Hays Travel opens latest branch in Sunderland City Centre following Thomas Cook takeover

The ex-Thomas Cook shop in The Bridges Shopping Centre is one of the first to re-open as Hays Travel

One of the new branches of Hays Travel which has opened in a former Thomas Cook unit has special significance to its new owners.

Among the 555 units taken over by Hays Travel is the shop at Sunderland ’s Bridges Shopping Centre, which is now ready for business.

And for the company this opening will be particularly happy, as it’s in the city where Hays Travel started its business – and where it has its headquarters.

When Thomas Cook went into administration in late September, it was a huge blow for the travel industry, leaving thousands of people out of work and numerous holidaymakers without their vacations.

But now thanks to the intervention of Hays Travel scores of branches have already opened their doors – with more than 1,500 former Thomas Cook employees back in work.

The new Hays Travel in The Bridges is now welcoming customers, having created four jobs initially, including two previous Thomas Cook staff members who were based at the store.

Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, said it was fantastic news not just for the city, but for the country as a whole.

“It’s brilliant news for former Thomas Cook stores up and down the UK, but it’s particularly brilliant for Sunderland because Hays Travel is such a huge part of the local economy,” he said.

“It’s a massive Sunderland success story which has been – deservedly – recognised across the country for saving jobs and supporting the high street.

“Given its track record, there’s no doubt at all that Hays Travel will continue to flourish and we are delighted that we are able to welcome them into the Bridges.”

Jane Schumm, retail and training director at Hays Travel, added: “We’re absolutely delighted that the ex-Thomas Cook shop at The Bridges is one of the first to re-open as Hays Travel. Sunderland shops will always be extra special for us.

“We now have 138 ex-Thomas Cook shops open across the UK and 1,930 new staff on the books – the fact that we are already welcoming customers back into shops, starting to rebrand and booking our first holidays is a tribute to our great people who have stopped at nothing to make this happen.”

Lauren Davies OUTSTANDING. I will not be going to another travel agent or dealing with another person for as long as Lauren is working at Hayes, as she has given me top class service, continuously looked for months for the flights to be released for New York and has kept me up to date every step of the way. She got me a deal I could not refuse, half the price of competitors. Most importantly her customer service, warm, friendly and polite manner was the best. Went into Hays at the Bridges and we weren’t sure where wanted to go. We sat down with Lauren and gave her three very different suggestions. Last minute deal not best price

The girl in the shop(destiny) was great and very informative but unfortunately the IT system was not working and non of the paper work was printed off,all she was able to do was e-mail me the ATOL certificate. Also a bit disappointed as when a got home and went on line I could have got the holiday cheaper from jet2 on line. This holiday was in the shop window as a last minute deal and that the price would not be beaten.

10/10 service

We called in on the off chance as TUI didn't open until 09:30hrs. We'd already found the holiday we wanted and Hays Travel were able to price match. The agent (Lauren Davies) was very welcoming, knowledgeable and gave us a quick turnaround which is what we needed after night shift. 10/10 couldn't fault the service we received.

The service and experience I received by Lauren and her colleague Destinea, along with other members of the staff within the Sunderland bridges branch, was absolutely fantastic. Great experience.

We spoke to Lauren who helped us narrow down our search as we were quite unsure what we wanted. She was patient and enthusiastic about the places we looked at. We went in just to look but as she made it so easy with her knowledge of areas and enthusiastic approach we found ourselves the ideal place for us and booked. We tried a different travel agent who we felt just wanted us out the shop as we were just looking and they were more dismissive just saying I will email anything that comes up from areas we have mentioned. As yet no emails 2 weeks later So glad we popped into Hays... just to have a look... keep up the good work Lauren. Easy to talk to friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. Thanks again for a great experience booking our holiday.
