My Holland America Mediterranean Cruise. Why You Will Love It Too!

July 19, 2019 //  by  Linda Malys Yore //   4 Comments

Are you thinking of taking a Holland American Mediterranean Cruise?

Are you in the planning stages of your next solo or family vacation? Are you considering a European cruise?

If you are, you have come to the right place, because I recently sailed Holland America Line on their epic  Mediterranean Legends Cruise.

I plan to share with you all the fantastic amenities and experiences that made my cruise so spectacular. I want you to put Holland America Mediterranean Cruise at the top of your list.

By the way, I am not easily impressed when I travel.

I carry with me a lot of  requirements . As a fitness nut, is there access to a gym? Will there be a time and a place for me to run? How about the food?

As a vegan,  please do not tell me there are no vegan options or make me feel like it is an imposition to make me something vegan to eat. All cruises offer optional wifi when I travel but is it good, fast, and reliable?

I will address all these issues here and share my experiences with you so that you understand exactly what puts Holland America Cruises in a special category of its own!

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Koningsdam

My Holland America Mediterranean Cruise. And Why You Will Love It Too!

I have not been on an ocean cruise for over 10 years. There was an abundance of stops our ship would be making during its 13 day Mediterranean cruise.

I was very interested in the ship I would be spending my time on. So, I will begin with my home-away-from-home, the MS Koningsdam, and give you a tour around!

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Sunset

The MS Koningsdam

The first member of the Pinnacle Class of Holland America Line’s ships, the Koningsdam has a guest capacity of 2,650.

Like me, all were ready to relax at a myriad of locations on board, and explore the world-class ports of call we would be visiting.

On my Holland America Mediterranean Cruise aboard the MS Koningsdam, there were 200+ children. 400 guests were from Australia.  There were a lot of solo sojourners like me, and over 40 countries were represented!

Suites And Staterooms Aboard The Koningsdam

There are many options to choose from when it comes to an amazing stateroom onboard the Koningsdam. The length of your cruise and your budget will probably be factors, along with who you may be traveling with.

Inside Stateroom: Between 143-225 square feet, this room is like its name, inside with no windows.

But really, how long are you in your room anyway? All the action is onboard or onshore.

You still have an abundance of amenities, like the signature Mariner’s Dream bed with EuroTop mattress. And lots of storage, and a nice updated bathroom with premium massage showerheads.

Ocean View: Coming in at 175 t-282 sq ft., this room has all of the amenities listed above, plus a lovely window to view the world as you cruise past it. Or wake up to it each morning!

Verandah Stateroom: at 228-405 sq ft (including the verandah), this is the room I stayed in.

There were floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that lead out onto a very generous sized balcony, that I used every single day of the cruise. It was my own private sanctuary.

This category of room had a nice sized sitting area and desk to work at, plus all amenities listed already. Did I mention there is a flat-screened TV in all categories of stateroom?

Holland American Mediterranean Cruise stateroom

Vista Suite: 260-356 sq ft (including the verandah) this is a beautifully appointed suite with plenty of room to stretch out in and lots of storage space.

Signature Suite: 393-4– sq ft (including verandah), an even larger suite with added sleeping areas for additional guests. There is also a full-sized whirlpool tub in the bathroom and generous-sized sitting areas.

Neptune and Pinnacle Suites: these are of course the creme de la creme, the best of the best. They are the largest, and come with additional amenities like a private concierge, and use of the exclusive Neptune Lounge.

Here are some of my tips on how to pack lightly and smartly for your Holland American Mediterranean Cruise.

Tech Amenities

Every stateroom comes with a flat-screened television with a remote control to enjoy. There were live cable news shows, movies, and tv shows to watch.

Also, the television was a great communication tool to stay informed about the cruise, where we were, where we were headed.

You were able to sign up for shore excursions from the convenience of your stateroom or review your onboard charges in real-time.

An internet package while onboard the Koningsdam is something you may or may not want to pursue. During my cruise, I had the Premium option.

The Koningsdam uses satellite internet, and it was remarkably reliable.

If like me, you do not want to give up your social media channels. More importantly, you may want to have the comfort of being in touch with work, family or friends back home while onboard.

Then I would highly suggest you look into one of the several internet package options Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Line offers.

Please be advised that there may be times when the internet is out, or slower than usual, that comes with cruising. On this cruise, those spots were very few and far apart.

I can share that I was overall very pleased.

Navigator App

For the ultimate in convenience and ease, Holland America recommends guests download their Navigator application to their phone.

Everything related to you Holland America Mediterranean Cruise can be easily found on the app.

I find some apps on my phone are difficult to understand and not at all easy to learn. Not the case with the Navigator application.

It was very easy to use and an invaluable resource all throughout my Holland America Mediterranean Cruise. It is a must to download!

What had me calling Holland America several times before my cruise, was to inquire as to what kind of electrical outlets would be in my stateroom.

Would they be American outlets, thus compatible with all my electronic devices? Or would they be European outlets, meaning I would have to bring universal converters with me from home?

Happy to share, that the staterooms, had BOTH types of electrical outlets, and plenty of them. I brought my laptop, cell phone charging cord, and cell external battery charging cord.

And there were plenty of outlets for all of my devices.

Stateroom Safe

All staterooms come with a safe. I personally kept my passport locked in the safe and used my driver’s license for identification whenever I could.

I also locked my laptop, credit cards, etc in the safe when I was out festivating on board or in the spa, etc.

Refrigerator

Yes, all staterooms come with a refrigerator . I used mine to store fresh fruit and keep my bottled water cold.

I was very happy to have that refrigerator on hot afternoons when I returned from an outdoor excursion!

The Food And Where To Find It During Holland American Mediterranean Cruise

Part of the fun of a cruise, is the food, of course! It is how we nourish our bodies and our spirits. It is how we make friends while onboard.

Eating is when we reconnect with our family and happily share our experiences.  And the Koningsdam had an abundance of locations to eat and I want to tell you, the food was fabulous!

If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies of any kind, the culinary staff is eager and well-equipped to deal with them.

As a vegan, I was treated no differently than anyone else in my dining party and served top-notch food plated expertly, a feast for the eyes and the stomach.

Once I identified myself to the culinary staff, I was in expert hands. There was a dedicated vegetarian/vegan menu.

I could order each morning from that specific menu and have a delicious meal that evening.

Fine Dining Options On Your Holland American Mediterranean Cruise

The main dining room.

Always the most popular location for fine dining lunch and dinner, the main dining room is where most guests head to for a sophisticated ambiance to match the gourmet dining.

Unlike the olden days, you do not have to have a firm dinner reservations to eat in the main dining room.

There still is early and late dining reservation options, that I would say the majority of guests use. However, there is an ample section of the main dining room that is dedicated to “drop-in” dining guests.

It is always better to have reservations of course, but ‘drop-in’ dining is an option for you. On those days when you will arrive back later from a shore excursion or plan to participate in a game or watch a concert, the drop in dining option is always available.

Holland American Mediterranean Cruise Dining Room

There are also fabulous gastronomical experiences to be had onboard the Koningsdam that are an additional charge .

Perhaps to celebrate a special event, birthday, or anniversary.  I was fortunate enough to dine in them all.

And I will reiterate, having a dietary restriction, (I am vegan) did not challenge the world-class chefs at al!

The Pinnacle Grill  serves impressive food in a beautifully intimate setting inspired by the Pacific Northwest.

Canaletto  is an Italian Restaurant that served the most authentic Italian food I have ever seen. And I know because my mom was Italian! This food was extremely impressive.

Tamarind was by far my favorite fine dining restaurant. It was beautifully appointed and it offered an impressive and exotic menu of Asian foods.

Rudi’s Ser De Mer lovely  French food options to impress anyone!

Casual Dining On Your Holland American Mediterranean Cruise

Ok, let’s face it! You are on a cruise. Some days you may not feel like dressing up for dinner. Or simply do not want to go to dinner.

There is something appealing about lingering at the spa or the pool, right? Well, the Koningsdam has you covered.

Lido Market

Located on the Koningsdam’s Lido Deck on the 9th floor, the Lido Market was arguably one of the most popular casual places of all to eat.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner all had extravagant displays of foods from all lands.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Lido View

Located on both the port and starboard sides of the Koningsdam, the buffets on each side differed slightly from each other.

And you could find anything and everything under the sun that your heart and your tummy desired. I had lunch almost every day at the Lido Market.

I loved the Asian bowls and salad bowls. And my favorite, the pretzel rolls! Yikes….! The Lido Market was located right next to the spa and I could not resist!

For those days when lounging at the pool was the plan, Dive-In was a great choice for a burger, hot dog or fries poolside!

There was even a vegan burger that I had that was simply scrumptious!

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Dive In Lunch

Grand Dutch Cafe

Giving homage to Holland America Line’s Dutch heritage, the Grand Dutch Cafe was a great casual location to hang out and enjoy a pastry or gourmet coffee. An additional charge required.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Grand Dutch Cafe

Need a quick snack? Head to the Gelato Bar! Additional fee.

In-Room Dining

Probably the most decadent of things to do while cruising is ordering room service. Can you even imagine? Available 24 hours, around the clock, you can order just about anything to be delivered to your stateroom!

Entertainment On Your Holland American Mediterranean Cruise

Now we are talking, yes? It is a cruise, and we want to have some fun, right?

Well, the Koningsdam offered a wide variety of entertainment options and there was arguably something to please everyone. Some options were early evening, and some were well into the night.

Located on Deck 2 of the Koningsdam was the Music Walk , where guests had the option of spending their time at one venue or move about and enjoy several venues during their evening.

BB King’s Blues Club

This venue was by far my personal favorite! I closed it down several nights during my cruise. The BB King’s All-Star Band was exceptional.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise late night snacks

Late-night partying makes guests hungry! There was always an array of finger foods served late at night all along the Music Walk by a very friendly Holland America Mediterranean Cruise staff!

Billboard Onboard

Located a few steps away was Billboard Onboard. This was my second fave entertainment act.

I spent many an evening singing along with the two dueling piano players that complemented each other perfectly. They were amazing!

Lincoln Center Stage

World-class live chamber music orchestras entertained guests here.

Rolling Stone Rock Room

This live performance band played rock music nightly and was very popular.

World Stage On Holland American Mediterranean Cruise

The best that the entertainment field had to offer was presented here. I watched several shows here and was dazzled and impressed beyond expectations.

Authentic local dancers, popular singers, and an immersive entertainment movie experience were a few of the acts I was fortunate enough to see.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Vox Fortura performing on an brilliantly lighted stage

I am not a wine drinker yet I was eager to participate in a wine blending class during my trip.

At Blend , guests receive several wine samples set before them.  Then explanations about each individual wine from a highly trained sommelier and a sample test tasting of each followed.

My Blend experience consisted of learning about and tasting several types of red wine and them blending my favorites to create a new wine specifically crafted to my own tastes.

Finally, we had the opportunity to blend all our wines into a wine that suited our individual taste. The newly created bottle of wine could be taken to dinner to enjoy later on.

That was the fun part! Additional costs required.

Fitness Options On Holland American Mediterranean Cruise

I just feel better when I exercise. Are you the same way? I was so delighted with the fitness options onboard the Koningsdam.

The Fitness Center

Located on Deck 9 forward, was the Fitness Center that rivaled my hometown gym.

It had current up-to-date equipment and free weights. There were elliptical machines, and plenty of my favorite pleasure, the treadmill!  There were loads of bicycles as well.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Fitness Center with numerous treadmills

Personal trainers were always on hand to assist. And there was always a full day list of scheduled activities, from morning to evening that guests could participate in.

For example yoga, stretching, and instructor-led classes.

I was very impressed with the fitness center and very grateful to be able to use it. It was a very busy place so I think my fellow travelers thought the same!

Walking Deck On Holland America Mediterranean Cruise

If a formal gym does not interest you but you still want to get in a good workout, on Deck 3 there was a fabulous walking deck.

It was really popular and lots of guests got their daily steps in walking or power walking on Deck 3!

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Adult Family pool with lounge chairs and people swimming in the pool.

The Greenhouse Spa & Salon

Located on Deck 9 the impressive Greenhouse Spa & Salon was a very popular destination for a lot of guests.

Massages, manicures, pedicures, and hairstyling were just a few reasons it was so frequented by guests.

I treated myself to the thermal spa package recommended by my daughter Victoria from Follow Me Away . I am very glad I decided to take her advice and pamper myself because it was an extremely wise decision for me.

I purchased a pass for the duration of my cruise and I visited the thermal suite almost daily.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise thermal suite with warming benches and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The aromatherapy steam room was my favorite place to hang out. It had a huge window that allowed me to watch the world as we sailed by it.

The thermal chairs were the perfect place to sit and relax after a workout or long shore excursions.

The floor-to-ceiling windows of the thermal suite brought the outside in and it is an experience I shall never forget!

The Itinerary And Shore Excursions

Most likely you will select your Holland America  Mediterranean Cruise because of its itinerary.

For me, visiting the exotic and unbelievable ports of call in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, and Malta was a dream come true!

On this itinerary, you can see the best sights in Montenegro and experience the best food to eat in Greece!

There was so much history and authentic culture in each of those countries.

Holland America Mediterranean Konindsdam docked in the Bay of Kotor.

Through the shore excursions offered on the MS Koningsdam, I learned about each specific country’s past and how it is dealing with it today.

Plus, the Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Legends itinerary visits some of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful places in the world!

There were no intercom announcements in your stateroom during the cruise. No “good morning” announcements, or “it is time to leave” warnings… (Of course, in case of an emergency there would be.)

A guest’s comfort and privacy are the utmost priority for Holland America Line. If you wished to have the announcements heard in your room, that was possible through the television, using your remote control device to activate it.

The shore excursions desk was open daily and was located on Deck 1.

A guest could stop by to visit the experts or call them on the phone. Also, via the remote control, a guest could learn all about the shore excursions coming up and sign up for them in the comfort of their own room on their television.

And, do not forget the Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Navigator app!

With the turndown service, a  daily activities sheet was left for each guest for the next day in the stateroom.  My daily activities sheet was the full itinerary of activities on and off of the Koningsdam from morning until night.

Tickets for the excursions I  selected were either given me when I booked them at the excursion desk. Or left at my stateroom the evening before the excursion.

As there were multiple excursions every single day, I had to pay attention to the time I was required to be at the meeting location.

On the Koningsdam, it was usually the World Stage, but not always. There was always plenty of staff around to direct a confused or lost passenger to the proper spot.

Holland America Line has their once-in-a-lifetime excursions categorized to make selecting the perfect option for you and your family easy.

Encore Collection are options for guests who perhaps may have already visited a locale and want to discover what is beyond the popular attractions.

Cruise With Purpose Option are tours designed to benefit the local community.

World Wonder options highlight the historical and architectural treasures of the location being visited.

Signature Collection is for those who like to plan independently. Private transportation is arranged by the cruise line in advance.

Medallion Excursions are designed to provide an in-depth perspective and elite activities for those discerning guests.

Overland and Overnight Options provide additional options because the sky is the limit for Holland America Line when pleasing guests!

All excursions were also categorized by activity levels . It was important to know how easy or strenuous the excursion was going to be. And wear the proper footwear.

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise Taormina high up in the mountains overlooking the Ionian Sea

My favorite Italian city during my Holland America Mediterranean Cruise was Taormina, located high up in the mountains of Sicily.

I was persuaded by one of the knowledgeable Holland America excursion specialists to visit Taormina on one of the HAL shore excursions because I would fall in love with the city. I am so glad I followed her advice! Look at that view!

It was of paramount importance for the staff of the Koningsdam to be aware of which guests were on and off the ship at all times. At embarkation, guests were given their stateroom keycard .

It looked like a credit card. That keycard was our stateroom key to open the door, and also had onboard charging privileges because it was linked to our credit card.

Every time we left the Koningsdam, we had to present our personal keycard to be scanned by security. Upon arrival back to the ship, the keycard was scanned to signal our return.

We were then verified with the picture Holland American Line had of us in their passenger files and then permitted to reenter.

Next, for everyone’s protection was a security scanner which everyone and their belongings passed through.

The Staff. The Backbone Of The Trip.

The food could be the absolute best. The excursions could be the most captivating.

The staterooms could be the loveliest ever. But none of the experiences I had during my Holland America Line Mediterranean Cruise would have been as special if it were not for the extraordinary staff.

The staff of the MS Koningsdam definitely exemplified what it means to offer unparalleled service.

Every single staff member, from the captain himself to the kitchen staff working behind the scenes, put forth extreme effort to make the trip so very special,

Finally, I must add that I spoke with several members of the staff and crew and one major theme emerged. And that was how much they enjoyed their jobs and were blessed to be working for Holland America Line.

They also commented on how wonderfully the cruise line treats them: with courtesy and respect.

Matter of fact, several mentioned when they are at their homes with their own families, they miss their cruise family and are anxious to return to them! This was very impressive to me.

Holland America Cruise with friend Suzie

Here I am enjoying the epic cruise with my friend Suzie from Alternative Ageing .

Remember those 200+ children I mentioned earlier?

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise had them and their parents in mind with Camp HAL.  Club HAL welcomes children from ages 3 to 17 to their own fully supervised hang out spot!

The professionally trained staff offers parents peace of mind while the kids have tons of games and gadgets to choose from.

Club Orange

Holland America Line has introduced Club Orange for discriminating guests who wish to elevate their cruise experience to the next level.

Priority check-in and disembarkation is just the beginning of the amenities included. There is an exclusive Club Orange restaurant dedicated to only those who have upgraded to Club Orange status.

On my cruise, I was fortunate enough to have Club Orange status. Check-in was a breeze and I was in the first group to disembark at the terminal.

I ate at the dedicated Club Orange restaurant, which offered the same awesome food as the main dining room, in a much more intimate and quiet environment.

Other features included dedicated Club Orange lines at the front desk and the shore excursions desk, which cut down on wait times immensely.

Many more amenities and upgrades will be available to you if you upgrade to Club Orange status.

An upgrade to Club Orange must be done before your Holland America Cruise, so discuss with your travel agent, or call Holland America for further information.

It was really convenient, saved a lot of time. And, let’s face it, it is always so nice to feel extra special!

Holland America Mediterranean Cruise ship docked in the Bay of Kotor

I will never forget looking over at the MS Koningsdam docked in Kotor, Montenegro. It was an amazing sight.

Sailing with Holland America Line on the Mediterranean Legends Cruise was a dream-come-true for me.

I now have wonderful memories from all the fabulous experiences I had during my time onboard the Koningsdam and have made many new and wonderful friends. I would like to thank Holland America Line for hosting me.

Have you ever sailed with Holland America Line? Please share any tips or memories in the comments section below. If you have any questions about  Holland America Line Cruises, leave them in the comments section as well.

Please note: I was provided with a complimentary Holland America Mediterranean Legend’s cruise for myself and a guest, and a stipend, as an opportunity through Holland America Cruises for this honest review. All opinions are my own.

Sailing the Mediterranean with Holland America: Koningsdam Review

The Mediterranean is a wonderful place filled with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, sparkling blue water, along with delicious food and wine. From Split to Sicily, there is just so much to see and do in this incredible part of the world. One of the greatest ways to experience the best of the Mediterranean is by ship, which is why I chose a 13-day Mediterranean Cruise on board the MS Koningsdam with Holland America!

The MS Koningsdam offshore in Montenegro

For an impressive 145 years, Holland America has been introducing guests from around the world to new places and new cultures. They understand how a great travel experience can be transformative. Thanks to their carefully crafted itineraries, elegant ship, and five-star hospitality, I savored every moment on our Mediterranean Sea journey.

A glimpse onboard Holland America MS Koningsdam

Ship Overview

The Koningsdam was built in Italy in 2015 and is the largest ship ever constructed by Holland America. It is also the first of their Pinnacle-class ships, and combines 21st century elegance with nautical tradition. I learned that the ship’s design inspiration is from music, with its fluid lines, light-filled spaces and innovative dining and entertainment venues.

Photo Credit: Holland American MS Koningsdam Atrium

This ship can hold just over 2,500 guests, but with the incredible amount of space on board, it never felt too crowded. From multiple restaurants, theaters, clubs, casinos, pools, a spa and more, the MS Koningsdam is truly a destination all her own. On our sea days, I looked forward to exploring the ship as much as possible. You will never run out of things to do on board, trust me.

Accommodations

When I’m on a cruise, I love to go to sleep and wake up to the sights and sounds of the ocean. Therefore, a Verandah Suite was the perfect option for our home-away-from home with Holland America.

Holland America Verandah Suite - MS Koningsdam

These staterooms are filled with light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows which overlook a private verandah. I enjoyed sipping my coffee every morning out on the verandah, watching the world go by.

Holland America Verandah Suite MS Koningsdam

The space inside was just as enjoyable, with a sitting area situated next to two plush beds with Euro-Top mattresses. Holland America’s signature Mariner’s Dream beds are extremely comfortable, offering a wonderful night’s sleep after a busy day of exploring. Also, having that extra space with the sitting area is definitely worth the money, so that you never feel too cramped with you and your guest.

When you need to go to the bathroom in the evenings,  a nightlight switches on which is a nice touch so you can see where you’re going. Also, the USD ports on each side of the bed were very convenient for sharing your electronics overnights. I used the desk for a vanity, the perfect spot to do my makeup every morning. Thankfully, they provide you with a makeup mirror.

Holland America Verandah Suite Bathroom - MS Koningsdam

The bathroom had a good amount of counter space and plenty of shelves for storing our toiletries. The walk-in shower was also very spacious, with shampoo and conditioner product dispensers provided so you do not need to bring your own.

If you want to upgrade to an even more spacious room, then the Neptune Suite is an ideal choice. It also give you access to the Neptune Lounge.

Dining Options

There are almost a dozen dining options onboard the Koningsdam, offering everything from fresh sushi to sizzling steak. 24 hour in-room dining is always an option for those who are too relaxed to leave their room to eat.

Most meals can be enjoyed in the beautiful main Dining Room. They offer an elegant breakfast spread, leisurely lunches, or unforgettable multi-course dinners. And best of all, this is all included in the price of your cruise.

The Dining Room - Holland America MS Koningsdam

My most memorable meal I had in the Dining Room was their lobster dish served with roasted asparagus and carrots. It was a generous helping, with every bite being flavorful and delicious.

Another delicious and convenient option is the Lido Market, with a world of intriguing culinary possibilities to choose from. This modern marketplace is located steps from the Lido Pool. I thought all of their grab and go options were always fresh and tasty. In the morning, it was hard to resist their homemade bread and pastries. If you want something on the healthy side for lunch, their hearty salads from Wild Harvest really hit the spot. I also found myself coming here in the evening to enjoy ice cream and other desserts from Sweet Spot.

As far as fine dining that’s worth paying extra for while on board, Holland America is known for their culinary prowess. In fact, one of my favorites meals of the trip was at Tamarind, which earned praise from Condé Nast Traveler for cuisine “that rivals the top restaurants on land”.

Tamarind Restaurant - Holland America MS Koningsdam

Tamarind’s menu explores the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China, and Japan. Master Sushi Chef, Andy Matsuda, wanted the food here to honor the elements of water, wood, fire, and earth. You can enjoy deliciously creative dishes such as wok-seared lobster, Asian sea bass in a banana leaf, along with fresh sushi accompanied by chilled or heated sake.

Tamarind Restaurant Selections - Holland America MS Koningsdam

Along with Pan-Asian cuisine, there are additional restaurants on board that serve Italian, French, and American specialities.  We, of course, tried them all! The majority of the specialty restaurants are on Deck 2, clustered together on the way to the main dining room. One of the exceptions is Tamarind, which has a stunning spot overlooking the sea right at the back of the ship.

We enjoyed several breakfast meals and dinners in the private Club Orange venue. All Holland America guests who stay in Neptune or Pinnacle Suite categories are able to access exclusive Club Orange benefits: private dining venue, priority services, dedicated concierge hotline and more. For those staying in non-suite staterooms who are interested, Holland America does offer a small number of Club Orange memberships that are available for purchase.

Canaletto (Top Left), Rudi's Sel De Mar  (Top Right), Club Orange (Bottom Left), and Pinnacle Grill (Bottom Right)

Eating at the Pinnacle Grill was another highlight for us while on board the Koningsdam. Their menu focuses on premium ingredients, such as wild-caught king salmon from Alaska and sustainably raised beef from Washington State’s Double R Ranch. Every evening here, guests are offered a chance for you to experience the signature recipes of Culinary Council Chef David Burke. You can also expect boutique wines from around the world which perfectly compliment your meal.

If you’re traveling with kids and want to keep it really simple and casual, check out Dive-In for burgers and gourmet hot dogs, or New York Pizza for thin-crust pizzas and salads served up poolside. The Grand Dutch Cafe is another great option thanks to their specialty coffees, sandwiches, or cocktails and snacks in the evenings.

Activities Onboard

Most large cruise vessels have classic onboard facilities such as pool areas and casinos. While Holland America’s Koningsdam ship offers both of these, there is so much more to do in terms of relaxation and entertainment. There are actually too many to list but I’ll share a few of my personal favorites!

Main Pool - Holland America MS Koningsdam

At BLEND, wine connoisseurs and even novices can experience the art of wine making. This was such a unique activity which I absolutely loved. Created by Chateau Set. Michelle, Washington State’s oldest and most acclaimed winery, this intimate space allows guests to really get creative, and learn how to make their own special blend of wine. This is the only purpose-build wine-blending venue you’ll find at sea. The tasting table holds 10 guests who can choose from a selection of five barrels of single-vineyard red wine. We even got to take it with us to enjoy later at dinner and back in our stateroom!

Blend - Holland America MS Koningsdam

Along the same lines of culinary fun, America’s Test Kitchen is a great space with an enticing variety of live cooking shows, and hands-on workshops. This was designed exclusively with Holland America Line, and is offered on select ships including the Koningsdam. You can learn foolproof techniques and recipes for making delectable dishes with confidence. How amazing is it to be able to learn a new skill while on vacation?!

As a foodie, I also enjoyed going behind the scenes on the Koningsdam and seeing one of the ship’s galleys. With state of the art facilities, the talented chefs on board are able to create amazing dishes for us lucky guests at sea.

Galley Tour onboard Holland American MS Koningsdam

For those leisurely sea days, you can definitely find me at the spa. The Greenhouse Spa & Salon is a fantastic place on board to refresh, relax, and rejuvenate your mind and body. This tranquil retreat nurtures every aspect of your well-being with renowned spa rituals and healing touches.

Greenhouse Spa Massage Room - Holland America MS Koningsdam

I enjoyed their ELEMIS Aroma Stone Therapy several times, and the ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Age Defy Facial. The Hyperthermal pool and steam room are a great way to relax before or after your treatments. Before attending the captain’s dinner, I treated myself to their Fire & Ice Pedicure and had my hair done at their salon.

Greenhouse Spa & Salon - MS Koningsdam

The Fitness Center is equipped with the latest cardio and weight machines. You can work out at your own pace or try one of their many classes focusing on indoor cycling, Pilates, and more. There’s also some great outdoor space to exercise on the deck with the fresh, sea air. You’ll also discover backbetll and volleyball courts here.

Entertainment

Evenings on board the Koningsdam are absolutely electric thanks to the multiple entertainment venues you have to choose from. I was especially impressed with the World Stage. This is a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that surrounds you in high-definition. This dazzling theater combines innovation with entertainment. Here we enjoyed live music, dance, and a myriad of performances throughout out voyage.

As part of an exclusive partnership with Lincoln Center Stage, select ships with Holland America showcase exceptional live chamber music performances featuring classically trained violinists, violists, cellists and pianists. These world-class musicians perform multiple ensembles nightly and even play afternoon recitals during leisurely days at sea!

World Stage (Top), Vox Fortuna Performance (Lower Right), Lincoln Stage Symphony playing for BBC

Two of my favorite shows were Frozen Planet Live by BBC Earth Experiences, and the classical quartet Vox Fortura’s performance at the World Stage who us all.

The variety of entertainment that Holland America offers is very impressive! You can also enjoy world-class musicians from the B.B. King’s All Stars Band with two vocalists backed by a drummer, bassist, guitarist, sax players, trumpeter and organist. From funky and fast to soulful and smooth, the band does it all while you enjoy a signature drink or dance the blues away!

Billboard Onboard (Top Left), Lincoln Center Stage (Top Right), and B.B. King's Blues Club (Lower Left & Right)

Billboard Onboard showcases the talents of live musicians, including two pianists, a guitarist and a DJ, who take turns performing dynamic shows centered around the interesting facts and figures of the music industry as chronicled by Billboard. Featured on select ships, guests can sing and play along with trivia questions presented on screens throughout the room. It’s very entertaining and interactive!

Last but not least, is the vibrant casino. It’s hard to pass up on a game of roulette or black jack in the evening;  we enjoyed stopping after the shows and playing a hand or two.

Casino - Holland America MS Koningsdam

While the Koningsdam is certainly Holland America’s biggest ship, I was really blown away with how many intimate spaces and experience there were to enjoy on board. We called this floating city home for two weeks, and never ran out of exciting things to do and places to eat. Holland America really understands how to take care of you and makes sure your journey with them is memorable from the moment you step aboard, to the moment you say goodbye.

Where do I start…. WOW! WOW! WOW! I would love to do a stay on this ship. It looks brand spanking new clean and I love the decor. A luxurious way to check out the Med. Havent done a cruise yet (i keep saying this!) but seriously in the plans for the next year and thinking about checking out this cruise liner.

I think you’d be very happy with Holland America, especially for your first cruise experience!

What an impressive ship! I agree that a cruise is such a fantastic way to explore areas that are so rich in diversity. My Grandparents have long been Holland America fans, and we hope to do a cruise with them in the near future. I could also see us taking on the Mediterranean aboard this ship, luxury and class for sure!

They set the bar very high!

' data-src=

Wow people always say that cabins on ships are really tiny and you can’t swing a cat in them, your photos the cabin looks are a really decent size. The food looks amazing as well, its hard to know when to stop eating when there is so much on offer.

Very spacious rooms and excellent dining options!

What a wonderful cruise on the Mediterranean. I would so love to do this. I can’t believe all the activities and entertainment on board. Love the idea of making your own wine, that would be fun. And that wraparound screen must be amazing. The food sounds to die for too. Am seriously considering the Holland America cruise ship.

Everything on the ship was so fabulous!

' data-src=

This is luxury to the best! I can only imagine what an amazing time you must have had. It is astounding to know about the various entertainment options, activities and array of food you had there. I have never been on a cruise before, and this post makes me hop into one!

I was so impressed with this Holland America ship!

' data-src=

I am not much of a cruise person. I took one cruise (Alaska Inner Passage) about 20 years ago, and haven’t really considered a cruise since then. But holy cow does this look amazing! The ship, the amenities, the food. Just wow! Maybe it’s about time for another cruise?!?

Yes, definitely time to consider another one! This doesn’t even include all of the amazing onshore sights every day.

This looks like a great way to travel the Mediterranean in luxury. We plan to really go sailing in the Mediterranean on an 11m sailboat next year. It’s not only more environmentally-friendly but it’s also more budget-friendly. At least the way we thought it out. And cruises… I don’t know, maybe when we grow older and choose to trade adventure for comfort and relaxation 🙂

Yes, definitely worth treating yourself!

' data-src=

I’ve been on Holland America cruises before, but on much smaller ships than the Koningsdam. I’m not a big fan of huge crowds but it’s nice to know that there are plenty of small areas and cozy spots to relax on the ship. Great guide to the ship and your trip!

Amazingly, the ship never felt crowded!

' data-src=

I’m from the UK. These travel tips look amazing. I definitely loved to try this.

It’s an incredible cruise, I hope you can enjoy soon!

HOLLAND AMERICA IN KOLCURA - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Getting to Know the Ship – Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

The Oosterdam cruise reviews provide a great opportunity to learn about the ship. From its luxurious suites and production shows to its amazing food and great customer service. The Holland America Line’s Oosterdam is a Vista Class cruise ship that offers an exciting Mediterranean cruise experience for avid travelers. It has been recently refurbished with modern amenities for an enhanced guest experience. Rolling Stones Rock Room offers passengers freedom to enjoy music and dance all night long. Additionally, there is also a main dining room where guests can savor delicious meals and drinks throughout their journey. The Oosterdam reminds me very much of it’s sister ship the Westerdam. With its comfortable interiors, private balconies, and attentive staff, the Oosterdam provides an unforgettable experience to everyone who steps onboard.

Embarking and Disembarking

Passengers of the Oosterdam Cruise will enjoy an efficient embarkation and disembarkation process, ensuring a smooth transition between destinations. On this particular cruise we were welcomed aboard in Trieste, Italy before heading to Croatia. Split was our first port of call. I have to say, Holland America does an amazing job on their embarkation process. It’s probably one of the fastest and smoothest we’ve seen. From the time we arrived to the time we got on board was less than 30 minutes.

Once on board , Holland America will send your luggage to your room. Then you can explore the ship with ease using Holland America’s Navigator app. The app provides daily schedules, dining reservations and onboard activities. (more about that below). Guests are encouraged to take full advantage of the amenities available on board including Lido Market for snacks. The Dive In by the Lido deck pool is perfect for refueling after your embarkation process. Once you’ve gotten a bite to eat we recommend exploring the ship. This gives you a chance to get a gage on where everything is located to make your week run smoother. With such convenience and freedom, the embarkation and disembarkation process aboard Oosterdam cruise is sure to make your travel experience even more enjoyable.

The Navigator App

Navigator app ensures travelers aboard the Oosterdam Cruise have access to daily schedules, dining reservations, and onboard activities for an effortless journey in the Mediterranean. This application serves as a great asset to guests traveling on the east mediterranean cruise with Holland America Line. It allows them to book tables at Canaletto restaurant or Pinnacle Grill. Guests can also check their daily itinerary, receive updates about events and activities happening onboard, and keep track of their expenses. With this innovative technology, passengers can enjoy maximum convenience while exploring the stunning destinations of Croatia or Greece. The app also includes helpful tips and advice for travelers looking for more freedom during their time on board the Oosterdam Cruise.

Holland America Verandah Bedroom

Oosterdam Cruise Reviews – The Verandah Staterooms

Offering a home away from home experience, Verandah staterooms on the Oosterdam promises to transport guests into a world of luxury and comfort. These spacious rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies. This allows guests to enjoy the natural beauty of the Mediterranean while still having their own space. There is a queen size bed, a small couch and even a bathtub which is a nice extra touch. I would also like to mention that there was plenty of closet space which we loved. The perfect blend of comfort and privacy make these Verandah staterooms an ideal choice for those looking for a truly luxurious experience.

Oosterdam Cruise Reviews – Fine Dining and Casual Dining Options

For those looking to indulge in a unique culinary journey, the Oosterdam offers an array of fine and casual dining options. With gourmet creations crafted by skilled chefs, guests can choose from a variety of venues to satisfy their appetite. From Italian-inspired cuisine at Canaletto restaurant. To premium steaks and seafood at Pinnacle Grill, what kind of culinary adventure will you embark on? Enjoy exquisite dishes such as handmade pastas and authentic Italian dishes at Canaletto. Or savor succulent cuts of beef accompanied by delectable sides at Pinnacle Grill. For those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, the Dive-In serves up classic burgers and hot dogs, with refreshingly creative twists. One of my favorite sandwiches at the Dive is their chicken sandwich! Make sure to get your fries covered in cheese or their Dive In sauce!

Lido Taco Bar

There is also a taco bar on the Lido. This is the only place on the ship you can find something salty and crunchy. The tortilla ships… Thats the one thing I wish Holland America would have more of. Things like pretzels, popcorn etc. I heard a lot of the same comments from other passengers as well. One of the comments we kept hearing over and over on this ship is that the food on Holland America is so much better than other cruises we’ve been on. We would have to agree.! Whether it’s an intimate dinner or gathering with friends over drinks – Oosterdam has something for everyone!

Holland America Westerdam Pinnacle Grill

Pinnacle Grill

The Pinnacle Grill aboard the Oosterdam, a Holland America Ship, is a culinary haven that epitomizes sophistication and indulgence. This elegant dining venue offers a refined ambiance where guests can savor an exquisite array of culinary delights. Known for its premium steaks and seafood, the Pinnacle Grill presents a menu that showcases the finest ingredients prepared with precision and artistry.

The attention to detail extends beyond the cuisine. With impeccable service and a warm, inviting atmosphere that sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in gourmet pleasures, the Pinnacle Grill promises a journey of flavors and tastes that elevate the cruise adventure to new heights of culinary excellence. We recommend trying the candied bacon served on a close-line. But don’t just eat the bacon by itself, cut off a tiny sliver of the rosemary hanging and add a little bit of lemon juice that comes and oh… my .. wow!

Canaletto - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Canaletto, nestled within the Oosterdam, a Holland America Ship, offers a delightful culinary escape that captures the essence of Italian flavors and ambiance. This charming dining venue invites guests to savor the rich and diverse tastes of Italy, with a menu featuring a medley of traditional and contemporary Italian dishes. The warm and inviting atmosphere mirrors the welcoming trattorias of Italy, creating the perfect setting for a leisurely meal. From freshly prepared pastas to delectable seafood and antipasti, Canaletto presents a culinary journey that transports diners to the heart of Italian cuisine. Whether enjoying an intimate dinner for two or a gathering of friends and family, Canaletto promises an authentic and memorable dining experience that adds a touch of Italian passion to the cruise adventure.

Canaletto just put out a new menu, and we were very fortunate enough to get to try it on on our cruise. I recommend the Casarecce pesto Genovese and the veal and sage meatballs. They are both absolutely delicious. Caneletto is located in the Lido Market.

Explorations Cafe - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Explorations Cafe

The Explorations Café aboard the Oosterdam, a Holland America Ship, is a serene haven designed for both relaxation and intellectual enrichment. This inviting space seamlessly combines a comfortable coffeehouse atmosphere with a treasure trove of knowledge. Guests can indulge in premium coffees and teas while perusing an extensive collection of books and magazines, or they can access the ship’s internet for online browsing. The tranquil ambiance, complete with cozy seating and panoramic views, provides the ideal setting for quiet contemplation or engaging conversations. Whether seeking a moment of solitude or a stimulating exchange of ideas, the Explorations Café offers a haven of serenity where passengers can unwind while nurturing their curiosity amidst the backdrop of the open sea.

For our specific itinerary we cruised the east mediterranean. here is a list of the specific ports we visited. Shore excursion tip: If you didn’t get to book an excursion, if you go down to the Guest Services and wait to see if there are any no shows, you will be on standby. Two of the passengers with us on this trip were able to get on a really nice excursion this way. We also mentioned each excursion that we did at each port. They were all AMAZING!

Our Ports and Excursions on This Trip:

Gondola Ride in Venice - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Fly into: Trieste (Venice), Italy . – I recommend getting here a few days early to see Venice. I honestly think 2 days is enough. We stayed at the Hilton Molino Stucky which included a really nice breakfast buffet. They also offered a water taxi to and from Piazza San Marco and Zattere. The cost for the water taxi was only $15 for your whole stay. It runs 7 days a week. You can get here from the airport or by train.

Kirka Falls - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Split, Croatia – Krka Nationa Park Excursion . We absolutely loved this place, it was so beautiful. This was pretty shaded on the walk to the waterfalls. The waterfalls were stunning and the water was so clear, you could see the Salmon swimming.

Ephesus - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Korcula, Croatia – We did not book an excursion, we loved walking around the port and we recommend packing your swimsuit. Full post coming soon on this port.

Santorini - Oosterdam Cruise Reviews

Thira (Santorini), Greece – Archaeoligical Aklrotiri & Oia Town. This was a lovely tour. Our only comment for the tour operator is on hotter days like they day we were on maybe be considerate of how much time is spent in each place in the hot sun. The tour guide was really detailed but maybe could be a little less during the months of July/August when there are extreme heat warnings. It was extremely hot that day.

Grand master palace

Rhodes, Greece – The Best of Lindos Acropolis & Rhodes Town. This was a great tour. We saw the Doric temple of Athena, visited the Palace of the Grand Master and strolled the medieval streets.

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey – The Best of Ephesus. This was our favorite excursion. So much history to soak up! Our tour guide was amazing and extremely knowledgable. Lunch buffet was included and the food was very good.

Santorini

Piraeus (Athens), Greece – Disembarked but we are staying 3-4 days in Athens. We booked a cheap place to stay using the Hopper App. Use code: CONSUMERQUEEN for $25 off your first hotel stay.

We’ll actually being doing separate posts on each port soon. So Make sure you subscribe!

2024 Cruise Line Reviews

Holland America Review

  • Holland America
  • Best for older guests (50+)
  • 11 ships in the fleet
  • Mid-size ships (1,400-2,600 passengers, depending on the ship)
  • Over 500 itineraries with stops in 100+ countries

Holland America Line offers a wide range of itineraries to various destinations worldwide. The company has been in operation since 1873, making it one of the oldest cruise lines in the world. With a reputation for offering exceptional service, exquisite cuisine, and a sophisticated onboard experience, Holland America Line is a popular choice for older travelers looking for a luxurious and elegant vacation. The Holland America fleet is made up of mid-sized ships, which allows for a more intimate and personalized experience than many of the larger cruise ships on the market.

No shortage of spring break cruises in the Caribbean

It was no problem finding options for our comparison cruise: a Caribbean sailing in March, booked a little under a year in advance. There were 23 cruises to choose from, all departing from Ft. Lauderdale ( hooray for no international flights required for US travelers ). Three of those sailings were priced at $799 per person for a seven-day sailing, with itineraries for Eastern, Western, and "Tropical" Caribbean. Even the 21-day Caribbean itineraries were reasonably priced at $2,359 or less per person.

Look for promos that give you more included in your fare

And, at the time of this evaluation, Holland America was offering the "Have It All" promotion on some sailings, a premium package that included four "high-value amenities" for the first and second guest on each booking:

  • Shore Excursions: $100 credit on sailings of 6-9 days, $200 on sailings of 10-20 days, and $300 on sailings of 21+ days
  • Premium Beverage Package: Wine, beer, spirits, cocktails, sodas, specialty coffees, and more
  • Specialty dining at Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, Tamarind

No assigned dining locations or times

In terms of dining, Holland America is known for offering exceptional cuisine. The company has partnered with renowned chefs, such as Jacques Pepin and Rudi Sodamin, to create menus that are both sophisticated and delicious. Passengers can choose from a variety of dining options, including formal dining rooms, specialty restaurants, and casual eateries. Holland America also offers a unique dining experience called "As You Wish" dining, which allows passengers to choose when and where they want to dine each night.

Best Cruise Lines

Children welcome, but most guests are 55+

Children are welcome to sail on Holland America cruises. However, Holland America is primarily known as a cruise line that caters to adults, especially those over 50 years old ( in fact, 75% of their passengers are age 55+ ). As a result, Holland America does not have as many activities and facilities designed for children compared to other family-oriented cruise lines. They're trying, though: they have Club HAL, which is their youth program that offers age-appropriate activities and entertainment for kids and teens from 3-17 years old, but those are only available during specific hours. They also have family-oriented shore excursions and some onboard activities like swimming pools, movies, and game rooms. Additionally, Holland America's dining options cater to children with kid-friendly menus and options.

Most onboard entertainment is for the older set

Entertainment on Holland America sailings definitely trends "mature" , with live music, theater productions, and enrichment programs such as cooking classes and wine tastings. The line also has partnerships with institutions such as BBC Earth and the Lincoln Center Stage, which provide unique and educational experiences for passengers.

Gratuities are extra but can be modified

Holland America will charge gratuities to your onboard account: $16 per guest per day for non-suite staterooms and $17.50 per guest per day for suites. They call this "Crew Appreciation" and emphasize that it's an important part of their team's compensation - but, unlike some cruise lines, you're allowed to modify the amount if you wish (for poor service).

Solid choice for cruising - especially for older guests

Holland America Line is a premium cruise line that offers a luxurious and sophisticated onboard experience. With a focus on personalized service, exceptional cuisine, and immersive entertainment and enrichment programs, Holland America is a popular choice for older travelers looking for a relaxed yet classy vacation to the world's most sought-after ports of call.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

Holland America is out with another truly epic cruise

Gene Sloan

Holland America is taking inspiration from the 1920s again for its latest over-the-top Mediterranean cruise.

The Seattle-based line revealed plans Tuesday for an epic, 45-day sailing from North America to the Mediterranean and back that mimics an ambitious voyage the line offered in 1925.

Scheduled to depart Oct. 7, 2025, the Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage itinerary, as it's being called, will offer North American travelers a chance to experience a grand tour of the Mediterranean without ever getting on a transatlantic flight — just like in the 1920s.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It's the second such voyage the line has put on its schedule in the past year, joining a 42-night sailing from the U.S. to the Mediterranean and back that is already on Holland America's schedule for November.

One notable difference between the newly announced sailing and the one taking place later this year: The first voyage begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, while the new sailing begins and ends in New York City.

Like the previously announced sailing, the new voyage takes place on Holland America's 1,432-passenger Volendam. It'll bring calls at 18 ports across eight countries, including multiple stops in Greece for visits to such historic sites as the Parthenon in Athens and Knossos Palace on the island of Crete.

Other stops include Ponta Delgada in the Azores archipelago of Portugal as the ship crosses the Atlantic eastward from New York, followed by a call in Portugal's capital, Lisbon.

There will also be overnight visits to Civitavecchia, Italy (the gateway port for Rome); Alexandria, Egypt (the gateway port for Cairo and its pyramids); and Istanbul — all known for their historic sites dating to ancient times.

holland america mediterranean cruise reviews

Barcelona is also on the schedule, as is La Goulette, Tunisia (the port for Tunis, where cruisers can tour the ruins of the ancient city of Carthage); Gibraltar; Cadiz and Cartagena in Spain; and Kusadasi, Turkey. Kusadasi is a gateway port to visit the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus.

Two more calls are Livorno, Italy (the gateway port for Pisa and Florence), and Naples, Italy, a jumping-off point for visits to the ancient ruins of Pompeii.

The cruise concludes Nov. 21, 2025 in New York after a return trip across the Atlantic.

The 1925 version of the itinerary was relatively similar, also beginning and ending in New York and including stops at ports near many of the Mediterranean's most famous historic sites. That trip took place on the fourth version of Holland America's Rotterdam (the line has had seven ships called Rotterdam over the years, including one currently sailing).

Holland America says 550 passengers were aboard the original sailing, which departed from New York City on Feb. 4, 1925.

holland america mediterranean cruise reviews

The original itinerary in 1925 had 15 stops, many of which are on the new itinerary.

One big difference between the original itinerary and the two new versions of it was that the original sailing was a longer 67 days. This was in part because the ship spent nine full days docked in Egypt for off-ship touring of the country's many historic sites.

Another difference between the trips is that the 1925 version of the voyage wasn't a "closed loop" trip on a single ship — that is, it didn't return passengers to North America at the end of the sailing on the same ship that took them to Europe.

Instead, the voyage ended in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and passengers had to switch to another Holland America ship for the final transatlantic leg back to New York City.

holland america mediterranean cruise reviews

Founded in 1873, Holland America was originally a shipping and passenger line known for transatlantic crossings that took people between North America and Europe. But starting in the 1920s, it began to occasionally offer what today would be considered more traditional cruises, taking leisure travelers to far-off destinations such as the Mediterranean for sightseeing.

The February timing of the 1925 sailing to the Mediterranean would have coincided with the time of year when there was less demand for transatlantic crossings.

A 'legendary voyage' for Holland America

The new Mediterranean itinerary announced Tuesday is the latest addition to a new series of Legendary Voyages that Holland America unveiled in 2023. The extra-long sailings, scheduled to take place over the next three years, focus on a single region and range from 25 to 59 nights in length. They also feature special programming.

The initial lineup of Legendary Voyages included both previously offered routings and some all-new routes — the latter including an epic itinerary focused on Japan scheduled for 2024 that will last more than 50 days.

In general, the voyages focus on far-off destinations — including Australia and New Zealand, the Amazon and South America, the South Pacific and Hawaii, Greenland and Iceland, Asia, and Alaska and the Arctic Circle. But in a twist, most sailings are designed to begin and end in a North American port, meaning that North American passengers can reach distant places without ever getting on an international flight.

Related: Holland America to offer epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska

The new lineup of long trips is designed to augment Holland America's celebrated collection of even longer Grand Voyages — far-ranging, often world-circling sailings that typically are 70 nights or longer.

The initial grouping of Legendary Voyages announced in 2023 included 17 specific departures between late 2023 and early 2025. Holland America has since added additional departures.

Holland America has long been known for longer sailings from U.S. ports that brought people to far-flung places around the globe. The new Legendary Voyages and an expanded lineup of other long voyages mark a doubling down by the line on such trips.

Fares for the new Mediterranean itinerary start at $5,749 per person, not including taxes, fees and port charges. For more information, see the page for the sailing on Holland America's website.
