Pristine white sand beaches, aquamarine waters and a lush volcanic landscape – arriving in Fiji truly feels like you've discovered paradise.

This far-flung archipelago, made up of more than 300 islands, has a rich culture with delicious food and a joie-de-vivre attitude at its heart. Start planning your trip now with our shortlist of the best places to visit in this picture-perfect corner of the world.

Best place for multicultural Fiji

If you're flying into Fiji, you’ll see Nadi from the air. This pint-sized city is located just a short drive from the international airport and is a great spot to kick off your Fijian adventure. A mix of stores in a rainbow of colors lines the roads, with everything from electronics to handicrafts on offer.

The covered market is a real treat for the senses, with an array of local produce on offer. Another must-visit spot in the city is the spectacular Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu temple , which is located downtown at the southern end of the main road. This spectacular temple, the largest in the Pacific, features intricate carvings that could keep you captivated for days. This is a good place to start your holiday before  making your way around Fiji .

Local tip:  Before entering a Hindu temple, always seek permission and remove your shoes. Photography is generally acceptable outside the temple but don't take photos inside – be respectful and put your camera away.

2. Yasawa Islands

Best region for stunning scenery

Yasawa means "heaven" in Fijian and this string of islands is certainly heavenly. The archipelago, located in the northwest, comprises around 20 islands of varying size with palm-lined beaches, aquamarine waters and dramatic topography being the running theme. Despite their remote location, the majority of the islands are inhabited and many feature hotels.

The Yasawa Flyer ferry departs daily from Port Denarau Marina close to the airport and stops at more than 12 of the islands. South Sea Cruises also runs ferry services and excursions in the area.

3. Nanuku Resort

Best place for ultimate luxury

Elevate your Fiji trip by booking into the blissful confines of the five-star Nanuku Resort . This award-winning hotel on the southern edge of Fiji’s main island makes for a dreamy setting, with villas and apartments enveloped by lush foliage and a 3.2km (2-mile) white sand beach fringing the property.

The rooms feature an attractive blend of modern and Fijian-styled interiors with amenities including private plunge pools and cinema rooms. The luxe experience continues when it comes to dining – the main restaurant serves up French cuisine with a Pacific twist and, for a special occasion, you can book a dining experience on the shores of the hotel’s private island or its cliffside perch.

4. Denarau Island

Best place to stay for families

Located 20 minutes from the airport, the small island of Denarau is a wonderful option for families – everything you need is on your doorstep. The outcrop, connected to the mainland via a bridge, has been developed into a luxury tourism spot complete with a state-of-the-art marina, five-star resorts, top-notch restaurants and an 18-hole golf course.

It's an apartment hotel, with fully equipped kitchens, dining rooms and lounge areas. Other perks at the property include parking, a swimming pool, babysitting services, a cafe, a gym and a tour desk offering a wide range of day and multi-day trips.

Planning tip: Fancy seeing more of the island and visiting other resorts? All aboard the unmissable Bula Bus – it's the one with the thatched roof.

Best island for perfect holiday shots

Let your cares wash away with a stay on Kuata. This far-flung island, which is part of the Yasawa archipelago , makes for a heavenly retreat with just one hotel (the Barefoot Kuata Island ), secluded beaches, secret caves and some great hiking trails.

The Barefoot resort, which has another location several islands away, features a scattering of luxury safari-style tented rooms and beachfront bures (traditional wood-and-straw huts); there are also dormitories if you’re traveling on a budget. Facilities include an open-air restaurant, a bar and a swimming pool complete with a hammock for some scenic holiday shots. The Yasawa Flyer ferry stops at the island as part of its route.

Detour: Hire a guide and head up Kuata’s volcanic summit climb. It's a strenuous uphill walk but you'll be rewarded with dramatic views. The best times to go are before sunrise and sunset (and not only because it's cooler).

Best for local cuisine

Tuck into an array of mouth-watering dishes at Tukuni . This restaurant boasts a lofty setting overlooking a sweeping bay close to the city of Lautoka on the west coast of the main island and is a community-run operation with local farmers and fishermen supplying the ingredients.

Cooking takes place over an open fire and some popular dishes include ika tavu (smoked fish) and kokoda (marinated fish in coconut milk). There’s also a great selection of vegetarian dishes that include rourou (taro leaves). The Fijian experience doesn’t just extend to the food – the restaurant has a cozy, authentic feel, with handcrafted solid wood furnishings and woven palm wall panels setting the scene.

Local tip : Fijian food offers a unique fusion of flavors with a Pacific take on cuisines from India and beyond. Staples such as sweet potato, cassava and taro are cooked with fish, vegetables and coconut; curries are generally milder and lighter here.

7. Awakening Shark Dive

Best experience for adrenaline seekers

Put your fears to one side and buckle up for an adrenaline-pumping experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life. The Awakening Shark Dive experience is offered by the Barefoot Resort on Kuata Island and it brings you face to face with bull sharks. Experienced divers will lead you out to a spot close to the island where the sharks congregate thanks to efforts to restore the surrounding corals.

Kneel on the ocean floor and stay still while the sharks, which can be up to 3 meters (9.8ft) in length, slink in for a feeding session. Other shark species known to patrol the area include tiger, nurse, lemon, and silver tips.

8. Mount Tomanivi

Best for epic views

Lace up your hiking boots and be prepared to break a sweat for a challenging climb up to the summit of Mount Tomanivi. This jungle-strewn peak on the main island is the highest point in Fiji, measuring 1324 meters (4343ft). The return trek takes around four hours but you'll realize it was worth the effort as you take in the epic views of the surrounding emerald interior and the endless blue beyond.

Adventure company Talanoa Treks runs trips to Mount Tomanivi with local guides, and if you fancy a little more exertion, the company runs a "two peak challenge" with Fiji’s second-highest peak, Mount Batilamu, added to the agenda.

9. Projects Abroad

Best for sustainable travel in Fiji

Help do your bit for the environment while in Fiji and sign up as a volunteer with Projects Abroad . This social enterprise, which has one location in Nadi and another close to the coast in Pacific Harbour, runs a range of volunteer projects that include shark conservation and beach clean-ups.

One of the business’ other focuses is mangrove restoration in a bid to protect natural habitats and stop coastal erosion. Many volunteers offset the carbon footprint of their flight by planting mangrove seedlings in the nursery and to date, more than 6 hectares (15 acres) of mangroves have been planted by Projects Abroad volunteers in Fiji since 2014.

Local tip: Like many other Pacific islands, Fiji is already feeling the effects of climate change. The village of Vunidogoloa was the first to move because of floods and erosion: 32 families relocated to higher land 2km (1.2 miles) away.

Author Karen Hastings has been visiting Fiji for more than three decades. She was married here, and has since returned many times with her family.

Famous for its friendly people and heavenly tropical islands, Fiji is the quintessential South Pacific paradise. With more than 300 islands to choose from, you'll find plenty of rewarding things to do.

Colorful coral reef in Fiji

Viti Levu: Suva, on the largest island of Viti Levu, is the capital. Nadi, on the western side of the island, is Fiji's main international gateway and lies near the large resorts of the Coral Coast and Denarau Island. Not far from here, you can stroll along sand dunes to ancient archeological sites, soak in therapeutic mud pools and hot springs, dive with sharks in Beqa Lagoon, and raft the Upper Navua River through pristine rainforests.

Outer Islands: The outer islands have their own alluring natural attractions. The Mamanuca Islands are home to one of the world's top surf breaks, and in other island groups, you'll find mystical caves, Fiji's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the world's fourth largest barrier reef.

Fiji also has great accommodation options, from family focused resorts to all-inclusive resorts. Fijians also love children, so this is a great destination for families.

For ideas on the best places to visit in this idyllic island paradise, read our list of the top attractions in Fiji.

Blue Lagoon Cruise: Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands

If you want to sample several of Fiji's best islands on your holiday, a Blue Lagoon Cruise is a great option. These intimate 68-passenger cruises offer a choice of three different itineraries in the picture-postcard Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands. This company offers an adults-only experience, making it a truly romantic experience for couples. If you're traveling with kids, though, you should look elsewhere.

You can choose from three-, four-, or seven-night cruises . All have flexible itineraries that are subject to change, depending on the weather and local festivities. Daily schedules incorporate a maximum of four hours of cruising each day, so you can spend most of your time sightseeing around the islands.

Activities include swimming, diving, and snorkeling in the silky waters; picnics on uninhabited islands; fishing; and visiting local villages and attractions, like the Sawa i lau Caves. Cruises depart from Port Denarau.

The Yasawa Flyer also offers daily voyages through the Yasawas from Denarau Marina.

Palms along the beach on Denarau Island

Are you craving a shopping fix, a hearty meal, a game of golf, or a pampering spa treatment? You can do all this and more on a visit to Denarau Island. This tourist hot spot is a one-stop hub for shopping, dining, and Fiji entertainment, about 20 minutes from Nadi's international airport.

If your main goal is to stock up on souvenirs, you'll find everything here, from the ubiquitous wooden cava bowls and colorful Fijian sarongs to jewelry, surf wear, and shell knick-knacks.

Feeling peckish? Choose from different 40 restaurants, serving everything from pizza and American-style burgers to Fijjian food and Indian cuisine. Before or after you dine, you can also catch some free entertainment. Every evening between 6:30 and 7:30, fire dancers light up the outdoor area, and Polynesian and Melanesian dancers add another welcome dash of Fijjian culture.

Port Denarau Marina here is the launching point for a range of tours and activities. Snorkeling, sailing, jet skiing - you can book it all here. The marina is also the departure point for cruises to other islands, like the Mamanuca and Yasawa chain.

Golfers can tee off at the palm-studded 18-hole course, with mesmerizing views of the sea, and if your muscles are sore after a round or two, book a relaxing massage at the spa.

If you're wondering where to stay in Fiji, Port Denarau is also home to nine hotels and resorts, including the Sheraton Denarau Villas and the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa .

Getting around is easy, too. The handy Bula Bus will whisk you from your Denarau Island resort to all the shopping, dining, and entertainment areas.

Fijian crested iguana

Looking for a mix of nature and adventure? Head to Kula Wild Adventure Park in Sigatoka. Here, you can hold the rare Fijian crested iguana, capture close-up images of Fiji's beautiful native birds, and learn about captive breeding programs for some of the country's endangered species.

Wooden boardwalks thread through more than 12 acres of forest along the valley floor and canopy, where you can see tropical plants; lizards; snakes; and native birds, including doves, parrots, and waterbirds. Marine exhibits house tropical fish, colorful soft coral, and sea turtles. If you time it right, you can even hand-feed baby sea turtles.

If you prefer more of an adrenaline buzz, take a ride through the forest on the Roller Coaster Zip Rail or zoom down one of the waterslides. Splash pools also tempt younger visitors on hot days.

This is a fun place to visit for critter-loving kids and adults alike.

Shark in Beqa Lagoon

About 144 kilometers southeast of Nadi, off Pacific Harbour, Beqa (pronounced "Benga") Lagoon lures avid divers and adventure seekers, many of whom come here to experience the Beqa Lagoon Shark Dive .

With stringent safety measures in place, expert local dive operators offer exhilarating face-to-face encounters with these much-feared creatures in their natural habitat. Among the many species you can see are bull sharks, whitetip, blacktip reef sharks, and even tiger sharks.

If you're looking for a more subdued underwater experience, the lagoon is home to more than 100 dive sites. Coral bommies, pinnacles, and wrecks showcase an impressive diversity of soft corals and tropical fish, and most sites are in relatively shallow waters not far from shore. This is a great place to dive if you're visiting Viti Levu and don't have time to travel to reefs around the smaller islands.

Beqa Island , just offshore, is home to the Sawau tribe, who started the famous Fiji tradition of fire walking, and you can still watch this centuries-old tradition at ceremonies in nearby resorts.

Navua River, Viti Levu

The Navua River on Viti Levu flows for 65 kilometers from the Viti Levu highlands to the south coast through magnificent scenery, with lush rainforests, waterfalls, and rugged canyons.

You can paddle the Upper Navua River in kayaks or canoes, float along on a bilibili (bamboo raft), or ride the whitewater rapids (Grade II to Grade III) on an inflatable raft.

Wildlife such as fruit bats, herons, and native parrots are often spotted along the way, and you can combine a river experience with cultural tours to local villages and participate in traditional kava ceremonies.

This tangled, tropical wilderness offers a taste of the real Fiji — especially if you are based at one of the manicured resorts of the Coral Coast, Denarau Island, and Pacific Harbour.

Orchid in the Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Less than 30 minutes by car from Nadi, snuggled in the lush foothills of their namesake mountain peak, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a rewarding day trip — especially if you're a green thumb.

Once the private collection of the late actor Raymond Burr of Perry Mason fame, these gorgeous gardens spotlight more than 2,000 species of orchids, as well as a tranquil lily pond replete with tadpoles and frogs.

You can explore the gardens on covered boardwalks that wind through 20 hectares of lawns and native forest. Swings and hammocks invite you to linger and enjoy the peace and serenity of this verdant valley, and free guided tours share fascinating details on the history of the gardens.

After admiring all the botanical beauties, visit the nearby Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool . Here, you can indulge in one of the more unusual things to do in Fiji: a slimy, yet strangely soothing, mud bath. Don't worry — after coating your body in mud, you can clean off with a soak in the mineral pools and enjoy a relaxing massage.

Pacific Harbour, Viti Levu

Less than 50 kilometers from Suva, Pacific Harbour is the self-proclaimed "Adventure Capital of Fiji." This upscale enclave of vacation homes and resorts began its life as a residential canal development in the 1970s, and today, it's evolving into a hot spot for adrenaline sports.

Popular things to do here include river rafting on the nearby Upper Navua River , ziplining, jet skiing, surfing, 4WD adventures, and a heart-pumping dive with bull sharks in Beqa Lagoon .

If you prefer more low-key activities, Pacific Harbour is also home to a popular arts village with restaurants, souvenir stalls, and cultural shows.

Accommodation options range from budget hostels to luxury resorts, and the brand new Pacific Palm Marina is underway, with restaurants, upscale residences, a golf course, and spa.

About 20 minutes by car from Pacific Harbour, Kila Eco Adventure Park offers ziplining, ropes courses, and nature walks.

Great Astrolabe Reef, Kadavu

Fringing Fiji's fourth largest island, Kadavu, and other small islands in the Kadavu group, the 100-kilometer-long Great Astrolabe Reef is the fourth largest barrier reef in the world .

Divers come here to submerge themselves in an underwater wonderland of caverns, tunnels, pinnacles, drop-offs, kaleidoscopic hard and soft corals, and tropical fish.

Most of the dive sites are easily accessible by boat from the southern shores of Kadavu, the currents are typically moderate, and visibility ranges from 10 to 40 meters. The dives cover all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Snorkelers can also enjoy the rich marine life here and the chance to swim with manta rays.

Anglers can fish in designated areas — the reef is known for its abundance of billfish species, as well as tuna, mahi mahi, and giant trevally.

Cloudbreak, Mamanuca Islands

Frequently gracing the list of the world's best and most challenging waves for surfers, Cloudbreak lies on a sheltered reef about two kilometers from Tavarua Island Resort , near Namotu Island Resort, in the Mamanuca Islands.

This internationally renowned left reef break speeds up as it barrels over a shallow reef, dumping a massive volume of water, and it's surfable during all tides. Depending on conditions, waves vary in height from two to 20 feet, and access is usually via a Jet Ski and tow board.

Not surprisingly, the wave is best attempted by expert surfers only. In 2016, Hawaiian surfer Aaron Gold almost drowned riding this break.

The best swell comes from the south/southwest, thanks to the eastern trade winds, which typically blow between March and October.

Tavarua and nearby islands offer access to eight main surf breaks, including Swimming Pools, Tavarua Rights, and Namotu Left.

Besides Tavarua and Namotu, other resorts that offer access to Cloudbreak include Funky Fish Beach Resort ; Plantation Island Resort ; and the ultimate couples' resort, the adults-only Lomani Island Resort .

Natadola Beach

Located on the main island of Viti Levu, Natadola Beach has been repeatedly voted one of the best beaches in Fiji. This accolade is well earned due to its soft, cream-colored sand and numerous shade-giving palms.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy at this beautiful beach. From snorkeling to horseback riding to just plain beachin, you won't be bored. Those who like to surf are in luck. The rough water at this popular beach offers up optimal conditions for riding the waves .

That said, the surf here can be quite strong, so if you're traveling with children, be sure to hold on tight and beware of the undertow.

Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, Nadi

One of the top tourist attractions in Nadi, the rainbow-hued Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere and draws a steady stream of devotees, as well as tourists who come here to admire the impressive Dravidian architecture.

Artists traveled from India to paint the temple and work on its colorful ceiling frescoes. The temple is dedicated to the God Mungan, depicted by the wooden statue from India housed in the main temple.

Be sure to follow the dress code when visiting here, (cover up and take your shoes off), and note that photographs are off limits once you enter.

Robinson Crusoe Island

There's something extra special about visiting a private, secluded island. When that isle is called Robinson Crusoe Island, you can rest assured you'll have an experience to remember. This remote beauty boasts a soft sandy beach, multiple water sports, and a relaxing vibe that can't be beat.

If you want to stay longer, no problem. The exclusive Likuri Island Resort welcomes families and couples alike to enjoy the relaxing facilities in this romantic island paradise. But you'll have to find your own way home the next day.

Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, Viti Levu

About 60 kilometers south of Nadi, Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park was the country's first national park, established to protect this fragile ecosystem of coastal dunes near the mouth of the Sigatoka River.

Formed over thousands of years, the dunes range in height from 20 to 60 meters, with breathtaking views of the surf from the highest peaks.

To explore the park, you can choose from two self-guided walks: a one-hour walk through a forest to the beach or a two-hour walk along the ridgeline. Highlights include visiting the archaeological sites to see ancient Lapita artifacts, including more than two-thousand-year-old pottery, stone tools, and one of the biggest burial sites in the Pacific.

Bird-watching is also popular, and the small visitor center displays some interesting artifacts found at the site, as well as information about its history and ecology.

Fiji Museum

You can learn all about Fiji's fascinating culture and history at the small Fiji Museum in central Suva, set within Thurston Gardens . An hour or two here will give you a good overview of the country's history and culture.

Exhibits cover the culture of the Indigenous Fijians, British colonial history, the influence of the country's large Indian population, and Fiji's natural history.

In the maritime exhibits, double-hulled Fijian canoes and a bilibili (bamboo raft) are on display, as well as the rudder from the HMS Bounty. Other highlights include exhibits on the practice of cannibalism, shards of pottery found at the Sigatoka Dunes archeological sites, and works by contemporary Fijian artists.

After admiring all the exhibits, you can relax with a picnic under the palms and fig trees in the surrounding botanical gardens. The museum is currently undergoing a major renovation with plans to reopen "soon." In the meantime, their office, gift shop, and library are open from 8am to 4:30pm.

Levuka, Ovalau

Fiji's only UNESCO World Heritage Site , Levuka is the capital of Ovalau, the main island of the Lomaiviti group, and it was also the first colonial capital of Fiji. This is where the first Europeans settled in the early 19th century, and its historic center, with old wooden buildings, achieved World Heritage status in 2013.

Today, the town is not a thriving tourist destination, rather, it's a quaint window into old Fiji, nestled amid mango trees and coconut palms.

Highlights include the Royal Hotel , opened in the 1860s and still operating today as the oldest hotel in the South Pacific ; Sacred Heart Cathedral and Presbytery from the 1860s; and the Morris Hedstrom bond store.

Most visitors to Levuka organize homestays with the locals and linger a while to soak up the laid-back ambience of this friendly town.

Tavoro Waterfalls

Nature lovers, hikers, and birders can soak up some of Fiji's lush natural beauty in Bouma National Heritage Park on the island of Taveuni.

Established in 1990, the park encompasses about 150 square kilometers of rainforest, with rare tropical plants and an impressive diversity of birds, as well as four villages that are each responsible for managing portions of the park.

You can snorkel in the marine park at Waitabu; hike through the rainforest to ancient ruins near Vidawa; and kayak or stroll the Lavena Coastal Walk , stopping at waterfalls for a swim along the way.

A particular highlight of the park are the Tavoro Waterfalls , with three sets of falls maintained by the nearby Korovou village, where you can swim in the cool volcanic pools and capture photos of the veil-like streams of water gushing down the rockfaces.

The park is also home to Lake Tagimaucia , a crater lake, where the rare Tagimaucia flower blooms, and De Voeux Peak , which offers spectacular views from its 1,195-meter summit.

Outside the Sawa-i-Lau Caves, Yasawa Islands

In the northern Yasawa Islands, the mystical Sawa-i-Lau Caves were sculpted by wind and waves over thousands of years. They are famous as the site of scenes from the famous Brooke Shields movie, The Blue Lagoon .

Bathed in light, the first limestone cavern is easy to access, and you can swim in the cool, crystal-clear water of the deep pool and admire the interesting limestone formations.

To access the inner cave, you have to swim through an underwater tunnel. Locals believe that this inner cavern is the heart of the Yasawas, and that the caves are the final resting place of the 10-headed Fijian God, Ulutini.

Note that the second cave is only accessible when the tide allows. Guides are highly recommended.

  • Boat journey from Denaurau on Viti Levu is up to 3 hours

It’d be a stretch to say that Suva and Nadi have hustle and bustle, but in Fiji you can truly disconnect from everyday life and the rest of the world! They include traditional canoes made entirely from bamboo. For something a little darker, check out the traditional wooden cannibalism forks!

What to do there: As well as the artifacts, there’s some archaeological material that is a lot older to check out. In fact, it dates back 3,700 years! Once you’ve explored the permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions of one of the most popular attractions in Fiji, you have a few options. It’s in the Coral Coast, another of the best places to visit in Fiji. Here, you can see a swathe of flora and fauna that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. For example, the endangered Fijian iguana and the national bird – the kula! There are also flying foxes (which are really bats) and parrots on display in the park.

What to do there: You can take a self-guided walk through the park to try and spot all the animals, or the kids can get a little more hands-on. Yes, joining the junior ranger program is one of the most memorable experiences of visiting Fiji for them! They’ll be able to hand-feed turtles, and the staff might even let mum and dad have a go too. There are a couple of adrenaline-fuelled activities available in the park too – such as the Splash Mountain Jungle Water Slide and the Canopy Flier Zipline. Kula Eco Park is one of the top attractions in Fiji for a day out!

#5 – Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

  • A Fiji must-see for horticulturalists
  • See a number of indigenous and Asian orchids
  • One of the most peaceful points of interest in Fiji

Why it’s awesome: Located at the base of the Sleeping Giant Mountain, near Nadi, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a Fiji must-do. Especially if you’re into landscaped gardens and plants! Originally, this place was established to house a private orchid collection for the famous Canadian TV actor, Raymond Burr, who had a vacation home here. Nowadays, it’s been opened up to the public and it’s a lovely place to stroll around and see more than 30 varieties of orchid, both from Fiji and further afield.

What to do there: If you want to take a break from Fiji’s picturesque beaches and cultural attractions, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a great place to spend half a day or a little longer near Nadi. Explore Fiji’s most popular garden on wooden boardwalks and stone pathways. These will take you over lily ponds and past so many different plants and trees. You could even bring a picnic!

#6 – Mamanuca Islands

https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/castaway-island-mamanucas-group-fiji-1086033926

  • Take a helicopter tour to get a bird’s eye view
  • Located to the northwest of Viti Levu Island
  • How to see all of Fiji from above

Why it’s awesome: When you travel to Fiji, you can’t do a helicopter tour. It just so turns out that the Mamanuca Islands are one of the best places to see from above, and since the archipelago is so close to the main island of Viti Levu Island, you’ll see a fair bit of that too! They’re not just great in a helicopter though – these islands are pretty sweet on land. Take a walk along the white sand beaches or take a dip in the azure waters.

What to do there: Another aspect of the Mamanuca Islands is that the water of them is sublime. So, it just happens that these islands are one of the best places in Fiji to practice water sports! Want something relaxed and stress-free? Then why not try paddle-boarding or a bit of sea kayaking? If you’re looking for a bit more of a thrill, then there’s parasailing, surfing, and jet-skiing here too. You should be able to arrange it through your accommodation!

#7 – Natadola Beach

Natadola Beach

  • Widely considered to be the best beach on the main island of Viti Levu
  • A great place for swimming
  • Lots of water sports on offer here too!

Why it’s awesome: We’ve mentioned that there are some great beaches in Fiji but we haven’t talked about one specifically yet. Well, that has just changed. If you’re staying on Viti Levu, you’re in luck. That’s because Natadola Beach is one of the best on the island! As you’d imagine from a South Pacific Island beach, there are long expanse of sand that runs down to the turquoise water, which is perfectly calm. In fact, this is one of the few beaches in Fiji where you can swim no matter where the tide is.

What to do there: As well as swimming, you can try your hand at a whole host of watersports on Natadola Beach. The breaks here are the perfect conditions for surfing, so it’s a great place to take your first steps on the water. More experienced surfers can head out a little further to find some big waves too. Snorkeling and kayaking can also be enjoyed at this incredible beach, or you could just relax on the sand and catch a tan! Whatever you choose to do, it’s one of the best places in Fiji if you’re looking for a beach!

#8 – Monuriki – Certainly one of the most exotic places to see in Fiji

Monuriki

  • Known as the coral reef capital of the world
  • Deep-sea dive to spot turtles and tropical fish
  • A beautifully colourful underwater experience

Why it’s awesome: Fiji is known as the coral reef capital of the world. That applies to nowhere more than Monuriki Island, one of the best places in Fiji to snorkel and scuba dive. It’s actually one of the Mamanuca Islands that we’ve already mentioned earlier – but Monuriki deserves a mention all to itself! It’s uninhabited, so you won’t be able to stay here. You can take tours to it though, and they’ll be a truly memorable experience!

What to do there: Snorkelling of Monuriki is great, but deep-sea diving is even better. You’ll be mesmerized by brightly coloured tropical fish, lazy turtles, and a rainbow of coral reefs. This really is something to tick off the bucket list, and one of the top Fiji vacation ideas!

#9 – Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in Fiji

Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park

  • One of the best places in Fiji for hiking an outdoor exploring
  • An important archaeological site that dates back more than 2,600 years
  • Check out forests, meadows, and of course, sand dunes!

Why it’s awesome: Head to the southwest corner of Viti Levu to find this incredible national park. Sigatoka Sand Dunes are one of the best places in Fiji for hiking and seeing a variety of landscapes. The sand dunes are the most impressive part! They cover 650 hectares and some can be up to 60 metres high! That may not sound much when compared to a mountain, but you just try and climb to the summit! The park is also an important archaeological site, belonging to a primitive culture which lived here 2,600 years ago.

What to do there: Start off your visit to Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park at the Visitor’s Information Centre. If you’re nervous about getting lost, you can get a guided tour from a local ranger. These last for one, two, or four hours and will take you through meadows, an inland forest, onto a gorgeous beach, and through the dunes which give the national park their name! The dunes are in fact some of the most impressive landmarks in Fiji!

#10 – Udre Udre’s Grave – One of the more unique places to visit in Fiji

Udre Udre’s Grave

  • Visit the final resting place of the most prolific cannibal of all time
  • Said to have eaten more than 800 people
  • Definitely one of the more unusual things to do in Fiji

Why it’s awesome: You’ve seen the old-time films that show cannibalism on South Pacific islands. And, you’ve probably dismissed them as a load of old rubbish really! However, these stories did come from somewhere, and cannibalism is actually a part of Fijian history . Actually, Fiji was home to the most prolific cannibal of all time (that we know of at least), Udre Udre. He is alleged to have eaten the flesh of more than 800 of his enemies! It’s a great story, and seeing his grave is one of the most unusual things to do in Fiji!

What to do there: Right on the north coast of Fiji, this is one of the best places to visit in Fiji if you want to tell your friends back home you’ve gone off the beaten track and seen something a bit weird. Supposedly, Udre Udre kept a stone from each time one of his enemies was grilled. You can see all 800 of them surrounding the grave in Rakiraki!

#11 – Coral Coast and Pacific Harbor

  • Pacific Harbor is the adventure capital of Fiji
  • One of the most scenic parts of the Fijian coastline
  • Lots of things to do on the southern coast of Viti Levu Island

Why it’s awesome: The Coral Coast is quite a lot of the southern shores of Viti Levu. It’s named after the wide bank of coral that protects this part of the island. If you don’t want to stay in a built-up area like Suva or Nadi, it’s one of the best places to stay on Fiji. That’s because there are a number of resorts dotted along with the coast catering to all budgets! Adventurers shouldn’t miss out on Pacific Harbor, the undisputed adventure capital of Fiji!

What to do there: As well as doing extreme sports like skydiving and parasailing from Pacific Harbor, there are some more sedate opportunities too. To the west of the Coral Coast, you’ll find Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park which we mentioned earlier. You can also hike up to Tavuni Hill Fort, go diving in the beautifully blue Beqa Lagoon, or take a river cruise through the rugged and scenic Namosi Highlands. There’s so much to do on the Coral Coast it really is one of the best places to visit in Fiji!

What to Pack for Fiji

Fiji  has a warm  tropical climate  all year round.

The best months for holidaying in regards to  Fiji  weather is late March through to early December.

The wet season is normally from November to April; although rare, cyclones do, at times, hit the area during the wet season.

  • Reef shoes.  Most islands are surrounded by coral and reefs. Sandy shallows also have sinkholes that will suck off flimsy footwear, like flip flops. Make sure to have some well-fitted and sturdy reef shoes and remember to always walk where the locals walk!
  • Snorkel, mask, and underwater camera.  Fiji is a tropical paradise with uncounted underwater wonders. Avoid the fees and the possibility of not being able to rent snorkel gear by bringing your own well-fitted gear.
  • Swimming suits (plural!) –  Fiji is all about frolicking under the sun, lazing at the beach or diving headfirst in its turquoise waters. Make sure to bring more than one swimsuit as no one likes putting on a damp suit!
  • A tropical wardrobe. This should include—for both men and women—shorts, T-shirts, breathable rain gear, a warm jacket or fleece, sturdy footwear, and a wrap.
  • The protection basics – Travellers should stock up on the essentials: sunblock, mosquito/insect repellant containing DEET or a pyrethroid insecticide, sunglasses and a hat.
  • We always pack a sarong, especially in the tropics. Check why here.

See our packing tips:  packing list for smart travel.

Sun-drenched beaches, turquoise lagoons, swaying palm trees – Fiji supplies all the classic images of paradise. No wonder, then, that every year thousands of travellers come to this South Pacific archipelago for the ultimate island escape. With over three hundred islands to choose from, Fiji is an amazingly versatile destination. Whether you’re after a luxury honeymoon retreat, a lively backpacker island or a family-friendly resort you won’t be disappointed. You’ll also find a warm, hospitable people, an intriguing blend of Melanesians, Polynesians and Indians.

Where to go in Fiji

Six of the best resorts, underwater fiji.

With a reliable tropical climate, a good tourist infrastructure, English as its main language and no jabs or pills to worry about, travelling in Fiji is as easy as it gets. As the hub of South Pacific tourism, the country attracts over half a million visitors a year, mostly from Australia and New Zealand, its largest “neighbours” lying over 2000km southeast. Of the northern hemisphere travellers who arrive, many are backpackers from Europe or surfers and scuba divers from North America.

While it can be tempting to spend your whole time in Fiji sunbathing and sipping cocktails from coconuts, there are plenty of activities to lure you away from the beach. Within a ten-minute boat ride of most resorts you can find yourself snorkelling with dolphins and manta rays or scuba diving at pristine coral reefs. In addition, at the exposed edges of the reefs are some of the world’s finest and most consistent surfing breaks . Nature lovers are also spoilt for choice, both underwater and on dry land, and wildlife-spotting opportunities are plentiful, whether you’re seeking turtles, exotic birds or 3m-long tiger sharks.

Away from the resorts is another Fiji waiting to be discovered: a land of stunning mountains, rainforests and remote villages . Here you’ll find fantastically hospitable Fijians living a similar lifestyle to their tribal ancestors. Staying a night or two at a village homestay will give you an authentic insight into ethnic Fijian culture as well as the chance to sample yaqona or kava , the national drink. Fiji is also home to a large Indian community and their influence is seen in the delicious Indian food served in almost every town, Bollywood films showing in the cinema and vibrant Hindu festivals celebrated throughout the year. While Fiji is not renowned for its towns or cities , three are definitely worth taking the time to explore: quaint, colonial-era Levuka, yachting hotspot Savusavu, and Suva, the lively capital city and the best place to party in the South Pacific.

However long you spend in the country you’ll notice an unhurried, good-humoured lifestyle. This is the essence of Fiji Time – an attitude that can be both inspiring and infuriating. Away from the highly organized upmarket resorts, life runs at a different pace; bus and ferry timetables serve more as guidelines and a simple meeting in a village can last for days. It’s best to leave your inner control freak at home – you never know, you may come back a calmer person.

The vast majority of travellers arrive at Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu, the biggest island in the archipelago. Most stay around the suburban tourist hub of Nadi for a day or two to organize travels to other parts of the country, or use it as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding countryside and offshore islands. The most popular destination in Fiji lies visible off Nadi’s coastline – a gorgeous collection of islands known as the Mamanucas. Here you’ll find sublime beaches and tiny coral cays with suitably exotic names such as “Bounty” or “Treasure Island”. Extending north of the Mamanucas are the Yasawa Islands, a string of larger, volcanic islands home to a mixture of budget beach resorts and upmarket boutique accommodation.

Nadi and around

Almost as popular as the Mamanucas and Yasawa Islands, especially with families, are the beach resorts of the Coral Coast along the south coast of Viti Levu. Around an hour’s drive from Nadi, these larger resorts offer good value all-inclusive packages and a great choice of sightseeing tours. Inland is the rugged rural interior of Viti Levu. This region was once home to fierce, cannibalistic hill tribes and is crisscrossed with hiking trails including the route to Fiji’s highest peak, Mount Tomanivi. Heading east along Viti Levu’s south coast brings you to Pacific Harbour, Fiji’s adventure tour capital offering whitewater rafting, jet-ski safaris and world-renowned shark dives off the nearby island of Beqa. Beyond is Suva, Fiji’s cosmopolitan capital city and the hub for sea transport throughout the archipelago.

Of the outer islands, the most accessible are in the Lomaiviti Group, a short trip by boat from the east coast of Viti Levu. Here you’ll find the quirky former capital of Levuka on the island of Ovalau and a good range of budget island resorts – a less commercial alternative to the Mamanucas and Yasawas. Spreading east for hundreds of kilometres is the vast Lau Group. Reached by cargo boat from the mainland, these islands provide a true adventure for the intrepid traveller and the chance to sample Polynesian culture. South of Viti Levu is the snaking shape of Kadavu, a magnet for scuba-divers thanks to the impressive Great Astrolabe Reef.

Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu, is in the northern part of the archipelago. On its south coast is the beautiful sailing anchorage of Savusavu while to the east is Taveuni, Fiji’s lush “Garden Island”. Half of Taveuni is protected as a national park and it’s the best place in Fiji to hike through rainforest and encounter the country’s rare, native birdlife. Offshore is the stunning Rainbow Reef, aptly named after its colourful soft corals. Far north of Vanua Levu, the tiny Polynesian island of Rotuma is politically part of Fiji but so isolated it feels like a different country, with its own language, culture and traditions.

Fijian resorts range from simple beachside bures (traditional thatched huts) with cold-water showers to opulent villas with hardwood floors and private spa pools. With almost a hundred resorts throughout the islands the choice can be overwhelming. To help you decide, we’ve whittled them down to six of the best, each aimed at a different type of traveller.

• Fiji is made up of 333 islands and many tiny islets. Two thirds of Fiji’s islands remain uninhabited.

• The name Fiji is an adaptation of the Tongan pronunciation of “Viti”, originally written by Europeans as “Feejee”.

• Only four of Fiji’s 27 airports have paved runways.

• Of a total population of nearly 875,000, around 512,000 are ethnic Fijians, 290,000 Fiji-Indians and the remainder Chinese, Europeans and various Pacific islanders.

• At New Year on the islands, women play a game called veicaqe moli – “kick the orange”. The winners have to give new clothes to the losers, and the losers’ job is to serve the victors yaqona .

• Around a fifth of ethnic Fijians live a mostly subsistence lifestyle on tribally owned native land (87 percent of all land in the country).

A huge part of Fiji’s appeal lies below the surface of the waves. Don a mask and snorkel and you will find coral reefs shimmering with colourful fish, sea fans dancing in the current and manta rays and reef sharks cruising the lagoons. Throw in crystal-clear water and temperatures that rarely fall below 25°C and you have one of the world’s greatest snorkelling and diving destinations.

Fiji’s ten thousand square kilometres of coral reef twist and turn around every island, and include the world’s third longest barrier reef – the 200km-long Great Sea Reef found off the north coast of Vanua Levu. These amazing structures provide habitats for thousands of species of fish, plants and animals and boast an astonishing biodiversity that’s comparable to that found in rainforests.

The three most common types of reef found in Fiji are fringing reefs , which are attached to an island and offer snorkelling direct from the shore; patch reefs , individual coral reefs found within a lagoon and usually attracting great numbers of reef fish; and barrier reefs , which are separated from the shore by a deep channel and feature steep drop-offs and strong currents. There’s information on Fiji’s best reefs, plus snorkelling and diving advice.

Why Go To Fiji

With its turquoise waters, glittering sands and luxe resorts, Fiji is similar to many other tropical getaways. Likewise, the set of 333 islands caters to lovebirds of all kinds. Plus, adventure-seekers, like surfers and divers, appreciate the archipelago's quality waves and coral reefs. But Fiji differs from other island destinations in its otherworldliness. Since it's more than 1,300 miles from New Zealand's North Island in the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji affords you the delectable feeling of seclusion. You'll be as far from reality as possible when you're sipping Fiji Bitter beer and watching the sun dip below the horizon. Fijian customs will make you feel a million miles away too: Ever tasted the dizzying kava drink? Or watched men defy fire and walk across scalding stones without burning their feet? If not, it's about time you did.

Fiji Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to go to Fiji is whenever you have the chance. This is Fiji we're talking about! Temperatures stay pretty constant through the year, with highs resting in the 80s; however, from November to April, you might have to contend with some tropical storms. For the Fiji experience that you've always dreamed of, the best time to visit is from July to September, but you will have to contend with sky-high prices as this is also peak season. The shoulder seasons are short – May to June and October – but they're nice times to visit since heavy crowds will either have just departed or have yet to descend.

Weather in Fiji

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • You'll switch days  When you fly to Fiji, you'll be crossing over the north-to-south international date line. Adjust your watches and phones to reflect the jump ahead.
  • Skip the cities  You didn't come to Fiji for tourist traps or bustling cities, so stick to the islands' best attributes – the world-class resorts on beautiful shorelines.
  • Drink some kava  This intoxicating drink, made from the Piper methysticum plant (called, unsurprisingly, kava), is a favorite among locals. But some travelers warn that it can make your lips go temporarily numb.

How to Save Money in Fiji

  • Visit in the low season  So what; there might be scattered showers! Visiting between the months of November and April can save you a lot on airfare and accommodations.
  • Look for package deals  Your two largest expenses will be your flight and your  hotel  room. But you can find some great discounts if you book both at the same time.
  • Stick to one isle  Transportation costs for island-hopping can add up, so conserve your currency by sticking to just one of Fiji's gorgeous islands.

Culture & Customs

Although Fiji's official language is English, you will endear yourself to the friendly Fijians by learning a few words of their native Fijian tongue. " Bula " (pronounced mboo-la) is "hello"; " vinaka " (pronounced vee-nah-kah) means "thank you"; “ kere kere ” (kerry kerry) is “please”and " moce " (pronounced mow-they) is "goodbye." If you're staying at a resort and choose to venture into town, dress modestly. When going to a village, avoid wearing a hat, as it will insult the village's chief.

One American dollar (USD) is worth about 2 Fijian dollars (FJD); check the current exchange rate before you arrive.

There are two safety concerns to keep in mind when visiting this tropical paradise: earthquakes and bug bites. Because Fiji is located in an area of seismic activity, earthquakes (that in turn cause tsunamis) are a possibility (albeit a very rare one). The more common threats are insects. Fiji has had reported cases of Zika, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, so talk to your doctor about potential risks before you leave. During rainy season, visitors should also be aware that they can contract the dengue fever from infected mosquitoes. Make sure you are sufficiently covered in bug repellent, especially at night. You'll also want to consult the CDC for potential vaccines.

What to Eat

Fiji offers a variety of cuisine despite being a remote destination. Aside from seafood, Fiji has international cuisine ranging from Italian to Japanese. For some traditional Fijian food, try lovo: meats and vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and baked directly on hot stones. Recent travelers suggested heading to Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant at Port Denarau Marina to try lovo. (Bonus: Several travelers said that a local recommended the restaurant to them.)

No trip to Fiji would be complete without sampling kava, a traditional Fijian beverage. It is made with the pulverized roots of the cava plant and mixed with water. Traditionally, it is served in a coconut shell cup and shared with friends. And if sampling local cuisine isn't enough of a reason to try it, kava may also help to reduce anxiety, which will help get you on Fiji time in no time.

Getting Around Fiji

The best ways to get around Fiji are by bus if you want to explore one of the archipelago's islands, or by ferry if you want to island hop. You can also get to other islands by plane, but this mode of transport is more expensive. Driving a rental vehicle is a good option if you're staying on one of the few islands with acceptable roads, but you can also hire a taxi. You can walk around your choice resort or in Fiji's cities, but to traverse a particular island, walking is not an efficient method. Many international travelers fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN) or Nausori Airport (SUV), both of which can be found on the main island of Viti Levu.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You'll need a passport that's valid for at least six months after your departure date to visit Fiji. You may need to show proof of return or onward travel, as well as proof of sufficient funds for your trip. For more information, visit the U.S. State Department's  website .

The Best Fiji Itineraries for 1 Week 🌴 [2024]

Our selection of the best 1-week itineraries for fiji.

Is spending one week in the same resort really not your style? Want to make the most of your time in Fiji seeing a few different islands? We have just the list of one-week Fiji itineraries for you! Whether you’re travelling with children, on a romantic honeymoon, on a budget, seeking luxury or something else, you’re bound to find something to suit your travel style in this list of the best Fiji itineraries for 1 week.

Destinations Visited in Our Fiji Itineraries for 7 Days

With 333 islands, choosing a destination in Fiji can be pretty overwhelming. So let’s break it down to the main destinations mentioned in the one-week itineraries listed below.

This is Fiji’s largest and main island where most arrive in Fiji via Nadi International Airport . Some of the itineraries below visit several destinations around Viti Levu , all of which are located on the coast and are accessible by road. These Viti Levu destinations include Nadi , Denarau , the Coral Coast , Pacific Harbour , Suva and the Suncoast (Rakiraki) .

Mamanuca Islands and Yasawa Islands

These two island groups are among some of the easiest island groups to reach from Nadi, with a developed tourism scene yet the islands themselves are still remarkably undeveloped. The island groups hold a mix of volcanic islands and small uninhabited coral islands. Read further in The Complete Guide to the Mamanuca Islands and The Complete Guide to the Yasawa Islands .

This is Fiji’s second-largest island located in the northern region of Fiji, about a 1h25min flight from Nadi International Airport . There are two main towns on the island, while the rest of the landscape is made up of small villages, remote resorts, copra and sugar cane plantations, and tropical forest. Find out more about the island in The Complete Guide to Vanua Levu .

Off the southeastern shores of Vanua Levu, Taveuni earns its nickname as the “Garden Island” thanks to its abundance of nature. Around 80% of the island is made up of the Bouma National Heritage Park, while marine reserves and top scuba diving locations are found off its coast. Find out more about Taveuni in The Complete Guide to Taveuni .

Fiji Budget & Backpacking Itinerary for 1 Week

Fiji has a reputation for being an expensive destination to travel but that’s certainly not the case when there’s both budget accommodation and free/cheap activities found across the islands.

For a one-week budget trip to Fiji, we recommend exploring Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu , to eliminate the associated costs of overwater travel . What’s more, Viti Levu has a huge range of experiences for backpackers and budget travellers: from urban to nature, mountains to sea, off-shore islands to inland river excursions, and the list goes on.

See our complete one-week budget itinerary in Fiji Budget & Backpacking Itinerary: 7 Days . Otherwise, check out this quick overview:

Best Fiji Destinations

Mamanuca islands.

32 breathtakingly beautiful islands make up the Mamanucas and they are just a stone’s throw away from Nadi (the international hub). Whether you’re going for a family getaway or a lover’s retreat, the Mamanuca Islands are the perfect destination. These islands offer white sand beaches and protected blue lagoons. Islands like Malolo host family-friendly resorts complete with nannies and kids’ clubs. This enchanting island chain is the perfect setting to make new memories and strengthen long-lasting bonds.

As the international hub, Nadi is a multicultural island town where you can find the very best in dining, shopping and entertainment. Nadi area, you’ll also find a charming paradise on one of the top ten beaches in the world, Natadola. Golfers will enjoy hitting the lush tropical greens of the Natadola Bay Golf Resort. Nadi is an ideal place to get a feel for Fijian culture, souvenir shop and purchase those last-minute necessities after spending some time on the more remote islands.

Denarau Island

Luxury resorts, fine dining and excellent entertainment. Add a splash of island culture and you’ve got Denarau Island. Eight extravagant resorts and an 18-hole championship golf course make Denarau a great place to get away from it all, without getting away from the amenities. Denarau Island is home to numerous festivals and gourmet restaurants, along with some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. For those who want a tropical paradise without leaving the convenience of modern living, Denarau Island is the place to be.

Pacific Harbour

While many places claim to have ‘something for everyone,’ none can compare to the limitlessness of Pacific Harbour. Accommodations range from elegant to economical and activities go from relaxing to pure adrenalin. You can get pampered at rainforest spas, feed sharks on the ocean floor and everything in between. Pacific Harbour is conveniently located on the main island and also serves as the port to such remote paradises as Beqa Island. Whether your version of perfection is a secluded island, a lavish resort or a thrilling ATV ride through the rainforest, you’ll find it at (or from) Pacific Harbour.

A town that has only recently seen tourism, Savusavu is an unspoiled paradise. Most resorts host a minimum number of guests, promising a secluded utopia. You’ll stay at some of the first (and finest) overwater bures in the South Pacific. The soft coral and marine life that surround the coastline make for some of the best snorkeling and diving in the country. With most of the beach town catering to couples, you’ll find romance in its purest and greatest form. If you’re looking for passion in a tropical paradise, look no further than Savusavu.

A town steeped in rich history, Rakiraki offers a fascinating look at Fijian culture. After soaking up the sun on the beach, you can visit such intriguing sites as Navatu Rock or the tomb of chief Ratu Udre Udre. You’ll get an interesting look at Fiji’s first settlements and the grim history that followed. Between Rakiraki and the nearby island of Volivoli, you’ll find some of the best scuba diving on the planet. Dive packages will blow you away as you swim alongside the most beautiful marine species through miles of soft coral.

Home to luxurious resorts and an abundance of rainforests and reefs, Taveuni is an ideal destination for lovers and nature lovers alike. You’ll find secluded resorts that boast the absolute height of luxury, situated between lush rainforests and pristine beaches. Local villages host quaint markets and church visits, so you can get a taste of culture on your stay. With elegance, scenery and culture, Taveuni is the sheer essence of Fiji.

Despite it being Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu is off the tourist trail. Here you’ll find adventure in the form of superb hikes and dolphin encounters. The island boasts some of the best scuba diving in the region. Or you could venture to the southern peninsula to find romance in Savusavu. Wherever you decide to go in Vanua Levu, you’re sure to find a tropical heaven unspoiled by modern living.

Yasawa Islands

20 volcanic islands across the South Pacific make up the Yasawas and they truly have something for everyone. Some islands span 22 kilometers, while others can be circumnavigated by foot in a matter of minutes. Big or small, these islands are home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Without banks or shops, these tropical havens are left completely unspoiled. Best of all, they are some of the most affordable island destinations in all of Fiji.

F iji is a wonderful family travel destination where nature and adventure rule and hospitality is overflowing. What once felt like a destination only reserved for the top of your bucket list, a trip to Fiji with kids, is actually a very doable and one I highly recommend!

There are so many fun things for families to do in Fiji, and I want to highlight those today. However, let’s first look at why you would want to visit Fiji with kids in the first place. Is Fiji a good place for family travel?

Visiting Fiji With Kids

I just returned from a weeklong stay in Fiji, where I saw firsthand what a special place it is for families. On this trip, I stayed at four family-friendly resorts in Fiji and witnessed an incredible number of families making lifelong memories. Fiji Tourism hosted me for this trip. However, all opinions and experiences are my own.

Why Should You Visit Fiji With Kids?

One of the many reasons why Fiji is an ideal family destination is the convenience of English as the main written and spoken language. This eliminates any language barriers that can be daunting for children, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip for the whole family.

I was also very surprised with how affordable Fiji is for families. Rates for resort-style accommodations are much less than in other tropical travel destinations, and many include breakfast.

When meals are not included, the prices of food and drink are very reasonable. With taxes included and tipping not customary (although always welcome), you can dine out for much less than here in the United States. You can even plan a family trip to Fiji for only $5000 , including airfare!

Additionally, most of the family resorts in Fiji have robust complimentary kids’ clubs and optional (or included) nanny service that I noted was very inexpensive.

For example, at the OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort , the Meimei Nanny Service costs 371 FJD for 4 days. This is the equivalent of $165 USD and gives your child (age 6 months to 12 years) nanny service for up to 8 hours per day. This breaks down to around $41 USD per day or $5 USD per hour.

Of course, you don’t need to leave your child with their nanny the entire time. They can even join your family as an extra set of hands during activities.

Another thing I noticed in Fiji is that the pace is slower. They often refer to it as Fiji Time ! This allows families the opportunity to relax and break from the tight schedules present in their day-to-day lives.

Likewise, there are plenty of activities going on at any given time, but they don’t feel rushed. The staff at the resorts I visited exuded patience with the children.

Planning Your Trip To Fiji With Kids

Are you ready to plan your family trip to Fiji? First, book your airfare with Fi ji Airways . Direct flights from the United States are available from Los Angeles and San Franciso, as well as Vancouver, Canada.

Next, choose one of my many wonderful, family-friendly resorts in Fiji. I can personally recommend the Shangri-La Fiji , OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort , InterContinential Fiji , and Castaway Island .

If your family trip to Fiji is more than five days, I recommend splitting it up between two resorts. Choosing one on the main island, Viti Levu, for the first half of your stay and then moving out to an island resort like Castaway Island would give you a wonderful opportunity to experience more of what Fiji has to offer.

Once your trip is planned, you can start thinking about which activities you want to do with your children while in Fiji. I was very surprised at how much there was to do beyond the beaches, such as EcoTrax, the Sigatoka River Cruise, ziplining, village tours, and more! Next, I will share some of the most amazing things to do in Fiji with kids.

Things To Do in Fiji With Kids

The activities below are in addition to the activities and amenities at your hotel. You can easily keep yourself entertained without leaving the resort.

However, it would be a shame to travel to Fiji and not get to experience all it has to offer. The ecosystem is very diverse!

Before buying tickets to or making reservations for any of the below activities, make sure to see where they are on a map. Fiji is very large, made up of over 300 islands!

However, many of these activities are located within an hour or two of the Nadi International Airport and close to many of the resorts on Viti Levu.

Also, read through descriptions throughout to ensure activities are appropriate for your children’s ages and interest levels.

1. Sigatoka River Safari

The 4.5-hour Sigatoka River Safari was one of the highlights of my trip to Fiji. It allows you to experience the natural beauty of Fiji as horses and wild animals dot the shores of the Sigatoka River.

At the same time, it is a profound cultural experience as you properly enter a traditional Fijian village, joining them for a traditional Kava ceremony, lunch, and daily activities.

I wish my two kids could have experienced this with me. It undoubtedly would have impacted them for life!

2. Island Day Trip

If you are staying at a large resort but want to experience the island life, a South Seas Island Day Trip is for you.

For this full-day tour, your family will travel by boat from Port Denarau to private South Sea Island, where you can swim, snorkel, and enjoy a wonderful BBQ lunch.

There is also a traditional Fijian make performance, and add-on activities are available.

At EcoTrax Fiji , your family can ride along an old sugar cane rail line on electric-assisted bicycles before stopping at a secluded beach to enjoy fresh fruit and coconut.

I had the opportunity to experience EcoTrax while staying at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Resort nearby, and it was one of the coolest things I have experienced. They have seats for children, too.

4. Navua River Tubing

On this half-day Navua River Tubing Adventure , you can enjoy a scenic boat ride up the Navua River, admiring the diverse landscape before visiting an authentic Fijian village.

After that, enjoy a waterfall swim and lunch before you begin tubing back downriver, interspersed with gentle rapids.

5. Kula Wild Adventure Park

The Kula Wild Adventure Park , located near the OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort, is a fun place for kids of all ages.

This park offers everything from animals and self-guided nature tours to a 100-meter jungle waterslide and ziplining!

6. Full-Day Mamanuca Sailing & Snorkeling Trip

Snorkeling right offshore in Fiji is better than most places; however, when you get out into the ocean, it’s even better!

On this popular Sailing and Snorkel Tour , your family can enjoy the warm breeze as you cruise around the Mamanuca Islands on a large catamaran, stopping at the best snorkeling spots. A buffet lunch is included.

7. Sigatoka Sand Dunes

Along the Coral Coast, just a ten-minute drive from Sigatoka town, you will find Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park , a 360-acre dune system in Fiji.

The park is open daily from 8 AM until 4:30 PM and is a great budget-friendly eco-adventure for families. Visitors can enjoy two walking trails and spectacular bird watching at this beautiful park.

8. Zipline Tip & Cave Exploration

Boasting a solid 5-star review, this 5-hour Zipline and Cave Tour is sure to impress your kids! Make your way through the treetops along 16 giant zip lines, enjoy lunch, and then explore limestone caves.

9. Cloud 9 Floating Pizzeria

This was a place that I will never forget! Cloud 9 is a man-made floating island with a wood-fired pizza oven, full bar, daybeds, DJ, jumping platform, and snorkeling. I even saw a sea turtle while snorkeling here!

It’s located near Castaway Island Resort, and while it is geared more toward adults, children are welcome. Personally, I think this is better suited for older kids and teenagers, and I recommend coming first thing in the day for the most family-friendly environment.

10. Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Located just 15 minutes north of Nadi, Garden of the Sleeping Giant can be a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and the excitement of the resort.

Walk along boardwalks as you explore this rainforest, brimming with exotic plants and flowers. In fact, the orchids here are some of the most beautiful and diverse in the world.

11. Sabeto Hotspring Mudpool

At Sabeto Hotspring and Mudpool , your family can enjoy a natural therapeutic adventure that they will never forget as they coat themselves head-to-toe in mud!

Enjoy shopping and relaxing in this unique environment. You can add a one-hour massage to your natural mud wrap, mud pool bath, and hot pool bath for as low as 70 FJD, the equivalent of $30 USD! Remember how I said that Fiji is a great value?

Many visitors opt to combine this activity with the Garden of the Sleeping Giant listed above.

More Things To Do With Kids In Fiji

This list is hardly exhaustive, as there are so many things to do in Fiji with children and teenagers.

Gauge their interests, and you may find that they would rather learn pottery at a local Fiji village or even get Scuba certified.

Other families may opt to stay on resort property at all times, taking advantage of amenities, kids’ clubs, and scheduled activities like making fish houses with Moses at Shangri-La.

There is no right or wrong way to experience Fiji with kids, only memories to be made!

Find Out The Best Time To Visit Fiji - Explore Nature Activities

Planning a trip to Fiji? Make sure you get the best of it by finding out the perfect time to enjoy the country. Fiji, an archipelago in the South Pacific, is synonymous with crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a warm, welcoming culture. This idyllic destination is a haven for adventurers, honeymooners, and families alike, offering many activities set against the backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty. Traveloka will navigate you through the best things to do in Fiji, the best time to visit, and the most popular attractions that make Fiji a bucket-list destination for travelers around the globe.

Best Time to Visit Fiji

fiji travel destinations

Shutterstock.com

The best time to visit Fiji largely depends on what you're looking for in your tropical getaway, considering factors like weather, tourism volume, and prices. However, a consensus among travelers and experts points to the period from late May to early October as the prime time for visiting. Here's why:

1. Weather Conditions

During these months, Fiji enjoys its dry season, characterized by lower rainfall, less humidity, and cooler temperatures compared to the rest of the year. The weather is generally sunny and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 26°C to 30°C (about 79°F to 86°F), making it ideal for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring the islands.

2. Water Clarity

The dry season also coincides with the best water conditions for diving and snorkeling, two of Fiji's most sought-after activities. Visibility is at its peak during this time, often exceeding 30 meters (about 100 feet), allowing divers and snorkelers to fully appreciate the vibrant coral reefs and marine life.

3. Festivals and Cultural Events

Visiting Fiji during this period also offers the opportunity to experience some of the country's vibrant cultural festivals. The Bula Festival, usually held in July, and the Hibiscus Festival, in August, are among the most popular, showcasing traditional Fijian dance, music, and cuisine.

4. Tourism Considerations

While this is considered the peak season for tourism, leading to higher prices and more crowded attractions, planning your trip early can help mitigate these issues. Booking accommodations and flights well in advance ensures better deals and availability.

Off-Peak Season, Why Not?

If you're more inclined towards a quieter visit or are looking for better deals, consider the shoulder seasons just before and after the peak period, late October to early December and late February to early April. These times offer a mix of dry and wet weather conditions, with fewer tourists and potentially lower prices. However, be prepared for occasional showers and higher humidity.

Late May to early October offers the quintessential Fiji experience with its favorable weather, excellent conditions for water-based activities, and vibrant cultural events. However, Fiji's welcoming spirit and tropical beauty can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its unique charm and opportunities for adventure.

Things To Do in Fiji

1. Snorkeling and Diving

If you ever heard Fiji often called as "Soft Coral Capital of the World," then it is for a good reason. The Great Astrolabe Reef and the Rainbow Reef are just two of the many sites where divers and snorkelers can marvel at the vibrant underwater ecosystems teeming with marine life.

2. Island Hopping

With over 300 islands, Fiji offers endless opportunities for exploration. Take a day cruise or charter a private boat to discover secluded beaches, traditional villages, and stunning landscapes. The Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands are particularly popular for their pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.

3. Cultural Experiences

Visiting the country would never be complete without exploring the Fijian culture in a local village. Participate in a traditional kava ceremony, enjoy a Fijian lovo feast, and watch mesmerizing cultural performances. Understanding the local customs and traditions is a profound way to connect with Fiji's soul.

4. Adventure Activities

For the thrill-seekers, Fiji's diverse landscapes offer an array of adventure activities. Go zip-lining through the rainforest, surfing at Cloudbreak, or hiking in the lush interiors of the islands like Taveuni and Kadavu. The Sigatoka River Safari offers a unique combination of adventure and cultural immersion.

Taveuni is also a prime spot for bird watching, with numerous endemic species. The island’s dramatic landscape, ranging from volcanic peaks to coral reefs, offers diverse activities from scuba diving to exploring ancient ruins.

2. Levuka Historical Port Town

Levuka, Fiji's former capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers a glimpse into the country's colonial past. Walking through Levuka is like stepping back in time, with well-preserved 19th-century buildings lining its streets. Visitors can explore the town's historical sites, including the Levuka Public School, the oldest operating public school in the Pacific, and the Royal Hotel, the oldest hotel in the region. Cultural tours and visits to nearby villages provide deeper insights into Fiji's history and traditions.

Cloud 9 is Fiji's unique floating bar and pizzeria, offering an unparalleled experience in the middle of the crystal-clear waters of the Mamanuca Islands. This two-level platform features an Italian wood-fired pizzeria and a bar serving a selection of cocktails and drinks. Guests can sunbathe, swim, and snorkel right off the deck, making it a perfect day trip for those looking to relax and enjoy the beauty of Fiji's marine environment. Accessible by boat, Cloud 9 provides a one-of-a-kind setting for enjoying the Pacific Ocean's beauty.

4. Kula Wild Adventure Park

Located on the Coral Coast, Kula Wild Adventure Park is Fiji’s largest family fun park and a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. The park serves as both an amusement park and a sanctuary for native species, where visitors can interact with animals like iguanas, snakes, and a variety of bird species. It offers educational tours that highlight conservation efforts, zip-lining through the forest canopy, and water slides that provide fun for the entire family. Kula Wild Adventure Park is dedicated to the preservation of Fiji's natural heritage, making it a fun and informative experience for visitors of all ages.

5. Nadi’s Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, located in Nadi, is one of the largest Hindu temples in the Southern Hemisphere. This vibrant and colorful temple showcases traditional Dravidian architecture and is adorned with intricate carvings, frescoes, and statues of Hindu deities. Visitors are welcomed to explore the temple grounds and observe rituals and ceremonies. It’s a place of spiritual significance that also offers insight into Fiji’s multicultural community and the Hindu traditions practiced by Fiji's Indian population.

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park presents a unique landscape of archaeological significance. These impressive dunes offer scenic walks and the chance to uncover ancient pottery shards and fossils.

7. Sawa-i-Lau Caves

9. Beqa Lagoon

10. The Yasawa Islands

The Yasawa Islands are a chain of stunningly beautiful islands in Fiji, known for their dramatic landscapes, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters.
