when cutting the zip tie off.

If you have Di2, unplug the battery. At the very least, it'll save some battery life, but it may also prevent your tightly packed derailleurs from shifting in transit and overworking the motor.

If you have an internal seatpost wedge clamp, remove and pack it safely. You don't want to spend the first hour of your trip fishing it out of your frame.

Take a spare derailleur hanger with you. For the price, it's worth having a spare anyway, not least when thousands of miles from home.

Some airlines will let CO2 cartridges through, but others will stop the bike and remove them. If you're going to risk it, make them easy to find so the baggage handler doesn't have to empty your entire bag.

If you're using zip ties to hold things in place, you'll need cable cutters or scissors in your case for unpackaging at the other end. You'll also need more ties for the return journey. Maybe pack a screwdriver that'll allow you to undo the zip ties without cutting them. Not only does it save you zip ties, it saves the planet from a little bit of single-use plastic.

Take your tools. If you're having to disassemble your bike to fit it in the box, you'll need to reassemble it at the other end - make a note of the tools used and don't forget to pack them. Especially your torque wrench. You don't want a 90km/h descent of Alpe d'Huez with badly torqued carbon handlebars.

Bottles are a great hardshell for storing potentially damaging things - e.g. allen keys, or items that will pop if crushed - gels, suncream, toothpaste. Wrap them in a carrier bag, though, or you might have oddly flavoured water on your first ride. Shoes are equally useful for this.

If you've got space in the bike bag, wrap your cycling kit in plastic bags and fill the gaps. Not only does this leave room in your other bag, it will act as padding.

Don't forget food. Your riding holiday is likely going to involve increased mileage, and speaking from experience, you can't always trust the local tuna sandwich.

The crew at Cyclingnews is a dedicated group of cyclists who, just like you, care deeply about their bikes. When we travel, we have to trust baggage handlers just like you.

The main advantage of a backpack is its convenience. Simply pack all your essentials, throw it on your shoulders, and you're ready to go without the hassle of dealing with pannier hooks or impacting your bike's handling. Additionally, the ease of carrying off the bike makes backpacks one of the most popular ways of transporting stuff on the bike.

There are lots of cycling backpacks to choose from, ranging from super organised with lots of internal compartments, or super simple, lightweight single-compartment bags. The right one for you will depend on your preferences.

It's also worth looking out for reflective detailing for night-time visibility, plus waterproofing to keep you laptop dry in an unexpected downpour.

The best cycling backpacks: our top picks

Oxford Aqua Evo 22L Backpack

Oxford Aqua Evo 22L Backpack

The Oxford Aqua Evo 22L Backpack is a great pack that does exactly what it promises to do – carry your stuff comfortably, securely and dryly. If you're about town in all weathers, it's ideal.

Inside, the backpack features a laptop sleeve, a couple of smaller fabric pockets and a zipped mesh one, and outside there's an 18cm-deep pocket with a waterproof zip (17cm opening), which is pretty handy if you don't want to unroll the whole thing.

The shoulder straps are well padded (and mesh-backed for ventilation), and you get webbing chest and waist straps which are easily adjustable for a comfy, secure fit, as are the buckles for securing the opening.

Apidura Packable Backpack 13L

Apidura Packable Backpack (13L)

Apidura's Packable 13L backpack is an excellent cycle-specific backpack that squashes down to almost nothing when not in use. It's made from a tough, waterproof rip-stop polyester that measures 7 x 8 x 9cm in its packed form.

There are a surprising number of technical features too, such as adjustable straps, elasticated mesh pockets capable of carrying water bottles, reflective dots to add visibility on the bike, and most impressive is the fact that all the seams are tape-sealed for waterproofing – a real feat at this size, weight and price.

Also, it's worth noting that Apidura offers a lifetime materials and workmanship warranty, and will help with repairs where needed.

Proviz Reflect360 Cycling Backpack

Proviz Reflect360 Cycling Backpack

The Proviz Reflect 360 Backpack is a stunning way of boosting your visibility when riding at night. During the day the backpack is a subtle grey, but when a car's headlights fall on it, the entire bag reflects back the light.

As a backpack, the Reflect 360 fulfils its task well. It's spacious with a 30 litre capacity which is more than enough for a change of clothes, sandwiches and any other stuff you need to transport. There's a laptop sleeve too and the fabric has good waterproofing keeping your belongings dry in all but the very heaviest of downpours.

Craft Cadence Backpack

Craft Cadence Backpack

The Craft Cadence backpack is designed for commuting cyclists to carry pretty much everything they need in a stylish and comfortable manner. It's great quality and is waterproof.

There are three storage areas to the bag: the 21-litre compartment, and two zipped pockets on the outside. Inside the main compartment are two Velcro straps holding an eight-pocket organiser sleeve. This includes a pocket for a 15in laptop plus a large, zipped pocket. There's also an A4-sized pocket and some smaller ones, plus two pen holders with a key strap.

Osprey Metron 24

Osprey Metron 24

The Osprey Metron 24 is a great pack for commuters with a 24L total capacity and a grand total of 14 storage compartments and pockets, plus two compartments that hold covers.

Osprey makes the Metron using nylon from recycled sources, and it's said to be abrasion-resistant in case of a spill. The Metron 24 is about as feature-rich as they come, one of the great features being the helmet holder, and it offers brilliant practicality in a neat design.

You can get a smaller 18L messenger or 22L roll-top version if you know you'll need less capacity, but the 24L tested here might turn out to be the sweetspot for most.

Camelbak H.A.W.G Commute 30 Backpack

Camelbak H.A.W.G Commute 30 Backpack

The Camelbak H.A.W.G Commute 30 Backpack is a well-made commuter backpack that is capable of carrying heavier and bulkier loads comfortably. It is well-made and backed by a lifetime guarantee.

It's not completely waterproof but the majority of the bag is made from a tough, water-resistant material, as are the zips. If that isn't enough, there is a water-resistant internal bag that can also hold a laptop easily.

More highly rated cycling backpacks

Altura Heritage 12L Backpack

Altura Heritage 12L Backpack

Altura's Heritage 12L Backpack is part of their traditionally styled Heritage range and this canvas bag certainly looks the part. It's made from a 97% cotton, 3% polyester 12oz canvas, with a water-repellent wax finish that can (mostly) handle pretty heavy rain.

Inside is a padded sleeve designed for up to 15in laptops, plus a couple of mesh pockets, a zipped organiser pocket, and a keyring. The padded straps are adjustable, and the chest strap is removable too. The 12-litre main body closes with a zip and then rolls up for protection from rain.

Tester Lara said, "I found this size spot on for a day's commute – it takes a compact change of clothes, shoes, a laptop and the inevitable bits and bobs, though doesn't leave much space for shopping on the way home. The quite narrow shaping and thick fabric keep the contents all safe and secure, too."

Sundried Triathlon Backpack

Sundried Triathlon Backpack

The Sundried 50L Triathlon Backpack is a huge event weekender bag with so many useful pockets including four bottle holders, plus handy shoe and helmet compartments which standard rucksacks don't cater for very well. The Sundried helpfully separates these essentials for safe and easy-access storage.

Sundried's backpack measures 75 x 45 x 26cm with – as you might have guessed from the name – a capacity of 50 litres. That's a lot. With a bag so spacious that you can pack a serious amount of weight into it, it's great that it has a padded back and supportive straps that can be adjusted easily for a secure and comfortable fit.

While not strictly designed for commuting, reflective piping extends across all sides for visibility, so you could use the backpack for early morning or evening commutes, and 15-inch laptop sleeve made of mesh is also included.

Elops Cycling Backpack Speed 520

Elops Cycling Backpack Speed 520

The Elops Cycling Backpack Speed 520 is a waterproof pack from Decathlon and it's a thoroughly practical and versatile bit of kit that's ideal for commuting and more. The design is simple but not basic, with attention to detail in its zips, reflective strips and internal pockets, and despite its 25L size, it folds down quite compactly.

It's also comfy to wear thanks to chunky padding and supportive side straps that really hug as you move.

Apidura City Backpack

Apidura City Backpack

The Apidura City Backpack is a lightweight and fully waterproof backpack designed for urban riding and daily commuting. The City's simplicity is one of its most appealing features. The bag features a welded waterproof construction to keep your belongings dry in any weather and its features are minimalist, with only the essential pockets. The 20-litre capacity of this bag proved to be more than enough for carrying office essentials and even some extra for a weekend-long trip.

Inside, there's a suspended laptop sleeve for secure storage and the sleeve has one zipped pocket for storing pens or other small items you don't want to fish from the bottom of the bag. On the side, there's an easy-access zipped pocket for keys and the like. Otherwise, the bag is one single rectangular pouch with flap closure that's 50cm in height, which can be extended to 56cm, and 30cm wide.

Best cycling backpacks: how to choose and what you need to know

What size backpack is best for cycling.

There's a huge range of options in rucksacks for cycling, from bike-specific packs with lots of pockets and hidey-holes to help keep your stuff organised, to walking daypacks that can be used on the bike, to ultralight bags for minimalists.

You don't want to carry too much on your back, so our recommendation is around 20-30 litres, though we have listed a couple of bigger bags for those who absolutely must take along the kitchen sink.

Are cycling backpacks waterproof?

Yes, many of the cycling backpacks listed are at least water resistant with some of them being fully waterproof. Backpacks vary in how well they keep out the wet. Roll-top bags made from seam-welded waterproof materials will generally keep out almost everything. More conventionally-constructed bags need liners to keep clothes and electronics dry; some have built-in rain covers that help.

Is it hard to ride with a backpack?

Factors such as the weight of the backpack, its design and how well it fits will impact how easy or hard it is to ride with it. We would suggest buying an adjustable backpack so you can distribute the weight evenly on your back making it more comfortable and easier to ride with. Look for backpacks with adjustable straps, padding on the shoulders and back, and a ventilated design to further enhance comfort during rides.

The more you're going to carry, the thicker the padding on the shoulders and back needs to be. The downside of this is that a thickly-padded bag is more likely to make your back sweaty in hot weather, so look for cooling channels and vents in the padding to keep that under control.

As we've already mentioned, if you'd like to keep your back free of any extra weight and carry your luggage on the bike instead, consider  pannier bags and pannier racks instead. Just be aware that these will affect the total weight of your bike and the handling of it too, and it's important to make sure the weight is evenly distributed on each side of the bike.

What should I look for in a cycling backpack?

When choosing a cycling backpack, you should consider water-resistance, number of storage compartments, padding and reflective details.

In terms of the number of storage compartments, it's horses for course. Some love to have a place for everything, others prefer to rummage in one compartment. Tip for rummagers: get a bag with a light-coloured interior.

If you're using your backpack for commuting during the darker months it's important to consider reflective detailing. A backpack will cover a large part of your jacket in winter, so a bit of extra visibility is a good idea to compensate for the patches of reflective material that will be hidden. Proviz takes this to its logical conclusion with its Reflect 360 pack, which is entirely made from reflective fabric. If your pack doesn't have enough reflective patches, Proviz and others make reflective covers to boost your visibility.

Can I use a cycling backpack for other activities?

Yes, definitely. Cycling backpacks are often designed with many versatile features meaning you can use them for commuting, hiking, travelling to races and also for everyday use.

The Best Bags for All Types of Cyclists

Our expert tested dozens of cycling bags to determine the best for your bikepacking trips, commutes, and everyday rides.

Bike bags come in every conceivable shape and size. From tiny roll-ups that hold your flat-fix essentials to huge panniers for carrying days of groceries home for your family to bar bags to bring extra gear for a century and virtually anything else you can imagine.

Whether it's a bar bag or backpack, figuring out how to merge your equipment-carrying needs and lifestyle is a crucial part of the puzzle. And even knowing which brands create bags specifically for cyclists is part of the equation.

Cycling Bags Explained

What size do i need, materials, construction, and finish, how we tested.

Cycling bags are more than just a passing interest for me. Before working for Bicycling , I spent over a decade as a professional product designer, sewer, and manufacturer of shoes, bags, and apparel for several companies. With my experience in materials, sewing, and fabrication, I earned a Master of Science in textile design.

a watch on a wrist

Bags and riding are two of my biggest passions. I love learning about different materials, constructions, finishes, and more. Use this explainer and my test results to learn how to pick the best type, size, materials, and construction for your next cycling bag. And share this story with friends in the market for a new bag to help them make an educated selection. I tested and evaluated each bag in this story. I used them for bikepacking trips where I knew I would encounter certain weather conditions and on my local day-to-day jaunts around town getting work done. The tested bags were subjected to multiple days of high wear and use (such as bike commutes, flights, and cycling events). When not on the bike, many of the bags spent time in the back of my pickup truck or on the floor getting knocked around. Some even got completely saturated in the rain.

best bags

Many companies make great bags in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are square, some cylindrical, and one is even a half-donut shape. There is no shortage of great bar bags whether for your solo century, the local group ride, or a big gravel event.

orucase and outershell

The mark of a great bar bag starts with the materials used and ends with the ease of user experience. Although many exist, the bar bag adds more to your rides than takes away (ok, they will rob a few watts). Bar bags are a convenient and easy-to-access way to add more storage and keep the extra weight off your back. Whether switching from your local group rides or races and then the quick overnighter, getting a bar bag on and off a bike (or switching between different sizes) is a breeze.

Best Bar Bag

Outershell drawcord handlebar bag.

Drawcord Handlebar Bag

The Drawcord is my favorite bar bag for several reasons. In addition to the bag‘s tons of pockets (internal and external) to stash your gear, it leads the pack in flair. Outershell selects the best patterns for adding style and accessorizing your bike. I love the brand’s use of cow and camo prints across its product lineup. Next is the size—whether you have narrow or wide bars, this bar bag fits perfectly on every drop bar I tried it on (though I don’t recommend putting this on your aero bike with one-piece handlebars, as it might not be the easiest to access). The feature that makes this bar bag next to perfect is the easy one-hand opening and closure. Another big plus for the Drawcord, Outershell uses fully internal and external weather-resistant fabric on this bag. It provides the rider with dry and secure accessories or snacks.

Bar Bag Runner-Up

Orucase smuggler hc handlebar bag.

Smuggler HC Handlebar Bag

Orucase uses a new vinyl-lined grided material introduced across the range of on-bike accessories called Glacious that resembles the material used for billboard signage. I like how Orucase secures this bag to the bar. Many brands use nylon webbing or rubber straps to attach their bags, so the provided mini-Voile straps are a great addition. The exterior pockets could be rotated approximately 45 degrees upwards to prevent snacks or tools from falling out. The extra mollie strap across the front was an awesome addition for carrying extra knick-knacks or tools. The Smuggler HC is perfect for 30- to 60-mile rides where you are out with the homies smashing miles and having smiles.

These bags sit directly in the middle of your bicycle (the bike’s main triangle). Frame bags are great because they offer additional storage possibilities and capacity. Many frame bag users customize their bags to match their needs and personalities, whether they’re doing day rides or ultra-distance events.

With so many different makers in the market, knowing all of the materials brands use, the storage capacity, and their design is tough. An unfortunate downside of some frame bags—depending on whether you go for a half or full-frame bag—is interference with the space for your water bottles, especially if you’re on the smaller size rider like me. If you are a shorter-height rider, getting creative about your water storage or frame options may require you to go down the custom route. Thankfully many bag makers already incorporate this as a service in their business.

Best Frame Bag

Nittany mountain works fastpack 1/2 frame bag.

Fastpack 1/2 Frame Bag

Created by Evan Gross, Nitanny Mountain Works makes these bags using solar-powered energy in its Pennsylvania factory. Nittany uses a mix of materials in its designs, each serving a functional purpose to ensure whatever you're carrying stays with you and dry. Arriving with five mini-Voile straps, and multiple attachment points, fitting the Fastpack 1/2 to a bike is a breeze. The only hang-up is for riders of smaller-size bikes (like me) who may need the Fastpack Lite frame bag to get around frame designs. The bag is pretty standard and uses the standard two-zipper approach, but the mini-frame pump holder inside the main compartment is a welcome and thoughtful addition.

Frame Bag Runner-Up

Apidura expedition full frame pack.

Expedition Full Frame Pack

Like the Expedition Frame Bag (which is half of the Full Frame Bag), this bag is trusted by thousands of riders who explore remote landscapes. With four size options, this bag has the same seven attachment points as the Expedition plus one more to keep a hydration bladder in place. Apidura created a custom 3L hydration bladder that in the bag sits near your bottom bracket and crank. The Full Frame Bag differs from the Expedition in construction technique and material choice. Having recently updated the material to a custom three-layer laminated fabric, Apidura moved away from the original X-Pac laminated material. Another new update to the bag is the use of fabric welding. This mechanically bonds pieces via ultrasonic frequencies.

Seat and Saddle Bags

silca grinta roll top bag

The line between a seat bag and a saddle bag sometimes overlaps depending on the bag’s use and the riding scenario. Although some brands or riders use the terms interchangeably, I consider a seat bag just the essentials required for a daily ride (tools, CO2, tubes, etc.) while a saddle bag can store much more (a sleeping pad or a change of clothes, for example). A bag with more than 1 liter of capacity is a saddle bag; anything less is just a big seat bag. (However, the top-performing seat bag models in my testing are both called saddle bags by their manufacturer. 🤷)

Best Seat Bag

Orucase saddle bag hc.

Saddle Bag HC

Orucase created the Saddle Bag HC in two sizes—0.5L and 0.8L—both cost $35. Using a rubber strap to attach the bag to the rear of the saddle the bag’s interior remains weather-resistant to the elements thanks to the weatherproof zipper. The bag opens completely (like a hotdog bun) to access all your essential tools. It’s perfect for road, gravel, and mountain biking and accommodates different sizes of tools, tubes, and extras.

Seat Bag Runner-Up

Mission workshop mission saddle bag.

Mission Saddle Bag

This Mission Workshop bag is a no-nonsense seat bag with enough storage for one traditional butyl tube, two tire levers, two CO2 cartridges, a pump head, and a multi-tool. (You can fit more than one additional tube with a Tubolito.) Mission Workshop uses standard X-Pac material on all of its color options. The bag features a weather-resistant zipper and a Velcro-style attachment. Over a few months of use, the Seat Bag saw some degradation from normal wear and tear but the sizing is just right.

Best Saddle Bag

Apidura expedition saddle pack.

Expedition Saddle Pack

The original and updated Expedition received a material, construction, and subtle graphics update. While I tested the original, I can speak to the old and new material (having tested other products built with the updates). It's weatherproof and survived multiple trips in significant downstorms. The bungee allows for a quick stash of a jacket or a stack of bananas. Plus, the two light attachment points are surrounded by reflective graphics. This bag comes in three volume options that allow the rider to hone the kit they bring to fit the needs of the trip or the event.

Saddle Bag Runner-Up

Silca grinta roll top bag.

Grinta Roll Top Bag

Designed for when seconds count in an ultra-distance race, the bag is also great for a quick overnighter or extremely minimal camping setup. Silca bags come with BOA closures and a recycled PET material that is laminated lined. Three folds of the Roll Top closure inherently prevent moisture, dirt, or contamination from making it to your cargo. The BOA closure helps secure the bag to the seat post and saddle rails and also helps take up any volume not used by compressing the bag.

Top Tube Bags

Top tube bags are handy for carrying quick-access items. Located typically on the top tube fixed to the stem or via top tube bolts, these bags come in many shapes and sizes. They’re perfect for gels, small snacks, or even a camera. Some people use these bags to carry a spare battery bank and charge their devices such as GPS computers or lights on longer rides.

Depending on the brand, some top tube bags use hook and loop-style attachments while others use top tube bolt mounts (if your bike has them). One important feature that should be present in any top tube bag is the option (when sealed) to run cables to charge lights and house sensitive electronics if necessary, this ensures anything and everything is protected from the elements.

Best Top Tube Bag

Apidura racing top tube pack.

Racing Top Tube Pack

Apidura Racing Top Tube Bag is the lightest we tested in the segment and uses a magnetic closure to seal the interior away from foul weather. Using a proprietary fabric developed by Apidura, the bag features an ultralight laminate (different from the brand’s typical 3-layer fabric). A benefit of this bag is its ability to open completely for access to the interior. This top tube bag proved its worth by keeping my important batteries and chargers dry from the elements while camping above the tree line at Mount Shasta, California.

Top Tube Bag Runner-Up

Orucase top tube bag hc.

Top Tube Bag HC

Featuring a magnetic closure, 3-point attachment, and the option to run it mounted to top tube bolts it is a very well-designed bag using premium finishing details like a bungee cord with line loc. The easy one-handed access to the interior compartment is due to the magnetic closure that does well at maintaining moisture out of the bag. Yet the interior became saturated when the top reached its saturation point. This was the heaviest bag we tested in this category and features an opening to run cables around your stem.

For some, the word “pannier” might conjure up thoughts of cycle touring from decades past with big bulky wax canvas bags attached to rickety racks. But a lot has changed in bag tech in the past several years. Panniers are a great way to carry large amounts of stuff on a bike ride. Many brands make excellent panniers for touring and bags for carrying groceries, commuting, or bikepacking.

A front or rear rack is needed to use panniers but if your bike’s fork has 2- or 3-bolt mounts, it opens another level of other new bag options and accessories. Many gravel and adventure bikes feature fork-carrying capacities. These enable riders to attach extra bottle cages or dry bags directly to the fork. A big thing to remember is the increased likelihood of toe and heel strikes with any fork or rear rack setup. If this happens on your bike, you may want to adjust the setup to lessen the occurrence.

Best Pannier

Outershell pico panniers.

Pico Panniers

The Pico Panniers, are a winner based on the extensive range of colors, patterns, and overall flare. These bags are a fun way to show personal style while keeping your belongings dry. Using 1000D Cordura for the exterior and an Ecopax EPLX weatherproof liner, this pannier kept everything we carried dry and secure.

One of the bag’s unique features is the ultra-tough polycarbonate plates that can be mounted with the provided hardware to two or three-point bottle bosses on your fork. Outershell even developed a nifty solution for suspension forks (though you may want to cover the fork legs with thin padding). With an expanding rolltop design, the bags grow to accommodate a range of gear, including some small pots and pans. The exterior pocket is secured via a clip buckle that doubles as a compression strap. It also has two additional compression straps running across the bag to secure and compress any other items.

Pannier Runner-Up

Rei co-op link pannier.

Co-op Link Pannier

At 18L, this pannier was the largest volume we tested. It weighs 560 grams and comes with two additional small dry stuff stacks to store any sensitive equipment or items you may bring along. The Link has four hooks and loops with Velcro closures and a single plastic attachment point.

In our testing, the bag could not attach to some racks due to the positioning of the two bottom straps. Otherwise, the bag felt secure and in place, thanks to the plastic honeycomb plate stitched inside. With one exterior pocket (able to accommodate a water bottle, the roll-top closure and volume are managed by nylon webbing and plastic hardware. If you need to attach anything extra bits like blinky lights you can thanks to the additional reflective trim that serves as an attachment point.

Other Types of Cycling Bags

Fanny packs, hip bags, slings, backpacks, totes, and duffels are other popular bag options for carrying stuff when riding or traveling. But let’s primarily focus on bike commuter needs: getting to work, grocery shopping, and traveling around town. Many brands manufacture these bags with high abrasion resistance materials and fabric and weatherproofing features since they are subjected to the everyday grind and often see daily use by riders. Selecting a bag that fits your needs (and bike) is personal because no two riders’ needs are identical. Select a bag based on your essential everyday carrying items (EDCs) like a laptop, iPad, headphones, water bottle, or keys. Knowing the bag’s features before you purchase it is important. My EDCs depend on the projects I am working on that day. For example, looking in my commuting bag right now, these items include a laptop, an iPad, three cameras, a change of clothes, a towel, shoes, a notebook, and a hard drive. Plus I have some pencils, pens, markers, a water bottle, and a bag of coffee. But other days it might be as simple as my laptop, a small camera, and a pencil and notebook.

Figuring out what your essentials are will help narrow down the choices of bags. If possible, check out the bag in person at a dealer or from a friend before buying.

Best Cycling Backpack

Chrome urban ex backpack 20l.

Urban Ex Backpack 20L

Having tested this bag’s original version for over a decade (and repaired it to keep it alive), I know firsthand how the Urban Ex stands up to use. The updated design improves on the original. With a minimal approach to design and construction, this bag features a 500D polyurethane coating on the surface and TPU backing. Its 150 recycled polyester liners keep your belongings bone dry. Tested in the 20L version, its open catch-all design accommodates clothing and smaller bags. It also has a dedicated laptop sleeve, pen holder, and other pockets for small items. The loops on the exterior make a great place to throw your U-lock. Overall, this is a great bag for commutes to the office or school, with stops at the grocery store or bodega on the way home.

R6 Arkiv Field Pack 20L

Mission workshop r6 arkiv field pack 20l.

R6 Arkiv Field Pack 20L

One of Mission Workshop’s flagship bags, the R6 Akriv Field Pack comes in a standard 20L size (with options to grow the system with Mission’s Arkiv-compatible bags). Using a high-quality HT500 D nylon exterior, it is offered in various colors to customize your bag to your personality. With one exterior weatherproof zipper and a dedicated internal laptop sleeve, the bag is very straightforward. With no other options for storage, this bag shines in tandem with its other modular accessories.

Best Fanny Pack/Sling Bag

Mission workshop axis waistpack.

Axis Waistpack

The Axis modular fanny pack from Mission Workshop punches above its weight. It’s both a fanny pack and an exterior bag attachment for the brand’s Arkiv systems of bags. Using an adjustable and hideable nylon woven waist strap, the Axis can be used independently or as an additional accessory. A Polyant X-Pac fabric lines the interior.

The bag features storage organization and a key leash for keeping everything in its place. I used the Axis to carry two cameras, my keys, small headphones, a wallet, and a few SD cards. It surprised me with its comfort, whether worn on my hip or across my body.

Fanny Pack/Sling Bag Runner-Up

Chrome industries kadet sling.

Kadet Sling

The Kadet series of bags distills the knowledge Chrome gained over the years developing bags for couriers into three distinct sizes—and several durable fabrics—to suit a wide range of riders’ needs. Starting with Chrome’s signature seatbelt buckle closure (also customizable), it is accompanied by an under-the-arm to chest plastic buckle that helps stabilize what you're carrying. The bag uses two standard weatherproof zippers to access your gear.

chrome kadet line up

The five-liter Mini is perfect for carrying a lock and essentials (phone, wallet, sunglasses, and maybe a camera). The standard Kadet is 9L and can handle an iPad, one or two cameras, a beanie, and all your other essential EDC (everyday carry) pieces. The 15L Kadet Max can fit your EDCs, a small laptop, a water bottle, and a light jacket.

Best Mussette

Outershell magic musette.

Magic Musette

Packable, pocket-able, and made of gridded proprietary Dynema and post-consumer recycled nylon yarn, this bag is strong, light, and extremely abrasion-resistant (thanks to the yarn Outershell uses). When packed away, the bag can be attached via a looped nylon strap, thrown to the back of your jersey, or hung on the back of your saddle. When taken out and fully expanded, the cross-body musette allows room for ample gas station-sourced snacks and drinks (I easily fit a full bundle of bananas in this bag). What makes this mussette worth recognition aside from the material resilience and functional user experience is the second attachment point securing the bag on your back from swinging around.

Outershell Everyday Tote

Everyday Tote

With its choice of materials and finishing details, Outershell thoughtfully designed and executed this Bag. The Everyday Tote fits perfectly in most 15-inch wide baskets or milk crates. Internally, the tote has a weather-resistant internal liner with four pockets (one is zippered). The exterior has two quick-access pockets and one zipper on the opposite side, finished with a weatherproof coating. The Everyday Tote is perfect for everyday use, to and from work, or out on a quick grocery run, and holds up well to normal wear and tear. The 10L option could be slightly larger (maybe by 1 or 2 liters), but I’m nitpicking.

Tote Runner-Up

Rei packaway tote.

Packaway Tote

This perfect catch-all tote from REI was handy for just about anything—shoes, camping equipment, helmets, knee pads, snacks, and more. The pack-away tote features an open drawstring main compartment design that closes up to prevent all your belongings from spilling out. Doubling as a protective shield from the elements, this bag has a weather-resistant coating. However, it can eventually wet out and become saturated (along with your cargo). With two more exterior pockets and tons of molly loops storing your phone or attaching a carabiner with extras is no problem.

Best Duffle

Orucase janus duffel.

Janus Duffel

The Janus duffle bag from Orucase is much more than “another cycling bag” thanks to the material choice and carrying capacity options. It is an extremely versatile bag with four exterior grab handle options, a shoulder strap (that can be used in a two- or one-strap configuration), and two volume choices (40L or 55L),

I loved this bag for going to the gym, the bike park, and weekend trips. And the Janus keeps my equipment, clothes, and extras stored neatly inside. The bag comes with two additional stuff sacks for the interior main compartment (I primarily used them as shoe bags but they can store socks or toiletries). At the bag’s top and bottom are two additional ventilated compartments big enough for a helmet or wet riding kit to dry out. I like this bag so much that I want a larger version—like 80 liters big.

Best Volume for Price

Rei co-op big haul 60 recycled duffel.

Co-op Big Haul 60 Recycled Duffel

With several size options and a carrying case for off-the-bike storage, this bag is your go-to for full-week trips or even month-long escapes. Using mixed materials, the bag is primarily constructed from recycled 400 D ripstop nylon with a 1680 recycled ballistic nylon bottom (nice to see some sustainability practices in use). The stowable carrying features (including backpack straps and duffel handles) mean your bag won't get caught on the conveyor belt when checked for a flight. The exterior features a daisy chain on either side of the bag to attach any last-minute extras and is finished with an oversized zipper hidden from the elements. The biggest drawback is the duffle’s lack of shoulder straps—otherwise, everyone should own a bag like this for big trips.

Perhaps the most asked question about bags from Bicycling members and riding friends is, “How big of a bag should I buy?” The answer to this depends on several factors.

Figuring out the volume of equipment you have is crucial to understanding what bags will accommodate your gear. First, assess the equipment needed for the rides you do the most (or rides you plan to take). You need to determine if it is as simple as flat-fix supplies and snacks, a laptop and clothes for work, or a sleeping pad, bag, headlamp, cooking equipment, and tools for a multi-day trek.

a group of backpacks

Then, determine how or where you want to carry your stuff—on your body (like a backpack or fanny pack) or on the bike. There are many bags and manufacturers, each with different approaches and design philosophies for on and off-the-bike bag use. Sifting through what will work for you might be confusing.

Sometimes it’s tough to figure out what you need for day-to-day use. My best advice for determining the best size is to find a store with the bag to check it out in person. You don’t want to research and buy a bag only to get it and find out it won't accommodate your size laptop, sleeping bag, or the hydration bladder you specifically purchased for that bag. Working with a shop knowledgeable in bags is extremely helpful.

The naming of materials can be confusing. Plus, it is sometimes clouded by marketing terms and jargon from brands.

The basic material is a standard weave (a plain weave or twill in some scenarios) backed with either a laminating layer or a material with a durable weather-repellant finish to help with moisture management. Some of the best materials use synthetic yarns. Good bags have much higher resilience to abrasion as they are made with strong 6/6 nylon. Unlike most twisted yarns, this material is extruded in a monofilament rather than a set of individual fibers plied and twisted together to add strength and resilience.

There are a ton of different fabrics out there that bag makers claim have excellent water resistance, premium abrasion resistance, and other seemingly magical properties. However, many manufacturers purchase the same white-label branded fabric (like Cordura or X-Pac). Few companies invest in milling technologies to create proprietary fabric required for the real-world conditions in which their products are used. With that said the fabric makers often build a synthetic heavy denier yarn, that is woven and laminated, into the product. This is different than a Gore-Tex membrane, but based on the same principle: To create a barrier that prevents moisture from saturating the material, contents, or user.

Construction

When bag makers or brands construct a product, their designers balance form versus function while implementing new and existing technologies. Sometimes this is done to improve performance but often it helps mitigate costs. Construction is also the designer's way to flex some of their creative skills. Whether it's a traditional method of sewing panels together or using origami-style folding methods, there are many ways to construct shapes. Designers often use a mix of materials (internal and external fabrics) which add layers. Sometimes they use glues and added seams.

As a bag designer, my biggest tip is to turn the bag inside to inspect its construction. Check if the bags have liners, finished and taped edges, or other details that improve protection, durability, and overall function.

How a bag is finished can make or break how it is used. Checking how the bag attaches with Velcro, hook-and-loop, or plastic closures is important. Knowing if the seams are taped, exposed, or bound with finishing bias helps determine the bag’s longevity and resilience to the weather and use. Also, check if the bag is treated with a finishing agent such as a durable water repellant (DWR) or an antimicrobial finish. Certain finishes (chemical and physical) add extra function to some performance features, ease of access, colorfastness, or even resistance to specific liquids.

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

Whether you’re interested in commuting with panniers or packing ultralight gear in a frame bag setup, bike bags are a convenient way to avoid cycling with a backpack. There are a lot of different bike bag systems, and the one you choose depends on your comfort and style of riding.

Panniers are larger-capacity bags that sit on a rack above your rear wheel (or occasionally front wheel) and are ideal for commuting and front-country touring. These are easy to pack and access. More streamlined packing systems include frame bags, seat packs, and handlebar packs. These are ideal for weight-conscious bikepackers looking for a more aerodynamic setup. Whether you’re planning a long-distance trip or looking to enhance your daily cycling, we’ve gathered the best bike bags for every adventurer.

Best Overall

Ortlieb back-roller classic pannier.

This set works just as well for running errands and commuting as it does for touring.

We’d love a few more internal pockets for organizing gear.

Ortlieb’s durable, high-volume, convenient pannier setup has excellent capacity and versatility. These panniers work great for everything from farmer’s market runs to multi-day front-country tours. These bags come in a set of two and are built from a rugged coated polyester that is fully waterproof thanks to the roll-top closure.

At 20 liters each, these are big enough to fit camping gear, food, clothes, or your local grocery haul. The panniers fit on racks up to 16 millimeters in diameter, and also have adapters for narrower rails. They have an interior pocket for keeping smaller items organized, don’t flap around on the bike rack, and come with shoulder straps for when you may want to wear them around town.

The Details: 20 liters each | 4.19 pounds | PVC-coated polyester | Waterproof

Best Durability

Thule shield bike pannier bag.

The bag sports a simple design and worry-free waterproofing.

The materials start out fairly stiff and can be tricky to roll at first.

Known for their ultra-durable luggage, gear racks, and storage, Thule also makes a similarly rugged line of waterproof bags with super secure attachments. These panniers come in a range of sizes, including a set of 13-liter bags, and single bags in 17-liter, 22-liter, and 25-liter capacities. They are hassle-free to attach securely to racks, and will fit anything from eight- to 16-millimeter rack bars without the need for adapters.

This set features a padded laptop sleeve that fits laptops up to 15 inches, as well as a smaller padded sleeve for tablets and file folders. The external zippered pocket holds small items for easy access, and the hardware and straps are all extremely durable and reliable.

The Details: 13-25 liters | 3.3-4.4 pounds | Welded nylon | Waterproof

Best for Commuting

Ortlieb vario ps pannier.

It’s a two-in-one backpack and bike pannier.

The bag is not entirely waterproof, so be careful with laptops and other tech items.

Combining the convenience, storage, and carrying system for use with both a bike rack and as a backpack, Ortlieb’s Vario PS Pannier is a no-brainer for bike commuters. Hop off your bike, unclip the bag, throw it on your back, and you’re ready for the day. The backpack straps tuck away for safe riding, and we appreciate the reflective details for early morning or evening commutes. This pack has convenient external pockets and a padded internal laptop sleeve making commuting a breeze. It also comes in fun colors with a retro-looking clasp to secure the roll-top closure.

The Details: 26 liters | 3.44 pounds | PU-coated nylon | Water-resistant

Most Versatile

North street bags pioneer 9 handlebar pack.

It’s easy to unclip it from handlebars to use as a clutch or crossbody bag.

It may be too small for transporting gear.

With simple attachments that eliminate the need to remove the straps from your handlebars (if you know, you know), this bag is convenient, secure, and versatile. This small bag has just over 2.5 liters of capacity, with a clear internal zippered pocket for cash and cards. The front zippered pocket is perfect for keys, and the pouch itself can hold small necessities and doubles as a purse, waist-pack, cross-body bag, or clutch. It attaches securely to your handlebars with nylon straps, then the pouch attaches to the straps with a simple clasp for added security. You can choose between a few different materials for the body of the bag, and the color range is so wide it feels almost custom.

The Details: 2.65 liters | 0.36 pounds | EcoPak EPX or Cordura | Water-resistant

Best Handlebar Pack

Revelate designs sweetroll handlebar bag.

The dual-access points are convenient, and we love the extra capacity in the front flap.

If you have narrow drop-bars you may not be able to fill this to capacity.

This waterproof bag is shaped like a tube and sits close to your handlebars, but doesn’t impede steering. The bag can be accessed from both ends, which means if you pack strategically, you can reach everything you need with a quick unbuckle-and-unroll during breaks. The bag comes with dense foam spacers to customize the fit and clear any brake lines, and it stays tight against the handlebars even after days of bumpy riding.

This bag is ideal for hauling tent poles or other long, awkwardly shaped bikepacking gear, and the expandable front flap provides even more capacity for snacks or maps. The material is fully waterproof, and as long as you roll the sides as directed, will withstand even torrential downpours. Just be aware of your bike’s drop-bar situation as smaller bikes with narrower drop bars may need a smaller roll.

Best Frame Bag

Blackburn outpost elite frame bike bag.

It comes in multiple sizes and heights to fit as many bike geometries as possible.

The gear loop and zipper attachment areas can delaminate after significant use.

There are so many bike geometries and measurements that the only way to ensure a perfect frame bag fit is to get a custom bag. However, the next best thing is a frame bag that comes in multiple capacities and sizes. Blackburn’s Outpost Elite Frame Bag doesn’t just have different sizes, it comes in different heights to fill as much space as possible on your frame, keeping packed weight at a lower center of gravity without increasing wind resistance. This bag is made with waterproof materials and sealed zippers, and has multiple pockets for organizing quick-grab items. It even has a hose port for carrying a water reservoir in the bag itself, perfect for those extra-dry stretches.

The Details: 3.4-6.8 liters | 0.44-0.69 pounds | Nylon | Waterproof

Best Half-frame Bag

Deuter mondego fb 6 pack.

A half-frame bag leaves space in the frame for a water bottle mount,

It only comes in one size, so may feel large on smaller bikes.

A half-frame bag is a versatile option that still allows you to carry an accessible water bottle on your downtube without losing the convenience of gear stashed in the frame. This bag still has six liters of capacity, which is enough for snacks, a tool kit, and a spare layer. It also has a small side pocket and comes with the standard hook-and-loop closures to fit a variety of tube diameters, and is highly water-resistant.

The Details: 6 liters | 0.38 pounds | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best Seat Pack

Revelate designs spinelock 16l seat bag.

The bag can be removed from the bike with just one pin.

Shorter riders may have trouble with this bag hitting their rear wheel when filled to capacity.

The seat pack is the workhorse of a touring bike-bag system. With a 16-liter capacity and an easy-to-pack shape, this bag can hold compressible sleeping bags, solo tents, and spare clothes — basically your entire camping setup. The Spinelock system uses a set of clamps that attach under your seat, with a forged aluminum pin that connects through the top of the pack attachment. One hook-and-loop strap secures it to your seat post, and you’re ready to go. If you’re filling this bag to capacity you will need to stuff it on the ground like a compression sack, and then use the convenient air purge valve to reduce the volume for easy transport.

The Details: 16 liters | 1.5 pounds | Ripstop nylon, aluminum | Waterproof

Best Top Tube Bag

Rei co-op junction top tube bag.

It has a surprisingly large capacity and doesn’t move around as you ride.

The bag is not fully waterproof.

The humble top-tube bag is an unsung hero in commuting, bikepacking, and general riding. It’s also kind of hard to get right, but this 1.3-liter model from REI’s bike bag line nails it. Two hook-and-loop closures secure around your top tube, and a bungee can be tightened as much as possible around your stem to keep it stable. It has an internal pocket for small items like lip balm, cash, or cards, and the main pocket is deceptively large, holding important bike tools, snacks, and other essentials.

The Details: 1.3 liters | 0.37 pounds | Nylon | Water-resistant

Tips for Buying Bike Bags

Consider capacity and access.

If you’re running a pannier setup, keep your quick-grab items at the top, and consider supplementing larger bags with a smaller front bag. Commuters and casual cyclists probably don’t need more than 15-20 liters of capacity for in-town riding, but bikepackers can need upward of 30-40 liters, depending on itineraries and destinations. Accessibility is also key, and we love keeping a few small bags attached to the handlebars or top tube for items we may need quickly or frequently.

Prioritize weight distribution

Biking with bags or panniers will change the dynamics and feel of your bike. Keeping your weight lower keeps your center of gravity in a more natural position, so pack your frame bag with care. If you’re riding with two panniers, weigh them equally as much as possible for easier riding. If you’re riding with just one pannier, be aware of the change in balance during riding, and start with smaller loads to practice staying upright. Biking with a frame bag and a handlebar bag eliminates a lot of the weight distribution issues, and remember that keeping your weight lower keeps your center of gravity in a more natural position, so pack your frame bag first.

Think about waterproofing

Most bike bags and panniers are durable and water-resistant, and some are entirely waterproof. This distinction comes from material, material treatment, zipper construction, and closure. When used correctly, a roll-top closure on a bag built with waterproof materials is going to keep your gear the driest.

DWR-treated materials will keep your gear dry for a while, but can eventually saturate, and bags with zippers have a higher rate of moisture seepage, as even a waterproof zipper creates a potential failure point due to delamination after significant use. If you’re transporting a laptop or other items that can’t get wet, buying an IPX-rated waterproof bag is your best bet.

For commuting, running errands, and front-country touring, panniers are convenient, easy to pack, and have a larger capacity. Many also come with carrying straps and can double as backpacks or shoulder bags. For lightweight bikepacking setups or extended gravel racing, bike bags will be more aerodynamic and afford easier riding.  “I look for convenience over weight savings,” Montana-based cyclist and gravel bike racer Hailey Hosken says. “I choose panniers because I can load all of my gear into two backpack-shaped bags and find it all easily.”

A fully weighted set of pannier will slow you down due to added weight as well as wind resistance. Your bike goes from being a narrow, sleek vehicle to having added width to catch the wind. Riding with weighted panniers takes some getting used to, and can make you feel less agile, but theyare still a great way to carry camping gear and town gear. Just be aware that your bike will feel different at first.

If you’re looking for maximum protection for your gear, choose a hard-sided bike bag, but keep in mind that they are clunkier and can be harder to pack than soft-sided bags. A good option for protecting your items is a soft-sided bag with internal structural reinforcements, so you get the flexibility of a soft bag with extra internal protection. If you’re packing a laptop, look for a pannier with a padded sleeve.

NBC Select Travel Awards 2024: The best duffels, backpacks and weekenders

Bags from Calpak, Patagonia, Dagne Dover, Orvis and July earned NBC Select Travel Awards for their organizational features, durability and ease of use.

At NBC Select, we spend hours researching and testing products so you can be more selective with your purchases. For our first-ever NBC Select Travel Awards, we spent months thoroughly testing numerous products covering a variety of travel categories.

We flew across the globe to Japan and Paris with suitcases , took train rides around New York City with weekenders and duffels in tow and packed bags full of packing cubes , toiletry bags and noise-canceling headphones to road trip across the East Coast. After all that testing, our editors sat down to choose products deserving of NBC Select’s stamp of approval.

Below are our award-winning duffels, weekenders and backpacks , plus information about how we evaluated each product.

SKIP AHEAD How we picked the best bags | Best duffel bags | Best backpacks | Best weekender bags

select We tested over 50 travel accessories for our first ever Travel Awards — these are our favorites

How we picked the best travel bags .

The backpack, the weekender and the duffel are all bags that need to serve multiple functions while on a trip. We fill them with whatever we can’t fit in our suitcases, throw our essentials inside them for overnight getaways and use them to carry our laptops and water bottles on planes, trains, and automobiles. They are versatile and multipurpose, making it useful to keep at least one at home when traveling. Here’s how we evaluated travel bags to find NBC Select’s 2024 Travel Award winners.

  • Zippers, handles and straps : To ensure zippers glide smoothly and don’t get stuck at any point, we opened and closed each bag numerous times when it was empty and full. We also considered how strong the bags’ handles and straps were, including how they felt when we held or wore them on our bodies.
  • Structure and organization : We assessed how each bag’s structure impacted our ability to pack it easily — for example, whether it stayed open while we added clothing or flopped over and whether it was too stiff to overstuff or just flexible enough. We counted how many outfits (and, if applicable, how many pairs of shoes) fit inside the bags, plus what type of organizational features they offer, including built-in dividers, pockets, and pouches.
  • Comfortability : After filling our bags to the brim, we ensured they felt comfortable carrying for long and short periods. We carried them as the brand intended: on our backs or over our shoulders.
  • Durability : We noted the material each bag is made from and how well it withstands being tossed around during travel. We also considered water resistance.

The best duffel bags

Best overall: calpak luka duffel.

Calpak Luka Duffel

Calpak Luka Duffel

With its spacious main compartment, exterior and interior pockets, exterior shoe compartment and trolley sleeve, this bag makes for the perfect travel and daily duffel. “I love that I can use this bag for trips as well as in my everyday life as a gym bag. I didn’t find that with the other duffels I tested, so I appreciated this,” says Zoe Malin , NBC Select associate updates editor. “The size of this bag and how lightweight it is makes it a perfect workout bag for me. I put my sneakers, a change of clothes, weights, a towel, toiletries and a water bottle inside it to go to yoga after work.”

The soft and puffy polyester bag is also durable, easy to clean and water-resistant. “I had to walk to the train in the rain with this bag and everything inside was totally dry,” says Malin. “I just wiped water off the bag in the bathroom of the train station with paper towels.”

Best large capacity: Patagonia Black Hole Duffel

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel

Patagonia’s Black Hole Duffel comes in four sizes — 40L, 55L, 70L and 100L — so you can choose the capacity that’s best for your travels. The duffel is made from 100% recycled fabrics, plus it has a durable and weather-resistant exterior.

On the inside, this spacious bag has interior pockets that are similar to a carry-on suitcase. It also closes and opens easily since the zippers glide easily, says Mili Godio , NBC Select updates editor. “The only thing I wish is that it had more pockets, especially for smaller items like my wallet and keys, but the ones it does have are super spacious.”

The best backpacks

Best overall: calpak laptop backpack.

Calpak Laptop Backpack

Calpak Laptop Backpack

This Calpak backpack is great for frequent travelers looking for a large, durable bag to hold essentials of all sizes, as well as a laptop. The backpack has exterior and interior pockets, a water bottle holder and a trolley sleeve so you can slide it onto your luggage. “Calpak’s backpack has completely changed how I travel,” says Bianca Alvarez , an NBC Select associate reporter who’s a super commuter . She travels from Virginia to New York City every week for work. “I tossed my old backpacks after using this one because it makes my travel days easier,” she says.

Alvarez says storage and space are a guarantee with this bag due to its plethora of organizational features. She especially loves its interior pockets. They’re located near the top of the bag rather than the bottom, which prevents her from having to rummage through everything packed inside to find what she’s looking for.  Alvarez says the bag’s main compartment can easily fit clothes, shoes and cosmetics bags, and there’s a separate compartment for her laptop and notebooks.

Best for commuting: Dagne Dover Dakota Backpack

Dagne Dover Dakota Backpack

Dagne Dover Dakota Backpack

Dagne Dover’s Dakota Backpack is ideal for commuters, like NBC Select staff who brought it back and forth to the office. “I’ve been using this backpack for two months as my work bag and it’s been a major upgrade from my last situation,” says Rebecca Rodriguez , NBC Select editorial projects manager. The backpack has padded straps, making it comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and it has compartments and pockets to store whatever you’re traveling with.

Whether you’re commuting in the rain or accidentally spilled your morning coffee , no worries — this backpack will keep your items protected. “The backpack got dirty a couple of times while I used it, but the neoprene material was super easy to clean with soap and warm water,” says Rodriguez.

Best outdoors: Orvis Trekkage LT Adventure

Orvis Trekkage LT Adventure

Orvis Trekkage LT Adventure

While the Orvis Trekkage backpack is specifically designed for outdoor adventures like hiking and camping, it has features that allow you to use it in everyday life, including a laptop pocket and a hidden security pocket for valuables. The bag is made from heavy-duty recycled, water-repellent fabric, and its main pocket is lockable making it easier to protect your items while outdoors camping or just traveling. There are also expandable side pockets and a built-in hydration reservoir.

“This bag is big without looking like it belongs on the 'Amazing Race,'” says Rosalie Sparaco, NBC senior social media editor. “It has a ton of space, although it could potentially use more internal pockets since it was easy to lose stuff.” She also says the backpack is comfortable to carry thanks to its padded back panel and curved ergonomic shoulder straps. If you need extra support, you can use the bag’s adjustable sternum strap and adjustable, removable waist strap. The backpack also fits under the seat of a plane.

The best weekenders

Best overall: dagne dover landon carryall.

Dagne Dover Landon Carryall

Dagne Dover Landon Carryall

The magic behind Dagne Dover’s Landon Carryall lies in its structure, says Malin: “It has shape, so it stays open while I’m packing and never flops over, yet it’s flexible and soft, so I can overstuff it without any issues.”  The bag is also expandable. “You can unsnap the sides of the bag to make it bigger, which is such a great option,” says Malin. “I expand it for longer trips, but leave it snapped for overnight trips when I don’t need a ton of space.”

The organizational features this bag offers vary by size. It’s available in extra small, small, medium, large and extra large options — the bigger the bag, the more extensive its organization features are. Because of this, we recommend the medium, large and extra large options for traveling (the extra small and small Carryalls function more as everyday handbags, based on our testers’ experiences). They’re designed with a laptop carrier, an exterior phone pocket, interior side pockets, a key leash and an attached zip-top pouch. The larger bags also come with a shoe bag and a detachable adjustable crossbody strap.

Best for a long weekend: July Carry All Weekender Plus

July Carry All Weekender Plus

July Carry All Weekender Plus

If you need a weekender bag that fits enough clothes and toiletries to last you a few days, this one from July is exactly what you’re looking for. “I’m very impressed by how incredibly spacious this bag is,” says Ari Night, NBC Select editorial assistant. “Not only does it fit multiple outfits, but it also has segmented pockets that keep everything organized inside.” The bag’s clamshell opening allows it to lie flat making it  easier for packing, and there’s a padded pocket in the center to put delicate items like a laptop or tablet . This weekender also has a hidden internal pocket with a magnetic opening for valuables like jewelry, an exterior zip pocket and a luggage sleeve. It also  comes with a detachable adjustable shoulder strap.

These Two-In-One Convertible Bags Are a Travel Necessity

When it comes to picking the perfect travel bag , versatility is key. With that in mind, it’s well worth investing in one—or more—of the best convertible bags. As you can likely tell by the name, these innovative accessories can be worn at least two ways—and in some cases, three or four. Some examples of great options for travelers include a tote that transforms into a backpack to help more evenly distribute weight (and avoid an achy shoulder in the event of overpacking), a purse that turns into a clutch to take you from day to night, and a shoulder bag that can also be worn crossbody . When you've only got a carry-on suitcase to work with, having bags that serve multiple functions can help trim down your packing list.

When selecting this edit of the best multi-purpose bags, I looked for ones designed with durability and functionality in mind, be it in the form of several pockets, a waterproof exterior, sturdy straps, and so on. Keep reading to discover 16 excellent convertible backpacks, purses, and weekenders from Traveler -approved brands like July, MZ Wallace, and Béis, broken down by category.

The best for travel days

The best for parents, the best for day to night, the best for commuting.

This endlessly versatile bag from Tumi can be carried as a backpack (the padded adjustable straps provide plenty of support) or a tote bag, making it especially convenient for sightseeing. It also has a removable leather top handle, two front zip pockets, and a dedicated pocket for your smartphone.

I took the older version of this belt bag-slash-fanny pack everywhere on my two-week Hawaii honeymoon. The updated version, available in 15 colors and patterns, is just as impressive with its water-repellent construction, extendable strap, and an exterior zippered compartment with interior pockets for small but necessary items like keys, credit cards, and lip balm. Wear it around your waist, across your chest, or on your shoulder.

This convertible bag—which features a fully removable bottom compartment that doubles as a packing cube —works exceptionally well as a weekender and an everyday bag. The removable padded laptop sleeve is just the icing on the cake.

Few travel bags are as innovative as this tiny-but-mighty crossbody option. When emptied and not in use, it can be easily stored away or conveniently carried in hand (or via wrist) using the attached strap.

Ideal for on-the-go families, this diaper bag easily converts from a backpack to a shoulder bag. It has plenty of pockets to help you stay organized and an insulated pouch for snacks or bottles.

This workhorse of a bag—which can be worn as a traditional backpack or shoulder bag thanks to its long strap—is equipped with dedicated spots for all your (and your kids’) essentials, including diapers, wipes, bottles, toys, and more. Its waterproof nylon construction is a bonus.

This chic quilted backpack is unique in that it doubles (er, triples) as a crossbody or shoulder bag. The 18 pockets(!) ensure you stay organized while on the go, while the built-in luggage sleeve allows for hands-free carrying—a must when trekking through an airport with little ones in tow.

As you can guess by its name, Calpak's convertible stroller caddy crossbody seamlessly converts from a crossbody bag to a stroller caddy (and vice-versa). Don’t be fooled by its small size: The bag features two insulated bottle pockets plus expandable sides for extra storage.

Designed to be carried everywhere, this miniature hardshell case from Traveler -approved suitcase brand July stands out for its detachable strap (which converts it into a clutch) and durability.

Made from 100 percent Italian leather, this timeless accessory can be worn as a shoulder bag or crossbody simply by adjusting the strap length. Its internal double compartments, center zippered divider, and back slip pocket are equally impressive.

This sleek leather bag is named for how the buckled tabs embrace its size—adorable, I know—and it’s just as functional as it is cute. The adjustable shoulder strap can be removed, allowing you to carry it as a clutch for a formal event.

Behold, your new summer wardrobe staple : the Staud Bean Convertible Leather clutch. Thanks to its clever convertible and removable strap, the purse can be worn as a clutch, shoulder bag, or wristlet.

The aptly named Transform Tote from Pond Los Angeles is a favorite of associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who describes it as “the most functional tote I've ever used” thanks to its roomy interior, sleek design, and water-resistant construction. Plus, it can be worn not two, not three, but four ways: as a shoulder bag, a crossbody bag (thanks to its longer adjustable strap), a backpack, or on top of your carry-on courtesy of the built-in trolley sleeve.

This office-appropriate backpack will garner some compliments thanks to its structured silhouette and textured leather construction. The padded laptop compartment and multiple storage pockets add an extra-functional touch. Simply pull and extend the back strap to wear it as a crossbody or over the shoulder.

Whether worn as a backpack or carried as a briefcase, this convertible Timbuk2 bag was designed with savvy professionals—looking at you, business travelers —in mind. The luggage sleeve, which allows for hands-free carrying, is a bonus.

During the workweek, carry this Mark & Graham bag as a traditional work tote and stash your tablet inside the matching laptop sleeve. Come the weekend, switch things up by wearing it as a shoulder bag (there are built-in double shoulder straps) or a crossbody bag (I love the style of the attachable twill crossbody strap). Best of all, it can be monogrammed with your initials.
