Matt Fitzpatrick in six-way tie for lead at European Masters, aims to secure automatic Ryder Cup spot

Change Text Size

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland – Matt Fitzpatrick began his bid to win a third Omega European Masters title and seal an automatic place on the European Ryder Cup Team by shooting 7-under 63 to take a share of the first-round lead on Thursday.

The 2022 U.S. Open champion had a bogey-free round in the picturesque, mountaintop surroundings of Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club and was tied with fellow Englishman Eddie Pepperell, Masahiro Kawamura of Japan, John Axelsen of Denmark, Gavin Green of Malaysia and Nacho Elvira of Spain.

That looks well within Fitzpatrick’s grasp given the start he has made. He also won the event in 2017 and ’18.

Other Ryder Cup hopefuls began encouragingly, too.

Among those in the group one stroke off the lead were Yannik Paul of Germany, who is in a six-way fight for the third and final automatic place on the European Points List, and Ludvig Aberg of Sweden. The PGA TOUR University Ranking winner is hoping for a captain’s pick from Luke Donald.

Robert MacIntyre currently occupies that third spot on the European list and opened by shooting 68. Paul is MacIntyre’s closest challenger and will jump above the Scottish player with a win in Switzerland.

Of the others bidding for an automatic spot ahead of MacIntyre, Adrian Meronk of Poland shot 67, Adrian Otaegui of Spain and Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark shot 69s, and Victor Perez of France shot 71.

The European Masters is the last event in Ryder Cup qualification. Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton are already on the European team, and Donald will make his six captain’s picks on Monday.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, current nr 9 of the world ranking, to chase a 3rd title

After winning the Omega European Masters twice in 2017 and 2018, Matthew Fitzpatrick has continued his rise, competing mainly on the PGA Tour in the United States. Thanks to his solid performances, he is currently 10th in the world ranking. The good news is that he will be lining up at the Omega Euorpean Masters in Crans-Montana! More information

Yannik Paul, 14th in the Race to Dubai, at the start in Crans-Montana

As for Yannik Paul, he made history in 2016 when he and his twin brother Jeremy became the first set of twins to play in the same European Tour event at the BMW International Open in their native Germany. The 29-year-old came to the spotlight late in life, winning his first tournament, the Mallorca Golf Open, last October, in his first year on the DP World Tour. Since then, he has performed extremely well, with two second place finishes in February at the Hero Indian Open and Thailand Classic in Asia, and a third place at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed in June. In addition to this outstanding first half of the year, he has two top 10 finishes to his name, which suggests that he will be able to shine on the Severiano Ballesteros course in his debut appearance.

Matt Wallace, runner-up in 2022

Britain’s Matt Wallace is playing mainly on the PGA Tour this year. Last March, the 33-year-old lifted the trophy at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, and still holds two Top 10 finishes in 2023 on the PGA Tour. To date, he has won four times on the European Tour. Last year, he finished second of the Omega European Masters, losing the title in a thrilling play-off. For his fifth participation, he is hoping to go a step further and take home the coveted trophy.

2015 champion Danny Willett will be taking part in the 2023 tournament

Danny Willett, whose greatest victory was undoubtedly at the Augusta Masters in 2016, will be taking part in the Omega European Masters for the thirteenth time. Willett's list of honors includes seven wins on the European Tour, a Grand Slam title and, most recently, a second-place finish on the PGA Tour at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. He has also been rewarded for his consistency by finishing second in the final rankings of the Race to Dubai in 2015 and 2016. The 35-year-old will undoubtedly be a tough opponent to deal with at the tournament in Crans-Montana.

Younggun Justin Suh in Crans-Montana for the first time

Californian Justin Suh plays mainly in the USA, but he was number one in the world amateur golf rankings between October 2018 and April 2019. Thanks to his first place on the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour, he earned his card for the PGA Tour, where he already has three top 10 finishes to his name. The 26-year-old still needs to gain experience but will undoubtedly be motivated to fight for overall victory.

2021 winner Rasmus Højgaard, confirms his participation

The young Danish prodigy Rasmus Højgaard, who won the Omega European Masters in 2021, will be present at the 76th edition of the prestigious Valais tournament.

At the age of 22, Rasmus Højgaard is continuing to progress. Revealed at a very young age when he won the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open at the age of 18, becoming the third youngest winner on the European Tour in the process, the Dane celebrated his fourth title on the DP World Tour two weeks ago with a victory on home soil at the 'Made in HimmerLand' tournament in Denmark. With a prize money of €507,458, it was undoubtedly his most important win to date.

This triumph also repositioned him in the European rankings, where he now sits in 14th place, meaning a potential selection for the Ryder Cup to be held in Rome next September.

Rasmus Højgaard will be playing in the Omega European Masters for the third time. He appreciates the course not only for its outstanding landscapes, but also for the many options that make it particularly attractive to play. After a less-than-successful edition last year, when he was forced to withdraw in the final round, the 2021 winner is certainly hungry for revenge. His current shape suggests that he holds all cards to challenge for victory again this year.

33rd appearance at the Omega European Masters for Miguel Ángel Jiménez

The Spaniard with the multiple longevity records has confirmed his 33rd participation in the Omega European Masters, which will take place from 31 August to 3 September 2023 in Crans-Montana.

With 720 appearances in European Tour tournaments and the oldest player to have won a tournament in Europe (the Spanish Open in 2014), Miguel Ángel Jiménez is a key figure in European golf. His record includes 21 European victories and 13 on the PGA TOUR Champions, including three last year.

At the age of 59, he continues to put in excellent performances and is currently ranked 7th on the PGA Tour Champions in the United States. After finishing 5th in the PGA Senior Championship in May, he is starting in his second major of the year, the US Senior Open, today.

The Omega European Masters is a tournament close to Miguel Angel Jiménez's heart. The 2010 winner will be returning to the course at Golf-Club Crans-sur-Sierre, which he loves so much. "It's my favourite place to play golf and I love coming back here every year. You only have to look around to see what I love about it. I don't know how many more years I have ahead of me, but as long as I feel capable of making birdies, you'll find me at the Omega European Masters.

2022 Champion, Thriston Lawrence, to defend his crown

The first player to confirm his attendance for the 2023 tournament, South African Thriston Lawrence, winner of the 2022 edition, is delighted to put his title at stake in Crans-Montana.

The rising South African star has, since his playoff victory over Britain's Matt Wallace in Crans-Montana, claimed the South African Open Championship title on home soil last December.

This victory was his third on the DP World Tour. His maiden success, at the Joburg Open 2021, marked the start of the DP World Tour era, of which he became the first winner.

During the 2022 season, he picked up two victories, six more top 10s, including a third-place finish at the Irish Open in July, and also entered his first Major in July at the Open Championship and then competed at the US PGA Championship last May.

He thus becomes the first South African to be named "Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year" for the 2022 season. The 26-year-old enjoyed a terrific breakthrough season last year, finishing 14th on the Race to Dubai rankings.

Tickets for the 2023 tournament are already on sale, and a special 'pre-sale' rate will apply until 15 August 2023. So don't wait any longer to book your tickets for this extraordinary event.

Omega European Masters: The debrief

Ludvig Aberg claimed his first DP World Tour title in his ninth event as a professional with a stunning finish at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club to win the Omega European Masters .

Here is everything you need to know from a dramatic week in Switzerland.

Aberg brilliantly claims first pro win

Ludvig Aberg reeled off four birdies in a row on the back nine to surge to his first professional victory at Crans-sur-Sierre.

In the sun-bathed Swiss Alps, the Swede carded a superb closing 64 to finish 19 under par, two shots ahead of compatriot Alexander Björk.

For much of the final day, it had looked like overnight leader Matt Fitzpatrick would emulate Seve Ballesteros as a three-time winner of the event, but he bogeyed three of the last four holes to finish in a tie for third with Scotland’s Connor Syme.

What made Aberg’s victory all the more impressive was his composure. He began the final round with a bogey and was three adrift of Fitzpatrick when the former U.S. Open champion Fitzpatrick birdied the 13th.

Yet, this only seemed to instigate a spectacular run of scoring for Aberg – playing in the penultimate group of the day – to climb to the top of the leaderboard as Fitzpatrick bogeyed three of his final four holes.

“I don't even know where to start, it's a pretty surreal feeling to be honest,” said Aberg, who becomes the fourth consecutive player to win on debut in Crans-Montana. “Obviously super, super happy.

“I've always had that belief that I've been able to do it, but to do it is pretty cool.

“Winning any tournament is a lot of fun, to do it this quickly (as a professional), I’m over the moon.”

Newest member to the winners’ enclosure

Success for Aberg sees the run of first-time winners on the DP World Tour continue.

Following on from English pair Daniel Brown and Todd Clements’ triumphs in Northern Ireland the Czech Republic since the resumption after the summer break, Aberg becomes the fifteenth player to celebrate their debut title on Tour.

During the entirety of the 2022 season there were 13 players who broke into the winner’s circle.

Will we see another player earn their maiden Tour title when the K Club plays host to the Horizon Irish Open later this week?

While Fitzpatrick may not have been able to don the Red Jacket at Crans for the third time, his performance was good enough to overhaul Tommy Fleetwood on the World Points List.

A third Ryder Cup appearance awaits him, while MacIntrye will make his debut in the biennial contest, qualifying via the European Points List.

The pair join Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton in Captain Luke Donald’s side to face the United States at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome later this month.

Captain Donald said: “There are many major milestones in every Ryder Cup journey but there is no question that finalising the automatic qualifiers for Team Europe is most definitely one of them.

“These six players have been standout performers throughout the qualification period and I am delighted to welcome each and every one of them officially to the 2023 team.”

Donald will complete his 12-player team when he announces his six Captain’s Picks on Monday, with King of the Mountains Aberg among those expected to be under consideration for inclusion.

Another week, another fine showing by Alex Fitzpatrick

It’s been a summer to remember for Alex Fitzpatrick and it shows no sign of stopping.

Since qualifying for his first Major Championship at The Open last month, the 24-year-old has put together an impressive run that includes his first professional win on the European Challenge Tour at the British Challenge to all but secure his card on the DP World Tour next season.

After finishing as the runner-up in Northern Ireland a couple of weeks later, he finished in the top 15 last week and was again around the top of the leaderboard on his first visit to Crans Montana.

Despite a pairing of him and his Major-winning brother Matt not materialising over the weekend, a fourth sub-70 round on Sunday sealed a share of fifth place as he continues to underline his status as one of the rising stars of the game.

Positive signs for Migliozzi and Syme

It's been a tough season for Guido Migliozzi but the Italian showcased his undoubted talent in the Swiss Alps as he threatened to register a 59 on his way to carding the lowest round of his DP World Tour career with a brilliant 61 on Friday.

The three-time DP World Tour winner came into the week 114th in the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex but a final round of 63 helped him to finish in a tie for 13th and climb 13 places to just outside the top 100. With the defence of his Cazoo Open de France title coming up later this month, the Italian will hope the performance can provide him the springboard to enjoy a strong finish to the campaign.

Meanwhile, Connor Syme built on his momentum by recording his second top five in his last two starts as a closing 66 helped the Scot to a tie for third - his best finish of the season. He is now ranked 61st on the Race to Dubai and will hope to kick on and secure a spot in the top for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Pros put in their place by 14-year-old

Most of us can only dream of competing with the pros on the DP World Tour, but then again most of us don't possess the swing of 14-year-old scratch golfer Liliya Favre, who found the eighth green with this excellent six iron during the third round.

Near-aces stack up

Despite no shortage of accurate tee shots by the field, there were no holes-in-one at Crans-sur-Sierre, meaning we remain at 31 for the campaign.

Here, we take a look at some of the best of those attempts over the week.

While the United States roster may be set for Rome , there are several Europeans still vying for positioning at this week’s DP World Tour event.

Rory McIlroy (European Points List), Jon Rahm (European Points List), Viktor Hovland (World Points List) and Tyrrell Hatton (World Points List)  have already automatically qualified , and the final two automatic spots — one spot from each points list — will become official after Sunday’s final round of the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre GC in Crans Montana, Switzerland.

Matt Fitzpatrick (15 under), who sits three points behind Tommy Fleetwood for the final World Points List automatic spot, will look to close the deal Sunday when he tees off with a two-shot lead thanks to a third-round 3-under 67.

The Englishman has seen a resurgence in his game over the last month, tying for second at the BMW Championship and for ninth at the Tour Championship, and it seems his stellar form has made the trip with him across the pond.

After playing his first 12 holes 2 under Saturday, Fitzpatrick stumbled at the par-3 13th, putting his tee shot in the water and eventually signing for a double-bogey 5. He got right back on the horse, however, making birdies at Nos. 14, 15 and 18 to solidify his two-shot advantage.

If Fitzpatrick is able to earn a spot on Luke Donald’s squad, it’d be his third appearance at the biennial event (2016, 2021).

One of the faces in Fitzpatrick’s rearview mirror is Ludvig Aberg, a rising star in the game who is a heavy favorite to be one of Donald’s six captain’s picks. ( Data Golf says Aberg has a 70.4 percent chance to make the team , ninth among all Europeans). In seven starts on the PGA Tour this season, Aberg grabbed four top-25 finishes highlighted by a T-4 at the John Deere Classic.

The Swede has been solid all week, opening with a 64 on Thursday and following it up with a 67 on Friday. He kept the momentum going on moving day, firing a 4-under 66 that has him tied for second alongside Alexander Bjork and Connor Syme.

Aberg’s performance in Switzerland shouldn’t come as a surprise as he tied for fourth at last week’s D+D Real Czech Masters. If he can chase down Fitzpatrick on Sunday, it’d be his first win as a professional.

Alex Fitzpatrick, Matt’s younger brother, and Nicolai Hojgaard are tied for fifth at 12 under, three back.
