Pearl Jam sets 2023 U.S. tour, touts ‘fairly priced tickets’ amid Ticketmaster drama

Pearl Jam is hitting the road this year, and the band hopes fans can come along without breaking the bank.

On Thursday, the rock group announced its 2023 U.S. tour, commencing at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 31. Pearl Jam said it is taking action to “continue to protect fans’ access to fairly priced tickets.”

The Grammy-winning group — comprised of Jeff Ament, Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder — opted to “make tickets non-transferable where permitted” and will sell “approximately 10% of tickets through PJ Premium at the market rate to offset increased costs.”

How Ticketmaster became the most hated name in music

Fans, politicians and even artists were complaining about Ticketmaster long before Taylor Swift filled stadiums. But experts say the anger may be misplaced.

Jan. 23, 2023

The announcement continued: “Tickets on this tour will continue to be non-transferable in all states except Illinois where it is prohibited by law. We apologize in advance to Illinois fans who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.”

Nontransferable tickets make it less likely that buyers can flip their tickets for a profit by selling to third-party sites and scalpers.

Fans can register for Ticketmaster ‘s Verified Fan program before tickets go on sale on April 28 at 10 a.m. local time. Current Pearl Jam Ten Club members have access to the ticket presale.

Additionally, the band said it will implement “all-in pricing across this tour” in its ticket sales. This means that prices listed on Ticketmaster will include all processing fees “so there are no surprises at check out.”

In a statement shared with The Times Friday, Ticketmaster said it supports Pearl Jam’s efforts to be more transparent about ticket prices.

“Pearl Jam has always advocated on behalf of their fans and we hope more artists, teams and venues follow their lead and start using the all-in pricing display available on Ticketmaster,” Ticketmaster said. “It would be better for fans if all-in pricing was mandated nationally, but in the meantime we created the all-in display option to help fans see the full costs upfront.”

Pearl Jam’s latest efforts to be transparent with its ticket sales and limit reselling come months after music fans took Ticketmaster to court.

In December 2022, Taylor Swift fans filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation Entertainment Inc., for alleged fraud, price-fixing and antitrust law violations while selling advance tickets to Swift’s Eras Tour.

An investigation by the Department of Justice and a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing rife with Swift lyrics followed a month later.

Pearl Jam has had its own issues with Ticketmaster. The quintet clashed with the platform several times over ticket fees in the 1990s.

As part of its U.S. tour, Pearl Jam will make stops in Chicago, Indianapolis and Fort Worth and Austin, Texas. Rock band Inhaler will join Pearl Jam for its shows in Chicago, Indianapolis and Austin.

“We can’t wait to see you out there,” the band wrote.

Pearl Jam Announces 2023 US Tour Dates

Pearl Jam has announced nine U.S. tour dates that will take place in August and September.

The band will begin with two shows in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, followed by performances in Chicago, Indianapolis and Fort Worth, and a final pair of shows in Austin on Sept. 18 and 19. Inhaler will open the Chicago, Indianapolis and Austin shows;  support for the other dates is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

You can see a list of the new tour dates below.

Pearl Jam, who have a long history with Ticketmaster stretching back to 1994, is reportedly seeking "to protect fans’ access to fairly priced tickets" in a few ways, according to a press release. Tickets will first be available on Thursday exclusively to members of Pearl Jam’s fan club, Ten Club . This will be followed by general public tickets sold via Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program, which fans can register for through April 25. The Verified Fan sale will launch on April 28.

Tickets for the tour will be non-transferable in all states except Illinois where such restrictions are prohibited by law. Additionally, each of the concerts will sell "PJ Premium" tickets, which account for roughly 10%; they are priced at market rate and help to offset the cost of touring while keeping ticket prices lower across the board. The band will also use "all-in pricing" for the first time, meaning the full, out-of-pocket cost for tickets will be listed with fees upfront.

Pearl Jam Announces 2023 Tour Dates, Adopts ‘All-In’ Ticket Pricing

Pearl Jam has announced a short tour for late summer and early fall of 2023, playing nine arena shows in five cities in August and September. Perhaps not surprisingly with a group long known for its careful attention to ticket practices, the explanation of how the band will be handling the ticket sales runs much longer than the actual list of tour dates. (See the full list of shows below.)

For the first time, the band has adopted “all-in” ticket pricing, meaning the added fees that are attached to tickets almost across the board appear as part of the basic ticket price, rather than showing up as a surprise during checkout. Pearl Jam is doing the tour with Live Nation, which has advocated for the all-in model — although many major artists have reportedly been reluctant to adopt it, for fear of having ticket prices look higher at first glance when everything is included.

Ticketmaster praised Pearl Jam for using the all-in pricing model, saying in a statement to Variety : “Pearl Jam has always advocated on behalf of their fans and we hope more artists, teams and venues follow their lead and start using the all-in pricing display available on Ticketmaster. It would be better for fans if all-in pricing was mandated nationally, but in the meantime we created the all-in display option to help fans see the full costs upfront.”

The announcement about the tour dates had Pearl Jam staking its position on other controversial ticketing practices, as well. The use of “platinum” — i.e., dynamically priced — tickets came to the forefront after some of Bruce Springsteen’s 2023 tickets reached astronomical face-value heights, and Taylor Swift rejected the use of platinum pricing on her own tour. Pearl Jam is using the platinum system — here called “PJ Premium” seats — but the announcement emphasizes that only 10% of tickets will be part of that program, and that these tickets help subsidize lower prices for the other 90%.

To avoid scalping, tickets will also be non-transferable, as well, except in Illinois. The band said that the majority of tickets will end up in the hands of members of its Ten Club fan club via a presale.

The tour begins Aug. 31 in St. Paul and ends Sept. 19 in Austin, with stops between in Chicago, Indianapolis and Fort Worth.

The pre-sale begins today for members of the Ten Club. A subsequent sale to those who sign up for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program will begin April 28. Advanced registration for Verified Fan begins today.

“Pearl Jam continues to try to protect fans’ access to fairly priced tickets by providing the majority of tickets to Ten Club members, making tickets non-transferable where permitted, and by selling PJ Premium tickets,” read the statement. “PJ Premium seats are located in a variety of preferred locations and account for approximately 10% of ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset increased touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available through Verified Fan along with regularly priced tickets.”

The announcement added: “Tickets on this tour will continue to be non-transferable in all states except Illinois where it is prohibited by law. We apologize in advance to Illinois fans who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.” And: “Pearl Jam will use all-in pricing across this tour for the first time. This means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of fees so there are no surprises at checkout.”

“Pearl Jam has always advocated on behalf of their fans

Pearl Jam has announced a slew of new 2023 US tour dates, which will kick off in Minneapolis in August.

The iconic grunge band will perform nine shows in August and September, making stops in St. Paul, Chicago, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, and Austin. It will be joined by special guests Inhaler as support for the dates in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Austin, with the opening act for the other shows to be announced in the coming weeks.

With the new tour dates, Pearl Jam will try to protect fans by giving access to fairly priced tickets, the majority of which will be provided to members of its Ten Club fan club. Tickets will be non-transferable in all states except Illinois, where it is prohibited by law. In a press release, the band apologized to fans in the state “who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.”

PJ Premium tickets will also be sold, with those seats located in a variety of preferred locations and will account for approximately 10 percent of the ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available through a Verified Fan sale, along with regularly priced tickets.

The 2023 US tour marks the first time Pearl Jam will use all-in pricing, which means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of fees.

A special pre-sale for members of the Ten Club who held membership on April 19, 2023, will begin today. General public tickets will then be sold through Ticketmaster Verified Fan, which requires advance registration. The registration window is open now through 5pm PT on April 25 –  you can register here . The Verified Fan sale will then begin on April 28 at 10am local time.

Last year, Pearl Jam committed to addressing its carbon footprint as a touring band with an initiative that saw the band pledging to pay $200 per ton of CO2 used on its Gigaton tour. Globally, the carbon offset market varies, but the average amount paid per ton of CO2 is between $1-15.

Pearl Jam, updates about the new album and the 2023 US tour

Pearl Jam 2022 Euro Tour ended just a few days ago and we already have some juicy news about a possible forthcoming new album.

pearl jam tour 2023 rumors

A few days ago, one of our readers, Serena Zanolli, met Mike McCready in Prague. During the quick chat they had, Mike revealed that Pearl Jam have a lot of songs that are almost ready and that he’s very satisfied about them. He also added that it won’t be long before a new album is ready, even if there’s still a lot of work to do.

The forthcoming, still untitled new album, will be produced by Andrew Watt who also produced Eddie Vedder’s latest solo record Earthling at the beginning of the year. Andrew Watt produced also many other artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Post Malone and The Kid LAROI.

Stone Gossard confirmed in an interview for vwmusicrocks.com what McCready already said. He also added that the band will keep on working on new songs for the next year, before touring the USA.

As of now, Pearl Jam have a US tour scheduled for September and Eddie Vedder will perform at The Ohana Festival in October. There have been many rumors about a possible South America, New Zealand and Australia tour at the beginning of 2023 but there are no official confirmations yet.

Review: Pearl Jam finally conquers Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena. Give them the keys

Michael Rietmulder

Concert review

A controlled squall of primordial guitar feedback announced their arrival. As the large curtain covering a massive projection screen drew, the members of Pearl Jam filed on stage, their silhouettes cast onto a crescent of light — like the moon rising above a dark horizon — on the massive backdrop.

For all the excitement that comes with a — what, twice-a-decade? — Seattle Pearl Jam show, a sense of temporary calm washed over the virtually sold-out Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday during the opening verse of “Release” — a fan favorite off their debut album full of fan favorites. It wouldn’t last. As the song came into bloom, an Eddie Vedder-shaped shadow led what felt like a secular hymnal consecrating the proceedings.

“I’ll ride the wave,” he sang, pausing a half-beat longer like an archer drawing his bow. “Where it, takes meeeeeee.” That signature quivering voice shot to the back of the arena like a gold-tipped arrow exploding in a full-throated singalong. Normally, a band works its way up to the goosebump moments, but why waste time with pleasantries when we’re all neighbors here, right?

“Well, look at us, we’re home,” Vedder said wryly after that opening cleanse.

Yes, the boys are back in town this week, capping the first leg of their Dark Matter World Tour with a pair of Climate Pledge Arena shows, which continue Thursday. Ask any of the Seattleites or Seattleites-for-a-night who flock to the Emerald City and wherever else they play like the dearly departed Bill Walton on a Grateful Dead tour and they’ll tell you they squeeze those hometown shows a little tighter. Walton was one of two hoops legends the band paid homage to, including the Storm’s Sue Bird, whose jersey hangs from the arena’s rafters.

It’s been six years since the Seattle rock giants played a local sports complex and it’s always a special occasion when they do. But Tuesday’s two hour and 20-minute set also carried the distinction of being the first time the band played the newish Climate Pledge Arena, gigs that felt even longer in the making .

“It’s about time we play this damn place,” Vedder said after a soul-easing “Low Light” that greeted the enamored crowd like a smile from an old friend they hadn’t seen in a while.

Never mind the fact that Pearl Jam has probably played more arenas than the nascent hockey franchise that occupies the three-year-old facility. Even though it was their first turn at Climate Pledge Arena, the Seattle quintet already seemed to enjoy a home-court advantage, having rehearsed for their tour at the venue last month. Despite a few more eh-whatever feedback hisses than there should have been during the first half of the band’s set, Climate Pledge Arena has literally never sounded better than it did Tuesday.

The pristine mix was otherwise perfectly dialed in for the room, even during a dazzling opening performance from fellow Seattle rock faves and recent PJ tourmates Deep Sea Diver when fans were still filling the seats.

There were plenty of tender moments throughout the night, including an emotional “Man of the Hour” dedicated to Walton — the NBA legend who died Monday — and Vedder’s solo acoustic turn on “Just Breathe,” which went out to “long relationships” and the band members’ wives, who were all in attendance. But at times, Vedder and the guys seemed more interested in raining thunderbolts down upon the crowd like a rock ‘n’ roll Zeus perched atop the Space Needle, thanks in part to some of the new songs off this year’s gripping “Dark Matter” LP and the band’s own god of thunder, Matt Cameron, behind the drum kit.

During the runaway crescendo on “Scared of Fear,” Mike McCready’s guitar screamed and squiggled like the amber lines across the backdrop — part of the new-look visuals created by Tacoma-based artist Rob Sheridan for the tour. It was a tasteful, complementary addition for a band that’s long favored a more no-frills stage production. Functionally, it also allowed them to dispense with the more obtrusive video screens customary with arena shows, instead incorporating live footage of the band into the design in a more interesting and organic way.

Rolling into “React, Respond” — a nervy post-punk slapper that formed around a Jeff Ament riff — an energized McCready bounced around the stage like the teenager who “ popped his knee out ” playing Bumbershoot on the same Seattle Center campus 40 years ago.

It sounds simple to say, but it’s hard to not be overcome by the history and connection one of Seattle’s flagship bands has with its hometown whenever they play to a Seattle crowd dotted with Ten Club Mariners T-shirts and, this week, Kraken-colored Pearl Jam hockey jerseys newly purchased from the crowded merch tables. Even for the guys used to standing in front of packed arenas, it seems.

“This town is full of memories,” Vedder said after the healing newbie “Wreckage,” a call for unity amid political division sown by Donald Trump, the former president whom Vedder (unsurprisingly) took a swipe at moments later. “We wrote this song there, we recorded that one there, broke up a fight over there. And things have changed a little bit, sometimes maybe a lot, but this has been our home for, well, some of us more than 30 years, 33 years. … But it’s always been a point of pride to be part of the music community in this city and the artistic community, and I hope we’ve represented this town well to the rest of the world. It really has been like a dream that we’re still up here after all this time.”

Speaking of Seattle pedigree, the local history-makers gave a couple nods to Jimi Hendrix as the show wound down, first joined by Deep Sea Diver for a rousing, tambourine-smacking “All Along the Watchtower” that saw guitarist Stone Gossard rip a searing solo.

“Oh Mike, how do we say goodbye?” Vedder said, playfully spurring McCready to launch into the fan-favorite mashup of PJ classic “Yellow Ledbetter” and Hendrix’s “Little Wing.”

“Well, damn,” Vedder gasped before closing with another new song, “Setting Sun.” “You make us want this to be a more usual occurrence. We don’t want you to get bored with us, but we’d love to come back and do this again — I mean Thursday, but then again and again and again.”

Be our guest. I bet Macklemore would even let you drive his Zamboni .

Pearl Jam First 2023 Tour Dates Revealed?

pearl jam tour 2023 rumors

Pearl Jam are rumored to play at Lollapalooza in South America, according to Twitter rumors. Fans are also speculating about more 2023 stadium shows on the Ten Club board.

tino_11 said, “A question for those in the US, why do bands choose to play in baseball stadiums, rather than football stadiums? Baseball stadiums seem to have the worst set up imaginable for shows.”

Lerxst1992 responded, “Not only are baseball stadiums the absolute worst- putting a band into an expansive outfield a mile from the seats for most- PJ loves to play the oldest stadiums, full of beams and poles that obstruct views and ruin sound. All because the man in charge has a romantic feel for the old stadiums.

To do a real stadium tour takes double the equipment and double the crew to account for a four day set up. To do a fair stadium tour, bands usually do an impressive light show and huge screens, which is fair to the majority of fans sitting a mile away, giving them something to look at. I never understood the allure of stadiums for bands that can pack 20k into an arena. Rammstein drew about 40k to their east coast stadium shows, but they did that because their stadium show was designed for the international dates, and it looked impressive.”

Pearl Jam drops last-minute Seattle concert tickets for Dark Matter World Tour

SEATTLE - Great news for Pearl Jam fans. Some production hold tickets were just released for Tuesday's show at Climate Pledge Arena.

These last-minute tickets became available shortly after 1 p.m., and can be purchased at any Ticketmaster point of sale.

The release of these tickets comes as part of Pearl Jam's highly anticipated Dark Matter World Tour . The band, which announced the tour in February, will perform two shows at Climate Pledge Arena, on May 28 and 30. This marks Pearl Jam's first hometown performance in six years, generating significant excitement among fans.

Pearl Jam shared a new song and announced the release of their 12th studio album, "Dark Matter," in mid-February. The album, created in just three weeks at a Malibu studio, is described by the band as channeling the spirit of their lifelong camaraderie and renewed creative energy. The album is set to drop in stores and online April 19.

Band member and lead vocalist Eddie Vedder expressed his excitement during the announcement of the band's latest album, stating, "We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it, or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful … No hyperbole, I think this is our best work."
