Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep

Agatti island.

Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities.  The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.

Where To Stay:

Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.

Do check the latest update on the official tourism site.

Agatti Island

Bangaram Island

Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.

Where To Stay:

The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).

Travel Time

  •  From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.

Bangaram Island

Pareli 1 & 2

These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.

The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.

No options. These islands can be visited as day trips from Bangaram, Agatti or Thinnakara

  • From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
  • From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
  • From Thinnakara: 15 min

Lakshadweep Itinerary

A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.

Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.

Cottages on the Island

  • From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.

Thinnakara

Kadamat Island

Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.

The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.

Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.

Kadamt

Minicoy Island

Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.

There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.

Minicoy Island

Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.

The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.

Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).

Kalpeni

Kavaratti Island

It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.

Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.

I am planning a trip to lakshdweep in january, I will be alone and do not want to spend much on stay. Please suggest whether i can get some cheap stay after reaching there, or prebooking/e-booking is required? Please note I am a solo traveller and I generally focus on sightseeing and local cuisines and culture. I can manage with some cheap accomodation.

December 9, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi Prashant, you need a permit to travel to Lakshadweep. This permit is arranged by SPORTS or any other travel agent which takes care of your lodging (the details of travel agents are on the SPORTS Lakshadweep website). We would highly recommend a pre-booking. For more details, you can check the website of SPORTS Lakshadweep.

' src=

November 27, 2022 at 4:41 pm

I want to plan my own trip and not go for any package. Will Sports help me get permit if I only book my lodgings through them?

Thanks for detailed tour guide. I really like to visit this place. Carry some nostalgic memories. My father was working in Minicoy long time back when I was a toddler. So I wan to see the place again taking with my mother. Can you please suggest a 2-3 days (max) itinerary covering Minicoy. I want to see Minicoy.

December 3, 2016 at 10:30 am

Glad you liked our post, Minicoy is near Kalpeni & Kavaratti so either you can plan to visit one of the islands and visit Minicoy on a day trip or you could check weekend cruise packages from Cochin.. hope that helps

December 26, 2016 at 7:08 pm

What is the approximate total cost for a week trip. I want to mainly know how much we would spend on daily stays at each island and the no of ppl on sharing basis.

' src=

January 21, 2017 at 9:41 am

Awesome post! It’s so confusing the information on google about these islands! Just wondering – is Minicoy an inhabited island? Just because you mention that there are 3 guest houses owned by locals there. Also if we were to book a few days through SPORT and stay at their accomodation, could we extend our stay and stay at local accomodation somewhere? Do we need to apply to SPORTs to be able to stay in local accomodation? I just assume local places would be cheaper?

' src=

February 17, 2017 at 7:39 am

Awesome tips. Thank you so much for this post. Being located so close to use, Lakshadweep is in the top of my wishlist! I really hope to go soon…

July 15, 2017 at 4:19 pm

did you book the whole trip through SPORTS ?

July 16, 2017 at 1:44 pm

Not the whole trip only the accommodation and transfer between islands … food is inclusive

' src=

July 26, 2017 at 4:50 pm

hey..Thanks for the informative post.. Though I have a query.. you have given quite a detailed information of the islands while SPORTS website is mostly about about the cruise packages and they dont cover all the island either. Did you guys make your own itinerary and visited the place via flight. Would it be possible for you to give an idea about the ititnerary you followed.

July 30, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Thanks a lot, Nimisha….We have mentioned everything about our itinerary in this post only 🙂

History of Lakshadweep

A Greek sailor first discovered the present-day Lakshadweep in the 1st Century CE. It was regarded as a source of tortoise shells back then. In the 7th Century, the continuous contact of the Arab traders and the Muslim missionary activities led to the conversion of fellow islanders into Islam.

A few years before 1100, a small Hindu Kingdom on the Malabar shore took over the island. Another small Hindu dynasty came into play after the fall of the Kulashekhara Dynasty of Kerala in 1102, passed to the Kolathiris.

Around the 12th Century, the marriage of a Kolathiri Princess and a Muslim convent established a separate Kingdom in Kannur(Cannanore) in Kerala. The kings and queens continued ruling the island. Tippu Sultan gained control of the northern group of islands called the Amindivis in the 1780s. When Tippu Sultan died in a battle with the British in 1799, the British took over the Amindivis.

The income from the other island remained in the hands of Bibi and her husband as long as they agreed to make an annual payment to the British. Due to the continuous failure of the payments, the Bibi was forced to give up the administration at the hands of the British. India gained control of these islands in 1947, during independence. In 1956, the islands were constituted into a Union Territory.

My journey led me to the enchanting Agatti Island in Lakshadweep, and the experience was nothing short of magical. I was immediately captivated by the pristine beauty that unfolded before me. The beaches of Agatti are adorned with soft white sand and surrounded with turquoise waters.

Having personally explored Agatti, I was captivated by its geography, especially the enchanting lagoon that surrounds the island. Picture a lagoon as a shallow, clear-blue playground nestled between the land and the deeper sea, shielded by natural barriers like coral reefs or sandbars. Agatti’s lagoon is like a magical, transparent pool where marine life thrives, creating a stunning underwater world.

Now, let’s talk about corals – these are living organisms that build intricate structures underwater. They come together to form coral reefs, which are like bustling cities beneath the sea. The coral reefs around Agatti are like underwater gardens, bursting with a riot of colors and teeming with fish and other sea creatures. It’s like stepping into a vibrant, underwater wonderland.

Agatti, though a small island, is a haven of tranquility and safety, especially for families with kids. One of the notable features that add to its charm is the absence of rough waves, creating a gentle and serene environment along its shores. This makes the island a particularly safe and enjoyable destination for children, allowing them to play in the shallows with ease.

During my visit, I discovered a myriad of activities tailored for all ages. The calm waters made it perfect for family-friendly adventures, and I took full advantage of the offerings. A glass-bottom boat ride provided a captivating glimpse into the underwater world without getting wet, making it an ideal choice for those wanting to explore the vibrant marine life without diving in.

For a bit of adrenaline, the banana boat ride was an absolute thrill. The island’s tranquil waters transformed into a playground of laughter and excitement as we rode the waves. Snorkeling, another highlight of my Agatti escapade, offered a more immersive experience into the underwater wonders. From vibrant corals to colorful fish, every dip was a journey into an aquatic realm.

Also, one of the question I had before visiting Agatti was whether veg food is available on the island.

Yes, vegetarian food options are available on Agatti Island. While the cuisine in Lakshadweep, including Agatti, is prominently influenced by seafood due to its coastal location, you will find vegetarian dishes as well.

I discovered small stalls offered a variety of vegetarian dishes on the beach, including traditional Indian fare such as rice and dal, veg biryani, and comforting veg 2-minute noodles. From the refreshing taste of coconut water to the crunch of banana chips, these stalls provided a taste of local flavors.

Floating in the clear blue waters of Lakshadweep, snorkeling was an amazing experience for me. I hoped to see a turtle, but unfortunately, I couldn’t spot one. Still, watching the colorful fish and exploring the lively coral gardens was like entering a whole new world beneath the waves.

The water was so clear that every movement of the fish seemed like a dance, and the ocean’s gentle rhythm added to the magic of the moment.

Also, my 9-year-old boy also loved this experience. so can say it is safe for kids.

Also, you do not need to know swimming to try this experience.

A First-Timers Guide to Visiting Lakshadweep Islands, India

Lakshadweep Agatti Island

Welcome to the enchanting world of the Lakshadweep Islands, a pristine archipelago situated off the southwestern coast of India in the Arabian Sea.

Known for their untouched beauty and serene beaches, the Lakshadweep Islands offer a unique tropical getaway far from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

This guide is designed to introduce first-time visitors to the magical charm of Lakshadweep , detailing why it’s a must-visit destination and what makes these islands a unique treasure trove for travelers.

Lakshadweep is not just another beach destination; it’s an experience of isolation, tranquility, and natural splendor that you rarely find elsewhere.

Each island in this archipelago is a hidden gem, boasting crystal clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and lush green landscapes.

The islands are less commercialized compared to other beach destinations in India, which helps preserve their exotic and unspoiled charm.

For those looking to escape into a paradise where the rhythms of life are dictated by the tides and the winds, Lakshadweep is the perfect choice.

The uniqueness of Lakshadweep lies in its geographical and cultural tapestry. Geographically, it is one of the few places in the world where coral atolls form a region.

This results in spectacular marine life and offers some of the best diving spots in India, with opportunities to swim alongside turtles and colorful fishes, and even spot dolphins.

Culturally, the islands are steeped in local traditions and largely influenced by their Indigenous tribes, providing a rich tapestry of experiences that range from folk dances to the cuisine influenced by coastal flavors.

Moreover, Lakshadweep’s remoteness adds to its allure, creating a sense of adventure from the moment you begin your journey there.

The islands are accessible only by permit, which ensures that tourism is controlled, thus preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of the islands .

This careful preservation makes each visit feel exclusive and private, catering to those who cherish privacy and peace.

Planning Your Trip

lakshadweep

A trip to the Lakshadweep Islands requires careful planning, not only to make the most out of your visit but also to ensure that all legal and logistical requirements are met.

From understanding the best time to visit to navigating the entry requirements, here’s everything you need to know to plan your journey to this tropical paradise.

Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep

The ideal time to visit Lakshadweep is between October and May when the weather is dry and relatively cooler, making it perfect for beach activities and water sports.

The monsoon season, from June to September, is less ideal as the seas are rough, and many water-based activities like snorkeling and diving are off-limits due to poor underwater visibility and strong currents.

How to Get There: Transportation Options

The most common way to reach Lakshadweep is by flight. Agatti Island has the only airport in the archipelago, with regular flights from Kochi (Cochin) in Kerala.

The flight offers a spectacular aerial view of the coral atolls, making it a breathtaking introduction to what awaits you.

For those who prefer a more leisurely journey, passenger ships are available from Kochi to various islands like Kavaratti, Kalpeni, and Minicoy.

These voyages offer a different experience, allowing you to enjoy the vast expanse of the sea, although they take longer than flights, often up to 18-20 hours.

Entry Requirements and Permits

Entry to Lakshadweep is restricted, and tourists require a special permit that can be obtained through registered travel agents or by applying with the Lakshadweep Administration.

Indian nationals need to obtain a permit from the Lakshadweep Administration, while foreign nationals also require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP).

It’s crucial to arrange these permits well in advance of your travel dates to ensure everything is in order.

Planning your budget for Lakshadweep is crucial as the cost can vary significantly depending on your choice of accommodation, transport, and activities. Here are some tips to help you budget effectively:

  • Travel and Accommodation : Flight costs to Agatti are generally higher than sea travel, but save time. Accommodation ranges from luxurious resorts to more economical government-operated tourist huts.
  • Daily Expenses : While meals and basic amenities are reasonably priced in government facilities, private resorts tend to be more expensive. Plan your meals and choose accommodation that includes food to save on additional costs.
  • Activities : Budget for activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, and boat tours, which are the main attractions but can be pricey. Many operators offer packages that may reduce costs.

By planning your travel carefully and being aware of all requirements and costs, your trip to Lakshadweep can be both memorable and within budget, allowing you to enjoy the serene beauty of the islands without financial worry.

Where to Stay

lakshadweep overwater bungalows

Selecting the right accommodation in Lakshadweep can greatly enhance your island experience.

The islands offer a variety of staying options, from luxurious resorts to cozy guesthouses and homestays, catering to different tastes and budgets.

Here’s a guide to help you choose the best place to stay during your visit.

Overview of Accommodation Options

Resorts in Lakshadweep are well-known for their exclusivity and breathtaking locations, often situated right on the beach.

These offer comprehensive amenities such as dive centers, guided tours, and water sports facilities.

Popular choices include the Agatti Island Resort and Bangaram Island Resort, where you can enjoy private cottages with direct access to the beach.

Guesthouses

For a more budget-friendly option, guesthouses are available on islands like Kavaratti and Minicoy.

These accommodations provide basic amenities and are usually managed by locals, offering you a chance to experience genuine Lakshadweep hospitality.

Homestays are an excellent way to immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine.

They are also the most economical option.

Homestays allow for greater interaction with the local communities and are ideal for travelers looking to stay longer and explore the islands more deeply.

Recommendations for Different Budgets

  • Luxury : For those not sparing any expense, resorts on Bangaram and Agatti offer luxury beachfront cottages with incredible views and privacy, alongside high-end amenities and services.
  • Mid-range : Guesthouses on islands like Kavaratti and Kadmat provide comfortable lodging at reasonable rates, often including meals and basic snorkeling gear.
  • Budget : Homestays, particularly on less commercialized islands like Chetlat and Bitra, offer minimalistic, yet charming accommodations that are wallet-friendly.

Tips on Booking Accommodations

  • Book Early : During the peak season from October to May, it’s crucial to book your accommodations well in advance as places fill up quickly due to the limited number of available options.
  • Use Reliable Booking Platforms : Stick to well-known booking platforms or direct bookings through the resort or guesthouse websites. Ensure that your bookings include clear cancellation policies and customer support.
  • Consider Package Deals : Many resorts and some guesthouses offer packages that include meals, transportation, and sometimes even activities like snorkeling and day tours. These can be more cost-effective than booking everything separately.
  • Read Reviews : Before making any bookings, read reviews to ensure that the accommodation meets your expectations and to get a sense of the service and amenities you can expect.

With these tips and options, you can find the perfect place to stay in Lakshadweep, whether you’re looking for a luxurious retreat or a more culturally immersive experience.

Whichever option you choose, the stunning natural beauty of Lakshadweep will surely make your stay memorable.

  • Waterproof Bags : Protect your electronics and important documents while on boat transfers or during water activities.
  • Snorkeling Gear : While you can rent gear, bringing your own ensures it fits well and is comfortable.
  • Flip Flops and Water Shoes : Ideal for the beach and wet landings on boat trips.
  • Basic Medications and First Aid Kit : Include medications for common travel-related ailments like seasickness, especially if you plan to travel between islands by boat.
  • Reusable Water Bottle : Stay hydrated and reduce plastic use on the islands.

Weather Considerations and What to Expect

Lakshadweep enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures relatively consistent around 25-35°C (77-95°F) throughout the year. However, weather considerations include:

  • Dry Season (October to May) : This is the best time to visit, with less rainfall and calmer seas, ideal for marine activities.
  • Monsoon Season (June to September) : Expect heavy rains and rough seas, which can disrupt travel and outdoor activities. Many services and resorts might also be closed during this period.

Communication: Connectivity and Staying in Touch

Staying connected in Lakshadweep can be challenging due to its remote location:

  • Mobile Connectivity : Not all islands have strong mobile phone coverage. Check with your provider about coverage areas and consider purchasing a local SIM card for better connectivity.
  • Internet Access : Internet services are available but can be limited and slower than on the mainland. Larger resorts and some cafes may offer Wi-Fi, though it’s often not very reliable.
  • Emergency Communication : Ensure you have contact numbers for local authorities, medical facilities, and your home country’s embassy or consulate, if applicable.

Preparing effectively for your trip to Lakshadweep not only involves packing appropriately but also understanding the local weather patterns and ensuring you have viable means of communication.

With these preparations in place, you can look forward to a hassle-free and enjoyable island adventure.

Lakshadweep, with its stunning coral reefs, turquoise waters, and untouched natural beauty, offers a unique escape unlike any other in India.

This archipelago promises an unforgettable experience where the hustle of modern life fades away, leaving space for peace and tranquility.

From the unparalleled beauty of its underwater world to the pristine sandy beaches that line each island, Lakshadweep is a paradise for nature lovers, adventurers, and those seeking solitude alike.

The islands offer a rare glimpse into untouched marine ecosystems with vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life, making it a premier destination for snorkeling and scuba diving.

The rich culture, influenced by maritime traditions and local customs, adds a unique flavor to the visit, enriching your travel experience with every interaction.

The limited accessibility of Lakshadweep also ensures that it remains one of the most pristine natural environments in India, with tourism managed in a way that respects both nature and local cultures.

Whether it’s the adventure sports, the leisurely pace of island life, or the warm hospitality of the local communities, Lakshadweep offers an array of experiences that are both rewarding and inspiring.

islands to visit in lakshadweep

Though the Lakshadweep archipelago may appear as a few insignificant dots on the map of India, it is, in fact, a sparkling diamond- and emerald-studded jewel adorning India’s southwestern frontier. It is one of the few marvels left untouched by the encroaching hands of industrialization and progress.

The white beaches, the lagoons that wash its shores with the coral reefs which enclose it, and finally the deep blue sea-all these are symbiotically linked with each other. And, when all these are added up, Lakshadweep is no longer the tiniest of India’s territories but the largest!

While the total area of the 35 islands is a mere 32 sq km and the area of the lagoons enclosed by the coral reef about 700 sq km, the extended sea zone is more than 7,00,000 sq km! This almost makes it the size of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh put together!

Out of the 12 atolls with 35 islands, only one island in each of them is inhabited. All the islands are shaped like a boat with their backs resting on the reef in the east and lagoons washing their shores on the west side. The lagoons are shallow, never more than a couple of meters deep. Just as the sands on the beaches are pure white and sugary, the waters of the lagoons are crystal clear and clean.

While there may be occasional rainfall, the islands retain their natural beauty, and tourists can enjoy relatively quieter beaches and more affordable accommodation options compared to the peak season. Off Season: The off-season in Lakshadweep occurs during the monsoon months of June to August when the islands experience heavy rainfall and rough seas, making travel challenging and water activities unsafe. Tourist facilities may operate on a limited basis, and some islands may be inaccessible due to adverse weather conditions. It's not recommended to visit during this time due to the potential for disruption and inconvenience caused by the monsoon weather.
