I am in the market for an excursion but before I pull the trigger I would like to know a realistic fuel economy of these 7.3 excursions when they are bone stock, no lift, stock tires, no chips I know it depends on how you drive them so please let me know when you drive them without flooring them what is the best you have experienced? I really appreciate you guys feedback. thank you in advance

my wife had an 01, stock hwy 16-18mpg chipped & opening up exaust, hwy 18-21mpg

I've got an '01 and I hit 20mpg with cruise on highway and about 16 in town....No Bull. I bought mine for this very reason two weeks ago. And I can't hardly tell when I'm towing my Full size Jeep. Only mods on my truck are intake and exhaust. I have Cali emmissions on my truck.

Here's my data over 64 hand calculated fuel ups. My modifications are listed. The larger tires that came with my used Excursion hurts my mileage, but the 203* thermostat has helped on my 7.3's. The X...sometimes pulling the big trailer (Ford Excursion) | Fuelly Includes towing information, attempts at additives, etc. Your geographic location will impact winter mileage. Can get pretty cold here in Wisconsin. That, along with lower Btu winter fuel, impacts mileage in cold months for me.

WOW SD26, that is one impressive spread sheet. thank you for sharing. those numbers are very helpful and a bit disappointing at the same time but at least it is realistic. thank you

LOL! Yeah, life sucks, eh? Yes, I nearly hit 19MPG a few times. My life time MPG includes towing a big trailer and a small trailer. Does have an impact in the overall average. As does winter in Wisconsin. 13-14MPG in the cold seems to be pretty regular for me. Definitely is in the 16-17MPG range in the summer. My regular work commute is about 24 miles, so I get good and warm. It's not interstate driving; it's rural, mostly, has about ten stop signs, and takes me 35 minutes plus to do. So, I wouldn't call my MPG highway. That kind of helps, right? As for the spread sheet, fuelly.com is free. I just like to load it up with data. One has to read it carefully as what goes in the tank might reflect on the next MPG and my driving notes are based upon the previous data's fill. I don't think my DP Tuner necessarily netted any kind of a real gain in MPG. I would like to go to a narrower tire, maybe a 255/85 or a stock 265/75...or maybe even a 235/85...but that's a cost that I don't want to incur right now. The big 285's look good and have a lot of tread left. Might make a simple air dam for the front. Doubt I will get a big gain on my regular commute, but maybe a little more on long trips. What kind of MPG are you hoping for? The Excursion is heavy. I think that hurts it, but it is such a comfortable vehicle. There is a real value in having it for it's great towing ability, comfort in people hauling, and general utility. The DP Tuner makes it just that much more fun to drive also. :icon_ford:

With a cold air intake and 4inch exhaust: Summer diesel - I get about 14 to 15mpg in the city. On the highway - I've gotten 19mpg, but not using any A/C or Cruise. I found that if I used the cruise - I lost 2mpg on the highway.

My mileage is similar to SD26's. I have MBRP 4" exhaust, AIS intake and hydra chip set on 80hp tune. I use Diesel Kleen too. I've only had the beast for a few months, about 8k+ miles. Big difference between city and highway. The excursion hates traffic but loves to cruise at 65.

You should have no issues hitting 20 highway MPGs. I get 18-19 summer 16-17 winter. Mostly highway miles. Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

Ive driven all interstate road trips and got 21.5 . we get about 16 -17 in town. Its running stock with 3:73 gears running LT285/75R17's Ours is a 2000 Ex &.3 with 315,000 miles

Does anyone in this thread have a 2wd EX? If not can someone chime in on what a 2wd 7.3l average mpg is?

I would say it's going to be very close to a 4x4.

We get 13-14MPG avg city/hwy with ours, keeping it under 70. 2WD 200k and bone stock California emissions. What are we doing wrong? Wife drives like a granny. I think I'd need to hook it to the back of a semi and put it in neutral to see 20 the way this thing drinks the juice...

Mine with stage 1's 160 stock nozzles, TW tunes and a 38r gets 16.5 towing 10k, just checked and 18+ on the Hy.

4wd 2.5inch lift , 33inch mud grabber tires , 4 inch straight pipe aih delete , intake and 6 pos chip set on 75 hp , i get 16.5 mpg hwy ( mountains) and about 14 mpg city hwy mix .....thats doing calculation right at the pump

2001 7.3 4x4 LTD. I'm about as stock as you can find these anymore, with 283k miles, we get around 15-17 city and right around 20mpg highway depending on how much I speed.

I'm not the most careful driver but I have a hard time believing some of these numbers. 2000 Ex 4x4 Limited Big filter - 4" MBRP turbo-back w/ muffler - SCT 90 Tune Running 285s and a level kit. I have an app that calculates costs and such including mileage. Best I have seen is a combined 13.86mpg.

Your right shiny armor. Quite a few on here that are delusional with their #'s. I've owned 15-20 6.9/7.3 IDI's 92-97,&99-03 including trucks a E-350 15 passenger yoder otter& our excursion. General rule of thumb is 94/up psd's will get 12-14 city 16-18 hwy. keep in mind there r variables, ( miles, condition& prior maintenance , gear ratio , auto or manual, empty or towing etc.etc.) if someone tells you they are getting 15 mpg or better towing 10,000 lbs or more just turn around & walk away.

rendimiento excursion diesel

My 2000 with a 4" lift and 35's was 14. I would refer to the Fuelly App and browse the excursions on there. You can see all the excursions , different years , drivetrains , and get a real world idea of what to expect , not what someone netted one time or someone going off the overhead display. Going off Fuelly will give you the BEST and most accurate idea of what to realistically expect , period.

Excursion 7.3 vs. 6.0?

  • Add to quote

Hi all: Just bought a 31' travel trailer (8365 lb dry) that my 5.4 Expy just won't handle, particularly up a hill. I am currently in the market for a used diesel Excursion. I am new to the diesel world but decided that is definitley the way to go. I have heard that there are some concerns about certain model years of the diesels (the early 6.0's ?) that I am trying to get input on. Are the 7.3's (00-03?) as bullet proof as I hear? Which years/models would you recommend and whoch would you say to stay away from? I appreciate any input from the experienced crowd out there. Thanks!

I have a 7.3 with 280K with original tranny, injectors, etc. I have replaced one alternator and one belt tensioner. It is all stock as far as the engine itself. I bought it used, so I don't know what the previous owner did in the way of chips or programmers. I have not used anything yet. I find it very reliable. I know many people that are happy with their 6.0 L engines. Maybe you could see if you can get an oasis report on whatever you think you want to buy and see what issues it has been to the dealer for. I think PSN forum has a section where you can request these reports. I hope you find a good one. We really enjoy ours. steve

rendimiento excursion diesel

I disagree about the weak tranny issue withe the 7.3 It generally always came back to some abuse during it's life. I much prefer the 7.3 and it's durability. Mine's still going strong with ALL original parts (except cam sensor of course) with a measly 160,000 miles. Many of them towing a heavilly loaded 24' car hauler. The truck is still perfect although I've since gotten rid of the trailer.

TurboDave, I agree on the tranny. Mine is still solid at 280K. It is mostly a daily driver, but it also tows a 30 travel trailer in the mountains occasionally. Worse, I putter around on two track roads in the mountains. Slow speeds, lots of heat produced in the tranny as the torque converter is not locked up at low speeds. I have seen tranny temps go pretty high (250 to 260). I upgraded to the 6.0L tranny cooler and that solved the heat issue. Personally, I would pick the vehicle you like based on the engine reliability. Either a 7.3 or a 6.0 that has been low maintenance for a lot of miles. Steve

I have never seen a 4r100 transmission go over 150k... usually they fail well before that. But we use them in ambulances. 14,000 pounds and the worst sort of driving there is. Even with the possibility of transmission problems, I would take a 7.3 any day of the week. The 6.0's end up on a wrecker quite often, and the 7.3's only had an occasional CPS sensor go out.

rendimiento excursion diesel

I have one of each. The 6.0 gives me fits now and then. Since new. The dealership could never "confirm" a problem. It has not died as yet. But it is scarry sometimes. The 7.3 just runs. I only have about 98k miles on it but it just goes and goes. Pulling a car carrier, only one car, you don't even know it is back there. Except when you look in the mirror and see a car coming in through the rear window and your heart skips a beat because you did forget it was there. I do have a TS Performance chip and I run it on the additional 50hp setting. That gives me 325 horses. I have never had to use the 75hp or the 125hp settings. I did a couple of times when the chip was new just to see how that many horses were on an 8000# truck. Awsome is the word I would use. But with the 325 horses I have found that sufficient to do what I want.

I like my 6.0, runs strong, and only had to replace ICP sensor since I have had it (two years). I think both are good and its more a matter of driving style and maintenence than anything else.

My 00 "X" just split an injector cup but other than that has never missed a beat. 212,000 all stock. Does pull 9,000# when asked to. I just dont like the springs on it. About 3 leafs in the rear and I think I have about 1" of travel left up front.

Thanks for sooo much valuable feedback. It looks like there are diehards for the 7.3 and fans of the 6.0 as well. Regarding the 6.0 issues of 2003-2004 (?). Being that the issues of those years appear to have been fairly major, is too far a stretch to assume that any 6.0's from those years that experienced the problems would have been rectified by now and therfore fairly reliable at this point ... or if the issues had not arisen by now, that they probably won't? Just not to about the extent of the issues and if they were actually fixable or a major design flaw that will live with the motor forever. Thanks again.
