‘Jordan, Palestine, Israel united in sky for Modi’: Watch PM’s big, bold interview
In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recounted how Jordan, Palestine, Israel - countries having different relations with each other - came together when he had to fly to Palestine through Jordan.
PM Modi said during his recent visit to Jordan, he was invited by the Middle East country's president for dinner. "When the President of Jordan came to know that I am going to Palestine over (the airspace of Jordan), he offered me his helicopter," PM Modi said.
"The helicopter was of Jordan, the destination was Palestine, and I was escorted by Israeli flight attendants. All three are different but for Modi, all came together in the sky. I believe that all this happens when your intentions are good," he said.

'I visited Palestine on Jordan's chopper and Israeli jets escorted my trip': PM Modi at India TV event
During india tv's highly anticipated event, prime minister narendra modi criticised the frameworks used to define "secularism" in india, particularly in the formulation of foreign policies during the congress-led upa government while visiting israel and palestine..
According to PM Modi, the officials were worried that if he visited Israel abandoning Palestine, it might disseminate a bad impression on both neighbouring turned rival nations. "In my earlier days of Prime Ministership, people advised me to visit Israel and Palestine simultaneously in order to keep a balanced approach in foreign policy," he said while recalling how people made him acquaintance of India's "so-called secular policy" towards Jews and Muslim-dominated Palestine state.
When PM Modi visited Israel without visiting Palestine
PM Modi, during the mega interview, said he had refuted the ideas presented before him and told them he would not visit the two states at once. It is worth recalling PM Modi visited Jerusalem in 2017 and became the first Indian prime minister to visit Israel. At that time, he had not travelled to Ramallah or met Palestinian leaders, as visiting dignitaries often do during the Congress regime. The visit was seen as a turning point in India's position on Israel.
On his single trip to Israel, Prime Minister Modi received an exceptional level of hospitality from the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. Breaking from standard protocol, Netanyahu personally accompanied Modi for the majority of his visit, a gesture typically reserved for esteemed guests like the US president. Furthermore, PM Modi, in his latest interview, also recalled his visit to Palestine. The BJP leader shared how he rode into Palestine's Ramallah in 2018.
When Israel's Air Force escorted PM Modi's chopper to Palestine
In a departure from the norm, Prime Minister Modi opted for a direct route to Ramallah via helicopter provided by the Jordanian government, with escorts provided by the Israel Air Force, unlike previous Indian leaders who typically accessed Ramallah via Israel.
"When I was visiting Palestine via Jordan, Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein had called me and said he would be providing his helicopter to reach Ramallah. Interestingly, at least six fighter jets of the Israel Air Force had escorted by choppers," PM Modi said.
In an uncommon video posted by the then Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, the Prime Minister's helicopter was depicted en route to Ramallah with its escort. Kumar, in a social media post, called it "history in the making".
Israeli authorities control all entrance and exit points to the West Bank including its 150 km border with Jordan and the air space above. It is worth mentioning that Israeli authorities oversee all entry and exit points to the West Bank, which includes its 150 km border with Jordan and the airspace above it.
He also recalled earlier how dignitaries visited South Korea and Japan simultaneously. PM Modi said even the two nations did not like an Indian leader visiting both states at once.

Narendra Modi begins first-ever Israel visit by an Indian PM
JERUSALEM (AFP) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Israel on Tuesday (July 4) for what he called a "groundbreaking" first ever visit by an Indian premier, with growing ties between the two countries including billion of dollars in defence deals.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials gave Modi a red carpet welcome at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv as he began his three-day visit.
The two leaders embraced heartily and gave brief speeches, pledging to work together on issues including security, agriculture and energy.
"It is my singular honour to be the first ever prime minister of India to undertake this groundbreaking visit to Israel," Modi said.
Netanyahu said "we've been waiting for you a long time. We've been waiting almost 70 years in fact, because yours is truly a historic visit".
Modi later visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem and was to have dinner with Netanyahu.
The two leaders are to hold talks on Wednesday.
Israel, constantly searching for allies at the United Nations and for new business partners, has portrayed the visit as a major diplomatic victory.
Israeli analysts have noted that Modi is not scheduled to travel to Ramallah to meet Palestinian leaders during his three-day stay, as is common for visiting dignitaries.
Modi did however meet Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in New Delhi in May.
India is the world's biggest importer of defence equipment, and Israel has become one of its major suppliers.
Israeli media have reported that the two countries sign defence deals averaging more than $1 billion (880 million euros) a year.
In April, state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries said India would buy nearly US$2 billion (S$2.7 billion) worth of weapons technology, making it the military exporting giant's largest ever defence contract.
The deal will see IAI provide India with an advanced defence system of medium-range surface-to-air missiles, launchers and communications technology.
'MAKE WITH INDIA'
Modi and Netanyahu also hope to build on cooperation in areas including water and agriculture technology, sectors where Israel has excelled.
India has traditionally voiced its support for Palestinian statehood, long shunning ties with Israel.
But the frost has thawed in recent years, with India seeking closer defence ties - particularly as it moves away from relying on traditional ally Russia for its military hardware.
Modi's visit marks 25 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations.
The Hindu nationalist makes the trip after his visit last week to Washington, where he and US President Donald Trump embraced each other as friends, vowing to work more closely on combatting terrorism, the war in Afghanistan and defence cooperation.
While ties with some US allies have been strained by Trump's complaints that Washington has been the loser in trade agreements, Modi appeared sensitive to his host's emphasis on transactional diplomacy.
Modi may find similar common ground with Netanyahu, Israel's longtime right-wing prime minister who hosted Trump in May.
India is currently the world's fastest growing major economy, a status that Modi is hoping to cement by drawing in more foreign investment.
He has sought to do that in part by encouraging manufacturers to do business in Asia's third-largest economy.
Israel's defence deals have included components that will be assembled in India.
"On this visit, your 'make in India' initiative meets my 'make with India' policy," Netanyahu said at the airport ceremony.

PM Narendra Modi’s Israel visit boosts tourist arrivals from India
"first of all, it is the awareness that it is good to do business with each other, secondly business travellers influx will automatically grow. overall the positive atmosphere is helping us (tourism sector) to grow," said the director-israel ministry of tourism..
A senior official of Israel tourism has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel this year has given a boost to its tourism sector with the arrival of Indian tourists to Israel recording a rise of 26 per cent. “The historic visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to our country has sparked a renewed interest among Indians to visit Israel,” Hassan Madah, director-Israel ministry of tourism, India, told PTI.
“In the last seven months, over 34,000 Indians have visited Israel, which is a growth of 36 percent,” he said.
PM Modi’s visit, Madah said, had sent out a “positive message”. “First of all, it is the awareness that it is good to do business with each other, secondly business travellers influx will automatically grow. Overall the positive atmosphere is helping us (tourism sector) to grow ,” Madah said.
He pointed out that direct flights from New Delhi to Israel, will help the tourism sector to grow much faster.
Madah said, talks are on for introducing direct Air India flights connecting New Delhi with Israel. “If it (direct flight) commences, then the tourist traffic is likely to surge from India and vice-versa,” he said.
When asked whether Israel would provide special package or concessions to Indian Jewish community wishing to visit Israel, Madah said, “As regards tourism, the population of the Jewish community in India is very small. Our focus is not the Jewish community.”
“In the US, the Jewish community is very big, there our focus is the Jewish community,” he said.
“In india, our focus is pilgrimage (tourism), quality tourism, leisure, events, conferences, incentive tourism,” Madah said.
Quoting statistics, Madah said, near about 39,529 Indian tourists travelled to Israel in 2015 and the figure went up to 44,672 in 2016. “Till July 2017, 34,300 Indians have visited Israel. So you can just see the rise,” he said.

Narendra Modi Israel visit date, schedule, agenda, defence deals, significance: All you want to know
Narendra modi israel visit: prime minister narendra modi will be visiting israel from july 4-6, 2017 at the invitation of his israeli counterpart benjamin netanyahu..
Narendra Modi Israel Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Israel from July 4-6, 2017 at the invitation of his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. This will be the first ever visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Israel. During the visit, PM Modi is expected to have detailed discussions with PM Netanyahu on matters of mutual interest to both countries. PM Modi will also call on Israeli President Rivlin. According to an MEA release, during the visit, PM Modi will pay homage to Indian soldiers at the Indian Cemetery in Haifa. On Wednesday evening, PM Modi will address a massive rally for the Indians at Tel Aviv Fairgrounds. Israel is home to around 80,000-85,000 persons of Indian origin.
PM Modi’s visit will be special as both countries are commemorating 25 years of diplomatic relations. India had recognised Israel as a sovereign nation in 1950. However, formal full diplomatic relation with Israel was established in 1992. Since then the relationship has evolved into a multi-dimensional partnership including in areas like defence, technology, education etc. Modi’s visit is expected to provide an impetus for deeper bilateral engagement in areas of mutual interest.
During the three-day visit, PM Modi will stay at the King David Hotel where US President Donald Trump had stayed during his recent visit to the country. A red carpet will be laid out to welcome PM Modi and his delegation at the hotel. Isareli PM Natanyahu will accompany PM Modi at several events during the three-day visit.
In a first, PM Modi will also address the Israeli Parliament Knesset during the visit.
Both PM Modi and PM Netanyahu are expected to sign some major defence deals and also talk about cooperation on cyber security. According to Reuters, Modi will hold three days of talks with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, to advance sales and production of missiles, drones and radar systems under his signature “ Make in India ” drive. India is now Israel’s biggest arms market , buying weapons at an average of $1 billion each year.
PM Modi will not travel to Ramallah, the seat of Palestine Authority.
India and Israel are also expected to announce strategic partnerships in areas including water, agriculture and space technology during PM Modi’s Israel visit.
PM Modi will also be discussing a plan for Israeli help in boosting India’s food security. Officials told Reuters that the plan is to expand 26 agriculture expertise centres that Israel has set up in 15 Indian states to help increase output of everything from vegetables to mangoes and pomegranates. Israeli companies dealing in drip agriculture technology are also hopeful of significant deals during PM Modi’s visit to the country.
Significance
Israel considers Modi’s visit as a recognition of its rise as a powerful country, especially a technology giant in the world. “Once it was a disadvantage to say that you are from Israel. Today when you talk about cyber or advanced technology, it is an advantage to say we are an Israeli company. The whole world wants us. The whole world is coming here”, PM Netanyahu was quoted by PTI as saying at the Cyber Week 2017 conference in Tel Aviv University.
“For example, there is going to be a visit of Prime Minister of India, one of the most important Prime minister’s of the world, with the third largest economy in the world growing very fast. He wants close cooperation with Israel in many fields — water, agriculture, health and also in cyber security. And he has a good reason to do so”, the Israeli PM saif in Hebrew. The Israeli PM stressed that Israel’s growing acceptance across the world, especially as a “technology giant”, is going to come to full expression during the upcoming visit of “my friend Narendra Modi”.
For India, PM Modi’s visit marks an end to India’s ambivalence towards Israel in the last many decades. Even after recognising Israel in 1950 as a sovereign country, India established full formal diplomatic ties with country only in 1992. And it took 25 years after that for an Indian PM to visit Israel. That too when Israel is one of the biggest defence partners of India. The country had supplied arms to India during 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan.

Israel-Gaza latest: Hamas responds to ceasefire proposal - as Netanyahu casts doubt on deal
Joe Biden announced a surprise plan with three phases: the first would be a six-week ceasefire, the second the return of remaining hostages, and the third a reconstruction plan for Gaza. We'll be bringing you all the reaction to this throughout the day.

We will be focusing on our general election coverage tomorrow, but we'll be back with more live updates on the Israel-Hamas war next week.
Models Bella and Gigi Hadid are collectively donating one million dollars (£785,000) to support relief efforts, according to their agent.
The money will go to Heal Palestine, Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
The sisters have frequently been vocal in their support for Gaza, and their father Mohamed Anwar Hadid is himself Palestinian.
After Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel, Gigi, 29, offered her condolences to those affected.
"My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict - too many of which are children," she wrote on Instagram.
"I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it's a responsibility I hold daily."
She added: "While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person."
Bella, 27, said in May that she was "devastated at the loss of the Palestinian people and the lack of empathy coming from the government systems worldwide".
The United Nations food agency has said it is unable to feed most civilians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Only 27,000 people in Rafah are currently being reached by the World Food Programme (WFP), according to its local director Matthew Hollingworth.
Roughly one million Palestinians are living in the area, many of them displaced from other parts of Gaza.
"The sounds, the smells, the everyday life are horrific and apocalyptic," Mr Hollingworth told journalists.
"People sleep to the sounds of bombing, they sleep to the sounds of drones, they sleep to the sounds of war, as now tanks roll into parts of central Rafah, which is only kilometers away. And they wake to the same sounds."
A ceasefire proposal consisting of three phases has been outlined by Joe Biden.
What do those phases entail, what have Israel and Hamas said about the plan and how does it compare to the last proposal?
Read more below...
The French president has backed the ceasefire proposal set out by Joe Biden last night.
Emmanuel Macron said he supported the proposal for "a durable peace" and that the war "must end".
France is also working with partners in the region on "peace and security for all", he said.
A high-level official has said Egypt is undertaking "intensive efforts" to "resume negotiations" for a ceasefire and hostage deal, according to a report.
The official, quoted by Al-Qahera TV, said this was "in light of the recent American proposition".
Last night, Joe Biden detailed a ceasefire and hostage deal proposal that he said Israel had put to Hamas.
However, Israeli officials have told our correspondents they were "blindsided" by the announcement.
If it works, then this will be a smart and cunning diplomatic move.
If it doesn't then President Joe Biden will look foolish.
He knows the huge risk of once again being taken for a ride by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Few knew that he was due to make this announcement.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has said 33 of its employees have been killed in Gaza since the war began.
Of those, it said 19 were killed "while performing their humanitarian duties".
The organisation today buried Mohammed Jihad Abed, an employee in the disaster risk management department.
He was killed in an Israeli attack on his home in Rafah last night.
American, Egyptian and Israeli officials will be meeting tomorrow in Cairo to discuss the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing, according to a report.
Egypt is insisting that Israel withdraw its forces from the crossing, a high-level source told Egypt's state-linked Al Qahera TV.
Israel seized the Gaza side of the crossing last month during its offensive in the city of Rafah.
Earlier this week, a member of Egypt's security forces was killed in a shooting incident near the Rafah crossing.
An Egyptian soldier stationed on a watchtower had reacted to seeing an armoured vehicle carrying Israeli troops cross a boundary line near the border while the soldiers pursued and killed several Palestinians, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters news agency.
The soldier opened fire and Israeli forces fired back, killing him, the sources said, sparking an exchange of gunfire between the two sides.
The British prime minister has praised the proposed ceasefire deal set out by Joe Biden, saying it is "welcome news".
Rishi Sunak said he hopes Hamas "takes this opportunity to take this deal that is on the table, [and] that would ensure hostages can be released and be back with their families".
He also expressed hopes to "flood Gaza with far more aid than has been getting in" and to "use that pause in the fighting to build a sustainable and lasting peace".
Mr Sunak joins a growing group of world leaders expressing support for the deal, which will only put more pressure on Israel and Hamas.

Jinsa report defends israel’s conduct in gaza but critiques its larger strategy, israel to launch travel authorization program for foreign visitors.
The new system is similar to those used in the United States, Canada and Australia

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - APRIL 14: Passengers at Ben Gurion Airport wait after Israel closed its airspace to all domestic and international flights and canceled flights in the wake of Iran's attack on Israel last month.
Israel is set to launch a travel authorization program for foreign visitors to the country, beginning with a pilot program starting on Saturday for travelers arriving from the U.S. and Germany.
The program, which is similar to those used in the U.S., Canada and Australia, will require non-Israeli passport holders traveling to the country to obtain electronic travel authorization (ETA-IL) – through israel-entry.piba.gov.il – before setting off on their trip.
In a statement this week, Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority said the new program was aimed at improving security, immigration and general services.
The ministry said it would “help the authorities to obtain information about the passenger before he or she even boards the plane, and if a problem arises that prevents him or her from entering Israel, the passenger will be referred to the Israeli embassy in his or her country of residence.”
“It will prevent any unpleasant surprises for passengers who land at the border and are refused entry,” the statement said.
Israel’s Ministry of Tourism also explained that the new system would speed up online confirmations and “allow for a simplified, stress-free entry process through electronic check-in machines when visiting Israel.”
Over the past two years, as Israel slowly reopened its borders following the COVID-19 pandemic, tourists arriving at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv had been subjected to lengthy waits at passport control, while Israelis with biometric passports could whiz through using electronic scanning machines.
The ministry said that starting on July 1, travelers from all visa-exempt countries will be able to take advantage of the pilot program, and from Aug. 1, the new system will be instituted as the new entry protocol for all incoming travelers from visa-exempt countries.
Once approved for travel through the system, visitors will be permitted to stay in Israel for up to 90 days and the authorization will remain valid for up to two years, or until the passport used to apply for the ETA-IL has expired.
The ministry also emphasized that during the pilot phase June 1-July 31, the $7 application fee will be waived.
“As a tech-forward county, streamlining the entry process with the new online ETA-IL application is a natural progression,” said Eyal Carlin, commissioner of tourism to North America in Israel’s Tourism Ministry. “It will allow for smoother arrivals and more time for travelers to enjoy all Israel has to offer.”
“While we are currently in a challenging time, we encourage those with an interest in visiting the country to take note of the new entry process as they continue their travel planning,” he said.
Israel first announced that it would be implementing a travel authorization system for all foreign visitors, including U.S. citizens, last year as it was in the final phase of applying for the U.S.’ coveted Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
In September 2023, after more than three decades of attempts, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Tony Blinken announced that Israel’s application to the VWP had been successful. On Nov. 30, the country was fully incorporated into the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), allowing Israeli citizens to apply for visa-free travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days.

Flight tickets to the UAE cheaper now; tickets to Kerala cost a bomb
The airfares to Kerala from the Gulf region have skyrocketed, as usual, during the holiday season. The passengers are worried about the soaring airfares that may mar their plans to visit their homeland. The airports have been swarmed with Malayali travellers for the last few days. The schools in Kerala are about to reopen after the summer vacation and the families who were on visit visas in the UAE are returning. Meanwhile, expatriate political leaders too are eager to fly to Kerala to celebrate the Lok Sabha election verdict. The only saving grace is that the tickets to the UAE are cheaper. It would cost up to 1600 – 1800 dirhams if you book up and down tickets this month. The affordable airfares to UAE are the only factor that doesn’t cause financial stress on the passengers who are flying to Kerala. However, this might change next month as the ticket charges to both sides are likely to get pricier.
