The Admissions Welcome Center

The Office of Admissions recruits prospective students by highlighting The University of Texas at Austin’s unique value, and by demonstrating why a UT degree will help them achieve their goals.

The team provides tours and info sessions to campus visitors, showcasing the University and helping prospective students and their families explore life on the Forty Acres.

They actively collaborate with colleges, schools, and campus partners to provide the best possible experience for students seeking to enroll at UT Austin, and they connect students with counselors who can answer questions and provide resources.

Admissions is responsible for processing and evaluating all aspects of a student’s application, and then holistically reviewing all students who have submitted a complete application to UT Austin for both freshman and transfer admissions. Finally, they make and then communicate admission decisions for all undergraduate students applying to UT Austin.

KD College Prep

15 Places to Check out on Your UT-Austin Visit

By Emily Brehe

January 17, 2020

So you’re thinking about becoming a Longhorn? A campus visit should be your next step.

For advice on things to do on a University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin) campus visit, we turned to the President of KD College Prep, David Dillard, UT ‘78, and Thomas Dang, current freshman at UT and former KD student. They each shared their favorite places on campus and insight on what makes each site an authentic piece of the UT-Austin experience.

Scheduling Your Visit

First things first—you need to schedule your UT-Austin campus visit .

A guided tour for prospective students gives families a chance to see various aspects of campus, ranging from campus hangout spots to classrooms to dormitories. Tours are usually led by current college students who can answer your specific questions about the school and tell you what to expect.

Remember to have fun, and don’t forget to look for these 5 Hidden Things to Spot on a College Visit .

UT-Austin offers a lot to do without ever leaving campus. You can spend hours exploring the campus’ variety of museums, landmarks, shops, and restaurants. Try to dedicate a full day to your tour in order to see all that the campus has to offer.

1. The UT Tower

History, Culture, Insta-worthy

The UT Tower , aka the Main Building, is hard to miss. The 307-foot-tall landmark can be seen from virtually anywhere on campus and is one of the most recognizable symbols of the university. At night, the tower is lit up to honor special occasions, such as a UT sports victory.

“During the first week of school, they light up the windows with the freshmen class’ graduation year. And then they’ll do the same thing when you graduate,” said Dang.

One hidden gem within the tower is the Life Sciences Library. It’s the original library on campus, and it has a Harry Potter vibe. Dang says it’s a great place to take photos for Instagram.

“Of course, you’ll have to stand on the front steps of the Tower to get your photo taken in front of the words inscribed there,” Dang said. “ …It’s one of the more Instagram-worthy spots on campus.”

During “Tower Tours,” visitors can view the campus from the Observation Deck, located at the top of the Tower. You may even catch a glimpse of Tower Girl , the building’s resident peregrine falcon.

2. Harry Ransom Center

Art, History

The Ransom Center is home to UT-Austin’s vast archive of manuscripts, rare books, art, film and more. The library houses famous pieces such as the Gutenberg Bible, Edgar Allen Poe’s desk, Albert Einstein’s unpublished notes, and original works by Frida Kahlo, to name a few.

Visitors can take a look at these rare items in the Reading and Viewing Room. If you’re interested in getting up close to these rare and historical materials, view the guidelines here .

3. Littlefield Home

The Littlefield Home is a Victorian house located north of the UT Tower. This historic building was home to Civil War veteran George Littlefield and his wife Alice, who reportedly still haunts the building. The two made significant contributions to UT-Austin in its early years, providing funds for the Main Building, the Littlefield Fountain, and the Littlefield Dormitory.

4. Little Campus

The Little Campus was built in 1857 and is home to some of the oldest buildings on UT-Austin’s campus. The facility predates the university by nearly 30 years.

Over time, this area has served as the Texas Asylum for the Blind, General George Armstrong Custer’s family residence, a barracks for World War I & II, the Texas Hospital for the Senile, and a men’s dormitory.

5. Blanton Museum of Art

Art, Coffee, Insta-worthy

If you like art, the Blanton Museum has it all. With a collection that ranges from ancient Greek pottery to digital comics, you’re bound to find something that piques your interest. You can also grab coffee or a sandwich at the museum’s cafe.

blanton museum of art ut austin

6. The Drag

Coffee, Food, Shops, Culture, Insta-worthy

UT-Austin has its own shopping and arts district on the edge of campus. Here, you can take Instagram pics next to murals, grab coffee at Lucky Lab Coffee Co. or Caffe Medici, pick up Longhorn merch at the University Co-op, or get queso at the Kerbey Lane Cafe—open 24/7.

“The Drag is the hub where students go after classes. It’s the ideal hang-out spot,” Dang said.

7. The Skyspace

Art, Insta-worthy

UT-Austin is home to one of Texas’ three Skyspace exhibits by artist James Turrell. “The Color Inside” is open to the public. Visit during sunrise and sunset to see color fill the space for about an hour.

“Sitting in this room will make you think about how we see things and how we think about color,” Dang said.

8. Scholz Garten

History, Food, Culture

Scholz Garten is a 150-year-old German restaurant and bar. A mix of college students and congressmen frequent this location, creating a unique atmosphere.

9. Dirty Martins

Want to grab a burger near campus? Try Dirty Martin’s (also known as Dirty’s). This old-school burger joint has fed college students for nearly 100 years.

10. Broken Spoke

History, Food, Dancing

After a long day walking around campus, you’re probably ready to kick off your shoes and get a little Footloose. Luckily, Austin has its very own Honky Tonk bar where you can learn how to two-step or catch a country music legend in the making. Check the calendar to see if there are any interesting events happening while you’re in town.

11. Home Slice Pizza

Food, Culture

Home Slice Pizza is one of the more student-friendly restaurants in Austin. It has a hipster vibe, and you can snag dinner for under $20. They have two locations and also offer delivery.

12. Ladybird Lake

While in Austin, you can choose from a wide range of parks, trails, and recreational activities. For those who love the outdoors, we recommend renting a paddle board or kayak at Ladybird Lake. You’ll fall in love with the breath-taking views of downtown Austin from the shoreside.

“There’s this really awesome trail. If you go in the morning, the water shimmers, and over the lake you can see the Austin skyline,” Dang said.

13. Zilker Park

Recreation, Insta-worthy

This 351-acre park is most well-known as the location for Austin City Limits Music Festival that occurs every October. Dang says that if you’re going to live in Austin, you have to check it out.

Barton Springs

Within Zilker Park, you’ll find this pool fed by an underground spring that keeps the water cool year-round. The pool itself has a lot of history and is home to Barton Springs Salamander, an endangered species.

“The water is very, very cold so a lot of people go here to swim. It’s really nice in the summer or fall,” Dang said.

14. South Congress Bridge

Large groups of locals and tourists gather at South Congress Bridge from around 7:30 to 8:30 pm to watch thousands of bats take flight . From March to November, these Mexican free-tailed bats congregate under the bridge. They fly out at night and feed on moths, mosquitoes, crickets, and other small insects.

15. Mount Bonnel

For an even better view of the city, we recommend taking the short trek up Mt. Bonnell. The paved trail is 0.3 miles long and will bring you the highest point in Austin.

“Once you hike up the trail, you have this wonderful view. If you go in the evening you can even see the sunset,” Dang said.

So, what’s next?

As you can see, there’s plenty to do on and off campus. After you’ve visited the college, it’s time to decide whether or not you want to apply. We offer college counseling services to help guide you through the college admissions process. Contact a campus near you to learn more.

UT Tower 360° Virtual Tour

The UT Tower

For over 80 years, the UT Tower has been the academic symbol and architectural emblem of The University of Texas at Austin.

The 307-foot-tall Tower was completed in 1937. For many years, the Tower was the tallest building in Austin.

The Tower will light up to announce university achievements and darken with a solitary white cap for significant solemn occasions.

Designed by French architect Paul Cret, the Main Building and the Tower was built to house the university’s central library. Rising 27 floors above the reading rooms, the Tower housed the library’s book stacks.

The Main Building and Tower were financed through a grant from the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program created during the Great Depression.

Today, while much of the Main Building is used for the President’s Office and other administrative offices, students can still study in the grand reading rooms, which now contain the Life Sciences Library.

UT Austin professor arrested and fired after confronting police at pro-Palestinian protest

Rich Heyman talks to police at the April 29 protest at UT Austin.

The Texas Department of Public Safety arrested a UT Austin professor Wednesday after he allegedly grabbed a state trooper’s bicycle and shouted expletives at officers during a pro-Palestinian protest last week. The professor has since been fired by UT.

The story was first reported by the Austin American-Statesman .

State police last week accused Rich Heyman, a lecturer who teaches courses in the Department of American Studies and the College of Liberal Arts, of interfering with public duties. This is a Class B misdemeanor, according to state penal code. KUT reached out to Heyman, but he referred reporters to his lawyer, Gerry Morris. Morris said Heyman, who was not tenured, received an email from the university on Thursday stating that he was fired. No reason was given.

Heyman, 57, attended pro-Palestinian protests on the university's South Lawn on April 29. Over several hours that day, police arrested 79 people , charging the vast majority of them with criminal trespass. In total, more than 130 arrests have been made on the UT Austin campus over the past several weeks of protests.

According to a state trooper’s account detailed in an arresting document, Heyman approached police during last week's protest and began shouting obscenities. “F--- you. You don’t belong here,” police allege he said.

As officers surrounded protesters on the university's South Lawn, they used their bicycles to set up a blockade. State trooper Thomas Goodson alleged that Heyman walked between two bicycles and the officer pushed him away “with an open hand to the chest."

Goodson said Heyman responded by holding a Nalgene water bottle above his head and pulling on Goodson’s bicycle, breaking his state-issued bike bell, which cost $62. Morris, Heyman's lawyer, refutes this narrative. He said Heyman grabbed the officer's bicycle to stop himself from falling backward after the officer pushed him.

State troopers arrested Heyman outside his home on Wednesday afternoon. Officers surrounded him while he was driving, Morris said.

A spokesperson for UT Austin said the university does not comment on personnel matters. Texas DPS did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

Heyman had previously attended another rally where faculty gathered to condemn the university's response to a pro-Palestinian protest the day before. Police made 57 arrests. Eventually, the Travis County Attorney dropped all the charges.

"[UT Austin President Jay Hartzell] didn't explain how the decision was made to call in the riot troops that provoked violence from what was a nonviolent, peaceful protest," Heyman told a KUT reporter that day.

Heyman was scheduled to teach three university classes in the fall, two of which are waitlisted, according to a review of UT Austin’s course catalog.

“These are really essential classes in his program, and he has a long track record of employment with the university,” said Anne Lewis, an executive board member of the Texas State Employees Union. “He’s an accomplished, needed employee at the university.”

Lewis confirmed Friday that Heyman had been in touch with the organization for legal resources. Heyman has worked at UT Austin since 2006, according to his résumé.

Lewis said UT Austin’s actions during the recent protests are part of a larger pattern of the university over-complying with the state Legislature and neglecting workers’ rights. Lewis pointed to the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion-related layoffs last month .

“It’s a real over-response on the part of the university and a lack of understanding of the rights of employees to free expression, to assembly, and to association," she said. "If [UT Austin] did this, they can do anything."

Morris, Heyman's lawyer, said he felt the university's firing of Heyman was also an overstep.

"I'm really disappointed in my alma mater," Morris told KUT. "You would think they would wait and investigate the incident. ... They just want to appear tough."

Professors at universities across the country have been arrested while protesting, including at UCLA, Emory University and Dartmouth College. It's unclear if other professors have been fired.

Lauren McGaughy and Chelsey Zhu contributed to this story.

KUT journalists are employees of the University of Texas, but UT has no editorial control over their reporting.

How involved was APD in the UT pro-Palestinian protests? Here's what officials say

how to tour ut austin

After a push from some Austin City Council members, Austin Police Department officials briefed the city's governing body Tuesday about the department's involvement in actions against the pro-Palestinian protests at the University of Texas, explaining details about arrests, mutual aid agreements and who signed off on the involvement.

Arrests were made by UT police at the April 24 and 29 protests where people were calling for the university's divestment from Israel and the end to the Israel-Hamas war.

UT's police department called on Austin police through a mutual aid agreement — an agreement commonly used between law enforcement agencies to assist one another. Austin police took people to jail and helped put people into custody who were already placed under arrest by UT police.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were also involved in breaking up some of the protests.

Here's what Austin police officials said about the department's involvement in the protests:

Did Austin police make any arrests at the UT protests?

Austin police officials told the City Council on Tuesday that all the protest arrests were made by UT police. The people whom Austin police took into custody had already been placed under arrest by the UT police, the council was told.

Previously, the Travis County sheriff's office said the Austin Police Department was the arresting agency on four of the 79 arrests made in relation to the April 29 protest. Spokesperson Kristen Dark told the American-Statesman on Tuesday that Austin police officers are listed as the agency that booked four people into jail in relation to the protest.

However, as university officials filed the charging documents in those four cases, they were technically arrested by the UT police.

What is law enforcement mutual aid?

As it relates to the Austin Police Department, a mutual aid agreement allows Austin police to assist other agencies or call upon other law enforcement agencies for additional resources.

"This is so routine and so frequent that agencies assist one another, it's outlined in our policy," Assistant Police Chief Eric Fitzgerald told the City Council on Tuesday.

Austin police have a "memorandum of understanding" with the UT police, Fitzgerald said. Additionally, state law gives Austin police concurrent jurisdiction on the UT-Austin campus.

"The city of Austin is liable for our officers and their actions," City Attorney Anne Morgan said Tuesday in response to a question from Council Member José “Chito” Vela. "The MOU (memorandum of understanding) says that ... we're responsible for workers comp, for liability, those kinds of things."

Who signed off on Austin police involvement?

Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson ultimately signed off on sending officers to campus, Austin police officials said Tuesday.

The request was made from the university police chief to Henderson. Assistant Police Chief Lee Rogers was the "duty chief that day," he told the City Council on Tuesday.

When speaking about mutual assistance agreements, Fitzgerald said, "If 911 call responses are going to be impacted, that information will be relayed to city leadership." He did not say whether or not that occurred.
