Our Most Booked Kenya Safari Packages

Best photo safari destinations in kenya – the best african photo safaris packages.

Next, we share our best-rated Kenya safari packages and destinations  that give you a chance to capture awe-inspiring photos and videos.

 1. African Photo safari packages Destination #1. Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara has a soul of its own. A soul kept alive by its vibrant, completely dumbfounding flora and fauna. The park is one of the reasons the Great Rift Valley is so great. Its open grassland a magnificence your camera ought to capture.

A selfless giver, the park shares her immense beauty with you, with over 95 mammal species and 400 bird species to see. The sunny weather makes those Kenya wildlife photos even better, the sunrise and sunset an opportunity you would hate to miss.

For the wildlife and scenery, we have the park’s western escarpments with animals such as the Big Five, cheetahs, hyenas, elands, zebras, and impalas frequenting the place.

The Mara Triangle is as fascinating, a point the spectacular Mara River helps put across. To capture is the great wildebeest migration, an occasion graced by over a million wildebeests and an almost equal number of zebras and impalas.

The adrenaline-packed experience is levitating, those hippo-pounce-on-zebra shots a treasure you will thank us for. For aerial shots, we have the balloon ride, which is, in all honesty, the best way to experience the park.

Also, fun to capture are the Maasais in their cultural villages.

 2. African Photo Safari Tours Destination #2. Amboseli National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro has to be the highlight of every Amboseli visit. The view from there is effortless, with the park offering Africa’s highest-peaking mountain in angles any photographer would kill for.

Not one for boring, the park makes sure to keep your photo safari in Kenya as interesting as possible by entertaining you to its five incredibly different habitats. To make sure your Kenya wildlife photos are wholesome is the park’s observational hill. The hill overlooking the swamp gives you a bird’s eye view of the park, giving you a go at those prize-worthy shots.

To capture is the large wildlife population, which heightens the park’s appeal to insane lengths. Elephants, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, lions, buffaloes, over 600 bird species, and wild dogs being among the must-sees. The elephant population is the highest in the region, their number nearing the 900 mark.

An interaction with the local Maasai people is also on the cards.

 3. Kenya Photography Safari Destination #3. Lake Nakuru National Park

Mix that flamingo pink with a light baby blue, and you get Lake Nakuru… And there, right by its shores, is Lake Nakuru National Park . The KWS managed park spreads its magnificence over 69.5 square miles of land, right at the floors of the Great Rift Valley. To prove worthy of the title ‘best photo safari destination in Kenya , is its seamless scenery encompassing picturesque marshy and woody grasslands.

There are over 56 different mammal species to photograph, some of which include the waterbucks, impalas, warthogs, Rothschild giraffes, white rhinos, the highly endangered black rhino, and the buffaloes. The nearby Lake Nakuru is a definite attraction largely for its popular flamingo-filled waters. Also to see are the great Makalia falls, known to draw in thousands of the 450 bird species in the park. To help with that perfect shot are the lion hill, baboon cliff, and out-of-Africa viewpoints.

 4. Kenya Photography Safari Destination #4. Hell’s Gate National Park

To have inspired a movie as great as the Lion King is enough explanation as to why the Hell’s Gate National Park made it to our list of the best Kenya tourist attractions. The scenery here is bananas, and the ambiance is the park’s way of reminding us why she is more than just rock.

Your fingers will go numb at the camera flicking, for there’s not an inch of the 68.25km Squares you will not want to capture. With the scenery comes soaring cliffs, water emptied gorges, rock towers, scrubbed volcanoes, and geothermal streams. To top it off is a wide array of wildlife, which includes the hartebeest, buffalo, baboon, zebras, Thompson gazelles, reedbucks, antelopes, and over 100 bird species.

Also captured are the hot springs, Olkaria Geothermal Station, Mervyn Carnelly Hide, raptor nesting, and the tourist circuits. The photos you can take during game riding, rock climbing, biking, or hiking here.

 5. Kenya Photography Safari Trips Destination #5. Diani Beach Kenya

There’s nothing quite like it. Nothing even close to the Diani magnificence. With as small as a 17 km shoreline, the beach, with its impeccable white-sandy beach, has managed to top the World Heritage list of ‘best beaches in Africa’ for 5 years in a row now.

Its waters are a bewitching blue, its overall scenery a thing that will have your camera running wild. Blending perfectly with the insane amounts of Diani blue is the lush green forest that is the very life of this beach.

A must-see is the coral mosque overlooking the beach, and the monkey sanctuary just next by. A boat ride will see you to the Shimba Hills, turtle information center, and Wasini Islands, which are equally taking.

Boat rides, and activities such as kitesurfing, deep-sea diving, and skydiving, will help you capture this beauty.

 6. Best Photo Safari in Africa Destination #6. Lewa Downs

Lewa sits at the northern slopes of Mount Kenya with so much grace you’d be jealous. And there, from above it, brilliant views of the Samburu reserve, Mt. Ololokwe, and the great Ewaso Nyiro River.

A ridiculously gorgeous landscape coupled with a great wildlife variety is what makes this conservancy such a great Kenya photo safari destination . The Grevy’s Zebra population, for example, is the highest there is in the world, while the highly endangered black rhino population in the conservancy is the highest in East Africa. Other animals in the park include the sitatungas, big five, elephants, cheetahs, and the Oryx, among many others.

The conservancy’s open grasslands are remarkable, and to supplement them comes the gorgeous Lewa swamp, a stunning natural forest, and a view of the Mt. Kenya.

Also to see is the Ngare Ndare Forest, which is an amazing combination of lush greenery, a waterfall, river, and huge amounts of elephants.

 7. Photographic Safaris in Africa Destination #7. Aberdare National Park

If sensational was a place, then it would definitely look like the Aberdares. The park’s scenery is dreamlike, its open moorland and forested ravines the very definition of perfect. A must-see are its outstanding waterfalls, river valleys, and ridges.

Calling the park home is an array of black rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, olive baboons, hyenas, leopards, warthogs, and the colobus monkeys. Rarities in the parks include the African wild cat, Giant forest hog, bongo, and the serval cat.

A visit up the Karuru Waterfalls will have you interact with the over 250 bird species in the park. Common sightings include the sunbird, eagles, plovers, and the Francolins

 8. Photographic Safaris in Africa Destination #8. Ol Pejeta Conservancy

364 sq km in size, the Ol Pejeta is a wildlife conservancy cushioned between the slopes of the Mt. Kenya and those of the Aberdares. The conservancy’s beauty is boundless, its wildlife-to-area ratio beating that of any park or reserve in the country.

More than 1000 mammals call the conservancy home, as well as the big five and a large variety of the Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s Hartebeest, cheetahs, and hyenas among many others.

A photo safari here gives you the chance to take home pictures of the only two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. Also to see are the highly endangered southern white rhinos and close to 80 white rhinos.

The Chimpanzee Sweetwater Sanctuary is also a delight. The sanctuary is a rescue for chimpanzees rescued from Central and West Africa.

The origin of safari, of romance under canvas on a vast African landscape, Kenya is where it all began. Today, its rich Maasai culture is woven into a classic safari experience that is centred around the annual wildebeest migration.

Our knowledge and experience of Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations allows us to craft journeys that hit exactly the right spots for photography, or hot-air ballooning, or watching the famous river crossings where predators lie in wait of an easy meal.

Kenya top Destinations

The crowning glory of a Kenya safari is indeed the Masai Mara, but knowing where and when to plan your trip for the migration is key. Our most highly rated Mara destination is the Mara North Conservancy, where some of the country’s premier tented camps and luxury lodges are located, offering far superior, private encounters with wildlife in a very popular part of Kenya.

Beyond the hype of the great migration are Kenya’s equally as remarkable wilderness areas, like Amboseli National Park – land of the planet’s last Big Tuskers. Here, these exceptional elephants, carrying tusks in excess of 50kg roam across open plains with the famous icy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Truly breath-taking.

Kenya is the Africa of your imagination. Planet earth on an epic scale. A place that fills your nostrils, kisses your skin, tingles your spine.

We spent 10 incredible nights with Lance as our private guide in Kenya. We stopped over in Nairobi at the Giraffe Manor, a simply must do for everyone, visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage before making our way to the Mara North Conservancy. The Mara North was one of the most fabulous places I have ever visited. We saw lions on every drive, one of the best destinations if this is what you are looking for, as well as elephants, buffalo, multiple cheetah, day old lion cubs, leopard and even drove to the National Park for one day and saw two wildebeest crossings!I can highly recommend traveling with Lance. He got us into the best position multiple times and seemed to know what the animals were going to do even before they did. Nicola Ann

KENYA | MAASAI MARA SAFARI

Amboseli national park, samburu & maasai mara game reserves, fulfill your dream of photographing africa’s wildlife in all its glory..

Join us as we embark on an adventurous wildlife tour of Kenya to witness its vast fauna from some of its best National Parks. Our 13-day Kenya Wildlife Photo Safari is all set to take you on a journey through the African Savanna. Here, the sky with its changing hues is ready to blow your minds and treat your eyes with its unmatched beauty. While the far lying horizon creates a picturesque image before us, it also excites us with the subjects that range from ‘The Big Five’ to African Civets and Grey Crowned Crane, which is unique to Africa.

For this itinerary, we have chosen National Parks which are unique in their own way. While the visit to Amboseli takes you through vast open plains and the view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Maasai Mara will enrich your experience with its huge population of lion, African leopard, cheetah, and African Bush elephant. In addition to these world-famous conservations, this wildlife adventure takes you to the off-beat destination of Samburu Game Reserve. Get to see the Samburu Special Five – Gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, reticulated Giraffe, and Somali Ostrich. Although our focus will be on the rich wildebeest of Africa, you will also experience and capture the ethnic culture and traditions of its people and their lifestyle, cuisine, and livelihood. Experience this unique world on our 13-day Kenya Wildlife Photo Adventure, and take away a lifetime of memories.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

After breakfast we will transfer to the Samburu airstrip for our flight with Safarilink to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, often referred to as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Kenya’s wildlife reserves. Day 9-12 | Maasai Mara Game Reserve

We’ll spend the next 4 days with unlimited game drives exploring the Mara, home to the proud and traditional Maasai tribe. The Mara is more than just the most popular wildlife park in Kenya, it is the reason why so many adventurers visit Kenya, and return for a second time.

This is a classic African savanna, and the sheer density of wildlife is amazing. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers, and where prey is found, so are predators. Watered by the Mara River and its tributary the Talek, the park is compromised of 583 sq. miles (1510 sq. km) of open grassland tucked away in the south west corner of the country. In the Mara you will see an astonishing amount of wildlife, including the big cats. Here, lions are found everywhere in large prides, and we’ll often see them hunting. Cheetahs and leopards are a little harder to spot, but are still fairly common. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in large numbers.

When we’re not shooting wildlife, we’ll be exploring the Maasai culture and photographing the people, wherever possible. In the evening we celebrate with a wonderful ‘Farewell Dinner’ at our camp. (B, L, D)

Day 13 | Return to Nairobi

On our last day we head out for our last early morning game drive to further explore the reserve before we bid it farewell. After breakfast, we’ll transfer to Olkiombo Airstrip for our morning flight back to Nairobi. Upon arrival at Wilson Airport, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and bid you farewell. If your flight is not until the evening, and you’ve booked a late departure hotel room, we’ll be happy to drop you at your hotel before saying goodbye. (B)

KENYA – OUT OF AFRICA

FULLY BOOKED!

9 Day Photographic Safari

19th to the 27th of March 2023

THIS PHOTOGRAPHY SAFARI IS PRESENTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH AUSTRALIA'S LEADING AFRICAN SAFARI SPECIALISTS, ENCOMPASS AFRICA

Are you ready to take off on the ultimate photographic safari experience?

Masai Warriors

Kenya is known as the original safari country and the ultimate Out of Africa romantic safari destination. Here you can photograph some of the biggest prides of lions in Africa, witness impressive herds of elephants, experience colourful cultures and so much more. The photographic opportunities are endless

Leopard

On this nine day/eight night luxury Kenya photo tour we'll take in the impressive Amboseli National Park, where great elephant herds roam with the towering Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the background – this is the shot every photographer wants to take. Amboseli is a spectacular 40,000 wilderness with Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peaks as its backdrop. It lays the foundation for unrivalled photographic splendour. Imagine impressive elephant herds crossing the arid lake beds.

Our safari finale is private mobile luxury camping in the world-famous Masai Mara, a land of great plains, big cats and adrenalin-fuelled wildlife action. We like to avoid the main national park (and the crowds), and go somewhere remote that only a few people have discovered. Here you'll be guided by authentic Maasai people who will get you close to all the big cats and plains game action – and great photo opportunities.

The Masai Mara offers incredible photographic opportunity outside of the typical migration period. In fact, many an award winning image have been captured during the shoulder season either sides of the migratory movements. The Mara remains a quintessential safari experience in the Mara Experience Season and is still one of the bucket list items that any wildlife and nature enthusiast and photographer should tick off.

Best Time to Visit

Situated right on the equator, Kenya's temperatures do not fluctuate as much as you may be used to at home. The climate is this country is similar to most East African countries including Uganda and Tanzania.

If you are hoping to see the Great Migration of Wildebeest and Zebra in full effect, the best time of the year to visit Kenya is August and September. At this time of the year, the migratory herds are making their way back into the region from the South. If you are interested in capturing the Great Migration in action, the month of August is prime time viewing for sightings of the hundreds of micro herds crossing the Mara River.

Kenya, similar to Tanzania and Uganda has two rainy seasons: March - May and October - December. Our expert photographers tend to avoid traveling to Kenya during these rainy seasons, as some parks prohibit entry into the parks during acclimate whether and wildlife can be unpredictable during these months.

PHOTOGRAPHIC OPPORTUNITIES

Photograph Wildebeests, Zebra , and Thomson's Gazelle as they risk their lives to cross the Mara River. With dust in the air and animals running wild, guests can expect to gain incredible photos during river crossings

Visit Shompole Conservancy, where photographers have the opportunity to spend their nights in an overnight hide, designed for wildlife photographers

Other than the Great Migration, the Mara is home to many other animals including Elephant, Rhino, Hippo, Lion, Leopard, Giraffe, hundreds of bird species and much more that guests will have the opportunity to photograph throughout your safari

Visit Amboseli National Park, home to Craig, and other Super Tusker Elephants . With only approximately 25 super tuskers remaining, this photographic experience is a privilege to take part in

Trip Overview

Sold Out! Kenya has long been Africa’s most storied safari destination. Known for its legendary wildlife and evocative landscapes, Kenya offers photographers countless opportunities to capture iconic images of Africa: Graceful giraffes browsing in acacia trees, elephants traversing the savanna, stealthy lions stalking gazelle, proud Maasai bedecked in ceremonial beadwork.  This 10-day photo safari is designed for photographers of every level using equipment of all levels… including mobile phones.  A professional photographer will be with us the entire trip giving personal attention and support and helping us enhance our photos.

Days 1 – 2

Arrivals – 2 nights Nairobi Eka Hotel

Upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you will be met by our representative and transferred to  Eka Hotel for a two-night stay. Check in and get settled before perhaps meeting up with the rest of the group for dinner (All meals on your own account this day). Wake up and enjoy breakfast and around 10:00am we will depart for  David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust . for the 11-12noon visit.

This will be followed by a visit to Karen Blixen’s former home (now a  museum )  with absolutely stunning views of the Ngong Hills made famous in her book Out Of Africa and includes lunch at Tamambo. After lunch we will visit the  Giraffe Centre after which we will be dropped off at Eka Hotel in time to review your photos of the day, rest and have dinner. (B, L)

Eka Hotel

Days 3 – 4

Off to Amboseli National Park

Driving out of Nairobi and heading south east, we will have about a four and half hour drive arriving at  Amboseli National Park .  Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust” and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close.

Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands. We can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.

We’ll stay at  Ol Tukai Lodge  With spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the golden plains, Ol Tukai Lodge is a charming, contemporary retreat situated within the pristine Amboseli National Park. Filled with a quintessential African atmosphere and set amidst beautifully manicured lawns, the lodge’s luxury chalets offer uninterrupted views of the tranquil wilderness of the park or the snow-capped mountain in the distance. Beautifully appointed and inviting, the chalets boast private terraces where we’ll make the most of our spectacular surroundings. (B, L, D)

kenya safari photo

Days 5 – 6

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After Breakfast on the morning of the 17 th , we will drive back to Nairobi to Wilson Airport and fly north to central Kenya to  Ol Pejeta Conservancy   The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a mosaic of grass plains, wooded grassland, Acacia woodland and evergreen thicket extending over 86,000 square miles!

Ol Pejeta boasts an astounding variety of animals including non-indigenous chimpanzees and the Big Five (the endangered black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo & lion). The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains guarantees an unforgettable safari experience.

Our Porini Rhino Camp  guide will collect us from the airstrip and transfer us to camp, our home for the next two nights were we will enjoy morning, evening and night time shared game drives and escorted walks with Maasai guides.

Rhinos

Days 7 – 9

To the Maasai Mara

On the morning of August 18 th , we will fly to the famous  Maasai Mara National Reserve   located in southwest Kenya along the Tanzania border.  Game viewing in the Masai Mara is excellent all year around thanks to the diverse population of resident game – including lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – plus popular species like zebra, giraffe, hyena, eland and gazelle.

We will be there at a time when one of nature’s greatest spectacles, the Wildebeest Migration, should reach the Mara, however there are no guarantees as the migration is dependent on the rains. The migration is a dramatic mass movement of almost two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle in a seasonal annual cycle driven by rainfall. To reach the Mara’s fresh grazing, wildebeest make dramatic river crossings from Tanzania to feast on the Mara plains and regain their strength.

Our home for the next three nights is the distinctly unique  Mara Engai Lodge  ,nestled amongst pristine Kenyan Ravine forest on the Oloololo (Siria) Escarpment. Overlooking the amazing Masai Mara National Reserve and Wildebeest Migration Route, with around 120km of unbroken views across the vast savannah of the Masai Mara – it is simply breath-taking. In Maasai belief, Mara means the spotted Land, whilst Engai is the Maasai God who created what we have labeled as the 7th wonder of the world.

Wonder at the most amazing views over the Masai Mara and Great Migration route from your own private veranda. Indulge in fine dining, with delicious treats made from fresh produce from the lodges organic gardens. Get back to nature on thrilling game drives and experience  thousands of years of Maasai tradition. Then before you sink into your large comfortable bed, take a look up at the mass of twinkling stars in the clear African sky — it’s something everyone should should see at least once in their lifetime.

After packing our things and saying our “Farewells” we’ll fly from Maasai Mara back to Nairobi & be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for our international flights home.

Day 6: Amboseli – Lake Naivasha including afternoon boat ride & Elsamere visit

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Kenya section of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, and is located northwest of Nairobi. At 1,890 meters (6,200 ft) aloe sea level, the lae is at the highest point in the Kenya rift and is set in a complex geological combination if volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a much larger Pleistocene era lake. Lake Naivasha is home to a wide variety of wildlife including a sizable population of hippos which usually visit the property during their nightly forays for food. Amazingly agile for their bulk, hippos are good climbers and leave the water each night to graze on grass, then return to the water before dawn. Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake, also has a healthy fish population such as black bass, tilapia and crayfish which attract a wide variety of fish-eating birds such as the long-tailed and great cormorants, fish eagles, pelicans, and various types of kingfishers. On 60 hectares (148 acres) of grassland surrounded by trees and set among giraffes and waterbucks, Naivasha Sopa Lodge is a collection of brick and wood makuti cottages on the shore.

Elsamere is the original home to Joy and George Adamson. Their story of raising an orphan lion cub in the 1950s and her subsequent release into the African bush is one of the great conservation stories of all time. Joy’s captivating book about Elsa the lioness, entitled Born Free, was published by Harvill Press in 1960 and soon received international acclaim. In the years which followed, Joy published sequels to Born Free and more books about her hand-reared cheetah Pippa and leopard Penny. In 1966 Born Free became a movie starring husband-and-wife actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. Filmed in the Kenya bush over the course of many months, it soon became a worldwide hit. As Joy’s fame as a conservationist grew, so did her fortune. But neither she nor George had any personal interest in money. Royalties from books and films were paid into a new charity which Joy called the Elsa Wild Animal Appeal, and has since become The Elsa Conservation Trust. George and  Joy each left their entire estates including Elsamere, Joy’s house on Lake Naivasha, to the Elsa Conservation Trust. During the last forty years the trust has donated millions of dollars to wildlife education and conservation projects, large and small, helping to create the famous Kenyan parks and reserves at Meru, Samburu, Shaba, Kora, Hell’s Gate and also the Centre for Education in Sustainability at Elsamere. Today, the principal activities and aims are to further worldwide conservation education, particularly in East Africa. Today, the Elsa Conservation Trust continues its lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation. Together the Adamsons revolutionized our attitudes to wild animals and warned the world that unless it protects their habitats, many of the most magnificent species would be extinct there within a few decades.

Day 7:  Lake Naivasha – Maasai Mara National Reserve

After and early morning breakfast, we will drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, arriving at lunchtime and then go for an afternoon game drive. Maasai Mara is world-renowned for its exceptional population of cats, including Maasai lions, African leopards and Tanzanian cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebras, Thomson’s gazelles, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration. Overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 8: Maasai Mara National Reserve

When it was originally established in 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary, the Maasai Mara covered only 520 square kilometers (200 sq miles) of the current area, including the Mara Triangle. The area was extended to the east in 1961 to cover 1,821 km (703 sq miles) and converted to a game reserve. Hippopotami and crocodiles are found in large groups in the Mara and Talk Rivers. Leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes can also be found in the reserve. All members of the “Big Five,” (lion, leopard, elephant, cape buffalo and rhinoceros) are found here. Antelopes can be found, including Grant’s gazelles, impalas, duikers and Coke’s hartebeests. The plains are also home to the Maasai giraffe, with its’ distinctive, irregular and jagged patterns that extend to the hooves. More than 470 species of birds have been identified in the park, many of which are migrants, with almost 60 species being raptors. Birds that call this area home for at least part of the year include vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested eagles, African pygmy falcons and the lilac-breasted roller, which is the national bird of Kenya. Overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 9: Maasai Mara National Reserve

Morning, afternoon and evening game drives will be taken in specially adapted open safari vehicles. We will visit the Maasai people, a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known of African ethnic groups due to their living near many of the game parks of East Africa. Their language is called Mad and it is estimated that one million Maasai people live in both Kenya and Tanzania. Shuka is the Maasai word for sheets traditionally worn wrapped around the body, one over each shoulder, the a third over the top of the. These are typically red in color and often worn with some other colors or patterns, such as plaid. Red is the preferred color due to its meaning in Maasai culture of warrior, blood and bravery. During our time on the Maasai Mara, we will also take a sunrise hot air balloon ride to view wildlife, followed by a morning breakfast on the plains. Overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 10: Maasai Mara National Reserve

We will continue with morning, afternoon and evening game drives to view wildlife and get the best photographic opportunities while the light is best. Overnight Ashnil Mara Camp

Day 11: Maasai Mara – Nairobi

This morning we will take a short flight to Nairobi. Arrival for lunch and an afternoon visit to the National Museum of Kenya. Afterwards, we will have day use of the hotel to freshen up and pack. Since this is your final day, we will have an early dinner and later transfer you to the airport to catch your flight home from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. End of Tour.

17 photos of what it’s really like on a Kenya safari

Kenya safari

A Kenya safari was one of those things that had been on my bucket list forever, but I wasn’t sure when I’d get around to it. When I thought “African safari”, I pictured fancy lodges with elegant beds draped in mosquito netting that I might be able to afford one day.

Turns out, there’s more than one way to safari. Intrepid’s 8-day Kenya Wildlife Safari was everything I was looking for: it was about a week long, affordable and promised wildlife sightings aplenty. Although if I had a bit more time and money, I would have loved to do the 15-day Masai Heartlands trip , which goes into Tanzania, or the 8-day Kenya Safari Under Canvas trip which is a similar itinerary but the accommodation is nicer (think glamping instead of camping).

What appealed to me about all these trips was that not only do you get to spot animals on safari, you also get to spend a day visiting a Maasai village and experiencing their culture.

On my safari in Kenya, I discovered a love of (amateur) wildlife photography and an even deeper love for Africa .

Here’s what a Kenya safari looks like in photos:

Kenya Photo Tours

Immortalized by award winning nature documentaries and hollywood blockbusters alike, kenya needs little introduction to wildlife photographers – the name safari is indeed synonymous with kenya.

This East African country offers the essence of an African wildlife photographic expedition, and besides the phenomenal wildlife, you can expect some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Africa.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve & it’s conservancies are a photographer’s haven as they are teaming with some of Africa’s most sought-after and quintessential wildlife and landscapes. As a year-round safari destination, each season has its own captivating show waiting for you!

From November to February, the Mara is dazzling green and plays host to the calving season. Various antelope, Wildebeest and Zebra give birth, whose offspring become easy prey for the vast numbers of carnivores found in the reserve. This season is dubbed Big Cat season due to the many predator and prey interactions, and combined makes for fantastic photographic opportunities. With less vehicle numbers during this “off” season, grab a front row seat as the Mara puts on a show between predator and prey – welcome to ORYX’s Life of Predators Photo Safari and Women Only Mara Photo Safari!

Considered one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles, the Great Migration sees over 1.5 million Wildebeests and thousands of Zebra and Gazelles traverse a continuous circular route from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti National Park. River crossings are a product of the Great Migration where fierce battles with monster crocodiles are often had and carnivores sit and wait for the opportune moment. This season is when our Best of the Mara Migration Photo Safari takes place for these awe-inspiring scenes and is considered a bucket list item for many!

In order to create the best possible photographic experience, we use only upmarket accommodations throughout our Kenya photography tours, and specially designed safari vehicles to optimise both game viewing and photography. Our small groups enjoy expert one-on-one on tutoring by a professional wildlife photographer and safari guide. Our Kenya photography tours are a truly one of a kind experience not to be missed!

See guest testimonials and have all your questions about  African photographic safaris  answered on my FAQ pages.

5 night Kenya South Rift extension

Kenya’s south rift lies in the Great Rift Valley between the Masai Mara and Amboseli. This is one of the wildest corners of Africa and is a photographer’s playground. Using a helicopter to photograph Lake Magadi and Lake Natron, not only will your memory card fill, but so will your soul. You will enjoy excellent aerial wildlife photography on this extension – watch this YouTube video I made with my iPhone.

The area offers authentic Maasai cultural photographic opportunities as we photograph Maasai shepherds herding their cattle on the dusty floor of the rift valley. This is the most authentic cultural experience you can have in Africa and is not touristy like everywhere else. Lastly, there is an awesome underground hide that we make use of to capture the wildlife in the area. This is an extension to real Africa and the exact place where my personal memoir Wilderness Dreaming culminates. I have been visiting the south rift for the past 20 years and I would like to show you my Africa.

7 night ‘Best Amboseli Photo Safari’ and ‘Big Tusker photo safari’ extension

This one of my most popular extensions. A 45 minute flight from your Masai Mara photo safari  will take you to a private community concession to begin your ‘big tusker’ day 1 of the extension. This concession is one of the best places in Africa to photograph a big tusker and the next two days on your ‘best Amboseli photo safari’ will be spent in this concession, searching for a big tusker called One Tonne. Here we also stake out a waterhole and photograph tuskers coming in to drink . Watch this  YouTube video I made on this Big Tusker Photo Safari. Next we will drive to another community concession and spend 2 nights there in search of one of the giant tuskers called Craig. The following day we drive to the neighbouring conservancy where we continue our search for tuskers. We then drive through Amboseli National Park and into the heart of an exclusive private conservancy. Here on your ‘best Amboseli photo safari’ you have full access to the national park and, more importantly, you will enjoy your own private conservancy, away from the minibus tourist vehicles. Inside the conservancy you will enjoy exclusivity and total freedom as you go about your photography. Our aim on this 2 night leg of your ‘best Amboseli photo safari’ is to photograph beautiful herds of elephants with babies  (and giraffes ) with the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Your camp is situated below Mount Kilimanjaro, where you can enjoy the finest view of the mountain (weather permitting) of any safari camp in Africa. I work with excellent guides who know exactly what photographers want. Our private safari truck is open-sided to maximise your photographic experience. This is the best Amboseli photo safari because it gives you access to four private concessions, all on opposite sides of the ecosystem and also includes Amboseli National Park itself. From big tuskers  to baby elephants and pure East Africa scenery , this itinerary covers it all. Watch a YouTube video from Amboseli and the Masai Mara, made with my iPhone.

Best amboseli photo safari - herd of elephants

5 night Rwanda or Uganda Mountain Gorilla extension

If you are looking to make this a true bucket-list ‘best Africa wildlife photography safari’ then there is no better way of doing this than by booking a mountain gorilla photo safari…

Rwanda and Entebbe are both just a 1 hour flight away from Nairobi so a gorilla photography tour is an ideal extension to your Masai Mara photo safari.  On this gorilla photography tour we will take you to the very place where Diane Fossey did her research. This gorilla photography tour extension includes two full day gorilla photo safari treks and an optional golden monkey trek. This gorilla photography tour extension is booked on a per request basis only and seeing these gentle giants in the flesh is an absolutely INCREDIBLE experience – so don’t think twice about doing it. The lodges are super luxurious in Rwanda.

If you are not specifically wanting luxury, then Uganda is the place for you to experience mountain gorillas. In Uganda you have the advantage of visiting two different gorilla habitats and while the lodgings are more rustic, they are also more than adequate with great local cuisine and friendly staff. The gorilla trekking permits are also half the price of Rwanda but all permits are very limited, so you need to book your gorilla photography tour long in advance.

Get in touch now by filling out the form at the end of this page.

6 night ‘Rhinos, Zebra and Giraffe of Mount Kenya’ extension

This northern Kenya photo safari extension is one of my most popular and is the perfect addition to your Masai Mara photo safari  to make it the best Kenya photo safari.  Watch a YouTube video of this extension (made on my iPhone)…

Not many photographers know this, but a Northern Kenya photo safari, and specifically a Laikipia photo safari, is the best place in Africa to photograph rhino. You can photograph white rhino with babies  as well as the elusive black rhino . You will also photograph Grevy’s zebra (the largest and most endangered zebra in the world) and reticulated giraffe . The birdlife is prolific on this Northern Kenya photo safari and our accommodation is in Kenya’s finest and most luxurious boutique lodges, making this a ‘best Kenya photo safari’.

Don’t miss this chance to photograph the endangered northern rangeland species and you might bump into the rather odd-looking Gerenuk or the peculiar-looking Striped Hyena. With breathtaking views of Mount Kenya on this Northern Kenya photo safari extension, you will also have an opportunity to photograph animal scene photographs  on secret savannahs .

This 6 night Northern Kenya photo safari extension is quite effortless and simply one of the best photo safaris in Kenya. Extend your Masai Mara photo safari  by filling in the form at the bottom of this page and requesting this extension NOW!

Northern Kenya ‘Pink Africa’ extension

4 night ‘Lake Bagoria flamingo photo safari’ extension: This Lake Bagoria flamingo photography safari is the perfect addition to your Masai Mara photo safari  and a sure way to make this the best private African photography safari. 4 nights spent mobile camping on the southern shore of Lake Bagoria will give you the ultimate Lake Bagoria flamingo photo safari experience. This is quite simply the best flamingo photo safari on offer because we have special permission to put a boat on the lake. This means that you will enjoy eye-level, or should I say ‘water-level’ flamingo photography. A helicopter is booked for aerial flamingo photography. Between boating and helicopter flying on this Lake Bagoria flamingo safari, you will get the ultimate flamingo portfolio. The campsite we use is exclusive and one of the finest mobile camping locations in Kenya, next to a clear flowing stream and inside a fig forest. This is as bespoke as it gets and it is one of the best East Africa private photographic safaris you can do.

3 night Lake Logipi flamingo photo safari and Sunguta Valley extension:   Based in the far remote north of Kenya, on route you will fly over the most spectacular rift valley scenery in all of Africa. Photographing Lake Logipi, which currently has the highest flamingo concentrations of any lake (around 4 million birds), will complete your incredible Pink Africa experience. Photographing flamingoes from above is an ‘out of Africa’ experience not to be missed and this Lake Logipi flamingo photo safari offers this in spades. If you have a penchant to go off the beaten track then this Lake Logipi flamingo photo safari extension is definitely for you! Watch this YouTube video now.

pink africa photo safari - flamingoes flying

Everyone who has done the Pink Africa extensions have said that it was the best safari experience of their life.

6 night Tanzania chimpanzee photo safari – trekking chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains

The Mahale Mountains of Tanzania are home to the largest wild population of chimpanzees in the world. Less commercial, more pristine and exclusive than Kibale, Mahale offers the ultimate place to do a chimpanzee photo safari.

We have our own guide and trackers, so you can take your time on this great ape photo safari and if you do not want to hold the group up, you can wait and rest, and then have your own private chimpanzee viewing. This highly exclusive Greystoke chimpanzee experience is regarded among African aficionados as one of the finest safari destinations, and tops the list of any ‘best private Africa photo safari’ itineraries. To get a feel for this extension watch the YouTube video below. Your camp has the most spectacular safari setting of almost any camp, making this one of the best East Africa private photographic safaris you can do.

A great ape photo safari is very challenging from a photography perspective as the forest is dark, with bright highlights breaking through. That is why, on this chimpanzee photo safari, you have a professional wildlife photographer on hand. I have been trekking chimpanzees in Mahale for over a decade now and each morning I will help you get set up with the correct camera settings. On this great ape photo safari you will enjoy three chimpanzee treks. This chimpanzee trekking extension includes 4 nights in the Mahale Mountains and a night either side in Arusha.

great ape photo safari - chimpanzee

4-7 night ‘Wild Ruaha Photographic Safari’ extension

Ruaha National Park is known as the ‘connoisseur’s park’ and not for no good reason, as it offers pure unadulterated wild bush country. This is why a Ruaha photographic safari is included on the best East Africa private photographic safari itineraries…

On this Ruaha photographic safari extension you will enjoy a southern Tanzania safari experience that will take you to parts of Ruaha that few photographers ever get to see. A wilderness safari and canvas camping experience is what this extension is all about. Ruaha is regarded as one of Africa’s wildest bush parks and it has exceptional baobab trees, perfect for star trails.

This Ruaha photographic safari extension is booked on a private request basis only. Watch this Wild Ruaha Photo Safari YouTube video .

Leopard by Paolo Torchio

Accommodation on safari is at Porini Mara Camp and Porini Lion Camp, which are small and authentic safari bush camps with no more than 10 guest tents so that you will have just a few other like-minded people as company. Here you will escape from the crowds and experience the African wilderness without the presence of other tourist vehicles and with the personal attention of your photographer escort.

Transport from Nairobi to the Mara is by scheduled flights to avoid a long journey over bumpy roads and to give more time to viewing the wildlife. From the camps, game drives are taken in exclusive open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles with experienced safari driver-guides.

kenya safari photo

Paolo’s work has appeared in a host of other Kenyan wildlife and travel magazines, including Travel News, Kenya Birding, and About Kenya, as well as in some illustrious wildlife magazines elsewhere in the world. Paolo’s photography has earned widespread acclaim. In 2006 he was declared Overall Winner of the East African Photographer of the Year Award.

His photographs and articles documenting aspects of the region’s animal, bird and insect life have appeared regularly in Swara, the quarterly magazine of the East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS), where they are seen all over the world.

  • Off-road driving advantages get you closer to the wildlife and away from crowds
  • Game drives in the Mara Conservancies and the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • Sundowners at scenic spots where you can try to capture those postcard perfect African sunsets

Comments from recent guests:

Read what our guests say:

kenya safari photo

“I am not a photographer, but even with my point and shoot bridge camera and limited experience I was able to put together some nice shots. Paolo encouraged us to see things differently and of course, having lived in Kenya for years he knows where to look! He and the Porini guides and drivers made a great team. Paolo has a very easy way of working, letting things emerge and responding with his expertise and ideas when needed, gently guiding things along. And he was also a lot of fun to be with!” Denise Finney

“My husband and I have traveled all over the world, and have learned that sometimes things don’t meet our expectations. This was not the case with Gamewatchers – the safari experience they arranged for us exceeded my expectations on every level. From the moment we landed in Nairobi, everything was taken care of – from the airport pickups and transfers, to making sure we were comfortable in our hotel before heading out to the camps, to dietary restrictions and special needs – they do it all. Our Masaai guides gave us the experience of a lifetime. Excellent food, accommodations and care… breakfasts in the field, nightly sundowners – and a professional photographer to teach us how to take great safari shots! I couldn’t recommend this authentic experience any more highly. We were treated like family, and I can’t wait to return again and again. Thank you Gamewatchers!” Patti Pagliei

“Paolo did not disappoint. He worked with our guide and drivers to help find the best angle and lighting. He helped us in our settings in difficult lighting situations. He never told us exactly what to do, but worked with us so we would learn how to find the answer ourselves. I feel that there are photographic lessons that I learned during these 7 days with Paolo that will stay with me forever. He has a great knowledge of the culture and animal behavior. His sense of humor was spot on. In fact, this will not be the last trip we take with Paolo. He is stuck with us as friends forever now!” Tori Bohn

Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to Wilson Airport for the 50 minute flight to the Mara, landing at Naboisho Ol Seki airstrip from where you will be transferred to  Porini Mara Camp (click for more pictures) for 3 nights. Game drives and walks will be taken in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy to photograph the wildlife for which the Mara is famous. Night game drives will also be taken.

A full morning traversing the Naboisho Conservancy from Porini Mara Camp in Ol Kinyei Conservancy to Porini Lion Camp  (click for more pictures) in Olare Motorogi Conservancy with plenty of time for game viewing along the way, arriving for lunch. Afternoon game drive and overnight at Porini Lion Camp where you will stay the next 4 nights.

Day 5, 6 and 7

A further 3 days in the Mara with game drives in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and in the Mara Reserve depending on where your guide considers the best wildlife viewing to be available.

Final early morning game drive and transfer to the airstrip to fly back to Nairobi. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi for your flight home.

We can arrange an overnight stay in Nairobi (at a supplement) at the start or end of your safari depending on your international flight times.

“I am finally documenting the phone call by my wife Donna just after our trip to Kenya with Paul Renner. In short, the safari exceeded all our expectations.

As a long-time underwater photographer, I was overwhelmed by the number of photo opportunities provided, which allowed me to take about 4000 pictures. I usually don’t take this many pictures on any photography trek…

Melting Pot bush camp

Nairobi, Kenya - 5 Places to See if an African Safari is on your Travel Bucket List

W ith a mix of ethnicities and nationalities worldwide, Nairobi , the capital city of Kenya, warmly embraces all her visitors and works to make you at home quickly. Yet despite having a space for everyone who visits, Nairobi still sets itself apart and offers a unique vacation to all its visitors.

If an authentic safari experience is on your bucket list, Nairobi is definitely worth considering. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your trip to Kenya.

The Nairobi Culture

Nairobi is a busy city just like any other city in the world. The streets are bustling as ever and there are tons of places to visit and see. As a Nairobian tourist, it would help to learn a few Swahili words. “ Hujambo ” for greeting or “ Habari yako ”, “ Karibu ” for “welcome”, “ asante ” means “thank you”, “ pole ” means “sorry”, and “ tafadhali ” means “please”. See the incredible thing about Nairobi, nobody expects a foreigner to be fluent in Swahili. Throw in one of the above words and continue your speech in English and that’s more than enough.

Beyond language, politeness is paramount in Nairobi. Tip your servers in the restaurants when you can. Always start all your conversations with greetings and don’t leave too many leftovers . Wasting food is looked down upon in Kenyan culture.

There is no strict dress code in Nairobi, much less for a visitor. Fridays in Nairobi are spent socializing in malls, bars, clubs, and or at restaurants for tea or coffee. If you want a never-ending nightlife, find your way to the Westlands . Indulge in some club-hopping before you retire for the night.

Things To Do In Nairobi

1. visit nairobi national park.

About an hour from the city center, you will find Nairobi National Park. Enjoy an authentic safari experience in the savannah grassland in a park teeming with lions, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeests, and buffalo. The only animals you won’t find here are elephants. It’s an incredible sight to watch the wildlife in their natural habitat with the city’s skyline as a backdrop.

In addition to Nairobi National Park, the city has many animal sanctuaries in the region that are open to the public. Many endangered species of animals like Sokoke cats, buffalos, ostriches, flamingos , hyenas, blue wildebeest, rhinos, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, and black-backed jackal can be seen – both at the sanctuaries and on safari excursions. In addition to endangered animals, some sanctuaries house endangered plants.

2. Explore Maasai Market

Immerse yourself in Maasai culture at this incredible market that changes its location every day of the week. This is in keeping with the Maasai nomadic culture. This market is a must-visit as part of the Nairobi experience. Stroll through the market and experience vibrant colors in beadwork, woven shukas, and house ornaments all handcrafted by the Maasai people.

3. Visit Nairobi National Museum

Enjoyed even by non-museum fans, the Nairobi National Museum is an excellent showcase of Kenya’s history. Located within the city, the museum is a popular destination and easily accessible. Besides Kenya’s history, the museum also takes you through a journey of human ancestors. Explore the snake park within the museum and the beautiful botanical garden.

4. Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage

Located right next to the Nairobi National Park, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the animal sanctuaries that will be the highlight of your trip to Nairobi. Here you will find the most adorable baby elephants. Watch as their caretakers bring them out, feed them, and play with them. Your heart will melt at the bonds between these baby elephants and their caretakers.

5. Have breakfast at the Giraffe Manor

Can you imagine having breakfast while petting and feeding giraffes? The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi is home to the critically endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Founded in 1979, this sanctuary is one of Nairobi’s greatest gems. Meet and learn the names of the welcoming giraffes and take as many pictures as possible with these lovely creatures.

Kenyan Food You Gotta Try

Kenyan cuisine is inspired by over 44 tribes in the country of Kenya. Over time, these meals have made their way through the country and have become staples in households everywhere.

Foodies will find a haven in Nairobi as it offers dishes from just about every part of the world. From delectable and spicy Mexican dishes to creamy pasta, Kenyan dishes have made a name for themselves and serve as part and parcel of a Nairobi experience.

Sample Ugali , a meal made by adding maize flour to boiling water until it hardens. It pairs well with stews and vegetables, especially collard greens Kenyans love to call Sukuma Wiki (push the week). Ask for Pilau , a delicious traditional cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. Try chapati , a Kenyan flatbread inspired by the Indian naan. Vegans will love Kenyan cuisine for dishes such as githeri (a mix of maize and bean), mokimo (pounded potatoes, maize, and greens), matoke (cooked green bananas), and Maandazi , a sweet treat made with leavened flour.

Safety Tips

As with any big city, Nairobi has its fair share of security issues. Here are some tips to keep you safe as you visit:

  • Always keep your valuables close to you. Whether it’s your handbag, backpack, or wallet, make sure it is well-kept. There are pickpockets and tourists can make for an easy target.
  • Don’t walk alone at night – for the most part, Nairobi taxis are pretty safe. When you are out at night, it is safer in a taxi or any vehicle than walking alone. For more safety, you can use ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt to navigate your way through the city.
  • Do a bit of research about Nairobi before arrival. This will familiarize you with the city, which should make your exploration much safer.
  • Stay connected and reachable at all times. Stay online and inform your loved ones of your itinerary and whereabouts every day. Buy a local SIM card for your phone to ensure you have a reliable connection throughout your stay.

A Bucket List City

Boasting as the only city in the world with a national park within its confines, Nairobi is a mix of raw untamed wilderness and vast urban sprawl. Whether you decide to spend your days in Nairobi exploring wildlife in the national park and sanctuaries or embark on a museum blitz around the city, your stay in Nairobi is bound to be unforgettable.

Safari Gravel Shines a Spotlight on Kenya’s Growing Race Scene

The uci gravel world series event attracted nearly 500 riders from around the world..

History was made in Kenya last week, as the nation hosted its first UCI cycling race on Saturday, June 15.

Nearly 500 riders from around the world lined up at Safari Gravel, a new addition to the UCI Gravel World Series this year. The winners of the elite categories and the top 25 percent of finishers in each age group qualified for the UCI Gravel World Championships in Belgium this fall.

Despite the presence of the UCI’s rainbow-striped branding, Safari Gravel had very little to do with the governing body in Switzerland and everything to do with a bright, burgeoning cycling movement in East Africa.

The event debuted last year as part of the Safari Gravel Series, a Kenya-based off-road series with the aim of increasing ridership across the country and giving professional cyclists more opportunities to compete close to home.

Its success on both fronts was evident across the entire field. Many riders from Kenya said that Safari Gravel was their first bike race, while all 19 members of the East African Team Amani and Black Mamba racing teams competed in the elite race.

Additionally, Safari Gravel took place a few days before the Migration Gravel Race in Kenya, so a strong international contingent was in town for both events.

Hans Becking of the Netherlands and Maddy Nutt of Great Britain won their respective races in the elite category.
