  • Roam316643 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful day touring the Normandy Battlefields Our tour guide Helene picked us up directly from our Airbnb in Bayeux which was perfect. There was only one other couple on the tour, so it felt like a private tour just for the four of us which made it nice. Helene was knowledgable and thorough. She was very personable and gave us insight into many sites on the tour; the German Military Cemetery, Utah Beach, Sainte Mere Elise, the Airborne Museum, Pointe de Hoc, Omaha Beach, and the American Military Cemetery. It really was special to be there so close to the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion as they are preparing for a big event with so many dignitaries coming to mark the occasion. We were very pleased with this tour and highly recommend. Read more Written May 27, 2024
  • XCRunner7 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very Informative Tour! Our tour guide Matthew was amazing! Showed and told us many things that I never would have found out outside of the tour. German cemetery, Utah Beach, Saint-Marie Eglise, Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, and the American cemetery, with a few more small stops along the way. Definitely recommend! Read more Written May 27, 2024
  • Q9961ZLbrians 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A 5 star living history lesson. You’ve seen these places in films but nothing prepares you for the actual Battlefields We had originally put down by mistake the American battlefields tour. But the guides will change things and accomodate the itinerary to suit you. Our guide Noemie was really good taking us to Ranville cemetary so that we could lay some flowers. It was amazing, as well as showing us the old mediaevil church with its beautiful stain glass windows well worth a visit. Also going to Pegasus Bridge, Arromanche, Pointe Du Hoc etc. The Ver-Sur-Mer memorial with its silhouettes was very moving. She was very knowledgeable and nothing was a problem making the whole days experience well worth going to. Thanks again Noemie from Brian, Ann, Kieran and Nathan Slingsby. • Karinmch 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles I would rate a 10 Everything about this tour went as expected and beyond. Our tour guide was Jeremiah. He was very knowledgeable and caring for us. Get Jeremiah if you can. Seeing Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach was quite overwhelming. The Cemetery will humble you. We took this tour from the cruise ship and pick up was prompt. The drive was a beautiful step into the French countryside. Wonderful day. Read more Written May 14, 2024
  • 286caleym 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly Recommended Canadian Tour The tour was great and was everything I had hoped for. We had a very private tour. Just me, my partner, and one other couple. Our guide was very friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Gayton (spelling?) was from the area and had had connections to get us in at a nice restaurant on a very busy holiday weekend. The tour was very focused on Canada's contribution to the D-day invasion and the days after. At times it was explained down to the minute what was happening on June 6th, 1944. Juno Beach Centre was a beautiful building with an enjoyable walk through experience. The outdoor tour of bunkers and covered trench was very poiniant and informative. I would highly recommend this tour, especially to any Canadians looking for a Canadian focused tour. Read more Written May 11, 2024

Jack was our tour guide and he did a great job giving us his insight and knowledge. It was a full day tour but had a great pace and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. Read more Written May 6, 2024

Our guide Helena did a wonderful job showing us the many sites of the beaches (Omaha and Utah) as well as the American and German cemeteries. A great, but somber experience. Freedom is never free! • Z1257CLevank 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Very basic We have been travelling in Europe for 3 weeks doing tours focused on the world wars and the cold war. This was easily the weakest tour we encountered on the entire trip. Our tour guide was punctual and the van was very clean. We had a small group of four and the tour covered many of the important sites of D-Day from a Canadian perspective. We came away with a better understanding of the Canadian involvement in D-Day. The tour included about 2 hours at the Juno Beach Centre which is very worthwhile. This is something that is better done on your own (can easily spend more time) rather than paying for a tour guide to sit in the van. Other tour operators do exactly this and spend more time with you giving deeper insights into the events of 1944. The real problem we had with the tour was the lack of knowledge of our tour guide. If it was not in her guide book or on a plaque, she did not know about it. There was no depth or colourful insights that I expect given my experience on other tours of this nature. The day was overcast and chilly with a strong wind. Our group was well dressed for the day ... except our tour guide who was easily the most uncomfortable particularly when on the beaches. At the end of the day, this was a basic tour. If you want something with richness and depth, I would look for another tour operator. In particular, look for a tour guide who is passionate about the topic and researches the history as a hobby/profession. Read more Written April 21, 2024

We felt lucky to have her . She tailored our experience to fit our needs ( family member with limited mobility , special attention to teenage family member , etc). Manon was extremely knowledgeable. We all learned things we had never read anywhere else . A very moving experience . We highly recommend . Read more Written April 1, 2024
  • Peroness 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Humbling Adrien M was our guide he was very knowledgeable of all the site he drove us to, he pointed out sites along the way and gave interesting info on the small towns we drove through. Adrien takes pride in his job and it shows. He had answers to all of our questions, the tour is roughly 8 hrs and well worth the time, as we would not have seen or have the information if we did this on our own. Adrien is from Bayeux which to me makes a big different in that he has more info about the region then someone who is not from that area. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour through Normandy Sightseeing Tours Read more Written February 18, 2024
  • Joan P 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles The tour became the Longest Day. The tour was wonderful. Rose did an excellent job and was very knowledgeable. The problem was that one of the participants was ill and threw up at least 6 times in front of the group. Despite our urging him to leave he refused. Now my husband has it and I will probably follow tomorrow. The company should develop a policy stating that people who are obviously ill will be dropped off at the first opportunity. What about the rest of us whose good time was ruined? Read more Written January 22, 2024
  • catherinewA2837EY 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent guide for a tour you shouldn't miss Our excellent and very well prepared tour guide, Gwen, gave us a deeply informed account of the Allied Invasion, full of interesting facts and anecdotes. He deftly engaged everyone in our family, even our 10 year old, and answered all of our questions thoughtfully. It was deeply moving to tour the sites with such a well informed professional. We wouldn't have gotten nearly as much out of the experience had we visited the sites independently. I highly recommend this tour company. This was one of our very best experiences during our 12-day visit to France. Read more Written January 7, 2024

What you can expect

Embark on a Mont Saint-Michel day trip and take a trip with us to one of France’s most iconic monuments!

The Mont Saint Michel is an island off the coast of Normandy, in the English Channel, and is one of the best Normandy tours you can choose. It is located about 1 kilometer from the shore and sits in a bay that sees some of the biggest tides in Europe. A few years ago, it got linked to the mainland by a bridge that gets flooded during high tides a few times a year only.

The first church was built on the mount in 709 at the request of Archange Michael. A couple of hundred years later, a small group of Benedictines settled there permanently and the church was enlarged. The first monastery was carved in the rock in the 11th century and gradually got bigger and bigger over the following centuries. In the medieval time, it quickly became an important destination for pilgrims, just like Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

The construction of the abbey as we know it nowadays was finished in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the grand chancel was replaced in the 15th century. Those hundreds of years of architectural prowesses have left us with a magnificent monument, now referred as the “Wonder of the Western World”. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site.

During your day trip to Mont Saint Michel, our friendly driver and our English-speaking guide will take you from Bayeux to the Mont Saint Michel, that you will access via a shuttle and the bridge in accordance with local requirements.

Our Mont Saint Michel tour will then take you to the abbey itself, at the very top of the mount. The history of its construction will be explained in detail and while you are there, make sure to snap some pictures of the amazing views on the surrounding bay!

After the visit of the abbey, our guide will set you free to explore the town at your own pace and bring back some souvenirs for friends and family. Your guide will also suggest some great restaurants for lunch, suitable for all budgets.

If you want to indulge, the Mère Poulard restaurant is probably the most famous on the mount. It gained its reputation thanks to its unique omelette soufflée recipe. It is well worth a visit and a must-try when on a Mont Saint Michel day tour.

At the end of this Mont Saint-Michel tour, your chauffeur will take you back to your original meeting point in Bayeux.

Come and Discover

The Mont-Saint-Michel and its abbey on the border between Normandy and Brittany, one of the first sites to obtain UNESCO World Heritage listing. Be amazed by the prodigious accomplishments of medieval architecture, by the forces of nature, and the ever-changing light.

Some History

Mont Saint Michel (often written Mont St Michel, with other variations) is a small UNESCO World Heritage site located on an island just off the coast of the region of Lower Normandy in northern France. The island is best known as the site of the spectacular and well-preserved Norman Benedictine Abbey of St Michel at the peak of the rocky island, surrounded by the winding streets and convoluted architecture of the medieval town.

Until it was ransacked by the Franks, thus ending the trans-channel culture that had stood since the departure of the Romans in AD 460.

SAINT AUBERT

Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called “mons tumba”.

According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, in 708 and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel’s instruction, until Michael burned a hole in the bishop’s skull with his finger. The saint’s skull, with hole, can be seen in St Gervais churche in Avranches. »

William The Conqueror

The mount gained strategic significance in 933 when William “Long Sword”, William I, Duke of Normandy, annexed the Cotentin Peninsula, definitively placing the mount in Normandy.

It appears on the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts the 1066 Norman conquest of England: Harold saves Norman knights from the quicksands in the tidal flats during a battle with Conan II, Duke of Brittany. Norman Ducal then French royal patronage financed the spectacular Norman architecture of the abbey in subsequent centuries.

In 1065, the monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel gave its support to duke William of Normandy in his claim to the throne of England. It was rewarded with properties and grounds on the English side of the Channel, including a small island located to the west of Cornwall, which was modeled after the Mount, and became a Norman priory named St Michael’s Mount of Penzance.

During the Hundred Years’ War, the English made repeated assaults on the island, but were unable to seize it due to the abbey’s improved fortifications. Les Michelettes – two wrought-iron bombards left by the English in their failed 1423–24 siege of Mont-Saint-Michel – are still displayed near the outer defense wall.

The Order of Saint-Michel

When Louis XI of France founded the Order of Saint Michael in 1469, he intended that the abbey church of Mont Saint-Michel be the chapel for the Order, but because of its great distance from Paris, his intention could never be realized.

The wealth and influence of the abbey extended to many daughter foundations, including St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. However, its popularity and prestige as a centre of pilgrimage waned with the Reformation, and by the time of the French Revolution there were scarcely any monks in residence. The abbey was closed and converted into a prison, initially to hold clerical opponents of the republican régime. High-profile political prisoners followed, but by 1836, influential figures – including Victor Hugo – had launched a campaign to restore what was seen as a national architectural treasure. The prison was finally closed in 1863, and the mount was declared a historic monument in 1874. The Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979, and it was listed with criteria such as cultural, historical, and architectural significance, as well as human-created and natural beauty .

Then, after the visit of the Mont-Saint-Michel, we will take you to the  Brittany American Cemetery . This is a different cemetery to the one included in our Tour 2 Omaha/Utah.

We will discuss the story of two soldiers with great emotion and contemplation. Overlordtour offers you the advantage of visiting the cemetery as part of the tour of the Mont Saint-Michel. This is a plus compared to other companies!

Sweeping The German Nazis out of France

In sweeping the German Nazis out of France, during the summer of 1944, Allied troops pushed the fight south into St. Lô and Avranches. Other offensives were launched on the Brittany peninsula to the west, and thousands more U.S. soldiers died. The storming of Normandy’s beaches was just the start.

Initially intended as a temporary cemetery during the Avranches thrust in the first days of August 1944, the Brittany American Cemetery was officially opened in 1956. Covering an area of some twelve hectares granted to the United States by the French Government, the 4,410 crosses or stars of David mark the graves of men who fell during the fighting to liberate not only Normandy but Brittany, too.
