I was with others, and for the most part, we kept in a group. We stayed on the beaten path and visited the shops, had lunch and some in our group snorkelled on the beach.

Everyone we encountered was friendly, and when we had questions, they were helpful. I did not once feel afraid or unsafe during my time onshore.

That being said, myself and the group I was with followed the recommendations for visiting the port and our time on shore was enjoyable.

Because the Costa Maya area is so sparsely populated , the local port authorities developed along the last decade an excellent cruise terminal with all services and amenities for passengers, lots of entertainment, bars, restaurants, pools, and great shopping.

But the Costa Maya cruise port is also the gateway to the lovely beaches of Mahahual and spectacular Mayan ruins like Chacchoben, Kohunlich, Dzibanche, and Kinichná.

Mayá, the Lost Mayan Kingdom Theme Waterpark, is within walking distance of the cruise terminal in Costa Maya, and the Maya Chan Beach (an all-inclusive private beach resort) is a 20-minute drive south. These attractions are between 2 miles (3.2 km) and 100 miles (160 km) from the cruise port terminal.

Costa Maya is a major cruise port of call in the Western Caribbean itineraries during the Fall-Winter season, with as many as 1.5 million passengers and over 500 cruise ships visits in 2019.

The cruise port in Costa Maya has a very appealing character. The port area is neat and well maintained. On the whole, Costa Maya is very safe . The local population is very friendly but not pushy and speaks English reasonably well. For those cruising with families, there are lots of things to do . Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties will find it easy to wander around in Costa Maya on their own.

How to explore Costa Maya on a cruise

Cruise passengers wishing to discover famous Mayan Ruins like Chacchoben should look into booking shore excursions, be it with your cruise ship or with local tour operators. For those who want to enjoy an all-inclusive beach, it is advisable to book a day pass.

Within walking distance of the cruise pier, there is a run-down but intriguing Mayan Museum and, of course, all the attractions in the Cruise Terminal. There are three possible ways to discover and enjoy a day at the cruise port of Costa Maya:

Where is Costa Maya cruise port

Bathed by the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Costa Maya is on the East coast of the Yucatan peninsula near the south border of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo with Belize. The cruise terminal is close by the village of Nuevo Mahahual (with a tinny population of 920) Cozumel cruise port is 128 miles (206 km) to the north, and Belize City cruise port is 77 miles (144 km) to the south.

Other popular cruise ports in the Western Caribbean itineraries are also within a night sail away from Costa Maya, such as Roatán , 182 miles (293 km), Harvest Caye, 158 miles (255 km), and Grand Cayman 420 miles (675 km).

Ships dock on a medium-size cruise purposely built port with T-shaped piers and quays for up to four cruise ships to moor. Whatever you decide to do, all cruise travelers will have to pass by the terminal building unless you stay onboard.

The entrance to the terminal with its massive Mayan replica door at the end of a perpendicular pier to the coast is impossible to miss. At a 90 degree angle to this pier is what used to be the primary docking pier.

The perpendicular pier to the coast is rather long. However, there is a free trolley for those with walking difficulties or not willing to walk, which is particularly convenient if cruising with young children.

The pier trolley travels on a continuous loop . But you should be prepared for a bit of a wait if four mega-ships are in port, which only seldom happens. The pier trolley must not be confused with the shuttle , which runs between the cruise terminal and Mahahual.

As you get close to the entrance to the Terminal, you will see the Tour Dispatch area and a late minute tour desk to book an excursion if you haven't booked one already.

Cruise passengers will also find in the terminal many activities, diverse entertainment, and shopping (more about all these below). And the following services and amenities:

Shopping and attractions at the cruise terminal

Once inside the terminal, shops are the first thing you will come across. On the left-hand side, craft markets sell all sorts of souvenirs. On your right, the typical duty-free shops you would expect in any Caribbean cruise port, such as the ubiquitous Diamonds International and its sister Tanzanite International.

But there are also well-known Mexican stores selling Tequila or Boots like Veari and Rogers Boots. Cruise tip: cigars and tequila are the best buy (quality/price) in Costa Maya.

The Dolphin Discovery , with pools where shows and swimming with the aquatic mammals are the main features, is among the top attractions in the Costa Maya cruise terminal.

The already mentioned large saltwater swimming pool bordered by pool bars is a major highlight of the cruise terminal. But there are also many other attractions such as:

• Callejón del Sapo: traditional market, bars and restaurants
• Aviarius: hanging bridges trail with exotic birds
• Kakaw: chocolate factory and tasting
• La Consentida: tequila museum and tasting
• Papantla's: traditional artistic flying show
• Mayan Healing: pre-hispanic rituals and spa
• El Faro (restaurant): grilled food with sea views
• Flavors of Mexico (restaurant): traditional mexican dishes
• Cantina Latina (restaurant): mexican cuisine in a party atmosphere

Local Transportation, tours, taxis, buses and golf cars

The terminal has two exits into a large parking area - this is where shore excursions tour buses do park. But it is also where you will find other local transportation.

A local tourist booth offers different packages for Mahahual's beach clubs, including umbrellas, lounge chairs, showers, all sorts of water sports, and, obviously, bars (some serving light fares as well).

If none of these packages appeal, or if you just want to spend a couple of hours at the beach in Mahahual , it is pretty easy to get on the shuttle , take a taxi or a golf car to look around Mahahual before deciding where to lay your towel and what to do.

In this large parking area, you will also find a shuttle bus to Mahahual ($3.00 per person each way), taxis (around the same price per person), and Golf Cars (starting at $30 per hour) if you wish to explore the area on your own. Although the golf cars may not be available in the parking area of the cruise terminal, check this link - Mayahual Golf Carts - to double-check availability and eventually book an alternative golf car rental.

What's outside the cruise terminal

There is only one exit out of the gated cruise terminal's parking area. The gates open into a street with a central pedestrian corridor lined by buildings, which not long ago had a bustling activity.

Unfortunately, in 2007 and 2012, two hurricanes devastated Costa Maya, and these buildings are still waiting for restoration. Cruise passengers booked with online tour operators will meet their guides along this street outside the gated area of the cruise terminal.

The Mayan Museum is also on this street (on the right-hand side). This small free museum has a rather shabby entrance, but the interior displays interesting jade exhibits and historical boards for those wishing to learn more about this pre-Columbian civilization..

Right after the museum, there is a taxi stop and a Mayan pyramid replica that many cruise visitors like to climb for a photo memory . Some cruisers and staff say that the taxi stand rates are better at this stop than at the terminal but the Editor hasn't found this to be 100% accurate.

Things to do in Costa Maya cruise port

Besides the wonderful Terminal, Puerto Costa Maya (as it is known by locals and cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Celebrity) is one of the ports in the West Caribbean itineraries that offers a great variety of experiences.

For those looking to enjoy a relaxing day basking in the sun, there are pristine beaches ; and if more into active pursuits, snorkeling, scuba, catamaran sailing, fishing or jet skiing are available.

A couple of spectacular Mayan ruins are highlights close by - in particular Chacchoben . If cruising with children cruise passengers can enjoy zip line courses and water slides at the Mayá, Lost Mayan Kingdom Theme Water Park, close by.

• Kohunlich, Dzibanche and Kinichná Mayan Ruins: frequent cruisers that have been in Costa Maya repeatedly and visited Chacchoben, should look into booking an excursion to one of the three other Mayan ruins close to Costa Maya cruise port.

This is lined on the land side by bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, a couple of hotels, water sports shops (fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, catamaran, jet skiing and so on); and one of the Editor's favorite bookshop in the Caribbean where no-shoes and no-shirts are welcomed.

On the beachside of the Malecón, the cruise passenger will find one beach club after another with chairs, umbrellas, bars, and water sports. Some also offer massages. At the northern tip of the beach, there is a Señor Frogs .

You should have in mind that Mahahual is a very, very laid back sort of beach and that no one is in a rush to offer any service in this small village. Cruise tip: join the flow (or lack of) and look at leisure for whatever you feel like doing with no pressure.

Auto theft from foreign tourists is common here. To avoid this risk park car only clearly visible parking areas, at night park vehicle on a security guard and use at least on anti-thief protection by car.

No, Not Safe, over 200 murder’s this year alone 2021, its July. Police keep asking for bribes for traffic violations, they make up the violation. Extortion of cash is gained.

Avoid Visiting Ensenada in 2022

I agree, It is listed as a High Crime region and they have failed police operations. They drive around in Big Trucks, checking out the chicks, but fail to catch very few criminals. They keep demanding extortion of cash from anyone. If you have a problem or crime, they will not investigate it unless you pay them. Do you all get this? They don’t give a damn about tourists, only your money so read the rules by our USA govt about travelling to Mexico first before you go. The ctiy Council me3mbers and Mayor ignore this request for a hearing into corruption of police. They allow them to continue to ask for these bribes, no one stops them at all. President Obrador lied to the people when he said he will act upon this type of corruption, well he has failed us here.

You’re not good with stats. Baltimore with the same population ended 337 homicides and St Louis per 100,000 was higher. Also was Detroit.

Encinada is definitely not safe. People get killed at the bars all the time at least once a month. Scams are super prevalent. Cruiseport village marina is a security joke where things are stolen and then camera footage is protected by staff. As a white American, you are ONLY welcome if you are spending money and even then you are not even considered a guest. During the day on “gringo gulch” the 10 blocks close to the marina is fine. I walk the streets during the day but I also in 220 pounds in covered in tattoos. In fact the few times I did go out at night to get some food and walk five blocks away from the marina I was told by locals that I am insane for doing that.

Ensenada it’s not safe at all, transportation like Uber taxis and others have connection with kidnappers ,scammers, slot a shooting in a public touristics áreas, I don’t recommend but if you visit Ensenada always wacht your backs ,don’t drink a lot and don’t trust no body, I k now Ensenada very well ,by my owned experience I can tell

What year did you go? I had a completely different experience in Ensenada. I mean you have to be cautious no matter where you go. Even here in the US there are people who will try to take advantage of out-of-country tourists. I have seen it first hand. People can be real nasty. I do agree with not drinking in excess though. You don’t want to do that anywhere while on vacation really.

corrupt police

completely sober and walking to the bank from the tourist area around 8:30 PM. A white pickup with 2 police stopped me and asked for identification. one stayed in front of me while the other was in back of me. the one in back took my billfold and said he needed to check for drugs. the one in front kept asking if I was drinking, etc. They gave me back my billfold and said I could go. I opened my billfold to count my money and see if anything was missing. I told them $400 pesos were missing. They didn’t agree and asked if I wanted to ride down to the police station with them. I was glad they didn’t clean me out and I was out about $40.00. I used to go down on the Baja regularly, but since then, I never returned.

You make you a target

Four hundred pesos is $20 usd. I have lived in Ensenada for 14 years. Yes I have been pulled over by the police but I did break a law. I was able to save money by paying a bribe. It is a great discount program.

As for safety, stupid is as stupid does. Walking in unlit areas, bad idea, going out alone also not smart. The big no getting drunk in a bar, a big red light for problems. I look at things in this light, I don’t worry about a person coming into a store with automatic weapons shooting at people here living in Mexico. USA scares me. Here you make yourself a target. Don’t push American wealth into a face of a local. No fancy clothes, jewelry or a thick wallet. Stay in a group of trusted people and enjoy.

Ensenada is a dump. Locals and criminals who got deported from the US are working together trying to scam you. If you’re not a local, you have a target on your back. The local police are part of the scam as well. Big time tourist trap. They DON’T want you there, only your CASH. Only fools will think otherwise.

I have a friend that goes to ensenada all the time. He has a boat in a marina there. He tells me he has a great time. He walks around at night all the time to go to restaurants. He did get stopped by the police on the way down once and they stole something out of the back of his truck. Other than that he has had no problems. The worst part is coming back and crossing the border. I just completed my interview for my global entry pass card so it should be easier for me.

Scammers Galore

Came on a cruise Feb 2023, took shuttle from port, did La Bufadora, city tour, and ATV tour. They tell you one price and then when you’re ready to leave it’s suddenly $20 more…should have been my first clue. First stop was to the owners house to drop off a bucket (can’t make this up). Finished tour and was told I needed to pay extra $10 because I kept the driver all day. I complied because I was alone at night on a side street with owner and 5 other guys. I’m 6’4” 265 and can handle my own but not worth it to argue. Initial shuttle ticket was supposed to include return to port with shuttle running “every 5 minutes” until 9:00 pm. They were nowhere to be found by 6:30. Every place they take you they get a kickback, which is fine, but I would rather go on my own next time and be able to choose where to go, not just who they have deals with. Typical tourist shops with “name brand” bags, etc. at “discounts”. Bought a bag for $75…first quoted at $350 lol! Probably could’ve got on Amazon for $30 but I need something to carry around for the day. Felt mostly safe, obviously some no go zones. Overall had fun but if I did again, sad to say would absolutely NOT do a tour with the locals as they’re mostly all little bait and switch operations.

I’ve cruised into Cozumel on both Carnival and NCL well over 15 times and never had any problems. I find the locals to be very helpful. I’m sure there are incidents of petty theft, but your cruise line is probably costing you more on average with their nickel-and-dime fees. I say this, and I really enjoy cruising.

Going on a Mexico Riviera cruise with Carnival Splendor. Curious about people's opinions on securing excursions and safety in the ports.

We are going to the following ports:

Cabo San Lucas

Puerto Vallarta

Are these ports safe to adventure alone with a family? Would it be preferable to book excursions instead of going at it on our own?

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

If you look down the board, there are regular and frequent discussions about Mexican port safety. Note that the cruise lines will not put their pax in danger zones. 

Additionally, every port you mention is frequently discussed here for options of activities. Some a ship's excursion might be a better idea, others can easily be done on your own. It can also depend on exactly what you are interested in doing.

Generally Mexico is no more dangerous than any large city. The headline news violence is almost never involving tourists or tourist areas. When this becomes an issue, the cruise lines quit going to that port. For example, Acapulco is not a port on your cruise for that reason. We have been to all three of your ports many times, and on land vacations. In fact, we will be in Cabo on a land vacation in March.

We have done these ports on multiple cruises as well as land based trips.  Like travel anywhere a little common sense is a big safety factor. Huge numbers of your fellow countrymen, especially from the frigid middle, winter over along the Mexican Riviera and it often appears like all of Canada is in Mexico in January and February.

How to book will really depend on what you want to see and do.

Can you fault them.  My DW spent a few formative years in Calgary.  Let’s just say we never visit the relatives in Winter.

Whether you need a formal tour or not depends on what you r family wants to do.

I would not go on a jungle zip-line adventure on my own.  Nor on some kind of sailing or scuba adventure.  It is probably ok to do it, but I would worry about the taxi/boat breaking down and stranding us in the middle of nowhere, making us late for the ship's sailing.  Just paranoia on my part, but I'd pay the extra to be part of the ship's excursion, where the ship has to wait in the very unlikely event of trouble!

But for a city tour, I'd hire a van and driver at the port and pay for a two hour tour.  Or, for example in Mazatlán, I'd hire a golf cart to take us to the Cathedral.  I'd then explore the Cathedral and the Market, and hire another golf cart to go to Zona Dorado.  Then, after exploring there, a third golf cart back to the ship.

I'd use the ship's excursions only for things I'd worry about a breakdown far from help.  A cab breaks down on the usual route to the Malecon, there will be another cab available to rescue you!

Not sure where this idea comes from that the ship  has to wait for you , if you are on a ship's excursion. It doesn't. In most cases it will, but there are situations (tidal conditions, for example) where it won't.

Speaking for Puerto Vallarta . . .  We have just returned from a month long land vacation in Vallarta (our 19th year). We stay at the Sheraton which is a 15 minute walk north of El Centro.  We walk everywhere, at all hours, and use public transportation quite often.

Safety: Renting an ATV or dune buggy and heading into the hills, on your own, is not recommended. Wandering the city on your own doesn't present a real danger. Your greatest hazard is the surface you walk on. Sidewalks are often cracked and uneven. Covers to utility service valves are occasionally missing. Curb heights can be quite high and street surfaces uneven (cobblestone).  Cell phone "zombies" blindly plod along and create a moving hazard.

Beyond this, Vallarta offers opportunities that never grow old and can be enjoyed on your own. Some must be booked through the ship due to contract obligation between the tour providers and the cruise industry. Virtually all excursions offered by Vallarta Adventures must be booked through the ship if you are a cruise ship passenger.  I believe the popular pirate ship excursion is also a ship-booked activity.  Beyond that, just about anything that you can think of can be booked or done on your own.

I believe Splendor stays in Vallarta overnight and this will offer you opportunities that most cruisers can't experience. Vallarta is a foodies paradise but most of the city's good restaurants don't open until 6 PM.

I agree with abut everything you say expect that Mexico is the just as dangerous as any large cities.  This just isn't true even if it is out of sight to the tourist community.  Mexicans themselves don't like to talk about their security challenges with tourists as they don't want to scare off their paycheck.

Yoiu are comparing a country with cities!  Not all of Mexico is safe, but also not all of Mexico is unsafe! We have traveled a lot in Mexico and in many parts of this beautiful country without any problems. We soon  will again have a long winterstay of some  months in Puerto Vallarta as we do since some years . I drive our car here, (and I donot look mexican being dutch) we shop local, we eat in restaurants where only mexicans come, we walk the streets etc. Let me tell you PV is one of the safest places we have been. This as long as one doesnot drink too much, doesnot involve in drugs, leave valuables at home, you will enjoy this part of Mexico.

I try to raise people's awareness of Mexico to see beyond the resorts and tourists zones to understand the plight of Mexicans and their lack of security and their poor governmental institutions for the many of their citizenry.  I have seen fist hand impact of insecurity on people's lives in Mexico including murder kidnapping, extortion, etc  and it is a tragedy.

Since this board is for cruisers who are in various towns just for a few hours and often stay within a few miles from the ship they hardly ever or even never will be confronted with kidnapping, extortion etc.  Also those bad things most of the times are related to people within the drugs scene not to tourists.

For your information on January 2 there were 3 large cruiseships docked in Puerto Vallarta. Regal Princess, Eurodam and Carnival Splendor. They brought over 8000 passangers plus a lot of crew into town without any problem.

I am glad you have not had any personal problems.  Of course bad things happen everywhere, they are just much more likely to occur in places like Mexico with poor government, institutionalized corruption (going to be worse with AMLO) and rampant organized criminal gangs.

BTW - Did you see AMLO wants to create yet another "police" force of 50k to go after crime.  Pena Nieto tried the same with his "gendarmerie" idea with no success.

Let us wait/see what AMLO can do with what he promised. In the past he did a rather good job in Mexico City, but there is a major difference between being in charge of a city or a country. It depends also how politicians, police etc. will work with or against him. Pena Nieto I think disappointed  because he was much involved with his rich friends and some corrupt politicians. Also maybe he didnot take enough action against the drugproblems. Major factor unfortunately is as long there is demand there will be supply.

Knowing the problems Colombia had in the past and is doing so much better now there still is hope for Mexico.

Anyway we are looking forward to our winterstay in Puerto Vallarta.

Great picture! Although I image there was one problem that day....the lines in Wal-mart.  😂

Indeed and also inside the Galeria Mall at the foodcourt with many crewmembers using the free wifi!

Since he is in office for just 1 month one cannot expect any miracles whatever way, good or bad.  As I mentioned before there are places that are unsafe, but also places that are still safe.

So,  do you know where the Sinaloa drug cartel is active?  And  has it affected recent tourism in Cabo, P.V.,  Manzanillo, or Matzalan?  Those of the ports of call on Princess we will be calling on next week.  Im keeping my fingers crossed we won’t be caught in the middle of crossfire between rival drug cartels.

I recently read this in a report from 2017:

“Though violence around Los Cabos has largely avoided tourist areas, they have not totally been spared. During the first weekend of August, at least five gunmen  attacked  a group on a beach, killing three men, severely wounding a man and a woman, and forcing authorities to evacuate the beach, which was crowded with tourists.”

As far as I know it is partly ready, but the plan like making an aquarium not. I am not yet in Vallarta, but will know more in about 10 days.
