Product Overview

H4350 is an extruded propellant in our Extreme series that has been one of our most popular powders with shooters for decades. During that time, Hodgdon has modernized H4350 by shortening the grains for improved metering and making it insensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

H4350 is ideal in the WSM family of calibers (270, 7mm, 30, 325) and is also the standard in such cartridges as the 243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, 270 Winchester, 338 Winchester Magnum and many more. For magnums with light- to moderate-weight bullets, it can't be beat!

Made in Australia.

Available in 1 lb. and 8 lb. containers.

This is one of my favorite powders. Fills the case and shoots very consistant pressures.

I use this powder for my 6x47 Lapua. It is the recommended powder and works awesome.

This is an outstanding product many of you whom use it know just how great it is. No other powder even comes close to getting my sub moas onas.close at any distance rather.it be a short 100 yd group or 600 -700 yd group. Where I'm from we don't have any 1000 yd ranges so I cannot vouch for those distance BUT for our ranges this powder for my rifle is far superior to another powder.

Great powder! Finally able to purchase again after long dry spell. Too bad no 8lb kegs

My powder of choice for 30-06 and 243 Win. Consistent from shot to shot, MOA accuracy @ 200+

Excellent powder

I’ve used H4350 for years and it’s consistent and stable powdered. I use it in my 6.5 creed and 6 GT and find it always delivers!

After being told Hodgdon H4350 would be the best option for reloading my 6.5 creedmoor rounds I had to see what worked the best for the best over all cost effectiveness in today's economy. I've tried 4 different powder types for the grain load I'm using and hands down hodgdon has gotten me the most consistent and the tightest shot groups of everything I've tried so far! Highly recommended

With all the new powders coming out, H4350 is still on top for my loads.

I tried quite a few powders 8133 and H1000 and 7828 and the 4350 speed powders worked the best for me and my barrel with 250gr. bullets. The barrel is a Proof Research Sendero contour 26" long. I personally think a good crono is a must when working up a load for the simple reason with the H-4350 I hit max load velocities with starting load charges. Which tells me the cut rifled proof is a way tighter bore that the test barrel Hodgdon used. Better safe than sorry I say Use a crono and know for sure whats going on and then work on the ES and SD. I tried AA4350 and IMR4350 and H4350 was by far the best results.

About Hodgdon H4530

h4350 safari outdoor

From the H4350 product page:

H4350 is an extruded propellant in our Extreme series that has been one of our most popular powders with shooters for decades. During that time, Hodgdon has modernized H4350 by shortening the grains for improved metering and making it insensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

H4350 is ideal in the WSM family of calibers (270, 7mm, 30, 325) and is also the standard in such cartridges as the 243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, 270 Winchester, 338 Winchester Magnum and many more. For magnums with light- to moderate-weight bullets, it can’t be beat!

Available in 1 lb. and 8 lb. containers.

Hodgdon H4350 falls into the medium-slow burn rate category, similar to IMR 4350 and IMR 4451.

h4350 safari outdoor

When choosing a burn rate, you should consider the cartridge, bullet weight, and desired velocity. H4350 is versatile— it has a great burn rate for a wide variety of cartridges. Here at Ultimate Reloader we have seen excellent results with the following:

  • 375 H&H
  • 6.5 Creedmoor
  • 6mm Remington
  • 6mm Creedmoor

Density Comparison

Just like when Gavin tested Winchester StaBALL 6.5 and Varget, we performed some “informal” density calculations for H4350. This was a casual test. We poured 200ml of H4350 into a measuring cup on a non-precision scale. (Our precision scales don’t handle this kind of weight).

Here are the results:

Hodgdon Granule Characteristics

H4350 is a short stick powder. When viewed under a microscope, it looks similar to other short stick powders like Hodgdon’s Varget. Common today, these short stick powders make it easier to accurately dispense powder charges from common mechanical measures. Though Hodgdon’s H4350 has been around for a long time, like many other things, it’s been modernized. One of these improvements was shortening the grains for improved metering.

Using the scale, the approximate dimensions for the powders (diameter or length as shown above):

Performance Results

H4350 has performed superbly in my 30-06 hunting loads. Loading a 165 grain Nosler over 59 grains of H4350, I achieved 2,940 fps with a  standard deviation of 9. This load doesn’t just look good on paper, but has proven itself in the field on elk, bear, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope. It is easily accurate out to 350 yard shots and beyond, depending, of course, on the skill of the shooter.

h4350 safari outdoor

Here’s a summary of some loads that Gavin and I have used with H-4350:

h4350 safari outdoor

H-4350 has also performed with heavier bullet weights – 180 and 200 grain 30-06 bullets.

The 25-06 shines with a charge of around 53 grains of H4350 and a 100 grain bullet. This combination reached 3,309 fps when I tested a 100 grain Barnes TSX bullet with a 53.5 grain charge.

H4350 in a 6mm Remington can send projectiles approximately 3,100 fps with a 95 or 100 grain bullet.

The much newer 6mm Creedmoor mustered just over 3,000 fps with the Hornady 108 grain ELD-Match bullet and H4350 as well as provided superb accuracy.

For folks who like bigger rifles, I’ve used a charge of 75 grains H4350 with several different 300 grain bullets for my 375 H&H. All of the loads developed a bit over 2,500 fps. As a side note, I switch to magnum rifle primers with that large of a powder charge.

Highlight: 25 Creedmoor

Gavin has shown great results with H-4350 for multiple Creedmoor cartridges, including 25 Creedmoor!

For this  25 Creedmoor load, Gavin took data from Blackjack Bullets ( here shooting the 131 ACE ), and worked up a series of 3-shot OCW string based on the following components:

h4350 safari outdoor

As seen in the picture above:

  • Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor Small Rifle Primer cases
  • Blackjack 131 grain ACE 25 caliber bullets
  • Federal Small Rifle primers
  • Hodgdon H-4350 powder

As you can see in the image showing the target above, this load was quite a performer!

H4350 has treated me well over the years — mostly in my hunting rifles. I’ve since added the 6mm Creedmoor to the list. This powder remains highly regarded by both target shooters and hunters looking for a high performance, versatile, and temperature insensitive powder.

Your review of H4350 was interesting, but frustrating, too. I can’t find H4350 anywhere, locally or on-line. I checked Midsouth again as you suggest: “out of stock – no backorders” on H4350.

So Gavin, you have 16 lbs. I’ll buy 8 from you. Name your price.

Powder Recomendation for 30-06

h4350 safari outdoor

  • Add to quote

I put my new Rifle on lay a way tonight, it is a Mossberg Patriot with a 22 inch barrel a 1:10 twist. I will be shooting Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain factory loads through it first. But want to start working up loads for it. I will be using Hornady 150grain Interlock BTSP bullets in my reloads with SB primers. Cases all once fired Mil Surp Brass. Hornady recommends H4350 at 40.1grains as a starting load and 60.5 grains as a max load. Hodgdon recommends 56.0grains start charge and 62.0 Compressed max My Speer manual lists the same powder starting load at 55.0grains with a max of 59.0 compressed as a max load. Hodgdon Reloading Calculator also lists IMR4350 at 54grains start and 58.0max charge compressed. the same calculator also lists H4895 with a charge of 46.0 Grains and a max charge of 51.0grains max. My question is asking for an informed recommendation which of the 3 powders would you recommend or is there another powder that might be better? I will be shooting target out to max of 200 yards at first with a future hunting trip a strong possibility for Whitetail and possibly Coyote

For an '06 bolt gun, IMR4350 is usually hard to beat. Others out there could work equally as well also, RX19, RX22, H414/WW760 (same powder), VV150/550, VV160/560. For 150 gr bullets something a bit faster like IMR4895 might be what shines in your gun. For bullets in the lighter end of the weight ranges medium burn rate powders seem to give better accuracy. For heavier bullets, the slower burning powder seen to work better there. But there are few carved in stone rules here, it's something you'll have to play with to find what works best in your rifle,

h4350 safari outdoor

I'm using W760 and a 175 match grain bullet. Sure is accurate albeit the 175 isn't a hunting round for my Ought-six.

h4350 safari outdoor

For a bolt action rifle, and with hunting loads of the 180 class, you can't beat IMR-4350. I've found that IMR-4895 works better with the 150 to 165 grain bullets in the same rifles. I've done a lot (!!!) of shooting with .30-06 hunting rifles, and have found them to be outstanding performers both on the range and for hunting big game (mule deer and elk). If I only had one 'all around' bullet to use for either large deer or elk - I'd go with the 165 grain soft point boat tail. These are very accurate (with IMR-4895) and are deadly on both animals.

h4350 safari outdoor

I use Varget so I can't help you decide which is better.

h4350 safari outdoor

for 30-06 boltguns, my favorite is IMR4064, followed very, very closely by varget. Both are great powders.

I plan on putting 100-200 rounds of Factory Ammo through the gun before I start shooting reloads, I already have 2 boxes of Hornady American Whitetail in 150 Grain BTSP. I also have 2 unopened boxes of 100 Hornady 150gr Interlock BTSP, and more Once fired cases already cleaned sized trimmed than I can shake a stick at. So when it comes to working up a load all I need is the powder. The reason I would lean toward the IMR 4350 is it is a short cut xtruded powder, I like the way spherical powders meter through my RCBS Powder Measure so this seems hat it would Measure in a similar way. Looking at my Speer manual H4895yields lower velocity rounds than the IMR4350 and H4350. none of my manuals list IMR 4895 though. Is it an extruded powder or Spherical or somewhere in between (like a Short Cut Extruded)?

My Speer Manual does list a load for Varget.

4895 doesn't meter very well. Perhaps it's my Hornady LNL case-activated powder drop but it feels like gravel and I get too much variance with 4895.

I think all the IMR powders meter out with some difficulty. I was playing with some IMR4831 for my Swede, and this stuff was an absolute bear.

h4350 safari outdoor

Both of my 06's love 57 grains of IMR 4350 with 165 grain Nosler BTBT.

I am going to get the Kindle version of the Hornady X edition later today so I have another manual to use. Have wait for the wife to say yep as it will be on her card. but $13 VS $43 plus tax is a great price.

I have the Hornady #9 on both my iPad and iPhone "ebooks" app. It does make it mighty handy. It is nice to be able to see what powder works for what bullet, no matter where you might be.

if you can print from it, even better. print out pages as you use / need them, then just get a hole punch and a 3 ring binder

Whenever I shot 150 to 165 grain bullets out of my 03 Springfield I used IMR 4064. For 180s I used IMR 4350. The Springfield was my uncles rifle, he gave it to me when he gave up hunting in 1970, he passed in 1997. Whatever you choose have a great time.

I have one of the old Kindle Keyboard eReaders. I also have the Kindl App on my (as I call it) Ballistics Computer in my reloading room. I also have the Alliant Powder update for 2016 on that computer. I make prints of the Load data I use from that and put them in my load binder.

If I can get my wife motivated to go see our uncle, I am going to bring back an '03 Springfield (not an03 A3)Many years ago he Bought 4 of them through a Deal from the NRA at the time they cost him $10 each. He also picked up a Garand (in 30-06) and an M1 Carbine (another gun he told me I was going to inherit some day). So reloading 30-06 is going to be needed even more. So I am going to have to work up rounds for 2 different 30-06 rifles.

2A-Jay said: He also picked up a Garand (in 30-06) and an M1 Carbine (another gun he told me I was going to inherit some day). So reloading 30-06 is going to be needed even more. So I am going to have to work up rounds for 2 different 30-06 rifles. Click to expand...

h4350 safari outdoor

I can't help you with your powders, but my .30-06 BAR Safari seems to like Power Pro 4000MR rather well, for both 150 and 180 gr bullets. It works better with the heavier ones, though.

Mind if I ask you 4895 users what you're using to meter your powder with? I'll assume you're using a single stage. What powder measure cuts 4895 cleanly? Or are you scooping it and using a funnel.

h4350 safari outdoor

The Lyman 55 powder measure is hard to beat. I've never had any issues with 4895 metering consistently through a Lee perfect, pacific deluxe or the Lyman 55 measures. I've found 4064 to be one of the worst metering extruded powders but, the Lyman 55 handles it with ease as long as I'm consistent in my throws.

I used an RCBS Uniflow measurer and 10-10 scale for many years. The scale gave up the ghost - and I bought a Lyman DPS. I never have had any problems metering or measuring IMR-4895 with either one. JFIW - about half of my loads in 7.62 NATO and .30-06 are Match ammo, so my powder charge accuracy is critical. IMR-4895 isn't as coarse as IMR-4350 and measures more easily.

One of my 03A3 sporters likes 150 gn Hornady Interlocks over Hodgdon Superformance. Others H414 and same bullet. IMR 4064 and IMR 3031 have worked well too.

I always liked IMR 4350.

It is a stick type powder, so it is just as bad as the others you mentioned. I am usually only loading a few 30.06 at a time so I weigh every charge, anyway.

Slayer, I agree, imr 4064 is about the hardest to measure stick I've used. But I still love it.

So do I. It produces some pretty accurate ammo in the cartridges I use it in.

h4350 safari outdoor

I have been loading for a friend of mine his Remington 700 in 30-06 with IMR 4350 but recently picked up a pound of IMR 4451 for him and it meters very well compared to 4350. With 4350 I always throw a lower charge then trickle the rest.

h4350 safari outdoor

I load 4350, 4064 and 4895 all three for my '06s. With the stick powders I used to set my RCBS powder measure a bit light, dump the powder into the pan for my scale, then trickled the last few grains by hand until the scale balanced. Now I use my RCBS Chargemaster which essentially does the same thing automatically. Slow but precise. I do load these on my Rock Chucker single stage, not on the Dillon.

I have been doing more research using my friend the computer, I just got done looking at the Western Powder Load data sheet. It lists 5 Spherical Powders, AA2520, AA2700, Ramshot Tac, Ramshot Big Game, Ramshot Hunter for 150grain BTFMJ bullets for the 30-06. Any Experience with these powders Good or Bad. I know both of my powder measures meter Spherical Powders Very accurately.
