Top 5 questions about travel insurance

When you travel outside your home province or territory, even if you're still in Canada, there are limits on how much your government health insurance plan will pay. Costs that may not be covered include air and ground ambulance, emergency dental treatment and prescription drug expenses. Travel insurance can help with these costs, so it makes sense to have it whether you're visiting another part of Canada or another part of the world.

We can top up travel insurance offered by another insurer, adding extra days to your current coverage. You are responsible for ensuring that your current coverage is in force and allows top-ups. Your top-up coverage is subject to CoverMe ® Travel Insurance's terms and conditions.

For single-trip plans, you can add extra days of coverage while you're travelling provided that there has been:

  • No event that has resulted or may result in a claim against the policy, and
  • No change in your health status

You must call 1-800-268-3763 before your coverage expires and pay the appropriate premium.

For multi-trip plans, it's best to add extra days of coverage before you leave home. Simply get a top-up up to the maximum allowed by your government health insurance plan. If you need to add extra days of coverage while you're travelling, call 1-800-268-3763 and we will do our best to help you.

Frequently asked questions

For the best experience, please use up-to-date versions of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge when purchasing Insurance for Costco members.

Global Affairs Canada states: "Do not rely on your provincial or territorial health plan to cover costs if you get sick or are injured while abroad. Out-of-country health care can be costly, and your government health plan may not cover any medical expenses abroad. It is your responsibility to seek information from your provincial or territorial health authority and to obtain supplementary travel insurance and understand the terms of your policy."

You can opt to purchase coverage for the entire time you are away from your province of residence or just for the portion of your trip that is away from Canada. In other words, the effective date of coverage can be either the last day you are in your province of residence or the last day you are in Canada. As government health insurance plans vary among the provinces and may not provide emergency return home benefits, you should consider coverage for the full length of your trip.

Government health insurance plans may have limits on the reimbursement of the emergency medical expenses incurred while in another province. For example, air and ground ambulance costs, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered outside your province of residence. For maximum protection, you should purchase additional medical coverage even while travelling within Canada.

Yes. Travel Insurance for Costco Members allows top up coverage of another insurer's plan. You are responsible for ensuring that your current coverage is in force and allows top-up. Your top-up coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the Travel Insurance plan.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your existing plan permits top-ups.

If you are already on your trip, you can extend coverage by calling Customer Service at 1-866-707-4922 provided there has been no event that has resulted or may result in a claim against the policy and there has been no change in your health status. In addition, you must request the extension before your coverage expires and pay the appropriate premium. Extension of your coverage is subject to approval.

If you have a Multi-Trip Plan, you must top-up your coverage before you leave home, by purchasing a Top-Up plan for the additional number of days beyond the duration provided by your Multi-Trip Plan to the maximum allowed by your Canadian government health insurance plan. To top-up your coverage after you leave home, you must call us at 1-866-707-4922 .

Run from Manulife

I was shopping around for travel Insurance, Costco offers a discount to card holders via manulife. $85 for a single trip 5million coverage.

I could not get much information regarding the details of the coverage. When I called the first person was friendly but didn't offer much help and offered to send me the policy which I already had.

I called back and got another rep, she was BEYOND rude and annoyed. She kept saying "I dont know what else to tell you, the first person already sent you the policy". She was becoming increasingly annoyed and hostile, raised her voice and started talking over me. So aggressive! Exactly 8pm, she hung up on me.

Don’t trust.

I always try to secure travel or any trip by buying insurance, on my last trip I was offered with all inclusive Manulife insurance for air Canada package and was in Mexico. I slipped and got hurt and was rushed to hospital. Thank God no feature but severe joint injury and dr advise me for a very limited mobility. DR said you can travel by air on wheel chair assistance. I contacted Manulife Global assistance and it was very disappointing to know that they can’t help me get out of Puerto Vallarta, as airline refused to change my date. I stayed on bed for 5 days and all my plan was messed up. This insurance company and service quality is next to none. They never leave any phone number to contact and not even replying. Be careful.

No Complaints

I expected the worse judging by many of the reviews. I had to cancel the trip my wife and I had planned due to a sudden illness. They outlined what documents I needed to supply to them which I did. I could not get a medical certificate for two months waiting to see a specialist but they held the claim open. Once I sent them the final paperwork, the reimbursement was in my bank account within two weeks. I have never had to use my cancellation insurance but it was very straightforward. Thanks Manulife.

I would not recommend them to anyone

Please don’t waste your money. It’s a scam. They are happy to take your money but when you have emergency and open a claim, they will make sure you get nothing. The process is painful and they will do anything to not pay for cover. I’m surprised they are still in this business. Please save your money and time. Find a trusted travel insurance

If I could put -5, I would

In February 2022, I ended up in Ukraine, I had an all-inclusive multi-trip policy from Manulife. In general, my return flight on February 27 was cancelled. I was stuck in a war-torn country with no way to leave there for 3 months. During that time, I repeatedly turned to Monulife for help, although I rarely had such an opportunity due to the lack of communication and the Internet. As a result, after long minutes of waiting, I received another excuse. After returning to Canada, I tried for 6 months to get at least some kind of compensation, but in the end I gave up this activity, as each time I experienced a negative experience. In general, I was not reimbursed for anything.

POOR SERVICE

These people are quick to take your money and avoid payment of claims. It has been almost five months since I filed my claim and to date even after more than twenty follow up calls / numerous emails they still have not paid! Staff memeber are horrible to deal with - no empathy - and claim they are "too busy". You work and save hard to afford a vacation and when you are forced to cancel beacuse your mother dies days before the trip - they take five months to run you around! Unacceptable!

No resolution after two months of inquiry

Manulife representative was not clear in the requirement that each person (husband and wife) must both register for Flight Assist independently on their site. Therefore, when flights were cancelled, only one individual received the refund. Two months later and Manulife representative not rectifying the issue. They make millions of dollars and are refusing to issue $140. Poor service and customer support. Will not use again.

I received $625 so far I am still expected a total of around $3,700 CAD.

I'll need some explaintions. I'll need some explainations.

I was expecting over $3700 because I was hopsitalised in Glasgow (Scotland) for 6 days due to COVID. They were saying in the policy that they reimbursed transportation (plane, taxis, etc, hotels, starting with the days of your hospitalisation) , hotels, etc...

They wrote to me today saying that they were reimboursing me $625.00.

You can be sure that I will call them tomorrow for sure.

UPDATE: Monday January 8th 2024. Without me getting involved at all, I learn this morning that my claim / case has been escalated, that there was an error!

UPDATE: Wednesday January 10th 2024. Manulife sent me an e-mail telling me that there were some dates missing. There is no date missing whatsoever, I was so very careful at checking everything sent numerous times. This would have been my 3rd sending them things, and every single time, I have to send it (due to the confidentiality of the things sent) $16 (CAD). Sorry Manulife, be very careful and check thouroughly things that customers send you before asking them to send them again ! I talked to a guy at the Montréal's office named Philippe, he told me that it was up to the travel agency to pay for (at least) my plane tickets and hotels after my hospitalisation, that the travel agency had to call Manulife to "make arrangements" etc... This is never the case, travel agencies do NOT call insurance companies . NEVER. It is up to insurance companies to deal entirely with claims / cases. So I am not taking care of this new e-mail sent requesting dates, as I just wrote, they have everything. The claim / case could take up to 6 to 8 weeks before I get more money back from them.

They are very communicative when receiving your money, then they disappear when you file a claim

Submitted claim in June, it's now December. Every time I call Global Excel, the claims management department, I'm told, "your case manager will reach out to you" and of course they never do. Most recently I managed to get a firm commitment that "a decision will be reached within 30 days and if not, they will reach out with an update". Of course that was 35 days ago at this point. It really feels like they are hoping I'll forget.

Terrible, terrible experience

I submitted a medical claim in April 2022 and still December 2023 it has not been resolved. After many hours on the phone and on hold, many emails - they Manulife thru Global Excel - send me a letter asking me to submit all the same claim information I sent a year ago, multiple times. They created a new claim number and when I asked an agent she said they will 'move' all my submission documents to the new claim, but they still need me to submit all the same information. It is ridiculous and so frustrating. This is the works company in Canada and if I can give it a negative 10 review I would do it. Avoid Manulife, avoid Global Excel. Bd service, waste of time.

Visiting another country or province without travel insurance can be a costly mistake. Indeed, did you know that an overnight stay in a United States hospital can exceed $14,000 CAD? Some countries might even refuse to help you if you are unable to prepay for treatment.

Travel insurance is a necessity when you are away from home . It guarantees your ability to access and pay for health care, if and when you need it. Beyond medical emergencies, travel insurance can also help with flight issues and lost luggage, amongst other things.

Manulife launches a two-year strategic charity partnership with mind hk.

Key initiatives aim to address misconceptions towards mental health and  empower sustained health and well-being

HONG KONG , May 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Manulife Hong Kong today announced a two-year strategic partnership with Mind HK, a Hong Kong -based mental health charity, to raise public awareness of the importance of mental health and to influence the development of mental health support services in Hong Kong . This partnership will help advance one of Manulife's Impact Agenda commitments to empower sustained health and well-being. Over the course of the partnership, the two organizations will work together to organize a series of awareness events, anti-stigma programs, and ongoing professional training initiatives aimed at advocating for improved mental health support within the local community.

Mental health conditions can arise from various common environmental, social, and personal stressors, such as stressful life events, illnesses, and financial difficulties . [1] It is estimated that one in seven people in Hong Kong will experience a common mental disorder at any given time [2] , yet three-quarters of those affected will not seek professional help [1] . Through this partnership, Manulife and Mind HK will collaborate to develop a series of programs designed to tackle the high prevalence of mental health issues in society.

"Manulife and Mind HK share a vision to advocate for the importance of mental health and reducing unnecessary stereotypes in the city. Collaborating with Mind HK allows us to increase awareness of mental health and improve accessibility to mental health support within the community. Our commitment to the city and its people goes beyond financial well-being; we also place significant emphasis on promoting their mental and physical wellness, thereby bringing our 'body-mind-wealth' customer proposition to life. By leveraging Mind HK's expertise and networks, we hope to change public perceptions towards mental health and foster a more inclusive society in Hong Kong ," said Patrick Graham , Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Hong Kong and Macau .

"This strategic partnership between Mind HK and Manulife Hong Kong is a milestone for Mind HK. It will allow us to expand and strengthen our service network to help more people in need of mental health support and also boost public awareness to improve mental health literacy levels and reduce the stigma around mental health. We look forward to joining hands with our like-minded partner to work towards our vision of ensuring no one in Hong Kong has to face a mental health problem alone," said Dr. Candice Powell , CEO of Mind HK.

The collaborated programmes set to roll out beginning in 2024 include:

Improving Access to Community Therapies (iACT®) A pioneering initiative developed by Mind HK, iACT® is a stepped care model for mental health services. Trained iACT® Wellbeing Practitioners are available to offer free, short-term, in-person, and remote support to local citizens experiencing mild to severe anxiety, mild to moderate depression, or emotional distress. With the support of Manulife, Mind HK aims to strengthen and support the network of graduated practitioners and enable them to effectively serve people in need.

Mind HK x Manulife Public Awareness Raising Events These events will feature expert speakers from clinical psychology, public health, and NGOs, as well as individuals who have firsthand experience with mental health conditions. They will come together to discuss mental health topics and share personal stories of recovery. The first event is scheduled to take place on June 21, 2024 , at Quarryside, a harbourfront community space located in Hong Kong's Quarry Bay district. During this event, Benjamin Au Yeung , a linguistic scholar-turned-TV host, will facilitate conversations on emotion management, joined by a clinical advisor and an ambassador from Mind HK.

"More Than a Label" Anti-Stigma Campaign This campaign aims to provide training for individuals who have faced mental health challenges, empowering them to become ambassadors capable of effectively sharing their personal experiences through campaigns, webpages, and social media platforms. This initiative is a collaboration with MINDSET Hong Kong and offers ambassadors the opportunity to showcase holistic representations of individuals who have triumphed over mental health issues. It aims to encourage the community to feel empowered through stories of people-in-recovery, educate the public about mental health, and raise awareness to reduce stigma.

Hong Kong Mental Health Conference 2025 This three-day international conference, entitled "Birth, Life, and Mental Health," aims to explore the evidence, psychology and cultural aspects of the entire lifespan and its relationship to mental health. The conference is expected to draw 1,000 attendee s.

Gender affirmation

On this page.

Instruction: Change of selection promptly shifts the focus to a matching heading further down, on the same page.

Supporting your employees

Everyone experiences gender in their own unique way. Some may identify as being a woman, a man, both, neither, or anywhere along the gender spectrum. A person’s gender identity may be different from the gender associated with their sex. 1

The sense of unease caused by the mismatch between one’s assigned gender and their gender identity is referred to as gender dysphoria. 2 Gender affirmation care helps affirm one’s physical appearance with the gender they identify with.

Gender affirmation coverage *

As part of our DEI benefits offering, this coverage provides gender affirming procedures, surgeries, and treatment. This inclusive benefit can be part of your organization’s full spectrum DEI strategy, helping you attract and retain talent , and supporting your employees, in order to help them bring their most authentic selves to work. 3

One or more types of  gender-affirming surgeries were associated with a  42%  reduction in psychological distress and a  44%  reduction in suicidal ideation. 4 **

  • transition-related genital and chest/breast surgeries that are not covered by the provincial/territorial health plan
  • facial feminization/masculinization surgeries
  • body feminization/masculinization surgeries (such as tracheal shave, liposuction, lipofilling)
  • vocal cord surgery
  • electrolysis or laser hair removal
  • body hair or skin graft

The gender affirmation benefit is available to employees and their covered family members as part of their benefits plan *** if they are diagnosed with gender dysphoria by their physician . The diagnosis helps the benefit go to those who need it.

We know this can be a difficult time. To provid e  employees with support, we have a dedicated team who can help them with questions about their gender affirmation coverage and the claims process.

Expenses related to the reversal of gender affirmation treatments are not covered. Standard extended health care (EHC) exclusions apply. *** To learn more, sign in to the plan member site , click the ‘My benefits’ tab, then ‘View benefits booklet’.

Inclusive support

To further support your employees, consider providing a comprehensive DEI benefits plan design and holistic care so they have access to the resources that can help them bring their most authentic selves to work:

Travel within Canada is often required to access specialized gender affirming surgical procedures. 5 Consider adding In-Canada Medical Travel benefits to cover employees’ long distance travel expenses related to health care.

Those experiencing gender dysphoria may also have symptoms of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. 6 Consider including $2,000 to $4,000/year as the combined maximum for mental health practitioners, so employees have access to emotional and psychological support.

Review your plan’s drug coverage so that employees can have access to appropriate medication and hormone therapy.

At Manulife, embracing DEI sparks innovation and makes us  better for our clients and customers. We continuously seek fresh perspectives to enhance our products and services, to help us deliver comprehensive benefits that meet the evolving needs of our diverse customer base.

Effective September 6, 2024, Gender Affirmation will be added to all EHC plans. If you have any questions or wish to opt out of this benefit (ASO & RA plans only), please contact your Manulife representative by August 1, 2024 (for opt-out requests).

*The purpose of gender affirmation coverage is related to masculinization or femininization, not elective cosmetic enhancement. All eligible services will require a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a physician. The coverage is offered based on plan availability and is subject to conditions, limitations and exclusions.

**2021 JAMA Network – a secondary analysis of data from the 2015 US Transgender Survey conducted across 50 states of 27, 715 transgender and gender diverse people. The exposure group included respondents who endorsed undergoing 1 or more types of gender-affirming surgery at least 2 years prior to submitting survey responses. The comparison group included respondents who endorsed a desire for 1 or more types of gender-affirming surgery but denied undergoing any gender-affirming surgeries. The data were analyzed between November 1, 2020, and January 3, 2021.

***Effective September 6, 2024, Gender Affirmation will be added to all EHC plans.
