Get last minute tickets to a concert or game

ottawa tourism coupons

A great, reliable source for last minute tickets is Stubhub . You can often pay less than the face value of the ticket when you purchase it a few minutes before the show or event.

The Royal Canadian Mint

Just down Sussex Street, a little ways past the National Art Gallery, you’ll find the Royal Canadian Mint where all of Canada’s money used to be produced.

Established in 1908, these days the main responsibility of this outlet of the mint is to produce hand-crafted collector and commemorative coins, gold bullion coins, medals (including the 2010 Vancouver Olympic medals) and  commemorative coins.

Take one of the affordable, guided tours of the mint during a weekday and you’ll actually witness parts of the coin production process.

Along the way, you will learn interesting insights about the features and details of coins, how imperfections can make a coin more valuable, what makes the mint-produced Vancouver Olympic medals so unique and the intriguing stories that the mint-created one-million dollars coins created.

TIP: This is a popular Ottawa attraction. Purchase your tour tickets first thing in the morning.

The RCMP Stables

The RCMP Musical Ride, a ceremony where Royal Canadian Mounted Police display their horse riding abilities by performing a variety of cavalry drills to music, has been a Canadian tradition dating back to 1887.

A wonderful cheap, fun thing to do in Ottawa is to visit the Rockcliffe Stables where the Mounties train their horses.

See the musical ride being rehearsed, visit the tack room, walk through the museum and see various uniforms and the carriage the Queen uses when she visits Canada.

Admission is free but donations to support the RCMP Foundation, which funds programs for at-risk children, are welcome.

Excellent Exercise

With the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River, beautiful neighbourhoods and gorgeous gardens Ottawa is one of Canada’s most picturesque cities.

What better way to see it and take it all in than by bicycle?

Ottawa makes it easy to do just that with over 170 kilometres of scenic bike paths winding through the city.

Didn’t bring your bike?

No problem.

Renting a set of wheels is a cheap thing to do—just $7 a day from BIXI Bike .

Parliament Hill isn’t the only place where people spend their day trying to climb to the top.

Channel your inner mountaineer and head to Clip ‘N Climb , the indoor climbing centre. Colourful,  exhilarating and fun, here you can challenge your strength and nerves by undertaking a variety of climbing quests. Cost is just $13.95.

Kind of Creepy

Ottawa may seem like a civilized city but it has its share of skeletons in the closet too–and we don’t just mean on Parliament Hill! Learn more about them by taking a Haunted Walk of Ottawa tour.

Your spirited tour will take place in the black of night. Ooooo, scarey fun or what?!

Each walk is well-researched and led by a lantern-carrying guide dressed in a cloak.

Embark on this cheap, fun thing to do and you’ll feel a shiver go up your spine as you hear some of Ottawa’s most famous facts, harrowing ghost stories and tongue-wagging tales from its dark past.

Adults are $13.75, students $11.75 and kids (if they dare) are just $8.75.

Make a Splash

If it’s a hot, sunny day there’s no better place to be than a waterpark. Luckily for you Ottawa has a good one— Mount Cascade Waterpark –and it’s a cheap fun thing to do, too—only $12.99 per person, with kids 2 and under free.

Here’s something else the thrifty side of you will appreciate—unlike those expensive waterparks, this one allows you to bring in a picnic lunch if you want. There are picnic spots located throughout the park.

If you want an even cheaper way to stay cool, hitting an Ottawa beach is the thing to do.

There are four beaches located in the city, so grab your speedo, shades, towel, sunscreen, snacks and a good book and make a dash to enjoy some splash.

Ample Animals

Feel like talking to the animals?

Visit the Canada Agricultural Museum .

This cheap thing to do is an actual working farm.

Head to the barn for fun and see animals like dairy and beef cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens.

Learn about beekeeping too and check out the tractor display.

Admission is only $9 for adults, kids are $6 or you can get a family pass for $23.

Another great place to see animals and experience the farming way of life is the Valleyview Little Animal Farm .

They have a newborn section where if your timing is good, you might see an animal that’s just a few days old.

You can feed the animals too; a handful of feed is just 25 cents.

Admission is an affordable $8 per person.

If you prefer your animals with a little more bite, than the cheap thing to do would be to visit Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo .

Here you’ll find over 150 species on display including giant pythons, huge alligators, cobras, rattlesnakes, tarantulas, marmosets, and birds of prey.

Admission is $10 per person or a family pass is $38.

People Flock to this Place

If you’re fascinated by birds, a visit to the Wild Bird Care Centre is a must.

Located in the Stoney Swamp Conservation Area, every year the Centre treats and releases over 2,000 birds that have been injured.

You never know what types of birds you’ll see—they’ve treated everything from falcons and turkey vultures to a bald eagle and even a pink flamingo–so every visit is a fun surprise.

To see the birds is a cheap cheap thing to do; all it costs is a donation.

Hunker in the Bunker–a secret government bomb shelter

The Cold War (1945-1991) was a period in history where the Western world, led by the United States, and the Communist world, led by Russia feared a possible nuclear attack from one another.

That fear motivated the Canadian Government to build a top-secret, four-storey underground bunker to house the Prime Minister and over 500 key personnel in the event of an attack.

Hidden in the countryside, 30 km west of Ottawa, the bunker cost between $30-50 million to build and was completed in 1961.

Today the Diefenbunker (named after John Diefenbaker, the Prime Minister at the time of the bunker’s construction) is a National Historic Site and museum.

Marvel at the 14-foot thick, steel doors that were designed to withstand the blast of a nuclear bomb, a massive vault for housing 65,000 gold bars, escape hatches, the Prime Minister’s quarters, a military command centre, radio station, medical centre, cafeteria–everything you can think of to survive a nuclear attack, underground.

For $40, a family of five can take a tour or, if you’re visiting solo this affordable thing to do is just $14.

More Fresh Air

In the mood to venture a little beyond the city limits?

Gatineau Park makes an awesome day trip.

Over 350 square kilometres, the park is the perfect outdoor playground for hiking, swimming, mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, boating, fishing and geocaching.

In the winter, there are maintained trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.

Admission to the park is just $10 per vehicle.

For an affordable outdoor experience that’s a little different, make your way to the Philippe Lake area and hike to Lusk Cave .

Oh, did we mention you’ll need a flashlight, bathing suit and a spare pair of shoes (water shoes if you’ve got them) because you’ll be walking along a stream to explore this cave and at certain points the water can be up to your waist!

All this thrilling, fun, cheap thing to see and do will cost you is 10 bucks to park your vehicle.

Feel Like A Cheap Movie?

Want to see a movie on the cheap?

Ottawa’s Rainbow Cinema is the spot for you.

It shows newly released movies for only $5. Go to a 10:00 A.M. show and it’s only $3. And if you go on a Tuesday it’s even cheaper– just $2, all day!

Looking for a Cheap Laugh?

In the mood to kick back and enjoy a few laughs?

Open Mic Mondays at the Absolute Comedy comedy club is ideal. It’s fun and cheap.

Every Monday night they feature amateur Ottawa comedians on their downstairs stage and to get through the door you only have to cough up $4.

Want to see the professional comedians?

It’s just $10 bucks to split your gut on Thursdays.

Be thrifty and practical! This information was accurate when published, but can change without notice. We recommend you confirm all details with the provider in question before planning your excursion.

How to make the most of a four-day getaway in Ottawa

ottawa tourism coupons

Whether it's on two wheels, by foot or cruising the canal, there are many ways to discover Ottawa in a new light. Ottawa Tourism

Your last visit to Ottawa might have been for Canada Day, or in the winter for a skate on the Rideau Canal. But that delightful stretch of time between late summer and early fall delivers some of the city’s best weather, when there’s ample green space to enjoy. And, the city is making it extra sweet for visitors to explore the country’s capital right now.

With the 3rd Night on Us hotel promotion, visitors who book a stay at a participating hotel between now and Oct. 10, 2022 will get their third consecutive night free (conditions apply). History lovers can’t go wrong with a stay at the Fairmont Château Laurier , which is located in the city’s downtown core right between the ByWard Market and the Rideau Canal.

For design fans, the Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market is an ultra-contemporary hotel about 10 minutes from Parliament Hill. And the Westin Ottawa is a family-friendly and dog-friendly spot; there’s a delicious kids’ menu and the hotel welcomes each child with a travel journal, so they can keep track of their adventures.

Day 1: Must-dos with a twist

Check into your hotel, then get your bearings. Start by knocking the city’s must-dos off your list: Rideau Canal , Parliament , Rideau Hall and the ByWard Market . Even if you’ve visited before, there are still plenty of surprises to discover: At Parliament Hill, make sure to check out the Parliament Hill Escarpment Stairway , which connects the Hill to the Ottawa River. It offers spectacular views of the escarpment – and, since it winds through the trees, you’ll get beautiful shots of the changing leaves when the fall season hits.

When at Rideau Hall, make sure to stop by the Tent Room , a ballroom added to the Hall during the tenure of Canada’s third governor general, Lord Dufferin. Until the 1960s, it did double duty as an indoor tennis court by day, before being festooned with red-and-white striped fabric at night to host dinner parties and receptions. These days, the fabric stays up 24/7, so the room feels a little like you’re at the circus, in the most Instagrammable way.

Then, combine sightseeing with dinner and sign up for one of C’est Bon Cooking ’s guided food tours of the ByWard Market. The Taste of Lowertown tour focuses on hidden gems on Dalhousie and Murray Streets, which sit on the outskirts of the ByWard Market neighbourhood. The range of flavours you’ll enjoy run from northern Canadian to Southern barbecue, with some sweet stops to top it off.

Day 2: Shop ‘til you drop

In the morning, head back to ByWard Market for brunch (and maybe a haircut!) at Headquarters . The multipurpose space is part café, part restaurant, part cocktail bar and yes, part hair salon. Brunch is served seven days a week and the offerings are decadent: Think, waffles served with spiced rum cherries jubilee or brunch poutine, featuring shoestring fries topped with maple bacon, cheese and a fried egg.

From there, plan to hit some of the coolest shops in the city. Splurge on a new outfit at Victoire , which has been championing independent Canadian fashion designers since 2006. Then, head to The Record Centre . Owner John Thompson has created a space where music lovers can browse his massive collection – he says he has about 100,000 records stored in the basement of the shop – while musicians swing by to connect with one another, and sometimes even play a tune or two. The savviest shoppers will plan their trip to coincide with 613flea , a huge, not-for-profit monthly flea market that features over 200 vendors from the city’s creative community.

Have a leisurely dinner at La Terrasse in the Fairmont Château Laurier. The massive surf and turf Caesar is a must, and can be shared with a friend. The over-the-top garnishes include shrimp and local charcuterie.

Day 3: Thrill rides

One of the best ways to see Ottawa is by bike. Spend your morning on a guided tour with Escape Bicycle Tours & Rentals – there’s an option for just about every interest, from a bike and spa tour that includes an hour-long massage, to Bike & Bites, a 3.5-hour long tour of Ottawa’s most delicious spots.

ottawa tourism coupons

On the Mountain Coaster at Camp Fortune, you can hit speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. Supplied

For lunch, return to the ByWard Market to visit Lollo , a chic, European-inspired all-day café where you can munch on a hearty salad and fresh juice while people-watching along vibrant George Street . Then, head to Camp Fortune, about 25 minutes outside of Ottawa and into Quebec, to ride the Mountain Coaster , a gravity-fed mountain pipe coaster that zips down a 1-kilometre monorail track that winds through the forest. You’ll hit speeds of up 40km/h!

Then, back in the city, put on your thinking cap for a visit to one of the city’s three Escape Manor locations, which each offer guests their choice of themed rooms to beat, from spooky to silly. Their Diefenbunker location, which is a decommissioned Cold War-era bunker-turned-military museum, offers puzzle masters the opportunity to save Parliament Hill from a nuclear strike.

ottawa tourism coupons

Starling Restaurant and Bar, in Byward Market, has a bird-inspired cocktail list. Supplied

End your day at Starling . This recently opened restaurant features plush velvet seating, chevron wood floors and booths adorned with oversized bird cages. But diners aren’t just there for the space’s good looks. The menu features modern twists on classic dishes, including duck confit, steak frites and Cobb salad, while the cocktail menu is inventive and, of course, bird-themed. Goldfinch sour, anyone?

Day 4: Culture club

After breakfast at Oat Couture , a cafe devoted to all things oatmeal, from traditional bowls to overnight oats and baked oatmeal, immerse yourself in art at either Imagine Monet or Van Gogh 360 °. In these exhibits, artwork, archival photos and snippets of journal entries are projected on all the surfaces in the room, so that visitors feel like they’re walking through the art itself.

Continue the art experience with lunch at Drip House . Part café, part art gallery, this is the spot to score Instagram-famous Korean Corn Dogs, as well as shakshuka, breakfast bowls and your pick of baked goods, including homemade cinnamon buns.

Before heading home, unwind a little more by relaxing at Nordik Spa-Nature . With 41,500 square feet of indoor space and 80,000 square feet of outdoor space, it’s the largest spa in North America. After doing a couple rounds in the water circuit, enjoy a deep-tissue massage or one of the spa’s indulgent body treatments, which include a Himalayan salt scrub, facial or foot massage. A blissful end to a busy extended long weekend.

What is Fable?

Fable is a Canadian home goods brand that works with artisanal makers around the world to design and create products that are beautiful and built to last. Fable products are made using quality materials and conscious processes for a sustainable take on dinnerware — learn more in our interview with co-founder Joe Parenteau . Fable is a Certified B Corporation , which guarantees that its products meet high standards for social and environmental impact.

Why do we recommend Fable?

We’ve reviewed a range of Fable products , including the Dinnerware set , Glassware set , Stemware set and Flatware set . Our editor praised the products as “an excellent collection of dinner party and everyday dinnerware to elevate your at-home dining experience,” and raved about the durability of the brand’s glassware that’s 1.6x tougher than typical glassware.

If you’d rather upgrade a few things at a time instead of investing in a full dinnerware bundle , you can also opt for a set of four of your favourite cups, plates or bowls.

2024 NHL draft: First-round order, time, TV channel, top prospects and more

ottawa tourism coupons

Friday will be a homecoming for Macklin Celebrini.

Celebrini, who's expected to be selected No. 1 overall by the San Jose Sharks in Las Vegas, played for the Junior Sharks and his father, Rick, is vice president of health and performance for the nearby Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

The younger Celebrini has been the top prospect in NHL Central Scouting's rankings all season. He excelled at Boston University and received the Hobey Baker Award despite being the youngest player in college hockey.

A couple other college hockey players could go early in the first round: Michigan State defenseman Artyom Levshunov and Denver University defenseman Zeev Buium, whose team won this year's NCAA title.

What to know about this weekend's NHL draft:

What time is the 2024 NHL draft?

The 2024 NHL draft will be held Friday and Saturday at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The first round will start at 7 p.m. ET Friday and the second through seventh rounds will start at 11:30 a.m. ET Saturday.

How to watch the NHL draft

The first round will be shown Friday on ESPN and Saturday's rounds will be shown on NHL Network. The draft will be the first televised event from the Sphere.

How to live stream the NHL draft

Both days of the draft can be streamed on ESPN+.

NHL draft first-round order

  • Chicago Blackhawks
  • Anaheim Ducks
  • Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Montreal Canadiens
  • Utah Hockey Club
  • Ottawa Senators
  • Seattle Kraken
  • Calgary Flames
  • New Jersey Devils
  • San Jose Sharks (from Buffalo Sabres in swap of picks)
  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • Minnesota Wild
  • Buffalo Sabres (from Pittsburgh Penguins via Sharks. The Sharks got the pick in the  Erik Karlsson deal , and traded it to the Sabres on Thursday)
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • St. Louis Blues
  • Washington Capitals
  • Chicago Blackhawks (from New York Islanders in a swap of picks in May. Chicago gave up the 20th pick and two second-rounders for the 18th pick and a second-rounder)
  • Vegas Golden Knights
  • New York Islanders (from Tampa Bay Lightning via Chicago Blackhawks in the 2022 Brandon Hagel deal)
  • Montreal Canadiens (from Los Angeles Kings in a swap of picks. Montreal gave up the 26th pick, plus a second- and seventh-rounder to move up five spots)
  • Nashville Predators
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Colorado Avalanche
  • Boston Bruins (from Bruins via Detroit Red Wings via Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings got the Bruins' first-rounder in 2023's Tyler Bertuzzi deal. Detroit traded it to Ottawa in the  Alex DeBrincat deal  and the Senators traded it to Boston in this month's  Linus Ullmark deal )
  • Los Angeles Kings (from Winnipeg Jets via Montreal Canadiens. Montreal originally got the pick in the Sean Monahan deal and traded it and two other picks to move up five spots)
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Calgary Flames (from Vancouver Canucks in the  Elias Lindholm deal )
  • Dallas Stars
  • New York Rangers
  • Anaheim Ducks (from the Edmonton Oilers in the Adam Henrique trade)

NHL mock draft

A mock draft by the independent scouting service Red Line Report has Celebrini, Ivan Demidov, Levshunov, Cayden Lindstrom and Tij Iginla going in the top five. Full mock draft

Will there be trades on draft day?

There were none during the first round last year, though there was plenty of movement beforehand . There have been moves before this year's draft with the Sharks and Buffalo Sabres swapping first-round picks and the Ottawa Senators sending a first-rounder to the Boston Bruins in the Linus Ullmark trade .

Which draft prospects have famous relatives?

Iginla, the son of Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, has the most famous bloodline. But the sons of former NHL players Saku Koivu (Aatos), Miroslav Satan (Miro), Derek Plante (Max) and Jiri Fischer (Lukas) are also in the draft pool.

Celebrini's brother, Aiden, is a Canucks draft pick. Adam Jiricek (David), Buium (Shai) and Cole Hutson (Lane) are among those with brothers who have been drafted.
