Ultimate female travel packing list for a road trip in new england.

The following is a guest packing list by Nancy Yeomans . See all packing list posts here.

When you feel the need to hit the open road, few locations can compare with the New England states. Within just a couple of hours, you can drive from coast to mountain; from highway to am-I-the-first-person-to-drive-on-this-road?. Casual is the name of the game in all but the biggest cities, so leave your stilettos behind and bring your boots.

For a truly relaxing and unique visit, you’ll want to head to the north and eastern parts of the region. While Boston and the areas in closer proximity to NYC have their own appeal, the rest of the New England states are much more casual and laid-back – just what your ramble requires. Not to mention that parking is a breeze.

New England scenery

I’ve taken many a road trip around New England over the 25 years I’ve been living here. Throughout that time I’ve been both an under-packer and an over-packer. Here is my edited list of items to consider taking with you so that you’re prepared for anything. After all, the beauty of tripping by car is that you’re not limited by the size of your suitcase or the 3 oz. rule. This list should be suitable for a 3 or 4 day long weekend.

A word of advice: when in these parts of New England avoid any type of reference, verbal or otherwise, to our arch enemies – the New York Yankees.

Hit the road, Jackie!

  • 1 pair jeans – not too ripped up… you’ll be able to wear jeans to most any restaurant
  • 1 fleece jacket
  • 3 comfy t-shirts
  • 3 or 4 pairs Smartwool socks – if a walk in the woods beckons (visit our Keeping Warm When Traveling post for more details. Smartwool is good for warm and cool climates)
  • Coobie bra – absolutely the most comfortable bra
  • 1 scarf /wrap
  • 1 pair casual pants – you don’t have to go all khaki/preppy, any cargo pants will do fine 1 pair shorts – if you’re really clever combine pants and short with these convertible pants from Prana
  • 1 swimsuit – if it’s summer you’ll hit the beach, in the cooler weather you might happen across a hot tub
  • 1 cute skirt – choose one that can be worn with your boots
  • 1 pair walking/running shoes – try New Balance Minimus for the ultimate traveling sneaker
  • 1 pair flat boots – such as cowboy boots or suede booties
  • 1 pair flip flops – for beaching in the summer and hot tub nights
  • 1 pair flats – for walking on cobblestones or uneven sidewalks

road trip shoes

Toiletries:

  • perfume/scented lotion – nothing too heavy
  • hair oil – it tends to be dry around New England in the wintertime and this does the trick
  • hand lotion – ditto above
  • sunscreen – even though it’s cooler, the sun’s still out there
  • some hair elastics – for a ponytail or messy bun (try a headband )

Technology:

  • ipod and cord for the car – soundtrack to ‘Thelma and Louise’ optional
  • GPS – use with caution: many roads won’t be on it, and some that are won’t be passable
  • a small set of speakers – for tunes at the beach or on your picnic

It’s a short trip, so your tech gear packing list will be much shorter than normally recommended.

  • 1 pair hoop earrings – stay classic here
  • 1 chunky necklace – to dress up your t-shirts
  • small bills – for any flea market shopping you may encounter
  • swiss army knife with knife and corkscrew – for the picnic lunch you’ll have
  • GoVino wine glasses – same as above (these are stemless, flexible, shatterproof, recyclable)
  • umbrella or rain jacket – New England changes in the blink of an eye and you’ll want to stay dry
  • camera – to photograph the changing leaves, rugged coastline, covered bridges
  • string bag/small backpack – handy to have for any spontaneous hiking or walking (have a peek at these stuffable bags )
  • small cooler – for the craft beer or local cheeses that you’ll want to purchase
  • Bananagrams – great for beach entertainment or for meeting new people

How to Pack and Choose Clothing for Your New England Trip

Plus, Style Tips for Dressing Like a New Englander

new england trip packing list

New England is a four-season destination, which means that the clothing and other things you'll want to pack will vary depending upon the timing of your trip. Here are some basic suggestions to help you plan what to pack and how to dress for your trip to New England.

The Essentials You'll Need for New England

  • Pack lightweight summer clothing—shorts, T-shirts, polo shirts, sundresses—for visits between late June and early September, but be sure to bring along a pair of long pants or jeans and a jacket or sweater, especially if you're visiting areas along the coast.
  • Bathing suits, towels, and sunscreen are important for beachside or lakefront destinations or if your hotel has a swimming pool. Some New England hotels even have outdoor pools that stay open through the winter.
  • In the spring (April through late June ) and fall (mid-September through early November), temperatures can be quite cold at night even when daytime temperatures are moderate and comfortable. You'll want to dress in layers and perhaps bring along a warmer jacket or raincoat.
  • A compact umbrella is always a good idea no matter what the season. Sunglasses are also a must year-round.
  • You'll want to be prepared with a warm winter coat, scarf, waterproof boots, and gloves or mittens if you plan to visit between November and March . Ear muffs or a head wrap are also a smart item to pack if you'll be spending time outdoors in the winter. Because winter storms can be unpredictable, you'll want to be sure you have a snow scraper, windshield washer fluid, blankets and emergency supplies in your car if you are driving.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
  • Be sure to pack any prescription medications you may need, brochures with information on the sights you plan to visit, copies of hotel and other reservations confirmations, airline and other tickets, passports, credit/debit cards and/or ATM cards.
  • If you are planning a skiing vacation, you can bring your own gear along or rent equipment at the slopes.
  • Don't forget your camera, and bring along plenty of digital storage media. Photography supplies may cost you extra if you wait to buy them at your New England destination.
  • Double check that you've packed chargers for all of your electronic devices: cell phone, tablet, laptop, e-reader, camera.

Smarter Packing Tips for New England Vacationers

  • Many hotels provide hair dryers and toiletry items such as shampoo, soap and body lotion, but it is always wise to inquire ahead. B&Bs are less likely to offer these amenities.
  • You may need to supply your own linens at vacation rental accommodations ; inquire ahead.
  • If you're in danger of being in New Hampshire or Maine during "black fly season" in late spring, be sure to bring along insect repellent specially formulated to repel black flies.
  • As a rule, dress tends to be fairly preppy and conservative in New England.
  • You may be surprised by how spotty cell phone service can be in New England, particularly in rural and mountainous areas and also in the tunnels around Boston. If you'll be driving to your destination, it's always wise to print directions or bring along a map.

New England Style Advice

  • Pair a denim button-down shirt tied at the waist with either a cotton skirt or jeans for an outing to a New England farmer's market or flea market.
  • Sightseeing or shopping in Boston or one of New England's other urban destinations? Leave your highest heels behind and choose comfortable flat shoes instead.
  • Layering a scarf with your top or tossing a wrap in your bag is always a good plan, since New England's weather is notoriously unpredictable.
  • If you're visiting campuses or attending college in New England, think comfortable but conservative when you're choosing your attire.
  • Skinny jeans are in, but if you're headed to the beach—particularly up north in Maine where Atlantic waters are cold—pack pants that are easy to roll up, so you can get your feet wet without having to take a bigger plunge.
  • Follow New England fashion icons Kiel James Patrick and his wife, Sarah , on Instagram for a glimpse of the preppy look aspired to by many New Englanders.

Road trip tips & tricks

  • Service your car before you leave! Luckily my husband is on top of stuff like this and had our car fully serviced before we departed on our road trip. Your girl probably would have had a panic attack if our car broke down and we got stranded in the middle of nowhere! I think it goes without saying that having AAA coverage is never a bad idea, either.
  • Always take the scenic route! One thing that my husband did on our road trip that I really appreciated was that he planned our route so we could enjoy the beautiful views along the coastline! I mean, that’s the whole point of a road trip, right?! This also allows you to discover new places that weren’t originally planned. Those places ended up being some of our favorites from our road trip!
  • Make sure to pack a toll pass! There were a ton of tolls along our route through New England, so I would recommend getting the Uni pass . This gives you access to all toll roads and most bridges in 19 states, including most of New England.
  • Check the weather! Thank you captain obvious. This mostly applies to snow (especially if you don’t have 4WD), but it wouldn’t hurt to check the weather in general before getting on the road. I also recommend plugging your planned route into Waze (my personal favorite for road trips), as it provides real-time updates and is a little more proactive in changing up a route when problems arise.
  • Plan ahead! We had our entire road trip planned and booked before we even left. Of course, not everything went 100% as planned, but this allowed us to budget appropriately for our trip and gave us peace of mind knowing we would have a place to sleep at night.

TIP:  Have no idea how to plan a road trip? I HIGHLY recommend using Roadtrippers to plan your journey, and you can do it all right in the app ahead of time. This road trip planner will allow you to discover all the best stops along your route, and code BTR5QTP gets you $5 off!

  • Keep your gas tank filled up!  Unless you spend extra time mapping out where to stop for gas along your route, it’s always best to fill up as you see them (especially if you’re driving through the Midwest). There were stretches of our trip where we were in the middle of nowhere, so we always made sure to have at least a quarter tank of gas at all times.

TIP: Trying to put together a budget for your trip? Check out this AAA gas calculator road trip to figure out how much gas you’ll end up needing!

  • Pack a lunch!  I’m happy to admit that we only stopped for fast food a handful of times during our entire six-month road trip. We tried our best to pack food that was easy to eat in the car (like sandwiches) and ALWAYS had snacks readily available. If you’re planning on stopping to eat lunch, it wouldn’t hurt to have a picnic blanket and travel utensils set on hand, just in case.
  • Only pack the necessities!  Full disclosure, we packed absolutely TERRIBLE for our six-month road trip, haha. Below is the perfect example of what NOT to do! Just because you have the space doesn’t mean you need to fill every inch with useless things like a crock pot.

Road trip essentials for car

road trip essentials for car

car air freshener | car trash can | rooftop carrier | car vacuum | Hydro flask water bottle | sauce holder | sunglass holder | dash cam | car sun shade | back of seat car organizer | car trunk organizer | car tissue holder | window shades | road atlas | yeti cooler | first aid kit | car safety kit | wireless car charger

Even though you’re going to have your car fully serviced before departing (as recommended above, hehe), you never know what could happen, so it’s always a good idea to have a car emergency kit on hand. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a  dash cam  handy in the event of an accident. Word on the street is that your insurance company may even give you a discount for owning one.

For navigation

This  wireless car charger  was probably our most used travel essential of the entire trip! Not only was it our source for navigation, but it also kept our phones charged up at all times. The last thing you want is a dead phone when you’re on the road in the middle of nowhere (I’ve seen way too many horror movies, lol), so I cannot recommend this enough! As much as I hate to say this, it also wouldn’t hurt to have a handy dandy old-school  road atlas  on hand if you lose service.

For organization

I’m kicking myself for not buying any of these  car organizers  for our New England road trip! We had stuff EVERYWHERE in the car (including on the floor), which not only took up legroom but definitely made our trip (for me mostly) uncomfortable at times.  These  would have been so helpful!

For cleanliness

We road-tripped for six months (with our dog), so as you can imagine, our car definitely took a beating. It was so nice to have a  car vacuum cleaner  readily available to help keep things so fresh and so clean clean throughout our journey. It also doesn’t hurt to have a car air freshener plugged in, and I especially love the  Capri Blue car diffuser .

Car road trip essentials for entertainment

Car power inverter | Fujifilm camera | Uni pass | Ipad Air | Airpods Pro | Colored pencils | Coloring book | Road trips book | Mini games set | Shotgun game | 3 in 1 wireless charger | Tech case | Anker portable charger | Bluetooth speaker | Car Ipad holder | Noise cancelling headphones | Kindle | Nintendo Switch

Favorite travel gadgets

Whether I’m traveling by car or air, my AirPods Pro , my Ipad , and a portable charger are my favorite tech gear that is ALWAYS coming with me. We also bought a car power inverter for our last road trip, which was so helpful in keeping our devices charged up at all times in the car, including my laptop.

Another travel gadget I didn’t know I needed until we started road-tripping a lot was a Bluetooth speaker. It’s nice to have around if you’re hanging at the beach, hiking, biking, or doing any kind of outdoor activity. I particularly love this one from Amazon that is really travel friendly and can be clipped onto just about anything!

TIP:  If you’re going to try to do some work while you’re on the road, I recommend investing in a mobile hotspot router so you can stay connected at all times!

Fall books to read

One of my goals this year is to read more, and there’s no better place to do it then on the road! Below are a couple of books that I’m planning on reading this Fall.

TIP: Don’t like having to haul a book around and prefer to read on a kindle instead? Check this one out.

Netflix shows to download

When I travel, I also like to download all of my girly shows that Charles won’t watch on my iPad . The car is the perfect place to rot your brain with garbage TV! Some of my favorite series are The Bold Type, Younger, Virgin River, Vampire Diaries, and Legacies. There are honestly so many. I could probably go on forever, haha!

Prefer to watch a movie? Check out this list of the best road trip movies, including some of my favorites, like Dumb and Dumber, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Tommy Boy, and so much more!

Road trip games

If you’re traveling with the whole fam, road trip games are always fun to have along on the ride! I’ve linked a bunch of options in my Amazon storefront here , and you can also find a variety of fun printable road trip games on Etsy.

TIP:  Traveling with kids? Check out the best road trip essentials for kids here .

Other ways to stay entertained on the road

Some other things to do to stay entertained on the road are to listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or even stand-up comedy. You could also put together a fun Spotify playlist to listen to!

Road trip must haves for the passenger princess

road trip must haves for comfort

travel pillow | Ray Ban sunglasses | Smart Sweets | comfy socks | Advil | eye mask | LED travel mirror | Celsius | Dramamine | travel utensil set | Liquid IV | Laneige lip mask | Sanitizing wipes | Tide to go | picnic blanket | Hydro Flask water bottle | hand sanitizer | backpack

For comfort

Road trips can be super exhausting for the passenger princess, and if you want to avoid any meltdowns, I recommend making sure she (or he) is comfortable at all times.

To do that, you’re going to want to grab this  travel pillow/blanket combo from Amazon that is super travel-friendly and also includes a sleeve to attach to your luggage easily. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a few pairs of comfy socks handy in case she gets cold!

For self care

If there’s anything the passenger princess loves most, it’s self-care! Some of my favorite travel beauty essentials that I ALWAYS make sure to have in my bag for any trip include under eye gels , facial sheet masks , and a lip mask .

Additionally, I always like to have Advil and Dramamine readily available just in case, and I never leave the house without hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes .

Road trip snacks

The last thing you want on your New England Fall road trip is for the passenger princess to get hangry, so keeping the car fully stocked with all the best road trip snacks is super important. Some of my favorites include Smart Sweets (the sourmelon bites are especially tasty), Chomps beef jerky sticks, and Verb energy bars (if you need a pick-me-up).

To stay energized, Celsius (specifically sparkling orange) is my fave, and I also like to carry some Liquid IV packets in my bag to keep hydrated.

TIP: Click here to build your own Smart Sweets box and use code TRAVELMEETSSTYLE10 for 10% off your purchase!

Road trip essentials for your pet

road trip

I’m honestly surprised by how easy it was to travel with our French bulldog, Melvin, on our New England Fall road trip. He’s always been really good in the car, but we weren’t sure how he would do with long 8-hour driving days. He obviously got antsy at times, but for the most part, enjoyed looking out the window and napping to his heart’s desire.

Regardless, I tried to make our car as comfortable as possible for him and, of course, had lots of chew toys around to keep him occupied. If you’re planning on traveling with your dog, below are some dog road trip essentials that worked wonders for us on our road trip, and would definitely recommend!

Packing list for road trip

what to wear in fall

I already told you above how horribly we packed the car for our New England road trip, so it probably comes as no surprise that my suitcases were a hot mess too. In my defense, we had to pack for three different seasons, which made packing much more challenging.

If I had to do it again (which I will bc we’re planning a 2023 New England road trip!) I definitely would have brought a lot less and packed a lot more efficiently. For example, I recommend packing a small bag with your toiletries and a few outfits for shorter stops to get you by. You can leave the larger bags in the car and take them out for longer stops!

Scroll below to check out some of my road trip packing list tips and travel essentials to help keep you organized

Packing tips for a road trip

  • You don’t need to pack everything you own! It’s called a washing machine people, and most hotels & Airbnb’s have them. I’ll be the first to admit that I packed way too much for our road trip and didn’t wear even half of what I packed! Comfort is key when traveling (especially on the road), and I ended up re-wearing a lot of the same things.
  • Pack outfits that you can mix and match! This is something I definitely need to be better at when I’m packing. I like to shoot a lot of content when I travel (which means lots of outfits), but it’s just silly to pack that much. You can easily recreate a new outfit by pairing it with something different and switching up accessories. Check out some of my how-to posts here .
  • Utilize packing organization products! Packing organization products has been a game changer for me, especially if you’re living out of a suitcase. Before I discovered packing cubes, my bag always used to look like a tornado had gone through it. I like to think of them as almost like dresser drawers you would have at home, so as you can imagine, it’s a lot easier to find what you’re looking for! See below for all of my favorite travel essentials.
  • Layers are key! If you have to pack for multiple seasons like I did on our road trip, I would recommend bringing lots of layers. The weather can fluctuate by day, and it’s a lot easier to put on/peel off layers than to be stuck in an uncomfortable outfit all day. Packing layers rather than bulky items that take up a lot of space in your suitcase is also a lot more efficient.

Packing essentials to stay organized

If you guys have been following me for a little bit, then you know how much I love packing cubes! They truly have been such a game changer for me, and I can’t recommend them enough. Check out this post here for everything you need to know about packing cubes and why you need them in your life!

I’ve also included some of my other favorite travel accessories below that make packing so much more efficient (and enjoyable) and have really helped me to stay organized throughout my entire trip.

How to Pack for Your Fall Trip to New England

How to Pack for Your Fall Trip to New England

what to pack to New England

A trip to New England in September or October is a magical experience as trees in the region transform into a dazzling mosaic of colors. There is plenty to see and do on a tour of New England during fall, with many activities focused on the harvest and foliage.

New England Fall Weather

What to pack for trips during early fall can be tricky because temperatures may fluctuate from warm one day to chilly the next. The average New England fall temperatures may be anywhere between the 30s to the 60s, with crisp air. Monitor the weather before you pack to ensure you have everything you need to dress like a New Englander!

What to Pack For Trips To New England

We’ve put together a list of 10 items to pack for your guided tour with YMT Vacations to get the most out of your New England getaway.

Must-Have Apparel for New England

Your Fall exploration of New England won’t be complete without considering these options.

1) Tops and Base Layers

Start with the basics such as simple tee shirts, light blouses, and tunic tops. These will be core items to mix and match with your bottoms for the duration of your vacation. Add several base layers, which can be worn in a range of weather conditions. If the forecast predicts an extreme dip in temperatures, pack one or two full sweaters that can be worn over your base layer for added warmth.

2) Comfortable Bottoms

Jeans and khakis are great options for both men and women, depending on your personal preference. A worn-in pair of jeans can be matched with any one of your tops. Khaki’s allow for plenty of airflow, especially during walks. Women may also consider leggings and yoga pants if those options are more appealing.

3) Waterproof Boots or Sneakers

A leaf-peeping tour in New England can mean an active level of walking. Even a tour that includes visiting historic landmarks will require some time spent on your feet. Invest in a pair of waterproof shoes, whether sneakers or boots, that allow your feet to remain comfortable and cushioned. Purchase the shoes at least a few weeks before your trip to break them in properly.

4) Seasonal Accessories

Think about items you may need to put on or take off in changing weather. Hats, scarves, gloves, and sunglasses are accessories that may be needed at one point or another. These items are typically light and compact enough to fit whether you are checking luggage or just packing a carry-on .

Be Prepared For Any Situation

Packing smart isn’t just about the clothes you bring. Here are some important things to consider when vacationing. Read about: Travel packing tips .

5) Umbrella or Rain Jacket

What to pack for a fall weekend getaway to New England includes a travel-sized umbrella.  It will take up very little space in your luggage, but keep you dry during sudden downpours. You can easily tuck it into the side pocket of your backpack or inside your purse. A rain jacket with a hood is also a good option if you prefer being hands-free.

6) Bug Repellent and Itching Ointment

While mosquito and tick activity drops off throughout autumn, it’s better to have repellent, just in case. Similarly, be prepared to combat itching from allergies or bites with a soothing ointment. Calamine lotions containing hydrocortisone or agents like lidocaine will help reduce your discomfort. A paste of baking soda and water may also be applied topically to help diminish the itching.

Travel Accessories to Bring in the Fall

fall foliage in New England

Looking to take high-quality images of the fall foliage in New England ? Bring a trusted camera. Cellphone cameras are great for selfies and quick shots to send to your family back home, but may not display the best quality when printed. Here are tips on what to look for when purchasing a camera for your travels.

Explore: Land tours in Alaska

8) Binoculars

New England’s wildlife is active in the fall. From migrating hawks to deer and moose on the move, pack your binoculars to get a closer look. If you don’t come across wildlife during your guided tour, binoculars will still come in handy to give you a closer leaf-peeping experience.

Some of the best experiences during any travels include interacting with locals. You may come across interesting folks in New England when shopping for mementos at local boutiques. While some establishments may take credit cards, others will not. Be prepared to pay cash for unique finds along the way.

10) Prescription Medication

Triple-check your hand luggage to make sure you have packed all the required medication you will need during your vacation. Be sure to fill your prescriptions fully before departing for your trip to avoid running out. You might even want to bring extra as backup in case your return flight is delayed for any reason. Forgetting medicine can ruin the best vacation.

New England Fall Road Trip: What I Packed for My Road Trip in October

new england trip packing list

Before I set out on my solo New England road trip, I did a lot of planning and research. I found it especially important to plan and research everything, because I was traveling in October. In North America, the fall can be filled with some warm (even hot) days and cold days. Plus, I knew I’d have to drive through different areas with varying distances and remoteness.

With that in mind, I knew I had to pack the right items to ensure I had a smooth and safe trip. What I did to make sure I packed everything I needed was to make an organized list. Everything was categorized and accounted for. When it was time to depart, I knew I had everything on hand.

If you’re thinking about doing a road trip through New England in October (to see some awesome fall foliage, of course!), you need to pack the right items. This list I created for my trip can serve as a guide to help you with your road trip as well. Here’s what I packed for a 7 day solo New England road trip :

new england trip packing list

For clothing, I knew I had to pack multiple layers for the fall weather. I had to be prepared for cooler temperatures for any type of activity I was doing that day. So, I packed:

  • 2 sports bras (I planned to do a lot of hiking so I thought these were necessary)
  • 7 tops (I had a specific outfit for my drive going to MA and driving back to PA – that cut down on the clothes I brought with me)
  • 7 bottoms (same reason as the last point)
  • 2 pairs of socks (I have Merino wool hiking socks so they last a bit longer than traditional socks)
  • 1 pair of pajamas
  • down jacket
  • 2 thermal crop tops
  • 1 rain jacket

I also had spare clothes and blankets in my car just in case anything happened. Overall, I was very pleased with my selection of clothing and I used all of them at some point.

new england trip packing list

Since I planned on staying in hotels for my trip, I packed quite a few toiletries for myself. I bought a new toiletries bag specifically for this trip. It can hold more items in one bag instead of having to bring two toiletries bag. It’s one of those bags that folds out into 4 sections, each section is clear and zipped, and it has a hook so you can hook it anywhere.

I highly recommend this BAGSMART Toiletries Bag from Amazon! The items I stored in this awesome bag were:

  • wet brush (specifically for brushing your hair when it’s wet)
  • shampoo/conditioner bars
  • leave-in conditioner
  • in-shower body lotion (you could use regular lotion – as long as your skin is hydrated!)
  • feminine cleanser (optional but I love the individual ones – they’re perfect for freshening up after long hikes)
  • moisturizer
  • tooth paste
  • tooth brush
  • bar of soap

If you need to add more items or take them away, the option is always there. But this (except for a few optional items) is a pretty good idea of what you should expect to pack for your road trip.

new england trip packing list

Electronics

You can’t go to New England and not take any pictures or footage! A simple camera would suffice. However, since I’m a travel blogger and vlogger, I’m very extra and I bring more electronic items than the average person. If you’re packing for a New England road trip in October, then you can expect to bring:

  • iPad/laptop (it’s important to back up your footage/pictures from the day. I typically just bring my iPad as that’s good enough to use to back up my files)
  • iPad charger
  • apple watch (or any watch – I like to track my calories and any type of exercise, such as hiking)
  • apple watch charger
  • cameras (I brought along my Lumix GH5 AND Sony RX100 VII – I told you, I’m extra)
  • camera chargers
  • DJI Pocket II (just another camera but it’s a very tiny and compact one)
  • DJI Pocket II charger
  • GoPro Hero 9(you never know when or if it’s going to rain)
  • GoPro charger
  • phone charger
  • adapter (for my iPad and SD cards)
  • electronics organizer (this is how I stored all my cables and extra SD cards)

This looks like so much equipment and it is. However, I got some amazing footage and pictures from my cameras. Highly recommend packing one of your cameras with you, if you have one. You don’t want to miss out on capturing the fall foliage in New England! If you don’t have a mirrorless/DSLR camera, then the camera on your phone will do.

Miscellaneous

Everything else that didn’t quite fit into a category was grouped into the miscellaneous section. These are items that I still like to pack when I’m traveling and a road trip through New England, in October, is no different. For this section, I packed:

  • makeup (for those times I just walked around and didn’t hike)
  • face halo (I took my makeup off with this pad)
  • traditional first aid kit
  • medicine aid kit
  • travel pouch (this is where I keep items I want easily accessible and close to me i.e. tide pen, hand sanitizer, band-aids, tampons, body mist, hand moisturizer, etc)
  • bug repellant
  • laundry bag
  • hiking backpack (if you plan to do some hiking, I recommend bringing a good quality hiking backpack)
  • hiking boots
  • microfiber towel
  • Paracord survival bracelet (I put this on when I’m hiking)
  • water bottle
  • mini backpack (I used this as a purse of sorts with my wallet, travel pouch, etc.)

new england trip packing list

Car Essentials

When you take a road trip, no matter how long or short it is, you should have the following essentials in your car:

  • extra food/snacks
  • extra water
  • clothing (tops, bottoms, underwear, socks, hoodies, etc.)
  • portable jump starter/traditional jump starter
  • tire pressure gauge
  • extra USB cables (to always have your phone/electronic device(s) charged)
  • spare cash and coins
  • map of the area you’re visiting

You can add anything else you need that is specific to you, your needs, your car, and your trip. I also have a whole blog post on some tips for taking a road trip , so you can get more information on this type of travel.

Overall, the items I packed for my trip were essential (most of them) and were used throughout the duration of the trip. If you’re planning on visiting New England in October to see the fall foliage, and need help with what to pack, then this list should do the trick. This list can be modified to fit you and your needs, and trip but the general basics of what you should pack are right here.

Such a great list! I would love to do a solo road trip one day and New England is definitely on my list!

It’s so worth it, I hope you get to do it in the future!

Woow what a list! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m taking down some notes 🥳

Thank you for reading!

Helpful reminder list for those who may forget things. I’ve done that many a time and thought how did I forget to pack such an obvious thing>. I must admit I an an absolute minimalist when it comes to packing. I prefer hand luggage only even on 2 week trips. I thus have a miniscule toiletries list of essentials as I depend on shmpoo etc from the hotel. I re-wash items as I go to save on carrying laundry around I hated taking stuff with me that I may need, taking up space and then never using it, so I cut down enormously. However, with a suitcase in tow you can splurge on more items so I see why your list is longer than mine.. .

Thank you! And yes, I love the minimalist approach for travel as well. It gets a bit hard to be like that when you’re doing a road trip and can just pile lots of things into your car lol.

Great list! Seems like you really thought of everything with this – I’ve always wanted to do a fall road trip to New England.

Thank you! I tried my best to think ahead and plan out everything lol. There’s nothing like a New England road trip!

Just hit the road 😎 and have fun.

I’m impressed at your list, when I do a road trip I end up bringing half my house because ‘well, it’s just going in the car’. Last time I brought a weighted blanket! Granted I wasn’t carrying that on hikes

Thank you! It’s hard trying to limit yourself when it comes to packing for a road trip but I managed to keep it to a minimum. A weighted blanket sounds awesome to bring along though!

OK I seriously need one of those paracord survival bracelets. What a great idea. I’m always looking for new gear ideas for my hiking and camping trips. Fall in New England would be amazing to see, a road trip sounds like a great adventure

Those paracord bracelets are the awesome, I don’t go camping without it! A New England gal road trip is definitely a must!

Great list! Love New England and being ready for a trip with all the essentials is crucial!

Thank you! It’s always important to be prepared for a trip

For road trips, I tend to pack a little more than when flying. Perhaps its the extra space in the truck that allows me to take more than what I need. Plus, over the years, I’ve become a smart packer thinking about how I can repurpose outfits to change up my look while wearing the same tops and bottoms. But when you’re doing activities like hiking you would have to bring clothes specific to that.

This is such a comprehensive list and I agree with you, packing for a road trip needs a good preparation and planning. Isn’t it insane with how much you end up taking? The blankets in the car is a great shout and an extra old-skool map in cae you don’t have phone reception.

How to Pack for a New England Road Trip

new england trip packing list

Here editor Tiana Attride shares her packing list for a weeklong adventure through New England .

The thing I love most about New England is its relative gloominess compared to the rest of the East Coast: cold, rocky beaches, vast pine forests, quiet, Sarah Dessen-esque seaside towns . (I also love the seafood , and the fact that you don’t feel guilty eating it for every meal when you’re here.)

Meanwhile, the thing I love most about road trips is the amount of agency you have behind the wheel. Sure, I’m talking about the ability to stop whenever you like, making it easier to explore the aforementioned nature, small towns, and seafood shacks at your leisure. But I’m also talking about the ability to pack whatever you want, so long as you can fit it into the trunk of your car.

a woman with a suitcase sitting on a bed

Since we’re scaling down on air travel for a while, it’s nice to hit the road with the opportunity to focus on packing the little things I might otherwise leave behind, whether that’s a pair of too-chunky sandals, an extra hoodie, or more than 3.4 ounces of face wash.

3 New England seaside towns that are fun all year round   →

an open umbrella

1. M&Co Sky Umbrella

This trip was all about seeing the sunrise, but it certainly wasn’t sunny all the way through! My charming little friend here adds a little sunshine to the cloudiest of days.

2. A legion of black hoodies

Minimalism is controversial, but I pride myself on my all-black-and-white wardrobe. Fewer colors to coordinate = less time spent putting together looks = more time spent exploring! In other words, I’m justifying my ever-growing collection of black hoodies, which go with me everywhere (yes, even in summertime).

To stay warm on chilly Northeastern beaches, I brought along my two current favorites: this super-soft one from We’re Not Really Strangers   and another from ChilledCow (lo-fi hip hop beats forever).

The ultimate beginner’s guide to planning a road trip →

a camera and film

3. Canon AE-1 film camera

Because no amount of digital editing will ever give you the excellent grain and haze a film camera can bring you naturally. The AE-1 is an older model, but they’re still pretty common and easy to find used on eBay or at local thrift stores. I’ve gone through about a million rolls of Kodak 35mm film this summer alone.

4. Doc Martens

I’m a long-time Docs devotee. For the colder months, my Jadon Max boots reign supreme; for summer, my Blair gladiator sandals go with me always.

5. Nike Orive running shoes

My Docs are stylish—but for days out hiking, camping, or being generally high-activity, my cushiony Nike sneakers are the go-to.

The founder of Camping Noire shares her best tips for first-time hikers →

fash wash, serum, and hair spray

6. Cera-Ve hydrating facial cleanser

My skin is as dry as the Sahara, and for some reason, travel always exacerbates that. This cleanser has helped me save face countless times and keeps my face baby soft.

7. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid serum

Diddo for hyaluronic acid. Wildly effective and inexpensive.

8. Göt2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray

Because my wigs don’t secure themselves.

a hat and sunglasses

9. Silk or satin pillowcase

My wigs also don’t protect themselves from damage! No matter what type you have (or where you’re sleeping, whether that be in a bed or a tent), a silk or satin pillowcase will be much kinder to your hair and skin. Try it now, thank me later.

10. Classic Yankees cap

Whenever I wear this hat with my Quay sunglasse s , I feel less like I’m having a bad hair day and more like a fashionable celebrity trying to act low-key .

11. Pseudo Labs Phreckles

I’m obsessed with freckles, and I recently discovered these faux freckles that have helped me live my dream. Just because I’m wearing a mask in public doesn’t mean I can’t feel cute underneath it (or take selfies before I leave the house)!

12. Reusable anime face masks

I liked these even before the pandemic hit, and in 2020, fun happened to meet utility.

What to Pack to Travel

You won't need any exotic gear for New England, but you do have some packing decisions to make.

Windjammer "American Eagle," Rockport ME

Dress & Fashion

You'll want at least one fairly nice outfit of the dress or jacket-and-tie variety for special evenings in fancy restaurants. Few establishments enforce a strict dress code anymore, but you should be prepared nonetheless.

Newport RI has numerous restaurants requiring jacket-and-tie/dress, and the Ritz-Carlton in Boston also enforces the dress code.

Rain can come at any time of year. A small umbrella is minimal rain gear in summer; in other seasons a raincoat is necessary as well.

Summer days can get very hot and muggy, so cool cotton clothing is best, but have a sweater or jacket for cool evenings, cruises, and whale-watching expeditions .

In spring and autumn moderately warm clothing, including sweater and windbreaker, is essential.

In winter , be prepared for freezing weather and snow. Full woolens and foul weather gear are required.

Other Items

If you take prescription medicines regularly, bring a supply of the medicine, not a prescription for it.

Doctors are licensed by state , and their prescriptions are not accepted in any state except the one in which they are licensed. In other words, a prescription from a California doctor will not be accepted in Connecticut.

Other handy items might include a pair of binoculars and a flashlight .

There are two campgrounds in the Mount Desert area of Acadia: Blackwoods and Seawall. They require reservations in advance and are usually open through mid-October.

White Mountains, NH

White Mountains in the Fall

The White Mountains may have some of the best fall foliage in the entire country! 🍂These sprawling mountains cover over a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and getting to see them in the autumn is spectacular.

You could spend a full week in the White Mountains , but I recommend having at least two days if you can. On the first day, you can explore the East side of the White Mountains. Take the stunning Conway Scenic Railway and take the Railway up to Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast.

Then, on your second take you can drive the Kancamagus Highway, which is full of orange and yellow trees in the fall. Before heading to Franconia Notch State Park and seeing the iconic Artist Bluff viewpoint. 📸

Choosing where to stay in the White Mountains may be one of the hardest decisions you need to make on this New England fall road trip. There are a number of towns you can choose to stay in, so you may want to choose based on where you want to spend the most time.

Some of the best towns to stay in are Littleton, North Conway, Jackson, Sugar Hill, Woodstock or Lincoln.

If you are a camper or van lifer, there are plenty of free camping areas in the White Mountains, so you can move more easily through them.

Hotels in the White Mountains:

Stowe with all the fall colors covering the mountains

Stowe is well known as being a fantastic skiing destination, but it’s also a wonderful place to venture to in the months of September and October. Mount Mansfield sits above this charming Northeastern town with colors covering the area and tall church steeples. It’s like something out of a story book.

It’s so easy to find things to do in Stowe when you visit. First, venture out to the surrounding areas to try the delicious fall treats of apple cider donuts and hot apple cider 🍎. Then, take a day to either hike up or drive up to the peak of Mount Mansfield. It’s a fantastic year round destination.

Woodstock, VT

Farm near Woodstock

Woodstock is the epitome of small New England towns in the fall. Adorable shops, covered bridges, rolling hills, and historic mansions. It’s one of those places that you will not want to miss on your journey to New England!

I recommend spending a day or two in this adorable town. It’s one of the best places to see the foliage either on the mountainside or by going on a drive through the surrounding mountains. You’ll truly be endeared by this incredible autumn destination.

Note: The road to Sleepy Hollow Farm and other private roads are closed during the fall. 🚫

Where to Stay in Woodstock

Woodstock is an adorable small town, which means most things are very close together. The Woodstock Inn & Resort is probably the most famous place to stay and it’s right along the main strip, so it’s very walkable. But, there are many cute spots to choose from. 🤗

  • Woodstock Inn & Resort
  • The Village Inn of Woodstock

Planning Your New England Road Trip

Where to Start Your Road Trip

Van in the Fall

If you are flying in from other parts of the country, then I recommend the Boston or Portland airports . Boston has a larger airport with more flight options, so they may be cheaper, but the drives will be slightly longer. From there, you will definitely want a rental car to get around. 🚗

I recommend flying into Boston or Portland, Maine! ✈️

For those who are from the East Coast, you can make this drive into a one way route. Plus, you may be able to add more destinations along your drive as well. We came up from DC and stopped in New Haven and Oguinquit on our way North, which were both so charming!

When is Peak Fall Foliage?

new england trip packing list

Fall foliage predictions change every year and depend a lot on various factors. However, that being said it usually peaks in New England from the last week of September until somewhere in mid-October.

This trip is best from late September to mid-October!

All of the trips that we took were in the first couple weeks of October . During our adventures we were a little ahead of the peak in some destinations, while others were perfectly timed! You can look at updates fall foliage predictions here!

Why You Should Visit New England in the Fall

Fall foliage in new england

I think that New England is the quintessential place to experience the fall. It has everything you could possibly want from mountain landscapes covered in foliage, hot fresh apple cider, and adorable small towns.

New England really gives off Gilmore Girls vibes and there’s nothing better than that!

There’s something that is so cozy about wandering through these small towns with a warm sweater on and the crisp chill in the air. 💨 You’ll be amazed at all of the beauty and charm that New England has and you’ll want to spend every single fall there!

Places You Could Add With More Time

new england trip packing list

If you have more time to explore, then there are so many other great destinations you could add to your road trip. Honestly, you could spend every fall visiting a new destination in New England, because there are so many great places to see, but here are a few ideas.

Spend more time in Massachusetts and add the town of Salem or the beautiful area of the Berkshires to your trip. Salem is a very popular spot in the Fall, because it was home to the Salem witch trails, which makes it a spooky spot to visit. 👻 While, the Berkshires have incredible vistas.

Travelers that are flying into Boston or driving up from the South can add the beautiful state of Rhode Island to their trip. Newport is one of my favorite places on the East Coast and it’s definitely worth seeing. While, Providence is a lovely city with great food as well.

New England Fall Packing Guide

two people hugging on Mount Mansfield

Weather can be all over the place in the Fall, so make sure to pack plenty of layers . Now, many days can be gorgeous and sunny, while others can be bitterly cold or rainy. I expect that you’ll visit a bunch of different weather types on your trip.

On all of my trips up to New England, I always pack a warm jacket, a rain coat, and a cute flannel or sweater. It’s a great time to show off your fun Fall fits! If you want to get outdoors or hike, then you will also want to bring good durable hiking layers.

Packing List

  • Comfortable Hiking Boots
  • Blundstones or Boots
  • Hiking Poles (if you plan on hiking)
  • Warm Knit Sweater
  • Hiking Pants (if hiking)
  • Rain jacket
  • Light winter jacket

Final Tips for Your New England Fall Road Trip

Fall foliage from the sky

Honestly, I think the best tip for taking a road trip in the Fall is to be flexible with your itinerary. Even if you can’t change your hotel bookings, at least leaving the days open for different things. Some days may be beautiful where you want to do a bunch of things, while others can be cold and rainy. 🌧 So, just be open to possibilities and you’ll have a fantastic time!

Things to do

The ultimate 10-day new england road trip itinerary.

Essential New England Road Trip Info

Comprising six states – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont -there’s a lot of ground to cover during a New England driving tour. It’s not a small amount of driving, despite how close together many of these states are. So if you’re planning to embark on this road trip, keep this in mind.

You can either fly into a set starting point – we recommend Boston – or you can drive in from where ever you’re located in the United States. In any case, you’re going to need a car – either your own or a rental car . If you’re renting, we suggest going through Discover Cars to get the best deals from all the top car rental companies in one place.

How to Get to New England

If traveling from Europe or another destination outside the States, you’ll fly into Boston for this itinerary. Considering the region’s most popular international airport, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is where your trip will start and end.

If Boston doesn’t work for you, you can also fly into New York City , Philadelphia, or even Washington, DC. It will just take you a little longer to drive to the start point of this road trip, but there is plenty to see along the way.

Connecticut in Fall

When Should You Do on a New England Trip?

Unless you’re a winter die-hard, the best time to visit New England is undoubtedly during the fall, from September to December, or spring, from March to June.

Fall is when the landscape takes on a magical element with changing colors in every shade of gold, orange, red, and brown imaginable. Aside from that, the crisp, clear fall air and the New England sun bursting through the morning mists are second to none, making it one of the best fall destinations in the USA .

If you can’t swing a fall road trip, the second best time is during spring. This is before the heat of the summer really sets in, so temperatures will be mild and enjoyable. I would definitely not go in summer, if at all possible, because it can get really hot and humid.

Boston, Massachusetts (Day 1)

boston harbor

After arriving in Boston, Massachusetts , you can jump directly into the first day of your trip by visiting Boston. Drop off your bags at the hotel and explore Beantown (as it’s locally known).

In a city defined by a rich history and vibrant sports culture, you’ll find a million historical things to see alongside plenty of sports bars to grab a beer in at the end of your day. While there’s no way to see the best of Boston in one day, we suggest you include these highlights on your first day:

  • Walk the Freedom Trail past some of the most important sites that shaped the American Revolution
  • Explore the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museums
  • Head to the Italian cuisine-filled North End of Boston for either lunch or dinner
  • Grab a few snapshots of America’s most photographed street, Acorn Street
  • Visit the Boston Library and marvel at its exquisite architecture

Where to stay: The Newbury Boston

Salem, Massachusetts & Portland, Maine (Day 2)

salem

Your second day of this New England vacation itinerary involves the first stretch of road to tackle. Heading out north via the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway (or Route 127), you’ll drive for about 40 minutes to reach Salem.

Infamously known for being the site of the Salem witch trials of 1962, the town is a global epicenter for everything occult. If you’re visiting during October, prepare for an overload of everything spooky. No matter when you’re in town, here are some spots you shouldn’t skip:

  • The Salem Witch Museum
  • Salem Witch Trials Memorial
  • The House of the Seven Gables

When you’re done exploring spooky Salem, jump back on Route 127. After about an hour and forty minutes, you’ll reach Portland, Maine.

Similar to its west coast counterpart in Oregon , Portland, Maine, is a city with a bustling passion for the arts, the outdoors, and local microbrews and distilleries. Arriving in the city, you can leave your bags at your hotel and set out for a taste of Portland.

Some of the top things to see and do while you’re in town include:

  • Visit Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light
  • Tackle a brewery tour of Portland to some local craft breweries
  • Shop the local boutiques and specialty shops of Old Port
  • Grab a sunset view along the Eastern Promenade
  • Eat lobster rolls at Luke’s Lobster on the pier

Tours to look out for while you’re in Portland:

  • Old Port Culinary Walking Tour
  • Cusco Bay Sea Kayaking Tour
  • A Walk Through Time Tour in Portland

Where to stay: Portland Regency Hotel & Spa

Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park, Maine (Day 3)

Bar Harbor, Maine

Your third day along this New England trip requires an early start and a three-hour drive, but the rewards are totally worth it. Driving from Portland to Bar Harbor, the beach town gateway to Acadia National Park, prepare for some out-of-this-world scenery.

Along the route, you’ll pass through a few towns worth a stop. The first is Bristol, where you can spend a minute or two at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse , then stop at the Camden Hills State Park in Camden to see the view from the top of Mt. Battie.

After dropping off your belongings at your overnight spot in Bar Harbor, it’s time to head into Acadia National Park. You need a U.S. Park Pass to get in. If you’re going to be visiting more than one park in the year, you should definitely consider getting the America the Beautiful annual pass, which is just $79.99 from REI.

On Maine’s largest island, Mount Desert Island, the 47,000-acre Acadia National Park has dramatic mountains, picturesque lakes, and endless miles of hiking trails. It’s one of the biggest draws to this part of the U.S.

The top three things to add to your Acadia itinerary include:

  • Hiking to the summit of Cadillac Mountain (vehicle reservations are required for Cadillac Summit Road from May 25 through Oct 22). Book online.
  • Kayaking on Swan Lake
  • Biking or driving the Park Loop Road. The Park Loop Road can be very crowded. Have a backup plan if the area you wish to visit is full.

Where to stay: Bar Harbor Inn

White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire (Day 4)

White Mountain National Forest

While you technically did venture into stunning New Hampshire earlier in your road trip, day four is all about heading to and roaming around one of the state’s top attractions. The drive to get there is another 3 hours 30 min drive, so get up early!

Topping most driving tours of New England, especially those focused on New Hampshire, White Mountain National Forest is a beautiful collection of natural landscapes. The best thing about the National Forest is that there are many unique activities to indulge in regardless of what time of year you’re visiting.

  • In springtime, thanks to warmer weather and melting snow, the forest delivers the perfect setting for hiking and camping.
  • During the summer, you can fill your day by hiking, fishing, or canoeing.
  • When fall arrives, you should set out to drive New Hampshire’s scenic Kancamagus Highway.
  • Wintertime brings with it a lot of snow-capped mountains fit for winter sports enthusiasts at numerous ski resorts.

Where to stay: The Inn at Thornhill & Spa

Stowe, Vermont (Day 5)

Stowe

Once you’ve said farewell to New Hampshire, it’s time to head to NEK or the North-East Kingdom of Vermont. It’s a 1 hour 30 minute drive. Known for its spectacular green mountains, eye-catching lakes, and charming small farms, the state is a buzzworthy must-visit.

On the way to Stowe, you’ll stop in Waterbury for a genuine pilgrimage to the ice cream empire and the original store of Ben & Jerry’s.

Next up is a short 20-minute drive north to the ski resort town of Stowe. This world-famous ski destination showcases an authentic small-town charm, a lively main street, and some iconic steepled churches.

Be sure to check out some of Stowe’s one-of-a-kind local favorites, such as Laughing Moon Chocolates, Shaw’s General Store, and The Deep End (the hippest pizza place in the state). Other options here include:

  • Skiing at the Trapp Family Lodge
  • Hiking in Green Mountain National Forest
  • Heading on a scenic drive on Mountain Road

Where to stay: The Lodge at Spruce Peak

Litchfield & Mystic, Connecticut (Day 6)

Mystic Seaport Connecticut

Another early start on day six, you’ll drive down the Route 100 Scenic Byway, Vermont’s longest highway, through Wilmington, across the border into Connecticut. First stop of the day? Litchfield; a charming New England town brimming with local history. It’s a 4-hour drive to get there.

Founded in 1719, today, the town is a popular tourist destination known for its antique shops, numerous art galleries, and historic homes.

Delving further into Connecticut, you’ll head east to the town of Mystic. This historic seaport sits snuggly on the Mystic River and is most famous for its maritime heritage and the setting of the 1988 film Mystic Pizza .

Here are some highlights in Mystic:

  • Visit the Mystic Seaport Museum , one of the largest in the world
  • Explore early colonial farm life at the Denison Homestead
  • Dive into some aquatic adventures at the Mystic Aquarium
  • Hike a trail or two in Bluff Point State Park

Where to stay: Hilton Mystic

Newport, Rhode Island (Day 7)

newport coast

Continuing the coastal New England road trip, the next stop along your journey is in Rhode Island. Although it’s the smallest state in the US, it is home to some of the country’s most historic towns, most notably Newport. This is only an hour drive.

This seaside town, once a summer retreat for America’s most wealthy families, boasts breathtakingly stunning mansions built during the Gilded Age and is quite the sight to behold. Beyond that, you’ll find pristine beaches and some of the best seafood in the country here.

When you’re planning your day in Newport, be sure to include these must-do activities:

  • Stroll along Cliff Walk, a coastal 3.5-mile pathway hugging the Atlantic Ocean
  • Indulge in some retail therapy along Bellevue Avenue and Thames Street
  • Head out wine tasting at Greenvale Vineyards
  • Tour the famous Newport Mansions
  • Explore Bowen’s Wharf or take a boat cruise from Long Wharf
  • Relax on the sands of Easton Beach

Where to stay: Newport Marriott

Cape Cod (Day 8)

cape cod

Next up, and after an entire week on the road, it’s time for some rest and relaxation on the flexed arm of Massachusetts, in Cape Cod, a 1-hour 30-minute drive. Sitting on a peninsula in the state’s southeastern region, Cape Cod has long been a summer destination for the rich and famous.

Now if you’ve ever wondered why New England beach vacations are so popular, the almost 560 miles of coastline that encircle Cape Cod provide a clear answer. Yes, there are many great towns here worthy of a stay, but for this road trip, you’ll spend the day and night in Sandwich.

The official oldest English settlement in Cape Cod, Sandwich, dates back to 1639 and stuns with calm beachfront, quaint eateries, and a vibrant historic district. Fill your day in Sandwich with some of these standouts:

  • Breakfast at Cafe Riverview
  • Stroll along East Sandwich Beach
  • Visit Sandwich Boardwalk
  • Explore the Sandwich Historic District
  • Indulge in the best lobster in town at Mattakeese Wharf

Where to stay: Sandwich Lodge & Resort

Plymouth, Massachusetts (Day 9)

Plymouth Massachusetts

What would an itinerary for a New England road trip be without a stop in Plymouth? That’s why your second-to-last day in the area is all about exploring the town that dates back to 1620. It’s a 30-minute drive from Cape Cod.

Today this quintessential New England town is most known as the site where the very first Thanksgiving took place and is home to Plymouth Rock. Steeped in history, this is where the Pilgrims first landed way back when.

With all that history, here are a few top spots you should visit while in Plymouth:

  • Explore Plimoth Patuxent , a living history museum with a replica of the Mayflower ship
  • Grab a few snapshots at Plymouth Rock and delve into the Pilgrim Hall Museum
  • Roam around Plymouth’s historic downtown harbor area, home to several notable buildings such as the Plymouth Courthouse
  • Cap off your day with a stroll along Plymouth’s famously historic waterfront and catch the sunset over Cape Cod

Where to stay: Thomas Sea Suites at Harbourtown

Boston, Massachusetts (Day 10)

Boston harbor

Finally ending your epic 10-day New England road trip, you’re back in Boston . Luckily the drive from Plymouth to Boston is only 45 minutes to an hour, so you can start the day a bit later and still be back in Beantown with some time to spare for any extra activities.

We’d recommend fitting anything you didn’t have time for on day one into your final day. If you’ve got a few extra hours, here are some other Boston highlights to add:

  • For history lovers, pay a visit to the USS Constitution Museum or the Paul Revere House
  • Art lovers should definitely head to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts
  • Sports fanatics should take a one-hour tour of Fenway Park or catch a Boston Red Sox game ( check their calendar here )
  • For food lovers, be sure to check out our foodie guide to Boston .

Where to stay: Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall Boston

The Ultimate Guide On What To Pack For Cape Cod + Outfit Ideas (2024)

After years of traveling to Cape Cod, I’ve really perfected and streamlined my packing routine. I remember packing for our first week-long stay in a vacation rental, and I felt so overwhelmed. Not only by what to wear to make sure I was comfortable for the week, but with also trying to decide what was worth bringing for our rental. If you’re also feeling overwhelmed, and are wondering what to pack for Cape Cod, I’ve got you covered in this post!

This post will also include all my favorite beach accessories that you may find helpful, and my favorite things that have made our Cape Cod vacations much easier over the years. I’ve also included some outfit ideas, which may help you when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

When deciding what to pack for Cape Cod, it's a good idea to consider a sun hat that you can use both at the beach, and out for the day, as well as plenty of sunscreen and good beach towels.

What To Pack For One Week On Cape Cod In The Summer

For a trip in the summer on Cape Cod, here is my personal master packing list I’ve developed over the years. You’ll want to consider some of these when thinking of what to pack for Cape Cod, but for shorter stays, not all of these will be necessary, so be sure to tailor everything to your liking. Vacation rental items and a breakdown of clothing will be covered in separate sections below!

  • Clothing – see a breakdown and outfit inspiration below!
  • Medications, including general pain relievers just in case.
  • Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, contact solution, razor, etc. Shower gel and shampoo will be provided at hotels, but may not be included at a rental.
  • Tampons or pads if you expect your period.
  • 2-5 swimsuits, depending on how often you plan to swim. I go in the ocean almost every day during summer trips (I sometimes also go for evening swims), and usually pack around 5.
  • 1-2 swim cover ups.
  • Beach accessories (see section below for a breakdown!).
  • Hair dryer (a hotel will likely have this, but a vacation rental may not).
  • Make-up and skincare.
  • Hand cleansing wipes (I keep a pack in our beach bag, and in my purse to wipe our hands after we apply sunscreen)
  • Aloe vera for sunburns.
  • Bug spray for the beach or nature walks (the beach can sometimes get those annoying beach flies that bite).
  • Band-Aids for blisters or any small cuts (I’ve gotten thrown in strong waves and cut myself a few times on the rocks).
  • Dramamine if you get seasick and are planning any boat rides or tours.
  • Wine carrier or cooler (lots of seafood shacks are BYOB, and with it being warm, chances are you’ll want a cold white wine, champagne, or beer to bring with you).
  • Insulated wine thermos and insulated drinkwear (you may not realize you need these! See why in my links below)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Things you may need for your vacation rental (see section below!).
  • Cash. Some ice cream places (including Sundae School and Schoolhouse) and seafood shacks are still cash only. You can, of course, withdrawal cash once you arrive, but we usually like to have around $50 on us when we arrive so we don’t have to worry about finding at ATM right away. Places like Eden Hand Arts are also cash only.

Curious about Eden Hand Arts? It’s the only place to buy an Authentic Cape Cod Bracelet! Click here to read all about it in my Eden Hand Arts Post.

Helpful Links To Things I Love

East Coast-Style Swimsuit

I have a lot of swimsuits, but one of my favorites is this blue and white striped one from Amazon, believe it or not. It has the perfect East Coast vibe, is a bit different than a standard swimsuit and is really affordable. I ordered the Blue color, and it’s a really pretty royal blue that also pulls slightly teal. It also comes in a few other colors, including a navy (which I’m tempted to buy every year). This is always on my list when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

This striped swimsuit from Amazon is one of my favorites, and is always on my list when I'm deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

Click here to buy this blue and white striped swimsuit!

Insulated Wine Thermos and Drinkware

Did you know that glass is prohibited on most Cape Cod beaches? So, if you’re looking to do a little sunset picnic with wine or champagne, you’ll want to be sure you have something to decant your wine into. I really love this set, which comes with the wine thermos, and two cups, all of which are insulated and keep our white wine and champagne nice and cold (better than a cooler with ice packs).

Glass isn't allowed on most beaches on the Cape, so this insulated wine thermos is perfect for bringing wine or champagne to the beach with you.

Lots of seafood shacks are also BYOB, and allow you to bring alcoholic beverages at no charge, or for a small corkage fee. Sesuit Harbor Cafe is one of them (and also, my favorite lobster roll on the Cape). These also are perfect for keeping your wine or champagne cold for your BYOB outings, so this is something you’ll want to consider when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

We do a lot of sunset picnics at the beaches on the Cape during your visits, so this wine thermos and insulated cups are always on our list when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

Click here to buy the insulated wine thermos and drinkware set!

Wine Carrier

Since we love those sunset beach picnics so much, and also love hitting up those BYOB places, we decided to get this cute little wine carrier, and have loved it. Our beach cooler is too big for just a bottle of wine, or even a small picnic, so this is perfect for us. Plus, the wine thermos keeps does a better job at keeping our drinks cold than a cooler with ice packs. This carrier fits two bottles of wine, with a front flap that comes with a cheese board and knives.

This wine carrier is so cute, and perfect for bringing your wine thermos and insulated cups to the beach. This is always on our list when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod because we can also bring it with us to BYOB seafood shacks.

Our wine thermos also fits perfectly inside, and we use the other compartment for our insulated cups and a few extra small things (like cheese and crackers if we’re doing a picnic).

This is not insulated, so keep that in mind. That’s why we like using the wine thermos since we have it anyway for drinks on the beach.

Click here to buy this cute little wine carrier!

Reusable Water Bottle

This is really great to have whenever you travel, including when you’re planning what to pack for Cape Cod. This comes in handy for staying hydrated on beach days, when you’re out exploring all day, nature walks or hikes and on boat tours. My husband and I each have a Swell water bottle, and it’s the perfect size for traveling. They don’t take up too much space in our day packs or bags, and hold just enough to stay hydrated without drinking too much and needing a bathroom every 30 minutes.

Click here to buy your Swell reusable water bottle!

Tinted Serum With SPF

This tinted serum by Ilia with SPF 40 is a game changer, and the only foundation I bring with me when I decide what to pack for Cape Cod. I tend to have oily-combination skin in the summer, and this works perfectly. It never breaks me out, provides enough sun protection when I’m out and about in the afternoon, and it’s minimal coverage that gives me a nice, natural and fresh look without feeling heavy. It just feels like skin once applied, and I’m now on my third bottle of it, which goes to show you how much I love it.

This Ilia serum skin tint is my go-to for foundation when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

I use the shade Formosa ST4, but when trying samples of different shades, I could have gotten away with the shade below and above it because the light coverage is very forgiving. This will not cover everything on your face, but really just evens things out a bit. For evenings out, I’ll apply a little concealer around my face for extra coverage.

Osea Face Mist

After a day at the beach, this Sea Vitamin Boost Facial Mist by Osea feel so , so good. I do use this year-round, but find I especially enjoy it in the summer after being out in the sun all day. A few mists around my face, and my skin feels hydrated, glowy and brought back to life. It works really well under the Ilia Skin Tint Serum as well. I often use it right after I shower after a beach day, and right before bed.

This Sea Vitamin facial mist from Osea is an amazing after-sun mist for your face after a day at the beach.

RMS Bronzer

I’ve been using the RMS Buriti Bronzer for years in the summer season, and I’ve never wanted to buy another bronzer – ever. This always comes with me when I’m planning what to pack for Cape Cod. I love this particular one because it’s a smooth and blendable cream formula that looks incredibly natural, and the undertone is more red, which gives me the appearance of just having been sun-kissed, without the damaging effects of tanning.

The Buriti Bronzer by RMS is always on my list when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod because it's the most natural-looking bronzer I've ever found.

I place this on the tops of my cheekbones, a little on my nose and my chin (wherever the sun should naturally hit my face the most), and it provides the perfect, sun-kissed look that I love if I’m heading out to Provincetown or Chatham for the day (or on a date with my husband!).

What To Pack For Cape Cod: Beach Accessories

Depending on how much time you plan to spend at the beach, you’ll want to make sure you’ve brought everything you need to be comfortable for lounging in the sand all day. You may not need everything on this list, but if you’re like me, and spend the whole day at the beach multiple times during each trip, some of these things may be helpful when thinking about what to pack for Cape Cod.

Tip : Your hotel or vacation rental may provide some of these things, but it’s best to double check with your accommodation to see what you need. Things like beach chairs and umbrellas are common at hotels (especially if it’s near a beach, or is a higher end hotel). Vacation rentals may provide the same, in addition to coolers and ice packs. Always check with the owner if you have any questions.

  • Beach umbrella, canopy or tent
  • Beach chairs
  • Beach sandals that you can get wet
  • Beach pillow (I love these for naps at the beach, and the inflatable ones for camping are so easy to use)
  • Books (alternatively, you could support a local bookstore on the Cape, and buy a book or two!)
  • Beach bag essentials like a wide-toothed hair comb, chip clips to keep snack bags closed, extra hair ties and wipes to wipe down hands after applying sunscreen).
  • Ice packs for picnics
  • Beach blanket
  • Beach towels
  • Boogie boards or floaties (floaties are not generally permitted at the National Seashore, but most town beaches with calm water allow them. It’s always the lifeguard’s discretion, but we’re usually able to use them. Boogie boards are always allowed at all beaches).
  • Floatie inflator (definitely check this out below, it’s tiny and incredibly helpful!)

Helpful Links To My Favorite Beach Accessories

These are the specific beach accessories we use a lot and really love! Hopefully this helps you if you’re looking to buy some things to prepare for your trip.

This is what I bring with me when I travel solo to the Cape. I really wanted something sturdier than an umbrella for days when winds are a bit gusty, and I also wanted something I could easily set up and take down myself. Guys, this pop-up beach tent is awesome .

This pop-up beach tent is always on my list of what to pack for Cape Cod during my solo trips because it's so easy to put up and take down.

The style I purchased is no longer available, but they have a newer version for the same price. If you need a beach shelter that’s super easy to put up, I can’t recommend this enough. It takes me less than five minutes, and packs up into an easy-to-carry bag, too. The past few years on the Cape, I’ve seen more and more solo travelers using these pop-up tents, so I’m not the only one who seems to like them!

Click here to buy your pop-up beach tent!

Beach Cabana

A newer addition to our beach accessories is this Cool Cabana beach tent, and my husband and I love this thing. This gives us a bit more room under the shade than the pop-up tent, and is completely open. I use this when my husband and I travel together because even though it’s marketed as easy to set-up with one person, I actually have a hard time doing it on my own just because of the larger size. So we use this when we go to the beach together.

This beach canopy by Cool Cabanas is really great if you prefer a more open beach set-up.

We decided on the Medium size, which is perfect for two people. Online, it says the Medium will fit four people, but I think that would be a stretch. I would recommend the Large size for more than two people, for sure. You can kind of tell in the picture above how four people would be a stretch.

With two people, this is very easy to set-up, and it takes less than 5 minutes. It’s basically a giant umbrella that’s anchored by four sides that you put sand into to hold them down. We’ve tested this is winds up to 15-17 MPH, and it does very well. Winds stronger than that may be tough, though. Overall, even though it was a bit more expensive than the pop-up tent, we love this thing.

You obviously don’t need both the tent and canopy, so definitely decide which works best for you and your plans! These also come in different colors and patterns. There seems to be a lot of generic ones available on Amazon, and I can’t speak to the quality of those, as we got the original one by Cool Cabana, so be sure to check the brand before purchasing.

Beach Pillow

I love taking naps at the beach if we’re there all day – it’s inevitable that the sound of the waves will lull me to sleep. Once I got these inexpensive beach pillows, I was so comfortable. And after one trip to the beach where I used this a ton, my husband ordered one immediately for himself, so this is always on our list of what to pack for Cape Cod. They roll up into nothing, are waterproof and take up no space in our beach bag. I really love these.

This blow-up camping pillow is perfect for laying down at the beach, and it folds up into a size that fits into the palm of your hand. This is always on our list of what to pack for Cape Cod.

Click here to order your inflatable beach pillow!

I actually have quite a selection of beach bags that I’ve collected over the years, and you’ll see me using different ones in different photos. But my favorite is actually this inexpensive one from Amazon. It’s sturdy, washable, and comes in a few different colors and patterns, and I love the nautical rope handle.

This simple beach bag is super affordable from Amazon, and I've been using it for years.

Click here to buy this blue and white striped beach bag!

I was so hesitant to spend $60 on a sunhat, but I had my eye on this for a long time. When I finally pulled the trigger, I was so happy I did. I love this hat because it’s perfect to wear at the beach, and an afternoon out, and works with pretty much any outfit. It’s also perfectly and classically New England.

Inside, it has a size adjuster that you control with two strings so it will fit most head sizes, and those ties double as a way to secure your hat to a bag (which is what I do all the time). It also comes in different color options for the bow. You’ve seen this hat is so many of my photos, so that’s a testament to how much I love and recommend it.

Beach Towels

I’ve accumulated quite a few beach towels over the years (some of them just because they’re cute, no judgement!). But my favorite ones, and the ones both my husband and I reach for the most, are the microfiber towels from Dock & Bay. They dry super fast, repel sand and fold up smaller than our other traditional beach towels. If you need to buy anything for your Cape Cod trip, I would recommend getting a few of these.

These microfiber towels from Dock & bay are really amazing, and always on our list when deciding what to pack for Cape Cod.

They also come in two sizes, and the XL size is perfect for getting that blanket feeling while you towel off after a swim. We have the L and the XL, but prefer the XL. These are always included on our list of what to pack for Cape Cod. They also come in nice canvas drawstring bags, which we use to keep our phones and keys and such in at the beach so we can find them easier in our bag.

The Dock & Bay towels take up way less space in your beach bag than traditional towels, and dry much faster. Definitely consider ordering some of these when making your list for what to pack for Cape Cod.

Waterproof Beach Blanket

This is another recent discovery for us, but we use it ALL the time, and love it. This beach blanket is made of a parachute-like material, and it’s completely waterproof, and shakes off sand super easily. My husband and I both like to sit in the sand when we go to the beach, but we were tired of packing extra towels, or blankets to sit on that just stayed soggy the whole day. This was the perfect solution! It also has pockets on each corner you can fill with sand to anchor it down.

If you have beach chairs, you likely won’t need this, but if you like to sit in the sand, we both love it. We do use this in conjunction with our beach tent or canopy.

Boogie Boards

For days we go to a beach with bigger waves, we bring our boogie boards with us. For years, we used cheap ones we found at, I kid you not, CVS. But we finally had to upgrade because they were meant for small children, and they didn’t work that great for adults. We searched high and low at all the beach supply shacks on the Cape, and finally decided that these ones from Amazon were best for us, and we love them.

These boogie boards from Amazon are amazing to bring with you to the Atlantic beaches where the waves are bigger.

While these say they’re for children, they work really well for us (and are bigger and sturdier than the ones we previously had). I also liked the simple striped pattern, and they come in different colors. These always come with us when packing for Cape Cod so we can enjoy riding the big waves.

Every year, we see more and more people with boogie boards, from young children to seniors! It’s possible you’ll be sad you don’t have a board once you arrive, so this is definitely something to think about for your trip.

Beach Floaties

new england trip packing list

I posted this lobster floatie on Instagram last year because yes, as a 30-something adult, I bought this for myself at a beach supply shack on the Cape. And guess what? I love it. I got quite a few messages from people asking where I got it, and I finally found it on Amazon. If you’re looking for an awesome, New England floatie for your trip, I love this thing. Definitely not necessary, but also very fun!

Floatie Inflator

You’re probably thinking of a huge pump that seems cumbersome and not worth bringing with you, right? Well guys, what if I told you that the one we use fits in the palm of your hand and takes up no space at all in your beach bag? This one amazing , charges via USB and can even be used to start beach fires and inflate your beach pillow. It doesn’t inflate your things at lightening speed, but it’s fast enough considering the size, and super convenient.

This inflator from Amazon is the perfect size to throw into your beach bag without taking up any space at all. It's always on our list of what to pack for Cape Cod.

If you bring floaties with you to the beach, or use them in a pool, definitely get this. We love it. It would be great for families with children that need to use safety arm floaties as well.

This inflator is really helpful if you have children and need to inflate arm floaties or tubes for the kids.

Drink Koozies

So, these are definitely not necessary, but they are super cute, and whenever I post about them, I get asked where to buy them. These are mostly just for fun, but they do help to keep your drinks cool at the beach, too. We bring these with us for our canned drinks when we spend the whole day at the beach, and almost always get people stop to ask where we got them, so I wanted to give them a mention. They come in three colors, and we found ours on Amazon.

This drink kozies are always on our list of what to pack for Cape Cod. Mostly, they're just fun to use, but they do help to keep your drinks colder for longer, too.

What To Pack For A Cape Cod Vacation Rental

If you’re staying for a week on on the Cape, chances are you’ve booked a vacation rental, especially if you’re traveling in the summer. When deciding what to pack for Cape Cod for your stay in a rental, there are some things that you’ll want to look out for, as not all basic amenities are always included. I’m going to break down specific things to double check for, as well as helpful items we started to bring with us over the years.

Keep in mind that while you’ll see that some vacation rentals don’t provide some big items, they’ll usually have a fully-stocked kitchen, so you shouldn’t need to pack anything like dinnerware, drinkware, utensils, basic cooking pots and pans, dish soap, wine glasses or corkscrews. If in doubt, you can always ask the owner, or read reviews online. And always double check because there is no standard for stocked items at a vacation rental, as each one is different.

  • Bedding , including sheets, blankets, pillow cases and a comforter or blanket. Some vacation rentals don’t include bed linens. Be sure to check the listing before you book, or before you begin packing for your vacation. Some rentals will provide linen service for an additional fee. We have a designated set of bedding that we use just for Cape Cod trips, since we stay at the same place for most of our vacations.
  • Bathroom towels . This would also fall into the same category as bed linens. Some vacation rentals don’t offer these as standard, and may have an option to add these on for an additional fee. We always bring our own bathroom towels with us – x2 per person.
  • Hand soap . This is commonly provided at rentals but not always. We usually pack the kind we use at home, and then just bring it back home with us if we don’t use it. You may want to skip this one, but I wanted to mentioned it just in case.
  • Laundry detergent . If your rental has a washer and dryer, it’s not a bad idea to bring a small thing of laundry detergent in case you want to wash any dirty clothes or swimsuits. Some rentals may provide it, but in our experience, many do not.
  • Toiletries like shampoo and shower gel. These are often not included at a vacation rental, so we always buy a bottle of shower gel to bring with us (since we’re bar soap users at home), and pack our own shampoo for the week.
  • Toilet paper, paper towels and tissues . Some rentals may not be fully stocked, so if you have a large group, or see you only have 1-2 rolls, it’s a good idea to pack some (or buy some on your first day). We’re now in the habit of just bringing them with us for week-long stays.
  • Food storage containers & sandwich baggies . If you plan to pack lunches to bring to the beach, it’s not a bad idea to bring some reusable tupperware and/or sandwich baggies. We use tupperware for bringing watermelon chunks, sandwiches and cheese to the beach. We just use whatever we have at home and throw it all in our cooler when packing – no need to get all new stuff.
  • Ice packs for beach picnics (you could also just buy lots of ice and store in your freezer if your rental comes with one that’s full-size). We’ve always just found bringing our ice packs from home easier.

Tip : When we pack up our bed linens and bathroom towels, we pack them in big garbage bags. This makes it easy when packing up to leave your rental because you can toss them right back into the garbage bag, and when you get home, throw them directly in your washer. You can also do this with your beach towels and blankets.

What To Pack For Cape Cod: Summer Clothing

Okay! Now that we have everything else packed, let’s talk about clothing. If you’re planning to travel in the summer season, and are wondering what to pack for Cape Cod when it comes to outfits, I’ve got lots of suggestions for you. Here’s a general breakdown of clothing to pack for a week-long stay in the summer:

  • Swimwear and cover-ups as discussed above.
  • Underwear, bras, socks, etc. Think about the kinds of shoes you plan on wearing, and bring the appropriate socks. I’ve packed sneakers for morning jogs, and have forgotten to pack athletic socks. Ladies, also think about if you need a specific bra for an outfit, like a strapless one, for example.
  • 2-4 sundresses. I live in sundresses when I go to the Cape because they’re the easiest for me. I love that I can just throw it on, and not have to worry about coordinating tops and bottoms. They also take up less space for this reason. I personally always go for about 4-5 sundresses for a week-long stay (one of which is my nice outfit for a dinner out).
  • 2-4 pairs of shorts. If you pack 4 sundresses or so, you’ll likely only need 1-2 pairs of shorts. But pack more if you’re a shorts and top kind of person.
  • 5-6 t-shirts and tanks for any shorts you bring. One will likely be what you wear for the drive home.
  • Workout clothes if you plan to exercise or go on any hikes or nature walks.
  • A light sweater, sweatshirt or jacket for chillier days, evenings or boat rides. I usually pack a lightweight cardigan that works with a lot of different outfits, and then pack a Cuffy’s sweatshirt (or buy a new one while I’m there) as a more casual option.
  • 1 pair of pants or jeans for chillier days (I usually go for a pair of white jeans or navy blue chino-type pants).
  • Footwear: I usually pack one pair of sandals that I can wear with sundresses and walk around a lot in, 1 pair of flip flops for shorts/t-shirt days, 1 pair of beach flip flops, 1 pair of sneakers for morning jogs and 1 pair of dressier shoes for our nice dinners out.
  • Thigh-saver. This is a recent thing that I sometimes use. For anyone who lives in sundresses like I do, but gets thigh burn from thighs rubbing together all day, a thigh saver is super helpful! This is different from a body slimming thing – it’s just a light-weight pair of shorts that’s almost like a tights material that you wear under dresses, and they’re undetectable and I barely notice that I’m wearing it. I wear these when I have a longer walking day, like exploring Provincetown or Chatham.
  • For guys, you’ll likely live in shorts and t-shirts or button-down short-sleeved shirts. Guys will also want 1-2 pairs of long pants for colder nights or a nice dinner out, and 1-2 nice shirts if you plan to go out to a nice restaurant. My husband usually packs 1-2 pairs of flip flops, 1 pair of sneakers for morning jogs, and 1-2 pairs of boat shoes (which work for nice outfits, too).
  • Hats. I usually pack 1 cute straw-type hat and one baseball hat to wear while walking around to keep the sun off my face. This also keeps me from having to do my hair/bangs every day.
  • Purses. I usually bring one small crossbody, one tote bag for shopping and one bag that goes with my nice dinner outfit. Sometimes I get lazy and skip the dinner outfit bag, though.

Cape Cod Outfit Ideas For Summer

When deciding what to pack for Cape Cod, the trick to packing clothes for any vacation is to include things that all work together. And if you’re looking to get some Cape Cod outfit ideas for summer, or maybe just want to streamline your packing so everything works with a Cape Cod style, I have some inspiration for you below.

The great thing is New England outfits usually use a lot of the same colors and patterns, and they all work really well together.

Of course, it’s not necessary to only pack clothes that would fall into a specific style, but if you’re interested in streamlining your packing for this particular aesthetic, here are a few tips when coming up with Cape Cod outfit ideas .

  • New England style is very casual , for the most part, and grounded in lots of blues, neutrals and stripes, making it really easy to coordinate outfits. Block prints also work well. It tends to be pretty simple and classic, and not often trendy.
  • You don’t need to dress up a lot on Cape Cod , unless you’re going out to a fancy dinner. Most of the time, you’ll see people in shorts, t-shirts, baseball hats and flip flops. Sundresses are also popular, and double as a night-out outfit.
  • For a nice dinner out, you still don’t have to go super fancy . I often wear a midi or maxi-length sundress, sandals with a low heel or espadrilles, a handbag that goes with the outfit, and throw on a brighter lipstick to feel a little more put together. Men can do khaki or chino pants, a long-sleeved button down and shoes (even boat shoes work).

The places I find the most luck with getting coastal New England-inspired pieces are J.Crew and J.Crew Factory (especially for dresses, swimwear, whimsical/nautical patterns and tops), Old Navy (also great for dresses), Joules USA (great tops, jackets and dresses) and Tuckernuck for special and investment pieces, as well as the sunhat I’ve mentioned earlier in this post.

When looking for clothes, I tend to look for things in a stripe pattern, lots of blues in different hues, and neutrals. And let me tell you, I own about 10+ blue striped dresses 🙂 BUT, they go with everything, feel really classic and fit in so well on Cape Cod. Generally, that tends to be my own personal style year-round.

I also like to pick out a few whimsical patterned pieces, like a lobster-print t-shirt for example, as a fun way to mix it up. J.Crew typically does a pretty good job with East Coast/New England whimsical prints.

I’ve created a few New England fashion mood boards with outfit ideas you can use for inspiration. Most of these are screenshots from my own wardrobe to give you an idea of how I mix similar colors and patterns that will compliment each other to make packing more functional.

Please keep in mind that there are no links to products, simply because I know how quickly things sell out, and the links will be broken within a few weeks or months. Use these for inspiration, and then go from there.

Also keep in mind that you should dress however you feel comfortable. You don’t have to dress any certain way for any vacation, and you should always feel like yourself.

If you're unsure what to pack for Cape Cod, sundresses are a great idea. They're lightweight, easy and don't require additional items to pair them with.

What Is Cape Cod Casual Attire?

Cape Cod casual attire is pretty relaxed, and similar to most beach-casual attire in most destinations. Shorts, t-shirts or tank tops, sandals, sundresses and baseball or sun hats would fall into Cape Cod casual attire. Generally speaking, most people only wear swimsuits and cover-ups at the beach or at a beach bar. It’s not common to see people walking around town in beachwear, so definitely keep that in mind.

What To Wear On Cape Cod in May

May on the Cape can be a bit chilly and rainy, or warm and sunny, so it’s sometimes a challenge to decide what to wear on Cape Cod in May. The truth is, you really never know until about a few days, or a week before what kind of weather you’ll experience. Be sure to check the forecast a few days prior, and then begin to pack based on average temperature and rain predictions.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to consider packing these items when deciding what to wear on Cape Cod in May:

  • Pants (jeans, khakis or chinos) – You’ll likely wear these the most in May unless it’s unseasonably warm.
  • 1 pair of shorts if the weather is predicting warm weather during the day.
  • Sundresses – these are also a great option if you prefer them over pants, as you can pair them with sweaters.
  • T-shirts and tops – Unless it’s very warm, you’ll likely want to stick to t-shirts and tops with short sleeves. You may also want to consider 1-2 long-sleeved tops for evenings, or if you plan to spend some time at the beach for sunset.
  • Sweaters, sweatshirts and jackets – A waterproof or rain jacket is a good idea for the month of May, and I would suggest packing one casual sweatshirt, as well as 1-2 sweaters. You’ll likely need them every night.
  • Hats – A baseball hat and a sun hat to keep the sun out of your face on nice days.
  • Sandals and shoes – You’ll still likely want to pack sandals for May, but you may want to consider a pair of walking sneakers in addition to 1-2 pairs of sandals. Pack athletic sneakers for nature walks and hikes if you plan to do any.
  • Swimsuit – only pack a swimsuit for a May Cape Cod trip if you’re brave! The water will still be very cold at this point.

If you're trying decide what to wear on Cape Cod in May, think lots of layers. Sundresses with sweaters and pants with t-shirts and sweaters are a great idea.

What To Wear On Cape Cod In September

September weather on Cape Cod can still very much feel like summer and can get a bit chiller later in the month. A few days prior to leaving, double check the weather and pack accordingly based on temperature predictions. For the most part, you’ll want to pack similarly to summer, but swap out 1 pair of shorts for pants, and pack an extra sweatshirt or sweater for evenings.

Water temperatures in early to mid September are often the warmest, so definitely pack a swimsuit!

During the day in September, it will often still feel like summer, so just plan for chillier evenings, and you should be all set. And as always, remember that New England weather can fluctuate from year to year, so be sure to check the weather predictions prior to packing to make sure you’re prepared, in case it’s unseasonably warm or cold.

What To Pack For Cape Cod In The Fall

Packing for Cape Cod in the fall will be similar to my suggestions for May (see above). In early-mid October, it’s possible that if September was warm, the water will still be warm enough for a swim (but will definitely be colder!), so take a look at water temperature reports a few days prior to packing to see if you should consider packing a swimsuit.

If you’re planning to visit mid-late October through November, I wouldn’t suggest a swimsuit unless you have a wet suit (or are very brave!).

Packing for Cape Cod in the fall season (late September – November) should include:

  • Pants (no shorts needed!)
  • Tops – T-shirts and long-sleeved tops to match your pants
  • Dresses – Sundresses can be considered based on weather (just be sure to pair them with a sweater)
  • Footwear – 1 pair of sandals if you’re expecting warmer days in early fall, 1 pair of casual sneakers, 1 pair of athletic sneakers if you plan on doing any hikes or nature walks and 1 pair of espadrilles or nice shoes for dinners out (if needed). If you’re planning to visit in late fall, I suggest you swap the sandals for duck boots for beach walks.
  • Sweaters and sweatshirts – 2 sweaters that can be worn with your pants/tops and dresses. You’ll also want to throw in one casual sweatshirt.
  • Jackets – For October-November, I’d pack 1 jacket that’s medium warmth in case it gets too cold for just a sweater.
  • Hats, gloves and scarves – It’s possible you’ll experience some colder days in late October through November. You’ll want to look at the weather and decide if you need these. At minimum, I would pack a hat and scarf, especially since the beach will be colder than elsewhere.

Fall weather on the Cape can vary, so it's best to dress in layers. And keep in mind that once you get into mid to late October, you'll want to bring a jacket, and possible some boots, hats and scarves.

Now you should feel ready when it comes time to decide what to pack for Cape Cod! Of course, adjust as necessary based on how long you stay, your type of accommodation, and your personal preference. But I wanted to make a comprehensive list for everything you may need to have an easy and comfortable trip to make sure you don’t forget anything.

And of course, since Cape Cod is a residential area as well as being a vacation destination, should you forget anything, there are plenty of places you can go to pick up clothing, groceries and toiletries.
