Occupying the southern half of the Korean Peninsula is the country of South Korea. Completely distinct and independent from neighboring North Korea, South Korea is a thoroughly modern, engaging and thrilling destination for travelers. Major cities like Seoul offers the buzz of an urban metropolis along with fantastic nightlife and a chance to discover the latest technological marvel.

However, South Korea is also home to scenic national parks and plenty of places where you can slow down and enjoy the atmosphere. From islands off the coast to the fearsome border zone in the middle of the Korean Peninsula, there are countless things to do, see and explore on your next trip to South Korea.

10. Suwon [SEE MAP]

The city of Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province, and it is just 30 km (20 miles) outside of Seoul. It is easily accessible from Seoul by car or train, but it often skipped over by travelers.

If you visit, you’ll be able to see the World Cup Stadium, affectionately called Big Bird, that hosted the quarter finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. If you’re not a soccer fan, head instead to the historic 18th century Hwaseong Fortress, where you can tour the architecture and even try your hand at archery on the premises.

9. Chuncheon [SEE MAP]

Surrounded by scenic lakes and towering mountains in Chuncheon, the capital city of Gangwon Province. Chuncheon is the location of a popular Korean soap opera called Winter Sonata, and a lot of visitors in the city come to see some of the most common filming locations.

Other travelers come for the food, because Chuncheon is known as a foodie’s paradise. After touring major attractions like the Soyang Dam, Statue Park or Cheongpyeong-sa Temple, head to Dakgalbi Street. This street features the dish dakgalbi, a grilled chicken meal with spicy vegetables and rice. Dozens of restaurants on the street offer the same iconic dish, each offering slight variations on the recipe.

8. Busan [SEE MAP]

The second largest city in the entire country is Busan. It’s also a major port, and it is known for boasting beautiful beaches as well as hot springs and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Busan’s Gamcheon Cultural Village, known as the Santorini of Korea, is a stunningly colorful hillside community overlooking the water.

While in Busan, you’ll also have the chance to visit several temples, the most popular of which is Beomeosa Temple. While the city boasts all the shopping and museums you might expect from an urban area of its size, some of the most popular attractions include Haeundae Beach, Taejongdae Park and the beautiful Nakdong River Estuary Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

7. Jeonju [SEE MAP]

At the peak of the Joseon Dynasty, Jeonju was its spiritual capital. Today, Jeonju is filled with temples and museums and is one of the best places to visit in South Korea. If you want to embrace the local culture and get to know its history, make your way to the Jeonju Hanok Village.

There, you can see traditional homes from the early 20th century, make the traditional Hanji paper or sip the locally made soju. Another popular attraction in the city is the impressive Jeonju National Museum, home to a staggering collection of artifacts. While in Jeonju, try the famed Korean dish Bibimbap, which originally comes from this region.

6. Seoraksan National Park [SEE MAP]

If you want to go hiking, see the best known mountain range in South Korea or just get some epic photos, then make sure you visit the Seoraksan National Park. Within the park you’ll find pine forests, jagged and rocky mountain peaks, crystal clear streams and stunning lakes.

Seoraksan National Park is also home to over 2,000 animal species. Start your visit at the National Park Visitor Centre, where you can pick up free maps in English and Korean. Then, enjoy the miles and miles of signposted hiking trails that crisscross the entire park.

5. Andong [SEE MAP]

At more than 2,000 years, Andong is sometimes referred to as the Capital City of Korean Spiritual Culture. Perhaps the main attraction in the city is the Andong Hahoe Folk Village, where local cultural heritage has been preserved and is shared with visitors.

However, it is foodies that will most enjoy a visit to Andong. The city boasts all kinds of local specialties, starting with a famed chicken and noodle dish called jjimdak. Andong is also home to a special type of alcohol called soju, so have a sip before you depart the city.

4. Jeju Island [SEE MAP]

Off the southern coast of South Korea is Jeju Island, the country’s only Special Autonomous Province. Nicknamed Island of the Gods, Jeju is a subtropical destination known as one of the top honeymoon and vacation spots in South Korea. In addition to beautiful beaches, lava tubes and lush green scenery, Jeju boasts a long list of tourist attractions and amusement parks.

You can get to know the local culture at the Seongeup Folklore Village, or you could visit Glass Castle, a theme park that revolves around glass sculptures. Perhaps the oddest and most controversial attraction in Jeju is Loveland, a theme park featuring romantic and adults-only attractions.

3. DMZ [SEE MAP]

The DMZ, or demilitarized zone, is the boundary area between North and South Korea. It is considered a cease-fire zone. While travelers can visit the DMZ, not all areas of the zone are safe. Only a small portion of the DMZ, known as the JSA or Joint Security Area, is open to the public.

In the JSA, you can physically stand in North Korea, although you will be within a building that also houses South Korean soldiers. You can also visit a North Korean gift shop that sells stamps, wine and currency from North Korea. Be aware that the only way to visit the DMZ is on an authorized and guided tour.

2. Gyeongju [SEE MAP]

Gyeongju is the ancient capital of what was once the Silla Kingdom. This makes the city more than 2,000 years old. Gyeongju is an incredible destination that boasts a number of temples and cultural festivals. Start your trip at the Bulguksa Temple, a true masterpiece of Buddhist religion and art that dates back to the 8th century. Then, hike up from the temple to the Seokguram Grotto for even more Buddhist culture and artifacts.

Don’t miss the Covered Market, a collection of vendors selling everything from Silla souvenirs to freshly made Korean delicacies.

Seoul is by far the largest city in South Korea and a major destination in East Asia. If you’re spending any time in the country, there’s a good chance you’ll be visiting Seoul at some point. There is no end to the attractions in the city, but many visitors start with some of the many palaces located in Seoul.

Top picks include the incredible Gyeongbok-gung and the 15th century Changdeok-gung. You’ll also find ancient temples and shrines, beautiful public parks, cutting-edge design, shopping malls and some of the best cuisine in all of Asia.

I am Korean, but live in US and I think you missed Kwangju, where Korean Democracy started and Moodeng Mount is beautiful and lots of performance of Korean traditional music. Whenever I visit Korea, I love to visit that city where you can feel the spirit of Korean.

There are so many amazing things to do in South Korea and this list won’t even capture it all – but it’s definitely a start and a great introduction to what to do in South Korea on a first trip! South Korea is an incredible country to visit with amazing cities, lovely villages, great food and some of the best hikes! In no particular order – here are the 20 best things to do in South Korea!

1. Visit Gyeongbukgung

Gyeongbukgung is one of the most beautiful palaces in Seoul . There are five palaces in Seoul and all of them deserve a visit – but if you only have time for one, make it Gyeongbukgung. It was built in 1395 and was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty.

Make your visit to the palace memorable by renting a hanbok for a few hours. Hanbok rental stores are hard to miss when visiting South Korea and there are a few rental shops right around the corner from Gyeongbukgung. Find the link on Klook here –  Hanbok Rental Klook

2. Have a traditional Korean meal

Eating Korean food is one of the best things to do in South Korea and should definitely be on your South Korea bucket list! Enjoy a traditional Korean meal at Osegye Hyang ( location ) in the gorgeous streets of Insadong.

When entering, it’s polite to take off your shoes and sit on cushions on the floor instead of chairs. Along with your meal, you’ll be served lots of little side dishes called Banchan ! The best meal to have when you first arrive in South Korea!

3. Stay in a Temple

Temple stays are a cultural programme in South Korea as a way to experience the Buddhism lifestyle and practices. It’s our favourite thing we did in South Korea and we’d 100% go back to stay in more temples around the country. We highly recommend – Golgulsa Templestay ! (Near Gyeongju & Busan)

4. Take the train to Busan

If you’ve ever seen the horror/action movie Train to Busan – then taking the train from Seoul to Busan must be on your South Korea bucket list! Remember, it’s just a movie!

You can book your ticket on the KTX  here –   Korail Train Tickets . It’s a quick 2 hour 15 minutes from Seoul to Busan and the tickets are usually around ₩45,000 – ₩65,000. If you’re on a budget, then intercity and express buses are generally cheaper but slower in South Korea.

5. Explore a Hanok Village

Another one of the best things to do in South Korea is to explore the many hanok villages that can be found around the country. Bukchon Hanok Village may be the most popular village to explore in South Korea as it’s located in Seoul. It’s absolutely beautiful and should be on your South Korea things to do list! Find Bukchon Observatory for an impressive view to see the tops of the preserved buildings!

6. Visit the DMZ

If you’re spending a few days in Seoul you may be interested to visit the Demilitarized Zone of Korea in between North and South Korea. It’s an important part of the country and there’s so much history to learn about the Korean War. This can only be done on a tour –  book tickets with Klook here !

7. Spend a day in Gyeongju

Wondering what to do in South Korea? Take a visit to the beautiful city of Gyeongju also known as a museum with no walls . This ancient city has preserved remains and tombs from many years ago and it was once the residence of Silla rulers for over 1000 years. 8. Eat Korean street food

We’ve already mentioned that Korean food should be on your South Korea bucket list – and now we want to tell you to try Korean street food! There are so many markets around the country that have amazing choices when it comes to food. Gwangjang Market is our favourite food market in Seoul!

• Tteokbokki (Rice cakes in a spicy sauce)
• Gun Goguma (Roasted sweet potatoes)
• Mandu (Korean dumplings)
• Gamja-Hotdog (Korean-style corn dog covered with potato)
• Dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken with a sweet spicy coating – There’s vegan options too!)
• Bindaetteok (Mung bean pancakes)

9. Hike in Seoraksan National Park

Seoraksan National Park is one of the most impressive hiking spots in South Korea. Sokcho (the city nearby) is only a bus ride away from Seoul and has accommodations to stay in for anyone who wants to spend a day or more in the park.

Hiking Seoraksan ( Snow Rock Mountain ) should be on your things to do in South Korea if you love hiking! Challenge yourself to reach Ulsanbawi – a six-peak formation with gorgeous views of the mountains. It takes around four hours one way or there’s actually a cable car going a similar way.

10. Wander around Insadong

Seoul is a destination that must be on your South Korea bucket list and one of the best things to do in South Korea is to wander around the beautiful streets of Insadong.

11. Hike to the top of Seoul Tower

Next up on your South Korea bucket list is hiking in Namsan Park (Seoul Tower). Don’t worry, it’s not as long as the hikes in Seoraksan National Park and it’s right in the heart of Seoul. It’s actually possible to get a bus up to the top and the base of the tower.

The views are incredible from the park and one of our favourite things to do in South Korea. You can also go o the top of the tower for a better view of the city. Tickets are really affordable on Klook – so make sure you  buy your ticket in advance!

12. Go to a K-Pop concert

K-pop is very popular in South Korea and people also love it around the world! For some fans, it’s the main reason they visit South Korea! K-pop is short for Korean popular music and is a big part of South Korean culture. Check tickets on InterPark or search the web! It’s such a South Korea bucket list moment to be able to watch K-pop live in the same country it originated from!

13. Try bibimbap

Bibimbap is a big part of Korean cuisine and it’s easily customizable for anyone which means it’s great for vegetarians in South Korea. Bibim means mixing rice and bap refers to the rice.

The Korean dish is usually topped with kimchi, gochujang, vegetables or protein and mixed up before being eaten. It’s one of the tastiest and most nutritious dishes in South Korea and originated in Jeonju!

14. Explore Jeju Island

Jeju Island has to be on your South Korea bucket list, unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to visit the island on our South Korea trip and are definitely planning a visit there next time!

The island is known for its stunning nature, waterfalls, the highest mountain in South Korea and lovely beaches. It’s a popular getaway for Koreans to escape the business of cities on the mainland. The country isn’t short on things to do in South Korea to spend your days!

15. Stay in a Hanok in Jeonju

Jeonju Hanok Village is home to over 700 Hanok homes that are still being used to this day. Some are people’s homes and others have been turned into accommodations for guests. Staying in a hanok is one of the best things to do in South Korea!

We highly recommend staying in the accommodation Jungdam ( Find here on Booking.com ) – right in the heart of the traditional Korean village! In hanoks, the sleeping set-up is Korean Style (on the floor!)

16. Try out Noraebang (Karaoke)

Noraebang is the Korean name for Karaoke (which is Japanese ). South Koreans love Noraebang and you’ll find plenty of Noraebang rooms in cities around the country. Most noraebang will rent a room by the hour to sing your heart out! It’s common to see clips from older K-dramas in the rooms too, so it’s a fun experience!

17. Shop in Hongdae

You can’t take a trip to Seoul without visiting the vibrant and trendy neighbourhood of Hongdae. Visit one of the many cafes in the area to join in with the popular cafe culture in South Korea. Hongdae is also a great place for nightlife and amazing street performers! Add this to your bucket list in South Korea!

Hongdae  is one of the hip and trendy areas of Seoul, with many shops, restaurants and themed cafes. It’s also a great spot for nightlife alongside Itaewon. Street performers

18. Take a trip to Nami Island

Nami Island is a popular day trip from Seoul and one of the best things to do in South Korea in any season but especially in the Fall. The trees and foilage come alive in peak season and it’s a cosy place to visit!

From Seoul catch a train to Gapyeong Station, then a bus and from there it’s a 10-minute ferry over to the island! You can even take a zip wire onto the island! Nami island is also known as the final resting place of General Nami who was part of the Joseon Dynasty and a filming location for K-dramas such as Secret Garden and My Love from the Star.

The best way to get to Nami Island is to book a tour with Klook , prices are usually discounted and you can choose what activities to do. A Nami Island day trip is also included in the Klook Seoul Pass !

19. Gamcheon Culture Village

Visiting Gamcheon Culture Village is another one of the most interesting things to do in South Korea and a must when visiting Busan! The village has come a long way since the Korean war when it was populated by poor residents of Busan.

The Tourism board of South Korea chose to bring the village to life with art and creativity in the hope to attract visitors. It soon became a beautiful attraction with cute cafes and trendy shops and now it’s a spot to add to your South Korea bucket list!

20. Learn about history at the National Museum of Korea

Lastly on this South Korea bucket list, is to take a visit to the National Museum of Korea in Seoul – the largest museum in South Korea ! There is a collection of more than 310,000 historic artefacts dating back thousands of years.

The museum is easy to reach by Seoul’s public transport. It’s also free to enter this museum, so it’s perfect if you’re looking for things to do in South Korea!

So that’s our 20 best things to do in South Korea bucket list – it’s definitely not all the best things to do in the country, but now you can add to this to create your perfect trip. Here are a few more suggestions for you!

Best things to do in South Korea (Weather)

December – February ( Winter ) – Go skiing or snowboarding! If you’re visiting South Korea in the winter, it’s the best time to hit the slopes or have fun in the snow! Build a snowman, create a snow angel or go on a winter hike. The winter is pretty cold in South Korea, but it’s definitely worth a visit to see the country magically covered in snow!

March – May ( Spring ) – Once the snow has melted away and nature starts brightening up again, South Korea is covered in beautiful cherry blossoms. Japan is well known for the Sakura season all over the world, but South Korea gets the same lovely blossoms. Visit in Spring to be a part of the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival!

June – August ( Summer ) – This season is pretty different to European summers. South Korea experiences typhoons and the rainy season in the summer months. It’s usually hot and humid with lots of rain, although there will be sunny days too! We visited in early June and it was getting hot but no rain.

September – November ( Fall ) – Another beautiful season to visit South Korea – the foilage in October is absolutely beautiful and should be a season on your South Korea bucket list. Spring and Fall may be the best seasons to come to Korea.

What to pack for South Korea?

Depending on the weather, you’ll want to pack the clothes you usually wear, plus a good pair of footwear! We wear trainers everywhere (even when wearing hanbok oops!) and it’s definitely needed in the cities or on short hikes. Here are a few travel essentials we always carry:

Rising almost 500 meters above the city, this communications and observation tower provides dramatic views of the city from its perch on the side of Mount Namsan. A cable car whisks you up the side of the mountain to the base of the tower. From here, you can go up in the tower and visit any one of four observation decks, one of which is a rotating restaurant.

There are five different dining experiences at the N Seoul Tower and, of course, several gift shops. The n.GRILL, on the top level, is considered one of Seoul's best French fine-dining restaurants. The creek is also home to the spectacular Seoul Lantern Festival , held each November. Ornate, lighted paper lanterns are displayed in and along the creek, and each night, thousands of people line the creek to view and enjoy the floating artwork. Set within the strikingly beautiful landscape of the Bukhansan National Park , Jingwansa is an ancient temple complex offering many ways to experience and learn about Buddhism and temple life. The traditional buildings are surrounded by miles of hiking trails (you can come here just to hike) snaking through the mountains.

The temple, which grows most of its own food (and even ferments its own kimchee), has a range of public programs. Known by its initials, the DDP is a very cool design center in Seoul's Dongdaemun area. Dongdaemun, Seoul's fashion district, is also known for its shopping; there are a lot of department stores and discount clothing and houseware stores in the area. The DDP has changing art and creative exhibitions open to the public, as well as a very cool store inside.

The silver, orb-like flowing Dongdaemun Design Plaza building looks like something from outer space. It was designed by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, considered one of the great female architects of the modern era. In perhaps Seoul's ultimate contrast, there are ruins of the ancient city fortress preserved just outside the front entrance of the design center.

The complex is filled with showrooms, workspaces, offices, and design studios. There is also what has to be Seoul's coolest shop, with small craft vendors selling all kinds of interesting items showcasing contemporary design and locally made, handcrafted items. It's an excellent place to buy unique gifts.

A visit to the DDP is one of the best things to do in Seoul at night — the design center comes alive when the sun goes down, the highlight being 25,550 white LED roses that light up. The silver-colored, modern, curving building and the rows of artificial flowers make the DDP one of Seoul's best Instagram spots.

After your visit, head across the street for a burger and crinkle-cut fries at one of Seoul's most popular new dining spots, Shake Shack. It's right across from the DDP in the Doota shopping mall.

● Suwon Hwaseong Museum (Presents the whole history and culture of Hwaseong Fortress)

South Korea is an incredible country to explore. Now, one of the things I love most about the country is how diverse it is. Not only does it have some incredible vistas and protected coastlines, but it also has some of the best places in South Korea that are dotted all across the country.

That’s the thing about South Korea, it’s got a whole heap of places that I’m almost certain you’ll want to explore. It’s the kind of country where you’ll visit once and be questioning where and how you’ll be heading across again. Well, this is the case for me at least.

Truth be told, after visiting Seoul , I just wanted to see so much more of the country. That’s why I wanted to share some of the best places in South Korea I think you should visit. Best of all, I’ve tried to pop a few from all over the country – this way, it doesn’t matter where you’ll fly into.

1.) Gyeongju

Perched on the south-east coast, Gyeongju is one of the best places in South Korea to visit if you love history.

If Temples are your thing, head straight over to the Bulguksa Temple that dates all the way back to the 8th Century. That being said, you can also pop over to the Seokguram Grotto where you’ll find one monumental Buddha. It also has some incredible views over the city. Best of all, this is a great spot if you want to watch the sunrise. 

After exploring these temples and grotto, head straight over to Gyeongju National Museum which has a treasure-trove of history inside. Oh, but if museums aren’t your thing, pop along to (relatively close) Gyeongju National Park. The views and landscape are stunning. 

For a great bite to eat, head on over to Cheonnyeon Hanu Bomun who have some of the best Korean beef in the city. 

2.) Seoul

Seoul is easily up there as one of the best places in South Korea to visit. Not only is it super vast, but it’s also got a whole heap of history, neighbourhoods and influences that are so much fun to explore. 

Now, for about 600years, Seoul has been Korea’s capital city that is steeped in history. This all means that lots of important historical buildings are based here and is perfect to explore for a long weekend away. 

Once here, make sure to visit some of the main places to see in Seoul and spend some time exploring the dazzling neighbourhoods that are dotted across the city. After spending some time wandering, pop over to Changdeokgung Palace, head to Myeongdong for a huge shopping district and finally head to Bukchon Hanok Village. 

If you fancy some more temples and history, head straight over to Jogyesa Temple, the Bongeunsa Temple and the Gwanghwamun Gate. 

Oh, and if you fancy a tasty bite to eat, wander over to Jungsik for some proper yummy fine dining. Honestly, there are over 100,000 restaurants to Seoul so you’ll be spoilt for choice. 3.) Jeju City

Perched on Jejudo Island, Jeju City is one of the best places in South Korea to partner with a visit to the island, too. As South Korea’s most southerly city, it’s a popular spot with South Koreans, too.

Once you’re here, make sure to visit Dongmun Market, a traditional Korean Market selling everything you could ever imagine. If that’s not your thing, head over to Jejumok Gwana. Consisting of around seven historical houses, the former central government office dates all the way back to the 14th Century and is an incredible site to see. 

After a little city break, make sure to head across to Seongsan Ilchulbong, too. It’s the huge volcanic tuff that was created by Volcanic eruptions underwater. It’s so surreal to see.  

Based in the Gyeonggi Province, Suwon is one of the best places in South Korea to visit in the northwest of the county. 

Now, one of its most famous spots to see if the Fortress and the huge gates with towering pagodas. Also, not too far away is the palace of Hwaseong Haenggung which is easy to see after the fortress. Just make sure to not miss the incredible banquet room – it’s insane. 

If you fancy something a little more quirky, head to  Mr Toilet House . This is one of the world’s only toilet museums and easily one of the strangest and peculiar museums you’ll ever visit. Ha!

The museum itself is around 30-minutes from the city centre and is usually free to enter.  It’s filled with loads of statues and models of poop, toilets and all things bathroom related. 

To be honest, Busan is one of the best places in South Korea to visit due to its location. Perched on the south-east coast, it’s the perfect spot to visit if you want a little city life, but also embrace South Korea’s amazing beaches and mountains. 

Once you’re here, make sure to visit the vibrant (and busy) Haeundae Beach and take a trip to the 14th Century coastal temple of Haedong Yonggungsa. If beaches aren’t your thing, head on a trek (or in the car) to Taejongdae. It’s a massive coastal park that has some epic views across the region. Just make sure to take your hiking shoes, the routes can be a little tough. 

For a great place to stay in Busan, check into Solaria Nishitetsu which has one of the best locations in the city. 

6.) Hwaseong

Not too far away from Seoul, Hwaseong is one of the best places in South Korea to visit for a day trip. 

Once here, make sure to visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites like Hwaseong Fortress and head over to the Yongjusa Temple, too. If you’re something of a thrillseeker, head over to Everland and ride the massive wooden rollercoaster they have. 

Also, for a yummy Korean BBQ, head to Bonsuwon Galbi, their kalbi is so good. 

Nestled on the banks of the Geum River, Gunsan is a lovely South Korean city to visit for a few days exploring. Once you’re here, head over to Hirotsu House, see the Dongguksa Temple and explore the Modern History Museum (which is perfect on a rainy day). 

Oh, and don’t forget to head over to Seonyudo Island too. It’s attached by a long bridge and is well worth a visit to see the dramatic mountains and beaches. 

8.) Gwangju

Situated in the south corner of the country, Gwangju is one of the best places in South Korea to visit that has a cool mix of old and new.

Once here, make sure to visit the Jeungsimsa Temple with its stone pagoda, explore the Mudeungsan Mountain National Park and gorge at  Mahanji . They serve up one of the best Korean BBQs in the city. You’ll be so full, you’ll roll back to your bed. Just make sure to try their pork ribs… they’re so tasty. 

9.) Chuncheon

Perched in the northerly regions of the country, Chuncheon is a city that’s well worth visiting when travelling through the Gangwon Province.

Once you’ve arrived, make sure to spend some time visiting the ancient Cheongpyeongsa Temple and see the cherry blossoms (around Soyangho Lake) in spring. 

Also, if you want to see something a little different, head across to the International Mime Festival too. The festival takes place at the end of May and carries on until the 2nd of June. It’s well worth seeing the fire shows and music that make it so much fun! 

10.) Andong

Nestled on the Nakdong River, Andong is one of the best places in South Korea to visit if you love museums and history. 

Once you’re here, make sure to visit the Folk Museum which showcases local folklore and traditions from this region. Alternatively, head over to Hahoe Folk Village that serves up some traditional Korean dishes within historic buildings. 

Afterwards, pop into the Dosanseowon Confucian School, too. It’s a place that almost feels like time has stood still. If you’re taking public transport here, make sure to get bus number sixty-seven from the city itself. It’ll take around 30-minutes in total. 

11.) Daegu

Surrounded by mountains, Daegu is a clean and almost sparkly city to visit (if that makes sense?). Now, one of the most famous things about Daegu is the  Oriental Medicine Cultural Center but there’s so much more to it than this. 

Once here, make sure to chill out at Donghwasa. The grounds are stunning and it’s a great way to spend a sunny morning. Alternatively, head over to Apsan Park and follow the routes and trails around the area. 

For a local bite to eat, pop into Sangju Shikdang that serves up some tasty Korean dishes. Don’t expect anything fancy and you might not even get a menu, but the food is so good! 

12.) Gangneung

Nestled in the province of Gangwon-do, Gangneung is one of the best places in South Korea to visit if you want a full itinerary. I mean, there is so much to do! It’s the kind of city you can visit for a week and still not see or experience everything. 

Once you’ve arrived, make sure to explore Gyeongpo Beach, see Gangneung Seongyojang and enjoy the views from Gyeongpodae.

South Korea is crammed with gorgeous sites, from futuristic modern skyscrapers to ancient mountaintop temples. Whether you want to see Seoul's stylish cityscapes, Gangneung's top K-drama filming locations or Jeju Island's natural landscapes, we've got you covered. As part of Visit Korea Year, citizens from 22 countries can currently visit South Korea visa-free until December 2024, so now is a great time to add this Asian nation to your travel list. Let's take a look at South Korea's most dazzling sights.

Bukchon Hanok Village, Seoul

Wedged between the Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces, Bukchon Hanok Village is a quiet residential area filled with hundreds of hanoks (traditional Korean buildings), either dating from or styled to imitate the 14th century. The steep, narrow roads serve up sumptuous views across the city, especially with the hanoks in the foreground, tall apartment blocks behind them and N Seoul Tower in the distance.

Sodolbawi Rock, Gangneung

A two-hour bus or train ride from Seoul brings you to Gangneung, an east coast city nicknamed 'The Pine City' after the region's lush pine forests that drape the region in forest scent. Amid the unique formations of the coastal Sodol Adeul Rock Park stands Sodolbawi Rock, where legend holds that a couple once prayed for 100 days to conceive a son. Today it's more popular to clamber over the rocks and pools of clear water below to get a closer view of the strangely-shaped rocks sculpted by the wind and waves.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Busan

While many of Korea’s most impressive temples are tucked away in the mountains, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is found right by the sea. This Busan beauty was built in the 14th century and, though it's been restored and reconstructed over the years, it retains an elegant atmosphere. There are 108 steps lined with stone lanterns which guide you along the rocky shore, leading you to the temple's vibrantly-colored facades

Jinhae, Changwon

Jinhae, a district in Changwon City, is deep cherry blossom territory. The Jinhae Gunhangje Festival is held here every year (typically from the end of March into early April), during which hundreds of Yoshino cherry trees transform the area into the pastel-pink stuff of dreams. With its popularity come the crowds, although weekdays can be quieter. Gyeonghwa Station is one of the prettiest spots, where trains pass along the tracks beneath a canopy of blossom.

Sangsaeng’s Hand, Homigot

You’ll find this striking bronze sculpture in Homigot, on Korea's easternmost tip, and it’s no coincidence that this town marks the location of South Korea’s earliest first sunrise every year. Early morning is certainly the most captivating time to visit to see the hand silhouetted against the sun. The right hand (pictured) emerges from the ocean, while the left hand is installed on the beachfront.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul

Is this Seoul's coolest building? The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is one of Zaha Hadid's architectural masterpieces and is a prime example of the capital's slick, modern aesthetic. Its spaceship-like shape is split into five zones, which include ultra-modern markets, art halls and exhibition areas. Spacious walkways wrap through and around the building so you can admire its fluid curves from every angle. DDP also stands for 'dream, design and play'.

Songdo Central Park, Incheon

Incheon is best-known for its international airport – most likely your point of arrival into the country – but there's still a smattering of sights worth seeing here. The port city is steeped in maritime history but today there's a modern edge to the place; make a beeline for Songdo Central Park for views of epic skyscrapers reflected by a wide waterway.

Jumunjin Breakwater, Gangneung

Gangneung is a popular K-drama filming location. Head to Jumunjin Breakwater, pictured, to recreate the classic scene from Goblin  (if you know, you know) and spot a series of colorful lighthouses. A little way up the road you’ll find the famous BTS Bus Stop, where the K-pop superband BTS shot their You Never Walk Alone album cover.

Jaman Mural Village, Jeonju

Situated on a steep hill, Jaman Mural Village has oodles of quirky charm. You'll weave through winding roads and see murals depicting scenes from popular anime movies like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro , as well as a few western additions like The Beatles and The Wizard of Oz . This colorful, unique area is filled with cute cafés, and it’s not far from the Jeonju Hanok Village, where you can head afterwards for a more traditional vibe.

Bukhansan National Park, Seoul

Bukhansan National Park is well worth an early start; not just to avoid the crowds but, depending on when you visit, the heat of the midday sun too. Located on the outskirts of Seoul, it's one of the most visited national parks in the world and by far Korea's most popular hiking hotspot. The park boasts many different forms of beauty: think huge white-granite rocks piercing the pine forest canopy, crystal-clear streams tinkling through sheer gorges and hundreds of ancient Buddhist temples scattered across the landscape.

Woljeonggyo Bridge, Gyeongju

A reconstruction of a 7th-century original and the largest wooden bridge in South Korea, Woljeonggyo Bridge is beautiful both inside and out. Red columns flank a wooden walkway which is topped with a low-sloping tiled roof. The covered bridge looks even more breathtaking at night, when it lights up and doubles its beauty with a reflection on the clear water's surface below.

The Garden of Morning Calm, Gapyeong

With over 5,000 plants and 20 themed areas connected by walkways, the Garden of Morning Calm is a horticulturalist's dream. The Sunken Garden is shaped like the Korean peninsula, and features flowers representing a hopeful reunification between North and South Korea. Set amid a towering pine forest, it’s an attractive place to linger, while all four seasons offer something different. Look for the bright-yellow adonis flowers blooming in spring, or enjoy themed light festivals during the winter.

Hahoe Folk Village, Andong

Described as ‘the most Korean town in Korea’, Hahoe is steeped in nostalgic charm. Its most famous and captivating place to visit is Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that brilliantly showcases the culture and aesthetic of the 15th-century early Joseon Dynasty. It's home to members of the Ryu family, who have lived there for 600 years. Check out the well-preserved tile-roofed and thatched houses, and don’t miss the enthralling mask dance performances (pictured) either.

Ojukheon House, Gangneung

Ojukheon House is one of the oldest wooden residential buildings in the entire country. Today the complex operates more like a traditional open-air museum with well-tended gardens, and visitors can roam around the grounds. The Gangneung landmark was once the residence of a prominent 16th-century artist, Sin, and her scholar son, Yi, who feature on the 50,000 and 5,000 Korean won notes.

Boseong County

Producing nearly half of South Korea’s green tea, Boseong County’s well-tended fields are seemingly endless. The tiered tea plantations snake up and down the hilly terrain, so wander the ridges and valleys or stop off at a hilltop café to soak up the views with a cup of the good stuff. The best time to visit is in May, when the tea is harvested and the Boseong Aromatic Tea Festival takes place, when visitors can try their hand at picking, making and sampling the county's crop.

Pocheon Art Valley, Pocheon

This former rock quarry lay abandoned for decades until the 1990s, when it was finally given a new lease of life as the Pocheon Art Valley. You can still soak up the breathtaking natural beauty of Cheonjoho Lake (pictured) from the observation café and sky park, but it’s now home to an arts and culture complex too. A common date spot, the site boasts an outdoor sculpture park and a performance space nestled under the quarry cliffs, as well as an astronomy museum popular with families with children.

Hallasan Mountain, Jeju Island

Stunning summits await at Hallasan Mountain, which sits at the center of Jeju Island. Also called Yeongjusan (meaning ‘mountain high enough to pull the galaxy’), this national geopark proudly takes the title of South Korea’s tallest mountain at almost 6,400 feet (1,950m) above sea level. It's home to 1,800 types of plant and 4,000 species of animal, and is topped with a famous crater lake. Immerse yourself in the mountain’s enchanting environment on the Seongpanak (6 miles/9.6km) or Gwaneumsa (5.4 miles/8.7km) trails. The trails are well-maintained, but, as with all mountains, research your route thoroughly before attempting.

Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju

Nestled in a forest beside the southern city of Gyeongju, the 8th-century Bulguksa Temple is a fascinating slice of Korean history and culture set in peaceful, natural surroundings. The Buddhist temple complex is split into three areas, where wooden buildings rest on raised stone terraces. From here there’s a short one-mile (2km) trail to the remote Seokguram Grotto, where you'll be awed by a huge Buddha statue. Together, the two attractions make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Arte Museum, Gangneung

The breathtaking Arte Museum is the country’s largest immersive media art exhibition and makes a perfect rainy day activity. Using a combination of light, sound and scent, the floor-to-ceiling installations (which reach 32 feet/10m high) immerse you in blossoming seasons, swirling tides, iconic European artworks and more. The company behind the installation recently made headlines with their public artwork 'WAVE', which featured an astonishingly realistic-looking wave crashing around what appeared to be a large glass box.

Hamdeok Beach, Jeju Island

Take a stroll along Hamdeok Beach and see for yourself why it's one of Jeju Island’s best-loved beauty spots. With its blend of pure-white sand, jet-black rock and emerald-blue sea, it’s a dreamy place to spend an afternoon. Go paddling in a rock pool, wander out along a sandbar or hike up the small hillside of terraced fields. Keen for even better views? You can also go paragliding here.

Seoraksan National Park, Gangwon

Spanning a large swath of Gangwon Province, Seoraksan was South Korea's first ever designated nature reserve in 1965, and offers invigorating trails through scenic spots like Biryong Falls, Ulsan Peak and Geumganggul Cave. Staircases stretch up giant rock formations that pierce the sky, while the park is awash with color all-year-round: think vibrant blossoms in the spring and crimson-red foliage come fall. Pictured is Dinosaur Ridge, a jagged ridge of rock said to resemble the back of a dinosaur rising from the earth.

Changdeokgung Palace, Seoul

Seoul boasts several pretty palaces but Changdeokgung is perhaps the most beautiful. The 15th-century palace complex encompasses the sprawling Secret Garden; you can only visit as part of a guided tour, but it really is a must-see. As your guide leads you past traditional pavilions, lilypad-filled ponds and a canopy of foliage, you can soak up the yesteryear atmosphere in blissfully tranquil surroundings.

Jagalchi Market, Busan

You might not expect a seafood market to be 'beautiful' exactly, but Busan's Jagalchi Market is a sight to behold. This is South Korea's largest seafood market with indoor and outdoor stalls selling live and dried offerings: think scallops, snow crabs, octopus and plenty more. Plus, there's a pleasant atmosphere with friendly servers (called 'Jagalchi ajumma', meaning middle-aged or married Korean women) and a smattering of street performers.

Cheonjiyeon Falls, Jeju Island

This 72-foot (22m) waterfall sounds as incredible as it looks. The stream thunders down into the pool below, where some claim the reflection of the rock resembles a face. Cheonjiyeon Falls (which translates as 'sky connected with land') is set amid a network of walking trails, with plenty of other scenery to admire. The valley stretching from the falls is also famous for its population of giant mottled eels – carnivorous fish that can grow up to six-and-a-half feet (2m) long.

Bomun Lake, Gyeongju

This man-made lake is a stunning scenic spot in Gyeongju, in the southeast of the country. There's a four-mile (7km) walking trail which loops around the lake and takes around two hours to complete at a leisurely pace. There are plenty of pretty bridges and small parks, plus a steady stream of picnic benches to pause at. For the full experience, take to the water on a swan-shaped pedal boat.

Oedo-Botania, Geoje

This botanical garden is set on a reclaimed rocky islet in Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park, off the southeast coast of Geojedo Island. What started as a private garden now envelops the entire island, where European-styled gardens are punctuated with sculptures and statues. You can only reach Oedo-Botania by ferry and there’s no accommodation, which adds to its sense of escapist tranquility. Incredibly, dinosaur footprints have previously been found here.

Gyeongui Line Forest Park, Seoul

A slice of respite in South Korea's liveliest city, the  Gyeongui Line Forest Park  is one of Seoul's most beautiful spots. This four-mile (6km) linear walking trail partly tracks a former railway line that trundled through Book Street, where you’ll spot bronze statues commemorating its heritage. Urban life hums behind the tree-lined paths as you soak up the greenery, trickling streams and overall chilled-out ambience. The line passes by the bustling Dongjin Market, and the trendy, bohemian neighborhoods of Hongdae and Waugyo.

Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon

Looking as much like a majestic roundabout as a citadel, the Hwaseong Fortress is still a striking sight centuries on. The piled-stone and brick fortress was built in the late 18th century with huge stone towers, bunkers, bastions, secret gates and enormous 3.7-mile-long (6km) city walls that rip through the region's uneven terrain. There’s plenty of good viewpoints over the city and its fortifications, like the photogenic Paldalmun Gate (pictured). The fortress was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The three scents of Gangneung

It might sound strange, but follow your nose for Gangneung’s most beautiful sights. The city is famous for its three scents – coffee, pine forest and ocean breeze – and Anmok's coffee streets, the pine forest campsites on one side of the city and the endless beaches on the other perfectly showcase Gangneung's best bits. You can combine all three with a stay at  St John’s Hotel ; from your balcony, sip a cup of coffee while overlooking the forests below and the endless ocean views ahead.

Gamcheon Culture Village, Busan

Set in the foothills of a coastal mountain, the colorful Gamcheon Culture Village is one of South Korea's most vibrant attractions and makes an excellent screensaver. The residential area was given a massive makeover in 2009 and now its higgledy-piggledy houses and labyrinthine streets sparkle in the midday sun. It’s been dubbed 'the Machu Picchu of Busan', although expect more murals and street art than alpacas...

11 Cheap Places to Travel on the US Dollar

It’s never been easier to travel with almost no money . While post-COVID “revenge travel” has driven up prices in the short term, those are already starting to drop back down to pre-pandemic levels. And, with the spread of the sharing economy, plentiful cheap flights , and access to budget accommodation, getting away has never been more affordable.

If you’re an American, the strong dollar has made many places very cheap (or at least cheaper) to visit. While that’s not great for other folks, it is good for us Americans, as we’re getting the best exchange rates we’ve had in years. And although absolute prices are up, you’re still getting a ton of value right now.

While there are lots of great destination options, I wanted to list a few of my favorites. These are places I think are the most interesting, fun, and easy to get to, and offer excellent value for your money.

Costa Rica is my favorite Central American country. Though it’s one of the most expensive in the region, your money will still go far here. It also strikes a balance between budget-friendly and safe , while still offering plenty of amazing sights and activities.

In this magical place, there is a ton to see and do . You’ll find cloud forests, endangered turtles, incredible surfing, towering volcanos, epic white-water rafting , fantastic nature preserves, deep-sea diving, and some of the happiest and nicest people around.

And on the budget travel side, you’ll only need about $50 USD per day, if you use hostels and buses and cook your own food; you’ll also be able to do a few budget activities, like snorkeling or hiking trips. As a bonus, flights from the US are also very cheap. If you’re flexible, you can find round-trip flights for under $250 USD.

On a mid-range budget of $125 USD per day, you can stay in an Airbnb, eat out for all your meals, take the occasional taxi to get around, enjoy more nights out, and do more paid activities (like guided tours, surf lessons, and museum visits). In short, you won’t want for anything on this budget.

Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries in an already budget-friendly region. If you budgeted $25-30 USD per day, you would want for little. Hostels are just a few bucks a day, and you can get delicious street food for as little as $1 USD. (You can visit the country comfortably quite comfortably for $50-75 USD per day if you’re looking for more luxury.)

Be sure to spend some time in the hectic capital of Hanoi , and visit HaLong Bay when you’re in the north.

In the south, don’t miss the Chu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City (tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the war with the US). They offer an eye-opening look at the conflict.

For some adventurous activities, like canyoning and cliff jumping, head to Da Lat. If you’re looking for beaches, Nha Trang and Mui Ne should be at the top of your list!

Not only is Romania an underrated destination in Europe , but it’s also a budget-friendly one. Bucharest is a modern, up-and-coming capital, and the entire Transylvania region is breathtaking. Brasov, my favorite city there, offers lots of history ( including the infamous Bran Castle, known as “Dracula’s Castle” ). Transportation is cheap, and both ridesharing and hitchhiking are common. It’s a huge country, too so you can easily spend a few weeks and still just scratch the surface. In fact, I love it so much that I used to run tours there!

Backpackers can comfortably enjoy their time here for as little as $35-40 USD per day, which is a steal in Europe. And if you want to splurge and stay in hotels, eat out more, and enjoy a few drinks, you can easily do that for under $100 USD per day (or less).

Now that Romania is a (partially) part of the Schengen Area and there are no border checks via sea or air, I suspect the country will become more popular. That means more people and higher prices, so don’t wait to visit!

While India has always been a cheap country, with the US dollar doing so well, it’s even cheaper! You can get by on as little as $25-30 USD per day — often less! Mouthwatering meals can be found for under $2 USD, and accommodation is just $5-10 USD per night, depending on where you are.

Even if you go for mid-range accommodation and food, you’ll be hard-pressed to spend more than $50 USD per day unless you’re staying at fancy resorts — and even they are quite affordable! While flights to India can be expensive, once you arrive, everything is a bargain.

Be sure not to miss the epic Taj Mahal , the laid-back beaches of Goa, the holy city of Varanasi , and sweeping metropolises like New Delhi and Mumbai.

Argentina is brimming with history, culture, wine, football, and outdoor wonders like Patagonia . It’s one of my favorite countries in South America. Its capital, Buenos Aires, is considered one of the liveliest cities in the world. (Most people speak English, which makes it easier to get around.) I’ve never drunk so much wine or eaten as much steak as I did here (which blew my budget, but it was worth it!).

The only problem is the rampant inflation, so prices are always in flux (especially now that their current leader is making some sweeping changes). But even with that, you can still get by on around $40-50 USD per day by staying in hostels and sticking to cheap and free activities like museum visits, hiking, and free walking tours.

Patagonia is the main draw here, offering stunning landscapes and world-class hiking. Nature lovers will also want to visit Iguazú Falls , the largest waterfall system in the world! And while guided hikes cost upwards of $450 USD for a multiday trek, that’s still super cheap considering it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’m not a big hiker or camper but even I thought it was amazing!

Safaris, wineries, mountains, and an endless coastline that is perfect for road trips. That’s South Africa. As a backpacker or budget traveler, this country is an amazing destination to visit as there are a lot of work opportunities as well as plenty of adventurous activities (and some great hiking) to keep you busy.

While it’s true that South Africa struggles with corruption and petty crime , it has a booming tourism industry and a growing backpacker and digital nomad scene. It’s an amazing place to road trip too.

With $50-60 USD per day, you’ll be able to enjoy the amazing beaches and laid-back lifestyle that makes South Africa so appealing. While there are definitely cheaper places on the continent, you’ll get a lot of value here.

Don’t miss hiking up Table Mountain or visiting the penguins when you’re in Cape Town . And if you’re looking for a world-class safari experience, head to Kruger National Park!

Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the world. The people are so incredibly welcoming, and even after a long absence between visits , I still found it to be one of the best destinations in Southeast Asia: affordable, friendly, and safe.

Prices have increased a little over the years, but not by much (it’s still cheaper than Thailand). Backpackers can easily get by for $45-50 USD or less per day. Street food is cheap and delicious (Phnom Penh is an amazing foodie city), and hostels cost under $10 USD per night. You can travel across much of the country via bus for $20 USD too.

Plus, Angkor Wat is one of the most amazing historical sites in the world. It’s $37 USD to enter, but it’s a Wonder of the World and should not be skipped (a three-day pas is $62 USD, and I do suggest spending more than one day here).

Be sure to  also visit the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh for a sobering look at the country’s violent past. It’s heavy but necessary.

I don’t know why most people don’t talk about it, but if you want a cheap East Asian country with stunning countryside, South Korea is it. The country offers a lot of value!

When I went to South Korea a few years ago, I was stunned by how cheap everything was. Sure, it’s not as inexpensive as Southeast Asia , but compared to Japan or Europe, it’s quite affordable. With the South Korean won  at 1,309 KRW per USD and most everything costing only a few thousand won , I can’t imagine busting your budget here (unless you’re a huge foodie, because the cuisine here is delicious).

You can pick up bottles of beer at 7-11 for a couple of dollars. Hostels in Seoul start around $16 USD per night (hotel rooms start at $25 USD per night). Backpackers can get by for only $60-75 USD here.

Be sure to indulge in Seoul’s culinary scene while you’re here, and visit the Gyeongbukgung Palace (it’s the most stunning royal palace in Seoul). For a more luxurious getaway, head to Jeju Island for beaches and some fun in the sun. And if you want to learn about the country’s temultuous relationship with North Korea, take a guided tour of the DMZ .

I confess, I was late to the party on Mexico . While I had visited some of the touristy areas, it wasn’t until recently that I finally explored beyond the resorts. And I loved every minute.

Mexico City is a world-class metropolis with amazing food and nightlife, Oaxaca has incredible historic sites and an abundance of delicious eateries (and all the mezcal you can drink), and the Yucatán Peninsula is perfect for road trips and swimming in secluded cenotes (sinkholes).

While the country gets a bad rap in the US (thanks to overzealous media coverage), it’s actually much safer (and cheaper) than people think. Travelers can get by on as little as $50 USD per day ($100-120 USD if you want hotels and not hostels), and flights from the US are often just $200 USD round-trip.

In short, it’s a great option for US travelers who are short on time but still want to explore somewhere fun, sunny, and cheap.

In years past, the British pound (GBP) has been worth up to double the US dollar. That’s not the case anymore. Still struggling post-Brexit, it’s now worth just 20-30% more than the dollar. So, while the UK isn’t exactly a cheap place to visit, the weakened pound and strong dollar mean that now you’ll get a lot more value compared to years past. Backpackers can get around for as little as $75 USD per day by sticking to hostels, free museums, and cheap pub food. There’s tons of free things to do in London so you don’t have to break the bank here.

If you do want to splash out, skip-the-line tickets of the Tower of London are a must.

A strong US dollar makes traveling the world much cheaper than it would be otherwise — especially if you want to head to Europe and visit some “traditionally expensive” destinations. And while a strong dollar doesn’t mean “free,” it can definitely help you travel longer or in more luxury.

A guide to the best street food in South Korea

In South Korea , you are never far from delicious street food to satisfy your cravings. Skewers of tangy chargrilled chicken, crispy fried veggies and golden fish-shaped waffles with a sweet surprise filling can make for a full meal.

Eat Korean-style – not walking but rubbing shoulders with locals around stalls or in cozy pojangmacha (tented street restaurants) with a cup of soju (a distilled spirit). It’s an easy way to see and taste-test some Korean flavors.

Here are some of the most popular foods to sink your teeth into on the streets of South Korea.

Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes)

If you dislike spice, look away now. Tteokbokki are rice cakes in a bright red-orange sauce that’s a mix of water, soy sauce, sugar, red chili flakes and gochujang, a paste made from fermented soybeans and red chilis that is used extensively in Korean dishes, most famously in bibimbap (rice with cooked vegetables). Well into the night, just about anywhere Koreans congregate for work, school or socializing, you will find street stalls and pojangmacha stewing oblong pans of tteok (rice cakes that resemble overblown penne pasta) in the bubbling sauce.

A mild version of tteokbokki used to be just for the royal court to eat, but now even partygoers stop on the street to fill up on the chewy rice cakes. They don’t have much flavor and almost demand the spicy and sweet sauce. Dressed-up tteokbokki variations add slices of fish cake, boiled eggs, ramyeon (ramen noodles) and other ingredients. The best place to try this is Sindang Tteokbokki Town, a collection of tteokbokki eateries in Seoul’s Sindang neighborhood, where the modern version of the dish was pioneered and popularized.

For a quick and convenient version, try tteokkochi , where the rice cakes are threaded onto a skewer.

Soondae (Korean sausage)

Soondae is one of Korea’s most popular street foods, and you’ll find it at just about every street stall and pojangmacha . But don’t think bratwurst or salami – soondae is a blood sausage that’s made from cow or pig intestine stuffed with pork blood and some combination of glass noodles, glutinous rice and vegetables.

These soft, chewy sausages are steamed, sliced and usually served with pieces of liver and lung. In Seoul, you’ll get a mix of salt, chili powder, sesame seeds and MSG to dip the sausage in, while in other regions vendors might give you a vinegar-gochujang mix or a soybean-based sauce. Lots of street eaters take a combo approach, ordering tteokbokki and soondae together and dipping their sausage in the spicy tteokbokki sauce.

If you go to Gangwon-do Province, make sure you try ojingeo soondae , which uses cooked squid instead of intestines to hold the filling.

Gimbap (rice and nori rolls)

It looks like a sushi roll, but this is gimbap : dressier, with a dried seaweed ( gim ) wrap and bursting with flavor you can see. The rice ( bap ) and seaweed are lightly flavored with sesame oil, and the rolls are given a kick with a side of kimchi. Fillings often include canned tuna or beef, spinach, carrot, imitation crab, pickled radish, egg and herbaceous Korean perilla leaf (similar to shiso).

Gimbap comes in both hefty rice-filled slices, which make for speedy hunger busters, and mouthwatering petite rolls with fewer ingredients. The smaller rolls are ubiquitous at street stalls and markets, while the larger versions are staples of the simple lunch and snack shops known as bunsik , such as the Gimbap Cheongook (Gimbap Heaven) chain. Packaged versions can also be found in convenience stores all over the country.

Dak gangjeong (seasoned fried chicken pieces)

Dak gangjeong  is something of a fusion food. But what a fusion! Tender chicken pieces are coated with a sweet and spicy sauce and then sprinkled with sesame seeds and peanuts. The boneless bite-sized pieces are usually double fried, giving them a distinctive crackle. A small box is a great way to satisfy a craving. Some stalls will even offer a version sprinkled with parmesan cheese for maximum fusion.

Twigim (Korean-style tempura)

Koreans don’t tiptoe around frying their street food. Twigim are various great-tasting ingredients fried in a batter (think Japanese tempura but more substantial): succulent squid, a hash of vegetables, sweet potatoes and even boiled eggs. You will be hard-pressed to find twigim outside of Korea, so fill up.

At many street markets, you’ll come across sit-down twigim restaurants, where you use tongs to pick up the pieces you want from a buffet-style spread and place them in a basket. Pay for all of them at the cashier, and then the staff will take your basket, fry up your selection and bring your golden plate to your table. An especially good place to try twigim  is Gongdeok Market in Seoul.

Mandu (dumplings)

Mandu come deliciously fried, steamed or boiled. As a street snack, the most likely choice is kimchi mandu , filled with green onion, ground pork and a lot of spicy kimchi that you can see shimmering orange through the soft skin. Kogi mandu are stuffed with gingery ground pork and green onions. These pockets of flavor are warm and delicious, but sometimes spicy enough to warrant a warning from the chef. Dumplings are typically served six or seven to a plate. Dip them in soy sauce and vinegar and chow down.

Jjinppang mandu are soft fluffy buns filled with pork, tofu, green onions and garlic. Buns just called jjinppang are a sweet version, filled with red bean paste.

Myeon (noodles)

Bowls of myeon soup might not sound like street food, but in fast-moving Korea, everything is ready for a quick meal between meals. Keep warm and satisfied in the winter by popping into a pojangmacha for a bowl of udon or janchi guksu (banquet noodles), a deeply comforting dish of thin noodles in an anchovy-based broth.

Bungeoppang and gukhwa-ppang (red bean waffles)

In any town in Korea, you'll find cute fish-shaped sweet cakes on the streets. These bungeoppang have a golden brown, waffle-like exterior that is both soft and crispy to bite into, giving way to hot sweet red bean paste. Today, many vendors also offer versions filled with things like cream or Nutella. What bungeoppang don't contain is any actual fish.

You’ll find street vendors near schools and subway stations pouring kettles of batter into molds of other shapes, too, such as chrysanthemum flowers to make gukhwa-ppang , which are also filled with red bean paste but tend to be less crispy than bungeoppang .

Hotteok (Korean doughnuts)

Hotteok are sometimes called Korean doughnuts, but they’re more like pancakes with a sweet, caramelly filling. The theater of watching vendors press the balls of dough into disks and fry them until they’re golden brown is half the pleasure. Before frying them, vendors make a hole in the dough and fill it with a mixture of cinnamon, brown sugar and peanuts, which turns into a grainy caramel as the dough fries.

It’s hot stuff and burns when you inevitably can’t wait to bite into the hefty, fragrant pancake oozing with the delicious fillings. A version called ssiat hotteok includes black sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. It’s a Busan specialty. Both versions are a sweet tooth’s dream.

Gyeranppang (egg muffins)

Literally "egg bread," gyeranppang is an oblong golden muffin with a moist whole egg baked on top. It’s sometimes finished off with a dusting of parsley. You might have a hard time finding these in the summer, but once the weather cools, stalls selling gyeranppang start appearing with increasing frequency. To try the snack in its birthplace, make a pilgrimage to the port city of Incheon. Dense and comforting, savory and sweet, it's a road to addiction.

Kkochi (skewers)

Korean street vendors know that putting anything on a skewer makes street food easier to handle.

The most common type of skewer is dak-kkochi : grilled chicken and green onion skewers that hum with a smoky charred flavor under a sticky tangy barbecue sauce. Another popular snack is sotteok sotteok , which are like kebabs of mini sausages and rice cakes. If you ever wanted to eat potato chips on a stick, try hway-ori gamja (tornado potato), a potato cut into one long swirl, skewered and fried.

Odeng/Eomuk (fishcake)

Odeng are hot, easy-to-eat fishcakes typically served on a skewer. If you are spice-shy, odeng is your street-eat savior. It’s soft, smooth and only mildly fishy. The fishcake is either shaped like a hot dog or flat and folded over, and the skewers jut out from steaming vats of seafood, green onion and sometimes chili-infused broth that people sip on as they eat. It’s popular in winter, and many Koreans drink the soup alongside soju to temper the alcohol’s fire.

Odeng is self-serve. Just ladle the satisfying broth into one of the paper cups on offer and help yourself to the skewers. You'll usually find either a dish of soy sauce that you can brush onto your odeng or a spray bottle of the stuff that you can spritz on your skewer. The stall keeper counts up the sticks when you’re done. In larger places, you’ll find different colored skewers that correspond to different prices.

Hot bar (fish-cake bar)

Hot bar is a skewer of fish-cake paste that’s been mixed with ingredients like carrot, chili pepper and other ingredients and then deep-fried. More elaborate versions have hot dogs, imitation crab or cheese inside. A perilla leaf is often wrapped around the bar to add extra flavor. Hot bars are a fast-food cross between the fried snacks of twigim and odeng .

In Korea, this isn’t a hot dog in a bun with mustard and ketchup, but a corn dog (battered sausage). Vendors will offer squirts of ketchup, mustard and chili sauce and sometimes even a sprinkling of sugar. If you want to take things to the next level, try a gamja dog, a sausage fried in batter with a crust of French fries (yes, really). It's the kind of fun food that reminds you of being at a fairground.
