My husband and I recently returned from a honeymoon in Greece and Italy that was planned entirely by Lesley at Paull Travel. Coming from a wedding, it was wonderful to have everything taken care of for when we arrived. The locations Lesley chose were central and made travel destinations easily walkable, and the tours she recommended were exactly what we hoped they would be. My husband and I recently (January 2019) circumnavigated the globe. We first went on a Luxury Gold Uniworld Tour of Egypt with my sister in law and then my husband and I hopped to Thailand. This was all arranged for us down to the smallest detail by Jalene. Her customer service, cheerful attitude and attention to detail are outstanding. We loved the Luxury Gold Uniworld Tour so much, that we are looking forward to our next one and my sister in law has already booked another to Japan at the end of 2019. If you book the tour to Egypt, I highly suggest requesting the amazing tour guide and Egyptologist we had. His name is Adel Refat El Dosoky. I knew by the second day, that he would be the reason why Egypt came alive for us. His story telling abilities, knowledge and passion for his subject, excellent English and utter kindness, guided us safely through this amazing experience. As for the ship (Tosca), utter luxury! Immaculate! The food was sooo good and so much more than I expected. Chef Hamdy is a world class chef and when he found out I was gluten intolerant, he and his staff went out of their way for me every day and it was delicious! The wait staff were not only great at their jobs, they took delight in learning our little quirks and anticipating our needs every day. Their smiles never dimmed for even a second and the same people who took care of us at breakfast, took care of us at supper. The entertainment was fun and interactive. I surprised myself by participating. In general, the people of Egypt were friendly, welcoming and kind. As a note, there were only 6 of us (out of 70) on the ship who had paid for the Luxury Gold level of service. Our group remained small. We had our own van (as opposed to the other 64 who were referred to as Bus A and Bus B, our own Faluca (Nile sailing boat), Tour Guide and Egyptologist Adel Refat El Dosoky, and we saw things they never did because our group was small. (My understanding is that at the Luxury Gold level, groups remains smaller than 15) I highly recommend spending the extra. It's worth it 100%. Lastly, I would just like to recommend Jalene Murphy to everyone. We've never even met her since I live in BC and she's in Edmonton, Alberta. I will continue to use her and this agency for our yearly adventures. They made it all so easy. When we did have a hiccup at the beginning of our trip (due to the airline, not the travel agency), she was leaving for the day and a coworker called her back as she was about to get into her car. Not only did she cheerfully do so, but she insisted on remaining on the phone with us until it was all sorted out. I (we) couldn't have asked for better. Thank you Jalene.

Paull Travel is astounding! Lesley and her team are so customer centric. I have had many times during business travel where flights are cancelled, and with their On-call number they provide they are able to advise flights what to do and calm the panic waters and angst when travelling.

Let me start by saying, What an amazing group of Ladies! Trips are bookEd for all sorts of things; business, holidays or unfortunately tragedy. I have used Paul travel before and was more than happy with the package they had done up for us. In this case one of our staff's mother passed away in Italy, during covid. Our staff member was devastated ,Thinking there was no way to travel to Italy because of the covid restrictions as well as time time frame he had to be there. I immediately called Paul Travel knowing they would be able to at least give him some information. To my surprise they said they could find a way to get him there. I directed him to the ladies. They got him safely to Italy , on time for his mothers funeral, and back home. WOW! All with covid restrictions. Can't say enough about Paul Travel. I don't travel much but will always make use of them! Thanks for being so Awesome!

Best agency for wealthy people that need support. Though not the fastest to respond, the communication is excellent and lovely people. However, if you are looking for a better deal than you can find yourself on the internet (and these days anyone can do it directly or even phoning the main company that provides the package), shop somewhere else. They charge $150 fees for something that you are able to to find online in 1 minute. Just the fact.

How long have you been a travel advisor?  

Some 43 years, I have owned Paull Travel for 36 years.

What is your specialty?

I have pretty much sold everything over the years, but in my perfect world right now, I sell high-end luxury travel, cruise and land. 

What inspired you to become a travel advisor? 

My mother told me to get a job, so I became a receptionist at a travel agency. It seemed like a good temporary plan at the age of 18 before university. But I am still here, never made it to university, and I am still loving the job on (most) days.

What’s the first trip you ever took? 

London, England to visit grandparents every couple of years starting at a young age. The flight stopped in Gander or Greenland to refuel. Now those were the old days.

What is your current state of mind?

Luckily after COVID, I still have a mind. I’m certainly much better than I was in 2020 or 2021. Those were dark days, but we stayed open with full staff and survived. I am proud of that. The sun is shining and I am very optimistic about the future. I think people who didn’t think they needed a travel agent before now know that they do. Which makes the job even more fun!

What are you most proud of?

Growing our office from one person to a fantastic team of 16. At least half have been here for well over 20 years.

I am proud to see “kids“ start and grow to be fantastic agents before my eyes and watch those who have been here for years always take care of the younger members when they need help or guidance – business or personal.   

What travel trends are you seeing these days?

There will always be the “fly and flop” vacations, but we are seeing more people look for something different.  Many are looking for more adventurous, longer trips, but also luxury small ship/expedition cruises to unique destinations such as Antarctica, the Arctic and the Galapagos Islands. And places like Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana...). It seems that after two years of not leaving the house, people are dreaming about what they would do “if”…and now they’re actually doing it instead of just dreaming it. It’s exciting! Also, with corporate travel, clients are really travelling as they truly value face-to-face time with suppliers. 

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way you do business?

It has made us all understand the value we have as agents, which has made it much easier to charge higher service fees.  We know we are worth it – and have proved that. We value ourselves more and realize we don’t want to work under stress constantly. Personal time is valuable.  Zoom and Teams are also always now part of our life.

Of all the bookings you’ve made, which itinerary are you most proud of?

That is a very tough question. There have been so many great trips (Peru, Asia, Antarctica, Myanmar…) but the most memorable (difficult to plan) was a group of seven ladies wanting to travel through India for 14 days. They wanted a very high-end experience – to the point of requesting restaurant reservations with tables facing specific directions. It was one of those files you never forget. They came back happy and I’m very proud of that. Some of their requests were almost impossible. It’s a memory!    

Where do you see your business one year from now?

I see our revenue at 35 per cent more than 2019. That is our achievable goal, in addition to continuing to be strongly independent and maintaining a brick and mortar location.    

What are your future goals? 

To continue with a happy office and find some more “family” members that like a team environment (and like wine on Fridays). There’s nothing more important than having the right people on the bus as the saying goes.   

What’s one thing you would change about the travel industry?

It is far more complicated than it needs to be. It needs to be streamlined to be less confusing for everyone.   

What’s your motto? 

“To go above and beyond” has been our slogan since we started in 1986. 

What’s your number one piece of advice to other travel advisors?

There are many opportunities right now in travel, so it’s the best time to find the job that best suits you. Do you like to work at home independently? Do you like to hand-hold selling vacations (I mean that in a nice way). A fast-paced corporate or a team environment? Everyone has different strengths and dreams.  Be sure you find the right place and make sure it feels right. If you do, it can be a fantastic career.      

Where are you travelling next?  

A Regent Seven Seas cruise from Bangkok to Tokyo with friends in February.

Fantastic experience: Not all travel agencies are equal ...Paull Travel is exceptional. I highly recommend their service. Sure, you can book vacations 'online' without professional assistance, but if it's a big trip, far away, perhaps somewhere you've never been with unknowns involved ..I suggest involving a travel agent from Paull Travel. Not only did Laura find me the perfect flights to Palma De Mallorca Spain and then returning from Salvador Brazil, she saved my butt when something very unforeseen occurred while in Tenerife, requiring me to fly home a month early. Thankfully Laura had advised me to purchase proper insurance. Flights were arranged on my behalf and Laura followed up with me throughout the day of travel as I returned, informing me of late flight arrival and options should I miss my connection. And then, the day after I arrived home ...Laura phoned me to ask if I was safe and well back home!! Wow. Just WOW!! Old school service and total peace of mind. Travel can be stressful. Engage Paull Travel the next time you want to take a trip!

Fantastic experience: Excellent experience booking flights and medical insurance for my mother-in law. Jalene at Paull Travel put her mind at ease and for a senior with mobility issues who hadn't flown for 15 years, this meant everything! The small details like her personalized luggage tag and contact with airlines to confirm wheelchair assistance were so appreciated. This seamless experience has given her the confidence to travel more at age 81 Thank you!!

Fantastic experience: My wife and I booked our South Africa safari honeymoon with Deanna at Paull Travel. She was very helpful in obtaining and explaining all of our options for packages and flights. However, the true value of having a professional on your side really comes out when something goes wrong. We missed the first leg of our flight to South Africa due to a massive Westjet tech outage. While everybody else at the airport around us was panicking and waiting for hours on hold with the airline, I put in a call to Paull Travel's after hours line. The agent who helped us quickly activated multiple members of the Paull Travel team, who spent multiple hours on a Sunday to work through all the options and rebook the whole outgoing part of the trip to get us to South Africa as quickly as possible. This team absolutely saved our honeymoon. I'm very comfortable booking travel online, and I had never used a travel agency before, but from now on I'll never book a big overseas trip without a travel agent. Deanna and the Paull Travel team will be top of my list.

American Airlines: Attempt to blame 9-year-old for being recorded in lavatory is 'an error'

American Airlines is changing direction after saying that a young girl was negligent after being recorded by a flight attendant in the lavatory.

In the filing on May 21 the airline claimed that one of the plaintiffs, a 9-year-old girl, was recorded in the bathroom through her “own fault and negligence.”

“[The] Plaintiff’s use of the compromised lavatory, which she knew or should have known contained a visible and illuminated recording device,” American Airlines response to the petition said.

Attorney Paul Llewellyn is representing two young girls who were recorded on separate flights, including the 9-year-old.

“I was both shocked and outraged,” Llewellyn told USA TODAY. “As a lawyer I understand that you have to assert possible defenses, but I cannot even imagine a world where it would ever be appropriate to blame a 9-year-old for being filmed in an airplane bathroom.”

In a statement to USA TODAY, American Airlines said that there was an error in the filing.

“Our outside legal counsel retained with our insurance company made an error in this filing. The included defense is not representative of our airline and we have directed it be amended this morning," an American Airlines spokesperson said in a statement. “We do not believe this child is at fault and we take the allegations involving a former team member very seriously. Our core mission is to care for people — and the foundation of that is the safety and security of our customers and team.”

Llewellyn said that this situation has greatly impacted the victims, especially since the images were not ever located.

“As a result of this has had a significant impact on them,” he said, “These images they could be on the dark web forever. These poor young girls for the rest of their lives will have this hanging over their heads and these intimate images of them exist out there and we don't know who has possession of them.”

Former American Airlines flight attendant was charged for allegedly recording minors on board several flights

On April 26, former American Airlines flight attendant Estes Thompson, 36, a Charlotte, North Carolina resident, was charged after prosecutors said he secretly recorded minors while they used the plane's lavatory.

Thompson allegedly has the recordings of four minors, ages 7, 9, 11 and 14 years old, that had been using the bathroom while he worked on the aircraft, a press release from the Department of Justice said.

Over 50 images of the 9-year-old victim were found in Thompson’s iCloud. In addition, the photos of the victim included images of her seated pre-flight and close-ups of her face while she slept on board, the press release said.

14-year-old girl provided evidence of the encounter

According to a criminal complainant filed on Dec. 1, 2023, the family of a 14-year-old girl filed a lawsuit alleging that Thompson secretly recorded her while she utilized the lavatory.

On a flight from North Carolina to Boston on Sept. 2, 2023, the young girl needed to go the bathroom and Thompson told her to use the first-class facility. Thompson said he needed to wash his hands before the girl used the facility, the complaint said.

After using the bathroom, the girl noticed that a phone was hidden beneath the seat's broken sign. The victim then pulled out her phone to take a picture of what she saw to show to her parents, the complaint said.

When she unlocked the lavatory door, Thompson was standing there and entered the bathroom again. The victim’s father then confronted Thompson about the photo. After taking a while to show his phone to the father, no intimate photos of the girl were visible, the complaint said.

Thompson’s charges

Following the incident with the 14-year-old girl, Thompson was arrested on Jan. 9 and charged with:

• one count of attempted sexual exploitation of children
• one count of possession of images of child sexual abuse depicting a prepubescent minor

"I think it is time for American Airlines to finally stand up and take responsibility for what happened instead of pursuing these frivolous legal defenses," Llewellyn said. "Why don't they take responsibility they claim to care about passengers they claim to take this case very seriously well actions speak louder than words."
