Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

A valid passport, along with an onward/return ticket and sufficient funds, is required for entry. A no-cost visitor visa valid for 30 days is issued upon arrival. A Traveler Health Declaration (THD) must be filled in and submitted by all travelers travelling to and from Maldives, within 96 hours prior to their travel. You may submit the form electronically .

The  Department of Immigration and Emigration  routinely approves requests for extension of stays up to 90 days for travelers who present evidence of sufficient funds and who stay in a resort/hotel or present a letter from a local sponsor. Anyone staying more than 60 days without proper authorization faces heavy fines and deportation.

Yellow fever vaccine is required for individuals above nine months of age who are traveling to Sri Lanka from a country designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to have a risk of yellow fever transmission, including transit wait time of more than 12 hours in an airport located in such a country. For more information, please refer to WHO .

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime: Maldives has a low crime rate and crime on resort islands is rare. Valuables may be stolen when left unattended on beaches or in hotels. The penalty for drug use or possession is severe.

Demonstrations  may take place in response to political or economic issues, but primarily take place in Malé or other larger cities and are unlikely to be noticed by tourists.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the Department of State and FBI pages for information.

Technology Usage Abroad: Mobiles devices are vulnerable to compromise, theft, and physical damage anywhere in the world. Best practices prior to traveling abroad are keeping all software (operating system and apps) updated, and use virtual private network and encrypted voice over IP (VoIP) applications if possible. Make sure that all VPN/VoIP are reputable, and U.S. based. Do not connect to unknown open Wi-Fi.

GPS Navigation Apps are helpful in getting U.S. citizens around in a foreign country. Prior to using the GPS app make sure you research the route to make sure it is safe. GPS navigation apps may give you the shortest route without safety consideration.

Be cautious of using dating apps/online dating websites abroad as U.S. citizens can be targeted by scammers. Make sure to inform your friends and family of your whereabouts, meet at a well-known public location, and do not consume suspicious food or drinks. Avoid traveling alone to bars or nightclubs.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy in Colombo for assistance.

Report crimes to the local police at 119 and contact the U.S. Embassy in Colombo at +94-11-202-8500. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care ;
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police;
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent;
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion;
  • Provide a list of local attorneys;
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S. ;
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution;
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home; and
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport .

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur at all tourist facilities. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

When transiting Maldives, travelers should ensure their luggage does not contain prohibited or restricted items, which include weapons, ammunition, alcohol, pornography, and religious material offensive to Islam, among other items. In some places, it is illegal to take pictures of certain buildings.

Religious Laws : Public observance of any religion other than Islam is prohibited. Religious gatherings such as Bible study groups are prohibited; however, a family unit may practice its religion, including Bible readings, within its residence. It is against the law to invite or encourage Maldivian citizens to attend these gatherings. Offenders may face jail sentences, expulsion, and/or fines. Although Maldivian law prohibits importing “idols for religious worship,” tourists traveling to the resort islands are generally allowed to bring in items and texts used for personal religious observances.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

LGBTQI+ Travelers:   The law prohibits same-sex sexual conduct. Under the penal code, the punishment for conviction includes up to eight years’ imprisonment and 100 lashes. None of the legal provisions prohibiting discrimination covers discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity and the law does not recognize LGBTQI+ individuals, couples, and their families. See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: While in Maldives, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what you find in the United States. The Maldivian constitution provides for the rights and freedom from discrimination of persons with disabilities, and parliament passed a Disability Act in 2010. The new law requires public places such as supermarkets and parks to have facilities that will enable access for people with disabilities. Despite the law, most public places do not yet have access for the disabled, and implementation of the law may take some time.

Travelers: If you find yourself in a life-threatening situation, you should call the police immediately and follow up with a call to the U.S. Embassy in Colombo (+94-11-202-8500). We can sometimes connect you with a non-governmental organization in the Maldives that may be able to provide assistance.

If you are victimized overseas, you may be entitled to receive compensation for counseling and/or other services such as relocation back to the United States. For further information, visit the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women .

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime committed in the Maldives.

See our tips for  Women Travelers .

For Ambulance services in the Maldives, dial 102.

Ambulance services are not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except Malé/Hulhumalé. Available ambulances are not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment. Some inter-island sea ambulance service is available via the Maldivian Navy but does not serve the entire country.

We highly recommend that all travelers review the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Travelers’ Health webpage and general Traveler Advice for Maldives.

  • Review all sub-sections including the Travel Health Notices, Vaccines and Medicines, Non-Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, Stay Healthy and Safe, Healthy Travel Packing List, and After Your Trip.
  • Reasons for Travel (for example: Adventure Travel, Spring Break Travel)
  • Travelers with Special Considerations (for example: Allergies, Long-Term Travelers and Expatriates)
  • and General Tips (for example: Traveling with Medications, Travel Vaccines)

The Department of State, U.S. embassies and U.S. consulates do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

The Department of State strongly recommends supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medical Facilities: There are three large hospitals in the Malé area: ADK Hospital, Tree Top Hospital, and the government-run IGMH. Medical facilities outside Malé are limited. Hospitals and doctors typically require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. The availability of medical supplies is uneven and many common medications used in the United States are not available in Maldives; therefore, travelers should always carry any prescription medications with them.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Recommended vaccines that are specific to this region include Japanese encephalitis and typhoid (and rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis only if exposure to bats is anticipated).

Pharmaceuticals : Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments. Please visit U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Maldives Ministry of Health to ensure the medication is legal in Maldives.

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassy and Consulates.

Water Quality : You should use ONLY boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, and for beverages.

Travel and Transportation

Traffic Safety, Road and Aviation Conditions: While in Maldives, you may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States. The information below concerning Maldives is provided for general reference only and may vary by location or circumstance.

Only a few of the islands are large enough to support automobiles. Maldives has good safety standards for land, sea and air travel. Roads in Malé and on the airport island are brick and generally well-maintained, though congested. Dirt roads on resort islands are well-kept by the resorts. Transportation in Malé is either by foot, by bus, or by readily-available taxis that charge a fixed fee for any single journey. Transportation between the airport and Malé is by vehicle or by a public ferry. Travel to nearby resort islands is usually by motorized water taxi and speedboat or seaplane. Trans Maldivian and Maldivian Air Taxi provide charter seaplane service to outlying islands during daylight hours. Maldivian, Manta Air, and Villa Air run fixed-wing domestic service to some of the atolls with land runways during night hours as well. Many resorts stop boat transfers between the airport and the resort island after sunset. Visitors to distant resorts arriving in the country at night can expect to stay overnight at a hotel in Malé or at the airport hotel and should confirm transfer arrangements in advance.

See our  Road Safety  page for more information. Visit the website of the Official Travel Guide of Maldives and national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Maldives, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Maldives’ Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA's safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to the Republic of Maldives should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

How do I get a visa for the Maldives?

With its gleaming turquoise lagoons, bamboo-thatched overwater bungalows and sugar-white sands, the Maldives is one of the world’s most desirable beach destinations.

Every year, almost two million travelers touch down at Velana International Airport for the tropical trip of a lifetime. The last thing you want is to miss out on a vacation in paradise because you forgot to check visa requirements and, luckily, we're here to help.

Fortunately, the visa process is surprisingly easy. Whether you’re sticking to the local islands or zipping off to a private hideaway, here’s everything you need to know about visa requirements for the Maldives.

How to get a visa on arrival

Travelers from every country in the world can get a free 30-day tourist visa stamped into their passport when they arrive in the Maldives. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, tourism is the largest sector of the Maldives' economy, so the government has tried to make it as easy as possible for vacationers to access these pristine islands.

To get your visa on arrival, you just need a follow a few key guidelines. Your passport must be machine-readable and valid for at least one month past your departure date, and you must show evidence of your return flight and hotel booking confirmation – the airline and immigration may ask for this information.

Official regulations state that you should be able to show proof that you have the funds to support your stay in the Maldives, but this is rarely requested from travelers with resort bookings. Be prepared that immigration officials may ask for evidence of cash or a bank statement – around US$100 per day of your stay should be sufficient. Any travelers arriving from countries where yellow fever is endemic must show a vaccination certificate upon arrival.

Every traveler needs to  complete an Imuga form 96 hours before both their arrival and departure flights. The digital form is free and requests basic information like a photo of your passport, flight number, duration of stay, where you’re staying and where you’re heading after the Maldives. Upon completion you'll get a QR code that you can store on your smartphone – it will be scanned by immigration at the airport.

What if I want to extend my visa?

Having too much fun in paradise? We don’t blame you. If you want to extend your 30-day tourist visa for an extra 60 days, giving you a total of 90 days in the Maldives, just talk to your resort or guesthouse. They will work with immigration on your behalf to arrange your visa extension.

The resort will let you know the documents you’ll need to renew your visa, including a full page in your passport, a recent passport-size photo, and confirmation of your stay and onward flight. The fee for extending your visa is Rf750. It’s recommended to start this process at least 10 days before your visa expires, but remember requirements are always subject to change.

Can I get a working holiday visa?

The Maldives does not offer working holiday visas. But if working on a small tropical island or aboard a boat in the Maldives sounds appealing, working visas are available if you can secure a job at one of the 180+ resorts or hotels. An approved Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Economic Development is required before applying for a Work Visa. From there, workers must meet requirements like having a passport valid for one year, a passport-sized photo, a medical health report, and all other necessary documents. Your employer will be able to guide you through the process.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Maldives set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Maldivian High Commission in the UK .

All travellers to Maldives must complete a Traveller Declaration Form (IMUGA) within 96 hours of arrival and departure.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Traveling to Maldives

Who needs a maldives tourist visa, maldives tourist visa validity, a valid passport, a complete travel itinerary, valid onward entry documents, traveller declaration form, yellow fever vaccination certificate (if applicable), maldives tourist visa application, maldives tourist visa fees, where to apply, maldives tourist visa processing time, approved visas, refusal of entry, maldives visa extension, maldives tourist visa faq.

The Republic of the Maldives is a collection of small islands in the Indian Ocean that has become well-known as a popular tourist destination. Each year, thousands travel to the Maldives to swim in turquoise waters and enjoy one of the many luxury experiences throughout the islands.

A Maldives tourist visa is granted to all nationalities upon arrival. As such, a foreign national traveling to the Maldives as a tourist is not obliged to obtain pre-approval for a tourist visa. However, all travelers seeking a tourist visa on arrival must satisfy the basic entry requirements to be cleared by the immigration authorities upon arrival.

The Maldives tourist visa is a visa-on-arrival that is issued for up to 30 days from the date of entry into the country. It is specifically issued to travelers coming to the Maldives for short-term stays for the purpose of tourism. The tourist visa may be extended for 60 additional days, for a fee.

Maldives Tourist Visa Requirements

Tourist visas can be obtained on arrival provided the applicant meets all the requirements. The following are necessary to be eligible for a Maldives tourist visa on arrival:

The applicant should hold a passport valid for at least 1 month with a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ).

The travel itinerary should include any onward or return airline tickets, with prepaid confirmed hotel or accommodation bookings; OR proof of financial subsistence for the duration of the applicant’s stay in the Maldives; OR sponsorship that is pre-approved by Maldives Immigration.

Applicants must have the appropriate travel documents for any onward destinations.

This is an electronic form that can be completed through the Maldives' official immigration portal IMUGA . It must be completed by all travelers coming to and from the Maldives within 96 hours of their flight.

Anyone above one (1) year old must have a valid yellow fever certification if traveling from one of the required countries. A list of countries that require this vaccination can be found on the official immigration website.

Obtaining a tourist visa in the Maldives is a simple process that does not require any prior visa application before traveling. The following are the steps tourists will take to receive their visa upon arrival in the Maldives:

Applicants must travel with the required materials to ensure they can obtain the visa on arrival once they arrive in the Maldives. This includes a complete travel itinerary and a yellow fever vaccination (if applicable).

This form must be completed within 96 hours before the flight time to the Maldives.

Travelers must present the required materials to the immigration officer at the port of entry.

If all requirements are met, tourists will receive their visa on arrival at the port of entry. Immigration officials are authorized to refuse entry to any travelers that do not meet their guidelines.

The Maldives tourist visa on arrival is free of charge for all travelers.

Tourist visas for the Maldives can be obtained upon arrival to the port of entry. Travelers should be sure to have all required documents prepared when they arrive in the country.

The processing time for a Maldives visa is very quick due to the nature of the visa-on-arrival process. Travelers who are prepared with all requirements should be able to obtain their tourist visa quickly when they arrive at the port of entry.

If the visa on arrival is obtained, the traveler is then free to enter the Maldives and proceed with their travel itinerary and activities for up to 30 days.

Maldives Immigration officers have the authority to refuse entry to any traveler coming through the port of entry. If the traveler is refused entry at the border, it is likely that the immigration officer has found an official reason not to admit them. Refusals are usually due to the following reasons:

  • Possession of fraudulent travel documents.
  • Apparent intention to engage in harmful or unlawful activities.
  • Expresses strong anti-semantic religious or political views.

It is possible to extend a Maldives tourist visa before the expiration date of the original tourist visa. Immigration officers will assess the traveler's financial position to see if they can support themselves for the duration of the extension period. Extension requests can be filed using the Visa Extension Application Form and submitted at the Head Office during working hours.

If the extension is approved, it will be granted for an additional 60 days for a fee of Rufiyaa 750. The total amount of days a tourist can remain in the Maldives is 90 (30 days upon arrival + 60 days extension).

The Maldives tourist visa is a travel document that allows foreign nationals to enter the country lawfully. It is issued as a visa-on-arrival that is issued for 30 days from the date of entry in the country.

All nationalities can obtain a Maldives tourist visa upon arrival to the port of entry provided they meet the requirements and complete the Traveller Declaration form within 96 hours of flight time.

The Maldives tourist visa is free of charge for all travelers.

The Maldivian tourist visa is issued for up to 30 days with the possibility for an extension of up to 60 days. Extensions can be applied for within the country at the Maldives Immigration Head Office.

Seychelles Vs. The Maldives: Which Is Better For Your Honeymoon

  • Seychelles and Maldives are both luxury and expensive destinations, but Seychelles is smaller and more relaxed while the Maldives is larger and more rule-oriented.
  • Seychelles has a mix of French, British, and African influences, while the Maldives strictly observes Islam and has specific rules on alcohol and clothing.
  • Both destinations provide visa-free access to all countries, but Seychelles allows for longer stays, up to three months, while the Maldives allows for up to 30 days.

From a vacationer's point of view, the Seychelles and the Maldives have a number of things in common. Both are tropical Indian Ocean paradises famous for their world-class beaches and both are small countries with small islands. But which is better for a honeymoon? Ultimately, the answer to that question is subjective, but there are a number of factors visitors can consider.

The Maldives is world famous for its many world-class resorts while Seychelles is arguably the most famous tropical island destination in and around Africa. One thing both countries have in common is that they are generally luxury and expensive destinations (still there are ways to keep the budget in check while visiting the Seychelles ). Here's what to know about each destination and how to choose the best one for your honeymoon.

Seychelles Vs Maldives: What To Know

Seychelles is smaller and more relaxed while the maldives is larger but more rule-oriented.

Both the Seychelles and the Maldives achieved independence from the British Empire and English is widely spoken in each of them.

Seychelles Profile:

  • Population: Approx. 100,000
  • Predominate Religion: Christianity
  • Size: 176 sq miles

The Seychelles is the smallest country in Africa and is located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa. It was uninhabited before the Europeans arrived in the 16th century and now enjoys one of the highest Human Development Index rankings in Africa. The culture of Seychelles is a mix of French, British, and African influences.

The Maldives is the smallest country in South Asia (or the larger Indian subcontinent). It is made up of 26 atolls and is the lowest-lying country in the world.

Maldives Profile:

  • Population: 521,000
  • Predominate Religion: Islam
  • Size: 115 square miles

The Maldives observes a strict interpretation of Islam . While alcohol and wearing bikinis are permitted on the resorts, they are not permitted off the resorts. Visitors should read up on the rules and customs of the Maldives if they would like to explore the country away from the resorts.

This should particularly be kept in mind with honeymooners in the Maldives; refrain from showing public affection outside the resorts.

Seychelles Vs Maldives: The Ease Of Visiting

Travelers can stay longer in seychelles.

The Seychelles and the Maldives are two rare examples of countries that provide visa-free access to all countries of the world. Anyone can enter the Maldives for up to 30 days while travelers may stay in the Seychelles for up to three months.

That being said, most tourists need to have a return ticket upon arrival, and they may need to show proof of booked accommodation.

  • Visa Policy Of Seychelles: Visa Free Up To 3 Months
  • Visa Policy Of Maldives: Visa Free Up To 30 Days

For folks coming from the United States, there are no direct flights to either destination. There are plenty of direct flights to the Seychelles from Europe and the Middle East (plus a few from Africa) while the Maldives is well-connected to Europe and the greater Asian region.

Both destinations are a long way from the United States (this is partly why tropical island destinations in the Caribbean and Tahiti in French Polynesia are often more popular with American holidaymakers).

Seychelles & The Maldives: The Contrasting Geography

Visit the maldives for beaches and seychelles for beaches plus mountain hikes.

While the Maldives is made up of numerous atoll islands, none of which are more than a few feet above sea level — Maldives is the lowest country in the world — the Seychelles has mountains. The Seychelles not only has mountainous islands but also a couple of dozen pristine coral islands.

  • Seychelles Highest Point: 905 meters (2,969 ft)
  • Maldives Highest Point: 2.4 meters (7 ft 10 in)

The Seychelles have named islands (the bulk of which are uninhabited). The largest and most populated island is Mahé and the capital is Victoria. The island has around 86% of the population of the country and is the main attraction of the country.

The highest point on Mahé rises to almost 3,000 feet. Tropical reefs, white sand beaches, and resorts are the dream of many, but they can soon become a little boring.

Holidaymakers' schedules on tropical islands are something like: go for a swim, have breakfast, go snorkeling, drink a cocktail on the beach, watch the sunset over dinner and cocktails — then repeat, repeat, repeat.

On Mahé, visitors can go hiking and escape the heat of the tropical lowlands. The culture and people of Seychelles are also an attraction of the island; it is also a matriarchal society and unwed mothers are quite common.

That being said, Male (the capital of the Maldives) is also worth visiting and is one of the most unusual capitals in the world.

Which is better for a honeymoon, Seychelles or the Maldives?

So which is best for honeymooners? It can be argued that the Maldives is better for those happy to stay in the resorts while the Seychelles is better for those who would like to freely explore outside the resorts.

LIST: Exotic visa-free destinations for Filipino travelers

By Kara Santos Published Jun 01, 2024 1:33 pm Updated Jun 03, 2024 7:00 pm

Need some travel inspiration for your next out-of-the-country adventure? In case you didn't know, Philippine passport holders currently have visa-free access to 69 countries and territories around the world.

While many travelers tend to pick popular destinations in neighboring Asian countries with direct and cheap flights from Manila, there are loads of other exotic destinations that don’t require a visa for Philippine passport holders. Granted, getting to these destinations may be more challenging or expensive to get to, but they’re worth the memories and adventure according to those lucky enough to have traveled there.

Here are just a few exotic visa-free destinations Filipino travelers can consider with practical tips from world travelers PhilSTAR L!fe spoke to.

Kazakhstan

maldives visa free travel

Kazakhstan is the typical starting point for exploring Central Asia, famous for its Silk Road between Europe and the Far East. This rich multicultural region with vast mountain ranges, historic sites, and natural wonders offers a paradise without the typical crowds of tourists found in Europe and other parts of Asia. Philippine passport holders can travel visa-free to several countries in Central Asia including Kazakhstan and Tajikistan and stay for 30 days in each. They can also get an eVisa for 30-day stays in Uzbekistan and an eVisa or visa on arrival for Kyrgyzstan , and stay for 60 days.

Glen Santillan of Escape Manila , who recently spent 18 days traveling solo around all four countries, said Filipinos seeking a unique travel adventure are in for a “world packed with fresh experiences” and “ breathtaking natural wonders that will leave you speechless.”

“Here, you'll encounter a contrast to the tropical paradise of the Philippines: winters with landscapes painted in snow, a rich history stretching back to the Silk Road era, and a unique blend of Asian and European influences,” he told PhilSTAR L!fe .

Santillan recommends tourists head to Kolsay Lakes and Kaindy Lake, which offer crystal-clear waters and dramatic mountain backdrops.

“For those who love a challenge, exploring the rock formations of Charyn Canyon is an unforgettable experience. You can also ski during winter at Shymbulak Ski Resort,” he said.

While exploring Central Asia used to be a bit complicated and expensive for Filipino travelers, it’s now within easier reach with the recent launch of AirAsia's direct flight from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Almaty, the former capital and largest city in Kazakhstan, making the region more accessible for Southeast Asians, including Filipinos.

“Simply hop on a flight from Manila to KL and connect seamlessly to your Central Asian adventure in Almaty,” he said.

Surprisingly, Central Asia is “easy on the wallet,” said Santillan, who only spent a total of P106,690 including the RT flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Almaty, accommodations, transportation, tours, food and other expenses for his epic 18-day trip. Check out his detailed itinerary and expense breakdown for Central Asia here .

With wide open spaces covered by grassy steppes and mountains and deserts surrounding it, Mongolia, a vast country in East Asia (the same geographical region as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan), happens to be visa-free for Filipino travelers. Philippine passport holders can enjoy a short-term stay of 21 days in Mongolia .

According to a n international consultant that L!fe spoke to, who traveled to Mongolia twice during winter (February-March) and spring months (May), the entry process was smooth, immigration officers were nice, and most speak good English.

While Mongolia is an expensive destination because of the airfare and hotels, they said it’s a worthy destination for those willing to spend because of “its history and the places which you will not see anywhere else.”

“I think I was lucky during my first visit because I saw the snow-covered mountains going to the airport, beyond words in terms of beauty,” they said.

In Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, tourists can check out the train station where Crash Landing on You was filmed, the Genghis Khan Park and museum, art galleries, bookstores, and shop for genuine cashmere shawls. Tours to the Genghis Khan Center, camping trips in Ger, and monastery visits outside the city can be arranged with local tour groups, with day tours costing roughly 300 USD (P17,000) excluding food.

Beyond Mongolian barbecue, Mongolia has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine with many Korean and Japanese specialties and “beef to die for” at “much cheaper rates than in the Philippines in terms of quality, quantity, and service.” Fast food, including burgers and pizza, is generally cheaper as well.

From Manila, multiple airlines fly to Ulaanbaatar, with stopovers in either Seoul, South Korea, Beijing in China, or Hong Kong.

maldives visa free travel

South America has been described by National Geographic as “a continent of extremes,” since it’s home to the world's largest river (the Amazon), the longest mountain range (Andes), the world's driest place (the Atacama Desert), and wettest places on earth (Lopez de Micay in Colombia). In case you didn’t know, Pinoys can travel to multiple countries in South America including B razil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua , and Suriname either visa-free or with a visa on arrival, with stays ranging from 30 days to 183 days.

Angel Juarez of Lakwatsero.com, who went on a two-week trip around Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru said Filipino travelers can find familiar comforts because of the Spanish influence while still being “awed by the differences and uniqueness ingrained in their culture and traditions.” The avid traveler and mountaineer recommends first-time tourists get their fill of hiking trails, lakes, ancient cities, and food.

“The Machu Picchu, of course, should be on top of your list, you can get to it on a budget! Once you have crossed it off your bucket list, hike the mountains and lakes of Cordillera Blanca, see for yourself the Nazca Lines and the White City of Arequipa, visit the desert oasis of Huacachina, explore the ancient cities of Cusco and Lima, and more. In between these activities, don't forget to try and appreciate the local food and delicacies,” Juarez told L!fe .

maldives visa free travel

Are countries in South America expensive to explore? While the airfare will "surely eat up a big chunk of your travel budget," Juarez said: “Once you get there, everything is reasonably priced or even cheaper compared to other countries, even the Philippines.”

The usual route to South America involves passing through the United States, which offers lots of cheap flights from there to Lima, the capital and largest city of Peru. Juarez flew back via a short layover in Mexico before flying back to San Francisco and Manila, which requires a US visa. However, there’s another possible route for Pinoys.

“Another option is via Ethiopia [in East Africa] which would require a transfer in Hong Kong and an onward connection to Sao Paulo, Brazil. You will be needing an e-visa in Ethiopia which can easily be applied for online, while Hong Kong and Brazil are visa-free for Filipinos,” said Juarez.

maldives visa free travel

Mention Nepal and you immediately think of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain. Philippine passport holders can travel to Nepal easily with an online visa/visa on arrival and stay for 90 days. Located in South Asia, home of the Himalayas and the origin of some of the world's oldest civilizations, Nepal is a culturally enriching destination. Other countries in South Asia such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan only require electronic visas or visas on arrival as well, making it easier for Filipino travelers to plan trips.

Fred Lubang, a long-time advocate for peace, human rights, and disarmament issues, s aid Nepal is a fantastic destination for Filipino travelers due to its “cultural richness, natural beauty, and affordability.”

“Unlike more common winter destinations like Japan or Korea, Nepal offers a budget-friendly alternative that doesn't compromise on experiences. Additionally, Nepal is known for its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, which extends to the LGBTQ community, making it a comfortable and enjoyable place for diverse travelers,” he said.

“Nepal also offers Filipinos a chance to learn about Hindu religion, which is very different from the Philippines' dominant monotheistic Catholic religion. The experience will definitely enrich their knowledge and appreciation to explore the world. That, and the Himalayas will take your breath away,” he added.

Top activities to do include trekking to get a glimpse of the beauty of the Himalayas, without necessarily having to climb up Mt. Everest. He also recommends Kathmandu Valley for its cultural heritage sites, Pokhara for stunning lakeside views and adventure sports, traditional villages, and good food.

maldives visa free travel

Nepal is “generally very affordable” especially compared to popular destinations like Japan or Korea in winter time and is relatively easy for Filipinos to visit.

“Accommodation ranges from budget-friendly guesthouses to more luxurious hotels, and food is inexpensive. Transportation within the country is also affordable, they also have a local app-based transport service and the usual taxis, or domestic flights to other equally interesting cities,” Lubang said.

Philippine passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu (the capital of Nepal). English is widely spoken in tourist areas, so communication is rarely a problem. Various airlines offer flights from Manila to Kathmandu with connections in Guangzhou, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur.

maldives visa free travel

Maldives, the smallest country in Asia, is a popular destination for honeymooners and luxury travelers because of its remote location and tropical appeal. The country, located south of India, is made up of 1,190 coral atolls, each encircling a lagoon with deep channels. Male, the capital and most populous city of the Maldives, is the main entry point for all travelers. All nationalities, including Filipinos, get a 30-day free visa on arrival to the Maldives.

Backpacker and freelance writer Kat Cortes of Tara Let’s Anywhere said her experience with immigration was smooth and she was just asked to show her passport when she traveled there.

“In terms of scenery, Maldives is a lot like the Philippines but a bit more exotic. It has world-class beaches and accessible snorkeling areas where you can see not just the usual corals and fishes but also manta rays, dolphins, and sea turtles. And best of all—it offers numerous beautiful water villas,” Cortes told L!fe .

As a tropical paradise, beach bumming, island hopping, picnicking in a sandbar, and snorkeling/diving are the order of the day.

maldives visa free travel

Since Maldives is on the expensive side when it comes to flights, Cortes recommends travelers plan their trip well in advance, taking advantage of resort discounts and promos, and cutting costs by staying in backpacker-friendly islands like Maafushi. Foodies will also be happy to find “reasonably priced buffets and delicious local fare” there. You can also find public beaches and free tourist spots to visit in Maldives .

So how do you get to the Maldives from the Philippines? There are currently no direct flights from Manila, but Pinoy travelers can take a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to get to Velana International Airport in Male. Check out her travel guide to Maldives for full details.

Maldives Minister Urges Indians to Visit As India Moves from Top Source Market to 6th

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

May 7th, 2024 at 9:45 AM EDT

The Maldivian tourism minister's plea to Indian visitors highlights the critical role tourism plays in the country's economic framework. It also speaks volumes about India's outbound tourism potential.

Peden Doma Bhutia

It’s been four months since the #BoycottMaldives trend started in India, and Maldives wants those tourists back.

“As the tourism minister, I want to ask Indians to please be a part of Maldives’ tourism,” said Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal to PTI Videos. “Our economy depends on tourism. Our people and the government will extend a warm welcome to Indian travelers.”

The tensions began when three Maldivian politicians made disparaging remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indian arrivals have plummeted more than 40% since then — to roughly 44,000 so far this year.

VIDEO | Here’s what Tourism Minister of Maldives Ibrahim Faisal said on India-Maldives relations. “We have a history. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India). We always promote peace and a friendly environment. Our people and the government will… pic.twitter.com/xFgEkgEunv — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) May 6, 2024

India’s ranking from the second-largest tourism source market during this period last year to the sixth shows the impact of the diplomatic tensions.

Maldives wants to mend the relationship. “We have a history. The Indian government has been very helpful during our time of need. We welcome Indian arrivals that’s a clear message from us. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India) and promote peace and a friendly environment,” the Maldives tourism minister said.

Faisal also talked about how India’s large population presents a huge tourism market for Maldives.

What Started It All

The controversy arose after Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep islands, with social media users suggesting that the visit was a push for Indian tourists to visit domestic destinations rather than international ones like Maldives.

The three Maldivian deputy ministers used words such as “clown” to refer to Modi, leading to the boycott.

Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip announced that it would suspend all flight bookings to Maldives. Skift tried searching for flights on the EaseMyTrip platform on Wednesday and found none.

“Since mid-January, we’ve upheld our decision of suspending flights to the Maldives,” Nishant Pitti, CEO and co-founder, of EaseMyTrip, told Skift. “As a leading Indian online travel agency (OTA) and out of a sense of responsibility, we prioritized our commitment over the business opportunities and continue to stand by it.”

Maldives Wants Indian Tourists

India was the biggest source market for tourism into the Maldives in 2023, with over 11% share in its 1.8 million tourism arrivals, according to the tourism ministry.

Last year, Maldives brought in 209,198 Indian tourists.

The usually-reticent CEO of resort chain Soneva, Sonu Shivdasani, also wrote about the potential impact of the diplomatic stand off on the tourism industry , and hoped for a reconciliation.

Determined to increase Indian arrivals to the island destination, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, had shared with Skift its plans to host roadshows in 3 Indian cities in July.

“Properties and resorts that rely heavily on the Indian market have been severely affected. This will hurt us in the long term and that is why we have decided to engage with the India market,” Abdulla Ghiyas, president of the association told Skift.
