Machu Picchu Tours & Treks

Clouds rising above the mountains behind. the ruins of Machu Picchu, in Peru

As the mist lifts off the mountains and over the Inca ruins, Machu Picchu evokes an otherworldly feeling

It’s one of the world’s most incredible archaeological sites, with a breathtaking location to match. With all that Machu Picchu has to offer, it’s easy to understand why so many are drawn to the visitor heartland of Peru . The ultimate decision is how to get there. Choose a trek or take the train? You could hike through cloud forests along the classic Inca Trail, fulfil your Andes experience on the Quarry Trail or challenge yourself on the Choquequirao trek – it's up to you. We don’t need to tell you why the adventure is worth your while. Our local leaders will keep you safe, informed and inspired every step of the way.

Our Machu Picchu trips

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Machu Picchu highlights

Which route is right for you.

With its spectacular natural scenery and profound cultural encounters, the Inca Trail is an international beacon for trekking. Attracting thousands of hikers each year, it's a challenging yet rewarding hike that stays with you for a lifetime. Although rated moderate, the relentless uphill (and downhill) hiking is tough - the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.

For an impressive hike off the beaten path, consider the Inca Quarry Trail. This lesser-known trek offers the same magical scenery of the Andes mountains, passing through local villages and visiting three smaller archaeological sites the other trails don’t. Another bonus is that the hike doesn’t require a permit – so once you book, you’re set.

Take your boots further with a challenging eight-day hike moving through high-altitude cloud forests, over mega mountain passes and along an ancient trail leading to the well-preserved Inca city ruins of Choquequirao. This trail might be secluded and not for the faint-hearted but it's also one adventure you'll never forget, and that's a promise.

Meet our team

Machu Picchu travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is a magnificent reminder of the power and ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

The ancient citadel, built in the 15th century, was abandoned only 100 years later, and many mysteries remain.

Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1983 and announced as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu makes a lasting impression.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Overlooking the Urubamba River, the site of Machu Picchu sits above the Sacred Valley – located in the Cusco region of Peru.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

  • Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
  • Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
  • Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Can I still hike if I take the train?

So, you want to experience the Inca Trail but aren't quite up for the entire hike?

The one-day option takes you by train part of the way where you hop off and trek the trade highway of the ancient Inca empire.

You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the afternoon to take in the views of Machu Picchu.

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

You can visit Machu Picchu all year round.  The most popular time, and therefore the most crowded, is in June and July.

Low cloud cover during the dry season from April to October also means cold nights on hiking trails, so you'll need thermals for a good night’s sleep.

The wet season is from November to March. Temperatures rise and the region receives heavy rainfall, so waterproofs are essential if you're hiking. If you don't mind a bit of rain, the plus side is that crowds are smaller. If you want to hike the Inca Trail, note that it closes every year in February for maintenance.

Is hiking the only way to get to Machu Picchu?

On all of our trips that visit Machu Picchu, you can choose the rail journey instead of the hike – simply specify while booking that you’d prefer the train option. There's no extra cost for this, though please note fees may apply if you decide to change to the train option after your Inca Trail permit has already been purchased.

Learn more about taking the train to Machu Picchu

Can you get to Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can. Starting with an early rise in the morning, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, then a 2.5-hour train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

You will have a couple of hours to visit Machu Picchu and then return to Cusco the same way.

None of our trips visit Machu Picchu this way, as we believe it doesn’t allow enough time to explore (and really enjoy) the site and the Sacred Valley area.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found deep in the cloud forest at 2440 m (7972 ft) above sea level, sitting at 1000 m (3280 ft) lower than Cusco.

What does this mean for you? In terms of altitude, you're unlikely to experience any altitude issues at Machu Picchu itself.

But be aware, trekking to Machu Picchu involves walking up and down several steep stairs, ramps and terraces at various altitudes, which can be strenuous.

Will the altitude affect me?

Most people start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the causes and effects of travelling at altitude. Monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.

It is essential to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader immediately if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have health concerns before the trip, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

Do I need a permit to hike to Machu Picchu?

Everyone hiking to Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail or the shorter Inca Trail Express requires a permit. You don't need a permit to trek via the Quarry or Choquequirao trails.

If you do the Inca Trail with Intrepid, our adventure consultants secure your permit for you so you can focus on getting excited – just make sure you have your passport details handy at the time of booking.

Permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking well in advance is critical.

We endeavour to purchase your permit within two working days of receiving all necessary information.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

For a day trip exploring Machu Picchu, we recommended taking a small backpack with the essentials: sunscreen, hat, water bottle (filled before departing), a few snacks and mosquito repellent. It helps to wear breathable pants, a long shirt and a waterproof jacket – since the UV index is higher in the Andes and the site is prone to rainfall.

If you plan to trek before visiting Machu Picchu, read our detailed packing instructions in your Essential Trip Information.

What is Wayna Picchu?

Wayna Picchu (also known also as Huayna Pichu or Wayna Pikchu) means ‘young peak’ in Quechua – although the mountain appears anything but young, towering behind Machu Picchu.

Known as the ‘stairs of death’, the hair-raising climb takes about three hours to return. More recently, a cap of 400 people a day has been introduced on the number of visitors allowed to climb.

Can I climb Wayna Picchu with Intrepid Travel?

We have performed risk assessments on all our optional activities, and unfortunately, we don't consider climbing Wayna Picchu a safe activity at this stage.

Reaching Wayna Picchu involves climbing steep, narrow and exposed sets of stairs, and we just can't guarantee your safety.

Our leaders are specifically prohibited from assisting you in visiting Wayna Picchu.

What are the toilet facilities like at Machu Picchu?

There are public toilets located at the main entrance of Machu Picchu and none after entering the site – so make sure you time your stop before heading off to explore.

Take some coins with you as there is a small fee to use the toilet facilities.

What does the Rainforest Alliance tick of approval mean?

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization. It is working to build strong forests, healthy agricultural landscapes and thriving communities.

The green frog seal shows that an enterprise has been audited to meet environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.

The Rainforest Alliance recognizes Intrepid as one of Peru's top certified tourism businesses.

Can I visit Machu Picchu if I have a disability?

Yes, but of course it will depend on your level of disability, fitness and what support will be available to you.

People who are visually impaired have completed the Inca Trail (with the right support crew, of course).

Contact us to discuss your particular circumstances and we can assess it from there.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Eden Reforestation Projects

Eden Reforestation Projects are helping to mitigate climate change by restoring forests worldwide; they also hire locally and create job opportunities within vulnerable communities. Lost City, found

Simply put, Machu Picchu is one of those places that every single traveller should experience at least once in their lives. Perched on a ridge high above the Sacred Valley and protected from the invading Spaniards, it survives to this day as the best-preserved relic of Inca civilization. And while it’s commonly referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” the Inca themselves always knew where it was. Thankfully, their descendants have opened it up to the rest of us to tour, explore, learn, and tap into the unbelievable calm this sacred place stirs in those who come here. For a so-called lost city, it’s a great place to find yourself.

Best Machu Picchu Tours Reviews

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Leonard Ms. Roxiana(Lima), Mr. Daniel(Inca), Mr. Percy( Cusco), Mr. Alex (rainbow mountain) and all the drivers for orchestrating such a flawless trip. This journey has been unlike any other I've experienced, thanks to the impeccable execution and attention to detail provided by both of you. Your daily updates and prompt responses truly set the standard for customer service. Each of our tour guides was a consummate professional, ensuring our well-being and going above and beyond to accommodate any anything we encountered or wanted to explore. This trip has truly been worth every penny spent. From the moment of our arrival to our departure, we were impeccably cared for. Thank you once again for an unforgettable experience!
My husband and I traveled with Kantu Tours back in March for our honeymoon. Waldir and all tour guides that they paired us with were amazing. All tour guides were knowledgable, all hotels we stayed at were close to the town centers and clean. One thing to be mindful of for this tour is it is a lot more walking and hiking than you may think. Rainbow mountain and Lake Humanty are steep hikes on uneven gravel. We are from Florida so we were worried about elevation sickness but took elevation sickness meds and also drank or chewed coca leaves any time offered or in the morning and never got sick. Peru is absolutely beautiful and all locals are very nice from our experience. I would highly recommend Kantu Tours to anyone wanting to visit Peru.
My experience was amazing! This was a trip of a lifetime for me. I enjoyed the 5 day Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Maras Moray. I don’t have any complaints regarding the service provided by Tourradar. Once in Peru, Kantu Tours provided excellent services. The staff for a majority of the tour were professional and friendly. I would book another tour in the future with Tourradar.

"The tour was excellent and the guides were amazing . I would not recommend to do two long 15-16 days back to back . Some individuals on our tour group had the lake and Mountain tours days separated with shorter days in between giving them time to rest . Where as our tour , we were not given the option . I would highly recommend this tour and will use this tour agency again in the future but will Analyze the itinerary in detail prior to sending in deposit .

"Great itinerary includes many sites/activities. Our guide Ernesto at Cusco was very nice, knowledgeable, and told us a lot of history about Machu Picchu and Inca empire. We had a lot of fun. Strongly recommend! One thing to pay attention to is that Rainbow mountain is at high altitude, visitors potentially may develop altitude sickness.

  • Contact your airline for detailed information regarding baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height).
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.

  • Long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and insect repellent are recommended for some activities, especially in the Amazon on the tour extension.
  • Binoculars are handy for a closer look at local wildlife and scenery.
  • A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when other facilities are not readily available while on the road.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).

These high altitudes can sometimes cause difficulties for travelers who have heart problems or respiratory ailments. If you suffer from any of these conditions, please speak to your healthcare provider regarding any potential health risks.
  • Even healthy travelers may sometimes experience altitude sickness, a temporary condition featuring symptoms of headache, fatigue, nausea, and light-headedness. Until your body acclimates to the higher altitudes, we suggest that you stay hydrated and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol.
  • Take proper care with sun exposure, as the sun can be especially strong in some of the regions on this tour.
  • Drink bottled water only. Refrain from ingesting tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they’re cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Peruvian cuisine reflects both the country’s indigenous cultures as well as European colonial and Pacific Rim influences. Staples include grains, like quinoa, maize, and rice, as well beans, potatoes, and meat. Ceviche, traditionally raw sea bass marinated with lime and chilies, is a national dish. Adventurous eaters may want to try cuy, or roasted guinea pig that’s cooked over an open fire. You can also raise a toast with Peru’s famous pisco, the delicious (and sour) white-grape brandy.
  • Peru operates on 220 volts and uses Types A or C plugs with two flat pins or two round pins, respectively.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in some hotels in this region may not be as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply. In more remote locations, internet access may be limited and is not guaranteed.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Peru is five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the same as Eastern Time (ET). Peru does not observe daylight saving time.
  • On the tour extension, Iquitos is 1 hour behind ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York City, it’s noon in Peru from November through March and 11am from April through October.
  • You will use the Peruvian sol in Peru.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information. International travel is, by its very nature, unpredictable. We must therefore reserve the right to change this itinerary, without advance notice, to meet with local conditions at the time of travel. We appreciate your understanding. Machu Picchu Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The most popular for the availability of time of tourists is the Full Day tour to Machu Picchu. However, there are also other very good options such as the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu Tour by train in 2 days and more.

From Aguas Calientes it can take 30 minutes by bus to go up to the entrance of Machu Picchu. If you consider yourself an adventurer, you can also walk up. In this case, the approximate trekking time is 1 hour.

The temple of the condor is one of the most striking attractions of Machu Picchu. The Incas arranged a natural rock formation and it was carved in the shape of wings next to another rock that forms the head and wings.

If you want to enjoy Machu Picchu on dates with fewer tourists, favorable weather conditions and less rainfall, the answer would be mid-April to mid-May and mid-September to mid-October.

The rainy season is approximately from December to March.

Our happy travellers rave about Peru

Highly recommended.

Approach Tours delivered an exceptional journey that left an everlasting impression. Our group became like a tight-knit family, and our guide, went above and beyond with his knowledge and warmth. Highlights included witnessing majestic condors, exploring captivating Lake Titicaca’s floating islands, and experiencing the awe-inspiring wonder of Machu Picchu. The intimate group size fostered genuine connections and allowed us to create cherished memories. Approach Tours’ attention to detail and personalized care ensured our comfort and safety throughout. Highly recommended for a unique and unforgettable adventure in Peru.

I was astounded

Loved the Santa Catalina Convent. I was astounded at seeing the Juanita Mummy up close. Very luck to see a condor (that was THE highlight for me). I also really enjoyed Lake Titicaca and walking on the floating islands, and boat ride in the reed boat –very cool.

Pisac were surprisingly stunning

Our biggest highlight was meeting the other travellers and the laughs we had together. The day on Lake Titicaca was very interesting. Machu Pichu was amazing of course but the ruins in Pisac were surprisingly stunning. Climbing up to Ollantaytambo, Puno, the necropolis of Sillustani, all of these sights were amazing. We were worried about the elevation, but the timing Approach built in to adjust was good. Thanks!

So happy we booked this trip

The entire trip was amazing. The day on Lake Titicaca was outstanding; Machu Picchu day – outstanding; Arequipa – great; loved time in Colca Valley & Sacred Valley. Activities where we met locals & interacted with them was great. The group size made the trip – very enjoyable & efficient – can’t imagine being in a bigger group. Overall this was an outstanding trip!! So happy we booked this trip with you – felt well cared for & safe. Plus great guides & got to see main highlights in each area we went to.

So many highlights

Joe is a great guy – always there for us! Couldn’t ask for more! Support from local guide – exceptional! So many highlights: Condors; Lake Titicaca; floating islands; lunch with knitting men; afternoon with family – dancing; Sacred Valley; Machu Picchu; San Pedro Market; churches; magical lunches; pisco sours; many more!

This trip with Approach Tours has been my most memorable

I have been traveling solo for 15 years and this trip with Approach Tours has been my most memorable. Our group was certainly like family and as for Joe, our guide, to say the least was the kindest and most helpful of all gurus. We enjoyed our meals and free time together and the magnificence of Machu Picchu was beyond my wildest dreams. The Spanish guides were excellent too, and I actually added some words to my vocabulary. I cannot say enough about Approach Tours, your efforts paid off immensely. Many thanks to Daniel, Julie, and off course Joseph!

How to Travel to Machu Picchu

Don’t get lost when you visit the Lost City of the Incas.

machu picchu tour from toronto

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

Every year, millions of people visit the imposing and mysterious Incan citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru. But getting to the massive agricultural terraces, intricate stone constructions, and epic hilltop views of this UNESCO World Heritage site isn't cheap, and it involves some trickier-than-usual logistics. Here's how to expertly navigate your way to Peru's most famous destination, plus our top tips for enjoying your visits to the nearby cities of Cusco and Aguas Calientes on your way.

Reasons to Visit

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most dreamed-about destinations . Mystery is at the center of Machu Picchu's appeal, as the city holds many secrets about the ancient Incan Empire. Knowledge-seekers will find plenty of interesting tidbits to mull over about the city's archaeological significance and the various scientific and religious practices of the Incans who built the magnificent site.

Alongside this adventure through time, a trip to Machu Picchu offers an opportunity to experience Peruvian culture and gastronomy . If you stay a while, you can even make trips to many of the country's other historical wonders, like the perplexing and enormous images etched into the hills of the Nazca Valley , the origins of which are not entirely understood. Throw in a few dishes of tangy ceviche, a rainbow-striped mountain , a desert oasis that looks more like a painting than a real place, and many pisco sours to wash it all down, and you've got a fantastic trip in one of the world's most naturally beautiful countries .

Best Time to Visit

Machu Picchu is open year-round. October through April is the official rainy season, but it can rain at any time. And while peak season is July and August, you should always expect crowds. Sundays can be the most crowded, because that's when people who live in the Cusco province are allowed into the site for free, in addition to the daily visitor limit.

Morning? Afternoon? There is no perfect time to visit Machu Picchu. These days, the site is crowded at all hours and the weather is unpredictable. However, during the rainy season, the mornings are most likely to be foggy. Depending on your disposition, fog ruins the view or adds a patina of mystery to it. Afternoons can be slightly less crowded as day-trippers return to the train station for their trip back to Cusco.

How to Get Acclimated to the Altitude

The last thing you need on your day in Machu Picchu is a case of altitude sickness . Wherever you're coming from is probably much, much lower than Cusco (over 11,000 feet) or Machu Picchu (just shy of 8,000 feet). Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, so you can adjust gradually and avoid common symptoms like nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Unless you've booked a trip to Machu Picchu that requires an overnight stay in Cusco, we recommend immediately taking the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (officially called Machu Picchu Pueblo), the town nearest Machu Picchu. Spend a night or two getting used to the relatively low elevation of Aguas Calientes, at about 6,700 feet, then explore Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco. You can also spend time elsewhere in the Sacred Valley, which, by nature, is lower in elevation than the surrounding mountains. Avoid alcohol and physical exertion while acclimatizing and drink as much water or coca tea as you can stand to help your body slowly adjust to the thinner air.

How to Get There

If Machu Picchu is your goal, you will have to fly into the capital of Lima and then catch a connecting flight to Cusco. From there, the easiest way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes, a scenic 3.5-hour trip each way along tracks that run right along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, with dramatic canyon walls on either side. However, note that the so-called Cusco train station is actually in the nearby town of Poroy. It's a cheap taxi ride, but give yourself at least an hour to get from central Cusco to the train station. Traffic in Cusco can be brutal and seemingly never-ending road work makes things even more congested.

Taking the Train

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

There are three train companies to choose from: Inca Rail , Peru Rail , and the Belmond Hiram Bingham train . The Hiram Bingham service is on a gorgeous train gleaming with brass and polished wood and includes a white tablecloth meal with wine during your journey. It's also much more expensive than Inca Rail or Peru Rail, both of which offer comfortable passage on different types of trains — including ones designed with panoramic windows for an additional fee. Whichever train you choose, book as far in advance as possible. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in some months.

If train tickets from Cusco are sold out, all is not lost. Try to buy another train ticket to Aguas Calientes that departs from the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, or vice versa. Taxis and minivans between Ollantaytambo and Cusco (just over an hour each way) are plentiful. If you have the time, plan an overnight in Ollantaytambo to check out the town, which still features many Incan-built streets and buildings, as well as the archaeological site of the same name. Arrive as early as possible at the site to enjoy the sunrise light and beat the tour buses.

You can also stay overnight in Urubamba, a 20-minute drive from Ollantaytambo, which has a bevy of luxury and boutique hotels such as Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa ; Sol y Luna, Relais & Châteaux ; and Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness .

How to Get Tickets

Even when you buy your ticket in advance, guides are required at Machu Picchu, whether you're on an organized tour or traveling independently. Hire one outside the gates, or make a booking in Aguas Calientes.

To control overtourism at Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government has set up a ticketing system , split up into five different circuits. Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost approximately $42 for adults and $20 for students and minors. When you book online, you will be able to see exactly how many tickets are available for that day. On the day of your visit, you will choose between one of the five circuits. The stricter controls help to protect the site from the effects of too many visitors. Before you book, carefully look at the circuits and see which landmarks they include.

You'll need a separate ticket to climb Huayna Picchu (Circuit 4 + Wayna Picchu Mountain). The view looking down on the Incan ruins is a highlight for many but be aware that some sections of this strenuous trail are very narrow and steep. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Go at 10 a.m.; there's a better chance any clouds will have lifted by then.

You can also climb to the peak of Machu Picchu, but this too requires a separate ticket (Macchupicchu Mountain + Circuit 3) and good knees. The trail is almost entirely stairs. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Although it was open in the past, you will also need a separate ticket to make the short walk to the Inca Bridge (Circuit 1 or 2 + Inka Bridge). It's less than an hour round trip along a mostly flat trail to check out a precarious trail, now closed, which the Incas built along a rock face. The newest route, as of 2021, to Huchyu Picchu (Circuit 4 + Huchuypicchu Mountain) is also available with a separate ticket. It's shorter and easier than the other mountain hikes and you'll get a unique perspective of the ancient city.

The Inca Trail and Other Treks

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

The other way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of an organized multiday Machu Picchu trek along the Inca Trail, a section of one of the hundreds of Incan roads built as the empire expanded. It might sound intimidating, but thousands of people make this trek every year. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes to Machu Picchu, with varying durations and levels of comfort (though all require camping). Note that the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is closed for the entire month of February every year for maintenance.

For a different kind of Peru experience, some tour operators combine a visit to the iconic site with other activities or less-trodden routes to equally impressive sights in the Peruvian highlands. For example, the Inca Jungle Tour combines hiking, biking, rafting, and zip-lining on your way to Machu Picchu, and luxury tour operator andBeyond offers several Machu Picchu itineraries.

You can also drive (most of the way) to Machu Picchu from Cusco to the town of Hydroelectrica (there's a hydroelectric plant there). From there it's a three-hour hike up to Aguas Calientes and then on to Machu Picchu. Many tour companies in Cusco offer this route as a one- or two-day trip using private vans. Some of the most popular alternative routes include Salkantay Mountain, the second city of Choquequirao, and the Lares region.

Salkantay Mountain

For those who prefer a less crowded experience or want to see and experience other aspects of Peru on their way to Machu Picchu, there are many hiking alternatives: the second most popular way to hike to Machu Picchu is around massive Salkantay Mountain, one of the most imposing peaks in the Peruvian Andes at 20,569 feet. Many tour companies offer Salkantay Treks, but Apus Peru, an established and well-regarded Cusco tour company with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, offers an express trek , which shaves a day off the normal itinerary for those who want to push their physical limits on their way to Machu Picchu.

Choquequirao

Travelers interested in archaeology should consider the Choquequirao trek with a Machu Picchu extension. This itinerary includes spectacular (but very tough) hiking in the steep Apurimac Canyon and exploration of the Choquequirao archaeological site before arriving in Aguas Calientes and then exploring Machu Picchu.

The Lares Adventure from Mountain Lodges of Peru offers a great combination of Andean hiking and cultural encounters within Quechua communities before arriving in Aguas Calientes to explore the citadel. Other tour companies offer treks through the Lares region, but only this itinerary includes luxury accommodations in their own lodges and full service along the way.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Unfortunately, there are no ancient Incan hotels you can stay in when you arrive at Machu Picchu, and even those who arrive by the Inca Trail usually do so with camping tents. The closest you can get is the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge , which gives you easy access to the site, but you'll be far away from the dining and shopping of Aguas Calientes — either a strenuous 90-minute climb down the mountain or a harrowing 30-minute drive.

Where to Stay in Aguas Calientes

For a luxury stay in Aguas Calientes, you have two main options: the elegant Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo , located near the train station, and design-forward Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel , a boutique property near the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain. But there are dozens of mid-range options, too, plus super-affordable hostels for backpackers like Nativus Hostel , which also has private rooms.

Where to Stay in Cusco

Cusco has more than its share of large, full-service hotels including Inkaterra La Casona , an 11-suite hotel in a 16th-century mansion; Belmond Hotel Monasterio in a former Jesuit seminary; the museum-like JW Marriott El Convento Cusco ; and the stately Palacio del Inka, A Luxury Collection Hotel . If a contemporary boutique is more your style, try El Mercado or Atiq Boutique Hotel .

Best Restaurants

When you're in Machu Picchu, there's a casual cafe and bar with a lovely deck just outside the entrance gates, but the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge's buffet lunch is your only sit-down-restaurant option. It's very good, if pricey. You can always pack your own lunch to eat when you get to Machu Picchu, though, and look forward to a celebratory meal when you make it back to Aguas Calientes or Cusco.

Where to Eat and Drink in Aguas Calientes

As a whole, Aguas Calientes isn't exactly on the cutting edge of Peruvian cuisine. But walk down Av. Pachacutec and you'll find low-key eateries and bars, some serving a selection of Peru's growing crop of craft beers. There are also high-end restaurants inside the two luxury hotels, Inkaterra and Sumaq, which are open to non-guests. More low-key traveler favorites include Restaurante Indio Feliz , serving up French-Peruvian dishes, and Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant , where you can pair local specialties with craft beer from all over the country.

Where to Eat and Drink in Cusco

Significantly larger than Aguas Calientes, Cusco is one place where you should have no problem finding great restaurants. Cicciolina is a classic tapas bar that feels like a local hangout, serving international and Andean dishes out of an open kitchen. Kion, from the growing Cusco Restaurants group , is a stylish place to enjoy Cantonese cuisine. The decor is Chinese vintage, the flavors are subtle, and the atmosphere is festive.

Chicha is the first restaurant in Cusco from Peruvian superstar chef Gaston Acurio of Astrid & Gastón fame. Located on the second floor of a Colonial building, the restaurant offers haute Andean cuisine (alpaca carpaccio, quinoa with duck) in an airy and well-lit space. After dinner, you can head to Cholos pub near the main plaza, which keeps around a dozen different Peruvian craft beers on tap. Peruvian owner Rodrigo Cardenas is passionate and knowledgeable about all of them.

Best Things to Do in Machu Picchu

When you arrive at the citadel, you'll have to follow the route outlined on your ticket so you may want to study up on some of the city's most exciting sites before you decide. Among the most important are the Sacred Stone, an astronomical clock that corresponds with the spring and autumnal equinoxes, and the Temple of the Sun, which is a great example of the Incans' impressive masonry skills.

During your visit, make sure you have some spare cash (small bills and coins) in your pocket because you will need them to access the only bathroom at the site entrance. You will also need your passport to get into Machu Picchu, which means that to use the bathroom or grab food you should have your passport ready. Hang onto your ticket because you'll need it to get back in. It may seem like a hassle, but you'll be glad you have it on you because just outside the entrance gates, there's a barely marked station where you can get the novelty Machu Picchu stamp in your passport.

On your way to Machu Picchu, you'll also find several interesting attractions in Aguas Calientes and Cusco.

Things to Do in Aguas Calientes

The town takes its name from the thermal springs, which are open to the public for a small fee. You'll also find plenty of souvenir shops at the major market near the train station. While Machu Picchu is the main attraction, of course, you can also visit the Mariposario de Machupicchu butterfly sanctuary .

Things to Do in Cusco

Cusco's pre-Columbian buildings have given this city UNESCO World Heritage status , and its cobblestoned streets, great hotels, museums, nearby archaeological sites, and relaxed atmosphere make it worth spending at least a couple of days here.

Cusco is filled with historic sites both from the Incan and colonial times: don't miss the impressive Coricancha (also spelled Koricancha or Qorikancha), an Incan temple-turned-Spanish church; the Sacsayhuaman Incan ruins; and the Cusco Cathedral. Wander through the streets of the hip San Blas neighborhood, people-watch on the Plazas de Armas, and shop at the San Pedro Market.

Accessibility

Travelers in wheelchairs can access the Peruvian world wonder with the help of tour companies like Wheel the World , which designed the first-ever wheelchair-accessible tour of Machu Picchu. You can contact the company to learn more about their services and their custom wheelchairs that are specially made to travel over the many steps and uneven terrain of the ancient city.

Packing Tips

Whether you're planning a multiday trek or a quick in-and-out day trip, you should be prepared to dress for mountain conditions . Bring water and a rain jacket, even if it looks like a beautiful sunny day. Speaking of the sun, remember that the ozone layer over Peru is compromised, and that, combined with the elevation, makes the sun extremely strong here, so wear a hat and use plenty of high SPF sunscreen. Keep insect repellant handy as well.

Don't bring drones, umbrellas, walking sticks, or trekking poles since they're all prohibited at Machu Picchu. Travelers who require sticks or poles for mobility can bring them in but only with protective rubber tips over the ends.

DAY 1: CUSCO – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTE – MACHU PICCHU

Today is the day, Machu Picchu! We pick you up at your hotel 4:00am, then drive in our private van to Ollantaytambo Train Station to leave on the 6:10am Expedition train. (If you prefer to begin in Ollantaytambo, we will pick you up at your hotel 5:20 – 5:30am). Your train departs Ollantaytambo at 6:10am and immediately enters the narrow Vilcanota River canyon. The steep canyon walls on each side are covered with lush sub-tropical jungle. Look carefully for the Inca terraces across the river, some of which are still farmed today!

Arriving in Aguas Calientes, the guide will meet you at the train station. Then you will have a little time to buy a snack before you take the shuttle up to Machu Picchu. It is a truly mystical site and not something you’ll ever see anywhere else in the world! Your guide will give you a tour, which takes about two hours. See most of the important parts of Machu Picchu Citadel. Learn about how Machu Picchu is divided into three sectors: agricultural, residential and religious.

When you have had your fill of the exceptional views of Machu Picchu, you will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on your train departure time, you may also have time for some shopping, sightseeing or a visit to the museum or hot springs.

The Expedition train will take you back to Ollantaytambo at 3:20pm, 4:22pm, 4:43pm or 6:20pm, following the spectacular Urubamba River. Close to Aguas Calientes, the canyon is narrow and the river has many beautiful sections of whitewater. You can also see Wiñay Wayna from the train, if you look up high on the steep canyon wall! Back at Ollantaytambo, the driver will meet you at the exit from the train station to take you back to your hotel in Cusco in our private vehicle. You can expect to arrive at the hotel by between 7:00pm to 10pm depending on your return train schedule.

  • Hiking up to the Sun Gate and Inca Bridge is not possible anymore due to new regulations.
  • Hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mt. is also not possible due to the time restraints of the one-day tour.
  • Return Expedition Train time depends on availability and how much in advance you have booked.

Had a great trip with our guide Ray Herrera and driver Alfredo. Lots of good experiences in a short period of time 4 days. Learnt a lot not just about the main tourist destinations but Peru in general by Ray. Ray has a passion for Inca history and local produce. Ray knows all the good photo spots and we managed the sun out every day .. Good culture and if you want to get on a tour ask for Ray at Sams Travel = amazing

Ray was our Tour Guide and Alfredo was our driver for a 4 day tour we did with SAM Travel Peru. Ray's knowledge of the history of Cusco and Machu Picchu was outstanding. Ray was very accommodating with all our needs. He stayed alongside us when trekking and helped where he could. His sense of humour was pleasant to be around. Ray spoke very good English. He is such a nice guy. I would strongly recommend Ray to be your tour guide to visit Machu Picchu. Ray explained everyday what the plans were for the next day, which was reassuring what we needed to take etc

Wow. We had such an incredible experience in Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Our guide, Dayvit, is the most knowledgeable guide we have ever had. He has such an extensive knowledge of the history and is very friendly and helpful. If you are planning a trip to Peru, I highly recommend SAM travel and be sure to request Dayvit!

2 day tour sacred valley / Machu Picchu highly recommend! David was the best tour guide. He knows an incredible amount about Incan culture and is personable and funny. He also kept us up to date on a political situation happening when we were there and was informative. Overall, this tour checks all the boxes. Thank you!

We used SAM Travel for a 2D/1N trip from Cusco to Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu on Dec 25-26, 2022. The team was good with communication from the start - both Saul and Junior were very helpful and professional with answering any questions and clearing up any misunderstandings. Our guide, Miguel, was prompt, pleasant, and quite knowledgeable. We enjoyed his company and insight over the 2 day trip and recommend him to anyone booking with SAM Travel.

Powerful! This journey tests your humanity and leaves you in awe of yourself and the beauty that Pachamama provides. April 2024 We conquered the Inca trail and it was only made possible with the help and guidance from our expert guides Jean Pierre (JP) and Jimmy. The knowledge these gentlemen shared was admired by all of our group and the envy of other trail hikers who stopped to listen. The hike has many layers of challenges including language barriers, altitude sensitivities and food specifications. The team at Sam travel exceeded the needs and went above to ensure our comforts were met. A special mention must be made to Mario, the Chef who somehow performed magic with nutritious flavourful meals to satisfy even the pickiest consumers and Francesco who was our lead porter who orchestrated the harmony that happened behind the scenes to get everything done. Nothing less than marvellous from this team. Thank you to each of the group who made our trek a remarkable experience.

Jose and Henry were great guides for our first time exploring machu pichu! They were very attentive and kept everything on a smooth schedule. Highly recommend!

The whole experience was amazing. Ray, our guide answered all of our questions and definitely had our best interest in mind the whole time. Timothy the cook made fantastic food and somehow found a way to prepare a birthday cake with no notice! Boni our head porter and his whole crew were kind, accommodating, and had such upbeat attitudes which really made the experience great!

I spent two days with Sam Travel’s guide Raymier, who guided us through the one-day 12-km stretch of the Inca trail and then took us to Machu Picchu the next day. In my group, I was always the last one on the trail because I come from the coast and I’m not used to altitudes, and honestly I could also have prepared physically a little better. Raymier respected my pace, never rushed me, and supported me throughout the ardous trail. He had much knowledge to share. I speak Spanish, but ended up in an English tour, and Ray’s English was very good. He was funny, respectful, and versatile. He knew where to take all the best photos and patiently took photos of all of us. I would trust Sam Travel again especially if I was lucky enough to have Ray as a guide again.

1) Getting To Machu Picchu

When going about a trip to Machu Picchu, you can either decide to do it on your own or join a fully guided tour from beginning to end. Either way though, you most likely will be doing so from Cusco .

Below are a few of the main ways to go about a Machu Picchu itinerary:

  • Independent Day Trip from Cusco
  • Independent Overnight from Cusco
  • Tour from Cusco

Independent Trip from Cusco

If going to Machu Picchu independently (whether a day trip or overnight), then you will need to know the ins and outs on how to get there. Below is a walk through of the logistics and how to go about your trip.

Recap of Cusco to Machu Picchu Route:

  • Taxi : Cusco to San Pedro or Poroy Train Station
  • Train : San Pedro / Poroy to Aguas Calientes
  • Bus : Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

Taxi from Cusco to Train Station

If coming from Cusco, the first step in the process will be taking a taxi to either the San Pedro or Poroy train station .

The San Pedro station is in the city center of Cusco and the Poroy station is about a 30 minute taxi drive away. Although it is a short distance, you may find that some trains to Aguas Calientes are much longer from San Pedro.

Train to Aguas Calientes

To get to Machu Picchu from San Pedro or Poroy you will have to train to Aguas Calientes – the base town of the historical site.

The trains to Aguas Calientes can be anywhere from 3 – 5 hours long. Pay close attention when booking the tickets!

If you are going during regular season, t here are several trains run by Perurail that can take you from San Pedro and Poroy to Aguas Calientes on a daily basis. You can also check out Incarail , which has a couple options a day.

Buy these tickets in advance as they also will be in high demand. And always be sure to check the latest schedules just in case anything changes!

Logistics Note : Another option is to catch a train from Ollantaytambo if you will be around the Sacred Valley area prior to your trip to Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu Train Schedules

Luggage Note : The trains have a baggage allowance of just 11 lbs , which might be a problem if you are staying in Aguas Calientes overnight. There are a couple options here to help you out with this:

  • The first option is to leave the majority of your luggage at your hotel in Cusco and pick it up on your way back.
  • The second option is to only pack 11 or so pounds worth of luggage in the first place and then you will not have to worry about weight limits.

Traveling in the Rainy Season? During offseason (January to April) you might need to take a combination bus+train to get to Aguas Calientes. First would be a bus from Wanchaq station in downtown Cusco to Ollantaytambo, followed by a train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

Bus to Machu Picchu

Once you arrive in Aguas Calientes and are ready to begin your journey up, you will hop on a 20 minute bus ride ($24 round trip) that takes you zig zagging up the mountain.

These busses leave constantly to and from Machu Picchu but do expect a wait during peak times.

Return to Cusco

When booking your return train leg either on the same day or next, make sure everything is timed correctly so you have a hassle free experience.

You do not want to be rushed through the site and constantly worry about catching a train. The latest trains head back to Cusco around 5:00PM – 6:00PM, so you should have enough of time for the day trip (and of course plenty of time if doing an overnight).

You can also book the return leg to Ollantaytambo in the case you are continuing your trip to the Sacred Valley.

PeruRail

Guided Tour from Cusco

Now if you are joining a tour from Cusco, you most likely will not need to worry about the details as the tour company will have it all taken care of for you.

Instead of worrying about taxis, trains, busses, tickets, guides, etc., you will simply be picked up or meet at a certain location.

Machu Picchu Tour : Check out this highly rated Full Day Machu Picchu Tour from Cusco that takes care of it all for you

2) Machu Picchu Logistics Map

Below is a map highlighting the train station in Aguas Calientes (where you will be arriving), the bus station to take you up the mountain, and the winding bus route up to  Machu Picchu itself.

Once you arrive at Machu Picchu, you can go ahead and begin to explore it all!

3) Tickets to Machu Picchu

As of 2023 there have been some important changes to the rules at Machu Picchu . Most notably this has to do with specific routes/circuits that you will need to follow.

Machu Picchu has had its fair share of rule changes throughout the years, so we will see what sticks and what doesn’t.

Machu Picchu Circuits

There are 5 routes to choose from when visiting Machu Picchu (numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5). On the official Machu Picchu website , you can find more info about each circuit.

When going about the booking process, you do not need to choose a specific route (unless you are taking part of one of the more limited mountain hikes).

These main options include:

  • Circuit 1, 2, 3 or 4
  • Huayna Picchu Mountain + Circuit 4
  • Machu Picchu Mountain + Circuit 3
  • Huchuy Picchu Mountain + Circuit 4
  • Circuit 1 or 2 + Inka Bridge

Machu Picchu Ticket Options

If you are deciding which Circuit to take part of, it seems like Circuit 2 is the most comprehensive of the options. This offers around 3 hours of walking to all the various areas of the Machu Picchu complex.

Now, if you want to take part of one of the three more limited mountain hikes, then you will be stuck with either Circuit 3 or 4. I have seen some people recommend buying two tickets (mountain hike in the morning / standard ticket in the afternoon), in order to see more of the complex.

Machu Picchu Circuit 2

Purchasing Tickets

You must purchase tickets to Machu Picchu in advance through the government website or an authorized ticket provider . The tickets can sell out, especially in high season so do buy your tickets beforehand.

If you opt for a prearranged tour of Machu Picchu , many of them will take care of tickets, transportation, lodging, tour guide etc. So just make sure you have an idea of what is and what is not included in your package.

Entry time slots are hourly starting at 6:00AM and ending at 3:00PM for a standard ticket.

If you want to take part of one of the mountain hikes, these will just have hourly entry time slots in the morning.

Ticket Cost

If purchasing tickets through the government website, here are the ticket costs for the various route offerings:

  • Standard Ticket : S/ 152 ($42 USD)
  • Huayna Picchu : S/ 200 ($55 USD)
  • Macchu Picchu Mountain : S/ 200 ($55 USD)
  • Huchuy Picchu : S/ 152 ($42 USD)
  • Circuit 1 or 2 + Inka Bridge : S/ 152 ($42 USD)

4) Important Tips Before You Go

Here are some quick tips to better prepare you for this Machu Picchu itinerary:

» Bring your passport ! You will need it to take the bus up and to enter the site. You can also get a Machu Picchu stamp in your passport when you arrive.

» There are no bathrooms within the Machu Picchu complex after you enter . You will only find them outside of the entrance and will have to pay 2 sol ($0.60) to use them.

» Right outside the entrance you can find a snack bar with all sorts of sandwiches, pastries and drinks. So if you were planning on having lunch up top this would be your only affordable option (the other more expensive option would be eating at the Sanctuary Lodge buffet nearby).

» Going off of the previous two points, you cannot re-enter Machu Picchu once you exit .

5) A Machu Picchu Guide in Pictures

Once you have arrived at Machu Picchu you will spend several hours alongside your tour guide learning the importance of this Incan site and some of the amazing stories to go along with it.

There will be plenty of pictures taking opportunities throughout the day as you wander around the sites and take it all in.

Machu Picchu Clouds

6) Hikes on Machu Picchu

As mentioned there are a few hiking opportunities to take part of on Machu Picchu if you are up for it:

The first option is called Huayna Picchu and is to the northern side of the ruins. The second is called Machu Picchu Mountain and is to the southern side. The third option is Huchuy Picchu Mountain .

There is limited availability for the three hikes – only a few hundred spots per day per hike, so book well in advance.

Remember, with these hikes you can only take part of a certain circuit. If you want to see more of Machu Picchu, you will need to purchase another entrance ticket.

Also, if you want to be less rushed you could also split between two days (afternoon session day 1 followed by one of the morning hikes on day 2).

Machu Picchu Huayna

I suppose we have enough time to take the train back to Ollantay after visiting MP, if we want to. Given that we will have stayed one night in each place already, the decision may be more about which offers more to explore in terms of culture, sightseeing and restaurants, and is it equally easy to start our tour back to Cusco.

Thanks for your suggestions!

After Machu Picchu (3rd day) take the train back to Ollantaytambo and stay there.

Another vote for Ollantaytambo. Aguas Calientes is really just a tourist town, built to support Machu Picchu tourism. Lots of souvenir shops and restaurants for tourists.

Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of an extra night at Ollantay.

Again, we plan to visit in Sept. Thanks!

It is possible that you can travel all the way to Aguas calientes on day 1. But it is just a long travel day.

A couple things to consider…make sure you give yourself plenty time and some cushion to get to Ollantaytambo and take the train in case that your flight to Cusco is delayed.

The 2nd thing to consider is luggage. Large luggage is restricted on the trains, most people will do the overnight to Aguas Calientes just with a backpack. Your hotel in Ollantaytambo would probably keep your luggage until your return or your other option is to leave it at the train station where they offer free luggage storage.

If you plan to hike any of the mountains in Machu Picchu, I would say it is best that you visit MP at least a couple nights later. Give your body a couple nights to adjust to the elevation. MP/Aguas Calientes at around -7000~8000+ feet is still high elevation and you will definitely feel the elevation walking any steep paths/stairs in MP day 2.

Splitting your stay in Ollantaytambo may seen like a bit of a hassle, but it is not too bad and in some ways a good thing, so you have a place to keep your large luggage.

Another option is that you stay 2 nights in Ollantaytambo first, the 3rd night in Aguas Calientes and after your day in Machu Picchu you end in Cusco the same day. So you could visit some sites in the sacred Valley from Ollantaytambo and back, but some people may feel is a little backtracking compared to doing it on your transfers between Ollantaytambo-Cusco.

Sounds good, thanks. Taking the altitude adjustment and our ages (50s) in consideration, we are definitely going to take it easy.

Day 2: Take the train to AC and go easy during the day

Day 3: Visit MP and then take the train back to Ollantay for the night

Day 4: Tour the villages on the way back to Cusco

Thanks All!

It may be reassuring to know that it was my 50-something husband who had the least problem with the altitude and my teenage daughter who had the most? You can't predict how it'll affect you, so taking it slow is a good idea, but just being 50-something is not a problem itself!
