MOD SUN (born March 10, 1987) is the stage name of alternative hip-hop rapper and musician Dylan Smith, who has released a string of EPs and mixtapes since his debut in 2009 – hailing from Bloomington, Minnesota, U.S.

Born Derek Smith in Bloomington, Minnesota, Smith changed his first name to Dylan after turning 18, and adopted the moniker MOD SUN shortly afterwards. The performer’s earliest musical excursion came playing drums in the post-hardcore band Four Letters Lie, where he remained until 2009. That year he joined the band Scary Kids Scaring Kids as the drummer, where he was given the creative freedom to pursue his own interests and debuted MOD SUN as a opening act. It was therefore natural for Smith to continue to performing as MOD SUN following Scary Kids Scaring Kids’ disbandment in 2010.

The rapper’s debut release was the mixtape “I’ll Buy Myself” in 2009, followed by the subsequent mixtapes “Let Ya Teeth Show” and “How to Make A MOD SUN”. The following year, significantly raising MOD SUN’s profile, the rapper issued the EP “The Hippy Hop” and the single “Need That”. 2011 proved a busy year for the rising star with the release of the EP “In MOD We Trust”, the mixtapes “Health, Wealth, Success, & Happiness” and “Blazed By The Bell”, as well as the single “Paradisity”. In collaboration with The Ready Set, MOD SUN issued the single “All Night, Every Night” in 2012, which was succeeded by the EP “Hippy As Fuck” later that year. After another busy year in 2013, MOD SUN signed with Rostrum Records in 2014 who issued the hippy-hop rapper’s debut full-length album “Look Up” in March 2015.

I saw mod on warped tour last year, he was one of the very first acts, most people don't go to those. Mod didn't care, when he came out he had so much energy and was having the time of his life on stage, which drew a larger crowd. He definitely has great presence and is a blessing to watch honestly. I was lucky to meet him after the show, waiting in line for 45 minutes, but when i met him, he was still extremely happy, not having lost an energy even though going through a line of people. i asked him to sign my shoe because that's where i have all my signatures, and he said that it was awesome he got to be the first signature of that warped tour for me. I then asked him how his day was and he replied "this is the best day of my life." his energy and love on that day will stay with me forever i think.

Last night's show was absolutely incredible. MOD SUN killed it, call me karizma was amazing, Adam Vegas and forget Brenden smoked a cigarette with the fans, and everyone there was super cool, after the show most of the performers were happy to meet their fans so I met all 5 performers.

The venue was kinda small but super punk rock, but the audience mostly all stayed super involved with the show.

Security was pretty light, no Pat down, no emptying my pockets, nothing.

This was cool for me because I brought a doobie that I passed to mod himself on stage.(the best moment of the night and maybe even my life) However this did cause at least 2 people to look like absolute xan-bies. And Xanax is fucking lame.

All things considered this concert was amazing! I hope Mod comes back to SLC!

Really enjoyed watching him perform last night at The Ritz in Raleigh,NC! He got the crowed pumped up & ready for MGK! Wish he would have performed more than 3 songs tho! either way he was a blast and I love his fun free spirit, good vibes, and smiles! Loved his & MGK's Halloween costumes (Cheech & Chong)!! Definently was a great time and an epic Halloween!

fucking amazing. I don't really know how to put something like that into words. I was just a few feet away from the stage so the energy was crazy and fun. I will definitely have to go to another show.

it was such an amazing show!! the venue was efficient and everyone was kind. great crowd and great vibes. i loved the energy of the entire line up. will 100% go again :)

MOD SUN Reveals More of Forthcoming Album 'God Save The Teen'

The album is set to drop via Big Noise on February 3, 2023.

Today, pop-punk sensation MOD SUN has unveiled the tracklisting and album artwork for his forthcoming album God Save The Teen, which is set to drop via Big Noise on February 3, 2023. Pre-order the album here .

Ahead of his album release and massive U.S. tour, MOD SUN will be featured as a musical guest at the X Games Aspen 2023 on Jan. 27-29, alongside Kaskade, Yung Gravy, Night Tales, MADDS, and girlfriends. His performance will be live streamed on X Games YouTube and Twitch.

Additionally, MOD SUN revealed on socials that the new album will not feature any singles. "No one has heard any of the songs yet. It's all completely brand-new material. It is to be experienced as a pure body of work to enjoy."

"I miss when an artist dropping an album felt like an event and it's been awhile since I've felt like an album is one giant piece of work, instead of just a bunch of songs," MOD SUN shares. "This is my best body of work and I want to present it in the purest way possible."

Following their 2021 collaboration on MOD SUN's single "Flames" (>106 million streams), his latest 12-track collection sees him once again join forces with his fiancée Avril Lavigne. God Save The Teen also features a collaboration with Royal and The Serpent and MOD's exceptional approach to Goo Goo Dolls' 1998 hit single "Iris."

After supporting blackbear earlier this year, MOD SUN will return to the road at the start of 2023 to headline with Stand Atlantic as support. The God Save The Teen Tour will kick off at Goldfield Trading Post Roseville in Sacramento on Feb. 19, includes a March 15 show at Irving Plaza in New York City, and wraps in Los Angeles on April 2 at The Fonda Theatre.

With a career spanning over a decade, prolific songwriter MOD SUN has worked with some of the biggest names in music including his fiancée Avril Lavigne, his best friend and frequent collaborator Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker, G-Eazy, blackbear, Gashi, Nipsey Hussle, gnash, Schoolboy Q, and producer/musician John Feldmann. Singer-songwriter Mod Sun has announced a spring 2023 tour across North America promoting his most recent album 'Internet Killed the Rockstar' . His God Save The Teen Tour kicks off February 19th in Sacramento and runs into April visiting major U.S. markets like Seattle, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Canadian shows are planned for Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal. Joining the tour in support will be special guests Stand Atlantic and Tom The Mail Man.

Mod Sun released his fourth studio album 'Internet Killed the Rockstar' on February 12th, 2021 via Big Noise Music Group. The new album reached #21 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and features a guest appearance by his partner Avril Lavigne on the track 'Flames' . The same year, the rap rocker launched his Internet Killed the Rockstar Tour with support from Girlfriends and Tyler Posey. Back in 2018, his Smile Machine Tour was joined by Caskey , Chxpo , Jimmy Bennett, Lostinvegas and Forgetbrennan.

Little Known Facts About MODSUN – A Fan’s Guide

The name on his Instagram is Modern Sunshine. But according to his Wikipedia, Derek Ryan Smith (born March 10, 1987), is known professionally as Mod Sun. Stylized as MOD SUN or MODSUN, it is an acronym standing for “Movement on Dreams, Stand under None”. He is an American musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, author, painter, and poet. Recently, he’s also put on the hat of video director and producer. You might find him rapping, singing, writing lyrics, or playing drums, because he’s a multi-talented powerhouse.

Raised by his mother and sister in Minnesota, Derek Smith grew up unafraid of showing emotion. And that makes a lot of difference in his art. His early influences were emo bands like Blink 182 and Fall Out Boy. 

During high school he joined a band called The Semester as the drummer and was in love with music, wanting to continue with the band after graduation. Unfortunately the band had other plans and fired him. He joined two other bands, touring and gigging with them for a few years before deciding to go solo.  He published the non-fiction book Did I Ever Wake Up? In 2012. Then by 2015, the same year as his debut album, he published the poetry book, My Dear Pink.  

MODSUN’s debut album, Look Up, was released on March 10, 2015. It peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. On March 10, 2017, his second studio album, Movie, was released. It peaked at #16 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. His third studio album BB was released on November 10, 2017 and spawned the single “#noshirton”.  In 2018, he published another poetry book – So Long Los Angeles. 

Derek has been making music for over 15 years. He has multiple mix tapes, extended plays, and of course he’s now on his 4th studio album.  He began his career in post-hardcore bands, then moved on to rapping in a style he refers to as “hippie hop” – rap and hip-hop, but with a happier vibe. 

This man is not just a musician, but a poet and a lyricist . He also is influenced by poets. It was poetry that helped get him to change his life – one by making him have the courage to sing and another to help him put down his addictions. 

He’s been through the ringer, addled by drugs and alcohol, oversharing on social media, his relationships on full broadcast. This musician takes responsibility for his losses and triumphs but is an adamant believer in not giving up and being willing to make the proper changes.

He says that his music has gotten better and better since deciding to quit drugs and alcohol over a year ago. In an interview with Metro.co.uk, he stated: 

“The fact is that I don’t drink and do drugs anymore, so I’m not going to make a song that says let’s go out and get f**ked up on the Sunset Strip. I don’t care if that might be a hit or not, I’m not going to personally put that out because it doesn’t reflect my life right now. I have songs on this album that are celebrating sobriety and I’ve never done that before.”

MODSUN believes this new way of life also goes along with the theme of reinventing what it is to be a rock star. He’s in many ways the opposite of the older version of the rockstar, and that’s exactly what the world needs. 

STYLE AND INFLUENCE

He combines pop, hip hop, rock, and electronic music in a unique way that pays homage to his rock beginnings in Minnesota, setting the stage for a new sound in alternative music. His use of deeply personal lyrics tells relatable stories about love, loss, addiction and rebirth. 

He wants to revisit the magic of when music was more than electronic beats from a synthesizer. MODSUN has let it be known that he wants to inspire others from a background filled with hardship. He wants them to know they can overcome and be something. 

“I watched Internet change music. I watched it first-hand – I was there for Myspace, I was there for MP3.com, I was there for Napster, I was there for dial up internet – I watched internet kill the rockstar and now I’m ready to watch it be reborn.”

He’s said that a moment of epiphany was when he was listening to Bob Dylan, trying to decide what he could do with his life. He realized Dylan never had an amazing voice but was writing rhymes and put it together to compare it to rap. And so, he got into rap and hip-hop, but marketed it with a happier vibe. 

COLLABORATIONS & CONNECTIONS

Throughout his prolific career, he has been immersed in the LA scene working closely with artists such as Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear, & G-Eazy while simultaneously collaborating with some of the biggest names in rap, like ScHoolboy Q and Nipsey Hussle. However, since releasing his alternative anthems, I Remember Way Too Much and Stay Away ft Machine Gun Kelly & Goody Grace, he has received co-signs from some of the biggest names in rock and roll like John Feldmann and Travis Barker. 

He’s been friends with Machine Gun Kelly for over a decade, and sees him as a mentor and his brother. Kelly encouraged him to chase his dream of actually singing on an album. 

On his new album, there are two collaborations. One with the rapper Gashi. Also, he recently released a single from that album in which he collaborated with Avril Lavigne – “Flames”. It has garnered over 5 million views on YouTube after only being there for 2 weeks.

Mod Sun says he’s ‘grateful’ to have ‘real’ friends as ex Avril Lavigne reportedly dating Tyga

Singer Mod Sun says he is grateful for those closest to him after recent reports of his ex-girlfriend Avril Lavigne dating Tyga .

On Monday night (6 March), the “Girlfriend” singer, 38, and 33-year-old “Taste” rapper Tyga were seen kissing outside a party at Paris Fashion Week, sparking rumours that the pair are together.

That same day, Mod Sun posted a tweet stating that he is “grateful” for his “real friends”.

He wrote: “I’m so grateful to have real friends who will sit on the phone with me for 2 hours.

“If you got those people in your life, do not let them go,” he added.

It comes weeks after representatives for Lavigne confirmed that the pair, who were reportedly engaged, had split . On Monday (21 February), representatives for Lavigne confirmed the news to Page Six .

However, the news appeared to have come as a surprise to Mod Sun, with his representative telling People at the time: “They were together and engaged as of three days ago when Mod left for tour so if anything has changed that’s news to him.”

Recent reports have suggested that Lavigne and Mod Sun – real name Derek Ryan Smith – have broken up and reunited several times over the last few months, although it is unclear what issues they have been facing.

On Wednesday 1 March, Mod Sun appeared to address the breakup, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram writing about how his life had “completely changed” in the space of a week.

“In one week, my entire life completely changed… I just know there’s a plan for it all. I’ll keep my head up + always listen to my heart, even when it feels broken,” he captioned a photograph of himself wearing a white vest.

“Being surrounded by love every night on tour has been an absolute blessing. I have the best friends in the entire world, thanks for always having my back. See you on stage.”

The couple met after collaborating on a song together and were romantically linked in February 2021 after they were seen leaving a restaurant together in Los Angeles.

They have appeared on the red carpet at several events together since then. Lavigne also starred in Mod Sun’s music video for his 2021 single “Flames”.

Lavigne was previously married to Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger from 2013 to 2015. Before that, she was married to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley from 2006 to 2009.

Tyga previously dated Kylie Jenner on and off between 2014 and 2018. Back in 2010, Lavigne dated Brody Jenner, who is Kylie’s brother (both are the children of Caitlin Jenner).

The Independent has contacted Lavigne and Mod Sun’s representatives for comment.

Mod Sun Says He'll 'Listen' to His Heart 'Even When It Feels Broken' After Avril Lavigne Split

Earlier this month, sources told PEOPLE that Mod Sun and Avril Lavigne called off their engagement after two years together

Mod Sun is focusing on the future after calling off his engagement to Avril Lavigne .

The musician, 35, reflected on his tumultuous week — which saw him and Lavigne end their relationship 10 months after getting engaged — in an Instagram post that said he was working on healing his heartbreak.

"In 1 week my entire life completely changed…I just know there's a plan for it all," he wrote. "I'll keep my head up + always listen to my heart, even when it feels broken 💔"

Mod, who is currently on tour, said that performing each night for fans has helped him stay positive.

"Being surrounded by love every night on tour has been an absolute blessing," he wrote. "I have the best friends in the entire world, thanks for always having my back. See you on stage."

The pop-punk rocker (whose real name is Derek Smith) shared a series of performance photos and videos alongside his message, starting with a stoic-faced mirror selfie.

A source told PEOPLE last week that he and Lavigne, 38, "have been on and off for the past two months, but are no longer together as a couple."

A rep for Mod Sun told PEOPLE in a statement that the musician was blindsided by the end of their relationship: "They were together and engaged as of three days ago when Mod left for tour so if anything has changed that's news to him. Mod will be performing tonight in Portland at The Hawthorne Theater."

Last week, TMZ published photos of Lavigne hugging rapper Tyga after sharing a meal at Nobu. Though the images sparked dating rumors, a source told PEOPLE that the two are "genuinely friends and nothing more," and that "there was no third party involved in the split."

Mod Sun and Lavigne met in January 2021 and released the collaborative single "Flames" the same month. They were first romantically linked the following month and got engaged in Paris in April 2022.
