Lake Lucerne Cruise (Routes, Prices & More)

lake lucerne cruise

Lake Lucerne is one of the country’s largest lakes and a popular tourist destination in central Switzerland. Luzern has many things to do and is easily accessible by various mountain railways, including the panoramic trains that are so popular among first-time visitors to Switzerland.

A cruise on Lake Lucerne is even included in the Gotthard Panorama Express experience, and it’s one of the highlights of the entire trip. But you can explore the lake without riding any trains first, and this detailed guide to cruises on Lake Lucerne will tell you all you need to know to plan that adventure!

Lake Lucerne Tour Suggestions

lake lucerne private cruise

If you just want to jump on a cruise and enjoy a short trip or a full day out on the lake, then the following three options might be just the ticket.

The first one is a Lake Lucerne Panoramic Sightseeing cruise which you can take at whichever time you like (as long as there is a boat). It is a one-hour affair that shows you all the highlights and an audio explanation in your choice of language.

The second option is an excellent combination of a small group Lucerne Tour , which covers all the highlights and ends with a one-hour lake cruise.

The third option is one of my favorite trips in Switzerland. A boat trip on Lake Lucerne to the lovely lakeside town of Vitznau followed by a ride up Mt Rigi on the stunning cogwheel railway.

Or, you can book a full day on the lake with all your friends on your own private boat , including stops at all the best spots, lunch at a fantastic restaurant and time to jump in the lake and swim. You can drive the boat yourself if you are up for it!

Another flexible and cheap option is this all-day ticket to jump on and off the local boats on Lake Lucerne, which include some fantastic historic steamboats. My favorite way to get to somewhere like Mt Rigi via Vitznau.

If you would prefer to organise your trip on the Lake Lucerne ferries, keep reading below.

Cruising on Lake Lucerne: Overview

Lake Lucerne

The important thing you need to know before you book a boat ride on Lake Lucerne is that there are two main types of lake cruises – culinary and panoramic. Panoramic boat tours take you across the lake, allowing you to discover jaw-dropping views.

On the other hand, culinary cruises are usually themed – think fondue cruises, fajita cruises, etc. You’re seated at a dining table and enjoy a delicious meal while views of the lake and surrounding mountains flash in the background.

Panoramic boat rides are affordable and usually free or discounted with the various travel passes. Culinary boat rides are more expensive because they include a meal and drinks, and you can’t get a huge discount.

Choose a sunset cruise if money isn’t an object. Lake views are more magical when contrasted against the colors of a sunset, and dinner is much more delicious when paired with such stunning views.

Also, it is possible to choose from almost 20 different boats. The fleet includes five paddle steamers and 14 motor vessels, so feel free to board the boat you like the most.

Things to do in lucerne: your ultimate guide, how to get to the pier in lucerne.

Lake Lucerne Pier

Although there are piers in many towns along the lake shore, your best bet for a cruise is to head to Lucerne. There are seven piers in the city alone, and it’s where you’ll have the most options for Lake Lucerne boat trips. Piers 1, 2, and 3 operate boat trips to all the bigger towns on the lake shore.

There’s another reason why Lucerne is the best starting point for lake cruises, and that is easy public transport access. It’s the biggest city on the shore of the lake, and it has the best train connections to other cities in Switzerland. So, if you rely on public transport, you’ll be glad to know that you can easily travel to Lucerne by train from most other towns and cities in Switzerland.

The main train station in Lucerne is directly adjacent to piers 1, 2, and 3. It’s impossible to miss – look for the large steamboats and head in their direction.

Boats operate on Lake Lucerne year-round, so you can go on a lake cruise whenever you want. The main difference between summer and winter timetables is that the boats are more frequent in the summer. Also, some cruise routes are seasonal, so you won’t be able to do all the routes if you visit in the off-season.

Here’s a timetable for Lake Lucerne cruises this winter season:

Lake Lucerne Cruise Timetable

You can check it out more at this link , and see what all the different annotations mean.

Here’s another link for the Spring 2023 timetable , which includes additional routes. I’ll add the summer 2023 timetable to this guide once they post it online!

Generally speaking, cruising on the lake in the summer is best. It’s a much more enjoyable experience when it’s warm and sunny, plus you have many more options for cruise routes. Winter cruises can be just as magical, especially when the boats are adorned with lovely Christmas decorations, but it can be freezing on the open decks.

Ticket Prices

mount pilatus

Ticket prices depend on factors and range from 10 CHF to more than 100 CHF. You can get a day pass for the lake that lets you ride multiple boats or purchase point-to-point tickets to hop from one town to the next.

The prices also depend on the season, but the average number I can give you is between 40 CHF and 70 CHF for return tickets. Remember that you can also get all sorts of discounts, so don’t forget to check out your options.

The cheapest option is a one-hour catamaran cruise with no breaks or meals. Tickets start at some 25 CHF for second-class seats, without a discount.

You can use this link to estimate how much your journey on Lake Lucerne would cost.

Opening Hours

The operating hours for cruises on Lake Lucerne depend on the season; you can check the current schedule here .

Cruises occur daily, even in the winter season, but the operating hours are shorter during the colder months. Also, remember that these opening hours are for the various ticket offices along the shore of Lake Lucerne – the boat cruise timetable is entirely different. It depends on the season and weather conditions.

There are usually two daily departures in the winter season for the Lucerne-Fluelen cruise, but more departures for the shorter routes on the lake. Click here for the current timetable of all cruises and ferries on Lake Lucerne.

Flüelen

One of the best cruise routes on Lake Lucerne is from Flüelen to Lucerne. This is the trip included in the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, so if you’re doing that and you’re going to ride the Gotthard Panorama Express Train, this is the route you should take. This cruise covers almost the entire lake, and it is truly a wonderful experience.

Luzern – Hergiswil – Alpnachstad is another popular route, especially with hikers who want to ascend Mount Pilatus, the closest mountain to Lucerne . Trips to Küssnacht and Ennetbürgen are also pretty popular, especially among travelers who want to explore as many lake destinations as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the swiss travel pass valid on the lake lucerne cruise.

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is valid for cruises on Lake Lucerne and gets you a free ride on any of the passenger ships. You can’t get a free culinary cruise, but depending on the exact boat, you might be eligible for a discount, so ask around.

If you have the local Tell Pass, that also includes free travel on ferries on Lake Lucerne. Additionally, I have to point out that a Lake Lucerne cruise is included in the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland itinerary. When traveling from Lugano to Lucerne on the Gotthard Panorama Express train, passengers should get out at Flüelen for a panoramic boat trip across the entire lake.

Where can tickets be bought for the Lake Lucerne cruise?

Individual tickets for Lake Lucerne boat trips can be purchased once you’ve boarded a boat. There’s no surcharge for purchasing the ticket once you’re on the boat.

In addition to that, you can also buy tickets at the year-round offices in Weggis and Lucerne. Ticket offices in other towns are open only seasonally. Getting tickets from most railway operators is also possible, and you can even buy them online.

Can I reserve some seats for the Lake Lucerne cruise?

You can reserve seats only in the dining and lounge areas of the boats. You can’t reserve seats for the upper deck; they’re assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also, groups of ten or more people must make a group reservation, but remember that this doesn’t include a fixed seat reservation.

Hello, Is it possible to do a hop on hop off cruise in Lake Lucerne and thus pass between several villages or sites around the lake? Is there any link that explains how it’s done? Thank you

If you get a day pass for the region then you can do what you want. I believe it may also be possible to do it on a return ticket to your final destination, but you should check at the SBB train station or boat counter. Local boats on the lakes are the same as public transport in Switzerland, so the same rules apply as for normal travel passes.

I would like to take Lucerne boat cruise to Stans so I can take cable car to Mt. Stanserhorn. I will purchase Swiss Travel Pass. Where can I catch cruise to Stans? Is there an address for the pier as may be coming from Grand Europe Hotel in Lucerne.

Hi Duane Lee, All the boats in Lucerne leave right opposite the train station on the lake. You should take the bus into town to the train station. It is right on the water there near where the bus will come in. Just type in : Lucerne Bahnhofquai on google maps and you will see. I am not 100% sure which quai the stans boat leaves from, but just ask around once you get there.

we will have STP and want to take a boat ride (for free to either Burgenstock or Fruelen. We are a retired couple age 62 and love being on the water and seeing the beautiful sites. I read in your article that it takes 6 hours round trip to get to Fruelen. Would we just turn around and ride back? Do you think this is a good idea or not. Also How do I book lunch on the boat for the trip to Fruelen? Thanks! I love your articles on Switzerland! You are helping us so much with our first visit there in August.

It’s a full day out for sure. As for lunch, not sure about food on such long trips. They do have limited food available from memory. But if you want a decent food experience you might need a specific cruise.

Lucerne, where residents speak the Swiss German dialect, offers dramatic views of the Swiss Alps, including Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi.

From the moment Chris and I walked out of the train station in Lucerne, we were captivated by this lovely, colorful Swiss town.

You'll find that the train station in Lucerne offers a central location for visitors wanting to take the train to many destinations within Switzerland as well as a central location to begin exploring the many fascinating sites of Lucerne.

If you have a day or two to spend exploring, discover a variety of unique things to do in Lucerne.

1. Stroll Across the Chapel Bridge or Kapellbrücke

You may recognize Chapel Bridge or Kapellbrücke as a famous landmark in Switzerland.

First and foremost, you should start your exploration of Lucerne strolling along Kapellbrücke of Chapel Bridge. It is one of the outstanding Instagram Worthy spots where the flowers and beams make for some stunning photographs.

You may be interested in knowing that the tower at the center of the bridge has been used for defense over the years as well as a prison and a torture chamber.

2. Explore the Musegg Fortification

In our wandering and searching for things to do in Lucerne, Chris and I found ourselves at the Musegg fortification with its mighty towers and bastions. The fortification was free to tour, so we climbed a tower or two and enjoyed the view.

The final tower—Mannliturn—has a parapet at the top where you can enjoy a sweeping view of Lucerne.

3. Stroll Around Lake Lucerne

Visitors from all over the world love to stroll along Lake Lucerne and enjoy the tranquility of Lucerne surrounded by majestic mountains.. The lake with its central location is often referred to as the "heart of Switzerland".

"Although the lake is reminiscent of a fjord landscape, it is mainly characterized by a mild microclimate. Its shoreline consists of fertile hillsides, meadows and valleys. Its shores are home to forests inhabited by deer, chamois, foxes and marmots. Mount Rigi is covered in chestnut and almond trees as well as alpine flowers on the sunnier slopes." Lakepedia

4. Explore Old Town Lucerne

Wander around old town Lucerne getting lost in its narrow alleyways. Did you know that it is completely free of traffic? Don't pass by a great spot for lunch at XXL Kebab and Vegan . Chris and I settled on a bench nearby to enjoy a tasty lunch and do a little people watching. It’s completely free of traffic, so the best way to do it is by wandering around and getting lost in its narrow alleyways.

5. Discover the Lion of Lucerne

The Lion of Lucerne is a rock carving in a small park in Lucerne, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen (sculptor of the Christus). This monument of a dying lion was hewn between 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn and was commissioned to commemorate the massacre of Swiss Guards in 1792 during the French Revolution. As one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland, this powerful memorial is visited each year by about 1.4 million tourists.

As Mark Twain famously stated, “The Lion of Lucerne (is) the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”

6. Visit Cathedrals

Lucerne is home to a variety of cathedrals.

  • Jesuitenkirche
  • Markuskirche
  • Franziskanerkirche
  • St. Gallus Catholic Church
  • Peter's Chapel
  • Matthauskirche
  • Stiftung Flammarion der Romisch Katholischen Pfarrei

7. Take the Steamboat from Lucerne to Mount Rigi

You will want to catch the steamboat (or another boat) to Vitznau. Don't be like Chris and I though; we raced to the boat and settled in with one minute to spare! The ticket office is located across the street from the train station in Lucerne.

When you get off the boat at Vitznau and you plan to ride the cog rail up to Mt. Rigi, catch the next cog rail as soon as you get off the boat. It is just steps from where you get off the boat. Otherwise you’ll be waiting for an hour for the next rail. There isn’t much to see in Vitznau.

8. Ride the Cog Rail to Rigi Kulm

The ride from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm is beautiful—there isn’t much of Switzerland that isn’t stunning and picturesque.

Chris and I finally made it to the top of the mountain and decided to move away from all of the tourists. We took another cog train over to Rigi Krabel where we planned to walk back along a flat path to Rigi Kulm ( Kulm means rounded mountain ).

9. Hike Around Rigi Kulm

Once Chris and I reached Rigi Krabel, we took a gondola up from Krabel where we stopped for a snack at a little cafe just off the path.

Our walk back to the Mount Rigi gondola took us about an hour and a half. We passed a lot of cows, heard a lot of cowbells, and saw very few people. Those that we did see taught us a new Swiss German greeting, “Gruezi” for hello.

10. Ride the Cog Rail Train to Mount Pilatus

The cable car ride from Kriens to Mt. Pilatus actually involved two different cable cars—a small 4-person gondola to Frakmuntegg, followed by the Dragon Glider (a larger aerial cableway) to Mt. Pilatus. The entire journey to the top took about a half an hour.

If you plan to visit Mt. Pilatus as a day trip , many tourists ride either the gondola or cogwheel train to the top of Mt. Pilatus and explore, hike, and take pictures.

The cogwheel rail to Pilatus is the steepest in the world!

Be sure to check the timetable for the last trip down the mountain each day.

It is a loooooong way down the mountain if you have to hike!

11. Hike to Tomlishorn on Mount Pilatus

The hike to Tomlishorn took about an hour and a half. Chris and I hiked later in the afternoon and saw only one other person on the trail. As we walked along, we could hear the cowbells clanging from the valley below.

The hiking path skirted the edge of the mountain, and was clearly marked with a railing. The last section of the trail was rockier, so you'll want to watch your step along the way.

The views though? Stunning.

12. Climb to Oberhaupt on Mt. Pilatus to Watch the Sunset

If you are spending the night on Mount Pilatus, be sure to climb to Oberhaupt to watch the sunset. Many people leave the Pilatus Hotel dining room part way through dinner to catch the sunset; it was an option our check-in agent suggested for us and highly recommended we do.

I suggest you leave the dining room at least 15-20 minutes before sunset to make the 10-15 minute climb. You'll catch the gorgeous evening views. It is totally worth the effort!

13. Spend the Night on Mt. Pilatus

Chris and I were excited for this overnight stay. We easily traveled up the mountain with our luggage in tow and deposited our bags and backpacks in our room before checking out the view and the mountain.

As it was close to the end of September, the hotel was not packed at all.

14. Paraglide from Mt. Pilatus

You might say that paragliding is the proper way to see Switzerland ! Just remember these tips:

  • Fly tandem with a licensed guide
  • Be aware that your flight is dependent on the weather conditions. Your guide will monitor the weather conditions prior to your take off.
  • The guides will bring all of the necessary paragliding equipment.
  • Wear closed toed shoes
  • Wear long pants
  • Wear a warm jacket . We didn't bring puffy jackets for this end of summer trip, but would have appreciated the warmth while paragliding. As it was, our guides provided extra jackets as another layer that we gratefully wore.
  • Do not drink alcohol or take drugs before your flight
  • Listen to your guide. When he says, "Run!", you run to catch the thermals.
  • Legs out straight on the landing unless your guide says otherwise. The tandem pack comes with substantial padding to soften your landing.

Are you wondering if paragliding is safe? Be sure your tandem paragliding guides are fully licensed and insured. Schedule with a reputable company.

16. Take a Day Trip to the Lindt Chocolate Factory in Switzerland

We learned a lot about the beginnings of chocolate making and perfecting the art of the smooth and creamy chocolate that we have today.

Chris and I may have taken advantage of the samples at the end of the tour and ate our admission ticket worth of samples. We spent about 2.5 hours at the factory, picked up a few chocolates to take home and then walked to the train station.

Tour the Lindt Chocolate Factory in Switzerland

17. Take a Day Trip to Lugano

The picturesque city of Lugano , in the heart of the Ticino canton of Switzerland, is tucked along the shores of Lake Lugano surrounded by majestic mountains. Ticino is the most Mediterranean of all of the Swiss cantons.

As the biggest city in the Ticino region with approximately 63,000 residents, Lugano is often referred to as  Switzerland’s “Little Italy” . Lugano blends the Swiss and Italian cultures with its Italian-speaking residents, customs and food .

Things to do in Lugano:

  • Take photos along Lake Lugano
  • Take a funicular to Monte Brè
  • Hike from Monte Brè to Gandria
  • Hike the Olive Grove Trail
  • Visit San Lorenzo Cathedral
  • Check out the shops and boutiques in Piazza della Riforma
  • Take the ferry around the lake
  • Make dinner reservations across the lake
  • Stroll through Parco Ciani
  • Get a massage

18. Ride the Bernina Express

The Bernina Express is a fantastic scenic rail journey from Chur, Switzerland to Tirano in Italy through the heart of the Swiss Alps. You'll marvel at the beauty of the steep peaks of the Swiss Alps, the sparkling lakes, and charming alpine villages. Riding the Bernina Express is one of the fantastic things to do in Lucerne (and Switzerland). Chris and I both highly recommend it!

19. Photograph Fluffy Cows

20. visit zurich.

We happened to be flying home from Zurich, but if you are planning a day trip from Lucerne to Zurich, it is an easy train ride from the train station in Lucerne.

Things to do in Zurich:

  • Wander through Old Town Zurich
  • Visit one of the many museums
  • Go to the zoo
  • Stroll along the storefronts of Bahnhofstrasse
  • Tour cathedrals and chapels

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

lake lucerne private cruise

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

lake lucerne private cruise

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

lake lucerne private cruise

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

lake lucerne private cruise

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

lake lucerne private cruise

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

lake lucerne private cruise

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

lake lucerne private cruise

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
